CLEANER FISH HIDES CLEANER FISH HIDES
OK Marine has extensive experience in use of hides for cleaner fish and is constantly working together with salmon farmers to develop new and more efficient artificial biotopes to ensure optimum conditions for the cleaner fish. We manufacture and supply several types of hides for cleaner fish. We stock many different varieties, but will also customise / tailor hides to your needs with short delivery times. Our hides are known for their high quality and long lifetime. The hides are made of solid materials and folded thrice in order to create many good spots for cleaner fish to hide in. See some of our «Standard Hides» here. These hides will fit most cages and locations, but we will also custom-make hides according to your needs.
TWO-PART CURTAIN HIDE One of our most popular models. These are normally installed in «corridors» to provide the salmon with a natural location to swim through in order to be deloused by cleaner fish. The hides are divided in the middle to allow one part of the hide to be pulled aside for drying. Thus, the other part of the corridor will remain submerged in the sea. The hides may be handled without the use of a crane boat, and are suitable for both wrasse and lumpfish. Technical data: • 12 rows with a length of 10 m each • 1.25 m between each string • Delivered with sinking balls/lead lines The hides are available in both thick and normal plastic. The hides may be supplied as pure kelp hides or as combi hides. (On the combi hides, every other row is made of double-folded thick plastic intended to function as a suction surface for the lumpfish.)

CURTAIN/RETRACTABLE HIDES
Same principle as the two-part curtain hides, but in this case the entire curtain is pulled aside. Suitable for both lumpfish and wrasse. Technical data: • 8 rows with a length of 10 m each • 1.25 m between each string • Delivered with sinking balls/lead lines The hides are available in both thick and normal plastic. The hides may be supplied as pure kelp hides or as combi hides. (On the combi hides, every other row is made of double-folded thick plastic intended to function as a suction surface for the lumpfish.)

KELP PANELS
Kelp strips fastened with a top line and lead line/ lead sinkers at the bottom. The hides have no curtain function and a crane boat is therefore recommended when drying/washing the hides. Support rings are fitted on the top line for fastening floats. Technical data: • 13 rows with a length of 10 m each • 0.5 m between each string • Delivered with sinking balls/lead lines The hides are available in both thick and normal plastic. The hides may be supplied as pure kelp hides or as combi hides. (On the combi hides, every other row is made of double-folded thick plastic intended to function as a suction surface for the lumpfish.)

FRAME HIDES
10 kelp strings with a length of 10 m each fitted to a floating frame. Five kelp strings are mounted on each of the long sides of the floating frame, creating a corridor that the salmon will use to get deloused by the cleaner fish. A crane boat is recommended for drying and washing these hides. Technical data: • 2x4 m rectangular frame (perimeter 12 m) • 10 rows with a length of 10 m each • 1 m between the strings • Delivered with sinking balls/lead lines The hides are available in both thick and normal plastic.

GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONS REGARDING USE OF CLEANER FISH HIDES
QUANTITY
Based on experience, the ratio of cleaner fish to salmon ranges from 5 to 20% in the cages, depending on the lice load. OUR RECOMMENDATION: About 10-30 cleaner fish should be used per metre of hide, depending on the type and size.
PLACEMENT IN THE CAGES
In order for the cleaner fish to function efficiently, it is important to establish locations where the salmon and the cleaner fish may interact. If the hides are arranged in corridors, the salmon will swim into the corridors to get rid of the lice. The upper illustration shows hides arranged in a V-shaped corridor. This configuration is intended to facilitate the salmon stopping up to be deloused. Our experience/feedback from our customers shows that the salmon will stop in the corridors regardless of whether they are arranged in a V-shape or a straight line. Keep a distance of min. 2 metres between the kelp walls. OUR RECOMMENDATION: Arrange the hides in corridors, either in a straight line or in a V-shape. Position the corridors along the current. Locate the hides outside the zone covered by the feed spreader for the salmon (the feed for the cleaner fish must be placed in the hides). If the hides are to be cleaned by drying on the edge of the cages, place three hides next to each other to ensure a corridor will be available for the salmon at all times.

CLEANING
It is very important to keep the hides clean to ensure the cleaner fish functions as intended. Clean hides will prevent cleaner fish from eating marine growth and crustaceans that will appear in the hides. OUR RECOMMENDATION: Dry the hides along the edge of the cages as shown in the illustration at the bottom. Another alternative is to use a washing machine for cleaning of hides. It is important to ensure there are corridors available in the sea at all times.
Drying on the edge of the cage
This can be achieved by using double corridors. This will allow drying of one row of hides at the same time as one corridor remains in the sea. These are general recommendations regarding use of cleaner fish hides. Minor adjustments and adaptations will normally be required at each individual site. We will be happy to answer any questions you may have or provide additional advice. The recommendations are based on collaboration with and experience from the best salmon farmers in the industry. OK Marine has extensive experience with cleaner fish and hides. We supply hides to most salmon farmers in Norway and Northern Europe.

ACCLIMATISATION STATION/HOLDING CAGE FOR CLEANER FISH
ACCLIMATISATION STATION/HOLDING CAGE FOR CLEANER FISH
OK Marine, together with some of Norway's leading users of cleaner fish, has developed an acclimatisation station/holding cage. Such acclimatisation stations are important to prevent the cleaner fish from swimming to the bottom of the cage and to facilitate faster adaptation to a salmon lice diet for the cleaner fish. The cage is easy to use with several ingenuous solutions. In addition to acclimatisation of the cleaner fish, the station will also help salmon farmers reduce the mortality during the initial period after they have been delivered. The cage may also be used as a stocking cage if required. Contact us and we will be happy to answer any further questions or provide additional advice. Technical data: • 190 x 300 cm. Approx. 8.5 m3 • The pens are supplied with a floating frame, roof hoops, a roof net and plastic kelp.
All orders are inspected and quality controlled prior to shipment from OK Marine. Upon delivery, double check the order and make sure the goods have not been damaged during transport. Place the acclimatisation station on a flat surface. Position the floating frame on top of the cage. Place each corner loop over the poles in the corners, and then fasten two ties on each of the long sides.
Close the mule opening using "finger crocheting". This will allow opening of the cage from the top when it is to be emptied.
Make sure the escape openings are closed, and that the lines for opening them have not been caught behind the covers. (If the cage is to be used as a holding cage, fasten the cover with ties.) Position the kelp hide diagonally across the cage by hanging the loops over the corner posts (see upper image on this page).
