9 REFLECTION OF LIFE TELMEN GEREL DZJIND TU DELFT | NETHERLANDS

TELMEN GEREL DZJIND Telmen Gerel Dzjind, I live in Delft. | I love home cooked food. Master student | Design for Interaction | Industrial Design Engineering Technical University of Delft, The Netherlands

I was born in a communistic Mongolia in 1988. My parents were art - students at the time, though the field of art as it was defined in Mongolia would rather be considered craftsmanship in Western society. The country was very conservative in terms of expression of art, music or anything creative. Besides Mother Russia, its borders were on somewhat of a lockdown which made everything outside of the country a scarcity. This applied for music as well. These dire circumstances cultivated a whole generation of young people that were extremely curious towards the outside world. As is significant with any generation, there is a certain kind of music that embodies the thoughts of the young people. These voices were often imported by Mongolian students studying abroad in Russia. Every year they would bring along cassette tapes and vinyls, to be bootlegged and spread around Mongolia. This way, even if it was months later, popular artists like David Bowie, Boney M, Queen and Michael Jackson found their way into the life of Mongolian youngsters. By the time I was 4 years old, the USSR finally fell and Mongolia was free again. Curious as they were, my parents immediately left Mongolia to explore what was then a completely new wild world. This exploration resulted in a vast trip for the three of us. Unpredictable and exciting for two young students and a child, me.

Seeking inspiration, we travelled through a number of countries to eventually reach the Netherlands. The land of Van Gogh, Rembrandt, Vermeer and many other great artists. During the course of the long trip that brought us there, we would often reside in one room apartments, or at times even a single tent. Living in such close proximity, I truly had the chance to experience their discoveries in culture, people and music. Looking back, music was a vital component for this time in my life, like with any road trip. I remember many moments and experiences of being with my parents. From MTV (back when they actually played music) to all the tapes my parents would buy and listen to, the music helps connect the memories of that exploration for me. I have the strongest memories and flashbacks when I listen to certain songs and bands. When relating to this project, music has countless different meanings to me. But looking back at the experiences that have shaped my life and what helps me recall them, I am completely fascinated by the ability to reflect memories out of music. I find the ability to re-live your life by just listening to music beautiful and captivating. It is completely different compared to looking at old photos or a diary, yet it is at least equally powerful.

MY INTERPERTATION OF THE BEOPLAY A9 I really love the design of the A9. I did not want to damage the vision of the product, but extend it. Values I want to preserve; it transcends ‘electronic’ devices, it more of a beautiful furniture piece. Like a grand piano, it also transcends being just a music instrument. The shape and volume porportions remind me of an old grammaphone and Pastoe furniture due to the contrast in volume (big vs. fragile).

Interpertation of the A9: Some examples of the volume contrast I find in other products.

I like to extend my thoughts an spread out my impulses. By fully spreading out everything I can get a better view on my thoughts, see connections and structure a chaotic mind.

Limited edition products I find very interesting.

Music can give me nostalgia, recollect deep memories and experiences. Just as the A9 gives me the experience of a grammaphone player the design has a touch of nostalgia. The darker wood contrasting with polished aluminium. The polished aluminium serves as an abstract interpertation for ‘reflecting life experiences’.

Aluminium and wood still keep the A9 authentic in material and design. The Print has a very subtle gradient, just to give the design more depth.
