With summer over, fall in full swing and winter around the corner, it’s surprising just how quickly the year has passed. The end of 2013 is nearing and hopefully you’ve accomplished a majority of the resolutions and goals you set for yourself at the beginning of the year. If you haven’t, you still have a few months to go before throwing in the towel and re-setting goals for 2014. Global issues that were at a forefront earlier this year seem like a distant memory but yet, themes of core issues seem to resurface. Nearly one year has passed since the brutal rape and death of a young student in New Delhi, and on a near daily basis, more cases of sexual violence against women in India are brought to the attention of an international audience. This issue we shed light on violence against women in India, human trafficking statistics, and the involvement of local girls in gangs. It is disturbing, but not surprising, to see an issue that has taken the lives of too many South Asian men now affect girls and women. But not all is doom and gloom. We’re happy to bring you some great beauty and fashion tips, advice for budding entrepreneurs, and sizzling hot reads to keep you warm this winter. In September I had the opportunity to catch up with model, actress and philanthropist Mannu Sandhu who tells us about the exciting new projects she’s working on, how she handles criticism, and where she sees herself in the future. Our inbox is always open to your feedback and suggestions. If you have any comments, suggestions or just want to chat, send us an email at editor@desitoday.ca.

From pageants to

Mannu Sandhu has come a long way
Quick Bio
Photography by Farah Hasan
Mannu Sandhu was raised in Surrey, BC. To her family, the small town of Surrey must have felt millions of miles away from their native India, where Mannu was raised in Palampur. Chasing the Canadian dream of opportunity, Mannu’s family left India when she was 14 years old. Mannu grew up speaking both Punjabi and English, celebrating her culture at home, while happily integrating into Canadian society. Mannu grew quickly into her beauty and, at her mother’s encouragement, began modelling at the age of 16 but took a break to explore her career opportunities. It wasn’t until 2007 while employed full-time as a Correctional Officer with the Province of BC, that Mannu started to model again. Success naturally followed, and in 2009 Mannu was a finalist in the Miss B.C. pageant and placed 1st Runner Up in the Miss Moella Canada Beauty Pageant in 2010. Although her travel and exposure has increased, Mannu has 10

What are you working on right now? I’m working on a film in LA, set to be released on Valentine’s Day, called Tera Mera Pyaar. I’ve been busy with this project but am speaking to producers in LA, trying to get started on another project but for now it’s this film and my career as a correctional officer that is keeping me busy.
Can you tell us about Tera Mera Pyaar? As the name implies, it’s a love story. The male lead is a well-known theatre actor from the United States, and Dhamendra Deol is also in the film. The film focuses on California, and how it is regarded as the “Punjab” of the US. There are smaller themes throughout the film focusing on hate crimes against Sikhs and trafficking between the Mexico and US border. The story line is a cool concept and the film is action based.
How was meeting Dhamendra Deol?
stayed committed to her career and community. She has devoted her time to charities and non-profit organizations like BC Children’s Hospital, Sikh Blood Donation, Pakistan Flood Relief, Salvation Army, Operation Canada and Mannkind Charitable Society, where she and others travel to Baru Sahib in Himachal Pardes annually to help children born with facial deformities. Things really began moving for Mannu Sandhu in 2011 when she competed in Miss Universe Canada placing in the top 16 and won a humanitarian award for raising the most funds for SOS Children’s Village to build three computer centers in Nicaragua. The Indian beauty then went on to a role in her first Canadian feature film “Footsteps into Gangland,” and has since acted in a feature film in India called “Saadi Wakhri Hai Shaan”. Mannu is one of those women you can’t forget. With the delicate doe-eyed beauty of Priyanka Chopra but the stature and compassion of Angelina Jolie – Mannu Sandhu has officially arrived.

I was nervous. I took my mom with me to set, and we were asked to wait in a sitting room in the house we’re filming in, while Dhamendra came down this long hallway to meet us. The anticipation was building up and I got more and more nervous as I could see him walking down the hallway, surrounded by people. He was so down to earth and nice, and all the nervousness I felt dissipated when we had a chance to speak. Working with him has been a great experience.
You just finished filming your third film, Maple Heart, what is that about? Maple Heart is produced by KR Hollywood Productions and is primarily shot in the Vancouver area. I play the role of a woman who comes from a broken home, with a father who is an alcoholic that denies his addiction. The entire film touches on difficult issues for families like sexual and mental abuse, mental illness, and the stories intersect. It should be released early 2014. Kavi Raz is such a great person to work with, and has such a unique vision for this film. He handpicked his leads and had a unique vision on how we wanted each character portrayed.
How did your first Punjabi film, Saadi Wakhri Hai Shaan, do? It was a world-wide release, and not the traditional Punjabi film starring a singer or having a comedy base. I think all of the producers based the film on their own stories and experiences. It was my first
film, and I got to work with Gurbir Grewal and Nadeem Khan. The film did well and opened a lot of doors for me.
You played a controversial role in Mani Amar’s film ‘Footsteps into Gangland’, how was that experience? The experience was great. I played Mya, a young woman in the foster care system that is abused by her foster father. Working on this film really pushed my boundaries, and allowed me to explore who I am as an actor. There’s a scene showing nudity, but the nudity wasn’t sexual, it was me portraying a dead girl in a bathtub with blood everywhere. There was a three second pan shot of me laying in a bath tub, naked and dead, with blood everywhere. Of course I was conflicted about appearing nude so I spoke to my mom about it, and she told me it was up to me. It was a tough decision and I don’t regret it. A lot of people criticize me for the scene, but people that know me know that it was part of the film and a part that I played. I feel like playing that role has allowed me to get over any fears that I have. There is a perception that nudity in Indian cinema is sexual, even if there is no sexual association. A nude Indian male or female, in a film, is unfortunately associated with sex and pornography. There’s a clip from the film on YouTube where a turbaned man is forcing himself on me, and I get criticized for that. There’s a perception that men with turbans shouldn’t be portrayed in a negative light, but I think it’s important to remember that people with turbans aren’t exempt from criminal activity – it’s not realistic to think that they don’t commit crimes at all, nor that all of them do commit crimes.
Do you think Mani Amar gets criticized for the film? He gets criticized for a lot of his work, especially scenes where he shows cocaine usage around a gurdwara, or a turbaned man raping a girl. But the reality is sadly OCT / NOV 2013

COVER that things like this do happen, and he is showing something that is real. Look at what is going on in India, rapes are reported daily, and there are so many others that don’t get reported. Child molestation is something that affects the South Asian community, but it is ignored and brushed under the carpet. When we shut our eyes to issues like that, we are not facing the issue head on. The reality is that some parents do that to their own children, or someone else’s children, and talking about issues are going to shed light, create a discussion and allow for a possible solution. What people often forget is that Footsteps into Gangland was not a commercial film, it’s a documentary. It’s going to be real and people need to understand that. Mani wanted to show something real and it was hard for the actors involved too, because it is so real. He did an excellent job and accomplished what he set forth to do.
Would you appear nude in an Indian film? I wouldn’t appear nude for an Indian film, it wouldn’t be tasteful or right for an Indian audience. If you look at Canadian or Hollywood films, it’s more accepted. I pushed my boundaries at a young age and feel like if I wanted to say no to nudity now, I’m in a place where I can easily say no.
Is it challenging to find appropriate roles while being mindful of your Indian roots? A potential role needs to be strong. I’m looking for daring roles, but of course I don’t want to pursue anything that is insulting to anyone. I think there are certain topics that although they may seem taboo, need to be covered. It’s a case by case scenario, something that I need to think about when I get approached at the time of the project.
As a local celebrity, how do you deal with negativity or feedback? I work very hard, but I’m pragmatic and know there will always be hecklers and critics. People believe what they hear, and often don’t based assumptions on their own experiences. I put my heart and soul into the work I do and when people meet me and see the authenticity of what I do, they’re humbled by it. You can’t fight with people, you let them be and hope they figure it out, eventually. I’m the first girl in my family to branch into acting or modeling. No one has thought about entering the entertainment industry, and I’m pursuing it on a larger scale. My dad was involved with bhangra and dancing, but I’m really exploring unchartered territory for my family. When I 12

experience negativity I remember that I’m creating a legacy and maybe I’m opening a door for future generations in my family. I’ve mentally prepared myself to look a certain way and have a certain body type. Once you’re in the industry you need to maintain yourself, and you’re competing against the best. It’s a personal decision for me, I want to be healthy and fit, and I take it upon myself to watch what I eat, if I indulge too much I’ll make up for it the next day. I’ve been the same shape since high school.
You’re always at major events, either attending or participating. You’re synonymous with Indian style. Where do you get your acting and fashion inspiration from? I love Angelina Jolie and am constantly thinking about what she would do, how she dresses, her styling, etc. I see myself striving to be like her, I could never be at the same level she is at, but I am inspired by her. She’s humble and involved on an international level. I aspire to follow in her philanthropic footsteps. She’s also an amazing actor and has such versatility in her roles. She’s not afraid to be the “ugly girl” and doesn’t only go after parts where she gets to be beautiful on screen.
Do you hope to break into mainstream entertainment? There’s always a desire to make it mainstream and I think it’s slowly changing where mainstream films and sitcoms feature more Indian actors. If the opportunity presents itself, I would love to pursue mainstream productions. I find myself drawn to roles where I get to be beautiful and feminine, but I do want to experience the flip side where I can push myself out of my comfort level.
If you could write yourself into any TV show, which one would it be? I love Lost. I’d write myself into that show... or Gossip Girl. I don’t really watch a lot of www.desitoday.ca

TV. I’m behind the times with most television series, but maybe even a show about jail like Prison Break or Breaking Bad.
You’ve participated in a lot of pageants. How have you benefited from this experience? The preparation for a pageant is intense, from presentation, etiquette, public speaking, etc. You’re trained to carry yourself conservatively, shape your body and prepare yourself mentally. Pageants mould you and prepare you for bigger roles, and are great for women not only hoping to break into the entertainment industry, but for any woman wanting to take herself to the next level.
There was a lot of buzz surrounding the crowning of Nina Davuluri as Miss America. What are your thoughts on a woman of Indian heritage being crowned as Miss America, and the reaction that she faced over social media? I think it’s great that Nina Davuluri won Miss America. She’s really risen above the negative comments, and has been so graceful. She has received support from all over the world, and from within the US. It’s important to remember that there is such a small margin of individuals that reacted negatively. I don’t think that the naysayers are narrow-minded, they’re ignorant. The critics don’t understand geography and are ignorant on where India is. Some people don’t want to challenge their perceptions or stereotypes, but this changes and evolves constantly.
Where do you see yourself in the future? Professionally, I want to continue working as hard as I am now, and further myself. I’m really at the peak of my career right now and want to see how far I can take my acting career. Of course I want to eventually settle down and start a family, but that’s not something I’m focusing on right now. I’d also like to continue working on philanthropic efforts, with a focus on women’s issues both locally and internationally. www.desitoday.ca

He confiscated Janet’s passport and forced her to have sex with at least 35 men each day with only 5 hours of sleep. When she tried to refuse, the brothel owner would beat her with an iron pole until she gave in. US State Department have methods and tactics to condition and exploit women and girls. Their methods include starvation, confinement, physical abuse, rape, gang rape, threats of violence to the victims and the victims’ families, forced drug addiction and the threat of shaming victims and their families. According to the Servants Anonymous Society, in British Columbia, human trafficking is recognized as a problem that cannot be ignored. Reports claim that Vancouver has about 500 street prostitutes under the age of 17, although it victimizes individuals of all ages. Some reports claim that many more children may be involved in indoor prostitution. Only 20% to 50% of the sex-trade is visible above ground with children being openly solicited on the streets, with 70% to 80% occurring in massage parlors, karaoke bars and “trick pads” known only to buyers. In smaller BC communities, the sexual exploitation of children is even less visible. It occurs in private homes, back alleys and parks, at public docks and truck stops, and on fishing boats. It has been claimed that there are about 10,000 child prostitutes across Canada. Most people think of human trafficking as an international problem, and the ‘typical’ victims of human trafficking conjure up thoughts of poverty-stricken Europeans girls who are sold on the streets of Vancouver. As difficult as it may be to believe, many victims of human trafficking are from local middle-class families who are lured and groomed into the sex trade, and eventually treated like slaves. Slavery and trafficking today functions for the same reasons it has historically: to maximize profits by minimizing or eliminating cost. There are key differences in modern day slavery that make it more expansive than ever before. Trafficked humans can be exploited in different industries that are intrinsically woven into the global economy. Whereas the average slave two centuries ago could generate a 15%-20% return on investment, today is several hundred per cent per year, and over 900% per year for sex trafficking. According to Karen Bravo, author of Exploring the analogy between modern trafficking in humans and the Trans-Atlantic slave trade, the trade in humans is a $5 to $7-billion per year industry, slightly less profitable than only the traffic in illegal drugs and arms. A human trafficker can earn up to $250,000 per year when he purchases a girl. A trafficker can sell her body up to 30 times per day for ten years or more, depending on the age she is at the time of purchase and her health (many develop addictions and contract sexual diseases). The average cost of a sex-slave in 2012 was a few hundred dollars. This is perhaps the primary reason why there is such a demand among exploiters to acquire more slaves through human trafficking. Human trafficking can end when legal, political and social conditions are inhospitable to human trafficking, women and children are given real economic alternatives and when true equality for women is a political priority. To see an end to women’s exploitation,

“I walk around and carry the physical scars of the torture you put me through. The cigarette burns, the knife carvings, the piercings…how a human being can see humor in the torture, manipulations, and brainwashing of another human being is beyond comprehension. You have given me a life sentence.” Victim of sex trafficking in the United States, to her trafficker at his sentencing - US State Department the cultural acceptance and normalizing of commercial sexual exploitation that fuels a cycle of violence against women needs to end. The policies and practices that channel women into conditions of exploitation need to be opposed. Sex trafficking does not exist because its victims are vulnerable. It exists because there is a demand for commercial sex that traffickers can exploit and profit from. In 1999, with the approval of over 70% of its surveyed population, Sweden passed groundbreaking legislation that criminalized the buyer of sexual services. The legislation was based on the foundation that the system of prostitution is a violation of gender equality, and officially recognized that it is unacceptable for men to purchase women for sexual exploitation, whether marked as sexual pleasure or ‘sex work.’ Equally important, Sweden recognized that human trafficking would not be solved without addressing the demand for prostitution. The law does not target the persons in prostitution. The Nordic model was adopted in Sweden, and has since been followed in Norway and Iceland. Three of the top four countries with the highest level of gender equality have adopted the Nordic model as a way to fight sex trafficking and sexual exploitation. Alongside this law, the Swedish government made a significant investment in exit programs for those who wish to leave prostitution to provide comprehensive social services for victims of exploitation, which is essential for a victim-centered, human rights-based approach to combating trafficking. Since the introduction of the law, street prostitution has halved (while increasing dramatically in Sweden’s neighbors) and Sweden has become an undesirable destination for sex traffickers. In addition, the new law has influenced attitudes regarding the purchase of sex: from 1996 (before the law) until 2008, the number of male sex buyers decreased from 13.6% to 7.9%. There are many things that can be done on an individual level to stop human trafficking. In addition to creating a cultural, political and legal condition where human trafficking is not tolerated, there needs to be an individual challenge of the acceptance of the sex industry and normalization of prostitution as work. This includes challenging the glamorization of pimps in culture, confronting the belief that prostitution is a victimless crime, supporting anti-human trafficking policies, and ending sex tourism practices. Human trafficking is illegal, a human rights violation and an extreme form of violence against women. Victims of human trafficking don’t often fit typical stereotypes. They could be from your neighbourhood or your community. They could be your daughter.

So begins the UN Charter, the foundational treaty of international law, which unequivocally prohibits the threat or use of force by one state against another. The Charter also carves out only two limited exceptions to this prohibition: (a) self defence against an armed attack from another state, or (b) with the express approval of the United Nations Security Council. As a result, the Canadian Government© s recent announcement of its moral support for a US attack on Syria is contrary to international law. It was the use of force in such circumstances that was deemed at the Nuremberg trials to be the "supreme international crime". That a Nobel laureate would endeavour to commit the "crime of all crimes" as the Nurem20

berg trials put it, speaks volumes. That our Government, purportedly acting on our behalf, would support such an attack (or threat of attack) is also grievous. The Obama administration is looking to condemn the "use" not the "possession" of chemical weapons in the Middle East, but crucially, because condemnation of possession would raise the question of why Israel is permitted to keep such, and even more deadly and indiscriminate nuclear, weapons in its arsenal. An outright ban on the possession of chemical and nuclear weapons in the region and in the World is not only advisable but is foreseen by the, amongst other things, Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, which expects nuclear-weapons states to reduce their arsenals systematically until they are eliminated; an obligation routinely ignored by nuclear-weapons states and the mainstream media. To support an attack on Syria, Obama recently announced that for seven decades the US has been the anchor of global security. It’s a pronouncement that can be taken seriously only if we ignore (with tremendous effort) the US overthrow of parliamentary democracies and www.desitoday.ca

the installation of brutal dictatorships in, amongst other states, Iran, Guatemala, and Chile. In fact forty years ago on September 11th, in what Latin Americans refer to as "The First September 11th", the US supported the brutal and vicious dictator Augusto Pinochet in his military overthrow and annihilation of Chile© s parliamentary democracy which led to death and devastation incomparably greater than what occurred on September 11, 2001. A decade earlier, President Kennedy began acts of aggression in South-East Asia in violation of the UN Charter that led to the deaths of literally millions of people and deformed babies continue to be born to this day as a result of the overwhelming and indiscriminate use of chemical weapons by the US, contrary to both the UN Charter and the Geneva Conventions. The list only grows much longer as we move through the later part of the 20th century and end most recently with Iraq in 2002. Harvard law professor and Nobel laureate Obama, together with the millions of victims scattered throughout the World, is certainly aware of this history. Returning to Canada and our Government© s professed support for the threat of the use of force against Syria, our history is not as pacific as many Canadians would like to think. Our recent use of force in both Afghanistan and the former Yugoslavia did not fall under either of the exceptions referenced above under the UN Charter. As a result, our use of force in both cases was unequivocally unlawful. An exploration of the facts in both cases further reveals that our use of force was also illegitimate. A conclusion that can be reached then from recent events with respect to Syria is that in the face of the abhorrently criminal activities of (allegedly) another state, we ought not support or undertake the use of force, which remains the "supreme international crime" and which we and our most important ally have undertaken repeatedly and persistently in the decades since we resolved to "save succeeding generations from the scourge of war". If we really are committed to global justice and human rights, the first place we should demonstrate our resolve is in our own backyard where the effects of the systematic genocide and ethnic cleansing of First Peoples continues to this day.

It was the dawn of 1971. My wife and I were going home from Vatranasi to Haridwar. When the train stopped at the Lucknow railway station, I got off the train for tea to wet our beaks. An ex-professor of mine, who was also on board the same train, spotted me and called and asked, “When did you arrive? How long are you going to be in India?” He knew that I had been living abroad for a few years. Once I answered his questions, he invited me to join him on a teaching assignment, sponsored by the National Council of Educational Research and Training in Delhi. With a slight hesitation, as our plan in India was to spend time with our parents not teach, I accepted his invitation. After I delivered my first lecture on, “Teaching Hindi as a foreign language?” a student, who was a lecturer at a Post Graduate College, came to me and said, “Sir, your Hindi is excellent, but your last name, ‘Kurl’ suggests that you are not an Indian.” Before I could respond to his comment, a couple of professors, who were standing close to me, blurted out, “You are almost right. Dr. Kurl is only half Indian. His mother is India, but his father is German. The student, left gloating over his astute observation about my mixed-up bloodlines, not knowing that he had been sold a bag of lies. Now back to mother languages; on November 17, 1999, the United Nations proclaimed February 21 as the International Mother Language Day to promote awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism. This proclamation, as I see it, has three parts: the contribution of mother languages to the cognitive and emotional development of children, the importance of linguistic and cultural diversity and the need for multilingualism in the modern world. Everyone knows the first language children are exposed to by their primary care givers, including family servants, becomes their primary vehicle of communication between them and their family…and later, between them and their entire monolingual community. It becomes the medium of their abstract thinking, dreaming dreams and expressing their emotions. Through this medium, they learn to question, investigate and share their observations. Whether the language 22

is Benagali or Haida, Hindi or Hopi, Marathi, Panjabi, Tamil or Tlingit or Urdu, they form their identity and remains their medium of communication until they leaves their monolingual environment and enter a bilingual or multilingual society, like we did. Linguists and psychologists, based on the linguistic background of children, recommend that their primary education should start only in their mother language. Why? Because, that is the only linguistic exposure they have had since their birth. Because they are familiar with the grammar, vocabulary, intonation and stress patterns of their mother languages. If they had been raised in a class and gender sensitive society, they would know how to talk to their elders, women, their peers, their youngsters, even to their domestic and farm animals. They might be familiar with dozens of words for fish or snow, but might not know words for the latest scientific inventions. Concepts foreign to their primary linguistic exposure are dificult to internalise to
retain mentally. Foreign concepts often raise barriers in the path of intellectual and emotional comprehension. Why is that so? It is so, firstly, because mother languages function meaningfully only in monolingual societies. We cannot expect children, grown up in monolingual communities, to comprehend NASA operations through their mother language, unless their mother languages are fully evolved, unless their mother languages are in congruence with NASA operations, as English, French, German or Russian are. And secondly because a meaningful education of children takes place only when they are allowed to move from the known to the unknown. Only when their educational foundation is laid in their first language, they learn more through other languages spoken in their wider bilingual and multilingual setting. As Member of the National Parole Board, I was an avid advocate for developing Correctional Teaching Programs in prisoners’ mother languages. I used to notice that some of them had no clue what they were

being taught in the class. In today’s fast moving world, living multiculturally and working multilingually is a need we cannot leave unmet. Though we know the process of achieving multilingualism is complicated and demanding. We experience the old systems incapable of keeping up with new cultural and linguistic patters, which keeps us pushing and steering in unknown lanes. I say mother languages have no choice but to evolve. Nothing that is organic can remain the same for ever. People are organic. Cultures are organic. Languages are organic. They change. They evolve. Evolution is an enriching process. But let’s not mistake evolution with demolition. Evolution means assimilating, not getting assimilated. You know, we have assimilated thousands of Arabic, Persian, Turkish, English, French and Portugese words into Benagi, Hindi, Marathi and Panjabi, yet our grammar, intonation and stress patterns, generally known as, “accents” have remained the same. The proof is in our pronunciation of English words. We speak English with Bengali, Hindi, Punjabi accents. Don’t we? Whether we live in Bangladesh, India or Pakistan, our cultures expect us to remain proficient in our mother languages but life continues to demand us to gain proficiency at least in one foreign language. No South Asians living in Canada, no matter how many South Asian languages they speak, can rise in the Canadian Public Service, unless they are proficient in English and French as well. Some of us might call it, “legislated discrimination”. I call it, “senior public service tax”. Like it or not, you will have to pay it. Canada is the most liberal democracy in the world. People living in this country, at least the ones I know, have a genuine appreciation for its multicultural and multilingual policies. Multiculturalism and multilingualism enrich our lives. They contribute to our cultural competance. They contribute to our economic growth and enhance our quality of life. Multiculturalism and multilingualism are the basis of the United Nation’s International Mother Language policy, because they are in keeping with the spirit of the organization. THEREFORE, WE HAVE AN OBLIGATION TO KEEP THIS SPIRIT ALIVE THROUGH OUR CONTRIBUTION. LET’S GET ON WITH IT.

uring recent years, concern has grown and continues to increase about the prevalence of gang activity in Canada, however; the ways in which girls and young women are portrayed tends to be overlooked, simplified and distorted. Eventually, girls’ involvement in gangs may receive their share of attention but those girls are often only highlighted as violent,

out of control perpetrators or as vulnerable victims. In general, guns and gangs has been a sought-after topic in the past, yet there has been little or no talk on girl involvement in street-level gangs. A short time ago, I spoke to many parents with young daughters and asked if they ever worry about their girls becoming involved in a gang. The answer was always a confident and resonant, “No.” Unfortunately,
this response did not come as a surprise to me since it accurately parallels with commonly held social beliefs. Recent statistics show that the number of gangs overall is on the rise in Canada. An increase in gangs also suggested an increase in female involvement in gangs and their drug distribution networks. It may or may not come as a shock to many readers but during these changing times, some parts of Canada are now home to numerous girls-only gangs. This phenomenon of girls-only gangs are more common and dangerous in the American culture whereas Canada has been quite unaffected by the development of this gang category. Since culture is contagious, it won’t be difficult to predict the damaging effect that Canadian girls-only gangs can have here, in the near future. Whenever a gang member is shot on the street, the first automated thought that comes to mind is that of a male gang member who met his fate, however; that is not always the case. If we closely analyze some of the gangland murder stories from the recent past, there have been a number of homicides have been targeted by rival gang members simply due to their associations with opposing gangs. Below are a few of the stories that made headlines across Canada:

Teens can be elusive and difficult to read since many indiscretions tend to be attributed to typical teen angst and growing pains. July 28, 2010 – 22 year-old Mandie Astin Johnson was gunned down in a car in Abbotsford. Feb 2009 - 22 year-old female Briann Kinnear was shot to death in a black Dodge pickup in Coquitlam. According to the police release at the time, all of the signs indicated a targeted murder. Just five weeks prior to her killing, Brianna Helen Kinnear received an eight-month conditional sentence for three trafficking convictions in Port Coquitlam Provincial Court.

She died before the eyes of her young child who was still strapped in the child-safety seat. March 2009 -36 year-old Laura Lamoureux was found shot to death in a Langley home. Police identified her as a street-level drug dealer. Her death also had all the trademarks of a gangland murder. August 2009 - 23 year-old Jessica Illes was gunned down during a gangland hit in her Abbotsford basement suite. Illes was killed just days after the body of her boyfriend, Bobby DiGeorgio, was found in a burned-out car near the U.S. border. October 2008

“It is disturbing whenever we hear about another victim of gang crime,” says Sergeant Lindsey Houghton, spokesperson with the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit of British Columbia. “While most victims are men, we have seen a number of their girlfriends and wives caught in the crossfire of a gang war they have nothing to do with, but their association to these men put them at great risk with some of them losing their lives. Hanging out with gang members can get you killed and that includes women,” he says. These were few of the examples of young females dying due to some sort of gang involvement or merely their association to gangs. These murders raised the alarm that women are no longer “safe” from gang brutality. Times have changed and so have the rules of the game. In earlier days, the gangs carried an unwritten code that kept women out of bounds and somewhat sheltered. Also, women were often socialized in a way that rejected a violent lifestyle. These ideologies are continuously being challenged by the oncoming of these murders and many more. The previously listed murder cases quickly become precedents that are likely to foreshadow similar events in the future. In previous decades, there existed a code in the previous decades that protected women from violence - the notion that one was not to violently target a woman under any circumstances. It has become evident that the value of this code has been diminishing recently. It is not only due to the fact that women are becoming more vulnerable but rather, they are also taking certain risks by actively participating in the game of gangs and breaking the rules that apply. Any individual to step on enemy territory is subject to questioning, regardless of male or female. The consequences nowadays, are comparable. According to a report released by Statistics Canada, the number of Canadian males behind bars decreased by nine per cent between 2002 and 2007, while the number of women jumped by 11 per cent. Recent data suggests that female gang membership and women’s involvement in criminal activities are strikingly on the rise in Canada and beyond its borders. Girls are narrowing the gender gap in terms of drug use and abuse and they are also no longer just appendages to male gangs. As noted earlier, some are forming gangs of their own. Throughout the nation, females are approximately taking six percent of the positions in a gang. This ranges from a low of three per cent in Ontario to a high of 12 per cent in B.C., according to a study conducted by Canadian gang expert Michael Chettleburgh. Since the police traditionally under-arrest females, Chettleburgh thinks those figures are grossly understated; he believes the true number is closer to a third, adding that Canada recently welcomed its first allfemale gang. The Indian Posse Girls, supplementary to the Winnipeg-based Indian Posse gang, are thought to be the primary controllers of Ed-

monton’s sex trade. As women closely manage the sex trade field, they find it more effortless to recruit women into this workforce as well. Carrying illegal products and weapons are often more convenient to be passed on to female gang associates since they are less likely to be under the suspicion of the police. Whereas a group of males may be under close watch due to previous records and reports, females escape the attention. Social stereotypes tend to favour women in ways that leave men helpless. Women are able to use their bodies to an advantage and replace the need for men to hide things in their sleeves or pockets. A story that was widely covered by media across the country was that of the 20 year-old Jasmin Klair, a British Columbia resident who was arrested in the US for smuggling almost 24 pounds of cocaine. According to court documents, Jasmin alleged that she was persuaded by a 24 year-old male from British Columbia to smuggle cocaine into Canada. Jasmin Klair agreed to take part in the drug trafficking run for only $4000. Above is just one of many examples where females have been arrested with contraband – illegal transactions of goods. The part that becomes more shocking is the fact that these young girls agree to immense risk for minimum or no compensation. Money is also a factor that drives girls into criminal activity whereas some simply participate to perform favours to their drug-dealer boyfriends. In some cases, these drug-dealer boyfriends may offer to purchase name-brand items (bags, jewelry, clothing etc.) for their girlfriends and use this method to keep them engaged with performing risk-taking favours that mask their own actions. Criminal activities do not stop at drug trafficking only. During my service as a police officer, I have witnessed young girls getting involved in wide range of criminal activities. Electronic fraud is another way for gangs to earn large amounts of money. There are many loopholes found that allow gangsters to scam banks and department stores. One strategy is to use the women on their team to obtain jobs at the bank, insurance companies, mortgage brokers etc. It is evident that females are not given a sense of self-control and are used as objects as a means to an end. Research on female gangsters lacks public attention and significance, which could ultimately assist to enlighten common misunderstandings among the society. As mentioned above, females are often employed and objectified by male gangsters. This is a socially concerning fact that allows women to face sexual exploitation and other harmful assaults. Female gangsters rarely inch up the ladder to participate in the bigger scheme of things. Their roles may consist of escorts, prostitutes, drivers, and information gatherers that are kept beneath and simply used by other members to achieve their own goals. Some victims were the girlfriends and wives of gang members. Female gangsters are also able to gain im-

They are just a few of the young women who have been killed in recent years due to their involvement with gangsters or in gangs. FEATURES portance and status through dating notorious gangsters but it is crucial to note that they also put their lives at much more risk. It is through association that gang members feel power and it is no different between males or females. Women join gangs to be noticed, to feel important and to be a part of something significant. Desperation for the spotlight may have evolved from problems of abuse, poverty or neglect in their own households that leads to the need of finding an escape. An escape that often traps. Once again, not all females play substantial roles in gangs. A majority of the females are exploited sexually and act merely as entertainment for other gang members. These young victims do not approach the police or their parents for the fear of being exposed. Some constantly fear the wrath of the gang that they are part of and as a result, they continue to be exploited.
Reasons Girls join Gangs Even the ideal parents can sometimes fail to identify that their child is having a problem at school or home, or is headed down a dangerous path. Teens can be elusive and difficult to read since many indiscretions tend to be attributed to typical teen angst and growing pains. This section will help you to differentiate between growing pains and a serious problem, as well as assist you to know the signs of trouble before it is too late. Our aim is to provide you with the tools that you need to help keep our schools and community safe. Instead of living in constant fear and paranoia for your child’s safety at school, it is important to use these strategies and seek help to eliminate these issues altogether. Schools are meant for providing your children with a good education - which in turn will encourage them to be good citizens of the community - and that is what the focus should continue to be for all of us. Additionally, the topics covered in this section are geared to help you and your children identify another student or child that may be at risk of being a victim/instigator of school violence/ crime of any kind. Knowing the signs could mean life or death in some cases, so please take some time to read through the information here and develop a dialogue with your children regardless of whether there exists a concern. Awareness is key. Most girls join gangs for many of the same reasons young males do. Some of these reasons include: •
Peer pressure
•
Money
•
Narcotics
•
Family structure
•
Sexual, verbal, or physical abuse in their homes
•
Respect

Girls initially join gangs for the main reason that boys do, which is to feel like they belong. They may join in hope of gaining power and respect; however, they may not be aware that evoking fear in others does not equal respect. Some girls join gangs to gain popularity while others are pressured and/or threatened with violence to forcefully join. The all-girl gangs are no different. Since their presence, they have been making their ways to our schools and putting the lives of students as well as their own lives at great risk. A female gang member is not exempt from physical injury or death from conflict with other gangs, retaliation for crimes that they’ve committed or simply being targeted for their association with a particular gang. They also put their own lives at risk of being expelled from schools, serving time at a jail or being considered a gang member to a gang that has done much wrong. Time and time again, it has come to light that many young girls are lured into gangs by being offered easy access to money or to do their gangster boyfriends a favour or two. In some cases these young girls do not come to realize that by performing what seem to be “simple tasks” for their gangster friend/boyfriend, they are fully participating in criminal activity. If caught, they would be looked upon equally as active members of that gang. Previously mentioned, 20 year-old BC resident Jasmin Klair was arrested in the US for trafficking approximately 24 kilos of cocaine. During the post-arrest interview and subsequent trial, it came to light that Jasmin had agreed to smuggle the drug shipment for only $4000 dollars. The case of Jasmin is not an isolated incident. Young girls getting injured, murdered or getting caught is becoming a reality. Some girls find it “cool” to hide drugs or weapons at their house or in their vehicle for their boyfriend, who is involved in criminal activity. These girls do so with a false sense of security that the police will not suspect them due to their gender. This notion needs to change. Now that we have talked about the presence of girls in gangs, let’s highlight what can be done to prevent girls from joining such gangs.
What parents can do to prevent gang involvement: • Never blindly believe “not my child” • Spend quality time with your daughter. This will keep lines of communication open for a healthy honest relationship. • Encourage your daughter to be involved in extracurricular activities (e.g. recreation centers, volunteer work, sports, clubs, etc.) • Keep track of unidentified expensive articles of clothing, jewelry and/or accessories • Know your daughter’s friends and her friend’s parents

Keeping your daughter safe from gangs means clearly indicating that any involvement with a gang will not be tolerated. Girls need to be told what the dangers of gang involvement are, as well as the consequences of joining one. As much as you may feel like this topic is one that should be limited to your sons or male students, the sad reality is that girl gangs are becoming a major social problem that needs to be taken seriously.

These projects were aimed at disrupting and suppressing gangs and organized crime groups across Canada. On the enforcement side, CFSEU-BC has been doing a great job in investigating and hindering movement of these violent Organized Gangs however there has been a void in raising awareness against gang lifestyle. Now he feels this is the right time to raise public awareness and educate parents and youth with knowledge and the appropriate skills that they could use in their own journey towards happy families and safer communities. He believes that it is imperative to spread the message that we as a community can take an active role at a preventative stage and no one has to fight this battle alone. Turning around a misguided young person starts with one-on-one intervention. Parents who become involved with their child’s life from an early age had a higher chance of keeping their young ones away from negative influence of gangs. f o g n i Bully uth: o Y T B LG R E T T E B IT GETS
Around the world, members of the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) community face great discrimination, ranging from being called derogatory names and being ostracized by their friends, family and community to being killed for their sexual orientation. Several surveys conducted in the United States and Canada indicated that sexual minority youth are much more likely to be bullied than heterosexual youth. A 2005 survey

from the U.S. found that physical appearance and sexual orientation are respectively the top one and two reasons a student may be bullied. LGBT youth often miss school to avoid such bullying, and studies suggest they are two to three times more likely to commit suicide than heterosexual youths. In the United States, a 2009 survey of U.S. students in Grades 6-12 found: 85 per cent of LGBT students reported being verbally harassed at school in the previous year because of their sexual orientation, 40 per cent reported being physically harassed and 19 per cent reported being physically assaulted. So are the experiences of Canadian LGBT youth any better? Not really. The 2009 Canadian Climate Survey on Homophobia found: 59 per cent of LGBT high school students reported they were verbally harassed, 25 per cent indicated being physically harassed, and 73 per cent felt unsafe at school. Earlier this year, some parents in Burnaby protested the Burnaby School Board’s decision to draft a policy that would support LGBT students and staff – a protest that was met by a counter-protest. (More recently, a study has found that schools that have inclusive policies such as Gay-Straight Alliances have less students who binge drink.) What about incidents involving members of the South Asian community? Well, there really aren’t any specific statistics, but what we do know is that in the past decade or so, several South Asian men have been charged with attacks on same sex couples. These attacks prompted the Province and Xtra! Vancouver newspapers to shine a spotlight on our community and questions were raised about its level of tolerance towards LGBT people. In response, several LGBT South Asians pointed out that homophobia and intolerance
are a concern amongst all communities – and the statistics above certainly corroborate this. This doesn’t mean that we can’t do something about it within the South Asian community. In particular, we should ask how some men develop their ideas on masculinity and why some of them drink so much that they act in ways they otherwise might not (although of course alcohol isn’t an excuse) – that’s a question I think we can probably ask of all men who are verbally or physically violent towards members of the LGBT communities. I think we should also be telling our youth to treat others the way they want to be treated – that just like they wouldn’t want to be bullied for the colour of their skin or for what religion they may practice, youth who may have a sexual orientation that is different than theirs also deserve to live free of discrimination and bullying. For those who are uncertain about their sexual orientation, or are LGBT, you should check out a website called It Gets Better. Dan Savage, an author and one of the best advice columnists in the world, started the It Gets Better Project in 2010 to help prevent suicide among LGBT youth. The website for It Gets Better is www.itgetsbetter.org For those who are allies of members of the LGBT, you can take the pledge on the website: Everyone deserves to be respected for who they are. I pledge to spread this message to my friends, family and neighbors. I’ll speak up against hate and intolerance whenever I see it, at school and at work. I’ll provide hope for lesbian, gay, bi, trans and other bullied teens by letting them know that “It Gets Better.” Gary Thandi Genesis Family Empowerment www.desitoday.ca

Clashes between the Hindu and Muslim communities of the Muzaffarnagar district, Uttar Pradesh, India have claimed 50 lives and injured 93. 41,000 have been displaced in what is described as the ‘worst violence in Uttar Pradesh’ in recent years; for the first time in 20 years, the army has been deployed in the Indian state. The original cause behind the rioting and violence is under dispute but according to some media reports, the violence was triggered when a Muslim youth was stabbed to death by two Hindu youth after being accused of harassing their sister. A Muslim mob then stoned the two Hindus to death. Since the stoning, police have failed to deal with perpetrators and a series of inflammatory speeches made by politician from various parties stoking tensions between Hindus and Muslims who have previously lived in this area in relative harmony since India’s independence in 1947. The horror stories began surfacing from September 22 onwards as the police were sifting through the hundreds of complaints of riot victims living in relief camps. Reports of sexual assault, murder and looting started to surface. Many girls are missing, and so far, five criminal complaints of gang rape have been registered by the local police. According to Human Rights Watch, one woman described how she tried to escape an attack on her home by a mob of men, but five of them caught her and raped her. It took the victim three weeks to speak out due to fear. Another woman who was raped during the riots told media that the rape was so shameful she initially didn’t even tell her husband about it. Her rapists were from her village, some of them neighbours whom she had known for years. In the village of Loi, homeless victims from nearby villages like Fugana, Lisarh and Bahawadi have taken refuge. A 50 year old woman tells reporters that while escaping from rioters in her village, she lost hold of her five year old granddaughter. As the woman turned to look for the five year old, she was taken away by the men who had initially attacked the family. They now fear the worst, and believe the five year old was thrown into their home, which was set on fire. Indian activists who have visited riot-affected communities report that women may have suffered sexual assault, including rape, but have not registered criminal complaints because of the fear of reprisals, stigma, and a lack of faith in state institutions. They are therefore unable to access crucial services including psychosocial counseling, legal aid, emergency medical care, and reproductive health services responsive to the effects of sexual violence. Instead of taking steps to create an environment that builds the confidence of rape victims, initial responses by police officers recording criminal complaints indicated the opposite. When Human Rights Watch spoke to two officers in charge of the police stations in Muzaffarnagar where the sexual abuse complaints have been filed, both of them raised questions over the legitimacy of complaints pointing to the delay in registering them.

Andrea Fernandez was found by police wandering topless along the median strip of a busy highway in Bogota, Colombia. She was badly beaten and alone. The last thing Fernandez recalled was holding her newborn baby on a city bus, three days earlier. Fernandez was one of the hundreds of victims of the home-grown drug called scopolamine, which has been embraced by criminals in Colombia. Police believe Fernandez’s son was taken by an infant trafficking gang. Scopolamine is a medicine widely used for motion sickness or tremors but in Colombia, is a scary zombie drug called ‘devil’s breath.’ In a recent document, Vice called scopolamine or ‘burundanga’ the ‘world’s scariest drug.’ That’s because
scopolamine is a potent weapon to Colombian criminals who use it to put people into a zombie-like state where they lose their memory and free will, and can be convinced to do anything that they’re told. Finding the drug in Colombia is not hard. The tree which naturally produces scopolamine grows wild and is so famous in the countryside that mothers warn their children not to fall asleep below its yellow and white flowers. The tree is popularly known as the "borrachero," or "getyou-drunk," and the pollen alone is said to conjure up strange dreams. Scopolamine has a dark history in Colombia. Legend has it that Colombian Indian tribes used the drug to bury alive the wives and slaves of fallen chiefs, so www.desitoday.ca
that they would quietly accompany their masters into the afterworld. These days, Burundanga is often slipped into beverages, and because it is odorless and tasteless, unsuspecting victims are none the wiser. Victims of the drug range from high-profile politicians, US Embassy employees to average Colombians. Colombia police reported nearly 1,200 cases of people victimized by the zombie drug. Since the 1970s, Colombian criminals have used scopolamine in order to rape women, force women into the Colombian sex trade, empty out houses and apartments, and even abduct children. It is also believed that many of these crimes go unreported because they involve married men frequenting bars and brothels, who are too embarrassed to fess up to what happened. Maria Fernana Villota, a nurse at San Jose University Hospital in Bogota, Colombia told reporters about the repeated and devastating effects of the burundanga drug. “People go out to party and they wake up two or three days later on a park bench,” she says. “They arrive at the hospital without their belongings or any money.” Villota receives several scopolamine victims each week. In the early 1980s a Colombian diplomat was arrested in Chile for trafficking cocaine. It turned out he had been dosed with scopolamine then, while under its effects, agreed to carry a stash of cocaine in his diplomatic pouch. The charges were eventually dropped on the grounds that he had been doped. In 2012, kidnappers used the drug on the parents of a 7-year-old girl in northern Antioquia, and then took the child. She was rescued two months later. But because victims remember almost nothing about these encounters it’s often impossible for them to provide police with descriptions of the perpetrators. There are so many scopolamine cases that they usually don© t make the news unless particularly bizarre. One such incident involved three young Bogota women who preyed on men by smearing the drug on their breasts and luring their victims to take a lick. Their victims readily gave up their bank access codes. The breasttemptress thieves then held them hostage for days while draining their accounts. Colombia is home to the most violent cities in the world including Medellin, Cali, Bogota and Buenaventura. The country also has the tenth highest rate of kidnappings per capita in Latin America. Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada advises Canadians against all travel to most rural areas of Colombia, Buenaventura, and the southern parts of La Guajira. That being said, many tourists who have travelled to Colombia state that www.desitoday.ca
the ideas of a “coke-soaked land still lost in the days of the Escobar gang” are false and offensive. While many Colombians can remember growing up in a gangland
battlefield, tourists claim that Colombia does not remain a gangster’s paradise as the drug war has migrated north, closer to the US-Mexico border.

LOVE & RELATIONSHIPS to be honest. A sociopath is opposite to this. A sociopath actually feels uncomfortable telling the truth. A sociopath will make up huge stories, lies that will get them caught later on. When you are close to revealing the lie, they will further lie to protect themselves. They are consumed with protecting their lie.
Is very dramatic Sociopaths are always dramatic with their big, manipulative and deceptive stories. They appear to be larger than life, always charming and always have a story to tell. They are dramatically telling lies, manipulating, deceiving, being dramatic victims, or dramatic pleadings that they will change. Whatever they do, they will always seem larger than life.
Immaturity Most sociopaths are also very immature. Because they cannot learn from mistakes and keep repeating the same mistakes over, they are unable to grow up, and act in a more mature manner that has respect for another human being, for their rights, their welfare or thinking about their needs. They are selfish and only think of their own needs. A sociopath is unable to put the needs of others before their own needs and thinks that the entire world revolves around them.
Lack of remorse, guilt or shame We’ve all dated a person that seems a little, well...off. Whether it’s the insanely wild lies, oversized egos or glints of manipulative behavior, you may wonder to yourself: Am I dating a sociopath? Well not to scare you, but your partner, or ex-partner if you’re smart, might actually be one. According Martha Stout, author of The Sociopath Next Door, 4% of the population are sociopaths. What IS a sociopath you ask? A sociopath is a person with a psychopathic personality whose behaviour is antisocial, often criminal, and who lacks a sense of moral responsibility or social conscience. Some famous sociopaths include Charles Manson, Ted Bundy, Dean Arnold Corll, Jim Jones, Marshall Applewhite and Robert John Maudsley. Not sure if your perfect mate is actually a sociopath? Below are some common traits that you should regard as red flags.
Comes on strong and moves fast If you meet someone who is keen to move the relationship forward at super speed, be aware. A sociopath does this to stop you from changing your mind about the relationship, from seeking opinions from other people, and by increasing the maximum amount they can scam you for. A sociopath is keen on what can be taken from you. The sooner the process can begin and you are hooked, the better.
They want to spend all their time with you and shower you with attention and flattery At first it can feel flattering. Your partner has zoned in on you as an appropriate target, makes you the centre of attention and focus of their world. They bombard you with telephone con-

versations, texts and want to be with you every minute of the day. While at first this can be a welcome change from the distant relationships of your past, after awhile you’ll want to see your friends and family, and wish that your partner had their own circle to spend time with. But alas, you become as inseparable as twins and your relationship moves incredibly quickly, often before you are ready.
You have a soul mate connection, instantly A sociopath does not experience real true emotions, and is capable of mimicking the emotions of others. A sociopath can mirror you to be your perfect partner. If you’re surprised at how much you have in common and feel that you have a deep connection which almost feels spiritual, it could be a genuine connection or it’s a sociopath who has already assessed you and is now mirroring everything that you need and want your partner to be, back to you.
Sexual charisma and magnetism All sociopaths have a great deal of testosterone. They will stare you straight in the eyes, a look which can feel sometimes uncomfortable. As sociopaths do not particularly care what others think of them and have big egos you will feel a great sexual chemistry. Before you sleep with them, they will brag to you how amazing that they are in bed. Mostly, this is the one time that they are telling the truth.
They are compulsive pathological liars, and when confronted will do anything to protect the lie Most people feel uncomfortable telling a lie, and usually need to confess the lie and have a need
When a sociopath has had a sociopathic meltdown (remember most of the time he/she will have a mask on), you will see signs of insanity. The sociopath is deceptive and manipulative, and will cheat, lie and con. But you will not be aware of this. When the sociopath is caught in his actions, he/she will show a total lack of remorse, guilt or shame. A sociopath will never admit to wrong doings, instead will either blame someone else, or ignore you, and your pain and move onto a new source for supply.
Sociopaths seek to dominate others and “win” at all costs They hate to lose any argument or fight and will viciously defend their web of lies, even to the point of logical absurdity.
High level of intelligence Sociopaths tend to be highly intelligent, but they use their brainpower to deceive others rather than empower them. Their high IQs often makes them dangerous. This is why many of the bestknown serial killers who successfully evaded law enforcement were sociopaths. In relationships, sociopaths are the epitome of Machiavellian creatures. They are duplicity incarnate, with a polished self shown to the world and a covert, hidden self that has a rigid and calculating agenda: assume the highest level of the social hierarchy and win, win, win. It is often the kindest and most trusting individuals who suffer the most at the hands of sociopaths, and the healing process for these individuals continues long after the relationship has ended. If you find yourself in a relationship with a sociopath and want to get out, be prepared and arm yourself with a support system of friends and family that can help you through it.

LOVE & RELATIONSHIPS
What To Do if you’re
Stood Up
The excitement of a date can be exciting. But what if your date doesn’t show?
enjoy the good company. If your deadbeat date does all back to apologize, tell them it’s okay – you had a great time without them.
Dating isn’t easy and being stood up on a date can create some negative reactions and emotions. Before your manners fly out the window in favor of rage and embarrassment, check out these tips for how to properly handle being stood up.
Don’t blow up their phone
Keep your cool
“When your date doesn’t show, don’t make the next move. Instead, let him or her explain what happened.”
You spent all day thinking about your date, from the clothes to the conversation. You find yourself waiting at the restaurant for 10 minutes, then 20...then 30! You check your phone and email – nothing. As much as you wished it wasn’t so, you realize you’ve been stood up. So do you stay at the bar, get drunk and rant about the noshow to anyone who will listen? No! You play it cool. Firstly, you’re not the first person to be stood up, and you won’t be the last. This may even happen again some way or another. Did you waste your time on an individual that does not have the basic manners to call and cancel? Absolutely! However, this is where your emotional rollercoaster should end. Stay at the restaurant, but instead of drinking Crown and Coke alone, call a friend to meet you. Heck, call two or three of them. Don’t waste your night out on someone that didn’t show – order a delicious meal and 38

Whether it’s a date or just meeting up with a friend, whenever someone is late,
we always call them to make sure everything is okay. This is the digital age, when smartphones and email rule all, so there is no excuse why someone can’t get in touch with you (unless they’re stuck underground). Once you realize that you’re on the verge of being stood up, you call and leave a message. Your first call is always friendly, second will be concerned, third might be annoyed, etc. After about 45 minutes you’ve called five times and it’s clear that your date isn’t showing up. Instead of getting angry, follow this rule: Call once after 15 minutes of waiting. If you feel inclined to call again, leave a message like: “Hey [name of your date], I thought we were supposed to meet at the restaurant at 8 pm. I’m guessing you got held up. Don’t worry, it’s cool. Hope everything is okay. Call me another time to reschedule, have a good night.” What you’re doing is giving them the chance to explain when (if) they call you back.
Leave it to the other person to make the next move When your date doesn’t show, don’t make the next move. Instead, let him or her explain what happened. If you hear zilch from the date, it’s now safe to assume you never will. So it’s time to delete his/her number, erase all emails, do the typical breakup-without-a-real-breakup thing. Get rid of all evidence of their existence. www.desitoday.ca

HEALTH & WELLNESS
You’ve enjoyed your summer holiday and the hustle and bustle of September. As you brag to your friends about the resort you stayed at in Maui, the fresh ocean water and the insanely delicious food, you’re secretly adjusting that top button of your jeans because your pants feel a little snug. If you’re like most people, you’ve probably packed on a few pounds over the summer. There’s no reason to worry, follow these easy tips and you’ll be back on track at your pre-vacation weight in no time. by Am Sahota, Elite Fitness
Face reality The only way to truly know how much damage you’ve done is to face reality and step on the scale. The numbers you’re facing should get you back in gear quickly, so use that motivation to return to your workout routine.
Take your time Your bathing suit is packed away so don’t be in a rush to shed those extra vacation pounds. If you worry too much about how long it will take to lose the extra pounds, you’ll fall off your fitness bandwagon. Slow and steady wins the fat loss race. Remember that most men need to follow a fitness and diet regime for at least two months to see results and women need a little bit longer at three to four months.
Get back into your fitness routine Ease your way back into your regular fitness routine if you totally slacked off this summer. If you were just taking it easy over the summer but continued somewhat of a routine, step it up and get back into your regular fitness routine. If you don’t have a regular fit42
OCT / NOV 2013 News With A Desi View
Burning off your
VACATION FAT ness routine, find ways to fit in extra activity while you’re at it. Take your dog out for a walk, take a hike, walk your kids to school, use your imagination.
Find a fitness buddy Having a motivating exercise partner can help increase the chance that you will reach your fitness goals. If you don’t like working out with a friend, get a personal trainer who can provide encouragement and motivation, monitor your progress, and making exercising more fun. If the cost of a personal trainer is too steep, join a group fitness class or see if your gym has any specials on fall fitness classes.
Clean up your diet Prepare your own meals at home and return to your DIY routine. Each meal you don’t prepare yourself usually packages an obscene amount of calories. Go to the grocery store and avoid the inner aisles where the processed food is found. And remember, one pound of fresh spinach has the same number of calories of a single Oreo cookie – choose wisely, go for low caloric intake and eat proteins earlier in the day to keep you full.
Stay fueled Don’t stay too hungry throughout the day, or come dinnertime you’ll be starving and will plow through food like the apocalypse is imminent. Stay properly fueled throughout the day, eat a moderate dinner, and stop eating. Going to bed a little hungry isn’t a bad thing because overnight your appetite resets and you start off with a clean slate of eating the next morning.
Don’t drink empty calories Alcohol, soft drinks and fruit juices with added sugar are empty calories, and have zero nutritional value. Your body can’t store alcohol so it must be metabolized right away. When you drink alcohol, your body makes metabolizing it a priority over all other metabolic processes. Not only does alcohol not contain any nutrients of its own, but it can impair your body’s ability to absorb nutrients and vitamins from the food you eat. Cut soft drinks and fruit juices from your diet and you will see a difference in how your body looks. Soda, even diet soda, can make you feel hungrier because artificial sweeteners signal the brain to crave additional food. Stick to water and if you need a little something extra to jazz up the flavor, add a few lemon slices, mint and cucumber for a refreshing twist. www.desitoday.ca

HEALTH & WELLNESS A strong memory depends on the health and vitality of the brain. These days, a growing number of South Asians have concerns about of memory less, do the usual online research and panic because they think they have early onset Alzheimer’s disease. Fortunately, this isn’t usually the case. Some common causes of non-Alzheimer’s memory loss are:
Stress: Stress hormones like cortisol move
blood flow away from a part of our brain called the hippocampus which creates new memories and controls our sense of direction. The hippocampus is the same part of the brain that becomes irreversibly damaged in Alzheimer’s disease, which is why stress may cause Alzheimer’s-like memory loss. Persistent stress also shuts down the frontal regions of your brain, which help with planning, organization and execution. The good news is that when you consistently and effectively manage your stress, your memory usually improves.
Sleep:
Sleep is becoming a lower priority and going to sleep late is the norm; studies show it is having an impact on every area of our health. Sleep allows us to process all of the data during our day and consolidate them into memories and learning experiences. Studies have shown increased recall and higher test scores in individuals who sleep more hours. Sleep less and you’ll remember less. Rather than fix the underlying habits and behaviors, many people resort to the chronic use of sleep medications which may buy them more hours, but may have negative effects on cognitive function and memory in the long run.
Inactive lifestyle:
Exercise is one of the best brain boosters around. Studies show that individuals who are sedentary have reduced levels of a vital brain chemical called BDNF (brain-derived neurotropic factor). In addition, regular exercise reduces stress and the negative impact of cortisol. So remember, exercise is never a waste of your time.
Poor diet:
An unhealthy diet can impact how clearly you think and how effectively you recall information. Glucose in particular is the brain’s primary fuel source, so eating foods that cause significant fluctuations in glucose levels will have a negative impact on both mood and

memory. Glucose doesn’t just come from sweet foods, but is also from sources like bread (white or wheat), rice (brown or white), noodles, pasta, and the dangerous hidden sugar in processed foods called high fructose corn syrup (HFCS).
Computer overusage:
Studies are just starting to come out on this, but it appears a brain that is overly reliant on technology is susceptible to reduced memory and cognitive function. Today, if we have a question or are trying to recall information, we usually have access to it instantly on our phones or computers. In the old days, individuals could actually remember at least a dozen different phone numbers, addresses, etc. Our hippocampus, which helps with memory processing, also is our internal GPS device that helps us navigate directions. That function has also been deferred to our phones and portable navigation devices. As exciting as modern technology has become, we must question if our over-reliance on hightech tools is contributing to a weaker brain. Just like our muscles, we know if we don’t use it, you start to lose it. Whether you’re a student studying for final exams, a working professional interested in doing all you can to stay mentally sharp, or a se-
nior looking to preserve and enhance your grey matter as you age, there are lots of things you can do to improve your memory and mental performance. •
• •
•
•
Exercise and stress management are key. Get more steps, try yoga, try mindfulness meditation, get outdoors, etc. Make sleep a high priority. Improve your diet with an emphasis on reducing sugars and excess carbohydrates. Eat more vegetables and fruits for brainprotecting antioxidants and eat healthy fats, especially fish-derived Omega-3s and monounsaturated fats (olive oil, nuts, seeds, avocados). Start hobbies that stimulate different parts of your brain. Learn a language, an instrument, play bridge, chess, etc. Because of an increased reliance on digital devices, our brains need more exercise than ever. Socialize: Human social stimulation helps enhance brain function, so spend more of your free time with family and friends and less time with your devices. Better yet, plan outdoor active social gatherings that also include healthy food. That way you cover some of the most important components of preserving and enhancing brain function.

Throwing back a full-calorie Coke during your cigarette break isn’t part of a balanced diet. But in addition to cavitycausing sugar, the acidic nature of sodas -- even diet ones -- can erode a tooth’s enamel. Lighting up will turn that enamel a repulsive shade of yellow, possibly cause oral cancer and shave about 14 years off your expected life span. No joke.

Keeping your toothbrush in the bathroom makes sense. But the warm, moist environment is ripe ground for germs. Add that to a few miscalculations at the toilet and, well, you get the point. Luckily the solution is simple: Rinse your toothbrush with warm water after each use and tuck it away in a cabinet or drawer in an upright position so it dries out completely.

Not all foods spell trouble for your teeth. Dairy products, for example, are loaded with calcium, which strengthens a tooth’s outer coating of enamel. Onions, on the other hand, have sulfur compounds that fight bacteria.

This one goes against better judgment, but it turns out that brushing after eating can remove more than just the remnants of your midday meal. Without waiting at least 30 minutes, layers of precious enamel can go bye-bye, too.

A daily dose of coffee and tea can result in some serious staining. Fortunately, at-home whitening systems have come a long way since the days of gunky pastes and plastic trays. They’re affordable, easy to use and totally effective.

Bacteria buildup on your tongue might be the reason. Rather than just moving that stinky sludge around your mouth with a toothbrush, use a tongue scraper to completely remove it instead. 46

Almost everyone needs a deep-down professional cleaning two times a year. Indeed, a lucky few can get away with one visit, and those prone to periodontal disease need to go more frequently. But a biannual visit is the benchmark for most. You’ll be able to fix minor issues, prevent major problems and, best of all, leave with squeaky-clean teeth.
Flos t f e
Flossing isn’t about removing food particles. It’s actually about removing plaque -- the substance responsible for cavities, gingivitis and eventually tooth loss. A decent job runs about three to five minutes, but even just 60 seconds of string work can have enormous benefits. Just be aware that if you happen to bleed in the process, your body is telling you it’s time to let a dentist do some digging.
Bu a eas i d
Brushing is by far the single most important thing you can do to keep your teeth and gums healthy. Upgrade your gear by investing in a high-powered mechanical toothbrush, and then make a habit of spending at least two minutes with it both in the morning and at night.

american apparel lauded for supporting
LGBT Rights
American Apparel, known for diverse and provocative ad campaigns, recently put out a search for transgender models. According to the ad, models need no previous experience, just to be over the age 16 and wear “simple, fitted clothing.” The brand, which has used transgender models in ads before, is famous for its strong stance on gay rights, carrying gay culture magazines in its stores and piloting the “Legalizing Gay” movement in support of same-sex marriage in California. But headlines about American Apparel haven’t all been good — the brand often faces criticism for overly sexual ads, and CEO Dov Charney has been the subject of several sexual harassment lawsuits.
Cole Haan celebrates 85-year history In celebration of its 85-year history, Cole Haan’s latest campaign features none other than the great Maya Angelou, along with three other 85-year-olds, all born in the same year as the Cole Haan brand: 1928. All of the “models” were given customized Cole Haan shoes for the shoot based on classic styles ranging from a tall riding boot to a wedge bootie. The campaign, which was shot in New York at Pier 59 in August by Daniel Jackson, launched in September but will appear in the November issues of GQ, Vogue, Elle and Vanity Fair, among others.

By the end of 2014, the company will have given out over one million pairs of shoes in America, a stat which Mycoksie calls “completely humbling.”

The Great Indian Forehead Art hits Hollywood
Bindis have roots in Asia as a symbolic decoration, as well as an aid in spiritual guidance. In India, a woman may wear a red bindi to show that she is married, while in China, the red bindi is a symbol of good fortune. Practicing Hindus and Buddhists use a bindi on the forehead to draw energy to and from the 6th chakra. Though it’s been around for centuries, the bindi is hotter than ever right now.
Bindi’s and Cultural Appropriation The act of stripping a cultural symbol, whether it be food, clothing or social behaviour, from its original culture and applying it to the practices of a different cultural group. Critics of non-South Asian women wearing the bindi say it is generally seen as edgy and fashion forward. Fans and media praise celebrities for their bold “fashion” choices. But when South Asians wear bindis in public, it is a symbol of their failure to assimilate. On celebrities it is cool, but on South Asians it is another thing that makes them different than other girls.

Side braid
Crown braid
The side braid is basically what it says: a braid that falls to one side of the hair. The brilliant thing about the side braid is that it takes only minutes to create, but has plenty of impact. In recent years it became associated with tomboyish, sporty cool, but for fall 2013 it was reignited in a smooth, elegant light.
The crown braid is a type of braid that goes around the head. It’s a style you would likely see while watching Game of Thrones. Whether done cleanly or in a sleek way, it exudes a royal vibe. If you’re going for a vintage and playful look, try leaving it a bit messy.

Braids
To Try This Fall Braids can be girlish, they can be classical, traditional or elegant or punkish. It all comes down to the particular style you’re wearing, and the way in which you carry it. Braids are a staple part of any girl’s hair repertoire, a constant rather than so much a trend; and yet, as far as fall 2013’s hairstyles go, the question is of which braided hairstyles to try.

Fishtail braid
Braid bun
Modern with a boho edge, a fishtail braid is increasingly popular. The main difference with this braid is that it uses four strands instead of just three, giving it that fishtail look.
If a long braid isn’t your forte, opt for a double-stranded braid twist pulled into a bun, like the look from Naeem Khan’s fall 2013 runway.

Choose the right foundation. You’ll want to pick a foundation with a satin finish, unless you have dry skin – then choose a sheer formula. Some great products are Makeup Forever HD foundation ($42), NARS Sheer Glow ($42) or Neutrogena Health Skin ($10) – all these products give a dewy finish while providing great coverage.
Apply powder sparingly If you have combination skin, use the least amount of powder you can. If you have dry skin, skip the face powder all together. The trick to using powder is use as little as possible and apply only to the oily parts of your skin- usually the t-zone.
Use a cream blush Using powder blush can sometimes make your skin look dry and powdery. To give a more dewy finish to the cheeks, use a cream blush. Some great ones are the Stila Convertible Cream Blushes ($25) or the Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge for Lips and Cheeks ($25) as they are highly pigmented and blend well into the skin. A great hydrating cheek tint is Korres’ Cheek Butter ($25). To apply any of the cream blushes, using clean fingers, pat the color over the apples of the cheeks.
Use a liquid or cream highlighter Adding a cheek highlighter above the cream blush will add a soft glow to the cheeks and give your face a more radiant appearance. Some great products include benefit Girl Meets Pearl ($30), Makeup Forever Uplight Face Luminizer Gel ($29), Laura Mercier Secret Brightener ($30) or Burberry Fresh Glow ($48). To apply, use a small brush and dab the color directly on the top of the cheekbones and come along the temples slightly. www.desitoday.ca

Things you should know before

Hiring A
Your wedding is something you have envisioned since childhood and now the day has finally come when you have found the perfect person. The next step is to find the perfect Wedding Planner. Wedding planning is becoming very popular in the South Asian community, as couples and families want to enjoy the big day instead of fret over timelines, deal with vendors, and troubleshoot unexpected issues. Finding someone to manage the planning portion along with the actual day is a crucial decision couples have to make. There are five important things you should know before taking the plunge with your wedding planner:
Ensure the planner has experience. You want to know that the person you hire has managed weddings similar to yours. You should be confident in their ability to coordinate numerous vendors along with the venue and your family. They need to be able to work well with everyone to pull off the perfect wedding. A good question to ask is to describe a time something bad happened at the wedding and what they did to fix the situation and how it worked out. This will give you a sense of how well the planner works under pressure. Do not make the mistake of judging the planner according to their rates. Just because one is charging more than the other doesn’t make them the better planner. The best way to find out about a planner is to book a consultation, talk to their previous clients, and if possible speak to vendors who work closely with them. Ask the planner how they will communicate with you during the planning process. Depending on the pack56

ferred vendor list” since your planner may recommend those who pay a commission instead of who would be the perfect fit for your wedding or for you as a couple.
“Planning a wedding is difficult, especially with family and work obligations, be sure that the person you hire is in tune with what you want and is able to deliver with a smile” age you purchase, communication may differ. Ensure that you ask the following questions to avoid any surprises. 1. What is the turnaround time for emails during the busy wedding season and during the off season? 2. Are face to face meetings included in the package or is it via electronic means? 3. Ask if a “Site Visit” is included in all the packages 4. Is there unlimited access to the planner (via electronic means) or is it limited based on the package purchased? Thirdly, a very important item to ask your planner is if they take “Kickbacks” or “Commission” from their preferred vendors; many wedding planners take commission from their “preferred vendors”. The conflict of interest here is obvious as this skews the “pre-
Be sure to ask your potential planner if they are the person that will be at your wedding/reception. Sometimes, due to double bookings, they may be sending someone else on the actual day of the event. You want someone who will be with you throughout the process including the actual day. You will develop a relationship with the planner and become comfortable with them, this is key when it comes to being stress free at your wedding. The same person that has helped you plan your wedding should be there with you on your wedding day. This will ease a lot of stress for you. When meeting your planner getting a good vibe from them is important. You are going to be spending lots of time with this person and need to ensure that you are both not just comfortable with each other, but you are going to enjoy each other’s company. Planning a wedding is difficult, especially with family and work obligations, be sure that the person you hire is in tune with what you want and is able to deliver with a smile. Moreover, the perfect planner moulds well with the family and creates a pleasant environment. This is the biggest day of your life, and perhaps the largest event you will plan; make sure you have the right person in your corner to ensure a flawless and fabulous wedding. HOW TO
WORK WITH A
CONSULTANT? As a business owner there will be a time when you realize you need outside help. It can be difficult to step outside the ‘business owner’ shoes and fully and effectively assess where your business is at, and the best path to success and growth. Often hiring an employee isn’t a feasible solution to your growth or business problems, as the employees becomes just as engrained and biased as you are. Hiring temporary help in the form on a consultant can be helpful, and in the long run, cost effective. Without added costs of benefits, work space costs, and vacation pay, a consultant can help you with your business needs. Consultants often specialize in a specific field, so they are well equipped to look at your problem area, and you can be sure you are getting an expert. Hiring a good consultant can be a daunting task, so what are some tips for a success client/consultant partnership? •
Do your homework and learn about the consultant you are considering. Talk to other people, engage in conversations with your consultant and ensure you are getting the expertise you require. This can require time but it is always worth the investment. If it doesn’t feel like a good fit, don’t engage. • Know who you are hiring. If you’re looking for assistance with marketing and social media, hire an expert on marketing and social media. Remember that self-taught experts are a dime a dozen, if you’re looking for the best of the best, you’re looking for someone who has practical and educational www.desitoday.ca

experience. You wouldn’t pay your neighbour’s 16 year old kid who knows how to get followers on Facebook big bucks, make sure you’re not throwing your money away to the wrong consultant. If you’re unhappy with someone early on, let your consultant know. It’s never fun to deliver bad news but if you’re unhappy with something, how can the consultant fix it if they don’t know there is a problem? Be reasonable and remember you’re not the only client. Yes, a great consultant will jump through hoops for you. Just remember that they are often jumping through hoops for others. If you wanted them full time, you could make them staff. Just because they are consultants doesn’t mean they are available at your whim – unless you are willing to pay the “at-your-whim” fee. Know what you expect, clearly articu-

late it and then measure it. Once this is established, if the project drifts from the original scope, make sure both parties agree to and understand the new expectations. Have a very clear idea of your expected project outcomes. It is often best to prepare this in conjunction with your selected consultant. Remember that a consultant only has the information about your company that is readily available or that you’ve provided to them. Don’t expect your consultant to know your quarterly numbers from three years ago if you’ve never disclosed this information to them. Pay in a timely manner which is generally less than 30 days.
Working with a consultant can be a rewarding experience. Be open to challenges from your consultant, and listen and provide feedback. Remember, this is YOUR business and a consultant is hired to help you be the best you can be.

CAREER & BUSINESS
STARTING YOUR OWN BUSINESS As a society we value money above all else. Even things like oil and gold, substances deemed preciously all over the world, are revered as much for their monetary value as they are for their actual function. Given our dependency on currently, there are a few ways you can go about earning some. You can exchange your time and labor for money, also known as having a job. You can perfect a skill to the point where

people are willing to pay you money just to see you perform, as with athletes and musicians. Or you can do what those of us incapable of doing any of the above things do, which is to go into business for yourself. Everyone daydreams of starting a business, which is normal. Even if you enjoy what you’re doing and are well compensated for it, it is human nature to want to work for yourself. The idea of paving your own way is engrained in us culturally, and yet while no one ever says, “I want to be a piece of a giant, multinational machine when I grow up,” that’s usually what happens. If you’re one of those people who want to be their own boss, pulling the trigger and making it happen is hard. There is no bad reason to catch the entrepreneurial bug, but some are better than others. If you simply had a bad week at work or have a boss you dislike in a career you otherwise enjoy, that’s probably not enough to motivate you to really throw yourself into creating something on your own. Do you do something so well that you could leave the confines of a corporation and still make money? Have you thought of something that doesn’t yet exist? Do
you want to change the world? Do you see few other viable options? No entrepreneur has ever launched a successful business based on the first idea that popped into their head. The road to success is paved with dozens of failures, even if most of your ideas never make it out of your own head. Getting the gears turning is the first big step to eventually launching any business. It may require months or years of tinkering or revision, or it may all of a sudden come to you. Either way, you have to get into the mindset that you’re going to create something. Starting a business is a lot like having a child, in that as soon as you announce it, everyone has an opinion as to how you should go about handling it. Some people will have good intentions, but their advice will be so far from what you envisioned that you’ll wonder if they actually listened to your idea to begin with. Others will criticize or outright chastise your idea, dooming you to failure or writing you off as someone a few cards short of a full deck. That’s OK. Since so few people ever actually do what it is you’re trying to do, they may just be jealous of your decision to pull the trigger and strive for greatness. It could also be that because they’ve always worked for an employer, they’re almost incapable of wrapping their heads around the idea of making something from nothwww.desitoday.ca
ing. Either way, you can’t get discouraged. That’s not to say there aren’t volumes of good advice out there, but assuming you put any thought into it at all, it’s ultimately your vision and yours alone. The biggest barrier to entry in the startup world is the perception of cost, and at one time that was a very real barrier. If you wanted to open a store, you needed retail space and product to sell. If you wanted to manufacture something, you needed materials and equipment. Thanks to the internet, that cost barrier has morphed into more of a cost speed bump, especially if you’re looking to provide a service rather than a good of some kind. It’s easy to get overwhelmed when you read about tech start-ups raising millions of dollars in funding, but if you’re willing to hack it at the start, you simply don’t need that. Coming up with a sound idea is unquestionably tough, but actually getting off your butt and making it happen is even tougher. It’s easy to get complacent by having a winning idea that can never fail because you’ll never test it. You also won’t make any money that way. That first step, be it writing some brand copy or simply buying a domain name, is the hardest you’ll take, but once you do, the floodgates will open. If you truly believe in your idea, take the first step, and then aim to accomplish one or two things per day. You’ll be amazed how quickly things will snowball.

Jewellery Designer to Indian Celebrities
Manali Vengsarkar
Manali Vengsarkar is making waves in the Mumbai fashion scene. After winning several international jewellery competitions, Vengsarkar took additional courses to learn about the technical end of jewellery manufacturing. Armed with newfound technical know-how, the ex-cricketer’s celebrity wife continues to dazzle Indian celebrities with her exquisite pieces. Vengsarkar has a background in fashion design from Mumbai and Milan, and worked as an exporter of fine leather accessories to countries like Germany, Australia, and Italy. “I started my own business and set up a factory at the age of 18, but shortly after I got married and had my son, I decided to shut down my factory. Being a creative person I needed another outlet and began designing jewellery,” says Vengsarkar, the Mumbai native. After taking a course in jewellery design to further hone her design skills, Vengsarkar started designing her own jewellery, and while travelling around the world with husband Dilip Vengsarkar, began designing jewellery for her friends and a select international clientele. Her line, Manali Creations, is contemporary and classic, and each unique piece is timeless and elegant, as is her own personal style. The jewellery designer uses semi-precious and precious stones to create classic pieces in a scale larger than average. She uses unique antique colored stones and coins, and transforms them into her trademark bespoke contemporary pieces. Vengsarkar dreams of one day designing for the red carpet. “My jewellery has ended up on the red carpet through stylists 60

who have picked up pieces for celebrities, but maybe one day soon my brand will be represented on the red carpet as a standalone brand,” she says. Although fashion is her first passion, Vengsarkar feels it is important to give back to the community and is involved with social programs in Mumbai. Lending her celebrity status to social work like seniors issues and universal education programs for street children, has allowed the issues to get international exposure. www.desitoday.ca

DR. ALY KANANI PAIRS HIGH QUALITY ORTHODONTICS CARE WITH COMPASSION FOR PATIENTS IN THE LOWER MAINLAND 62
OCT / NOV 2013 News With A Desi View
For many residents of British Columbia, the search for superior orthodontic care is over. Dr. Aly Kanani pairs a passion for excellent service with state-of-the-art technologies like digital radiography and paperless charting, allowing his practice to be eco-friendly, as well as efficient with that time that patients spend in his office. His practice endeavours to offer the most compassionate and advanced orthodontic care to their patients that they can. They believe that to deliver high quality clinical care requires a highly qualified, enthusiastic and committed team, and Dr. Kanani’s staff is in constant search of opportunities of continuing education in order to implement the newest techniques and technology into their practice. After receiving his Bachelor of Science degree from McGill University, and a Masters in Economics and Management at the London School of Economics, Dr. Kanani then completed his formal professional dentistry training and another Masters in High Education Administration at the University of Pennsylvania. He went on to complete his post-graduate university residency training in orthodontics for two additional years in Michigan, earning a Masters of Science degree in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics. Since 2005, Dr. Kanani has owned and operated orthodontic practices, successfully treated several thousand children, teen, and adults, and has also previously served for two years as an assistant clinical professor at the University of British Columbia Dental School. Some methods used at Dr. Kanani’s practice include In-ovation Braces System, which uses a light force system where the wire is able to glide within the brackets, causing less tension, so they are a lot more comfortable to wear compared to traditional braces. Lingual braces are another option, which are placed on the tongue side of the teeth so that they are not visible to other people when you talk or smile. His practices also offer Invisalign and Invisalign Teen braces which are clear and removable and don’t require any brackets or wires whatsoever. Invisalign is unique in that there are no wires or brackets involved. It’s similar to wearing a clear retainer, in that it’s a smooth plastic tray worn on both the upper and lower teeth. You wear each set of trays for about two weeks until you move to the next set in the series. Each set progressively moves the teeth into their desired position. You can remove the trays for eating and normal oral hygiene, so the maintenance and impact on your everyday activities is minimal. In fact most of the time, people won’t even notice that you’re wearing them. Dr. Kanani has been able to provide Invisalign care to several patients that had previously been told by others that they were not candidates for this technology. It is for this reason that he sees patients from all over the province and even other parts of Canada. When patients choose Dr. Kanani’s practice, they can expect a comprehensive care plan. They provide any needed fluoride, oral hygiene aids, sports mouth guards or other accessories that patients may need, all included with routine care. Staff ensures each patient’s experience is enjoyable, and they are extensively trained to offer assistance with any related issues that arise with your treatment. Many of Dr.Kanani’s staff have training beyond what is required by law and have accumulated several years in the orthodontic field. They also have an on-site laboratory, which allows them to produce many of their appliances without having to send them to an off-site lab. This results in excellent quality control and more effective patient treatment. They are proud to have joined the BC Orthodontics Group, a highly respected group of orthodontic specialists in the lower mainland that adhere to “best practices” in patient care and clinical management. In addition to running his successful orthodontic practice, Dr.Kanani generously gives to the community. His donations to the UBC Faculty of Dentistry resulted in the naming of “Kanani Conference Room 1” and “Kanani Conference Room 2” for use by dental students, university faculty, and professors. By being active in leadership positions in several orthodontic and dental societies, it helps Dr. Kanani to offer the best care possible to his patients. Orthodontics is a journey that will ultimately not only affect patients’ smile, but also their self esteem, and the positive perception they portray to others. www.desitoday.ca

FOR THE FILLING • • • • • • • • • •
5 tablespoons unsalted butter 1 medium yellow onion, diced small (1 1/2 cups) 10 ounces button mushrooms, trimmed and quartered 2 garlic cloves, minced 1/2 cup all-purpose flour (spooned and leveled) 4 cups low-sodium chicken broth 1 cup frozen peas Coarse salt and ground pepper 3 cups shredded cooked chicken (15 ounces) 1 tablespoon chopped fresh rosemary (or 1 teaspoon dried)
Make the crust: In a food processor, pulse together flour, sugar, and salt. Add butter and pulse until mixture resembles coarse meal, with a few pea-size pieces
of butter remaining. Sprinkle with 3 tablespoons ice water. Pulse until dough is crumbly but holds together when squeezed (if necessary, add up to 2 tablespoons ice water); do not over mix. Form dough into a disk, wrap tightly in plastic, and refrigerate until firm, 1 hour or overnight (or freeze, up to 1 month). Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Make the filling: In a large pot, melt butter over medium-high. Add onion and mushrooms and cook until softened, 8 minutes. Add garlic and cook until fragrant, 30 seconds. Add flour and stir to coat vegetables. Slowly add broth, whisking constantly until sauce is smooth. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, and simmer until thickened, 5 to 7 minutes. Stir in peas. Season with salt and pepper, then stir in chicken and rosemary. Pour filling into a 2-quart baking dish. On a floured work surface, roll out dough to 1/8-inch thickness. Place dough over dish and fold overhang inward while pinching to crimp edge. Cut vents in dough. Place dish on a rimmed baking sheet and bake until crust is golden brown and filling is bubbling around edge, 45 to 50 minutes. Let cool 15 minutes before serving.

HOTREADS
There’s nothing more relaxing then cozying up next to a fire place with a book in hand while the rain or snow beats down on the street outside. If you’re looking for some extra sizzle to keep you warm this winter, pick up these hot reads.
Beautiful Stranger
Wallbanger
Twisted Perfection
by Christina Lauren
by Alice Clayton
by Abbi Glines
A strong sequel to Beautiful Bastard and Beautiful Bitch, Beautiful Stranger introduces readers to Sarah Dillon and Max Stella. Escaping her cheating ex, finance whiz Sara Dillon has moved to New York City and is looking for some excitement, with minimal strings attached. After meeting sexy Brit, Max Stella, at a dance club, her one-time hookup quickly turns into more as the two begin hooking up in places where anybody could catch them.
With a new apartment in San Francisco, a flourishing career, an office overlooking the bay, great friends, and the best cat ever, Caroline Reynolds is after something that has been eluding her: a great O. Adding insult to her lack of a proper orgasm, she has a gorgeously oversexed neighbour with the loudest late-night wallbanging she’s ever heard. When the wallbanging threatens to literally bounce her out of bed, Caroline confronts Simon Parker, her heard-but-never-seen neighbour. The tension between them is thick, and what ensues is wild, funny and witter banter.
Having lived her whole life with a mentally ill mom who kept her indoors all the time, Della Sloane finds her life unexpectedly changed when her mother dies. Struggling to find herself, Della decides that a road trip is the best answer. Throwing caution to the wind, Della meets Woods Kerrington. Woods has never been one to be attracted to fragile women; he isn’t in for the work – just the pleasure. A night of naughty fun is exactly what is on his mind when he lays eyes on Della at a gas station. What neither of them counted on was getting their hearts attached, or their paths crossing again.
Quick and dirty: This book is more of a comedy than a steamy hot romance. Word to the wise, if you’re planning on listening to the audiobook, ear-buds are recommended, and be prepared to have some laugh out loud moments.
Quick and dirty: Each book from Abbi Glines is better than the last. This book is fast-paced, great story line, plenty of hotness, and an abundance of turmoil. Fair warning, this book ends in a good place BUT it is not a stand alone, and has a sequel.
Quick and dirty: The story line makes you wish it was your own, and the characters will make your heart race. The chapters fluctuate from Max to Sara’s point of view, allowing for great character development.
Crossfire Series by Sylvia Day The Crossfire series follows the erotic, emotional and romantic journey of Gideon Cross and Eva Tramell. The first book in the series, Bared to You, centers on Eva Tramell, a 24-year-old woman who is a survivor of childhood abuse. Finding it difficult to overcome her past, Eva is instantly drawn to young billionaire Gideon Gross. The two find a way to heal each other in order to move on from their pasts as they attempt to build a future together. Quick and dirty: If you’re in it for the long-run, the Crossfire Series is perfect for you. Three of the four books have hit book shelves, with the conclusion of the series remaining. If you enjoy the series you have the Crossfire TV series to look forward to. 68

When actor Sanjay Dutt was sentenced to five years in prison for the illegal possession of weapons supplied to the criminals behind the 1993 Mumbai bombings, his predicament shed light on the tight links between India’s booming film industry and Mumbai’s notorious underworld. In 2011, a leaked US diplomatic cable indicated that Bollywood welcomed funding from gangsters and politicians. According to Jehil Thakkar, Head of Media and Entertainment for KPMG, this association stemmed from the financing needs of the industry; until 2000, the film industry was ineligible for bank credit, private equity, and other means of legitimate commercial financing. films were financed by ad hoc collections of investors, many of whom were from the construction and trade industries, who charged interest rates as high as 60100%. The industry also welcomed funds from gangsters and politicians, looking for ways to launder their ill-gotten gains, known in India as “black money”, said the 2011 cable issued by the US Consulate in Mumbai, released by WikiLeaks. In 2000, the Indian film industry was added to the list of industries recognized by the government and eligible for bank financing, a move that theoretically should have helped cut its dependence of the underworld. Let’s be honest, staring at an elaborate dinner setting can be overwhelming. But you don’t have to panic. Just follow our easy tips to survive any fine dining experience.
Fine Dining
Survival Guide Most people won’t encounter an elaborate multi-tiered dinner setting on a daily basis, but when you do see it out of the blue, our first instinct is to panic. Is that your fork or your neighbours? Which glass is for water? Do you eat the meal when it comes or wait for everyone else to get theirs? So if you’re like me and over think the entire meal, here are some quick tips for everyday dining.
the left side of your plate, and a series of spoons and knives on your right (the table is always set for right handed people). The very simple rule is to always work from the outside in; the cutlery farthest away from your plate is for the first course. If you are still unsure what to do, wait and follow your hostess or host.
Start from the outside in
Always take small portions of food at a time and put your cutlery down between each mouthful. When you put your cutlery down, place it on the plate (never back on the table and do not rest it half on and half off the plate); cross the tips of
This is one of the most common problems for people that are used to flatware (knives and forks) being brought to the table with each course. On a properly set table you usually see a series of forks on 72

the two pieces (if there are two) or angle it if there is just one. This tells the server that you are not finished. When you are finished, place your knife and fork together in the centre of the plate vertically. The tines of the fork should point up and the blade of the knife should point to the centre towards the fork.
Cut your food as you eat You should always hold both your knife and fork – you should not cut your food up at the start and then use your fork only (this is an American tradition and is generally fine in America, but not in Europe). The tines of your fork should always point down toward the plate – for difficult foods like peas, you should use your knife to squash them onto the tip of the fork. The fork is not a scoop, do not use it like one. Do not pick up any cutlery that you drop to the floor. It will be replaced by the server.
Wait until everyone is served before eating You must not start eating until everyone has been served. If there are a large number of guests, the hostess may indicate that you may begin before everyone is served. If this is the case, you should begin. If you take a mouthful which contains something you cannot swallow, you should excuse yourself and remove it in privacy. Absolutely do not do so at the table and never place it in your napkin or on your plate for all to see.
dress. When you have finished eating, the napkin should be placed tidily (but not refolded) to the left side of your plate (but not on your plate).
Some other quick tips: • Don’t make a fuss. If you don’t like something, leave it. • Don’t blow on hot food to cool it down. Wait for it to cool itself. • Don’t smoke at the table unless invited to by the hostess. • Don’t photograph the table, it looks desperate. • Don’t move your plate after your meal has been served. • Don’t treat the servers badly. • Don’t eat chicken or chops with your fingers. • Don’t point with your cutlery. • Don’t hold your fork while you drink your wine. • Don’t overstay your welcome
Taste before you salt Do not salt your meal before you have tasted it; it is an insult to your hostess. If you do need salt, use the tip of a clean knife (if a salt spoon is not provided in the salt dish) to transfer some salt to the side of your plate which you can use for dipping.
Correct your posture When you are seated at the table your feet should be firmly planted on the floor in front of you. Do not cross your legs, do not lean back on your chair, and do not shake your feet. Your elbows should be at your side at all times. Sit upright and do not lean over your plate when you are eating; bring your food to your mouth.
Use your napkin correctly A napkin is used for one thing only – dabbing the mouth. Never wipe your mouth with a napkin, you should always dab. Your napkin should be unfolded and placed on your knees. It is never acceptable to tuck your napkin in to the front of your shirt or OCT / NOV 2013

VANCOUVER CANUCKS 2013-2014 PREVIEW After being embarrassed by the San Jose Sharks in the first round of last season’s playoffs, the Vancouver Canucks are heading into a monumental year. The Canucks made headlines off the ice over the summer by the shocking trade of Cory Schneider to the New Jersey Devils at the NHL draft and the hiring of John Tortorella. The Vancouver Canucks are at a turning point in their franchise. This aging core is nearing their expiry date and has one last kick at the can for the cup. With the season approaching, let’s take a look at the roster and make a prediction.
Forwards:
Henrik and Daniel Sedin return for their 13th season with the Vancouver Canucks. Both are entering the final years of the five-year contract they signed in 2009 and are looking for new contracts with the club. I have nothing bad to say about these two, they have given their heart and soul to this team. They have made minor league caliber players look like natural born goal

scorers. I see another solid year for the twins where they average a point a game as per usual. I would love to see Zack Kassian get the opportunity to gel with the twins and be that big rugged goal scorer that will stick up for the two when they are being pushed around. Kassian simply did not get enough of an opportunity with the twins under Alain Vigneault. I see Kassian having a stellar season. Ryan Kesler needs to stay healthy! Ever since the superman-like playoff series against Nashville in 2011, Kesler has just not been able to stay healthy. Ryan Kesler looked like the best player in the National Hockey League in the Nashville series. He has said that he is 100% healthy and is ready for the 2013-2014 season. It would be of great benefit for the Canucks if Kesler can stay healthy throughout the season. I would like to see a line of Chris Higgins and Alex Burrows centered by Kesler. Burrows and Kesler have always had chemistry over the years. Chris Higgins has all the talent in the world; he just needs to be more consistent. The disappearing act in the playoffs must come to an end to for Higgins. The third line is the big question mark for this team. Only a few years ago the Canucks had much depth in the center position. Well times have changed! At the moment the Canucks do not know who will be their third line center on opening night. Bo Horvat was drafted 9th overall but will probably be sent back down to his junior club for the season unless he turns heads during training camp and makes the big club. I see the Vancouver Canucks looking to trade for or sign a veteran centre to fill in the 3rd center position because I would hate to see Mike Santorelli or Brad Richardson iced as the 3rd center. Manny Maholtra would make a better 3rd line center than those two players. I see Jannik Hansen and David Booth as the wingers for the third line. Booth needs to stay healthy; so far he has been nothing but a bust for the
www.desitoday.ca
Canucks and is one of many bone headed transactions that Mike Gillis has made. The fourth line will consist of players such as Dale Weise, Tom Sestito, Kellen Lain and the two mentioned above.
Defense: The Canucks return with defensive depth. Kevin Bieska, Dan Hamhuis, Jason Garrison, Alexander Edler, Chris Tanev and youngster Frankie Corrado all return to the blue line. The X factor to the defensive corps is Edler, who had a season to forget. Edler needs to shake off last season and get back to his old form. Jason Garrison must be placed on the first power play unit. He has one of the hardest shots in the league and it must be utilized. Henrik and Daniel love to have someone with a booming point shot on the power play. Look for Dan Hamhuis to have his best season as a Vancouver Canuck because he is in the running for one of the 7-8 defenseman spots for Team Canada. Andrew Alberts was resigned and Yannick Weber was brought in for depth.
STERLING KITCHENS & BATH Classic Contemporary Urban
COMMERCIAL & RESIDENTIAL
Goaltending:
Roberto Luongo (remember him?) is back between the pipes as the Canucks undisputed number one goalie. You have to wonder where his head is at after thinking his time was done in Vancouver. I think Roberto will have one of his finest years as a professional. Even though it seems like he does not want to be here, he will have a stellar season and be named Team Canada’s starting goalie for the Olympics in Sochi. Look for Luongo to start between 60-65 games this season. Swedish goalie Eddie Lack looks like he will be backing Roberto up for Vancouver this season. Eddie Lack is coming back from a hip injury and may be challenged by Joachim Eriksson who lit it last year in the Swedish Elite league. The 2013-2014 Vancouver Canucks season will be a memorable one. The Canucks will be playing in new division that will include Stanley Cup Contenders like the LA Kings and San Jose Sharks. The Division also has the up and Edmonton Oilers who are loaded with young talent and the Anaheim Ducks who are led by All-Stars Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry are always in the playoff mix. For the first time in five seasons, the Vancouver Canucks will not be division champs. I see them making the playoffs but being bounced early in either the first or second round. As much as I like the players on the Canucks, I think it may be time for management to start the rebuild sooner than later. By Jessy Dhillon

Arpinder Kaur: First Sikh Female Pilot
It’s obvious to anybody who travels that the vast majority of pilots, military or civilian, commercial or private, are men. However, by the mid-1990s about 3 percent of all cockpit crew members in the United States were women — a total of about 3,500, representing a 30-fold increase since 1960. Because most of these pilots were hired in a relatively short span during the pre-2001 boom years, they tended to fall into those unstable lower portions of airline seniority lists, and were most vulnerable to furlough. To wit, their total dropped sharply, to around 1 percent, following the airline apocalypse triggered by Sept. 11, 2001. Then, as regional carriers began hiring like crazy, it started climbing again. Now, with the industry in the throes of yet another downturn, with several regionals laying off staff, it is once again falling. While it’s difficult to say exactly how many female pilots there are at the moment, one thing that is certainly known is how many Sikh female pilots there are: one. Arpinder Kaur, of San Antonio, Texas, a new first officer for American Eagle, the regional subsidiary of American Airlines. As far as anybody knows, she is the only female Sikh airline pilot in North America, and possibly anywhere. Kaur lived in India until age 14, and later spent two years earning her initial FAA licenses and ratings / NOV 2013 76 OCT News With A Desi View

that resulted, in part, from prior lawsuits and/or a reputation for discrimination. Before the previous industry meltdown, United had become home to about 500 women fliers, the highest number at any airline in the world. As maybe you’d expect, affirmativeaction-style hiring at some carriers has incited the same controversies and feelings of resentment in aviation as in other fields: Women are sometimes accepted with lesser qualifications than competing males, a policy that, while not unsafe (all new hires meet minimum requirements and endure the same training), raises the ire of more experienced candidates who’ve struggled to land a job and were passed over. That being said, on-the-job harassment of female pilots is exceptionally rare. Airline seniority lists, meanwhile, regimented strictly by date of hire, ensure equal pay and promotion for every crew member, male or female. Kaur says that co-workers have been mostly supportive, if a bit mystified. “They are quite curious. Most know little or nothing about my religion and its practices, so it’s a good opportunity for discussion.” Kaur’s presence in the cockpit, and the sense of welcome she is apparently receiving from colleagues and the traveling public, are perhaps a sign that not all is still crazy in America. www.desitoday.ca

Although Sikhism is regarded as the world’s fifth largest religion, very few people know what Sikh faith is about. This lack of awareness has had negative repercussions in the UK, especially when Americans have mistakenly equated a turban with terrorism. Since 9/11 there have been attacks on turbaned Sikhs, and in August 2012 Sikh Americans were massacred at a gurdwara in Wisconsin. On September 29th, the Surat Initiative organized an event in New York to educate local communities about the Sikh faith, religious traditions, and to tie turbans on curious people. Volunteers came from all over the northeast and tied over 700 turbans on their fellow Americans. Hundreds of other New Yorkers stopped by to speak with young Sikhs and learns about the religion and the significance of the turban.

Sikh Americans face an extremely high degree of ignorance surrounding their religious practices and beliefs, and a recent survey by Stanford University found that about 70 percent of Americans misidentify turban-wearing Sikhs as Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, or members of the Shinto faith. The complaint to the retailers comes in the wake of a brutal hate crime against a respected member of the American Sikh community, Dr. Prabhjot Singh, a professor at Columbia University and dedicated advocate for the underserved. 2014 Infiniti Q50 The city of Langley has shown significant growth over the last decade. Its aggressive strategy to attract new businesses has resulted in many businesses establishing branch offices and expanding their operations into the area. With such a strong economy comes an increasing demand for luxury living. The Langley Auto Collection is a perfect example of just that. Situated at the intersection of Langley Bypass and Glover Road, this new development is Canada’s very first luxury auto mall, and home of several luxury automotive dealerships. One of the luxury brands you’ll find in the Langley Auto Collection is OpenRoad Infiniti, the newest Infiniti retail and service centre in the lower mainland. Unlike any other automotive environment, OpenRoad Infiniti is small and boutique-like, emulating the feel of a luxurious hotel. As you walk around, you will most likely run into Roger Bhajan, the General Manager of the dealership. With over 25 years of experience in the automotive industry, and most of these years in a management role, it’s of little surprise that the dealership operates as well as it does. He believes in providing guests with the highest level of service worthy and represen-
tative of the Infiniti brand. This attitude towards quality customer service can be found throughout the dealership, from the warm welcomes from the staff to the array of amenities in the well thought-out facility. “We’re a small team here at OpenRoad Infiniti, but we’re a close-knit bunch, and we like to treat our customers like a part of the family as well. We’re also a diverse group, so we’re able to provide service in different languages like Urdu, Hindi, Punjabi, Korean and Persian.” Venturing further into the six-vehicle showroom, you’ll find the award-winning line-up from Infiniti – from the 7-seater JX to sporty G coupe. The intimate showroom allows for more space in other areas of the building, like its comfortable and spacious guest lounges. “It’s all in the guest experience,” says Bhajan. “We encourage people to come visit us, talk to our staff, look at the cars, but most importantly, to just relax and enjoy the environment.” In the showroom, you’ll find the all-new 2014 Infiniti Q50 luxury sedan. This new-toInfiniti model features attractive styling and some of the most advanced technology additions. A head-turner on the outside, it’s a
world of fascination on the inside, with its high-res touchscreen display showing car settings, driver-assist systems, infotainment, and climate controls. Drivers even have the ability to sync their smartphones via Infiniti InTouch™ and use their favourite apps to stay connected to their social network. Of course, the fact that it’s packed with a 328-horsepower, 3.7-litre V6 engine is equally as impressive. “If you’re looking for the latest and the greatest, the Infiniti Q50 is the one. It’s luxury, performance, beautiful styling, and intuitive technology, all in a neat, affordable package,” recommends Bhajan. “We actually offer an exclusive 24-hour test drive of the Q50, so that people can test out the car and get a good feel for it before they make a decision. Offering a better test drive experience is something we do differently at OpenRoad. I would definitely recommend it for people who are currently in the market for a new car.”
