A Letter from Jesse Dement As we talked this year about ideas, I realized just how busy life is here in Hernando and DeSoto County. After a decade of intensive growth, it’s not that this fact isn’t obvious, but rather it feels as if we’re moving into a new chapter of our development. We are reminded constantly of the physical growth as we watch Hernando grow further east and new neighborhoods grow north towards Nesbit. What may not be readily apparent to the newcomer are the deep relationships and true collaborative spirit that have planted many seeds which have now blossomed into young businesses, new parks, and old friendships.

In 2018 we experienced the largest turnout for our summer music series, Sunset on the Square. This annual event truly shows Hernando’s sense of community that we all cherish. I love all of our annual events that are held on the historic square where our sense of community and small-town charm can be experienced everyday with our businesses. The Hernando Farmers Market lives on after a decade, still attracting strollers, dogs, bikers and even guest musicians. Soon, look for new pedestrian crosswalks which will make our walkable, bikeable town even more accessible and safer.

This past year, we celebrated the grand opening of the 26-mile leg of I-269 from Hernando east to Collierville. This 20year project now closes a construction chapter yet opens the world to us. Do you realize that Hernando and Collierville, Tennessee are now geographically closer than ever? The vacant, verdant land that stretches to the east holds endless promise for transportation and commerce.

I could talk all day about my hometown, but instead, will let you explore it on the following pages. We are all about the business of living whether at work, school, home or in the community. For that, we are grateful every day to be a part of your Hernando life.

Despite the growth, Hernando continues to cherish family, friends and faith-which are ever constant in our busy lives. It’s so exciting to watch our town literally grow up together.

A Letter from Mayor Ferguson By the time you read this letter, I will have served as Mayor of Hernando for about 18 months. During this past year, I have enjoyed getting to know more of you across this great community, including the team at the Hernando Main Street Chamber of Commerce. With continued growth happening, a strong partnership between city hall and our business community remains a priority. It’s an exciting time. Last fall, we gathered to cut the ribbon on I-269 that runs through DeSoto County just north of Hernando. We can’t emphasis the importance of this national artery for connecting north Mississippi to bigger opportunities. Businesses have always enjoyed our location due to the proximity of Memphis International Airport and the distribution network; now, we have direct access to Canada and Mexico. Looking ahead, one of our priorities is the McIngvale Realignment Road project. With this development, we will add an exit behind the school that allows access to I-269. We hired engineers in October 2018 and have made a lot of progress.

Mayor of Hernando, Mississippi Tom Ferguson

The Hernando Farmers Market continues to shine. In late 2018, we received news that our market was awarded a $200,000 grant to help expand our reach and encourage even more local farmers and producers to engage in this vibrant micro-economy happening right on our square. On another front, we are proud of the small businesses that have opened doors in our community and are dedicated to helping them succeed. I grew up in Hernando and there’s no place I’d rather be to live and work. From the schools to the parks, I always see a familiar face which reminds me of all the reasons I call this place home. I appreciate the opportunity you’ve afforded us to make it even better. If you’re considering a move to the area or already live in Hernando, we encourage you to read on and explore even more about Hernando.

Fun Facts about Hernando DeSoto County is the only city in the county that offers Excel by 5 to all children from birth to five years old. The original First Presbyterian Church located on Commerce Street was built in 1878, the same year the yellow fever epidemic hit Memphis and Mississippi. Hernando, Mississippi was named one of the Best Towns for Families in 2015 by Family Circle magazine. In 1838, 40 acres were planned and laid out with a 450 foot public square surrounded by 172 lots. In the two blocks around the square there were five streets north and south and five streets east and west. This plan still forms the center of Hernando, the county seat. Hernando’s Courthouse walls are home to a group of murals depicting the travels of Hernando DeSoto in 1520. Given by Fred Goldsmith of Memphis, the murals were hung and restored by S. H. Chism. The Hernando Farmers Market is the largest market in the state and has repeatedly won national recognition from the American Farmland Trust.

The 2018 Hernando Christmas Parade marked the 61st year for the event!

An Episcopal Church once stood at the Church Park location before burning to the ground.

John Grisham wrote “A Time to Kill” during trial downtime at the Hernando Courthouse when he was a lawyer. Hernando now has three markers on the Mississippi Blues Trail honoring The Dickinson Family, Beale Town Bound and Joe Callicott.

Understanding DeSoto County’s Homestead Tax Savings Program If you purchase a property in DeSoto County, it’s important to understand how the Homestead tax savings program may benefit you as a resident. This program is offered through the state to help lower property tax costs.

The DeSoto County Tax Assessor’s office is located in the Administration building, which is located behind the historic Courthouse on the square. For detailed information about required documents, office location, hours and more visit desotocountyms.gov.

DeSoto County’s 7th term Tax Assessor, Parker Pickle, has watched the county grow exponentially since he was first in office more than 25 years ago. Today, the county’s assessed properties value at $1,927,577,030. When he entered his career in 1992, the county property value was at $280,000,000. He and his staff at the DeSoto County Tax Assessor’s office are the primary resource for helping residents understand Homestead.

DeSoto County Tax Assessor’s Office 365 Losher Street, Suite 100 Hernando, MS 38632 662-469-8029

Here are key points about this tax program: • You can only apply for Homestead from January 1 to April 1 each year at the DeSoto County Tax Assessor’s office in Hernando. • Homestead works in arrears. This means your current tax bill actually reflects the prior year value. • If you’re over 65, a 100 percent disabled veteran, or 100 percent disabled through Social Security, you may qualify for additional tax exemptions. However, you must visit the assessor’s office to determine your own status. • Any changes in your personal situation (marriage, divorce, move) may affect your Homestead status.

Raising Miracles Taking care of children in need happens everyday in DeSoto County Taking care of children in need happens everyday in DeSoto County thanks to the hearts and minds of many, particularly through Palmer Home for Children and Apelah both based in Hernando. Both organizations serve as vehicles for care and foster placement.

Presbyterian Church in Columbus, Miss. And as an admirer of Reverend Benjamin Morgan Palmer of New Orleans, Jacobs challenged his congregation to start its own orphanage named after Dr. Palmer.

A private, Christian foster care network Palmer Home has built a solid reputation, drawing strong support for years from the community through fundraisers and volunteers. Palmer Home holds a variety of fundraising events throughout the year, including Shotguns & Sunflower, Tailgate for Palmer and the Mudbug Bash which has drawn more than 1,000 guests.

In 1898, Palmer Home accepted its first child. As the years went on, the Palmer Home continued to expand to the current 110-acre campus in Columbus, Miss. and accept more children. The Hernando campus opened in 2003 on 72 acres and growth has been a major objective the last few years. With the hope of one day serving up to 120 children in Hernando, a $10 million expansion began in 2016 and included the addition of three cottages and the Dr. Hugh Francis Wellness Center.

Chartered in 1895 by the state of Mississippi, the Palmer Home was founded by William States Jacobs, pastor of the First

care, Palmer Home accepts siblings rather than break up families. In 2013, the Palmer Home partnered with Jonah’s Journey, a Christianbased ministry placing children, often newborns of incarcerated mothers, with foster parents. Based out of Nashville, Tenn., these children are placed into the homes of married couples as opposed to living on campus. The average length of a child’s stay placed through Jonah’s Journey is 84 months in Mississippi. Children raised at Palmer Home have gone on to serve in world wars, win beauty pageant titles, and serve in high-ranking government roles. 662-449-2400 or palmerhome.org

APELAH Apelah isn’t a word often heard, yet symbolizes the world to many children in Mississippi. It simply means ‘help’ in Mississippi Native American language and characterizes all that this non-profit organization believes in when it comes to caring for children. Founded in 1996, Apelah provides foster care for special needs children, particularly for medically fragile children whose lives are further complicated by complex medical, behavioral and emotional problems.

“Our children may have diabetes or shaken baby syndrome or have been victims of abuse,” says Tammy Pierce, associate vice president for development and corporate outreach. With two locations, one in Hernando and one in Ridgeland, Apelah reaches children of all ages across the state. For the last 18 years, Pierce has worked with Apelah, personally witnessing the ongoing needs of displaced children--and how the true meaning of help can change a life. Apelah recruits foster families to care for more than 125 Mississippi children every year. Foster parents may be single or married and must be willing to participate in a home study, undergo background checks and attend initial and ongoing trainings. Dedicated staff are available 24/7 and keep in touch with kids long after they are grown. “Even when they reach 18, we continue to have relationships with these kids because we are their family. They will say we taught them how to drive or helped them buy a prom dress.” apelah.org.

Starting Strong at Kaco’s Kids On the east side of Hernando, one building holds a lot of important little people. To be exact, this fairly nondescript 14,000 square foot building holds 165 children from newborns to 12 year olds as part of Kaco’s Kids Childcare. Opened 12 years ago by Tracy Williams, Kaco’s Kids began when she experienced what many parents feel. “I was looking for childcare and everything was just awful. The places were sterile with no apparent love or affection. So, I decided to open a place that reflected my values and I believe those of many parents,” says Williams.

16

And so Kaco’s Kids was born. When Williams moved to Hernando,

Hernando

she found the city to be welcoming and gracious. And more importantly, the need for childcare was great in the fast-growing community. “I saw the need and trend at that time for myself and other families.” Her first order of business was the physical building. She designed it herself, envisioning a place with lots of room and transparency. “All of our rooms have windows so we can always see what’s happening. You can’t hide in my daycare.” Likewise, she treats parents like family, encouraging them to come and go from the locked, secure building. “We don’t bring kids to the door and hand them over. We want parents to come in and feel welcome.”

In the main hallway, Williams points out the family board, a huge area covered with pictures of kids just being kids. “We catch the kids being silly and take pictures for the parents. We leave the pictures up here for three months, then give them to the family.” Not only is Kaco’s Kids a licensed facility, the staff is all trained in CPR, First Aid and the site has an AED defibrillator. Williams travels the state as a statecertified trainer, helping other childcare facilities meet specific standards. She is also trained in CPR.

Beyond all the requirements, it’s apparent that Kaco’s Kids offers a safe, fun learning environment for all ages. In fact, Williams and her staff have literally raised generations of kids. “I have parents who were once here with me as kids and we now take care of their kids.”

Hernando

17

Children are grouped together by specific ages in each room. From the newborn room where cribs line the walls and several staff hold and rock babies to the ever-moving, noise-making three year olds who run to give Williams a hug. And while it may appear to be organized chaos in the room, Williams explains what’s happening. “Everything we do is to prepare these kids for the school environment. They don’t stay in the rooms all day, but learn to line up and go to the cafeteria. Also, even the toddlers are learning how to play in stations in the room and keep toys in a particular station.” Children even learn basic sign language to help them build their communication skills. Behind the building which sits by itself surrounded by woods, a large enclosed playground runs the length of the building. It’s private, safe and not visible to passing traffic. Once a young mother, Williams understands how much pressure new parents face and when expectations seem unrealistic. “Every new parent has ideas about how their child should behave or that life is perfect. It’s not. It’s OK if the child cries or wears pajamas here or if the parent cries, that’s OK.”

18

Hernando

She’s frank. “One reason I wanted to open a place like Kaco’s Kids is because I hold certain values dear. We say a morning prayer and prayer at lunch. We say the Pledge of Allegiance and we say yes ma’am. That may not be for everyone, but it’s what we believe and how we teach kids here.” A lively redhead, Williams moves and talks as much as the toddlers. Kids run to get hugs when they see her and the entire staff is either busy holding babies or helping an older child recognize shapes or colors. Kaco’s Kids Childcare (662) 449-7649

Small but Beloved Church Park renovation symbolizes the spirit of collaboration When Natalie Lynch talks about the renovated Church Park located in full view from Commerce Street, she represents the views of dozens of young women as part of the Hernando Young Women’s Club. A member for eight years, Lynch held many past officer positions including president. A social organization, the HYWC nonetheless exists to accomplish important civic and cultural projects.

The group soon set their eyes on Church Park. “A lot of our members play tennis and there was only a portable toilet available. The park is highly visible and a lot of our kids love that park. It’s small and gated so it’s safe and easy to watch kids.” Located across from the Hernando Baptist Church, it may seem the name comes from that church. However, an Episcopal church, which was located on the site, burned down leaving only the name behind.

“More than 10 years ago, we decided to focus on more civic work and we began the Tour of Homes,” says Lynch. That event continued for the next several years and helped fund the pavilion project at Conger Park, along with funds from the local Hernando Women’s Club.

The HYWC decided to launch the Church Park Beautification Project by first building a bathroom at the park. In 2016, they raised the needed $20,000 to fund the project.

“We started the ‘Spring into Art Silent Art Auction & Drawdown Raffle’ and the fundraiser was a huge success. Together with those funds and a donation from the Hernando Women’s Club we were able to complete the project,” says Lynch. The group worked with architect Doug Thornton of AERC on both projects and Sudduth Construction on the bathroom construction. When the bathrooms were finished, Lynch said something else occurred. “The bathrooms looked so great, the pavilion then didn’t look so nice.” During 2017, the group again raised $25,000 to renovate the pavilion. As of late 2018, the new pavilion was finished. Lynch said future plans include upgrading the playground equipment and finishing with new landscaping. “I enjoy being a part of something with other women and that we can do things that benefit our city,” says Lynch.

Between the Hernando Young Women’s Club and the Hernando Women’s Club, women of all ages have a chance to get involved and form new friendships through meaningful work. The Hernando Women’s Club, founded in 1927, served as the original spring board for the HYWC. Janie Norwood personally understands the connection between the two clubs. “Back in the 1970s, the Women’s Club had a full membership so many daughters and daughters-in-law got together and we formed the Young Women’s Club. Our purpose then and now is to promote the social and cultural in our community,” says Norwood. Over the years, the club has funded projects at Conger Park, built the clock tower on the historic square and contributed to the Old Von Theater. “We gave money for the Church Park projects but the Young Women’s Club really did all the work on that project,” added Norwood.

For Lynch, being involved with both clubs has been a significant part of her life as a young mother. “I’ve met some of my best friends through the club.” And through their generous civic hearts, the entire community benefits. To learn more about the Young Women’s Club or the annual Spring into Art event, visit and follow the club on Facebook.

Parking It Outside Anyone familiar with Hernando can attest to the fact that indoor life blends with outdoor life when it comes to lifestyles. Since 2012 Hernando’s leadership has focused on developing bike lanes, parks, resurfacing a local walking track, and constructing sidewalks especially around schools to provide better access. Surrounded by picturesque agricultural hills and located near Arkabutla Lake, Hernando offers residents ample opportunity to enjoy biking, walking, boating, team sports or one of the city’s parks. Residents can enjoy any of Hernando’s eight parks that range from small neighborhood parks to the larger Conger Park with its multiple swings, slides and playground.

24

Hernando

Just south of Hernando on Highway 51, Renasant Park has taken shape as the newest addition to Hernando’s community parks. Covering approximately 50 acres, Renasant Park even offers dogs their own park destination. The two-acre Hernando Dog Park opened in 2017 and represents the forward thinking of the city’s leadership and community volunteers to establish green spaces as key amenities. Early on, a group of citizens led the effort to raise money and find sponsors for the dog park. Led by Fairway Mortgage, the group also included sponsor County Seat Animal

Hospital. Ongoing funding is made possible through the Blue Cross & Blue Shield Foundation Healthy Hometown and Healthy Heroes grants and a Recreational Trails Program (RTP) grant from the Mississippi Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.

Another key attraction at Rensant is the $130,000 skate park designed specifically for skateboarders. Waves of concrete create a fun, challenging course where rolling enthusiasts can practice their skills. Completely fenced, the Hernando Skate Park is secure and safe.

Completely fenced, the park includes a fountain, jump hoops and benches where dog lovers can visit with dog-friendly crowds while Fido plays with friends or fetches a ball.

In early 2018, Hernando Mayor Tom Ferguson and city officials received funding from two grants to expand the recreation area at Renasant Park through its partnership with the Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi Foundation “Healthy Heroes” grant. The expansion will focus on building a 1.73-mile trail that will connect Renasant Park to the Civic Center. With this multi-use trail, residents will be able to walk, bike or jog to their heart’s content. “The trail will connect the city’s ball fields and the Williams Brook neighborhood to Renasant Park. Half of the trail will be paved and the other half will have a hard limestone base. The entire trail will be built for walking, jogging or biking. The trail head will start at the entrance off of Highway 51 South near the Dog Park, Skate Park and new Pump Track. The track is set up for both young bike riders learning how to ride a bike and those more experienced who want to have fun on the curves and berms,” says Community Development Director Gia Matheny. The trail will be complete the spring of 2019. With children and sports in mind, future development is also centered on building fields for baseball, softball and tee ball. The grant and expansion further symbolize Hernando’s true commitment to healthy living for today’s residents and future generations. What’s a pump track?

This is a small, looping trail system that bicyclists can ride continuously without pedaling. The speed along the pump track is dependent on the ability to gain momentum by “pumping” the tight terrain transitions of the track. This design is particularly good for new bicyclists because they can ride the track without using the pedals and concentrate on how to balance on a bike.

Launches to Legacies From new openings to legacy businesses, Hernando’s vibrant retail shops stock something for everyone. Shopping in Hernando isn’t an ordinary or routine experience. From the town square to the expanding east side of town, the local retail landscape invites shoppers to unique boutiques, handcrafted products, and as always, tailored service cultivated by dedicated shop owners.

Saint Boutique Shopping for clothes is actually fun at Saint. Walking through the doors leads to an experience as tailored as the clothes on the racks. When owner Mary Catherine Strider decided to open the shop, the decision came naturally given her path.

Always attracted to fashion, apparel and helping others, Strider had previously worked at Cutworks in Cleveland, Mississippi. “I’ve loved this industry my entire life.” Her quiet enthusiasm reflects the local trend offered by retailers around the county who prefer to sell on a more personal level than the large box retailers can offer.

A woman’s retail clothing store, Saint carries specific lines fit for all ages from the lithe teen 16-year old to the sophisticated 40-something professional. “I even have choices for the senior ladies who are 70 and older.” Strider likes for each choice to be original. “I do all of my shopping out of town and I want the piece to be here and here only,” she says. In order to keep her inventory fresh and original, Strider shops in Las Vegas and New York City. In today’s market, size is equally important. “I carry a generously-sized line out of California, too.” One popular line Saint carries is Show Me Your Mu Mu which features a bohemian style and feel. Saint opened in 2016 with a rather humorous start. Strider had another name chosen when she was told the store name was already in use. On the phone, she happened to see a sign that said Saint. “My dad has always been a New Orleans Saints fan and when I saw that name, I thought Saint would be a great choice.” In addition to helping each customer find the right style choice for her body, Strider also keeps detailed notes for her customers for future reference. Fall marks a busy season between back-to-school shoppers and the end of the year. Saint holds an annual after-Christmas sale that actually runs the entire month of January. All year long, customers can shop online as well. “We have many people who like to shop online and just drop by to pick up their purchase. It’s incredibly convenient for busy mothers,” says Strider. For those women who really don’t like to shop, Saint promises a different experience. “I really want shopping at Saint to be a pleasant experience and for my customers to leave feeling happy rather than frustrated.” And that alone is worth the trip. www.saint-boutique.com

With the 2018 grand opening of their new building, Hernando now offers massage therapy in addition to the full salon services, including manicures and pedicures. Opened by owner Brooke House, Studio 139’s talented team of professionals help clients realize their own beautiful potential. Massage therapist Britni Bachorski relocated to Hernando from Southaven three years ago and joins massage therapist Katie Matthews to offer the new services. Customers can choose from 30- 60- or 90-minute massages which run the gamut from deep tissue massage to cupping therapy which involves suction cups. “We also have hot stone massage and reflexology,” says Bachorski. Even expecting mothers can enjoy a pre-natal massage. Bachorski decided to join the Hernando team for several reasons. “I really believe in Brooke and her team. Since I live in Hernando, I really wanted to work in the community, too. For those who are a bit reluctant to try a massage, Studio 139 also offers couple massages. “A 30-minute massage is another way to just try a massage if you’ve never had one,” adds Bachorski. A light, modern space, Studio 139 reflects the vibrant, innovative spirit found among retailers across Hernando as the city continues to grow.

The Square Cupboard - 10th Anniversary A beloved fixture on Hernando’s historic square, The Square Cupboard celebrated their 10th anniversary this past July, fulfilling owner Jamie Smith’s personal passion for giving. “After I opened the store, I realized real quick just how much I loved the gift giving process and making people happy,” she says. Always passionate about dishes, stemware and as she says, “all things that go with a home”, the former school teacher took the plunge and opened the business in 2008. “We were living in Brandon and considered moving to Hernando for my husband’s construction business and because his family was here,” says Smith. Ten years ago, she notes wasn’t the ideal time to open. “We actually opened during the recession. But we started out small, offering only four fine china and four everyday dinner lines.” Despite being new to town, Smith says she always liked the square because it was centrally located. “The square is just beautiful and I wanted to be a part of it,” she adds. When the current space became available, she met with the owners and things just fell into place. “The Lord put it all together for us.” The Square Cupboard features a mix of elegant dinnerware and china,

stemware, and a full bridal registry. The infant and baby section has grown over the years--as Smith’s own kids have also come along. Shoppers will find the traditional Mississippi gifts like cheese straws and plenty of collegiate gift items. “We carry Ole Miss and Mississippi State items,” says Smith. Other offerings like a signature press allows customers to customize all types of invitations and paper products. While Etta B Pottery graces the shelves as in other gift shops, Smith says her shop differs in one way. “We were the first store to carry Etta B pottery. She started ten years ago as well so it’s been fun watching each other grow,” says Smith. Paintings by local artists also grace the walls as Smith likes to promote local talents, too. When asked about the name, Smith laughs. “I’ve always loved those big antique cupboards filled with all sorts of dishes so my mind circled around the word cupboard. I played around with that word, and since we were on the square, I included square.” A busy mother and wife, Smith understands the time demands. She enjoys the friends and relationships she develops through her shop, acknowledging the importance of family. “We couldn’t do this without our families.” Customers can look forward to a growing online business, allowing busy parents to order ahead and pick up their purchase. While The Square Cupboard may appear to cater more towards women, she encourages men who may be shopping for a gift to stop by. “We can definitely help men who may need some gift giving guidance.” To get to know Smith and her shop, drop by for a visit or shop at www. thesquarecupboard.com

From Mexico to Canada l-269 opens in DeSoto County On October 26, 2018, the official ribbon fell to the ground during the grand opening of Interstate 269’s final nine-mile segment. The new highway officially opened from Interstate 55 in DeSoto County to State Route 305 in Marshall County after a ribbon cutting ceremony at the Getwell Road Interchange. “We are excited to complete this major construction project. After seven years of construction, Interstate 269 is now officially

open to the traveling public,” said Commissioner Mike Tagert, Northern Transportation District. Motorists are now able to take I-269 from I-55 near Hernando for nearly 60 miles in a loop to Millington, Tenn. Traffic from Interstate 40 will be able to more easily access I-55 and U.S. Highway 61 in the Delta. I-269 also connects Interstate 22 which runs to Tupelo. Recently four-laned U.S. Highway 72 also crosses I-269 near Collierville, Tennessee.

Construction of the approximately $640 million project began in 2011 and consisted of about 26 miles of four-lane, controlled-access highway in Mississippi. The first segment of I-269 from the state line to State Route 302 opened in 2015. The second segment from State Route 302 to State Route 305 opened in 2017. The 26 miles of I-269 are part of a larger Interstate 69 corridor. The 1,600-mile highway is a proposed connector between Canada and Mexico. The long-anticipated opening means significant economic opportunities for north Mississippi and another convenient access route for those coming and going from Hernando.

Fun Facts about I-269 In Mississippi, I-269 begins at the I-55/I-69 intersection north of Hernando, crosses I-22 near Byhalia and continues northeast to the Tennessee state line. • 14 million cubic yards of dirt laid • 863,000 tons of asphalt • 45 bridges consisting of over 92,000 cubic yards of concrete • 286 miles of striping

Inside Out Faith Across Hernando, all walks of faith live and work side by side. This collaborative spirit shines through most when it comes to joining hands through interfaith initiatives designed to fill social, economic and spiritual gaps. When seeking a place of worship, newcomers and residents can choose from traditional services with one denomination or the more contemporary format of non-denominational congregations.

But no matter the path, seeking diversity and social justice remains a priority for the Hernando/Nesbit Interfaith Council founded in 1982 by Sister Margaret Quinn from Holy Spirit Catholic Church. “We are blessed in Hernando with lots of people who want to reach out and help others,” says Chris Greer (Treasurer).

Even after all these years, Greer says that the community efforts of the Interfaith Council remain focused primarily on poverty. “It touches so many people.” Volunteers from 16 area churches work closely together to make the food pantry accessible to the community three days each week on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Families sign up and go through a screening process. While Holy Spirit has 20 volunteers, Greer emphasizes that volunteers come from all area churches. “We couldn’t do this alone. We have men who go to Kroger and pick up food on a weekly basis.” The group also works with Heartland Hands, an organization dedicated to providing food assistance to residents of northwest Mississippi.

Greer explains the Catholic Social Services office in Hernando, run by Sacred Heart Southern Missions in Walls, screens for all of the programs that Interfaith supports. “Through this collaboration and the partnerships with 16 other congregations, our charitable programs remain strong. Hernando Farmers Market More than 10 years ago, the Hernando Farmers Market was started by just a couple of volunteers and only a handful of dedicated souls like Deb Robinson of Pleasant Grove Soaps, Homestead Nursery Farms in Coldwater, and cottage food enthusiasts baking and canning out of their kitchens. The market is still going strong today and has grown into a community attraction on Saturday mornings drawing everything from ukulele players to the arts council. Dogs, kids and families can shop while relaxing among neighbors and friends. In late 2018, the Hernando Farmers market received a $197,677 USDA FMPP grant to help further build capacity. “We are so excited because this allows us to grow. We are currently a centralized market,” says Gia Matheny. What that means essentially is that the market team offers shoppers a central location that acts as a market ATM and SNAP processor. In Hernando’s case, shoppers are given a wooden token with specific value that they can use as currency. The vendors are then reimbursed the value with no additional fees. “Many times people arrive at the market without cash on them and don’t have access to an ATM. Now, we can do the transactions right here. Also, if a shopper is a SNAP customer, then it affords that shopper more privacy and discretion,” says Matheny. For g rowe rs l i ke Ro nal d Clayton, who has been with the market since the start, having a ready market on the weekends helps supplement his permanent produce stand located just north of the square on highway 51. Originally from DeSoto County, he sells all types of produce.

“I think my favorite is still tomatoes,” he says. He encourages new growers to start with raised beds and grow small amounts until they learn how to grow through the seasons. Matheny’s enthusiasm for the market is evident. “I think the most satisfying part is to see farmers come to Hernando and be able to make a profit because it’s hard for the small farmers.” To keep abreast of all the market news, follow the Hernando Farmers Market on Facebook.

Dine in, Dine out From breakfast to evening drinks, Hernando’s dining scene serves up originality at every door as local restauranteurs believe in building authentic culinary experiences. It’s hard not to start the day right at Lady Bugg Bakery located on Commerce Street next to Church Park. Heather Bugg Ries and her team have built a local bakery that delivers everything from fresh muffins and treats to signature cakes and fresh lunches. A newly-added coffee bar allows customers to indulge in their favorite java choice. Around the square, Windy City Grille and AC’s Steakhouse Pub anchor even more dining options. With another location in Como, Mississippi, Windy City Grille has grown under

the leadership of owner Anne Best May and her team who serve up Chicago-style pizzas, live music and a full bar. May opened the original location in Como in 2002, followed by the second opening on Hernando’s historic square. At AC’s Steakhouse Pub, diners can browse a large wine menu and enjoy steaks, salads, appetizers and more. Both restaurants have front patios--perfect for dining out among friends. For restaurant owners, Josh and Katie Belenchia, not only is their restaurant, Buon Cibo, rooted in family, but they take great pride in using local producers for their food. The pair opened Buon Cibo in 2011, and since then, have been leaders in the local food movement. Whenever possible, the Belenchias buy local honey, produce and meats. Katie’s signature homemade pies only rival the soups and specials made from scratch while Josh’s pizzas have become a culinary cornerstone around town. Hernando’s culinary scene continues to grow with new additions. Yellow Sushi & Hibachi Grill brings a new flavor to the city with its sushi and Japanese fare cooked tableside, offering another choice for those out to explore Hernando’s rich culinary scene.

Wesley Meadows Retirement Community For more than 23 years, Wesley Meadows Retirement Community has helped seniors live to the fullest by meeting the needs and lifestyle preferences of every individual. Approximately 100 residents occupy the halls of both the independent living apartments and the assisted living rooms where they all enjoy a lifestyle tailored to their abilities and preferences. As America has gradually deinstitutionalized elder care and offered more tailored living arrangements, more families are turning to a community like Wesley Meadows. Set on 40 pastoral acres in the heart of Hernando, Wesley Meadows has earned its strong reputation for providing excellent care as part of Methodist Senior Services. “First, we are not a nursing home. We are a retirement community,” says Community Director of Marketing and Public Relations, Jamie Cliett. In fact, Wesley Meadows has been named the “Best Retirement Community” and the “Best Senior Care Provider” by the DeSoto Times Tribune reader poll for the last six years. Maybe it’s because Wesley Meadows simply mirrors life. Both the independent living and assisted living residents keep their own furnished apartments, drive their own cars, and socialize as they would if they were in their own home. The difference is they are free from the burdens of home ownership and can feel secure with trained staff just moments away. “Our residents do everything they normally would do at home like go to church, visit with friends, go to the movies, and the grocery store” says Cliett. “Residents still live independently and are very active such as planting gardens, keeping pets and enjoying activities.”

The entire facility was renovated beginning in 2017 and renovations continue today. As apartments become available they are then renovated. Light, clean and airy, the interior decor reflects a warm, cheerful style throughout the hallways and gathering spots. A long row of rocking chairs in a wide hallway solarium overlook a garden and courtyard. Residents gather in the large dining room or in the newly added Fellowship Center to play the ever-popular bingo game. “Bingo is serious business and our family really enjoys it. They can win anything from household items like paper towels to small gifts.” Wesley Meadows’ two Activities Directors plan everything from music to “roll-n-strolls” which allow residents who use wheelchairs or walkers to stroll the main driveway--which was also completely resurfaced in 2018.

Looking to the future, Wesley Meadows is in the midst of a Green House® Capital Campaign to construct a Green House® Home, an innovative architectural approach to communal senior living. “This house will be for memory care residents where a small consistent staff will care for ten people. It’s designed specifically to address the needs of those seniors with mild memory issues,” says Cliett. The homes design is based on the Eden Alternative Principles, an intentional philosophy that focuses on building a physical environment that reflects a true family home. A proven elder care model, a Green House® Home promises to revolutionize senior care living. Many Wesley Meadows residents once called other parts of the country home. “We have locals, but we also have many people who have moved into the area and stayed, even when their kids have left,” says Cliett. Interested residents may tour the campus and have their needs assessed. While the facility is open to visitors, Cliett mentions that privacy and HIPAA compliance keep residents and their personal information safe. Wesley Meadows accepts private pay, long-term care insurance and some veteran’s benefits. Currently, there is a waiting list. As a non-profit Methodist organization, the primary goal is caring for people, not making money.

“Our reputation stands alone. We truly are a family here.”

Taking Care of Caregivers Wesley Meadow’s mission of caring for seniors and families doesn’t stop at their door. In 2019, the organization will sponsor a series of free caregiver’s support groups to help those who are caring for seniors in their own homes. “There are just not enough resources for these caregivers,” says Cliett. This community outreach will allow caregivers to gather four times per year for a free session

The City of Hernando Seniors know that living in Hernando offers real opportunities for aging in place and enjoying a high-quality of life. Hernando is recognized as an “Age-Friendly Livable Community” by AARP, and as such, prepares for the aging population by paying increased attention to the environmental, economic, and social factors that influence the health and well-being of older adults. Age-friendly or livable communities have walkable streets, housing and transportation options, access to key services, and opportunities for residents to participate in community activities.

Bike Share Program Hernando recently launched a free adult bike share program featuring adult tricycles at the Gale Community Center to increase senior mobility and to offer a recreational option for adults. “Our new program will provide seniors and adults a fun opportunity to exercise and socialize. The ‘trikes’ and bikes will also offer an alternative transportation option for Hernando residents and employees instead of using their automobiles,” says Gia Matheny, Director of Commmunity Development for the city. Funding from the National Aging and Disability Transportation Center provided a total of 12 ‘trikes’ and bikes and helmets. To use a bike, contact the Parks and Recreation receptionist at 662-4292688. The Hernando Police Department will offer to check out the bikes between the hours of 4:00p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Saturdays when officers are not on-call.

Classes for Seniors Living healthy comes easy around town. Seniors can find many free classes at the Gale Center like walking groups, speaking series, and a senior community group called Young at Heart. For more information about how to get involved, call the Gale Center at 662-429-2688.
