Chamber of Commerce. With continued growth happening, a strong partnership between city hall and our business community remains a priority.
It’s an exciting time. We gathered to cut the ribbon
on I-269 that runs through DeSoto County just north of Hernando. We can’t emphasize enough the importance of this national artery for connecting north Mississippi to bigger opportunities. Businesses have always enjoyed our location due to the proximity of Memphis International Airport and the distribution network; now, we have direct access to Canada and Mexico. Looking ahead, one of our priorities is the McIngvale Realignment Road project. With this development, we will add an exit behind the school that allows access to I-269. We hired engineers in 2018 and have made a lot of progress.
The Hernando Farmers Market continues to shine.
We received news that our market was awarded a $200,000 grant to help expand our reach and encourage even more local farmers and producers to engage in this vibrant microeconomy happening right on our square. On another front, we are proud of the small businesses that have opened doors in our community and are dedicated to helping them succeed.
I grew up in Hernando and there’s no place I’d rather
be to live and work. From the schools to the parks, I always see a familiar face which reminds me of all the reasons I call this place home.

Today, Conger Park is widely known as Hernando’s largest park and
features three pavilions, restrooms, two tennis courts, and a pair of walking trails. Much of its development is credited to members of the Maddox Foundation.
“In 2001, Robin Hurdle with the Maddox Foundation saw a project that
Leathers & Associates did in Nashville and figured something similar could happen in Hernando,” said Williams. “Leathers & Associates played a part as far as offering guidance and leadership for the project, but the community had the biggest hand in its development.”
Nearly 20 years later, most of the original structures at Conger Park
retained their integrity, albeit slightly faded and chipped in some areas. However, typical playgrounds are built to last about 15 years and require regular maintenance.

was a time when children with disabilities would be separated from other children during playtime. Now, just like how school classrooms are inclusive, the goal is to allow children to experience things together. That’s huge.”
Williams, who has been Director of Parks and
Recreation with the City of Hernando since 2006, is well aware of the importance of public parks to the community.
“We know that parks in general are capable of
raising the property value within a one-mile radius of a park,” Williams said. “While property value is important, parks are places where families can come together and enjoy each other’s company. Parks also promote places of free, unstructured play.”
Conger Park is one of 10 parks in Hernando that
range from specialized places of play like the skateboarder’s paradise known as Pidgeon Park, to all-purpose areas like Bouchillon Park off Green T Boulevard. In addition, Renasant Park, which is located just south of Conger Park across the highway from Tegra Medical, features the city’s only dog park.

“We saw several former library employees and trustees from 20, 30, even
40 years ago that showed up at this event for him,” said Brown. “He’s a great guy and a fantastic librarian who not only made our library system what it is, but many libraries across the state of Mississippi.”
Brown credits current director Meredith Wickham for initiating the
name rebranding process by seeking permission from the DeSoto County Board of Supervisors and Mayor Tom Ferguson.
“This was kind of her brainchild, but we’ve also been in the process of
a larger initiative to rebrand all of our library branches with new signage,” said Brown. “We’ve done it in Southaven, Hernando was our second, and we just recently finished doing the same out in Olive Branch. But in this case, we just wanted to do something very positive for both the library and community, and also find a way to honor Mr. Anderson and his many years of service.”

future of the James F. “In 2019, the City of Hernando
officially increased funding to library, which means more programs and upgrades to existing the computers used so frequently by the public,” said Brown. “We’re very grateful to the city for increasing our budget in an effort to make the James F. Anderson Library even better than it was before.”

Hernando High School’s band programs involve 150 high school students
and 350 middle school students and are comprised of indoor percussion, color guard, winter guard and three concert bands in addition to middle school bands that also participate.
“There’s a place for everyone in our program,” said Jones. “We’re fortunate
that we teach such a diverse group of students that all gets to come and participate and grow together as they’re all part of a team for the longhaul, sometimes as long as seven years.”
The marching band’s big win follows a successful fall that saw the
school’s marching band engage in competition at the Bands of America St. Louis Super Regional for the first time, coming in fourth in their classification out of 25 competing bands.
Upcoming spring 2020 band events include varsity and junior winter
guard competitions, with the varsity group proceeding to the WGI World Championships in Dayton Ohio in April. The indoor percussion line will also compete at a state level in April, and the jazz band and three concert bands will attend festivals in the spring. Finally, the school year will cap off with a marching band trip to Orlando to participate in the Universal Studios Parade.
“I think that all of the arts programs are so important because they teach
students so much more than just music,” said Jones. “At the end of the day, it’s about important life skills like how to be a part of a larger organization, taking direction and working with teammates from all different backgrounds and styles.”
2019 was also a banner year for Hernando High School Theatre as they
finished the fall season with their rendition of the Mel Brooks’ classic “Young Frankenstein” and are preparing to compete in the Northwest Mississippi Theatre Alliance`s Allie Awards in early 2020.
“Students will be judged in a number of different categories for awards,”
said Lauren Suddoth, Head of Theatre at Hernando High School. “They have awards for specific cast members, as well as honors for entire class and the production side of things such as best lighting, best vocal direction and best choreography.”
Hernando High School Theatre will also participate in The Orpheum High
School Musical Theatre Awards in May, vying for awards in several categories. In January of 2020, Hernando High School Theatre will travel to the Mississippi Theatre Association’s Statewide Festival in Oxford for individual students to compete in a range of categories including best solo musical number, best duet and best monologue performance.
“We generally have about 40 to 45 kids involved in each production
and we’ve done four productions a year in the past,” said Suddoth. “But this year, we chose to scale our productions back to two so the students could focus on perfecting their individual acts for the state festival.”
Hernando High School Theatre is currently gearing up for their spring
musical, a production of Disney’s “Freak Friday” set to debut the last weekend of April to wrap up the season. Alumni from Hernando High School Theatre have gone on to perform abroad, including multiple recipients of National High School Musical Theatre Awards.

“It’s been a good journey,” said
Saunders. “The church has gone through several seasons and we’re in a very good period right now in terms of connecting with the community and reaching out.”
Colonial Hills Church-Hernando
is the culmination of a $5 million investment from church leaders and sits comfortably on 11 acres across the street from Lee’s Summit Park. The church purchased the land for around $750,000 in 2013 and invested nearly $4.4 million in construction, fixtures, furnishings and equipment. The building was designed by Memphis architects Allen & Hoshall as their first church project.
With an eye for community
outreach and emphasis on safety and early childhood education, one of Saunders biggest goals with Colonial Hills Church-Hernando was to create a predictable environment for children to learn about faith in the best possible way.
“You have 936 weeks from the
time a child is born until they go off to college,” said Saunders. “They go by quickly. Before you know it, they’re five years old and you’ve lost 25% of some very valuable time.”
For Saunders, a father of two, the
creation of a spacious, secure children’s area was one of the congregation’s most important tasks.

education in the context of security, so a sense of safety is very important,” said Saunders. “If a child feels like they are at risk in any way, they begin to lose that retention of valuable information.”
In addition to a Maglock-secured
children’s area, Colonial Hills Church aims to help parents throughout every stage of a child’s life when it comes to early childhood development and approaching matters of faith.
“We have built a great strategy
that I think accounts for each unique phase in the life of a child and how to best minister to them at each stage of life,” said Saunders. “Every phase is a little different: a preschooler might need to hear about God one way, whereas it’s a totally different world for that same individual in high school.”
Colonial Hills Church hosts two
large-scale community events every year: the Easter Egg Drop and the Colonial Hills Fall Fest. The former draws in thousands of children and young-at-hearts for a spectacular scattering of colored eggs dropped from a helicopter or hot air balloon, while the latter is a fun-filled October event featuring face painting, inflatables and a rock climbing wall.
“We try to create an incredible,
memorable event every year that is kind of a tangible way to show our community we love them,” said Saunders. “A lot of times you might hear an organization talking about how much they love a community, but we really wanted to show it through our sizable investment in both the Fall Fest and the Egg Drop.”

Developing a new business
in 2019 was also on the mind of Mary Catherine Logan, owner of Saint Boutique, a clothing store located at 2420 E. Parkway across from Kroger that opened its doors in October of 2016.
“I was really looking for a nice,
personal boutique experience,” Logan said. “I realized after we opened that we had such a nice response to the clothing store and I’d always had people tell me the wished we had more home décor options in the area.”
Three years later, Logan saw
the perfect opportunity to expand on her existing brand in the form of Social X Saint (pronounced Social by Saint), an eclectic lifestyle boutique that opened in October of 2019.
“We have so much real estate
down here, it was unbelievable that we didn’t have a dedicated home store in this style,” Logan said. “So we really wanted to kind of capture that element of the market and that’s how we ended up with Social X Saint. Now we’ve really got two very great locations on our hands here in Hernando.”
Social X Saint specialized in sit-
around décor, with a selection of couches, swivel gliders, cheese boards and wine glasses. Freezable wine glasses and a stock of cakes from Sugaree’s Bakery in New Albany proved to be popular sale items this past holiday season.
“I always tell people that if I had
a million of ‘em, I would probably sell a million of ‘em,” Logan said. “I always tell people you can come in and walk out with a coffee cup or a couch. We really tried to cover all the angles that weren’t covered in terms of home décor here in Hernando.”

DeSoto County might have a new
must-visit brunch spot in Bazar’s Bakery & Breakfast, a restaurant that opened its doors in May of 2019 near the Commerce Depot area adjacent the railroad tracks.
“The reception has been very
good since we’ve opened,” said Brenda Love, owner of Bazar’s Bakery & Breakfast. “We serve mimosas, which is something everybody has been asking for lately.”
Bazar’s Bakery serves lunch and
breakfast seven days a week, from 8 to 2 p.m., with a range of menu items best described as unique fare fitting of the namesake. Popular breakfast items include the gravy flight, a three-part sampling of the best in Southern gravy that includes portions of sausage, tomato and chocolate varieties. Specials like a classic hamburger and a chicken salad sandwich round out the lunch menu, though Love said customers are free to order from the whole menu round the clock.

“We serve mainly breakfast food,
but we have some great sandwiches to offer as well,” Love said. “I think you’re just as likely to see a customer order a burger at 8 a.m. or waffles at 1 p.m. some days. Our bakery is open till 5 p.m. daily and we have a wonderful pastry chef who puts together some absolutely amazing petit fours.”
Bazar’s Bakery & Breakfast takes
custom confection orders for birthday parties, retirements and other celebrations. In addition, the restaurant has space in the back to host events.
“Hopefully we’re going to start
opening on Saturday nights as king of a date night spot with special dishes like pasta plates, hot tamales and things like that,” Love said.

participating chefs at this past year’s event, were tasked with creating flavorful and creative dishes centered around unexpected combinations of texture and color.

“My assignment for the most
recent Farm-to-Table Dinner was to prepare the salad, which wasn’t too complicated,” Woods said. “It was a grilled peach salad with curry toasted pecans and honey, topped with a balsamic vinaigrette and feta cheese. It got a lot of good compliments and I feel like it was a great hit.”
Woods gave credit to the
Hernando Farmers Market for providing the bountiful variety behind his wellreceived dish.
“We have a lot of good folks
down there who show up every week with fresh meat and veggies and other good products, it’s a great asset for a project like this.” Woods said.
Hernando Community
Development Director and Farm-toTable Dinner volunteer Gia Matheny acknowledged the importance of a thriving local farmers market and active relationships with vendors in planning the event.
“It’s a great event that raises a
little awareness for the Hernando Farmers Market, which has grown so much over the years,” Matheny said. “In the last six years, the amount of participating vendors has grown by nearly double what it was. Our main focus is locally produced agriculture product, and that’s a necessity for a community like Hernando.”

“We spoke with Robert Long from the museum, and after giving him
the pitch for the whole event, he came up with the idea of offering Carriage rides around The Square,” said Matheny.
The Desoto County Museum provided a horse-drawn carriage, with curator
Robert Long acting as coachman and outfitted in his 18th-century best.
“We originally planned to do the carriage rides from 1 to 3 p.m., but it was
so popular that Rob stuck around until the sun went down giving his very unique tours,” said Matheny. “It was wonderful and I think the museum got a lot of exposure as a result.”
A towering Christmas tree near the clock tower, which served as a
centerpiece for the event, was donated from Hernando United Methodist Church to the Hernando Chamber of Commerce.
One of the primary goals of the Dickens of a Christmas event was to
incorporate different community organizations to build awareness and attract additional visitors to Downtown Hernando. This was accomplished through the work of numerous community partners doing what they do best. These partnerships include organizations like The DeSoto Arts Council, which displayed unique, handcrafted works of art at their building near the clock tower.
Vendors from the Hernando Farmers Market also got in on the fun with
special Christmas-themed booths and numerous holiday wares for sale. DeSoto Family Theater, Northwest Mississippi Community College and Ballet DeSoto all provided actors and dancers to perform and interact with visitors, while professional storyteller Rebecca Moore Jernigan regaled eager onlookers with tales of Christmases long, long ago thanks to a grant from the Mississippi Humanities Council.
“Dr. Jernigan was fantastic, she has a background in theater and was able
to act out some of the parts, which I think added a lot to the story,” said Matheny.
Old Saint Nick himself also made an appearance, as children were able to
convene with Santa Claus in the courthouse, craft a Christmas ornament, decorate

cookies and received a free children’s book from Excel By 5. The Hernando Animal Shelter also hosted a display featuring pet photos with Santa.
In addition to a slew of festive
activities and decorations at Hernando’s Historic Square, the rest of the city shined more brilliantly than in years past in more ways than one.
“Through two grants that the city
received – one from Wal-Mart and one from Entergy – we were able to increase the number of Christmas lights for our city,” said Matheny, “2019 marked the second consecutive year that Wal-Mart has donated seed money for holiday decorations around town. In 2018, Wal-Mart pledged seed money to start a landscaping project and add Christmas lights to our welcome sign.”
The grant from Entergy paid for
the thousands of lights that illuminated the downtown area.
“We wanted to have some lights on
the opposite side of the interstate, as well, so when visitors and residents exited the interstate, the display would be one of the first things they see,” said Matheny.
Other improvements to the area
include light-up wreaths for eight of the light poles around the downtown area, the money for which was raised by the Hernando Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber was able to raise money for half of the city’s 16 historic poles and worked alongside Whitfield Electric to provide electricity to the wreaths, in addition to putting up the tree.
Other community partners for this
event included the City of Hernando, DeSoto Board of Supervisors, DeSoto County Sheriff’s Department, Hernando Civic Garden Club, Hernando Lions Club and many more.
