SUMMERHOUSE RESIDENT SPOTLIGHT: TOM & ALYSON GILL Summerhouse Marketing Director, Carrie Ray Davis, interviews a couple who love the beach—and their Summerhouse home!

n an unseasonably warm North Carolina winter morning, Tom and Alyson Gill invited me into their lovely home to talk about their life, their experiences, and how they came to be a part of the Summerhouse community. As we sat in the living room, you could feel the warmth of their smiles, and even though I would be the one interviewing them, they were the ones who made me feel comfortable as if we had been long lost friends sharing a laugh after a chance reunion. Tom and Alyson met in Statesville, NC, and were high school sweethearts. Their affection carried over through their college years, and eventually, they married. Tom, a retiree of the United States Air Force, and Alyson, a career teacher, have two daughters and two grandchildren. Both of their daughters share their mother’s passion for teaching and have made their careers as educators. Their oldest daughter is the mother of their two grandchildren, while the youngest daughter was recently wed this past December at nearby Emerald Isle. Tom is currently an author who has published three books and has a fourth novel and a children’s book on the horizon. I asked the couple how they found Summerhouse. Tom had seen the entrance to Summerhouse quite a few times in passing and thought to himself, “that’s a beautiful entrance.” One day he was passing by with his grandchild and decided to look to see what was beyond

“When I walked through the front door, the wow factor of the back porch hit me..” —Tom Gill the beautiful entrance. He visited Summerhouse a few more times after that initial visit and brought his wife to see the community. Once here, Alyson was very pleased with the community. As lifelong beach lovers and already being an owner of a beach house on Emerald Isle, they felt it was a great fit as Summerhouse kept them close to both their family and the beach. Tom and Alyson both love that here at Summerhouse, they can enjoy the tight-knit community along with the beauty of their home. Alyson’s favorite feature of their home is, “the fact that there are not a lot of steps.” Tom describes his favorite part of the home among so many others, “When I walked through the front door, the wow factor of the back porch hit me.” They both agreed that there are so many beautiful aspects of their home, the Lure, built by Logan Homes. With the superb amenities, wonderful neighbors, and great location, they are

happy to call Summerhouse on Everett Bay their home.

I entered the store with notebook in hand, ready to do a simple interview with “niche.” store manager, Chris Gray, and general manager, Julie Crouch, of sister store, Custom Home Furniture Galleries. The three of us found a cozy corner to sit down to connect, and I immediately realized that this was not going to be your typical interview. My pen hit the paper with a few of their comments, and soon I decided to lay it down and just listen. I sat for over an hour and took in their stories of how they give customers an experience when they shop inside. But it’s much more than that. Strawberry Lemonade Cake

Cook Time 45 Minutes Serves 8 people

COOK I NG I NST RUCT IO NS :

Preheat oven to 350˚ and lightly grease a 9x13” cake pan. In a large bowl, stir together oil and sugar until combined. Add strawberry

puree, eggs and vanilla and whisk until combined. Then add ﬂour, baking powder and salt and slowly stir just until moistened.

Spread the batter into your lightly greased prepared cake pan. Bake 40-45 minutes, just until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean or with moist crumbs. Cool before frosting.

In a large bowl, beat butter until smooth with an electric mixer.

Add

the powdered sugar, cream, and lemon zest (the more lemon, the tangier the ﬂavor!) Beat until smooth. Add lemon juice until consistency is smooth and thick enough to spread.
