Goleta beckons travelers in search of quality, quintessentially Californian experiences and an easy-going vibe. Home to the stunning oceanfront University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) campus, numerous innovative technology companies and a population of 32,000 full-time residents, “The Good Land” is beloved for its scenic stretch of undeveloped coastline, organic farms and A-list golf courses. Visitors can tap into the impressive concentration of craft beer producers, savor the robust restaurant scene and check into easy-on-the wallet hotels—or splurge on an award-winning luxury resort.

Nestled between the Santa Ynez Mountains and the Pacific Ocean along the Pacific Coast Highway, Goleta is surrounded by wide open spaces with the Channel Islands National Park offshore and Santa Barbara Wine Country a short drive away. Goleta also serves as the gateway to the Santa Barbara South Coast for air passengers flying into the Santa Barbara Airport.

STEP BACK IN TIME

The Chumash were Goleta’s original inhabitants who thrived on the area’s natural abundance for thousands of years. In the early 19th and 20th centuries, the Goleta Valley became a prominent lemon growing area and agricultural center. In the 1920s, aviation pioneers made use of the Goleta Slough for take-offs and landings, setting the stage for the area’s future as an ideal airport location, which came to fruition for military use in the 1940s.

The aerospace industry took off after the war and other technology companies also set up shop. Simultaneously, residential construction boomed and in 1954, UCSB relocated to the former Marine Corps. base—the foundational elements Goleta is known for today were firmly planted.

A CITY ON THE RISE

One of the youngest cities in California, Goleta was officially incorporated in 2002. Goleta has long been a center of creativity and innovation, between the university, high tech companies and entrepreneurial start-ups rooted locally. Over the past two decades, Goleta’s hospitality scene has evolved significantly, enabling the city to become a sought-after destination in its own right.

In 2000, the area’s first luxury resort opened on a particularly majestic stretch of Goleta’s northern coast. That property is now operating under the banner of The Ritz-Carlton Bacara, Santa Barbara. More recently, an influx of new hotels further diversified the lodging inventory, including stylish boutique hotels and major global chains.

Whether visitors are coming to do business, visit students at UCSB or vacation in the region, everything you need will be right at your fingertips.

COLLEGIATE CRED

The University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) is considered one of the country’s most beautiful college campuses thanks to its prime oceanfront location and the compact Isla Vista neighborhood where many students live. The academics are equally A-grade. Campus life spills out into Goleta and the university enriches the local economy in addition to providing incredible cultural opportunities and spectator sports experiences.

HIGH TECH HUB

Beyond the brilliant minds at UCSB, this unassuming city by the sea is stocked with some serious brain power. Large, successful aerospace, medical and information technology and manufacturing enterprises have a major presence in Goleta, including global brands such as Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, Redwire, Northrup Grumman and Teledyne FLIR.

THE GREAT OUTDOORS

CHOOSE YOUR ADVENTURE—FRESH AIR FUN IS ALWAYS ON TAP IN GOLETA.

HIT THE BEACH

Goleta is a beach town at heart. The namesake Goleta Beach Park abuts UCSB and draws sunbathers and groups for barbecues and picnics. Kayak and standup paddle board rentals are available seasonally and the 1,500-foot-long Goleta Pier is popular for fishing. Campus Point sits on the tip of the UCSB campus and is the spot for surfing, especially during winter swells.

Frequented by surfers, windsurfers, kiteboarders and seaglass collectors, Sands Beach can be reached from a bluff path at the southern end of Camino Majorca Road. At low tide, you can walk all the way to Haskell’s Beach, which is also accessible from a public access trail at The Ritz-Carlton Bacara resort. Haskell’s offers a wide expanse that’s perfect for tide pooling and sunset strolling.

Heading farther up the coast, a trio of state beaches along the undeveloped Gaviota Coast are worth the drive for their sense of serenity and natural beauty. El Capitán offers trails for nature walks down to the rocky shore. Refugio feels like a tropical oasis with its palm-lined crescent and mellow surf break—it’s also wellsuited to paddle boarding and kayaking. Gaviota has a cool vantage of a train trestle, plus hiking trail access.

SIP AND SAVOR

GOLETA GROWN

Agriculture is a key ingredient of the Goleta lifestyle thanks to the Mediterranean climate and fertile soil. Urban farms and specialty growers harvest seasonal produce yearround. Visitors can drop by farmstands and the weekly Sunday farmers’ market to check out what’s in season.

FARM FRESH

Established in 1868, Lane Farms remains a family-run farm with an ever-changing produce stand. Come Halloween season, Lane Farms is the place to go for pumpkins, a large corn maze and tons of fun seasonal photo ops.

Good Land Organics is renowned for their subtropical fruits such as caviar limes, cherimoya and passionfruit. Good Land

Organics also grows, mills and roasts coffee beans sold under the FRINJ brand and was the first to commercially cultivate coffee on the mainland U.S. and in California. Book the “Coffee Experience & Tour” for a behind-the-scenes look at the farm and to learn more about their pioneering agricultural methods.

Every Sunday, the Goleta Farmers’ Market pops up at Camino Real Marketplace, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Stroll through the market to meet the growers and makers and spot local chefs stocking up on ingredients. Growers come from as far as the Central Valley and as close as the Goleta foothills, and the market is open rain or shine.

DACIA HARWOOD DOUG YARTZ

A longtime Goleta resident and local history buff, Dacia moved to the area to attend UCSB in 1993 and never left. She spent 12 years working for the Goleta Valley Historical Society before taking on her current post as Executive Director of the Santa Barbara Historical Museum.

What do you love most about living in Goleta?

Goleta is a perfect combination—it is so family friendly and relaxed, but with the incredible cultural opportunities of a college town. Last year my son, who recently graduated from the (incredible!) Dos Pueblos Engineering Academy, had an internship at Neal Feay, a cutting-edge aluminum manufacturer.

What says “quintessential Goleta” to you?

Attending a free concert at Stow House or a day at the Lemon Festival.

What’s your favorite nature walking spot?

I love to wander through Coal Oil Point to the Ellwood Bluffs. It is truly amazing to have such a beautiful area for the community to enjoy. Plus, I love the fascinating old building, polo barn and cross left from the 1920s-era Campbell Ranch. The buildings that remain were designed by Mary Craig, one of California's most significant female architects.

How would you spend a perfect Goleta day?

Brunch at CAYA in The Leta Hotel, the farmers’ market at Camino Real Marketplace and a sunset picnic overlooking the ocean at Coal Oil Point.

What are your top three go-to restaurants/bars/eateries?

Our favorite family dinners are spent at Goleta Sushi. Once a week, we get a to-go dinner from Pollofino, which has the best chicken anywhere. A nightcap is best at The Imperial in Old Town Goleta for excellent cocktails and a cool modern tiki vibe.

What cultural event(s) or festival do you most look forward to every year?

That is a toss-up! I love the World of Pinot Noir at the Bacara. I also love Fiesta Ranchera at Stow House. This year, I am particularly excited because my son Jack, an accomplished flamenco dancer, will perform as “Spirit of Fiesta.”

Born and raised in Goleta, Doug Yartz opened Surf Country in 1999 and quickly became the community’s trusted purveyor of all things surf and skate related. He also offers private surf lessons and board rentals.

What do you love most about living and working in Goleta?

The weather, the overall laid-back lifestyle and the fact that everything you need is within less than 10 minutes.

How would you spend a perfect Goleta day?

Surfing at Campus Point with my wife and two sons, taking a nap and enjoying an early dinner.

What are your top three go-to restaurants?

Domingos for breakfast, Pepe Delgados for Mexican food, Goleta Sushi House and Chuck’s of Hawaii for date night with my wife.

What’s your favorite walking/hiking/biking spot?

The bike path from Turnpike to Goleta Beach and the More Mesa hike to the ocean.

What cultural event(s) or festival do you most look forward to every year?

Goleta Old Town Holiday Parade.

What says “quintessential Goleta” to you? Spending a Sunday afternoon at the beach.

Name your go-to local libation: A Mai Tai at The Imperial.

Any other favorite local spots?

Refugio State Beach for a day trip or camping.

LOCALS’ LENS

Josh Ellis is an awardwinning brewer and co-owner of M. Special Brewing Co. He moved to the area to attend UCSB in 1994 and has been living and working in the Santa Barbara area ever since.

What do you love most about living and working in Goleta?

The people, the community and the surf.

What says “quintessential Goleta” to you? Great people who work hard and play hard.

How would you spend a perfect Goleta day?

I would stop at the M. Special taproom, fill a growler of M. Special lager and head to Goleta Beach to enjoy the weather.

What are your go-to eateries?

For rainy days, Noodle City in Old Town is my spot. For authentic, casual dining, I go to Jerry’s Pollofino. For authentic ramen, I go to Nikka Ramen on Calle Real.

What’s your favorite nature walking spot? Coronado Butterfly Preserve.

What cultural event(s) or festival do you most look forward to every year?

Old Town Night Market and the Lemon Festival—M. Special makes a special custom beer for the festival every year.

Name your go-to local beverage:

Beyond beer, I do enjoy an Old Fashioned from time to time at The Imperial.

How/where do you recharge locally? In the ocean.

ERIN CAIRD

Erin Caird is a Santa Barbara native who has always lived and worked in Goleta. She is owner and Sales & Marketing Director of Por La Mar Nursery, a multi-generational business her parents started more than 50 years ago.

How would you spend a perfect Goleta day?

My idea of a perfect Goleta day is surfing if there is a swell. I love to surf, and the Goleta area has so many great breaks to choose from and they aren’t as crowded as going south can be.

What do you love most about living and working in Goleta?

As a child, we could ride our ponies, skateboard and bike to just about anywhere. Goleta still has that old town feel, which might seem dated to some, but to me it’s what our town has always been. It’s a hidden gem. We can still ride our horses, skateboard and bike to just about anywhere!

What are your go-to restaurants?

Cajun Kitchen for breakfast, Hacienda for lunch, On the Alley for a quick bite of fresh seafood and Jane for dinner.

What are your favorite hiking and walking spots?

At low tide, I like to walk from northern Goleta to Santa Barbara. And Las Cruces trail is my favorite for hiking.

What cultural event(s) or festival do you most look forward to every year?

Concerts in the Park at Stow House—the music is free, you bring your own food or buy food and socialize and dance! I also enjoy the summer concerts at El Capitan Canyon. And the Goleta Old Town Holiday Parade is super cute and fun to attend.

What says “quintessential Goleta” to you?

Old Town, Santa Cruz Markets, Goleta Sushi and Timbers Restaurant. Where do you recharge locally?

Centennial Beer Hall is a great brewery with live music and food trucks. Any other local business shout outs?

Shoutout to my daughter-in-law, Hunter Chancellor Williams, for opening Cyclebar in Magnolia Center, which is set to open in fall 2023. I couldn’t be prouder and know it’s going to be a huge success—it’s the first cycling studio to ever come to Goleta.

Every fall, Goleta’s signature event takes over Girsh Park for a weekend. The festival celebrates Goleta’s heritage as a preeminent lemon-growing region, honoring the first commercial planting of lemon trees in California in 1875. Savor citrusy treats like lemon meringue pie. Sip locally brewed beer and lemon ale. Enjoy live music performances. Check out the annual Goleta Fall Classic Car show. Shop local vendors. And let the kids get into fun and games in the dedicated Kids Zone and the ever-popular Safety Street.
