LOCAL LEGEND
Rumor has it, the first public boat launch ramp constructed in Channel Islands Harbor (opened 1960) was created in the rebellious spirit of its time.
“In 1963, a group of locals pooled their resources and built one in the middle of the night at low tide while everyone was sleeping, without approval from any governing bodies,” says Steve Buenger, Visit Oxnard chairman. “My grandmother brought them food to keep ’em going through the night.”
Apparently, Ventura County was surprised to find out what had happened, but officials looked the other way until they were able to construct the first officially sanctioned boat launch ramp a few years later. What a rebel move!
