HAPPY BIRTHDAY editor's LETTER

toUs!

At Destination I Do, we love to celebrate. We love to celebrate romance (eh hem, why else would we have this magazine?!), we love to celebrate milestones and we love to celebrate anniversaries. This issue is special because we’re celebrating ten years on the newsstand! We’ve come a long way from our first issue and we’ve experienced quite a journey. From watching destination weddings transform from Vegas drive-through elopements (thanks Vegas for being the pioneer of destination weddings!) to elaborate weddings away in castles, private tropical villas, wineries and even rustic mountain destinations, it’s been an exciting ride to see what couples are doing and how unique and personal these celebrations have become. We’ve grown as a product over time as well. We’ve had tremendous help from the amazing wedding community with experts weighing-in every issue and stunning photo shoots in the most amazing destinations and collaborated on by some

Bali (pg. 56) and all the destinations in between, we have the important job of vetting all these places to make sure they are fit for a wedding or honeymoon away. Rest assured, we take our work very seriously.

There are several articles with the theme of “ten” to help us commemorate our milestone. We have ten ideas on how to celebrate your first anniversary with flair (pg. 68), ten bouquets that will fit any destination or style (pg. 32), and our top ten etiquette questions for destination weddings (pg. 36). With every page turn, I hope you find this magazine helpful and full of inspiration. With this many years under our belt, we should have it pretty buttoned up. But, if you think there is something missing or some area we should feature, my door (or email inbox) is open for feedback. The only way we will continue to grow is to continue to listen to the needs of the people reading, contributing to and advertising in this magazine. Thank you for the past ten years, and for many more decades ahead.

1. Bring documentation certifying ownership…this could be a photo of the sales receipt, authenticity certification, appraisal details or insurance details. 2. Only bring those pieces you feel you

must bring and list them in a document. 3. Take pictures of each piece of jewelry you pack – this could come in handy for insurance purposes. 4. Make sure you have a place to store your ring should you take it off. Whenever your ring is not on your finger, it should be stored here. 5. No matter your honeymoon

destination, your ring will get dirty. Soak your ring in cleaner to keep it sparkling and safe from nicks or tarnish. 6. Your ring probably won’t be adequately covered under your homeowners policy. Talk to an insurance professional to make sure you have the right coverage for your valuables. 7. When you are not wearing your engagement ring, leave it in the hotel's secured vault…only leave semi-valuables in the in-room safe. 8. Never take your jewelry off when going through security. It gives any stranger way too much time to swoop it up. 9. When you are out and about, turn your ring inside your palm, so the diamond/ gemstone is not visible. Out of sight, out of mind. 10. You are probably on cloud nine, so be sure that confident spirit is shown.

IDEAL HAIR & MAKEUP LOOKS TO COMPLEMENT YOUR GOWN Words by Courtney Cox & TEAM Hair and Makeup

Picking out your dream wedding dress is an emotional and pivotal process. Once you’ve found “the one,” it’s important to make sure your W-Day hair and makeup not only reflect your personal style, but coincide with the overall feel of your dress. The amazing folks over at TEAM Hair and Makeup (teamhairandmakeupservice.com) have put together some of their favorite beauty looks and their suggestions for which dress style pairs best. style with this soft and toned-down version of the Hollywood glam, or what we like to call the "Jessica Rabbit." Loose and billowy waves with our TEAM Hair Extensions, added for fullness, are perfect for a glitzy gown. Remember, never let the dress wear you. MAKEUP: Go naked! Well...almost! The makeup here needs to be defined, yet not distracting. The perfect look for an embellished dress is to go natural with the foundation and highlighting, however, add a little drama with winged liner and contouring on the cheeks with a hint of pink for some color. Pouty, nude lips are always a hit with this look.

Updated Elegance

away from the face and form a "crown-like” frame around the face. Place in TEAM Hair Extensions for fullness and length. The look is stunning and striking with a hint of tradition. Giving a little volume on the crown and tighter around the sides of the style will ensure a breathtaking look. MAKEUP: A little pop of color is all a girl needs! Afraid of red lipstick? Try a berry tone! The deeper the lip shade, the more flawless your skin will look! Keep the application simple, although a must-have is flawless skin. Use a BB cream under the foundation for a dewy finish and use a crème blush for a flushed appearance which will enhance the berry lip.

Traditional

3. DRESS: High-neck, modern styles & off-the-shoulder necklines HAIR: For a more traditional and conservative look, you can't go

wrong with a low chignon. By keeping a little volume on the top and more taught on the sides, there is still a sense of glamour, sans the “over-done" look. MAKEUP: A red lip will always look timeless with soft, neutral makeup everywhere else. The skin must be prepped properly using a BB cream. Then, by using an HD or water based foundation over it, you will create a soft-skin look which will last all evening long. A red lip, blue-red for a brunette and an orangered for a blonde, pairs perfectly with this sleek, yet elegant do.

Natural Beauty

4. DRESS: Understated or simple, traditional style HAIR: The hair should be pulled back in a soft, yet textured low

bun. Keeping a little volume on the crown of the head will give an elegant and stunning look walking down the aisle. MAKEUP: Like our mothers always said, "less is more" and this is certainly true with this look! Using peaches and soft browns on the eyes and lips will give the illusion of a sun kissed complexion.

style. With just a slight wave and a side part, this hairstyle is perfect for a timeless look. MAKEUP: Lips and cheeks are the main focus with this look. With a deep berry stain and a rosy blush, go light on the foundation and eyes for a fresh-faced look! Individual lashes are recommended.

classic. Using our TEAM Bridal Extensions, this style gives the illusion of fullness while maintaining a natural look to the hair. As a bonus, it's stunning from all angles. MAKEUP: Enhancing? Yes! Brows and eyes are the stars of this application. The arch in the brow is well defined and perfectly frames the face. With a wash of crème shimmer on the lid and a little nude crease, this makes for a beautifully done natural eye. By adding a fine line of liner then a row of lashes, this will ensure definition rather than that "too much" sort of look. Modern and chic is the goal here.

OCEANFRONT OPTIONS

Seaside nuptials are the number one destination wedding option for a reason. However, getting married in any of these oceanfront options doesn’t mean you have to opt for a traditional, “beachy” wedding. Each of these five destinations has plenty to offer in the way of beauty and each caters to a different type of wedding. Opt for American tradition in Cape Cod, adventure in Costa Rica, maritime fun in San Diego, seclusion in Lāna`i or a blend of excitement and relaxation in Maui. Easy RIVIERA MAYA MADE

Words by Susan Moynihan

So, what’s an engaged couple to do? Read between the lines, or better yet, read this, the first in a series on all-inclusives in popular wedding locales. For our inaugural edition, we’re focusing on Riviera Maya, Mexico. The area between Cancun and Playa del Carmen is lined with resorts in all range of budgets and styles. Here are seven we recommend, each for entirely different reasons.

62

All-inclusive resorts are great for weddings, but it can be tough to find the right one. After all, there are a lot of similarities: most offer various settings and packages at different budgets, unlimited food and activities, and they all make claim to luxury surroundings. But, just like “soulmate” means different things to different people, so does the word “luxury.”

the HONEYMOONIST 2

1. Kid-Friendly Cool: AZUL BEACH

OVERVIEW: Engaged couples with small kids face a unique quandary: How do you find a resort that's romantic enough to say “wedding,” but also welcomes younger kids? Enter Azul Beach. From the outside, this looks like a romantic boutique hotel, with 148 rooms set in white, Mediterranean-style buildings and thatched-roof tiki huts lining the beach. But take a closer look and you’ll see kids – happy kids, and equally relaxed parents. Any parent knows how stressful it is to travel with little ones, so Azul Beach formed a unique partnership that lets them fully stock rooms with all of the extras you need, from cribs to changing tables and diapers, even toys via a partnership with Fisher Price. The comprehensive kids club allows little ones from six months to 12 years old, with activities from piñata making to movie night. EXTRAS: The five restaurants are all child-friendly to varying degrees, with special kids menus. When you need some adultonly time, head to the sexy tequila bar, with 30 labels for tasting and an 18-or-over policy. Speaking of adult, kid-free friends will be equally happy in their sexy Jacuzzi swim-up suite and hitting the on-site spa. VENUES: Take full advantage of the setting with a ceremony on Sky Rooftop Terrace which overlooks the beach from four stories up. Décor packages come in six different styles. 2. Boutique Chic: VICEROY RIVIERA MAYA

OVERVIEW: This luxury resort just north of Playa del Carmen is one of Mexico’s best-kept secrets, with 41 villas tucked in a stretch of jungle by the sea. At check-in you’re given a Mayan blessing to shake off the stresses of the outside world and it works: the place feels unlike anywhere else. Standalone bungalows are connected via winding jungle paths. Each has a cushy king bed, large patio with private plunge pool, hammock and chaise lounges; inside, the expansive bathroom has a soaking tub and rainforest shower, as well as a large garden 1

LAKE TAHOE

Maureen + David Words by Kate Darnell

Images by Catherine Hall Studios, catherinehall.net

“Quality time” was of paramount importance to Maureen and David when deciding on whether or not to have a destination wedding. “We wanted to have more than just the day of the wedding to enjoy having all our friends and family in one spot,” says Maureen. Lake Tahoe was an obvious choice as they had vacationed there for years and it required little travel time. “It’s the perfect distance away from the Bay Area, where most of our guests would be coming from…far enough away to definitely stay overnight and feel ‘away,’ but not far enough to have to fly.”

Love. Capturing Life. Creating Lau ghter.

Celebrating

See what happens when girls fall in love with books. In the developing world, a girl doesn’t have a lot of options. She often has to drop out of school to work or marry young due to societal pressures. But an education can change that. The longer girls stay in school, the more likely they are to earn higher wages, marry later in life, have healthier families and educate their own children. Room to Read has helped thousands of girls gain the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in school and beyond. Honor the power of education on your wedding day with a gift P H O T O G R A P H Y that changes lives. Celebrate generously by visiting roomtoread.org.

These two had a very specific “peaches and cream” vision in mind and were able to execute it to perfection with the help of their wedding planner.

On a chilly afternoon in Paris, Erika had the surprise of a lifetime in store for her. In town to continue her education, her love, Karim, had arranged a special birthday surprise, all the way from the U.S. – or so Erika thought. “I arrived in Montmartre…and Karim popped out of the crowd, got down on one knee and proposed! It was one of the most romantic and memorable moments that we’ll forever share.” As a second surprise, Karim had arranged for Erika’s friend, who is a photographer, to be on-site and capture the entire scene.

With Jena and Yves’ gorgeous Big Sur destination wedding, these two proved that love really does conquer all. Come W-Day, the groom, unfortunately, was seriously under the weather with the stomach flu. “I wanted to get to Yves, ASAP,” says the bride. “He had to go to the hospital and get pumped with IV fluids and a plethora of you-name-its! So the ceremony was a relief, to say the least. He was there and he looked dashing as per usual!” The couple was thrilled to share their coastal destination with 85 guests. “[Big Sur] consists of mountains surrounded by redwoods and wildflowers perched on cliffs overlooking the ocean…can it get any better? It was perfect for our tastes and personalities.” Overall, Yves and Jena describe planning a destination wedding as “easier than people may think,” even though these two accomplished it all the way from Hong Kong!

These lovebirds embraced the majesty of their surroundings and created a romantic, one-of-a-kind ceremony and reception. According to the couple, one of the best decisions they made was including their guests’ children in the festivities. “The kids at our wedding tore up the dance floor, it was hilarious,” says Jena. “We had many activities other than dancing, mostly eating and drinking, but darts, a bouncy house, ring toss and a bonfire, too. We aren’t really dancers, so having other things to do was great!” When asked her favorite memory from the day, Jena describes the overall success of the event. “[Big Sur] is stamped in our hearts and memories…just seeing all the hard work come together with all the love from the most important people in our lives…” As for advice for other couples, Jena prescribes caution: “Don’t get the stomach flu! If you or anyone you are close to has had the flu…stay away!”
