“Grounded” EDITOR'S LETTER

THE PERKS OF BEING

ach issue, I travel a fair amount to ensure the properties and destinations we include in the pages of our magazine are ideal for your wedding away or honeymoon trip-of-a-lifetime. Truth be told, all our writers and editors check out each of the properties firsthand. Our goal isn’t to jet-set off into the sunset and take advantage of five-star accommodations around the world (although that’s a huge bonus). It is to make sure we’re asking the right questions with YOU in mind. This issue, I was “grounded” for much of it – I’ve got baby #2 on the way, so my traveling days came to a screeching halt. At first, it felt a little foreign…seeing editorial pitches come in for places I’d been dying to go, and probably would have, if it weren’t for my “delicate” condition. Then I realized this was a true opportunity for me to jump into the driver's seat of the destination couple.

EDITOR'S LETTER

There are questions you should be asking potential venues or properties, questions that I am able to ask in person, when I’m on property with the wedding coordinator or general manager. These questions could save you headache, time and even money. For example, we got an editorial pitch for a place that, although the website made it look amazing and the writer (who really wanted to get the assignment) said was fabulous, begged a little more investigating. It was a considerable drive from any major airport and seemed a little too “off-the-beaten-path.” For a honeymoon, this could work, but for a destination wedding? I wasn’t so sure. When I put myself in the proverbial shoes of a bride, there were a few “red flags” that came up for me (and should for you). First of all, it’s great this wasn’t a super touristy place, but was the infrastructure something that would allow for an easy destination wedding? Were there adequate hotel options for guests to stay? How about local wedding resources such as good florists, rental companies or tour operators? Would it make sense to drive an additional few hours from a major airport after guests already had traveled so far? The answer to these questions may have all been “yes.” In that case, great, slam dunk – it’s worthy of our attention as a magazine and yours as a couple. But if one answer is "no," how much extra effort would it take to pull off a wedding there? These are all questions we investigate before heading out the door with our own passports in hand – and they should be the same questions you have before you pick your place to say “I do.”

10

When it comes to your honeymoon, “off-the-beaten-path” is often a welcome vernacular, so it may not be as important to investigate. Know and understand what suits you and make sure the destination and property will deliver. We’ve got lots of amazing (and recently vetted) properties throughout this issue. Each one has been personally visited by a roving reporter listed in our masthead and journalists who know just what questions to ask. Check out our “Drivable Destinations” feature starting on page 28 for places you (and your loved ones) can road trip to. Feeling adventurous and wanting to check out a higher elevation? Our feature on page 52, “Elevation Enchantment” will give you some solid suggestions on where to wed above the clouds. Keep in mind, as you turn the pages of this (and every Destination I Do) issue, we have your big day and honeymoon at the forefront of everything we do. Our goal is to protect your wedding and honeymoon plans as much as we can by recommending places we would go to ourselves. Rest assured, your day will be as special and as wonderful as the love you’re celebrating. No matter where that may be.

Yours Truly, Jennifer Stein

ANGUILLA & ST. BARTHS BATHED IN LUXURY Words by Carolyn Steere

Photo courtesy of: Malliouhana, An Auberge Resort

Island (def.) (noun) A piece of land surrounded by water.

W

hen considering the islands of the Caribbean, the definition is the only thing they have in common. Each possesses its own charm and personality and choosing the picture-perfect fit for your tropical nuptials can make all the difference. We have two favorites to acquaint you with‌the islands of Anguilla and St. Barths. Located in the northeastern Caribbean adjacent to St. Martin, these serene, exotic pieces of heaven have beaches for every mood or whim, culinary scenes that will satisfy the most discriminating palate and stunningly beautiful resorts and villas.

CARIBBEAN

SPRING & SUMMER 2016

21

ANGUILLA When planning your wedding away, if you envision an intimate, tranquil location where you and your guests can take a deep breath and leave your cares behind, you will be delighted with the slow pace enjoyed by residents and visitors of Anguilla in the British West Indies.

As a mid-sized property, smaller weddings are easily accommodated and weddings up to 120 are also doable with a resort buy-out. Most couples choose one of the secluded beaches for their ceremony, but there are many settings with dramatic ocean backdrops you can choose from. Only one wedding per day allows staff to focus on making your wedding dreams a reality.

CARIBBEAN

The newly renovated Malliouhana, with its unique boutique charm, is definitely a location to consider. Upon your arrival, as you receive a warm greeting and refreshing drink, your eyes are

immediately drawn to the panoramic view of the teal blue waters of the Caribbean through the white arches in the lobby. The dÊcor is interesting and eclectic – but artfully blended together with the soft hues of the Caribbean. Most guest rooms have ocean views with super comfy beds and enormous verandas where you can lounge away the hours or take in the sunset. When you are ready to dip your toes in some cool water, you can either head to the two-tiered infinity pool accented by bright yellow umbrellas or to one of three beaches just steps below the resort.

22

destinationido.com

Both take a bit more effort to get to than other Caribbean destinations, which may be why they remain quite exclusive. Many guests arrive through Puerto Rico where Tradewind Aviation provides direct one-hour flights to either island or through St. Martin where you can connect to a ferry or charter flight for the short trip to either island. Regardless, upon your arrival you will be pleased that you made the extra effort.

dessert, you will be in for a culinary delight. The calm, shallow waters outside your door make this the perfect place to enjoy snorkeling, kayaking or learn to kitesurf or paddleboard.

ST. BARTHS In contrast to Anguilla, from the moment you step onto the nearby ultra-chic island of St. Barths, you sense a high-energy vibe. This French paradise may encompass only eight square miles, but it is home to fabulous beaches, designer boutiques and is the Caribbean destination where you are most likely to bump into a celebrity. Here, draw your attention to Le Sereno, a small slice of paradise situated on a picturesque lagoon. The renowned French designer Christian Liaigre’s influence is seen in the exquisite minimalist décor of the rooms, suites and villas where the focus is on the natural beauty of the setting. Samy Ghachem, the General Manager, is a visible presence throughout the day and into the evening – ensuring every aspect of your experience is flawless. Gourmet meals blending French cuisine and local Caribbean flavors are served in the beachfront open-air restaurant. So, from your morning croissant to your evening

Hosting events are a specialty of Le Sereno and the talented staff delight in planning weddings that are the perfect blend of relaxation, fun and luxury. Le Sereno’s 7,000 square-foot, four-bedroom villas with extraordinary ocean views are perfect for intimate weddings. Larger weddings have multiple on-site options for a ceremony and reception with a resort buy-out. Once discovered, the enchanting islands of Anguilla and St. Barths tend to beckon guests to return for years to come. Take your pick! These two distinct Caribbean jewels offer perfect settings for wedding celebrations, honeymoons, anniversaries or just to make memories that will be treasured for a lifetime.

ANTIGUA BEACH BOUTIQUE

ome beach resorts have a flaw; they’re often set on popular beaches, which means that you share the sand with other guests from neighboring hotels and condos or strolling vendors selling tchotchkes. But, you won’t find that issue at Carlisle Bay on Antigua. First of all, there’s the island itself; Antigua claims to have 365 beaches (“one for every day of the year,” as the popular saying goes), so there are plenty of strands for everyone. Secondly, the resort has a great location, tucked in a cove that’s bookended by bluffs for maximum privacy. This means, chances are you won’t see anyone but fellow resort guests and a few yachts looking for a mellow mooring.

26

The resort takes full advantage of this fact. The 82 suites are set in three-story cottages along a white-sand beach and include chic interiors featuring crisp white-and-aqua hues with sea-facing terraces. Smaller weddings take place on the beach, followed by a four-course private dinner on their postcard-perfect jetty. For something larger, take over the pool deck, which is surrounded by lush foliage for privacy and surprise your guests with a fireworks show; Carlisle Bay can arrange it all. For a honeymoon, we recommend the Ocean Suites; they’re set on the quieter, east end of the beach, while families are grouped on the opposite end.

This is the Caribbean, so of course you’ll find watersports from paddleboarding to snorkeling. But that’s not all. The resort began as a private tennis club, so there are nine courts and an on-site pro to help you with your game. The screening room shows nightly movies (you can also rent it out) and private yoga classes take place in an open-air pavilion set in a garden.

If you get the urge to hit the town, the Sunday evening barbecue brings live bands and fun to Shirley Heights, overlooking English Harbour. You can enjoy fresh grilled seafood at Indigo on the Beach, wood-fired pizzas at Ottimo! or exceptional Asian at East. Nightlife means nightcaps and live piano music at the airy Pavilion Bar, followed by a stroll home along the quiet beach under a sky full of stars – which is really all the entertainment you need on a honeymoon.

We suggest taking advantage of the resort’s private boat. They can ferry you for a sightseeing tour of Nelson’s Dockyard National Park, a 1700s English boatyard-turned-open-air-museum that’s the pride of the island. Or, skip the history and beach-hop around the island. Antigua’s water has to be seen to be believed,

f historic charm and misty mountain vistas are what you envision for your destination wedding, consider Asheville, North Carolina. The city grew in the late 19th century as a health haven for nearby big city dwellers thanks to its elevation and ideal weather conditions. A ROAD TRIP REVEALED

Quirk Hotel

36

Keswick Hall

Maymont

Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden

I

’ve traveled to wedding and honeymoon destinations all over the world, but I’m consistently awed by locations right here in the good ol’ USA. Having grown up on the West Coast, I had never visited Virginia before and to be frank, I was floored by what I found. Hosted by Virginia Tourism Corporation, I went on a road trip to explore what the state had to offer for romance travelers.

If you’re looking for a more traditional option, The Jefferson Hotel just celebrated 120 years and is befitting of royalty with grand ballrooms, a marble-column mezzanine and the infamous Palm Court Lobby. The recently renovated rooms are equally impressive with marble bathrooms and high ceilings. Treat your wedding guests to The Jefferson’s famous Sunday brunch – they will serve up to 1,000 guests a day in high season.

Virginia has three major perks: convenience to big-time East Coast cities, a staggering amount of American history and a varying topography that will leave your head spinning. The capitol of Richmond is roughly a two-hour drive from Washington D.C. and five hours from New York City. The state boasts beaches, the Blue Ridge Mountains, rolling vineyards and some of the prettiest countryside I’ve seen. Driving down unassuming country roads, I passed signs for the homes of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison – to name a few. Here is a sampling of what else I discovered on my Virginia adventure.

If you wish to say “I do” outdoors, both the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden and Maymont Estate are excellent options. Maymont includes a Romanesque-style mansion dating back to 1893 and two gardens that are over a century old. Choose the Japanese Garden for nuptials in front of a waterfall or the Italian Garden for tulips and a dramatic column walkway. The Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden is relatively new to the outdoor wedding scene, having first opened a mere 50 years ago. The options here are more extensive and just as impressive – from the Rose Garden and Visitor’s Center, to the Lace Gazebo and Bloomendale House.

RICHMOND The state’s capital is currently undergoing a renaissance and sees new hotel and restaurant openings on a regular basis. New to the scene, the Quirk Hotel is the perfect example of what Richmond has to offer the modern couple. First opened in the historic Arts District in 2015, Quirk Hotel is an “art-infused” boutique hotel, which has unique touches to spare. I would recommend a ceremony in the marble courtyard, cocktail hour in the art gallery and a rooftop terrace reception to take in the sites of Broad Street below.

CHARLOTTESVILLE An hour northwest of Richmond, you’ll find the former home of three of our nation’s founding fathers and a breathtaking landscape. It’s now home to Keswick Hall and Pippin Hill Farm & Vineyards. Located at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains and a stone’s throw from Jefferson’s Monticello, Keswick Hall is a 48-room mansion, which would make a resplendent option for your guests’ accommodations. For your nuptials, I can’t say enough about Pippin Hill Farm & Vineyards. The décor and architecture are straight out of a Restoration Hardware catalog.

ooking for an island retreat with the ease of a mainland destination? Stretching 120 miles off the southern tip of Florida, the Keys are the answer. A five-hour flight from New York and seven hours from the West Coast brings you to incredible beauty and unforgettable adventure.

Each island has its own vibe, but they share a laid-back attitude. Here we focus on two of our favorites.

KEY WEST

Like your favorite Jimmy Buffet song come to life, the southernmost city in the continental U.S. welcomes you with a big smile. Carol Shaughnessy, Deputy Bureau Chief of the Florida Keys News Bureau, says it best: “Key West is full of friends you haven’t met yet.” Make your wedding as traditional or as eccentric as you can imagine, with a ceremony at a historic landmark like the Audubon House and Tropical Gardens or Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum, or a funky vow-exchange on (or even under) the water. Key West is also one of the most popular U.S. destinations for same-sex weddings. STAY

Pier House Resort & Spa – Conveniently located on the edge of Old Town, this full-service hotel includes a private beach and is steps away from Duval Street’s many attractions.

“The Purple Isle” is the destination of choice for couples seeking an upscale destination a bit off-the-beaten-track. Located on the southern side of the Keys, Islamorada is known as the “sportfishing capital of the world.” Anglers will find more than 500 species of fish and much more. Luxury resorts coexist with quaint lodgings within easy reach of world-class restaurants and a vibrant arts community. STAY

Cheeca Lodge & Spa – Named one of Travel + Leisure’s “Best of the Florida Keys” destination resorts, Cheeca sets the standard for luxury in Islamorada. The property’s white-sand beach and cerulean waters are the perfect backdrop for weddings. The resort welcomes all couples with picture-perfect celebrations from the intimate to the grand. EAT

Magic at the Madeline TELLURIDE:

H

ome to Tomboy Mine (formerly one of the world’s greatest gold producers), Telluride, Colorado knows a thing or two about things that sparkle. Seated in a box canyon in the heart of the San Juan Mountains, the city is enveloped by towering peaks, thick forest and breathtaking waterfalls.

ELEVATION ENCHANTMENT

Take a gondola ride up to the top of the mountain and back down the other side, where you’ll find the charming city of Mountain Village, a European-styled alpine village of restaurants, boutiques and family-centered mountain activities. It is here you’ll find Madeline Hotel and Residences. The Madeline, a luxury ski-resort for travelers with sophisticated taste, is a sensation – regardless of whether you visit in the summer sunshine or the wonderland of winter. As a four-diamond full-service hotel, the Madeline is the ideal place for couples to host their guests and tie the knot. A copy of “Tomboy Bride” by Harriet Fish Backus in your guests’ rooms is a unique wedding favor. Follow in the true footsteps of the book’s protagonist, and the miners that built the town of Telluride, by taking a 4x4 Jeep tour to an elevation of 13,500 feet. Touring the camp is just one of many outdoor activities you and your guests can enjoy in the days before and after you say your vows.

52

When it comes to your rehearsal dinner, there is no shortage of first-class selections. From the upscale cuisine of the Cosmopolitan, to the modern fare of Black Iron Kitchen and Bar, it is impossible to find a backdrop in Telluride that isn’t aweinspiring. No other view can be compared to that of Allred’s Restaurant at St. Sophia Station (at 10,551 feet in elevation). In the evening, Telluride’s lights glow warmly in the valley below. With farmers’ markets, original Victorian architecture, and a living history that abounds around every corner, Telluride is a treasure trove of quaint and cozy feelings. It’s no wonder this small town has caught the eye of many and stole the heart of every fortunate traveler who has visited.

recently visited Big Sky, Montana and was impressed by the destination’s vast offerings in terms of weddings, accommodations and activities. Big Sky boasts the largest ski area in America at roughly 5,600 acres. At Big Sky Resort, summertime activities include biking, archery, zip line, skeet shooting and even a tram adventure to the top of Lone Peak. If you and your guests are visiting this piece of American paradise, fly fishing and white water rafting on the Gallatin River are a must. The sky’s the limit when it comes to accommodations, but our personal favorite is Lone Mountain Ranch, a scenic 60-minute drive from Bozeman following the original Lewis and Clark trail. The land was first homesteaded in 1915 and was opened as a guest ranch in 1927. Some of the guest cabins are original to the

54

ranch with lodgepole pine interiors and comfortable amenities. The ranch can accommodate up to 75 guests across 24 cabins, making a destination wedding buy-out a real possibility. “Lone Mountain is the root of Big Sky,” says Lone Mountain Ranch General Manager, Paul Robertson. The ranch strives to keep those Montana traditions alive by offering world-class fly fishing and horseback riding. Guests can book four-to-seven night packages and, while peak season is May through August, the locals’ favorite is September when the weather is still beautiful, the area is less busy and the Yellowstone wildlife is more active. If a cabin in the woods isn’t quite your cup of tea, you might consider renting a luxury home with a comfortable view. Big

What might surprise you is Big Sky’s proximity to Yellowstone National Park. The gate to enter West Yellowstone is less than 50 miles away. Treating your guests to a pre-wedding day trip to Yellowstone will not only make for great bonding time, but will leave them breathless after sites like Old Faithful and the Grand Prismatic. Tour America’s first national park, established in 1872, with Yellowstone Luxury Tours and you’ll be treated to a picnic lunch and expert information from your professional

guide. Traveling to this part of the country and not seeing Yellowstone equates to a missed opportunity – it’s worth the time to appreciate sweeping natural scenes, dramatic waterfalls and seemingly endless wildlife. I’ve always found that the higher I am in elevation, the more my spirits are lifted. Despite traveling the world-over, I continually find myself returning to this land of big sky, rugged ranges and open spaces. I can’t imagine a more magical place than Montana to be married and I think you will agree. For a round-up of places to say “I do” in Big Sky country, visit destinationido.com/big_sky_weddings.

HONEYMOON HIDEAWAYS

ST. BARTHS:

Sweet Solitude Words by Carolyn Steere

L

ush tropical landscapes, luxurious amenities, lavish, but cozy cottages, large private verandas surrounded by gardens, ocean views from almost every vantage point. These are just a few of the amazing features you’ll find at Le Guanahani on the French Caribbean island of St. Barths. Situated on top of a peninsula nestled between Marigot Bay and Grand Cul-de-Sac, Le Guanahani offers the romantic setting honeymooners seek, without sacrificing the vibrant atmosphere that St. Barths is known for. Party at Nikki Beach or sip cocktails at the trendy Eden Rock, but then return home to the sweet solitude of Le Guanahani.

The cottages were recently redesigned under the guidance of Luis Pons, who married subtle blues and greys with pops of red and yellow. He furnished the rooms with unique pieces that reflect the themes of exploration and travel. For your honeymoon, we suggest a one-bedroom suite with a private pool or, for a truly unique experience, the new Wellness Suite with private access to the spa after-hours.

HONEYMOON HIDEAWAYS

A visit to the Spa by Clarins is a must for any honeymooning couple. Their menu includes a variety of treatments from across the world including Thai, Shiatsu and Lomi-Lomi, as well as facials, body wraps and hot stone massages. The spa’s large, secluded pool is available to all adult guests during their stay. Le Guanahani is blessed with two parallel beaches – one on the calm lagoon side where you can partake in all manner of water sports and the other with more active surf. Deep-sea fishing, tennis, shopping excursions and snorkeling with sea turtles will keep your time at Le Guanahani as busy as you care to be. Le Guanahani has the “je ne sais quoi” that makes it an amazing honeymoon destination.

Gentle walking paths lined with bougainvillea and hibiscus meander through the property’s 18 lush acres past the multicolored cottages and down to Indigo and Indigo on the Beach – the two casual dining options. ITALY: Think Puglia Words by Kathy Till

Book your stay with The Thinking Traveller, a team of experts who want to know and understand all your needs, wants and desires in order to remove honeymoon planning stress. They are always available for questions, do their best to satisfy your wishes and truly know and understand the differences with all the areas and properties in Puglia. I had the distinct pleasure of visiting several of their exclusive, pristine properties too beautiful to imagine. It will be difficult to choose from the numerous and very private villas, masserias and palazzos.

HONEYMOON HIDEAWAYS

The properties are carefully selected and are unique homeaway-from-home options that accommodate anywhere from eight to 18 guests in some of the most breathtaking areas of Puglia. Some services offered include maid service and cooks upon request who will conjure up traditional meals with homegrown food from the local markets. Most estates come standard with courtside cinema, wood-fired pizza ovens and cozy patios to snuggle up on, along with excellent nearby restaurants.

L’Argentiera This luxury villa can sleep a family of 18 with nine bedrooms (each with en-suite bathrooms) and overlooks mesmerizing views of the Adriatic Sea. Anna Maria Chirone, a food writer and teacher, can stop by and give you a lesson in making orecchiette (Puglia’s signature pasta) while you enjoy a glass of Prosecco. Villa Blanca A refreshingly different coastal luxury that has awe-inspiring views and restaurants just around the corner in the resort town of Santa Maria di Leuca. Stop for a casual seaside lunch at Lo Scalo and select an entrée from the fresh caught seafood menu. Trullo Rosmarino and Trullo Terra Dolce These two original, updated properties were inspired from Trulli architecture and are nestled in the Valle d’Itria which has an exquisite quaintness where all the dwellings are built with an interesting cylindrical base and conical tiled roofs.

Masseria Cisterna Rossa This is just the spot to enjoy quiet seclusion in a beautifully restored oasis surrounded by olive orchards and home to an art dealer who owns a gallery in Rome.

I am not sure I have ever seen such creative continuity in a destination. After you visit you will find yourself saying, “I had an incredible experience and I can't wait to come back.” Grazie Mille Puglia!

Palazzo Ducale Guarini Allow the Duke and Duchess to detail how they painstakingly created one of the most amazing gardens – designed with the goal of creating an unforgettable experience. The palazzo is complete with modern amenities and has been in existence for over five centuries.

f you are looking to celebrate your engagement, intimate wedding, honeymoon, or just a romantic getaway, think Puglia (poo-lia), a southern region of the Italian coast or "heel of the boot" of Italy. Traveling to Pulgia is taking a journey into a bygone era. It’s a quiet place where aristocrats spend their summer vacations and where most Italians go on holiday. Every day is like falling in love again while exploring the road less traveled and where all the local towns and fascinating communities showcase their history.

GUATEMALA:

An Artsy Escape Words by Susan Moynihan

S

et in the Guatemalan Highlands on the shores of Lake Atitlan, Casa Palopó started as a vacation home and still feels that way, dressed with vibrant colors, handcrafted wooden furniture and an eclectic array of Latin American art. In fact, the art was one of the things that sealed the deal for owner Claudia Bosch when she bought the hotel. "The former owner was an art collector," she says. "I loved the artwork, too, so when we bought the hotel he included it." The homey living room/bar welcomes visitors who make the 90-mile trek from Guatemala City with oversized sofas, cheeky Botero paintings and colorful folk art. A wooden confessional booth sits in the tiled hallway, adding whimsy. Each of the seven suites has a different color palette, with wood-beamed ceilings, textile accents and cushy beds facing lakefront windows or terraces. The hotel is a member of Relais & Châteaux, so the cuisine at 6.8 Palopó is a work of art as well, offering a classic European take on local ingredients like seafood and plantains. For destination weddings, take over the property’s sister villa as well. Located just above the hotel, it has two more bedrooms, a large open-air salon and infinity pool with wide sun deck, and overlooks a grassy lawn perfect for ceremonies. Casa Palopó has a second private villa in the historic capital of Antigua, ideal if you want to do some pre or post-lake exploring. Guatemala is spot-on for adventurous honeymooners interested in nature and cultural exploration. Hiking and horseback riding are a natural in the region, as are tours to indigenous villages like Panajachel and Santa Catarina Palopó, where women weave and sell colorful textiles, with patterns unique to each home village. And you won't want to miss a chance to get out on the water; Central America's deepest lake is strikingly beautiful and edged by three active volcanoes. When you're back from your excursions, settle into a chaise at one of the two solar-heated infinity pools and watch the sun disappear behind the mountains.

IT'S A NICE DAY FOR A GREEN WEDDING

ASK THE EXPERT

A

imee Monihan founded Tropical Occasions in Costa Rica in 1999 as the country’s first professional wedding planning and design firm. She helped develop and pioneer the destination wedding market to where it is today – one of the world’s top destinations for weddings and honeymoons. Her initial love for the land has transformed her business into one focused on sustainability and ecofriendly practices. Destination weddings can often create large carbon footprints due to the amount of travel required by guests, so Destination I Do has asked Aimee to share some easy and clever ways to help decrease your wedding’s impact on Mother Earth.

64

REUSE & REPURPOSE

STAY GREEN

Get creative by having décor items do double duty. “For example, consider reusing lanterns and flower arrangements from your ceremony to decorate your reception tables,” says Aimee. Tropical Occasions has gotten creative in the past by designing a stunning ceremony backdrop using locally sourced, recycled bottles. Then, post-ceremony, they placed the same bottles down the center of the reception tables as additional décor. Reusing and repurposing your décor is not only ecofriendly, but budget-friendly too.

When booking room blocks for your guests or deciding on your event’s venue, take into account the properties’ sustainability practices. “We work with some amazing properties in Costa Rica that are 100% sustainable – from solar to hydro-powered, saltwater pools and organic restaurants,” explains Aimee. “We love planning with them as we know they care as much as we do and will work with us to collaborate with our clients on how to be more green. Visit cayugaonline.com for some great sustainable properties.”

destinationido.com

"

SOURCE LOCALLY

GIVE BACK

SAVE THE TREES

If you can’t go without flowers for your ceremony or reception, consider sourcing them locally and opt for flora that grows naturally and in abundance. For one wedding, Tropical Occasions incorporated décor details found in the Costa Rican jungle nearby. “The ceremony was a simple walkway of fallen coconuts, palm fronds used as fans and chair décor, and tall fallen bamboo poles decorated with floating hemp fabric,” explains Aimee. “It was beautiful, modern, produced a zero-cost florist bill and, above all, was incredibly eco-conscious.”

Perhaps the most straightforward way to offset your wedding’s carbon footprint is to make a cash donation on behalf of you and your guests. This could also serve as your favors. Some options include carbonfund.org and terrapass.com. If you want to be more hands-on, consider doing something for the community where you marry. “One of our past clients had all their guests bring school supplies and they went to a local impoverished school to gift the items to students,” recalls Aimee. “Another option is, in lieu of gifts, donate to a local eco-cause.”

“Instead of using paper, consider a PDF that is compatible with a smart phone or combine both invite and welcome info with a great app like Appy Couple,” suggests Aimee. Also, get creative when it comes to signage: write on reusable chalkboards, mirrors or driftwood from the local beach. A more hands-on approach would be hosting a tree-planting celebration with your guests. You can make it a fun and symbolic way of giving back.

You can also make the most of your destination’s resources by hiring a chef or caterer who specializes in sustainable food practice (i.e. an emphasis on organic, locally-grown items). When designing your wedding menu, support local farms and food suppliers by celebrating regional flavors. Try not to use anything that needs to be imported.

For more information

In most cases, couples have strong ties to their chosen wedding destination. So, why not take some or all of these small steps toward helping preserve the land you love? Aimee explained it best when she said, “You do not have to be wasteful or extravagant to have an amazing event.”

Wedding Guest Guidelines Words by Elaine Hilbelink

ADVENTURES IN ETIQUETTE

Illustration Š istockphoto.com, Stock vector ID: 36200598, artist: stockakia

ttending a wedding today comes with a new set of etiquette rules. From social media and technology emerging as part of any special event (selfies and GoPro’s oh, my!), to ditching old traditions like how long you have to send a gift, guests have their own list of social graces to obey. Here is a list of our top five questions and how to navigate the world of destination weddings, gifting and all the responsibilities you have as a guest.

72

destinationido.com

Q: I’ve always heard it’s a faux pas to wear white to a wedding. Does this apply to a destination wedding and is it even still an issue in this day and age?

A: Before using your cell phone to photograph and share on social media, I would ask the host or wedding coordinator what the couple’s wishes are.

A: Traditionally white has always been the color for the bride to wear. A guest would never want to dress in anything that might compete with anyone in the bridal party. With all the colors available, discarding one (white) shouldn’t be an issue – especially if it risks upsetting the bride.

Q: I just got my first invitation to a destination wedding.

Q: My husband and I were recently invited to a destination

on the registry. This avoids transporting the gift for you and the couple. Technically you have up to a year to send a gift, but it is best to send it as soon as possible and preferably within a month of the wedding.

wedding and the invitation said “adults only.” Does this mean just the wedding or do we have to leave our children home altogether? Is there a polite way to bring this up to the couple if it is not possible to leave our children at home?

A: If it is your desire to turn the destination wedding into a family vacation, I would check with the venue to see if they have any resources for childcare during the activities that are “adults only.” You could also check with the hosts to see what is being planned for the bridal weekend. If the whole event is “adults only,” you should respect the wishes of the hosts and either not attend or arrange for childcare during the times you wish to be included in the pre-planned wedding activities. Q: I recently attended a wedding where the couple asked guests not to use their cell phones during the ceremony and reception, but I also attended a wedding where the couple created their own social media hashtag. How do I know if the couple is okay with my taking pictures and sharing them via social media?

The couple’s registry information was included, but do I take the gift with me to the destination? If not, how long do I have to send a gift?

A: It is always advisable to send gifts to the address listed

Q: I’m attending a destination wedding where I wasn’t initially granted a ‘plus one’ because I was single. However, I’m now dating someone who I would like to bring with me to the wedding. Is it okay to ask the couple if I can bring a date?

A: It is always a delicate situation to approach hosts to inquire about extra guests. If the couple is close to you, they may be aware that your situation has changed. If you do inquire, you never want to put the couple in an awkward situation of feeling obligated to add a plus one. The bride has been a part of the wedding and event industry for over ten years, so we at Destination I Do reached out to discover how she pulled off not one, but two fantastic wedding events.

DID: Why did you choose to have a bridal shower and how did hosting a destination wedding influence your decision? BRIDE: Many of my family and friends were unable to attend our destination wedding, so it was important for me to have a shower to be able to celebrate with the 16 most important women in my life.

74

DID: How and why did you choose the event location? BRIDE: Since [my now-husband and I] launched Estate Weddings and Events back in 2007, I always assumed we would get married at an estate and since we chose to get married in Mexico, I thought having my shower at one of my favorite estates would be perfect. It was also a way for me to share my work with the ladies that I love most in my life.

destinationido.com

DID: How would you describe your bridal shower and how was the styling influenced by your destination wedding? BRIDE: Since we were having a modern, Mexican-themed reception in Mexico’s wine country, we wanted to do something completely different for the shower, but still speaking to my style. The Sanctuary Estate was the perfect setting to host a bold, boho-inspired Balinese bridal shower. Tam of Isari Flower Studio created bright and bold centerpieces and combined them with boho-style lounges in a clean, modern home.

BRIDE: Do not stress over the little things and take time to enjoy every minute of it. Let the experts do what they do best, so you do not have to worry about the details. If you can hire a planner, it’s well worth it. You only get married once and you should be able to enjoy it!

VENDORS: PHOTOGRAPHY: lunaphoto, lunaphoto.com, EVENT PLANNER: CBS Lifestylist, cbslifestylist.com, VENUE: Sanctuary Estate in Rancho

DID: What was your favorite aspect of your bridal shower? BRIDE: My favorite aspect of the day was of course spending it with all my friends and family. I was fortunate to have a very talented group of friends or “friendors” to create such a spectacular day for me.

THE HONEYMOONIST

Cabo Reborn Words by Susan Moynihan

I

THE HONEYMOONIST

n September 2014, Hurricane Odile blew through Los Cabos, wreaking havoc. But now, after a lot of hard work, most hotels have reopened and are better than ever, with upgraded rooms and expanded offerings. Here are four favorites, ready for romance. EASY ALL-INCLUSIVES Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos The much-anticipated Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos sits on a wide stretch of beach in San Jose del Cabo. The 591 rooms are set horseshoe-style around the oversized lagoon-style pool and adjacent oceanfront infinity pool with swim-up bar. We also love the lounge chairs; get there early to grab a pair set on a ledge

in the pool itself! Come evening, hit one of seven restaurants (including oceanfront Italian at Zafiro or teppanyaki-style grill at DoZo), take in a stage show at the theater or party in the sports bar or piano bar, depending on your mood. THE WEDDING: Ziva was built with big events in mind. Hold your ceremony on the beach or by the adult pool, then party all night in one of the ballrooms. Multiple kitchens means you can bring in a chef to create specialty menus, from Indian to kosher. THE HONEYMOON: Book an oceanview swim-up suite and you just might never leave your room. They have 24-hour room service, so you don't have to.

Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos

Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach Golf & Spa Resort This 635-room all-inclusive in Cabo San Lucas is terraced into a hillside facing the Pacific. Generously-sized rooms come with family-friendly perks like full kitchenettes, pull-out sofas and oceanview terraces. The property is large, but connected by winding paths and serviced by continuous golf carts. The seven restaurants and three bars include AAA Four Diamond LaFrida (surcharge applies) and a new all-night bistro, a first for Cabo. Shuttle service connects you to two sister resorts downtown, where you have access to a swimmable beach and all of the facilities.

THE WEDDING: Opened this year, the covered beach pavilion lets you have a ceremony and reception just steps from the waves. Or, wow your guests with amazing views at the hilltop Sky Terrace – a stone terrace surrounding a tiered pool. THE HONEYMOON: Post-vows, move to Pueblo Bonito Pacifica Golf & Spa Resort, the adult-only sister property set on a gorgeous beach just minutes away. The scene is completely different, with only 154 rooms and a spa-like desert vibe.

THE WEDDING: Hold your ceremony in the charming hilltop chapel, then stroll down to a poolside reception at Agua by Larbi. The hacienda-style ballroom is a natural for after-parties; it's set off by itself so you can go as late and as loud as you want. THE HONEYMOON: Cozy up in an oceanfront pool casita, with a terrace plunge pool overlooking Turtle Beach. When you get the urge to stir, your butler can arrange a couple's treatment at the redone spa, set in your own treatment room with a private garden.

LUXURY CLASSICS One&Only Palmilla This celebrity favorite took advantage of the storm to redo interiors and add a few extras without losing the “Old Mexico vibe that makes it so special. New additions include an expanded spa, with a garden for bridesmaids' parties and a retro Barber and Blade for the men. Jean-Georges Vongerichten gets his grill on at SEARED, featuring steaks and fish a la plancha, while Suviche goes the opposite direction with sushi and sashimi. The 173 rooms all have redone interiors, featuring earthy textile accents and modern Mexican art paired with rain showers, soaking tubs and oceanview terraces.

One&Only Palmilla

The Resort at Pedregal Set on the northern side of Cabo San Lucas, this romantic favorite was spared much of the storm damage of other resorts, but has still made a few changes. The biggest is the name change; formerly known as Capella Pedregal, it is now independently operated as The Resort at Pedregal. That being said, guests won't notice the difference; most of the staff has stayed on and the quality has remained untouched. The striking signature restaurant, El Farallon, dramatically perched on an ocean-facing cliff, added an al fresco Champagne bar where you can enjoy bubbly tastings in impeccable surroundings. Also new are expanded wellness options at Luna y Mar Spa; think treatments timed to the phases of the moon and moonlight

meditation sessions. What hasn't changed are the sexy rooms. Every one comes with a king bed, separate sitting area with fireplace and a plunge pool facing the sea – bliss! THE WEDDING: The Resort at Pedregal is famous for its tunnel that links the Cabo side of the resort on the Sea of Cortez with the Pacific-facing beach. Use this to make your entrance for a sunset ceremony in the sand, followed by an open-air party at the Beach Club Terrace. THE HONEYMOON: We love their comprehensive honeymoon package, which includes dinners at each restaurant as well as on the beach and in their private wine cellar, plus couple's massages, a cooking class and other perks.

n Halloween 11 years ago, Rainbow Brite locked eyes with a Super Trooper and the rest was history. Today they’re simply known as Jamie and Luke and both have been involved in the wedding and event industry for over ten years.

We wanted a wedding that was intimate, did not feel like work and was 100% ‘us.’”

SPRING & SUMMER 2016

It wasn’t until a spur of the moment trip down to Valle de Guadalupe, Mexico that the couple met their venue match: Encuentro Guadalupe. “In less than 24 hours we had decided that when we had our wedding, it would be there,” says the bride. “Our love of food, wine and, of course, Mexico is what made us quickly fall in love with this little destination just south of the border.”

REAL-LIFE WEDDINGS

However, when it came time to plan their own wedding, the couple was stumped. “With an absolute passion for event space and finding unique, off-the-beaten-path venues, you would think it would be an easy decision of where we would get married,” says Jamie. “Surprisingly, we didn’t have a clue.”

87

REAL-LIFE WEDDINGS

“I wanted no part in planning or designing our wedding,” says Jamie. “We wanted the process to be easy and fun, so we put full trust in our talented group of ‘friendors’ who we trusted very much to make our day a success. After being in the wedding and events industry for ten-plus years, we wanted a wedding that was intimate, did not feel like work and was 100% ‘us.’”

It wasn’t until a spur of the moment trip down to Valle de Guadalupe, Mexico that the couple met their venue match: Encuentro Guadalupe.

The couple was smart to place their trust in their vendors. “The style of the reception incorporated the modern, eco features of the venue with traditional Mexican style by incorporating textiles, bright colorful florals and rustic wood farm tables,” explains the bride. “The wedding day was relaxing and never once did we feel stressed out. We knew our amazing team of vendors had it under control.”

and boutique hotel called Monteverdi in the medieval village of Castiglioncello del Trinoro. This is where 130 friends and family joined them from all over the U.S. and Italy to experience an unforgettable celebration.

olitical functions and romance don’t typically go hand-inhand, but for one destined couple, it was the start to a life even a Disney princess would go green with envy over. Gina found herself attending George Washington University while Scott was in and out of D.C. for his job in politics. The two ended up at the same political event and the rest is history. “Having just moved to D.C., I thought I should learn a little more about the political process firsthand, but didn’t know I would find a husband instead!” recalls Gina.

SPRING & SUMMER 2016

REAL-LIFE WEDDINGS

When it came time to decide on where to have their wedding, the destination was an obvious choice. Gina already spent much of her time in Tuscany running a passion project and family business: an exquisite collection of restored 12th century villas

The ceremony setting turned out to be symbolic in more ways than one. Gina’s father’s favorite place in the village is the town’s oldest structure: the medieval archway. “We actually had not planned on using the arch in the ceremony at all, until our designer, David Beahm, said off-handedly, ‘It’s too bad we can’t do the ceremony right here under the arch.’ Scott and I both looked at each other and knew instantly it had to be the place,” says Gina. The archway is symbolic of new beginnings as well as persistence and strength, so it made sense that the couple passed through the archway with all their guests.

95

“The inspiration for our reception was a glass of Champagne…everything from the tablecloths to the centerpieces had a feeling of elegant sparkle.” Outside of the gorgeous setting, music took center stage for the reception with Rhythm Collective performing and Grammy award winning, Steve Tyrell serenading the father/ daughter dance.

There were a lot of logistical challenges and hiring a wedding designer like David Beahm Experiences to execute was extremely helpful.”

Gina and Scott didn’t say goodnight until the sun came up and Gina took one last look at the stunning décor. “When we came out again, all of it – every chair, every tablecloth and every flower – was gone, as if it had never happened. It was a nice metaphor for looking forward to the life ahead of us, rather than dwelling, even on the good things, in the past.”

girl walks into a bar…only the punch line this time is, “They lived happily ever after.”

However, the tragic loss of her father back in 2006, made the reason to choose Maui even more special. “Even though he couldn’t walk me down the aisle, I felt like he was there with us in Maui – a place he loved and where our family had shared so many great memories,” recalls Ashley. The help of a professional planner eased the process considerably. “I would never do a destination wedding without a wedding planner. Without [Belle Destination Weddings and Events], there is no way I could have pulled it off,” says the bride.

An idyllic ceremony with the traditional blowing of the conch shell, the blue ocean in the distance and all their special loved ones there to witness was just what the couple was after. They added a special Christian dedication for their one-year-old daughter to make sure she was involved. “It was a beautiful moment and a way to share our love and commitment not only as husband and wife, but as parents.” The reception included all the details the bride had envisioned during her planning: a floating chandelier over the dance floor, canopies over bare wood tables, lounge furniture and even gold-rimmed glassware. One bit of advice the bride has for others, “Just let it go and enjoy this time with the people who love you and your fiancée the most.” VENDORS: Photographer: Tamiz Photography, tamizphotography.com, Wedding Planning and Design: Belle Destination Weddings and Events, belledestinationevents.com, Ceremony/Reception Site: Olowalu Plantation House, olowaluplantationhouse.com, Floral: Mandy Grace, mandygracedesigns.com, Stationery: Erica Keuter, ericakeuterdesigns.com, Bride’s Dress: Custom Couture gown

Thankfully, the couple’s loved ones were thrilled and the majority of them turned the couple’s wedding into a week-long Colorado vacation. “We wanted a whole weekend with our friends and

family to celebrate not only our marriage, but how special each and every person is to us,” says the bride. Come W-Day, the couple was joined by 160 guests atop Vail Mountain. The couple had a vision for their reception, which centered around creating a great experience for their guests. “The reception was fun and lively and the décor was Kate Spadeinspired,” says Nicole. “We wanted our guests to enjoy a nice dinner, but in a fun and inviting atmosphere that set the tone for a true celebration. Following the first dances, not one slow song was played and that is exactly what we wanted.”
