Spicy
As you head into your exciting wedding plans, it may not even be on your radar yet to “keep things spicy” with your betrothed. Right now, everything is fresh and new and excitement happens without even trying. However, there will come a time in your marriage (and I say this as someone who is celebrating her nine-year wedding anniversary) where keeping the romance alive is important.

This is a “PG” magazine, so I won’t get into details on how to stoke the flame of love. I’m sure surfing the Internet will prove more helpful than I ever could be on that subject. • It’s probably easier to legally marry in the U.S. than in those few countries where same-sex marriage is legal, so plan to marry at home and host your celebration abroad. • The last thing you want on your wedding day is to experience discrimination, so start by choosing a destination known to be LGBT-friendly, a place like Mexico, the ABC islands (Aruba, Bonaire & Curacao), the U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico or one of the countries where same-sex marriage is legal, such as South Africa or Iceland! • When you are booking your wedding venue, be sure to ask the sales manager if all of the staff, including banquet staff who will be with you on your wedding day, are LGBT-friendly. • You may want to bring fully vetted LGBT-friendly vendors such as photographers and officiants with you from the States so you don’t have to worry about finding those talents in your destination location. One great place to find vendors is equallywed.com.

VILLA-STYLE
LUXE LIVING:
Words by Courtney Cox
VIRGIN GORDA Despite having been to the Caribbean several times, I sorely underestimated the beauty of Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands. It’s not the easiest island to get to, but it’s well worth your effort and absolutely stunning for your destination wedding or honeymoon respite.
This magnificent villa comes with everything you would expect: a full staff, sparkling pool, home theater, suites with breathtaking views and privacy, but what sets this villa apart is what you don’t expect. I can’t say enough about the 500 yards of near-private beach. Wade through turquoise waters by day and get lost in a massive beach bonfire by night. After enjoying a light lunch in the property’s spectacular and authentic Balinese beach house, meander down to the beach for a swim out to your own private yacht. The villa’s 70-foot yacht and its staff are included in your rental and are at your disposal. All you’re required to pay in

It’s the details at Valley Trunk which will have you coming back – Hermès bath products, luxurious linens and breathtaking views from every room of the house. If you’re looking to venture outside the villa, the nearby geological wonder, Baths National Park, is a must-see with massive granite boulders emerging from the sand and sea. Much like the staff, most of whom have worked at Valley Trunk for over 20 years, you’ll find it hard to leave this paradise
Costa Rica has a long history of being sought after as a romantic retreat and after visiting for the first time, it’s easy to see why. A lush jungle setting, gorgeous coastal views, friendly locals, exotic wildlife and adventurous activities are all the makings of a loving paradise.
Costa Rica cemented itself on the couples short list of must-visits ages ago, but it’s still improving year by year. If you’re looking to say “I do” in this iconic Central American country, let us suggest an alternative to resort nuptials. In the days after the “I do's,” newlyweds can stroll hand-in-hand into town to shop and dine like royalty. The city's European-style decadence is evident down every block between the hotel and Worth Avenue, a world-famous shopping destination. Other options include museums, tours and cruises – but, let's face it, being a bride takes a lot, so there's no need to overdo it. At the end of the day, it’s easy to appreciate the way The Brazilian Court Hotel takes pampering to the next level. Tuck yourselves away in your room's completely private courtyard, get room service from Café Boulud, lay out by the pool or indulge in the inimitable service of the Frédéric Fekkai Salon and Spa located on property. "I want everyone to leave happier," says Philippe Barr, Fekkai's brilliant creative director, on the power of a great hair day or creating a timeless bridal look. Regardless of your idea of luxury, Palm Beach's Brazilian Court Hotel, Café Boulud and Frédéric Fekkai Salon and Spa will not disappoint you or your guests. In fact, they'll probably redefine what you think of the word altogether.

When people think of the Smoky Mountains, they may envision thick forests, babbling brooks and quaint log cabins with crackling fireplaces alive with warmth. A destination where comfort food is made with care and everyone waves as you pass them by. A place where life’s pace slows a beat and the residents of Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge and Sevierville, Tennessee welcome you with genuine Southern hospitality.
It’s pretty much exactly like this, only the “quaint log cabins” are enormous and quite luxurious. There is also an abundance of fun things to see and do. From theme parks and miniature golf, to nighttime shows and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, this area is a fantastic escape for families and groups.
Eat The Chop House: The mouthwatering steaks and chops here are major crowd pleasers. You can even top your steak with up to ten decadent items, such as crab cakes or lobster. The Hard Rock Café – Pigeon Forge: It is able to accommodate large groups with a sizeable menu that satisfies a range of tastes. The Applewood Farmhouse Restaurant: Delicious, home-style food with generous portions and take-away options, as well.

Clear communication early in the wedding planning process about financial responsibilities with all of the stakeholders is the key to preventing stressful relationships later on. The best way to avoid disappointments, misunderstandings and frayed relationships is to clearly define expectations and financial commitments before issues ensue.
Q: My parents graciously offered to help pay for my destination wedding and now I'm not sure how to proceed. Are there questions I should be asking? Should I expect money up-front or after the wedding is over?
A: The most important question to clarify from the very beginning is your parents’ intended budget for your destination wedding. After you know their contribution, you can then factor in what the groom’s family might want to pay for and what your finances as a couple might be. Awareness of your total budget can help you in decision making as to affordable venues, allocating your budget among the many line items and honeymoon plans. Another question to clarify early on would be the intended guest list for your destination. It is wise to set up a “wedding account” with available funds so that vendors might be paid as the need arises. Setting up funds before expenses crop up would be ideal.

Q: I am a bridesmaid traveling to an international destination wedding and the bride is expecting her attendants to throw her a
afford to plan and host these other events?
A: This is a sensitive situation. You need to “draw a line in the sand” about what you can and cannot afford, but you don’t want the bride to feel everyone is discussing it behind her back. Perhaps one of you could talk to the bride in person and carefully explain your financial situation and share that you know at least a few others who are struggling with wedding expenses. You could also suggest some alternative possibilities for celebrations. It might be possible for an aunt or other relative to host a shower for the bride. A meal out with just the bridesmaids at your destination with a group gift of lingerie might also be an option. Get creative and brainstorm with your friends what you can do to make the bride feel special without busting everyone’s budgets.
Q: One of my vendors is requiring I pay them in-full up-front. Is this common and acceptable?
A: Payment to vendors can vary. Stationery is paid for when ordered. It is common and acceptable for photographers, videographers, florists and wedding planners to expect at least a partial payment or deposit up-front. The reason they ask for this is to reserve the date for you. Check contracts to verify what their policy is if they are sick or hurt and unable to fulfill your agreement. Destination venues usually require a deposit for part of your package. Hotels and resorts do not usually require payment in-full because the number of guests and bar usage, etc. might not be determined until after the event. It is good to verify with each of the vendors what their policies are.
Q: My fiancé and I have found our dream vendors, but some of them are out of our budget. Can we try to negotiate a lower price or is that rude?
Q: My fiancé and I want a honeymoon, but frankly can’t afford one. What are our options?
A: Be creative and focus on what you and your fiancé enjoy doing together that is within your budget. You do not want to begin your married life with debt and financial strain. A few options might be: • Speak to your destination wedding venue and see if you might get a special rate to extend your stay a night or two for a short honeymoon. • Think about friends or relatives who might have a vacation home you could use or rent for a reasonable fee. • Get back to nature and go camping. • Delay your honeymoon for six months or a year (you will have probably used your vacation for the destination wedding anyway). • Plan a few special events in your home locale…day trips, special dinners out, a night at the theater or sports event, etc.
A: Yes, you can attempt to negotiate the price, but you need

GREAT
OUTDOORS Words by Carolyn Gerin
The pinnacle of cool (the place everyone’s been fiending to get into) isn’t the hottest club in town: it’s your backyard. It's a daunting task to find a night when everyone’s schedules line up and a restaurant that fits everyone’s tastes. Plus, it’s expensive: cabs, parking fees, pricey wine lists and noisy foodies can turn your meal into an ordeal. But, when you have digs that demand attention, your own outdoor ambiance can be every bit as wonderful. Here are some of our favorite products and lifestyle trend forecasters weighing-in on how to bring indoor glamour outdoors – transforming your urban (or suburban) oasis.

It’s touted as the new, modern face of the Middle East with a raging art scene, runway-worthy fashion and luxury shopping, hip and haute hotels, rapturous restaurants and deep ties to its nomadic desert roots. Forget about that “Vegas of the Desert” moniker. Dubai is one-of-a-kind, pure class (admittedly, with a dash of man-made artifice) with more romantic “wow-factor” experiences per square foot than many predictable honeymoon getaways.

Couples with an appetite for adventure and an appreciation for nature will adore Peru. Whether you want to tiptoe across a tree canopy walkway in a rainforest, behold Machu Picchu in a cloud forest or photograph pink dolphins and giant water lilies in the Amazon River, you will fall madly and deeply in love with the paradise known as Peru. While you are climbing to heaven, you must check out Cusco (or what I call Cloud Ten), over 11,000 feet above sea level and the former capital of the Inca Empire, which graciously welcomes international travelers with a bevy of markets, artisan shops and restaurants. “Peru is an ideal destination for honeymooners as it offers unique and romantic experiences throughout the country. Whether a city lover or wilderness aficionado, Peru’s hospitality scene has evolved to cater to every travel palate,” says Claire Andre, Inkaterra Research & Development Manager. Ranging in size, aesthetic and geographical location, properties like Inkaterra La Casona, Inkaterra Reserva Amazónica and Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo not only provide guests with luxurious accommodations, they also showcase authentic activities and adventures to create an unforgettable honeymoon. Our adventure began aboard Aqua Expeditions’ Aria, a 16-suite cruise ship equipped with oversized suites and my personal obsession, floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows to watch the Amazon River glide by. “Aqua Expeditions offers a luxurious and exotic honeymoon option for travelers looking for a truly special, once-in-a-lifetime experience. It combines adventure and exploration along with fine dining, relaxation and sophistication in one of the world’s last untouched paradises, all while offering the privacy and exclusivity honeymooners are looking for,” says Aqua Expeditions’ CEO Francesco Galli Zugaro.

BERLIN, LEIPZIG & DRESDEN Words by Carolyn Gerin
1.
What compels someone to return to a place repeatedly, when there’s so much to see in the world? Curiosity, certainly – this was my third time visiting Germany. Frictionless mobility and variety are other reasons: for the romance traveler who seeks ease coupled with eclectic – Germany has it all. Everything you desire is in close proximity and on the rails. That is, if crowded airlines and navigating maps in your rent-a-car isn’t exactly your “cup of Hefeweizen.” The get: big cosmopolitan city swagger, picture-postcard villages with gingerbread-house architecture, boisterous harvest, art, music and beer festivals throughout the year, and stunning, pristine scenery. The give: not much – it’s affordable and easy. Hop the rails on a multitude of “bahns” that run frequently to every corner of the country and you’re at destination wonderful

in a few hours. You’ll get variety – from edgy Berlin, to artsy and musical Leipzig, to glorious, historic Dresden. The upside? Everything in Germany runs like clockwork, ensuring a deeply satisfying and stress-free honeymoon. BERLIN BEGIN
Fly Lufthansa to Berlin, the buzzy, international city which has risen like a Phoenix from the ashes. Modern history surrounds you, from the haunting Berlin Wall remains, to the museums on Alexanderplatz and the ghosts of Soviet occupation. On the East – explore the ultimate hipster haven, crawling with artists, technorati, musicians and renegade chefs; the West is more posh and “uptown” with epic museums and monuments, fine dining, smoky jazz clubs and world-class shopping. East: Get your zeitgeist on at the award-winning hotel Ackselhaus’ Blue Home – located in the heart of boho Kollwitzplatz. Your room is design-nerd heaven: throwback 60s GDR-meets-Mad-Men-glam. Enjoy cocktails on your balcony with a full view of the Fernsehturm (the Berlin TV Tower). Later, run around surrounding neighborhoods and sample eclectic Turkish cuisine, bustling wine bars, edgy art galleries and the official Ramones Museum.

GERMANY
LEAPING LEIPZIG
A grand commercial city from 1165, hosting trade fairs with Europe's top merchants, Leipzig boasts riches and beauty once attracting the likes of Bach, Mendelssohn, Schumann and more. Check into the Steigenberger Grandhotel Handelshof Leipzig, a former trade fair palace, and prepare to be dazzled. Glamorous rooms overlook the Naschmarkt Square, Goethe’s statue and the Old Town Hall. Head out for historical romance: visit composers Clara and Robert Schumann’s faithfully preserved home or renew your vows at the floating church VINETA, an art object and church which floats like a boat on Lake Störmthal. When night falls, enjoy a Riesling with your sweetie on the balcony overlooking the comedic caberet revue at Krystallpalast Varieté Leipzig where music, acrobatics and dance hold you spellbound – a must see.
DRESDEN THE DIVINE
Dresden is a testament to the power of positive thinking: having been leveled in WWII, it rose back to pre-war greatness due to painstaking city planning and sheer force of will. Steigenberger Hotel de Saxe is a jewel atop the crown of the cobblestone streets of Neumarkt. After a sumptuous breakfast, head next door to the majestic Frauenkirche (Church of our Lady) – the soul of the city – offering transformative concerts of sublime beauty. The works of J.S. Bach are performed by a full orchestra.

West: The Kempinski Hotel Bristol Berlin brings the city to your doorstep: the train station, shopping district, museums and fine dining. Rooms are comfortable, the staff is attentive and breakfast is a regional carb and protein smorgasbord. It’s a “grand dame of a hotel” with traditional velvet, gilt and baroque pinnings, yet reasonably priced – think of it as your basecamp at the center of things.
Enjoy hearty Saxon fare like venison and spaetzle at Coselpalais or Steigenberger Hotel de Saxe and head into the historic city center: Augustus Bridge, Königstrasse, Japanese Palace and Canaletto View. A tour of the Grünes Gewölbe palace boasts the largest collection of ancient treasures in Europe. Relax into a romantic paddle steamer boat ride up the Elbe, or ride a cable car to the Weißer Hirsch district and dine at sunset from your perch at the Luisenhof restaurant. Germany is ready for whatever you have in mind: big city swank, modern and ancient art experiences, hearty-to-haute cuisine, music from bohemian to Bach and back again. Variety, economy and efficiency – Germany is a beautiful bargain and is as pleasing on the eye as it is on the wallet.
From Cotton to Culture: Don’t miss Spinnerei – a historic spinning factory and artists’ community showcasing emerging European artists in a magnificent, massive industrial space.

TOGETHER FOREVER IN Words by Victoria Abbott Riccardi
Words by Victoria Abbott Riccardi
Kissing atop the Eiffel Tower, cruising hand-in-hand down the Seine, sharing éclairs at a café – yes – Paris loves lovers, as Fred Astaire once sang. The only thing more romantic than tying the knot or honeymooning in Paris is to do both, depending upon your timing, budget and desire.
First is the Sofitel Arc de Triomphe, recently renovated to resemble an elegant Parisian home and just off the bustling Champs-Élysées lined with shops, cafés and cinemas. Named after the glorious monument built to honor those who fought for France, particularly during the Napoleonic Wars, the hotel has 124 rooms, including five Prestige Suites and two apartments, perfect for wedding couples or honeymooners. While room styles vary, all have pale lilac walls, dreamy featherbeds and massive white-tiled bathrooms with gorgeous, spa-like soaking tubs. Caribbean Ease THE HONEYMOONIST'S PICKS:
the HONEYMOONIST
Words by Susan Moynihan
As a long-time travel writer and founder of The Honeymoonist, a boutique travel company specializing in wedding and honeymoon planning, I’m on the road a lot. There are a million fancy hotels out there – I know, I’ve stayed in plenty of them! But to me, what makes a resort truly special is that combination of luxury and a low-key vibe. You know, the kind of place which offers beautiful surroundings, gorgeous rooms and impeccable service, without being stuffy or pretentious. Here are four of my favorites in the Caribbean which are perfect for a honeymoon.
Round Hill Hotel & Villas, Jamaica With pedigree like this, Round Hill has every reason to be stuffy. After all, it was founded in 1953 as a cottage-style retreat for the American high-society set (Oscar and Dorothy Hammerstein, Bill and Babe Paley), who owned some of the first villas here. The resort celebrates its lineage proudly, with black and white photographs showing the likes of Grace Kelly. (Managing Director Josef Forstmeyr knows the stories behind every photo – ask him!) Guests return year after year, giving it an intimate, personal feel. Today, the resort comprises 27 two-to-six-bedroom villas, with natty navy and white décor courtesy of designer (and frequent guest) Ralph Lauren. It’s set on its own private 110-acre peninsula, with plenty of places to kick back, including a gorgeous two-tier infinity pool set in an 18th century stone Great House and a perfectly private curve of beach. Dining is a treat, thanks in large part to the on-site garden that provides the resort’s produce. Farm-to-table dinners, a weekly beach barbecue and piano-bar sing-alongs give guests easy ways to mingle, creating friendships which span generations.

SANTA MARGARITA HALEY + TYLER
Tyler and Haley’s relationship started much the same way their adventure as husband and wife did – dancing the night away at a wedding surrounded by their favorite people.
Currently living in Los Angeles, the couple chose Santa Margarita off the central California coast as the site of their September 2013 nuptials. Haley’s family owns a local winery, Indian Valley Vineyards, so she had spent time in the area since her teenage years. It was also a favorite rendezvous spot for the couple when they were living on opposite ends of the California coast. “It was a great excuse for us to spend even more time in the area on weekends doing wedding planning,” admits Haley.

Their guests, on the other hand, are likely to remember their ride on a historic steam engine to the rustic barn, which housed the reception. SÃO PAULO RENATA + DANTE
Words by Kate Darnell Images by Sam Hurd, samhurdphotography.com
A night out on the town proved to be the fateful evening Dante and Renata would fall in love. Dante was a bass player and Renata happened to be at the very pub where his band was performing. From that moment on, they were always together. 94
“It’s funny because we both hate going out, and met in a crowded pub. I still can’t believe our luck: in a city with over 20 million people, we would meet that easily,” says Renata.

See what happens when girls fall in love with books. In the developing world, a girl doesn’t have a lot of options. She often has to drop out of school to work or marry young due to societal pressures. But an education can change that. The longer girls stay in school, the more likely they are to earn higher wages, marry later in life, have healthier families and educate their own children. Room to Read has helped thousands of girls gain the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in school and beyond. Honor the power of education on your wedding day with a gift that changes lives. While assisting with a photo shoot for a friend’s clothing line, Royale fell in love with the man behind the camera. “After the shoot I asked him to email me the proofs, but I really just wanted his email address so I could ‘friend’ him on MySpace,” recalls Royale. Years later, the dynamic duo was ready to say “I do” in beautiful British Colombia. A destination wedding was obvious for the couple, considering they have traveled to roughly 40 countries. Originally, the plan was to wed in Croatia, but after finding out that Royale’s pregnant sister was due around the same time, they decided to keep the event closer to home. With 40 of their dearest friends and family, Royale and Sean embarked on an unforgettable wedding week. Upon arrival in Victoria, the boys teed off for a round of golf at Bear Mountain, while the girls attended a high tea bridal shower at Butchart Gardens.
We wanted the ambience of the reception to be classic, elegant and romantic with the castle setting…soft candlelight with clean, crisp whites.
The couple was fortunate enough to incorporate their loved ones into their special day. “My best friend sang Édith Piaf’s ‘La vie en rose’ for our first dance and my sister sang Elton John’s ‘Your Song’ as her toast. Our dear friend designed our photo booth and another friend shot our beautiful wedding video. Lastly, my oldest friend of 23 years, and the person who introduced us at the photo shoot, married us,” explains Royale. The wedding ceremony was to be held in the Italian Garden of Hatley Castle, but with an unexpected change in weather, the couple relocated to the castle’s foyer. The regal room was lit with hundreds of candles, enhancing the ceremony’s intimacy. “We wanted the ambience of the reception to be classic, elegant and romantic with the castle setting…soft candlelight and clean, crisp whites,” says the bride. The couple achieved just this by hosting a sophisticated black-tie affair. Each guest wore black and white and the only hint of color was the bride’s blush dress. Royale and Sean’s destination wedding was everything they had dreamed of.

Eight years ago Bahar and George’s love story began – or at least it did for Bahar. “I met George on my first day of work and that night I told my dad I met an attorney who looked like Robert Redford and I was going to marry him,” recalls Bahar.
When Bahar’s premonition came true, the couple decided to host a destination wedding. They wanted their wedding to symbolize the two of them as a couple. “I don’t think either of us ever envisioned getting married with an ocean view before we met, but somehow as our relationship evolved and as we traveled more, the vision of a beach wedding became our idea of how we wanted it to be,” explains the bride.
