EDITOR'S LETTER
VISION AND
I
Vulnerability
n June, I headed to one of my happiest places – a luxury wedding business summit called Engage!. The summit is meant to bring together the best-of-the-best under one roof to have honest conversation, learn from one another and inspire our industry as a whole. At each Engage! (there have been 17), there is an overarching message that emerges – even though the speakers and individuals attending don’t plan on it. This time it was the message of vulnerability: being vulnerable as business leaders and owners; with the couples who entrust us with their weddings, in our relationships and with each other. One speaker said, “Being vulnerable isn’t being weak. It takes true courage.”
Making dreams come true is ultimately the reason this magazine exists and why wedding planners, photographers, florists etc. do what they do. As cheesy as that may sound, it’s the truth. When you trust someone with your dreams, there is no more vulnerable a place to be. Thank you for trusting us with your vision of what your wedding day should be and for being as vulnerable with us as we are with you. Cheers to your wedding, cheers to the artistry that makes up this exceptional luxury wedding industry and cheers to coming together to make dreams a reality!
So how does this message impact you and your upcoming nuptials? On my way home from the conference, I began to think about it. It actually affects you considerably. You see, we’re all a bit vulnerable when it comes to our wedding day. For example, you must trust the individuals you select to pull off the event you’ve been dreaming of; to show up, and deliver what you discussed, be it with your wedding planner, photographer, florist or even your venue. You’re putting one of the biggest days of your life in the hands of others.
EDITOR’S LETTER
But when we come together in that feeling of vulnerability, trust emerges. A connection is created and, in the end, a collaborative vision comes to fruition in the most special of times – a wedding.

From the standpoint of the vendors you hire, this opens them up to potential criticism of their art. Working alongside individuals who might not take the same care in their craft could reflect poorly on them. They could even face not getting paid for their hard work or losing business to a competitor. From our position as a magazine, we expose ourselves to the same criticism – for people to be disappointed in the way a story turned out or, God forbid, we made a mistake. All of us take this VERY seriously, and the ones who don’t are the very reason we feel exposed to begin with.
Yours truly, Jennifer Stein

COUPLES: what’s your
financial forecast? Advice by Paige Christenberry & Cathleen Ringo with Regions Bank
Before starting your life together and embarking on your happily ever after, it is important to lay down the facts and speak openly about finances, expectations and long-term financial goals. WHERE’S YOUR MONEY AT?
Talk about what your current financial situations are and your individual money styles. Oftentimes a marriage will have one spender and one saver, but you need to know what to expect and how to plan accordingly.
TO PRENUP OR NOT TO PRENUP?
If it’s a fit, a prenup can help take at least some financial surprises out of your marriage. When considering a prenuptial agreement, honesty is the best policy and make sure to consult with a qualified attorney.
INVEST IN YOUR FUTURE
Try to take a businesslike approach to investment planning, even though it’s difficult to separate emotion from money. Try to understand where your spouse’s attitude about spending and saving comes from and take each other’s comfort zones into account.
We’ll help you customize every detail of your day, your way. Weddings.PalaceResorts.com 1.877.725.4933

stress-busting tips By Jennifer Dene, Founder of Mind Body Bride, mindbodybride.com
BREATHE DEEPLY
TEST DRIVE YOUR
Next time you’re feeling anxious or overwhelmed, simply close your eyes and take ten slow, deep breaths. Breathing acts as a natural tranquilizer for the nervous system and will help you think more clearly. Keep this trick in mind as you travel to your destination wedding and before you walk down the aisle.
CATEGORIZE YOUR TO-DO LIST
Step away from the details of wedding planning and take time to organize your to-do list. Start by creating main categories (such as travel, accommodations, invitations, etc.) and then list individual tasks within them. Seeing like-items grouped together will make it easier to focus on completing those to-dos efficiently, on time and with less stress.

WeddingMoon PREVIEW YOUR WEDDINGMOON WITH 2 NIGHTS IN PARADI SE! Certain restrictions apply.
Nothing boosts endorphins and gets you out of your busy bride-brain like a good sweat session. Whether it’s a quick run around the block or hitting up a boxing class, choose an activity that gets your heart pumping and leaves no space for nagging thoughts.
VISUALIZE YOUR BIG DAY
®
Photo courtesy of: Love & Light Photographs
When was the last time you visualized exactly what your big day will look like? The next time anxiety hits, simply close your eyes and picture yourself at your beautiful destination wedding, surrounded by all the people you love. Let gratitude and excitement wash through your body and feel the stress and worry melt away.
TRUST YOUR GUT, THEN LOG OFF
Social media is an amazing source of inspiration, but can also be overwhelming. Once you’ve made a decision, be it the venue, the invitation design or the dress, stop looking at alternatives online. Doing this means you won’t second-guess your opinions and frees up more time to spend on other (relaxing) activities.

Napa Valley LUXURY FOR A NEW GENERATION OF GUESTS WORDS BY JOHN ROARK
THERE’S NO DENYING THE CALIFORNIA WINE COUNTRY was blessed by the
gods with blue skies, gently rolling hills and picture-perfect sunsets. While the more famous areas of Napa Valley draw crowds, you can’t beat the tranquil charm of the town of Calistoga.
A 90-minute drive from the Oakland, Sacramento and San Francisco airports, Calistoga’s treelined streets give you a taste of Wine Country before it became commercialized. You won’t see highways, billboards or chain restaurants. What you will find is a laid-back enclave, authentically quaint storefronts, locals who greet you with “good morning,” and more than 60 wineries. Framed by panoramic vistas, Solage Calistoga Resort offers understated luxury for guests who aren’t looking for stodgy conservatism. The resort’s 89 freestanding retreats artfully balance the organic with the contemporary, warm woods with native stone and beautiful natural light. “Napa Valley generally has a rustic flair due to its long legacy,” says Solage’s General Manager, Marcus Mueller. “Solage interprets this style in a more modern and slightly less formal way, appealing to a younger clientele.” Each bungalow features all the creature comforts, plus two bicycles for exploring the region. Solage’s recently updated Michelin-rated Solbar delivers exceptional dining and, as you would expect, expert sommelier service. Also, the recently updated 20,000 square-foot, full-service Spa Solage is the largest in Napa Valley.

Palm Springs
seemingly barren highway exits for Palm Desert and Palm Springs. Like a true hidden gem, the hustle and bustle of a flourishing community is tucked back toward the hills. Palm Springs has been experiencing a rebirth in recent years. Once Hollywood’s playground, the lavish luxury still exists today. However, more youthful draws (think the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival and the Palm Springs International Film Festival) have begun to transform the area into a trendy destination for younger generations. If you can romanticize the era of the Rat Pack, Marilyn and our “Camelot” presidency, you will fall in love with the Mid-Century vibe turned modern day escape of Rancho Mirage. With a literal bird’s eye view of Palm Springs, Coachella Valley and the San Jacinto Mountains, The Ritz-Carlton, Rancho Mirage is the peak-echelon for a luxury experience. High above the desert floor, The Ritz-Carlton is home to the best steak and seafood fare in the area (coupled with the most spectacular view) at The Edge Steakhouse. His-and-hers activities are abundant in the area. The Spa at The Ritz-Carlton combines a full suite of services with an unforgettable experience. Palm Springs is also famous for its shopping options, making for an easy girl’s day out. A short drive from the property, the boys can let loose with an appointment at the BMW Performance Center. Their expert instructors lead drivers through a number of track and experience options, all of which involve high speeds, high performance vehicles and high levels of adrenaline! North Hollywood’s COOLEST HANGOUT WORDS BY JOHN ROARK
HUMMING WITH UNPRETENTIOUS CASUAL SOPHISTICATION, The Garland
is one of North Hollywood’s rediscovered hot-spots. Named one of the “Top 15 Hotels in Los Angeles” in Conde Nast Traveler’s 2015 Reader’s Choice Awards, this retro-cool boutique hotel is also one of the San Fernando Valley’s hippest wedding and reception locales.
Recognized for film and television actress Beverly Garland, whose husband built the oasis for her, The Garland has been a neighborhood fixture since the 1970s. “It’s the personal touch that counts,” Garland used to say, and it remains the mantra of the hotel to this day. Her son, James Crank, now oversees the property and its recent $20 million redesign. “My goal in the renovation was to bring back Los Angeles in a simpler time,” he says. “I wanted to highlight L.A.’s lost bohemian days of endless sunshine, macramé, pottery and color.”
22
The redesign included the creation of a new wedding and event venue, Beverly Park. This stunning 4,000 square-foot “secret garden” is perfect for weddings and receptions. Towering sycamores, lush foliage, an enchanting fountain and Executive Chef Chris Turano’s locally sourced, unparalleled culinary wizardry will make your event unforgettable. The Garland offers proximity to Hollywood’s most popular attractions without the chaos of an inner-city hotel. Quiet and relaxed, you’re in good hands and close enough to the action for quick jaunts to cool spots. destinationido.com

A visit to The Garland is like stepping back to another era. “The hotel remains recognizable from its 1971 grand opening,” says Crank. “But it’s all grown up, in all the right ways.”

rizona’s first congresswoman and longtime friend of Eleanor Roosevelt, Isabella Greenway, first opened the Arizona Inn as a philanthropic act to help World War I veterans gain employment. Since 1930, the Inn has remained a family-operated property in Tucson and continues to host families visiting the nearby area and university.
A promise for the future in a place called paradise.
The terra cotta exterior of the Inn stands out against the monochromatic desert surroundings and the expertly tended gardens look like a tropical mirage set into the dry landscape. The view of Mount Lemmon will stop you in your tracks and a 90-minute drive will take you there for skiing in the winter months. The property offers several places, both indoor and out, to say your destination “I do’s.” From gardens and spacious ballrooms to fountain backdrops and private patios, the Arizona Inn caters to couples wanting a little sunshine and a relaxed vibe. The rooms are spacious and adorned with classic furniture with a bed and breakfast feel. The property also offers fun little perks like DVD deliveries for the kiddos, sundae happy hour by the pool in the summer and afternoon tea in the winter. If sunshine, warmth and history are what you’re looking for, the Arizona Inn delivers a pretty satisfying trifecta.

PHOENIX WORDS BY JENNIFER STEIN

hat Phoenix lacks in an impressive city skyline, it more than makes up for in interesting properties with character and caliber.
What was once The Ritz-Carlton, Phoenix (with traditional furnishings and artwork) is now The Camby Hotel – an eclectic boutique hotel catering to the sophisticated yet quirky traveler. The rebranding happened in December 2015, when The Camby opened its doors as one of Marriott’s Autograph Collection properties. “Refined revelry is the theme throughout the hotel and décor elements play on the ‘five C’s’ of Arizona – cattle, cotton, climate, copper and citrus,” says Doug McCorkle, the property’s Chief Ideation Officer.
Photos courtesy of: The Camby Hotel
From the romantic “illusion poster beds” with copper canopies in every room to thoughtful touches that are carried out down to the bathmats (which read: clean up your act), The Camby is downright fun. For wedding couples who are looking for something a little out of the norm, but with the high-end sophistication of brands like The Ritz-Carlton or St. Regis, The Camby hits the mark. One major standout is their on-site restaurant, Artizen. Continuing the décor theme of the five C’s of Arizona, you’re welcomed by industrial copper lighting, dark blue walls, cotton throw pillows, citrus artwork and an open-air patio just off the bar that takes full advantage of the (mostly) gorgeous weather Phoenix is known for. Delight your palate from start-to-finish when you order the locally sourced and expertly prepared offerings created by their award-nominated chef, Dushyant Singh. The rooftop pool can be used as the backdrop for weddings, taking advantage of valley views and romantic sunsets. Host some or all of your events at The Camby Hotel as they have diverse meeting space options that are anything but ordinary. “Double take” is part of the property’s philosophy and this hotel definitely earns more than a passing glance.

Get Your “Glamp” On MONTANA
WORDS BY COURTNEY COX
s a lover of both Mother Nature and the finer things in life, I’ve always held a fascination with the “glamping” trend. The Resort at Paws Up, located 35 minutes northeast of Missoula, Montana, was one of the first luxury resorts to embrace the idea of outdoor living. It’s also the perfect place to hold a family-friendly wedding for the nature lovers in your life. If you want to host your event at this glamezon of a rural resort, be aware that Paws Up only hosts elopements or small weddings (20 or less) June through August.
one of five camps. Each camp boasts six safari-style tents and a dedicated chef and butler. If you prefer a traditional roof over your head, there are 28 expansive private homes. If little ones want to sleep under the stars, eight of the homes also come with fully outfitted “backyard” tents. The rates include all meals, airport transfers and even a Kia Soul for use during your stay. When it comes to activities, Paws Up offers all the ranch staples, plus unique options like a petting zoo in the summer and an ice skating rink in the winter.

doesn’t mean you’re missing out. In fact, the staff will roll out the red carpet for you and your entire wedding party. The 37,000-acre ranch is your oyster and the Big Sky is the limit. Paws Up has gone so far as to transport a grand piano into the wilderness and marry a couple on a sandbar in the middle of the Blackfoot River. The Resort at Paws Up is a special place, where abundance meets adventure, and the Meriwether Lewis quote displayed in the Lewis and Clark Reception Barn says it best. You and your guests will be “…much pleased at having arrived at this long wished for spot.”

overs of wine and rolling hills often think of California Wine Country for their destination wedding, but there’s an equally impressive, alternative option. Oregon has emerged into the limelight with world-class craft beer, but it was the Willamette Valley that put the state on the libation map. The 150-mile valley (known for its Pinot Noir) is home to more than 500 wineries and the misty, maritime climate is ideal for cool-weather grapes. In the past, most wine lovers stayed in Portland and made the 45-minute drive for wine-tastings. However, The Allison Inn & Spa opened in the fall of 2009 and brought with it the area’s first

upscale accommodations. The resort can accommodate weddings of up to 150 people. In addition to a vast collection of local wine, The Allison Inn & Spa specializes in exceptional cuisine. For this reason, all receptions are hosted indoors in order to guarantee the best service and food quality. The family-owned resort was originally built as a legacy project for the community and supports local farmers, wineries and artists. Executive Chef Sunny Jin embraces this concept with an extensive Chef’s Garden that is visited and tended by local schools and community members. To sample the Allison’s bounty, enjoy a dinner at JORY and destinationido.com
feast on seasonal veggies like parsnips, acorn squash and Brussels sprouts. Any wine-tasting adventure must include a stop at Stoller Family Estate in the Dundee Hills. When the owner inherited the family farm, he put his viticulture experience to work. The winery’s south facing slopes and native Oak groves create a breathtaking backdrop. We asked Stoller’s Cellar Master, Marcus Mejia, what set the Willamette Valley apart from its California competitor. “We survive off of each other up here. It still has a very small-community feel to it. [Think] world-class Pinot Noir in a farm setting.” It’s the sense of community that makes the Willamette Valley an ideal place for your intimate destination wedding.

Golf Lovers Unite WORDS BY COURTNEY COX

eorgia + golf = Augusta National Golf Club. This is what nearly all golf aficionados will think, but there’s more to Georgia golf than The Masters. Drive 30 minutes northwest and you’ll find the Champions Retreat Golf Club. The club’s concept was born at the 1999 Masters Champions Dinner by none other than Gary Player. He recruited his friends, Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer, to create a 27-hole golf club. What resulted were three, nine-hole courses, each designed by one of the game’s “Big Three” – a feat found nowhere else in the world. In addition to world-class golf, Champions Retreat has 16 cottages and a 10,000 square-
34
foot Party Barn ideal for destination weddings. While the club is members-only, hosting your nuptials here grants you and your guests access to the cottages and all three courses. Each cottage features luxe and cozy décor, fireplaces and large patios complete with comfy rockers. Champions Retreat will play a humble host to any wedding group with its small village feel and location along the banks of the Savannah River. Treat your guests to a traditional oyster shucking at your cottage, but consider the Party Barn for larger gatherings. Unveiled in 2016, the space is the definition of rusticchic and would make a gorgeous setting for any Southern-inspired wedding. You and destinationido.com
your guests can dine beneath chandeliers and dark wood trusses before stepping onto the back porch for a beautiful view of the Bluff course’s ninth hole. The barn can accommodate up to 150 people, but tenting the nearby event lawn can double your guest list to 300. Champions Retreat is known for its themed parties, so consider a fun welcome dinner like a Low Country boil. Non-golf lovers will also feel at home, because it’s meant to feel like a sanctuary rather than a traditional, jaunty golf club. The illustrious Arnold Palmer said, “There is not a better setting for golf in the South,” and there’s no higher praise than that.

trolling along the Rhine embankment promenade through the heart of Düsseldorf, Germany, the contrasts between ancient and new are hard to miss. The cobblestoned streets of Altstadt (Old Town) are home to historical treasures such as the Rathaus (city hall) and the Schlossturm (palace tower), but the area is also known for being “the longest bar in the world” with more than 250 trendy bars, brewery pubs and restaurants. Düsseldorf has recently emerged as a sophisticated fashion capital, with well-known designers adopting it as their home and elegant shopping options that leave nothing to be desired.
40
From vibrant downtown high-rise hotels to palaces and quaint inns, Düsseldorf offers a wide range of destination wedding venues – all within the city limits. If you dream of a fairytale setting, the 200-year-old Benrath Palace, situated on the Rhine River, may be the picture-perfect choice. As you approach the Baroque-style pink palace, you are struck by how it is beautifully mirrored in the reflection pool and embraced by the manicured gardens that surround it. Elegant ballrooms, grand halls and hidden sitting rooms are appointed with intricate parquet floors, silk wall coverings, crystal chandeliers and carefully destinationido.com

In contrast, the ultra-modern Hyatt Regency Düsseldorf boasts magnificent views from almost every vantage point. It is located in a prominent position on the tip of the peninsula and in the heart of the city’s trendy MedienHafen area. A pedestrian bridge connects the property with the opposite side of the river. If you prefer a quaint village atmosphere, hop on the city tram and venture a short way to the historic area of Kaiserswerth, Düsseldorf’s oldest neighborhood. With its medieval ruins, charming Baroque-style houses, cozy cafés and beer gardens, you will feel as though you have been transported to another time. Explore the picturesque ruins of Kaiserpfalz, the legendary Emperor Friedrich
Barbarossa’s Royal Palace (also an amazing backdrop for wedding pictures). A few steps away, discover the charming Hotel MutterHaus, once the site where countless women from around the world were trained as nurses, including Florence Nightingale. When selecting a destination for a wedding away from home, accessibility is key and Düsseldorf is blessed with a modern, convenient airport that serves 190 destinations worldwide. Air Berlin, the second largest airline in Germany, has frequent non-stop flights from several U.S. cities and very competitive fares.

Upon your arrival, it is simple to master Düsseldorf’s public transportation system and you will find many affordable options to accommodate your guests. The Radisson Blu Scandinavia Hotel is located central to the airport and city tram system and would be a great option for hosting your guests for other events including a rehearsal dinner or welcome brunch. Charm and convenience coupled with rich culture and heritage…all in a city where the motto is “visitors become friends.” Destination Düsseldorf has kind of a nice ring to it.

FLORENCE: A STYLISH CAPITAL ESCAPE Known as the birthplace of Italian language and the Renaissance, Florence makes a fitting urban oasis to usher in the birth of your new life together. Filled with glorious art and architecture, the city abounds with world-renowned museums like the Uffizi Gallery, home of Botticelli’s The Birth of Venus and The Galleria dell’Accademia, displaying Michelangelo’s David. As for accommodations, there is the 18th century palazzo, Relais Santa Croce, now a Relais & Châteaux and Baglioni Hotels property. During your stay, be sure to stroll over the Ponte Vecchio, a small bridge arching over the Arno River. Explore the city’s shops selling leather goods and jewelry, and savor regional specialties, including saffron risotto and rich red Super Tuscan. Saluti! VENICE: A MAGICAL WATER WONDERLAND For a floating fairytale of a honeymoon, the city of Venice rivals no other. Built on a 118-island archipelago, this noble Italian port feels frozen in time with no cars or skyscrapers, just miles of spired buildings, palaces and foot bridges. Take a water taxi from the Stazione di Venezia Santa Lucia (train station) to Baglioni Hotel Luna, steps from Piazza San Marco and surrounded by the city’s top shops. Try to book the San Giorgio Terrace Suite, which has its own private terrace overlooking the Grand Canal. In addition to arranging for a private gondola ride, the hotel can coordinate a day on the island of Murano, where you can peruse an assortment of glass shops to find such keepsakes as a dozen swirled, crystal Champagne flutes. Speaking of flutes, be sure to visit the original Harry’s Bar. Visited by kings and queens and featured in Ernest Hemmingway’s Across the River and into the Trees, it is located only minutes from the hotel and is where the famous Bellini (Prosecco blended with white peach puree) was invented. Back at the hotel, share an intimate candlelit, rooftop dinner of Venetian specialties, like cuttlefish risotto and tiramisu, where you can raise a toast to your love under a tapestry of shimmering stars. William Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet is one of the most romantic stories ever written about an Italian couple. However, by honeymooning Italian-style, you and your mate can create your own passionate tale of never-ending love. destinationido.com

IN LOS CABOS WORDS BY HARMONY WALTON
os Cabos, Mexico is abuzz with talk of Hollywood elite touching down to the chic new beachfront property by Thompson Hotels, The Cape. The first of its kind in Mexico for the brand, the seductive, contemporary resort boasts, among other things, infinity and salt water pools overlooking the bay and famous El Arco, where the Sea of Cortez meets the Pacific Ocean. With all oceanfront rooms, your guests will feel like VIPs, regardless of celebrity status. Copper-finished tubs, swinging daybeds on the balconies and suites with private plunge pools complete the image. Masculine modern décor is peppered with local artisanal accents, including handmade tiles below your toes. This sexy new destination wedding spot is perfect for a sophisticated (and sand-free) beachfront “I do” as you exchange vows perched above the ocean. Just two hours from Los Angeles, touch down and check in to The Cape’s signature Surfer Villa, a perfect place to celebrate for thirty or so guests, complete with its own plunge pool, two stories of living space, private sauna, kitchen and expansive patio for a ceremony or stunning dinner at sunset. For an equally dramatic backdrop (and many more guests), set your nuptials looking out at El Arco from the infinity pool deck before whisking your loved ones off to one of the Thompson’s signature rooftop spaces where you’ll enjoy an al fresco reception overlooking Los Cabos from high in the sky. Eloping? What better than an open-air spa villa and romantic dinner for two with total privacy from the outside world?
MEXICO
No matter where you celebrate on property, you’ll enjoy the natural soundtrack of waves crashing against the rocks below and an eclectic cuisine paired with inventive craft cocktails from the award-winning resident mixologist, Osvaldo Vazquez. Executive Chef Enrique Olvera describes the menu: “It reflects the feel of The Cape, a mix of modern elements and casual Baja-style. Think housemade tortillas, fresh, locally sourced seafood and craft beer brewed right here in Baja.”

The menu is inventive, the view is spectacular, but the best part about checking into The Cape? The people. The resort may be new, but each staff member will feel like an old friend long before you and your wedding guests check out. destinationido.com

liding across tranquil Balandra Bay in La Paz, Mexico, you first notice the colorful beauty of your surroundings. Desert brown hills dotted with vibrant green cacti envelop white sandy stretches and glassy waters. Then you notice you’re only sharing that ombré bay and a smattering of thatched palapas on the sand with a few other kayakers. When you make the trek out to the region’s trademark Mushroom Rock, you get the perfect selfie without having to wait for a busload of sightseers to clear out. Offering practically private slices of paradise, like Balandra as well as other tourist magnets like a brand new whale museum, Baja California Sur’s capital, La Paz, still offers a vintage vibe. Imagine lazy afternoon walks along the sculpture-filled beachfront promenade, a cathedral-anchored town square and plenty of premium fish taco purveyors. Be sure to try the fresh ray! Perhaps the two-and-a-half hour drive from the Cabo airport through curvy mountain passes makes maintaining authenticity and staving off overcrowding a little easier. The extra effort often translates to more bang for your pesos. For example, CostaBaja Resort & Spa will include transportation with four-night bookings. However, don’t confuse affordable with ordinary. Throwing a wedding or staying at the 150-room CostaBaja will never feel like a sacrifice. Splurge on a suite with a tub on the patio (complimentary on the wedding night), the breakfast buffet and the spa’s signature Damiana Ritual, a treatment utilizing native flowers and ancestral techniques. While away the daylight lounging by the pool, hitting the lively beach club bar or giving

new meaning to foreplay on the country’s only Gary Player Signature golf course. Then settle in to a wood-grilled steak and guided tequila tasting from a 400-label collection at Steinbeck’s, which can also cater your event. Ceremonies at CostaBaja are most often held on the private beach using simple wood and white décor the hotel has on hand, but the on-site wedding planner can help coordinate more ornate rentals or shipments from the States. Receptions can be held at a variety of spaces including the modern, desert chic Golf Club House, a more traditional ballroom or on the patio that overlooks the marina and the mountains. Whether you’re in La Paz to get hitched or honeymoon, jump on a Fun Baja boat, which conveniently leaves from the dock, to explore what Jacques Cousteau dubbed “the aquarium of the world.” Some Sea of Cortez sails are seasonally dependent, like whale watching or swimming with whale sharks, but diving or snorkeling around a colony of sea lions provides year-round entertainment. After the underwater acrobatics show, the catch of the day is served on Espíritu Santo Island’s protected shores. The perfect outing concludes with a few hours to hike, paddleboard, swim or kayak around the serene cove. Thanks to the friendly faces, picturesque surroundings, abundant wildlife, throwback feel and luxurious lodging, it is easy to be at peace in La Paz, making it one of the most appropriately named cities in Mexico.

Couples might choose to elope for a number of reasons, but a common thread is the desire for logistical simplicity. While there might not be guests to accommodate and a large event to plan, eloping comes with its own unique set of questions. We’ve asked five experts to aid in your quest for simplification. WEDDING & EVENT PLANNER Elegant Occasions by JoAnn Gregoli DID: Would you recommend couples hire a wedding planner if they are doing an elopement? JG: Yes, I would highly recommend they hire a planner to prearrange the actual ceremony and then plan a private dinner celebration. A planner can help hire the best vendors to provide photography and video and organize a romantic dinner for two. Once the ceremony concludes and they return home, they want to show their family and friends their wedding ceremony, so having photography and video documentation is important. DID: If a couple is eloping, can they still opt for all the traditional trimmings of a larger wedding (i.e. wedding cake, floral arrangements)? JG: Absolutely. I did a recent elopement in Napa complete with a wedding cake, a Champagne toast, a floral bouquet and candles – plus a wonderful private dinner prepared by a personal chef. We even hired an antique car to drive the couple around Napa to take wedding pictures.
WEDDING & ELOPEMENT PHOTOGRAPHER Shannon Elizabeth Photography DID: Elopements are generally shorter and much more simple than traditional weddings. Should couples pay less for their photographer if they’re eloping? SE: You get what you pay for, right? If you want amazing photographs and you are already going the extra mile (literally) to elope in a beautiful destination, then why not choose a photographer that you know you’ll love and trust on one of the most important days

of your life? There are so many ways to cut down on a budget when it comes to weddings, but photography should never be one of them. DID: If a couple gets married away and then hosts a hometown reception, would you recommend they book the same photographer for both events? SE: 100% YES! Not only is a connection already established with the photographer and couple, but it brings the photographs full circle and tells a more complete story. Plus, there’s the added fact that the photographs will all have a similar style and look, which if you have OCD like me, can’t hurt!
TRAVEL EXPERT The Honeymoonist – Susan Moynihan DID: For couples that opt to elope, would you recommend they wrap their honeymoon into the same trip or should they say “I do” in one place and honeymoon in another? SM: The great thing about eloping is that it’s just the two of you, uniting and celebrating in your own unique style. Personally, I look at the wedding and the honeymoon as two separate events, so in my world, I would do the elopement in one place and then move to a new place for the honeymoon. It’s all about the two of you taking time out of your lives to fully commit to each other and then to have some time to bask in the glow of that connection before you return to the real word. DID: Sometimes resorts offer perks for couples hosting their wedding on-site. Does the same hold true for elopements? SM: All-inclusive resorts are known for offering special incentives for weddings, but if it’s just the two of you for a short stay, you may not find as many packages and perks. Whether you’re eloping or booking a honeymoon package, read the fine print carefully. That’s the job of a good travel or wedding planner – to act as your advocate, help you decipher the details and make sure you’re truly getting a great value, instead of one that just looks good online!
REAL-LIFE BRIDE ASK THE EXPERT

DID: What were the logistics of planning an elopement like? Do you feel it was significantly less stressful than planning a destination or hometown wedding?
destinationido.com
RB: Our elopement was in a foreign country, but it was certainly less stressful not having to worry about guests: which dates work for which people, how much it would cost them, logistics of getting them to a rural venue in a foreign country, accommodations, etc.. It’s refreshing to be able to focus on each other, which is really what it’s all about. DID: What resources did you use to help you pull off your dream event? A traditional wedding planner, online resources, etc.? RB: We were already familiar with France, so initially we were going to try and see what we could accomplish on our own. After a while, we decided that given how busy we were with our jobs, bringing in a French wedding planner would be convenient given the time commitment necessary to sort out the details, plus factors like significant time zone differences, having to work out back and forth negotiations, and legwork that simply required eyes on the ground in France.
FASHION EXPERT Beth Chapman, Stylist/Owner of The White Dress by the shore DID: Is it still appropriate to have a large, formal gown for an elopement or should it be more understated like the event? BC: I generally recommend that the level of formality of the gown mirror that of the event. That being said, that does not mean you can’t do a ball gown for an elopement. If a princess silhouette is what is the most flattering for you and reflects the vision you have for your wedding, then by all means go for it! I might recommend a ball gown in a soft, lightweight fabric, like tulle or organza, so it is not as formal and easier to travel with. DID: In terms of accessories, can a couple still go all-out for an elopement, i.e. veil, bouquet etc.? BC: Whether your wedding is an intimate elopement or a grand soiree for 500 guests, it is still your wedding. I think a veil and bouquet are always appropriate for a bride regardless of the size of the event. They are traditional elements that make a bride, a bride!

ADVENTURES IN ETIQUETTE
WORDS BY ELAINE HILBELINK
Q
My fiancé and I started planning a large hometown wedding, but quickly realized it was not for us. Our families are set on the idea, so we’ve decided to elope. We’re nervous to tell our loved ones. What is the best way to communicate our decision and avoid issues? Do we need to tell everyone individually and in person or can we send out a formal announcement?
A
One of the most formidable challenges in eloping is risking the feelings of family and close friends… particularly parents! If you decide to elope, have a personal conversation with those closest to you immediately after the ceremony, specifically parents, siblings and closest friends. Some people choose to include parents in the actual ceremony – if they can be trusted with the secret!
ADVENTURES IN ETIQUETTE
Even though elopements are often informal, avoid sending something as casual as a group email as it will certainly offend those not included. Sending a wedding announcement after the occasion is an appropriate way to notify those in your broader circle of family and friends.

However, if you choose to do a traditional elopement, your family members may wish to throw an at-home reception or less formal party for you. This could be a solution to ensure they feel included in your marriage without all of the planning that is involved in a traditional wedding.
NAVIGATING ELOPEMENTS, VOW RENEWALS AND MORE
Q
My husband and I love to travel, so we’ve decided to renew our vows in Hawaii for our tenth wedding anniversary. We want our family and friends to attend, but a lot of them may not be able to. How can we explain our desire to have them there without them feeling obligated to come?
A
It sounds as if you have already verbally mentioned your intentions to some family and friends and received feedback about your vow renewal. Limited vacation time and finances can be a constraint on some of those close to you. If this is something you and your husband want to do, then proceed with your plans. You could send a written invitation to those you wish to include, with the disclaimer that you certainly understand if the travel would not fit in their schedules.
Q
Instead of inviting our large extended families, my fiancé and I have decided to invite only a few close friends to our destination wedding. What is the best way to explain our decision to our families without hurting their feelings?
A
It is important to involve your parents in the discussion of how to best keep harmony in your respective families if you choose not to include them in the destination ceremony. An at-home reception, planned shortly after your ceremony, is certainly a common option that many choose as a way to include those not participating in the destination wedding. This can be as formal or informal as you would choose to make it, and will help family members feel as if they are an important part of celebrating your marriage.
Q
My sister and best friend have been looking forward to being in my bridal party for years. I was in both of their weddings, but have decided to forgo having a bridal party at my own wedding. I am worried they are going to be hurt and disappointed. What is the best way to break the news?
A
While we’ve decided to get married away with just the two of us, my fiancé and I still want to celebrate with our friends and family after we are back. What is the protocol for planning a hometown reception when no one was invited to the wedding?
A
It is entirely normal to want to celebrate with your family and friends after a private ceremony. This after-party or reception can take on whatever form you wish. An announcement of your wedding can be sent with a written invitation to the reception or party. If it is more formal, you may wish to wear your wedding dress and have a theme related to your wedding destination. You might have pictures of your ceremony available at the party for those who want to see where you exchanged your vows. If it is a less formal event, it can be a dinner hosted by one of the families, a “sip and see” party, a barbeque in the park or on the beach…whatever is comfortable for your family and budget.
Q
My fiancé and I plan to elope, so I’m not sure what to do when it comes to registering for gifts. Should we still register and should we mention it on our wedding announcement?
A
It is certainly permissible to create a gift registry, since those close to you will probably want to give you a gift. A wedding announcement should not include registry information, since that would send a message that a gift is expected. Make sure your close friends and family know where you are registered so the information can be shared by word-of-mouth to those who inquire.
Q
I’ve always known I didn’t want a big wedding, but I would still like to have a bridal shower. Is it OK to ask my mom or best friend to throw me a shower when neither of them are invited to the wedding?
A
Those invited to a bridal shower are typically invited to the wedding. If your mom and best friend were not invited to your wedding, it would be inappropriate of you to ask them to host a shower. If you want to create a bridal registry for those that inquire about giving you a gift, that would be acceptable, but you should not have the expectation of receiving gifts if you don’t want to include those people in your wedding.

GUEST BOOK
To celebrate reaching a major relationship milestone (their ten-year anniversary), Rob and Jill opted to host a destination vow renewal event in Los Cabos, Mexico. Jill, who has a passion for party planning, organized a weekend of events for 50 friends and family, as well as the couple’s three young children. Guests were treated to a “welcome” party with sushi and margaritas, a sunset sail, a “white night” rehearsal dinner with flaming Mexican coffee and loads of Mexican performers, and a post-ceremony brunch. “We wanted it to be a weekend of nonstop celebration and for each event to feel distinct,” says Jill. The couple was so successful in pulling off the event of their dreams, that we’ve asked them to share their story and advice with you.
64
DID: Why did you choose to do a destination vow renewal? BRIDE: When we got married, we had a beautiful church ceremony and a ballroom reception, but as we got older, we started to attend many more destination weddings and loved the idea of smaller groups spending several days together. In that way, guests are really able to relax and get to know one another. Given our love of the One&Only Palmilla, and my love of party planning, it was the perfect recipe for a destination vow renewal! DID: How did your family and friends respond to the decision? BRIDE: Many of our friends have gotten married by now and there are fewer weddings to attend, so our friends and family were very excited. Everyone loves an excuse to celebrate, and even better, an excuse to take a vacation. With the countless hours of planning we did, we never could have planned for the group to bond and come together the way they did. It really was priceless. DID: How and why did you choose your location and destination?
FALL & WINTER 2016
GUEST BOOK
BRIDE: My husband asked me, “If you could pick any place in the world to host this celebration, where would it be? I immediately thought of One&Only Palmilla. I knew they had the resources to organize events with a high level of attention to detail and we wanted to be on the ocean in the sun. of the events on the property, but it never felt boring because there were so many venues to choose from. I also initially considered Paris, but it is so far away from Los Angeles. Many of our friends took breaks from busy work lives and children for this trip, so I didn’t want people to have a long flight. DID: Was planning a destination vow renewal easy? BRIDE: It wasn’t easy, but it was a lot of fun because I absolutely love planning parties! The most stressful part was Mother Nature. Cabo was hit by a devastating hurricane about seven months before our vow renewal. The entire resort shut down for a massive renovation. For a long time, we considered back up plans, but by the miraculous effort of the Palmilla staff, the resort reopened two weeks before our vow renewal and everyone agreed that it was better than ever! DID: What was your favorite moment on the big day and what advice would you offer other couples planning a wedding event abroad? BRIDE: We had so many favorite moments, but it would have to be the private fireworks show at the end of dinner. No one knew it was coming and we timed the first firework to go off at the end of Rob’s toast in front of the dinner canopy. We even played our favorite song by Panama that coordinated with the timing of the fireworks. The guests were so surprised and I’m pretty sure it was everyone’s favorite moment.
GUEST BOOK
In terms of advice, embrace the planning, but don’t dwell on every little decision or you will become overwhelmed. Remember that it isn’t so much about what other people want, but about the two of you as a couple. It’s your vision alone.

y husband and I began our vow renewal celebration on the island of Maui riding to The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua in a convertible in the dark of night and under a canopy of luminous stars. The air was delicious and the trees welcoming. Aromatic leis, lush flora and a warm “aloha” greeting welcomed us to the resort.
Fairmont Kea Lani
Life at The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua feels like a gentle Hawaiian breeze. If you are lucky enough to stay at one of the gracious 463 guestrooms or suites, you will enjoy access to a variety of signature restaurants, the secluded D.T. Fleming Beach, an expansive threetiered pool and the inviting 17,500 square-foot spa. Highlights of our stay included swimming with sea turtles and seeing a kaleidoscope of colors during Jean-Michel Cousteau’s Ambassadors of the Environment Cities Under the Sea program, and hitting the links amidst a 22,000-acre historic pineapple plantation on Kapalua’s Plantation and Bay courses. A favorite spot to renew vows at sunset is Lava Point, a sea-bearing cliff with spectacular views.
The resort offers formal spaces to renew your vows under a gazebo or in front of illuminated fountains. There are also many spots for renewal including the 9,000 square-foot Willow Stream Spa and three 24-hour swimming pools. Foodies will adore the myriad of dining selections including Kō, featuring Hawaii’s plantation era-inspired cuisine, and Nick’s Fishmarket Maui – serving up delectable fish selections paired with a 2,000-bottle wine cellar.
Fairmont Kea Lani
Our last stop was Andaz Maui at Wailea Resort, a sophisticated oasis on the white sands of Mokapu Beach. Each of the 297 guestrooms and seven villas are brilliantly outfitted to feng shui your soul. I enjoyed soaking up the sun at the three-tired infinity pool, dining al fresco at Ka’ana Kitchen and creating a custom oil blend at the ‘Āwili Spa. The resort also offers an over-the-top private cabana dining experience for couples who wish to celebrate in high style. Whether you are planning your wedding, dreaming about your honeymoon or renewing your vows, you will discover the essence of aloha perfuming the air in Maui. Mahalo for the memories!

Next we drove to Wailea, the island’s sunny southwest shore, and a giant rainbow streamed across the sky. We arrived at the Fairmont Kea Lani, Hawaii’s only all-suite and villa oceanfront resort featuring 413 one-bedroom spacious suites and 37 luxurious two and threebedroom villas. We learned the art of paddling and the significance of the blowing of the Pū (conch shell) on an outrigger canoe trip. icaragua is getting lots of buzz of late, and with good reason. It has the same attractions as its more famous neighbor, Costa Rica. Think volcanoes, eco-adventure and miles of Pacific coastline, but less traveled, so Nicaragua feels off the beaten path (and also offers great value). The country recently opened a new airport on the southern coast, Costa Esmeralda. This Pacific region is home to surf breaks and a cool boutique hotel scene that’s ideal for honeymooners looking for something different. Here are three of my favorites.
LUXE LIFE: MUKUL BEACH, GOLF AND SPA This 37-room hotel put Nicaragua on the luxury map when it opened in 2014 near the popular surf town of San Juan del Sur. Families love the two-bedroom beachfront villas, which have their own pools. But
honeymooners are better served by the sexy Bohios: stand-alone rooms set on the bluff for more privacy and optimum views from the plunge pool. Floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors embrace the vistas and open to a wide terrace. The in-room rum amenity allows you to taste owner Carlos Pellas Chamorro’s other passion; he’s the man behind Flor de Caña, the country’s top rum. Down by the beach you’ll find a sleek, scalloped pool and two restaurants – La Terraza and the more formal La Mesa, which showcase Nicaraguan-inspired global cuisine. But the real star is Manzanillo Beach, which stretches for more than a mile and has a beach club offering kayaking, SUP and surf lessons from TropicSurf. Crave something quieter? Shuttle over to Guacalito de la Isla, a perfectly deserted cove where the only amenities are a

few thatched palapas with chaise lounges. Whatever you do, don’t miss time at the spa. In lieu of standard treatment rooms, each salon has its own theme and amenities, from a Turkish-style hammam to a plunge pool overlooking the Pacific.
HACIENDA STYLE: RANCHO SANTANA Set in the Pacific-facing hills midway between Managua and the Costa Rica border, this expat residential community added the charming 17-room Inn in March 2015, ideal for shorter stays or visitors who don’t want to rent an entire home. The two-story Inn has an old-world hacienda vibe, with wood-beamed ceilings, tile floors, local art and furnishings made on-site from local materials. It also serves as the social heart of the ranch and is home to the main restaurant and bar, as well as an art gallery and small pool with a bar, all set shoreside on stunning Playa Santana. Of course, you can also rent one of the luxury homes, which range from beachfront condos to elaborate multi-bedroom enclaves with full kitchens, open-air living rooms and swimming pools – all set high
in the hills for an optimum breeze and view. (The latter are ideal for destination weddings.) Rancho Santana spans 2,700 acres, so you’ll need a car to get around; in fact, the ranch requires 4x4s for guests renting homes. Explore the ranch’s five gorgeous beaches, as well as restaurants like groovy La Taqueria, with an open-air kitchen set on a beachside deck at Playa Los Perros. Surf lessons are a natural here (neighboring Popoyo is one of Nicaragua’s top breaks), as are nature hikes. Befitting a ranch, Santana has a fantastic stable; riding a horse along the hard-packed sand of Playa Santana is a must.
ISLAND FIND: JICARO ISLAND ECOLODGE Just a 15-minute boat ride from the historic city of Granada, in the collection of small isles that dot Lake Nicaragua, is the gumdrop islet of Jicaro. A member of the Cayuga Collection (which operates seven sustainable hotels in neighboring Costa Rica), this private-island lodge is eco in practice, but not experience. The

vibe is Swiss Family Robinson, with just nine two-story casitas set around the isle’s perimeter. They feel more like treehouses, with upper-level lofts, mosquito-netted king beds and downstairs living areas that open to a hammock-stocked porch. Being eco, there are no TVs and no A/C – the breezes keep you cool and the sounds of birds provide your entertainment. The bi-level pool and bar is where guests gather to sun, swim and share the day’s adventures. The open-air restaurant is superlative, with tasty multi-course menus using ingredients supplied by local farmers and producers – many trained in sustainable agricultural practices by the Cayuga Collection.
THE 411 Nicaragua is in the heart of Central America, so prep for heat any time of year. Rainy season runs from May to October; expect higher humidity, daily showers and discounted hotel rates.

Activities range from easy (kayaking around the surrounding islands) to adventurous (zip-lining and hiking on a nearby volcano), and Granada is just 15 minutes away if you want to shop or dine. That being said, you may be tempted to just stay put – and with a setting this relaxing, who could blame you?

PERU:
Mother Nature’s Masterpiece WORDS BY COURTNEY COX Cusco
y earliest memory of the now ever-persistent travel itch takes me back to seventh grade geography in which a poster of Machu Picchu decorated the classroom wall (#NerdAlert). Since then, the ancient Incan citadel has sat atop my “must-see mountain.” Fast-forward 16 years and, as an exultant editor of DID, the Peruvian invitation I had been waiting for, finally crossed my desk.

My humble hosts, Mountain Lodges of Peru, have been offering a different take on treks to Machu Picchu for over ten years. Instead of following the famed Inca Trail beginning in Km82 and camping every night, MLP’s treks focus on cultural immersion via a less-traveled route through the Andes Mountains. At the end of each day, hikers kick-up their feet at a MLP-exclusive lodge. I signed up for the five-day Lares Adventure, a new addition to the MLP’s line-up and less grueling than the seven-day, established Salkantay Trek. The Lares Adventure allows for flexibility depending on your interests or physical stamina, making it a great option for honeymoon couples. Hikes range from 90 minutes to eight hours, but all culminate in a solid night’s rest at a comfortable lodge. After reading through the helpful materials MLP sent me in advance, it was time to make my childhood dream a reality. After an hour flight from Lima to Cusco, I finally planted my feet on Peruvian soil in the ancient capital of the Inca Empire. I broke in my hiking shoes exploring the city’s cathedrals and public markets, and reinforced my caloric reserve with local beer and empanadas at Inka

Grill and fresh ceviche and pisco sours at LIMO – both of which are conveniently located off the main square. El Mercado, a boutique hotel owned by the same folks as MLP, is a great home base with comfy beds and an inviting center courtyard, complete with a fire pit and live music. Starting at 12,980 feet, and after a 90-minute drive from Cusco, my group set off into the clouds for our first hike. Rounding a rocky bend and most definitely out of breath, I was surprised to see a very external struggle – woman vs. donkey. As it turns out, this local spit-fire (the woman, not the donkey) was to be our guide up the trail and into the mouth of the Sacred Valley. After a lunch consisting of smoked meats and six different kinds of potatoes (my kind of meal!), we made our way to the archeological ruins at Pisaq. Arriving at the site in late afternoon, we found it empty and under the halo of the setting sun. Determined to the end, I climbed what would be the first of many steep, stone staircases (aka Inca elevators) and was rewarded with a sweeping view of stone terraces dating back to the 15th century.
village of Patacancha. While a hike of this difficulty might sound unbearable, it’s a must for experiencing this country as it’s meant to be seen. There’s no need to keep your eyes on the road when walking – you’re free to let your senses wander and take in the surrounding natural beauty. Five hours in, and after climbing to the highest point (14,600’) en route to Ipsaycocha Lake, I was overcome with mixed emotion. With a rapidly thumping heart and watering eyes, I felt immense relief at having accomplished something I imagined to be impossible. What better way to bond with your new spouse than by pushing yourselves to the limit and supporting each other to the other side? The remainder of the trip followed a similar, fabulous formula. Hours spent walking through breathtaking (no pun intended) scenery, getting to know Quechua-speaking locals and exploring some of the most impressive and best-preserved Inca archeological sites. These included Ancasmarca; circular storage structures spilling down the side of a mountain like honeycomb, Ollantaytambo; a temple of religious significance and an amazing example of Inca city planning, Machu Picchu (of course) and many others.

HANGZHOU, CHINA: The Other City of Love WORDS BY JUDY KOUTSKY
HONEYMOON HIDEAWAYS
ou’ve probably heard of Beijing, home to the Great Wall of China, or Shanghai, the modern metropolis that rivals New York in terms of world-class shopping and top-notch restaurants, but Hangzhou is the sleepy little sister – she’s beautiful, tranquil and flies under the radar. Until now. Recently ranked as one of the top destinations to visit, Hangzhou is the place for a true, off-thebeaten-path honeymoon. “Plus, compared to many other romantic destinations, the value cannot be beat,” says Ken Pringle, Director of Reservations Sales at Avanti Destinations. Here is what you need to know to plan a honeymoon in Hangzhou.
82
Play: “Hangzhou is considered the ‘Love Capital’ of China, not only because of its natural beauty like the UNESCO World Heritage Site West Lake, but it is also steeped in history and legends of love,” says Helen Clausen, Owner of AsiaLuxe Holidays. For the ultimate love story, make sure to see the evening performance of “Impression West Lake,” which is a light, music, dance and theater extravaganza that takes place on the waters of West Lake. It’s produced by the famed Zhang Yimou, who created the opening and closing ceremonies at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. Another must is a romantic boat ride on the Grand Canal, the world’s oldest and longest canal that spreads 1,200 miles from Hangzhou to Beijing. You and your mate can snuggle up on your own private tour while viewing ancient pagodas in the distance and watching local Chinese life on the banks. destinationido.com

For the best honeymoon souvenir, head to Hangzhou’s Xiling Seal Engravers’ Society. China has a long tradition of calligraphy, dating back to ancient times, and you’ll learn the craft by engraving your name (or symbol of love) on your own bronze tablet. Of course, you can’t come to China and not visit a pagoda, a true masterpiece of architecture. For one of the most magnificent, head to the Six Harmonies Pagoda, which towers at almost 200 feet tall. Not only will you get amazing exercise walking to the top, but you’ll get the most gorgeous 360-degree views of the Qiantang River. Another beautiful architectural site worth seeing is the Lingyin Temple, one of the oldest Buddhist temples in China. “Hangzhou is a big city with lots to do, but it doesn’t feel crowded like many of the other big cities in China,” notes David Kartagener, President of Kartagener Associates Inc. Having said that, it’s still China, the most populous country in the world, so definitely expect lots of people wherever you go.
Shangri-La Hotel, Hangzhou
For an early-morning excursion, take part in one of the most cherished rituals in all of China – the tea ceremony. Head to Longjing Imperial Tea Garden in Hangzhou’s Longjing Village. You’ll walk through beautiful tea terraces, learn the history and sip various brews in a traditional teahouse. To end your trip, take a leisurely boat ride through Xixi National Wetland Park, the only national wetland park in China. You’ll see the beauty of nature in the blanket of trees – plum, bamboo, hibiscus, and persimmon – that sweep through the area. Birdwatching is amazing there, and if you’re lucky enough to visit in June, the wetland is the site of one of the largest dragon boat festivals in China. FALL & WINTER 2016

Stay: If you’re looking for luxury (and who isn’t on their honeymoon?), it’s hard to beat the Four Seasons Hotel Hangzhou at West Lake (which offers an amazing spa, plus an infinity pool which overlooks West Lake). Another good option is the Shangri-La Hotel, Hangzhou, which offers great dining. Be sure to eat at the Shang Palace, which offers plenty of Hangzhou culinary specialties.

BELIZE WORDS BY CARRIE BELL
oneymooning in Belize is not for the faint of heart. Just getting to the country’s largest island, Ambergris Caye, requires a two-hour flight from Houston or Miami, navigating a quaint airport and climbing (literally!) aboard a teeny-tiny plane filled with what feels like hooptie car seats for a quick 15 minutes before taking a car and boat shuttle. Of course, that’s kind of the point. Belize is for couples who prefer to mix relaxation with a rush of blood to the head and newlyweds who want to swim with sharks at the world’s second largest barrier reef, scale Mayan ruins, zipline and bike unmarked, unpaved roads to discover hidden beaches. Folks who would let out squeals of delight rather than cries for help if they opened their door at Las Terrazas Resort to find a four-foot iguana outside. Even the fairly common vacation activity of taking a cooking class gets an injection of adrenaline at the 37-room property. Chef Papy will have you rolling venomous lionfish sushi in your kitchenette. Much of the country remains wild and Mother Nature can be fickle, forcing you to be flexible in planning activities like cave tubing at Ian Anderson’s Caves Branch or helicoptering over the awe-inspiring Great Blue Hole. Taking cover under a tarp for some of your jungle cruise with SEAduced By Belize tours becomes part of the fun and damp unmentionables are worth the rewards of homemade juice and Johnnycakes (a local delicacy) in Bomba Village or a meeting with a very friendly spider monkey. When you’ve had enough adventure, return to your expansive and well air-conditioned (a godsend for any sub-tropical climate) suite. More sun relief can be had by sipping the property’s signature Tiffany blue frozen cocktail from a partially submerged chaise at the pool, hitting the private beach or by asking Leroy, a legend on TripAdvisor, to clamber up a palm and machete you a fresh coconut. When truly ready to indulge, sign up for matching massages at the on-site spa or sip and snack on Caye-crafted rums and chocolate in the open-air lobby. Then feast on O Restaurant’s steak and seafood risotto. Even better, splurge on various dining a deux options that the staff can arrange on O’s romantic rooftop, the shore or a secluded sandbar, perfect for a private picnic followed by kayaking and paddleboarding in a translucent bay. Whether you choose to partake in a string of dauntless escapades or some simple post-wedding recuperating, you better “Belize” this Central American country has you covered on both accounts. ost couples who choose to marry away pick a location with emotional ties or sentimental memories. Hee Sun and Simon took a practical approach in opting to say “I do” on Hawaii’s Big Island. With their loved ones split between New Zealand and South Korea, the New Yorkers had a tough decision to make. destinationido.com
“We felt hosting a destination wedding in Hawaii sounded like a good way to ensure the wedding was at a closer distance to our families,” says the couple. Not surprisingly, the couple soon discovered that Hawaii had much more to offer than just convenience. “We had decided on Hawaii for a few reasons: location, scenery and weather.” The couple was so confident in their choice that they decided on both Hawaii and the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai in Kailua-Kona without ever visiting. The couple catered to their families when it came to location, so it’s no surprise they also kept their loved ones in mind when it came to the guest list.
The couple’s strategy of keeping their wedding simple, intimate and elegant paid off in spades.

“We decided to limit our wedding guests to close family only,” says Hee Sun. “Simon’s family was happy because it was a chance for the whole family to be together since they all live throughout the world.” The couple’s strategy of keeping their wedding simple, intimate and elegant paid off in spades. In the end, the couple treated their nine guests to a meaningful ceremony next to the sea and a refined dinner beneath a crisp, white canopy.
REAL-LIFE WEDDINGS
When we asked the bride to describe the ceremony, it’s clear it was a scene she will forever cherish. “The altar was located between two tall palm trees and was covered with white orchids, lilies and roses. During the ceremony we exchanged a white rose as a symbol of love. It was a sunny day, the wind was blowing slightly and we could smell the sea.”

oby and Rosanna wanted to create an unforgettable event for their loved ones and the bride’s native Colombia was the perfect setting for the party of a lifetime. As for the wedding location, the couple picked one of the country’s most historic cities. “We traveled to [Cartagena] to make sure it was what we were looking for and to get a feel for how our guests would like their visit to the city,” says the couple. “It is the most beautiful city in Colombia and perfect for romance. Nothing about Roby and Rosanna’s wedding was less than spectacular; from the ceremony in a 17th century church to the ninehour reception complete with three bands and a fireworks display. The traditional Catholic ceremony was performed in front of 150 guests in what the couple called “a classically romantic setting.” For the reception, the wedding party moved to the 17th century chapel at the Hotel Sofitel Legend Santa Clara Cartagena. In case the historic interior wasn’t dramatic enough, the couple imported a dozen crystal chandeliers to make the setting “wonderfully sparkly.”
91
The finale of the night was a traditional Colombian crazy hour or “hora loca.” Dancers in Carnival costumes rushed the floor and the party raged on well into the morning. When asked what they found most memorable, the couple said, “We find it impossible to pick one specific moment. The whole wedding was over-thetop and every moment was special. We enjoyed our day from the beginning to the end.”

Roby and Rosanna surprised their guests at midnight when a famous Colombian band took the stage. “People swarmed the stage with camera phones and even the hotel staff crammed into the chapel,” says the bride. “Honestly, I don’t think anyone was running the hotel for an hour.”

For Anneka, the five minutes she and Sean took to themselves after the ceremony is a lasting memory. “It was incredibly special to share that moment and realize we would be spending the rest of our lives together.”

LA JOLLA Andrea+Travis Words by: Sydney Bowen Images by: Beautiful Day Photography Wedding Planner & Event Designer: Brooke Keegan Special Events
A REAL-LIFE WEDDINGS
midst the chaos of the ER at Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno, Nevada, Andrea and Travis met and fell in love. She was a nursing student and he was in the middle of medical school. After a few months, they both found the courage to talk to each other.

“Three years later, I was working as a registered nurse and after Travis graduated medical school, we went on a vacation to Cape Cod to celebrate. On one of our last nights there, while walking on the beach, he knelt down on one knee and proposed,” says Andrea. “I said ‘yes’ of course!” destinationido.com
While searching the Internet for wedding inspiration, after allotting themselves a two-year timeline to plan and save money, Andrea discovered a promotion on Destination I Do’s website for a dream elopement contest. It was to be held at La Valencia Hotel and designed by Brooke Keegan Special Events. “Knowing it was a long shot, she decided to enter because how amazing would it be if we could just get married without all the planning and financial stress?” says Travis.
“Travis knelt down and asked our son if he had permission to marry me.”
To the couple’s surprise, they won! Andrea, Travis, their son, Easton, and Travis’ mother, Jeanne, headed to sunny La Jolla, California to say, “I do.” As an acoustic guitar played softly in the background, the couple’s son walked Andrea down the aisle where Travis was waiting in front of a picture-perfect ocean view.

“After a few words of wisdom on marriage and well wishes from JP, our officiant, as well as a reading from my mother-in-law, Travis knelt down and asked our son if he had permission to marry me,” says Andrea. “Easton agreed, and hand-in-hand we said the vows we had written together.”
Following their intimate ceremony, the couple, their son and Travis’ mother enjoyed an intimate meal as the sun slowly set. “I honestly could not have imagined a more perfect evening,” says Andrea. “Our hearts and our bellies were completely full.”

yler and Mary knew they wanted a destination wedding from the start, but the question was, “where?” To make that decision, the couple traveled back in time to the trips they had taken together. “One of our all-time favorite vacations was driving the Pacific Coast Highway, which included a night in Big Sur,” says the bride. “We instantly fell in love with the place and it became our favorite stop on our trip.” Big Sur was the perfect combination of beauty for their guests and sentiment for the couple.

Early on in the planning process, the couple decided to limit the guest list to immediate family. This had several perks, but the best was the bonding time for Mary and Tyler’s loved ones. “Everyone was excited at the idea of getting to spend three days with the two families together,” says Mary. Come wedding weekend, the group of 13 spent many wonderful hours together. This included a hike at Andrew Molera State Park, which ended at the beach – the perfect way to introduce their loved ones to the beauty of Big Sur.

Tyler and Mary’s chosen venue, the Ventana Inn & Spa, was a perfect fit for this small, close-knit group. The heartfelt ceremony took place overlooking the Pacific Ocean. “Walking down the aisle to see my fiancé and family looking back at me, with the most amazing backdrop of the Pacific Coast behind them, is a moment I will never forget,” says the bride. “The reception dinner that followed, however, was a pretty close second.”

“There was dancing, toasts were given and stories and laughter were shared. It was a very special night celebrating the joining of two families.”
To celebrate, the wedding group moved to the Ventana Inn’s restaurant for an intimate dinner under an arbor. “There was dancing, toasts were given and stories and laughter were shared,” reflects Mary. “It was a very special night celebrating the joining of two families.” Not only did Tyler and Mary achieve a beautiful destination wedding, but a beautiful experience for all in attendance.

here’s a first time for everything. For example, the first time Ingrid went on a blind date was also the first time she met her future husband. It was also love at first sight. “There he was, the guy with the most beautiful smile I have ever seen,” reflects Ingrid. “That night we talked about anything and everything. We both love to travel, so we shared stories about our trips. I recommended he travel to Greece as it is the most stunning place I have been.” Fast forward two years and Toni and Ingrid were on their way to Mykonos to say, “I do.”

The couple treated 65 guests to an event packed with personalized details and interactive activities. “[Before the] ceremony there was a flower bar where guests had the chance to pick their preferred flowers and wear wreaths, boutonnieres and corsages prepared on the spot,” says the bride. “Also, we put together a three-step ‘toss confetti bar’ outside the church where guests could prepare their cones according to their preferences (confetti, lavender or rose petals).” This touch was ultimately the bride’s favorite memory of the day – walking up the aisle to a beautiful, scented flower toss. The reception was a reflection of the couple’s style with “boho-inspired, vintage accents.” Instrumental in the couple pulling off the wedding of their dreams was their wedding planner at Rock Paper Scissors Events.
