TIPS FOR PICKING

the perfect wedding DESTINATION

Selecting the perfect location for your upcoming wedding away is probably the most important decision you will make outside of the person you’re choosing to say “I do” to. The destination carries over into basically every other decision you will make, so its significance is paramount. I’m often asked, “How did you choose your destination when you got married?” Being the founder of the magazine, I have been lucky enough to visit many special places in the years we’ve been on the newsstand, but when it came time for my own destination “I do’s,” I knew it was about more than just a pretty backdrop or a fancy resort. Some destinations truly lend themselves to weddings, where others might be more geared towards a honeymoon or family vacation. Here are four things to consider in order to make an informed decision when selecting your wedding getaway locale. 1. Land or sea? If you’re a mountain lover, enjoy wine country, medieval castles or are more the fun-in-the-sun and sand type, this will greatly narrow down where you might consider. Not all destination weddings have to be on the beach! Check out destinations like New Orleans (pg. 30) or Sonoma (pg. 34). Maybe even the cliffs of Scotland are more up your alley (pg. 50). Start with this question and make sure you’re both truly on the same page before you make your final decision when it comes to the type of destination.

make sure the destination you’ve chosen is able to accommodate your desires. If the nearest florist is four hours from the remote cabin in the middle of a rainforest you’ve dreamt of, but you can’t imagine forgoing the cascading bouquet and hanging floral chandelier for the reception, perhaps a compromise is in order. There are plenty of places around the world that feel secluded, yet still cater to weddings. If you really want to have that “off-thebeaten-path” experience, perhaps save it for the honeymoon. 4. What is the cost? Your cost is only one side of the financial coin to consider. Before you select a wedding destination, consider the costs for your guests. Keep in mind, no matter someone’s financial situation, they may or may not want to spend a lot of money to attend your wedding. If the resort you’ve selected is five-star, yet some of your guests are more comfortable spending closer to a three-star price, make sure there is a variety of price points and options within a short distance from where you plan to get married. Doing this bit of soul searching with your soon-to-be husband or wife will be one of the first major decisions you make as a couple. No matter where you decide to tie-the-knot, enjoy the planning process! Yours truly, Jennifer Stein

3. Is it a “wedding friendly” destination? Dreaming of getting married in a remote place can be fun in theory, but not always in practice. If you want the standard trimmings of a wedding – floral displays, DJ or live band, wedding cake, lighting and décor, furniture rentals, etc., then

2. How far do people have to travel? Once you’ve narrowed down your choices, start doing the math on how many hours your loved ones will have to travel. This could factor-in as a tie-breaker if you are torn between a couple of places. The closer your wedding location is and the easier it is to get to will impact the number of people who opt to attend.

Planning a dream destination wedding is all about priorities. For some, an expensive, oneof-a-kind wedding dress isn’t at the top of their must-have list. For out-of-the-box brides who are open to the idea of a “pre-loved” wedding dress, Brides do Good could be for you. The benefits are twofold. Not only will you get a designer gown at a fraction of the cost, but the proceeds will benefit non-profit charities – Plan International and Too Young to Wed, both of which combat child marriage. Brides do Good ships worldwide through its online boutique and pop-up retail locations. The gowns available are donated by brides or are sample gowns direct from bridal designers. Participating bridal brands include Elie Saab, Alexander McQueen, Oscar de la Renta, Vera Wang, Lela Rose, Marchesa and more. bridesdogood.com

1. Greenery – From rich vibrant greenery like nagi and Italian ruscus to soft sage-colored greens like silver dollar eucalyptus, greenery is a must for any wedding look. It adds texture and movement and is a great way to make your arrangements look lush without a lot of added cost. 2. Floral Jewelry – Everything from statement necklaces, bracelets, rings and earrings are created using fresh flowers and foliage. It’s an out-of-the-box idea that can be used as a bouquet alternative or as a chic accessory. 3. Tropical Flowers – It’s all about bold colors and big leaves! Tropical flowers like pin cushion protea and anthurium and tropical greens, such as monstera leaves and palms, provide pops of color and amazing texture. Expect to see them in bouquets, as well as on ceremony backdrops, dessert tables and more. 4. Statement Blooms – Add a statement bloom to your arrangements to create visual interest and volume. Favorites like protea, dahlias and peonies will continue to make an impact in 2018. 5. Cascading Bouquets – Brides are taking the traditional cascading bouquet shape and adding a twist! Expect to see a carefree, wild and untamed shape making an appearance down the aisle filled with lush greenery and gorgeous blooms.

“Do what you think is best for your wedding. It’s about you as a couple, celebrating with your closest friends and family. Throw a party you’ll actually enjoy rather than throwing a party to impress people.” – Lindsay, British Virgin Islands destination bride

“You don’t have to opt for an all-inclusive, resort-style wedding package. I almost went down that road because it seemed the easiest. However, for my bohochic style, the packages weren’t the right fit for me.” – Roxy, Oahu destination bride (shown)

“Find someone you trust on the other end and just let go. It’s difficult to control things from afar, especially when you may be unfamiliar with the culture.” – Lucinda, Cambodia destination bride

Long-haul flights can be quite detrimental to your body, so do yourselves a favor and come prepared for your destination wedding or honeymoon flights. Seasoned travelers swear by compression socks. They help to prevent blood from pooling at your feet, which can potentially cause clots and unsightly painful swelling in your legs. CEP Compression Socks are designed by the global leader in medical compression and are popular among professional athletes to help increase their endurance and recover faster. So, don’t spend your honeymoon African safari stumbling around in the bush with painful knees and ankles. CEP Compression Socks range from $20-$85, cepcompression.com

Smart Suit

FABRICS

WORDS BY RYAN WAGNER, CO-FOUNDER OF BESPOKE EDGE, BESPOKEEDGE.COM

Traditional suit fabrics can sometimes be too warm for many destination weddings in tropical climates. Follow these tips to choose the right suit fabric for you. Linen While linen can make for an incredibly comfortable suit in warm weather, it will wrinkle – and fast! Instead of a pure linen suit, try a linen and wool blend. You’ll have the breathability of linen, but also the anti-wrinkling features of wool.

TRAVEL ESSENTIAL

You will likely spend weeks thinking over your destination wedding or honeymoon packing list, but there’s one item you need to be sure to include – something to put your wet and/or dirty clothes into for the return trip. The last thing you want to arrive home to is a suitcase full of mildew-ridden clothing. Wander Wet Bags not only solve this stinky issue, but they do so in style. You will quickly count one of these eco-friendly and water-resistant bags among your travel essentials. A Wander Wet Bag can be used to carry your damp swimsuit to and from the beach or to contain your muddy hiking clothes after the honeymoon adventure. $32, wanderwetbags.com destinationido.com

Bamboo Yes, a suit can even be made of bamboo! It’s not only a sustainable fabric, but super comfortable and smooth to the touch. Bamboo is an excellent choice for allergy prone skin, is breathable and an all-around great option for warm climates. Wool For most temperate locales, a high-quality woolen suit should be your go-to. Fine fabrics can be relatively breathable, plus you can’t beat the beautiful drape and contour of a great woolen suit. If you’re still concerned the suit will be too warm, consider forgoing the jacket lining to make for an even more breathable jacket.

THE HONEYMOONIST

honeymoons

WORDS BY SUSAN MOYNIHAN

S

ome of the world’s most intriguing honeymoon locales are surprisingly close to home. Take these, four of my favorite, only-in-America spots. These aren’t your typical American go-tos, but are more unexpected suggestions, for couples looking to do something different. Each has romantic extras, a distinct sense of place, unique history and culture that make it honeymoon-worthy.

KENNEBUNKPORT, MAINE

Why we love it: From the miles of coastline to the fresh lobster rolls at the Clam Shack, this is the ultimate Maine experience in a quaint, smalltown setting. Romantic extras: A boat tour is a must; join a scheduled outing on a bi-masted schooner or traditional lobster boat, or rent a pair of kayaks and paddle around the harbor. The acclaimed Grace White Barn Inn and Spa is the go-to spot for a

romantic dinner; the setting in twin 1820s barns is as exceptional as the cuisine. Can’t get enough? Sign up for a cooking class and work with the kitchen team on an evening meal. Best time to go: Summer is peak season in Maine, for obvious weather reasons, but we also love it in fall, when the crowds thin out and the cooler air gives you an excuse to cuddle by the fire. Avoid mid-May to mid-June, which the locals call “black fly season.”

Where to stay: Nestled in 60 acres of birch forest, Hidden Pond’s 39 standalone cottages feature luxe touches like Frette linens, gas fireplaces, outdoor showers and screened porches. At Tree Spa, three treatment rooms are perched eight feet off the ground, connected by a catwalk. Produce comes from the on-site organic farm and a five-minute shuttle takes you to the beach. It’s open from May through October.

AUSTIN, TEXAS

Why we love it: The creative capital of Texas, Austin has it all: live music, cowboy culture, great restaurants from old-school barbecue to cutting-edge sushi, plus hiking and biking just outside the city. Romantic extras: Practice your twostep at the Broken Spoke, where dolled-up couples spin around the dance floor to old-school country swing. For a great day trip, try the Texas Wine Trail, with 52 wineries scattered in Hill Country outside the city. Come sunset, hit Congress Avenue Bridge to see the resident bats head out at dusk during warmer months. Best time to go: Spring and fall are ideal, with sunny skies and low humidity, but even in January the highs reach the 60s – perfect cowboy boot weather. Avoid mid-March, when the South by Southwest festival puts the entire city at peak capacity.

Hotel Jerome Where to stay: Kimpton Hotel Van Zandt is a cool, 319-room downtown hotel that takes its name from native son and songwriter, Townes Van Zandt. Complimentary happy hour runs nightly and live music at Geraldine’s kicks off at 9:30 p.m. on weekdays.

ASPEN, COLORADO

Why we love it: This stellar ski town is known for its luxurious lifestyle and glamorous clientele, but at its roots Aspen is an Old West mining town, with plenty of historic charm. Romantic extras: Dining is an event here, whether you do the sleigh ride to rustic Pine Creek Cookhouse or settle in at Piñons, a local favorite in the heart of town. Take in a show at the Wheeler Opera House, which opened in 1889 and remains the cultural heart of the city, showcasing film, music and live theater. The rugged landscape that draws skiers and snowboarders in winter offers over 120 miles of hiking and biking trails come summer.

Best/worst time to go: Aspen is a four-season destination, appealing to skiers, hikers or just lovers of epic natural beauty. Avoid peak times like winter break, when hotels, lift lines and restaurants are packed. Where to stay: Hotel Jerome is an iconic beauty that was built in 1889 to standards rivaling the best hotels in Europe. It was fully redone in 2013, blending Western touches with modern plush and is managed by luxe Auberge Resorts. The spa is a must after a day of exploring, as are drinks at the old-school J-bar.

SAVANNAH, GEORGIA

Why we love it: Everything moves slower in Low Country. The relaxing landscape of tidal marshes and Spanish mossdraped trees makes this an ideal place to unwind after wedding craziness.

There’s no better way to see it than with a walking tour. Join the locals beaching it at Tybee Island and stay for a sunset cruise; dolphin sightings are almost guaranteed. Best/worst time to go: Spring time is ideal, when humidity is low and the azaleas are abloom. This low-lying city can be affected by storms, so be careful in September, which is peak hurricane season. Where to stay: The Bohemian Hotel Savannah Riverfront is a 75-room boutique we love. The location on River Street is ideal for exploring downtown and on-site. Rocks on the Roof is one of the city’s top sunset spots.

Exceeding all Expectations

I

sometimes have to be selective when it comes to accepting trips as editor of Destination I Do, but when an invitation to Mexico and the Fairmont Mayakoba crossed my desk, I didn’t hesitate to participate. My partner got to tag along and, after months of busy work schedules and hardly seeing each other, a few days in paradise was just what the doctor ordered. (Much like enjoying your honeymoon and relaxing postdestination wedding!) Mayakoba, Mexico is truly unique. Nestled in the heart of Riviera Maya and 40 minutes from the Cancun International Airport, Mayakoba is a resort development that consists of four eco-friendly, world-class hotels, a golf course that hosts the only PGA Tour event in Mexico and a central village known as El Pueblito. The AAA-Five Diamond Fairmont Mayakoba was the first resort to be built and got prime real estate amongst the unique surroundings. Mayakoba means “village over water” in an ancient Mayan language and it perfectly describes the community that was built amongst the Yucatan’s cenotes. Mayakoba’s developers took the massive subterranean river (cenote) and from it, carved a series of lagoons and canals that allow hotel guests to travel around and between resorts. It’s no wonder that Mayakoba is often referred to as the “Venice of the Yucatan.”

24

destinationido.com

Guests of the Fairmont Mayakoba can take a romantic tour of the canals on a traditional “lancha” (covered boat). The 45 acres of the Fairmont are home to over 350 species of animals – including crocodiles and spider monkeys, so there is plenty to discover. A spin around the resort on one of the lanchas is a unique and essential opportunity for wedding couples. Also, be sure to make a pit stop at El Pueblito’s cooking school to learn how to make delicious Mexican classics like mole. For your nuptials, El Pueblito has a charming chapel that is at the heart of the Mexican village square. Back at the Fairmont, the central lawn is surrounded by lush foliage and mangroves that would be ideal for your reception. After dining at each of the Fairmont Mayakoba’s three restaurants, I’m confident the talented culinary team could deliver a wedding meal worthy of the gorgeous setting. Aside from the delicious food, comfortable accommodations and unique setting, it’s the service that truly makes the Fairmont Mayakoba a standout. Our visit was simply easy. Any request we had was quickly met and the outstanding staff exceeded all expectations. For example, after mentioning my love for churros to a staff member, we were gifted a surprise late-night snack of fresh churros and Mexican hot chocolate. If that doesn’t set the scene for romance, I don’t know what does!

hether at the base of a mountain or deep in the woods, there is magic in Colorado. If only you could bottle it up. Found in two of the state’s most stunning locations you will find breathtaking views, luxurious accommodations and attentive staff to set the par for your destination wedding experience. The adventure capitalist couple longing to elevate their nuptial sojourn may look no further than Eleven – a collection of unforgettable properties and itineraries.

At Scarp Ridge Lodge in Crested Butte, customization is key. In fact, it’s what each property’s “experience manager” lives for. If you’re looking for adventure, options are plentiful and range by season. Try a mountain biking tour, a wildflower-gathering hike or a cross-country skiing venture, all led by local Scarp pro-enthusiasts who know the national forest Ridge Lodge like the back of their hands. Cruiser bikes are available right outside the lodge’s front door if you fancy a jaunt around the tiny, idyllic town. If you’re imagining a more intimate getaway, the structure (originally the Croatian Hall where the town’s first residents would meet socially) boasts a game room with a juke box, theater size televisions, indoor pool and sauna and a home gym (complete with a reformer for Pilates lovers). Guest rooms come with deep soaking tubs, steam showers, mini bars with fresh food choices and a music system that allows in-room music or the ability to tap into the curated playlist that streams throughout the house (you can even hear it when submerged in the pool). Scarp Ridge Buttes’ most talented chefs, Lodge bartenders and sommeliers, who will keep everyone well fed and satisfied throughout the length of your stay. When you’re shoulder-deep in the bubbling rooftop hot tub gazing up at the twinkling stars, you may vow to never leave, but it’s only a matter of time before Crested Butte tempts you out on to its well-loved streets, where you’ll find restaurants, shops and some very friendly residents. If mingling with the locals isn’t your idea of a magical mountain wedding, it’s more likely Taylor River Lodge in Almont is the destination for you. It has a ‘summer camp for adults’ vibe, but with a fly-fishing theme. From the outside, the 1940s authentic cabins look rustic amongst the trees and beside the rushing river, but the insides maintain the same luxurious accommodations expected of the brand. With a mission of bringing close family and friends even closer, Taylor River Lodge will delight your guests with outdoorsy activities like fishing (of all kinds), rock climbing, lawn games and hula hooping contests. The indoor/outdoor pool facility is a sight to be seen, preferably from a nearby Adirondack chair while sunbathing and drinking a cocktail. In the evening, gather your crew around a crackling campfire to enjoy each other’s company and also the homemade graham crackers and marshmallows. Of course, this is Eleven, so spa treatments are available upon request, the staff is attentive and intuitive and each room comes with posh amenities and a Marshall speaker (if you prefer your own tunes over the rushing river outside your patio door).

A promise for the future in a place called paradise.

ew Orleans might not be the first destination that comes to mind for a wedding away, but it has so much more to offer than Mardi Gras. In fact, locals cherish the softer side of NOLA.

LUXURY SCENIC STYLE

The NOPSI Hotel is one of the first luxury hotels to open in years and is turning your preconceived notions of New Orleans topsy-turvy. The building itself dates back to the 1920s and is the former home of the New Orleans Public Service Inc. (NOPSI). The hotel’s developers kept most of the original architecture intact, yet it has 217 guest rooms and 76 suites to suit your fancy. Located in the Central Business District, the NOPSI Hotel offers a high-end, laid-back setting, all within walking distance to the French Quarter and Garden District.

30

The hotel’s outdoor venues are quickly becoming the places to see-and-be-seen. The underCURRENT’s patio is a hot spot for locals with craft cocktails that focus on gin and Champagne libations. For some after-hours fun, the NOPSI Hotel has one of the only rooftop bars in the area – Above the Grid, which has sweeping views of the city skyline. NOPSI Hotel’s food is a major selling point in regard to weddings. The hotel promises a “true restaurant experience” for your reception and the entire banquet menu boasts scratch cooking and Creole specialties. Executive Chef Peter Page is an expert on Louisiana cuisine and happily meets with wedding couples to create a custom menu. As for the “where” when it

comes to weddings, NOPSI’s Dryades Grand Ballroom is the clear winner. It’s a former warehouse with a chic, industrial vibe with 30-foot ceilings, exposed brick, arched windows and elegant chandeliers. If you’re after a more traditional ceremony site, the Immaculate Conception Church is just a few blocks away and the hotel can arrange for a Second Line to accompany you from the church back to the NOPSI. For pre- or post-wedding events, there are endless options in “The Big Easy.” Treat your guests to a traditional Friday luncheon at the Caribbean Club or Galatoire’s or enjoy a farewell brunch at Commander’s Palace. For an unforgettable nighttime outing, seeing live jazz at Preservation Hall will be something you and your guests will not soon forget! Whether you’re looking to do a little or a lot for your destination wedding in New Orleans, you can fear not because, as my trusty cabby said, “There’s never a last call!”

pa enthusiasts, golf lovers and foodies, consider yourselves covered in the Scottsdale area of Arizona. Home to some of the most renowned golf courses in the West and equally impressive destination spas, you can enjoy over 300 days of sunshine and nine months of near-perfect temperatures. Wedding groups will find convenience (the airport is a mere 20 minute drive), adventure (Camelback Mountain is one of the most hiked locations in the valley) and beauty ( jaw dropping sunsets appear nightly). One of our favorite properties in the valley for events is the Sanctuary on Camelback Mountain Resort and Spa, which is situated on the side of, you guessed it, Camelback Mountain. This modern-meets-magnificent property offers spectacular views, sumptuous dining, newly refurbished spa suites and multi-level spa casitas – all within close proximity to the action nearby Scottsdale is known for. Food Network star, Chef Beau MacMillan has created a culinary paradise ideally suited for the very destination it’s in. At elements restaurant, choose from local, organic and seasonal ingredients found on Chef MacMillan’s artfully crafted menu. For those spa-goers in the group, you’ve truly found the perfect haven. Sanctuary Spa is one of the most well-known and popular spa destinations in the area. Celebrities have graced the massage tables for a reason – it’s transcendent. The comfortable, yet luxurious décor sets your mind and body at ease. Around the corner from Sanctuary on Camelback Mountain is Andaz Scottsdale Resort & Spa – one of the area’s newest and most celebrated arrivals. This mid-century modern gem is thoughtful in all the right ways. Instead of the typical reservation desk, the welcoming “Living Room” gives you the impression you’ve been invited into someone’s home rather than a hotel. Local artists have work on display throughout the hotel, for sale in the gift shop and the Andaz Scottsdale has gone so far as to partner with a local nonprofit organization called Cattle Track (a historic complex for local artisans, performers and students in celebration of Scottsdale’s heritage).

A promise for the future in a place called paradise.

The heart of the resort, which is getting widespread acclaim, is Weft & Warp Art Bar + Kitchen. Serving up seasonal specialties in interesting ways – like their mouthwatering watermelon starter with sea salt, crispy chicken skin and basil on goat cheese crème – makes this place an inviting culinary escape. Venue options here are numerous – both indoors and out. Sprawling lawns with Mummy Mountain and Camelback Mountain views are in abundance, as well as ballrooms with floor-to-ceiling windows and modern décor. The two presidential suites would prove ideal for a rehearsal dinner. With stunning views and a wrap-around patio complete with a fire pit, your guests will continue the celebration straight through into the wedding. As you look to the West for your destination wedding event and honeymoon vacation, a trip to paradise in the Valley of the Sun may just be the retreat you’re looking for.

raveling to a place like Sonoma County brings an abundance of anticipation. The wine, the beauty and the landscape are world renowned. Whether going for your wedding, honeymoon or simply a romantic getaway, Sonoma delivers. With more major airline carriers now flying direct, there are new opportunities and ideas in this richly cultured area. One example of this is Cornerstone Sonoma, a Sunset Magazine garden and marketplace with on-site boutique shops, a variety of unique ceremony sites, event spaces and, of course, a winery right next door to make planning a destination wedding simple and stress-free.

Eat, Drink and Be Married As you make your way into the Sonoma Valley, a short drive north of San Francisco, one can see why it’s one of the most visited wine regions in the world. Couples have many options when choosing a space or winery in which to tie the knot. When asked what makes Sonoma Valley so unique, Birgitt Vaughan, Public Relations Manager for Sonoma County Tourism, says, “Sonoma County offers more than 425 wineries, romantic vineyards and breathtaking Pacific Ocean beaches.” Kunde Family Winery provides a magical setting atop Boot Hill, a place straight out of a dream. You can host an entire event under massive majestic oak trees, which look to have been plucked right out of a SPRING & SUMMER 2018

painting, with 360-degree views of the valley and vineyard. Staying at the romantic Kenwood Inn and Spa, A Four Sisters Inn, pulls the stress right out of you. This 29-room boutique hotel is nestled in the valley like your own hideaway. Its lush gardens and fountain areas are perfect for intimate moments with your soon-to-be partner in life. Food options abound with restaurants like Glen Ellen Star in the small town of Glen Ellen, which serves what could be the best clam chowder on the planet. This hotel is a go-to as it can host grand weddings while providing romantic wine country flare. Exploring the region is part of the adventure. Within a quick scenic drive, you can be on the coast watching the waves crash at Goat Rock Beach, hiking in Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve observing the local wildlife or contemplating the sheer size of the area’s largest redwood trees. Mrs. Vaughan goes on to say, “Sonoma County has award-winning restaurants, majestic redwood forests, relaxing resorts, paired with world-class wine, beer and spirits and abundant sunshine. Last but not least, this wine country favorite is just 45 minutes away from San Francisco.” No matter what your intentions are in this bountiful region, you are certain to find a place that is romantic, scenic, relaxed and full of wine.

Florida native or insider knows the intricacies of the state’s seemingly countless beach towns. But, for outsiders, navigating the Sunshine State’s sandy options can feel overwhelming. It’s tempting to opt for a well-known big hitter like Daytona Beach or Miami, but you would be cutting yourself and your destination wedding guests short by not exploring some of the more off-the-beaten-path options. Enter South Walton County.

Alys Beach

South Walton is comprised of a 26-mile stretch of sandy beach in Northwest Florida. More specifically, South Walton

includes 16 beach “neighborhoods” from which to choose for your charming destination wedding or honeymoon. As an added bonus, St. Joe Club & Resorts has taken root throughout South Walton and brings to the table a collection of high-end hotels and vacation rentals. This area of Florida is famous for its state parks, coastal forests and rare coastal dune lakes. Read on to discover our top picks from this piece of Floridian paradise.

South Walton. Buildings boasting Dutch Colonial architecture surround a central square, creating an intimate, pedestrian-friendly hub of activity.

STAY

The Pearl Hotel: A St. Joe Club and Resorts boutique property with just 55 rooms, The Pearl Hotel is at the epicenter of action in Rosemary Beach. The hotel’s restaurant, Havana Beach Bar and Grill, is one of the area’s only AAA Four-Diamond restaurants.

“I DO”

Weddings at The Pearl Hotel are stylish, intimate affairs. Our favorite venue was the Havana Beach Rooftop Lounge. Its rooftop, poolside location is ideal for smaller, trendy weddings with ocean views.

Adjacent to Rosemary Beach is the sparkling gem of South Walton – Alys Beach. While each town has its own architectural style, Alys Beach is by far the most recognizable. It’s the Bermudan-inspired architecture with stunning white stucco that sets this chic town apart.

STAY

Alys Beach is comprised of privately owned homes available for rent. Each of the high-end abodes features a private courtyard and water feature. To host your wedding here, you must rent a home with a minimum of three bedrooms for a minimum of four nights.

This high-end enclave is ideal for discerning, modern couples. The well-vetted resources are strictly enforced with mandatory vendors for florals, rentals and catering. Weddings can be hosted on the semi-private beach or in one of the many green spaces.

Seaside Visiting this South Walton beach town will feel like stepping back in time. It was the original community built around the “modern urbanist” concept. Seaside features homes with white picket fences, wide front porches and metal roofs – most of which are available for rent. The town’s claim to fame is that it was the setting of the movie “The Truman Show.” David Demarest, Director of Communications for Visit South Walton, describes Seaside as “a little slice of 1950s Americana.”

PLAY

Seaside’s town center features great shopping, Airstream Row for local food trucks and several beach access points. This is one pit stop along the famous Highway 30A you’ll definitely want to take.

Santa Rosa Beach / WaterColor Santa Rosa Beach was founded in 1910 and has a longstanding tradition of excellence in the area. Located in the heart of it all is WaterColor, which boasts stunning SPRING & SUMMER 2018

parks, breathtaking rental homes and walkways for strolling.

STAY

WaterColor Inn: St. Joe Club and Resorts’ WaterColor Inn has a reputation of distinction. The chic, coastal style and sumptuous rooms would play amazing host for your destination wedding or honeymoon. It’s also home to Fish Out Of Water, the second AAA Four-Diamond restaurant in the area.

“I DO”

Eden Gardens State Park is an affordable, breathtaking setting for weddings. You can exchange vows beneath the “wedding tree” – a 600-year-old Spanish moss-draped Oak – and in front of the historic 1895 mansion. Back at WaterColor Inn, there are a plethora of green parks and sophisticated spaces for your nuptials. Our favorite combination would be a ceremony in Cerulaan Park and reception at the WaterColor LakeHouse.

PLAY

Hop on a complimentary bike courtesy of WaterColor Inn and pedal to see the coastal dune lakes up close in Point Washington State Forest. The area’s many bridges and waterways provide a scenic backdrop. You can also swing by WaterColor Inn’s BoatHouse for stand up paddleboarding, kayaking or fishing.

n a state as big as Florida, it’s all about location, location, location for your destination wedding! Hammock Beach Resort is located in Palm Coast, 30 minutes from the Daytona airport, 90 minutes east of Orlando and just south of St. Augustine. When it comes time to say “I do,” the resort has various lawns and ballrooms to suit any capacity or style. It’s entirely feasible for you to host multiple events, all with a different look and location. Hammock Beach even offers special wedding packages that include three to four days’ worth of experiences like welcome events, rehearsal dinners and more. “We want [couples] to have that giant wedding experience where it’s the entire wedding weekend,” says Director of Catering and Conference Services, Britni Malloy. Speaking of experiences, there are activities galore at Hammock Beach. The

resort is known for its world-class golf, including the recently reopened Ocean Course, and its Water Pavilion complete with a lazy river, waterslide and sandy bottom pool. If your guests want to get out and see the sights, we can’t recommend historic St. Augustine enough. a charming town in which to spend a day away from the resort. Perhaps best of all, Palm Coast and Hammock Beach offer enough variety to make it affordable and accessible for virtually any budget. Whether you want a wedding for 50 or 500, you’re sure to find just the right combination.

The variety of venues and accommodations is truly perfect for wedding groups. In terms of lodging for families, we recommend a suite in the Ocean Tower. The three or four bedroom luxury suites start at 2,800 sq. ft. and feature three full baths and a gorgeous gourmet kitchen. For couples, The Lodge is certainly the way to go. Located right on the ocean, The Lodge is like a boutique hotel within the resort that was fully renovated in 2017 and features only 20 rooms and luxurious amenities. Odds are, you’re going to have some family driving in for the big occasion and Hammock Beach’s villas or vacation rentals would be a great option with garages and/or complimentary parking.

experience you and your bridal party will never forget. Las Lagunas is a one-of-a-kind property that truly offers an incredible nature-adventure destination for the eco-eager couple. The combination of oversized luxury bungalows, on-site gourmet dining and lavish hotel grounds should put Las Lagunas at the top of your destinations “short” list.

Peru

magine the romance of honeymooning in an ancient city, one surrounded by farmland countryside, snow-capped glaciers, green valleys and hiking trails with a direct path to one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. That’s Cusco, Peru – ideal for the couple who seeks outdoor adventure, cultural history and mouthwatering cuisine for their trip-of-a-lifetime.

HONEYMOON THERE PERU An eye-popping presentation of holistic ingredients pairs traditional Peruvian food with what Chef Rodriguez calls culture-to-table dining. “Peruvian cuisine revolves around spiritualism, history and ancestry,” says Rodriguez. “I wanted to infuse as much of the country’s history, art and culture into the dishes and cocktails to showcase the wholesomeness and diversity of the region.” Traditional favorites like lomo saltado are a must, as are new delicacies like the edible flower salad paired with cocktails from the bar, which presents a healing approach to your adult beverages. Try the Beet Boulevardier, gin infused with beet juice and secret house-made potions and bitters, accompanied by a cone of parmesan chips clipped to the glass.

Photos courtesy of: JW Marriott El Convento Cusco

Once you venture off property to explore the cobblestone streets of the city that surrounds you, expect a wild stream of culture on every corner. Religious parades, textile shopping to local artisan stands and Patrón for pennies on the dollar are all just a few steps from your hotel. A honeymoon in Peru wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the worldfamous archaeological site of Machu Picchu. Located four hours from Cusco, this is an adventure by rail that transports

you back to a time when travel was romanticized and the journey was as important as the destination. Getting to Machu Picchu is best arranged by the hotel concierge who can coordinate your rail passes and a guided tour. Be sure to also ask about a visit to the Sacred Valley, a walk around the Maras Salt Mines and a thrilling guided horseback ride through the hillside of Maras to the ruins of Moray. Before returning to Cusco, stop for a private picnic, glamping style, on the bank of Lake Piuray where the JW Marriott hosts private dinners and parties under the sun and stars. After a day exploring, return to your relaxing hotel home base and enjoy a dip in the 24-hour heated indoor pool, sip cocktails by the lobby fire and snap photos with the property’s regular alpaca visitor, affectionately known as Panchito. You can even consult a local shaman for a coca leaf reading. Honeymooning in Cusco at the JW Marriott El Convento Cusco means exploring the delightful culture and many sides of Peru, all found within a few feet to a few hours of a hotel that feels sweeter than home.

TRAVEL TIP: Turn your day trip to Machu Picchu into an overnight stay. The day is long and an evening in the small town of Aguas Calientes is just what you need to recharge before returning to the city.

West Virginia Home to Rich Tradition FAMILY-FRIENDLY FINDS

WORDS BY COURTNEY COX

46

P

rior to my visit, all I knew about West Virginia was that it is mentioned in my favorite John Denver song and is home to the iconic Greenbrier resort. While John Denver was obviously absent, The Greenbrier certainly didn’t disappoint. “America’s Resort” has a reputation that spans 240 years, since it began

welcoming guests in 1778. Part of its repute is that The Greenbrier is hard to get to, but this is a common misconception. It’s an 80-minute drive from Roanoke, a three-hour drive from Washington D.C. and there’s an Amtrak station right on-site in White Sulphur Springs. With the unmistakable interiors by Dorothy Draper and her protégé Carleton Varney, The Greenbrier feels like a life-size dollhouse with its bold carpets, wild wallpapers and striking fixtures. Its interior design is just one piece of the resort’s history. In destinationido.com

The Greenbrier continues its over-thetop offerings when it comes to on-site happenings. While famous for golf, there are more than 55 other activities that will keep any and all wedding guests satisfied. I would waste my word count listing them all, so you’ll have to take my word for it. In addition to wedding couples and honeymooners, The Greenbrier is a literal heaven-on-earth for sports fans. Pete Sampras is the Tennis Professional Emeritus and Lee Trevino is the Golf Professional Emeritus. The resort also boasts a world-class Sports Performance Center that has hosted both the New Orleans Saints and Houston Texans for their summer training camps. Greenbrier guests can attend practices and scrimmages for free and can rub elbows with some of the NFL’s biggest stars. The Greenbrier has recently undergone a renaissance of sorts with nearly $300 million dollars of improvements since being purchased back in 2009. There is also a ski resort in the works that’s expected to be completed for the winter 2018 season. I’m a romantic at heart and a history nerd, so I know that I’ll be back to The Greenbrier one day, hopefully with my own family in tow for some old-fashioned fun.

fact, I can’t imagine a place more steeped in romantic tradition for a destination wedding couple. Grooms sip cocktails in the Lobby Bar underneath an original chandelier from the film “Gone With the Wind,” while brides write a pre-wedding love note in the Victorian Writing Room to be placed in the North Parlor’s “Love Clock.” After a ceremony in The Greenbrier Chapel, enjoy a breathtaking reception in the Cameo Ballroom. The shade of pink on the walls was specifically selected because it is the most flattering for brides.

A Lakeside Getaway in

Georgia WORDS BY COURTNEY COX

W

hen couples are planning their destination wedding, they often fall into the trap of trying to please everyone. We regularly advise that this is not possible, but after a recent trip to Greensboro, Georgia, I’m starting to rethink my opinion. There, hidden away in Middle Georgia, is The Ritz-Carlton Reynolds, Lake Oconee. Located 90 minutes outside of Atlanta, Lake Oconee is a hidden gem of respite from the hustle and bustle and, at times, unbearable heat of the South. Upon arrival, I was instantly drawn in by the sun setting over the lake and bonfires bursting to life in the nearby forest. I was certainly drinking the Kool-Aid…or should I say, sweet tea?

FAMILY-FRIENDLY FINDS

When it comes to accommodations, in addition to the spacious rooms, there are also six cottages and a Lake House – perfect for destination wedding groups. As for activities, good old-fashioned fun is how they roll. Think bingo by the pool, giant slip and slides, world-class sporting grounds and the Reynolds Kingdom of Golf presented by TaylorMade.

48

The cuisine at The Ritz-Carlton, Lake Oconee also doesn’t disappoint. Gaby’s by the Lake is ideal for a casual lunch of catfish tacos and Georgia’s restaurant will be a hit for those wanting Southern staples like bacon-wrapped meatloaf with house-smoked ketchup. Not to ruin the surprise, but after an amazing meal at Lin-

ger Longer Steakhouse, you’ll be treated to a mountainous batch of freshly made, seasonally flavored cotton candy. Adults stare blankly at it before quickly diving in and devouring the whole thing. This epitomizes the atmosphere and attitude of The Ritz-Carlton, Lake Oconee. “This is The Ritz-Carlton where you can let your hair down. There’s not a crystal chandelier in the place. Our Southern men and women really like to take care of our guests,” says General Manager Ralph Vick. “This is a place where we make little kids out of grown-ups.” For your “I do’s,” The Forest or Sandy Creek Barn would each make a delightful choice. On any given day, you can look out your window and see guests fishing off the dock, a couple swinging lazily in a hammock and a parent pushing their squealing child on a giant rope swing. Almost sounds too good to be true, doesn’t it? In reality, Lake Oconee did take on a surreal quality – one of utter relaxation, family fun and friendly folks. All-in-all, an amazing place to start your life together as a married couple. destinationido.com

ASK THE EXPERT

g n i t c e l Se Five Tips for

g n di d e W

e r i Att

WORDS BY BETH CHAPMAN OF BETH CHAPMAN STYLING

Selecting the attire for your destination wedding is an important step in setting the tone for the overall look of your big day. Your gown should always reflect your individual style, as well as the aesthetic and formality of the wedding. Identifying the theme of your wedding requires inspiration. I like to recommend that you use your venue as a muse for your wedding fashion. The level of formality, the color and even the fabric should all be influenced by where your nuptials are taking place.

1. DRESS FOR THE CLIMATE

ASK THE EXPERT

When selecting your gown, take into consideration the climate of your wedding location. Fabric weight can be an important factor if you are getting married in a tropical location.

56

Some fabrics to consider for a hot, humid climate are organza, chiffon, tulle or lace (particularly, Chantilly lace). Brides think they need to avoid a ball gown or fuller silhouettes if they are getting married in a warm climate. This is not the case, as long as the weight of the fabric is appropriate. Another option is to wear a fuller silhouette for the ceremony and then change

into a sheath or short gown for the reception. If you are so in love with your gown that you can’t bear to take it off, then consider a detachable train or a full overskirt that you would wear over your gown for the ceremony and then remove for the reception.

2. PREPARE BEFORE YOU SHOP Selecting a wedding gown is often one of the first steps a bride takes as she embarks on the journey of her engagement. Finding the perfect gown is exciting, but can sometimes be confusing and overwhelming. There are a few things that should take place before you begin shopping. First, you should set a budget. Included in your overall

destinationido.com

wedding budget should be costs for your attire. This should include your gown, veil, shoes, accessories and alterations. When deciding where to shop for your dress, ensure that the bridal store has gowns that fall within your budget. Next, you need to have your wedding date and venue secured prior to shopping. It is next to impossible to select your gown when you can’t visualize where you will be getting married.

3. CHOOSE THE RIGHT SHOE Shoe selection becomes even more important when you are planning a destination wedding. Consider the location of your ceremony and where your photographs will be taken when deciding on your shoe style. If your destination has cobblestone streets or grass, you may want to consider a wedge or stacked heel. This style of shoe adds the height that many brides appreciate, but will also provide stability. If you are getting married on a beach, but want to change to a heel for your reception, have the seamstress hem the dress to your heel height. You will most likely have to hold up the front of your gown on the beach anyway.

4. TO VEIL OR NOT TO VEIL Wearing a veil is a very personal decision. It is important to keep your ceremony environment in mind when you are considering this option. If you are getting married in a location where it can tend to be windy, like on the beach or the top of a mountain, a veil, particularly a long one, might not be the best choice. While a blowing veil can be beautiful in photographs, it can be distracting during your ceremony. If there’s a chance you will encounter a breeze on your wedding day, but still want to wear a veil, opt for a lace or beaded trim veil. The novelty detail will add a little weight to the veil and it won’t be as apt to blow in the breeze.

5. TRAVELING WITH YOUR WEDDING GOWN

If you are traveling with a very large wedding gown, vacuum seal it! Turn the gown inside out, place it in a large vacuum seal bag intended for a comforter and remove the air. This will tremendously reduce the size of the gown and will allow you to fit it into a suitcase. When you arrive at the destination, hang the gown immediately. Be sure there is a steamer available for a final pressing on the wedding day. ASK THE EXPERT

Headshot photo courtesy of: Carla Ten Eyck

I never recommend shipping your gown or wedding attire. Call ahead to your airline and inquire about the size of the aircraft that you will be traveling on and ask if there is room in first-class or the flight attendant closet for you to store a garment bag.

Make sure your maid of honor is at-the-ready to remove your veil for you if it becomes too distracting during the ceremony. She should know how to carefully remove it without causing damage to your hairstyle.

Faux as P

ADVENTURES IN ETIQUETTE

WORDS BY ELAINE HILBELINK

64

A ‘faux pas’ can be described as a social blunder or indiscretion. In the world of fashion, there are many wardrobe choices that may raise eyebrows or cause tongues to wag. Revealing clothing and different tastes are just a few contemporary contenders for a potential ‘faux pas.’ Below, we’re answering some burning questions about wedding fashion blunders. destinationido.com

Tattoos have definitely become more commonplace in our culture and acceptable among many. That being said, there are some church venues that may have restrictions and there are people who take issue with body art. To me, the power struggle forming between you and your future mother-inlaw is a greater issue. Forming respectful relationships is critical to harmony in the years to come. Talk to her about the importance of expressing yourself, but also listen to her perspective. See if you can think of possibilities to make this a win-win situation. One bride chose to use sheer detachable sleeves to camouflage her tattoos during the wedding ceremony and removed them for the reception. Fostering mutual respect within families can be an investment in your future happiness.

If the ‘provocative’ family member is the mother or the mother-in-law, it is appropriate to consult them about their attire. It is customary for the mothers to choose colors and styles that complement the bridal party and are not conflicting with each other. In that case, you can have some input to help the mothers make decisions. If it is a guest that is the ‘fashion floozy,’ let the tongues wag and the eyes linger. You cannot control everything!

I have a handful of tattoos that my mother-in-law insists I cover up for my wedding day. I consider them a part of my identity and am proud to show off my tattoos. Should I stand my ground or acquiesce to keep the peace? Is there a general rule when it comes to tattoos and weddings?

2

My husband and I are traveling to a part of the world we’ve never been to before for our honeymoon. I take pride in my personal style and love to wear the latest trends, but I’m concerned about cultural restrictions. Is there a resource for finding out fashion taboos in different parts of the world, i.e. what destinations expect covered shoulders and/or ankles? Also, what accessories do you consider a must-have for instances like this? When traveling abroad it is imperative to be aware of the cultural restrictions you may encounter at your destination. A good place to begin your research is at the U. S. State Department website. You can also Google the countries you will be visiting and find dress codes. I discovered a site called whattowearonvacation.com. One visitor to Thailand found that neither sex was permitted to enter the temple with shoulders, knees or ankles uncovered. The Middle East has many fashion and behavior rules that visitors need to be aware of. Research prior to traveling and bringing a large scarf and a shrug to cover your shoulders will help you avoid ‘fashion faux pas.’

3

I’ve worked hard to get in shape for my wedding, so I chose a wedding dress that will show off my figure. But, my soon-to-be husband’s family is quite conservative. Is there a way to accessorize my gown to make it more demure for my ceremony and then remove it for my reception?

5

I’m getting ready to go wedding dress shopping and am super stressed out! I have a strong idea of what I want and the types of dresses I want to try on. My fiancé is very opinionated about style and what he feels I should wear on the big day. The problem is, our visions are total opposites. I want something more classic and he wants a dress that will show off my body. How much should I take my fiancé’s opinion into account when wedding dress shopping? When you are selecting your wedding dress, you need to choose a style that you feel beautiful and comfortable in. It is not uncommon for brides to choose one dress for the ceremony and another for the reception. Perhaps you might go for the classic look that you desire for the ceremony and then change to something more trendy for the dancing. Hopefully, your groom is not so controlling that he would overshadow your wishes. In days gone by, the groom had no clue what the bride would wear until she walked down the aisle! No matter what you wear, you will look your best and make his jaw drop.

6

I’ve heard horror stories from some of my friends about their wedding dress shopping experience. Some of them felt pressured or had their feelings hurt by the people they brought. Are there general guidelines to making wedding dress shopping as pleasant an experience as possible? It’s something I’ve looked forward to since I was a little girl and I don’t want to be let down. It would be my suggestion that you limit the number of guests you choose to accompany you as you select your dress. The more people there are, the more tastes and opinions will be vocalized. It is like too many cooks in a kitchen. Make sure the people you do include are trusted friends or family you can communicate well with. If someone is not invited to join you in the purchase of your gown, they might accompany you to a fitting. Gown shopping is a classic case of ‘less is more.’

SPRING & SUMMER 2018

ADVENTURES IN ETIQUETTE

There are many removable accessories available to create a more modest look for the ceremony. “Detachable collars, sleeves, boleros and capes are just a few items that are available to tone down your look. The bridal salon where you chose your dress may have accessories to complement your gown, so start there,” says Sheri Rasmussen, owner of Sew Perfect.

My tropical destination wedding is rapidly approaching and I’m concerned about a family member’s style and whether or not she will wear something appropriate to the wedding. She tends to dress very provocatively and it often makes people uncomfortable. Since she’s going to be in all of the family photos, is it okay to ask to pre-approve her outfit? She’s easily offended and I don’t know how to broach the subject without hurting her feelings.

Who said love isn’t a numbers’ game? This Palm Springs photo shoot is all about geometry – from the pentagon-shaped ceremony arch to the intricately patterned chairs and centerpieces. This edgy concept (no pun intended!) marries desert glam and relaxed sophistication. The trendy, geometric gold details are offset by a classic, natural color palette of green, cream and warm hues. With the Colony Palms Hotel as the backdrop, vintage details combine beautifully with symmetrical shapes and geode-inspired patterns. No matter your chosen wedding destination, there’s brilliance to be found in this “Edgy Inspiration in Palm Springs” photo shoot. 2

aving traveled through many romantic parts of the world on behalf of Destination I Do, it is no surprise that a few have become favorites. Destinations that beckon me to return time and time again. The British Isles never disappoint, whether exploring the countryside by car or cruising along the coast. The people are welcoming, the scenery is spectacular and the wealth of history draws you back to romantic times long past.

England This time our journey started and ended in Southampton, the nearest port to London, sailing on Princess Cruises’ Caribbean Princess. For 12 magical days we experienced ports-of-call in Ireland, Scotland, England and France and all the amenities of the recently refurbished ship.

St. Patrick’s Cathedral

Channel Islands After settling into our comfy cabin, our first stop was the Channel Island of Guernsey. It may not be large, but its cobbled streets, medieval castle and Little Chapel make it one of the places where people routinely want to escape for a few days…or years. This wellsituated island has been captured and recaptured by the French and English many times over for good reason.

Dublin

Tucked on Ireland’s east coast, Dublin has amazing energy with its young population, delicious libations and city treasures ready to explore. With over 1,000 pubs, Ireland’s oldest university and the gorgeous St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin is definitely a place where there are plenty of fun things to do.

Emerald green countryside, coastal splendor and historical treasures are all part of the Belfast experience. Our choice was to drive along the magnificent Antrim Coast to the Giant’s Causeway, considered by some to be the “Eighth Wonder of the World.” According to one myth, the giant, Fin McCool, used the basalt columns of the naturally formed causeway to travel from Ireland to Scotland to visit his lover, a Scottish giantess. Proof that romance has been part of the region for many years.

79

Scotland

Inveraray Castle

We drove on to Scotland through beautiful countryside from the port of Glasgow to discover Loch Lomond and the adorable town of Luss. This enchanting lakeside village would be my hands-down pick for a destination wedding with its picturesque stone church and rose covered cottages.

When we disembarked in Edinburgh, we chose to drive to the quaint coastal town of St Andrews. Known primarily as the birthplace of golf, St Andrews is also where the royal romance budded between the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge while they attended university. How could Destination I Do not visit? The city of Edinburgh also has much to experience, including Edinburgh Castle that sits above the city and the historic Royal Mile. We definitely have to return to see more of the city sites! Belfast

Inverness is the largest city in the Scottish Highlands and if you are a fan of “Outlander,” many of the sites would be familiar, including the historic battle site at Culloden Moor. It is also the port for visiting Loch Ness, the rumored home of the legendary sea monster “Nessie.” There were no sightings for us, but the lake was beautiful and we explored Urquhart Castle. (We also decided not to own a castle as they tend to get plundered.)

Paris

In addition to the British Isles, we had the wonderful opportunity to add the magnificent, iconic city of Paris on to our journey. Paris has to be one of the most beautiful cities in the world, especially at night. The Eiffel Tower, Champs-Éysées, Arc de Triomphe, Louvre museum, Notre-Dame Cathedral and nearby Palace of Versailles are all must-see destinations for any couple seeking a romantic experience. Without a doubt, being on the Caribbean Princess for 12 days was a delight and we learned that saying “I do” on the high seas has never been easier or more idyllic. Princess Cruises, the original “love boat,” broke ground in 1998 with the first wedding ceremony at sea conducted by the ship’s captain. When we spoke with the captain of the Caribbean Princess, Marco Fortezze, he expressed that he welcomed the opportunity to officially tie the knot for his guests.

or couples seeking romance along with exotic culture and breathtaking scenery, it’s hard to go wrong with Thailand, the Land of a Thousand Smiles. The friendly people, stunning temples, fabulous food, city nightlife and gorgeous beaches all add up to one perfect honeymoon destination. The only issue: how to decide between a city or a beach honeymoon. The solution: combine the best of the two with a Bangkok and beach itinerary.

City of Angels Bangkok, the sexy city center of Thailand, may seem frenetic at first, but the Anantara Riverside Bangkok Resort whisks away the noise of the bustling city, replacing it with an island of calm right on the Chao Phraya River. The resort is spread around 11 acres

The hotel makes it easy for you to view Bangkok’s highlights with a dinner cruise on Manohra, a restored antique barge that docks just steps from the pool bar. Sail as the sun sets, passing landmarks such as the glittering golden Wat Arun temple, multi-tiered Sathorn Bridge and the glowing Grand Palace, while nibbling on Thai treats like spicy mango salad and stirfried noodles. Or, see the city’s highlights with one of the hotel’s Streetwise Guru itineraries such as a private tour of the klongs (canals) on a flower-decked longtail boat, a culinary-focused street food

walking tour, or sightseeing to visit the Temple of the Reclining Buddha of Wat Pho. Shopping and nightlife are just across the river at the Asiatique market, easily reached by Anantara’s shuttle boat.

Beach Paradise The tropical island of Phuket, a quick one-hour flight from Bangkok, is renowned for its powdery beaches and turquoise Andaman Sea. But to truly honeymoon in style, leave the crowded beaches near the airport and head 40 minutes northwest to Layan, where the Anantara Layan Phuket Resort is nestled on eight miles of private coastline on Bangtao Bay, part of a secluded national park. Follow the palm tree-lined entrance to the elegant glass-enclosed lobby where you’ll find Sala Layan for stylish Mediterranean-inspired beachfront meals and a private wine cellar for tastings. A sparkling pool stretches onto the sand SPRING & SUMMER 2018

Honeymooners Jake and Tara Genen chose Thailand for the gorgeous beaches, but came back raving about other highlights. “The warmth of the people and the culture really wowed us,” said Jake. “Plus, the food was so amazing, we even took a cooking lesson so we could make Pad Thai at home.” If you’re inspired to do the same, Spice Spoons, Anantara’s cooking school, offers hands-on lessons that begin with chef-led tours of the local farmer’s market and conclude with mastery of recipes such as Tom Kha Gai (coconut chicken soup) created in Dee Plee, the resort’s modern open-air Thai restaurant. Other ways to spend non-beach time include Muay Thai boxing (work on your cross jabs now, make up back at the villa later), relaxing at the spacious spa or sailing to nearby islands. In Thailand, local carriers AirAsia and Thai Airways offer inexpensive tickets on the Bangkok-Phuket route. GETTING HERE: It’s worth the 17 hours from Los Angeles or New York to get to this exotic honeymoon paradise. EVA Air is a top flight option to Bangkok, with Premium Economy seats that offer a business class experience for just a few hundred dollars more than traditional economy; flights transfer through the shopping mecca of glitzy Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport.

For the ultimate honeymoon hideaway, choose one of the 15 cliffside Layan Residences by Anantara. These luxurious glass-fronted villas have sweeping views of the sea and trees from the plush modern rooms that frame the villa’s infinity pool (dive down to the glass underwater window that peeks into the villa’s private two-table massage room). Residences have private live-in butlers who can bring you freshly squeezed juice to sip on a chaise lounge and a personal chef who whips up your breakfast every day. The chef also creates Dining by Design dinners for two high up on your personal deck or down on the beach, including seafood pulled straight from the ocean and served under the stars.

he shimmering waters of Lake Como could be right out of a movie set. In addition to singer John Legend tying the knot on Lake Como, actress Emily Blunt got married there too. During a recent visit to Grand Hotel Tremezzo, I saw one couple engaged in a candlelit proposal, another couple’s wedding being set up and a bride and groom speeding off into the sunset in one of the hotel’s water taxis; the bride’s long, white veil fluttering behind in the breeze. “We host at least 40 couples (wedding and honeymooners) a month,” says Delia Facchini, the hotel’s Public Relations Manager. “This seductive resort offers stunning views over the lake and town of Bellagio, which, with its twinkling lights, creates the perfect backdrop for a wedding or candlelit dinner for two.”

For ceremonies at the hotel, stunning locations abound, including the sunken back garden.

Most couples reserve one of the lakeview suites, such as the Honeymoon Suite Maria with a rose-colored sitting room, taupe-white bedroom and round, destinationido.com

“We like to reserve the enchanting space for the most special occasions, like wedding ceremonies or a couple’s first dinner together as husband and wife,” says Facchini. “That is why – in the sunken back garden – we have reserved a very special spot for couples, for romantic suppers and unforgettable private encounters.”

For pre- or post-wedding bliss, visit the hotel’s 1,000-foot spa housed in the 18th century Villa Emilia. It has the only hammam on Lake Como and a heated indoor infinity pool overlooking the water.

Not surprisingly, the cuisine at Grand Hotel Tremezzo is superb. Enjoy lattes and a buffet breakfast on the sunny terrace of La Terrazza Restaurant, which at night serves elegantly prepared fish, pastas, meats and the chef’s signature saffron risotto topped with gold leaf. For more casual meals, stop by L’Escale Trattoria and Wine Bar, T Pizza or T Beach, where you can sip bubbly at the Pommery Champagne bar overlooking the hotel’s “floating” lake pool. Although you may be tempted to simply snuggle at the hotel, stroll next door to Villa Carlotta to see its sun-dappled botanical garden. Bellagio (only ten SPRING & SUMMER 2018

minutes by ferry across the lake) has fabulous shopping – jewelry, shoes, linen and lingerie – in the small shops lining the hilly back streets, while the 18th century Villa del Balbianello, accessible by the hotel’s water taxi, is where the 2006 James Bond remake, “Casino Royale,” was filmed, along with “Star Wars: Episode II.” But, of course, Grand Hotel Tremezzo is where you’ll set your most romantic scenes. It’s “that happy sunny place” says actress Greta Garbo in the 1932 film, “Grand Hotel,” where you and your sweetheart will star in the most amorous moments of your life, whether it’s saying, “I do” or celebrating having just said it.

Additionally, guests can now marry or host a soiree at nearby Villa Sola Cabiati, built in the 1600s for a descendent of Charles II, King of Naples. Be sure to see the bed Napoleon Bonaparte once slept in on the second floor.

re you looking for a destination wedding or honeymoon location that’s equal parts relaxation and adventure? On the Caribbean island of St. Lucia, you can have the best of both worlds – beautiful beaches and rugged rainforest. Despite being farther south than Caribbean honeymoon hotspots like Anguilla and Nevis, St. Lucia makes for a more convenient travel itinerary. You can skip the puddle jumper and interisland ferry since there are direct flights into Hewanorra International Airport (UVF) from most major U.S. East Coast cities. I’ve traveled extensively throughout the Caribbean and thought I had completed

my love affair with this part of the world. However, St. Lucia had eluded me and the rugged, volcanic Piton Mountains were calling my name. After landing at UVF, my partner and I exited customs to find our prearranged shuttle to the Marigot Bay Resort and Marina by Capella. Marigot Bay is located on the northwest side of the island about an hour’s drive from the airport. It’s the location that makes this particular resort on St. Lucia special. It’s huddled on a lush, tropical bay with a marina filled with sleek sailboats and yachts. Capella Hotels is known for outstanding service and complimentary amenities like snacks by the pool and an afternoon in-room treat like ice-cold Piton beers and fresh cookies. If you’re looking to wet your whistle, be sure to book a rum tasting at the Rum Cave with Ron. If you’re lucky, he’ll whip up one of his famous “St. Lucian Spiced Lagers.” Pair your beverage at the Pool Bar with a Bonito Tuna Maki Roll or Aguachile Ceviche. Also, kick up the romance

by booking a private dinner for two in the hotel’s Tree House. If you get the urge to get out and see the sites, a drive around the island to the Piton Mountains is a must. If you’re in really great shape and are looking for a honeymoon challenge, you can book the Gros Piton Hike. To get the adrenaline pumping without the will of a marathoner, you could also opt for zip-lining, sailing or snorkeling. No matter how you choose to spend your time, take the St. Lucian motto to heart and “Let Her Inspire You.”

Tip: Glavas also loves a regional spin. “We encourage our couples to add Colorado touches to their cocktail hour menu, such as our bison tartar on grilled filoni. That way, guests can get a little taste of high alpine cuisine in small bites rather than committing to it as their entrée choice.”

nnina and Jordon wanted to combine everything they love most for their destination wedding – the ocean, golf, their loved ones and, of course, each other. The couple’s dream location was Italy, but they found an alternative closer to home with The Resort at Pelican Hill in Newport Coast, California. “The second we pulled in and I saw the beautiful pine trees, we knew it was a magical place,” explains the bride. “The landscaping, architecture and hospitality made me feel like I was in Italy. Once we got to try the food, the Resort at Pelican Hill instantly became our favorite place on earth.” When looking back on their wedding and planning experience, the couple can’t say enough about their wedding planner, Natalie Good with A Good Affair Wedding and Event Production. “I knew that it would be challenging to plan a destination wedding and I wasn’t sure if I wanted a local coordinator or one that was [at home] in Houston who I could meet with all the time,” says Annina. “I had seen [Natalie Good’s] work on social media and knew that I loved her creativity, but it wasn’t until meeting her in person that we realized the planning process was going to be a breeze. She took the time not only to get to know us, but to find bits and pieces to bring all of our culture, taste and style together to create a cohesive weekend.”

For their ceremony, the couple maximized their setting and mingled their personalities. “The Italian rotunda at Pelican Hill has a view that combines my and Jordon’s true loves besides each other – golf and the ocean! I never thought I would see Jordon cry on a golf course, but there is a first time for everything.”

While the couple loved the views and landscape of the resort, they knew they wanted to have an indoor reception. Thus, it was left to their wedding planner and designer to bring the outside in. “The ballroom was truly transformed,” reminisces Annina. “Natalie brought the gorgeous greenery indoors and designed beautiful cabanas with chandeliers that I fell in love with. I still get butterflies when I think about our wedding day. It was so much fun having a destination wedding. It really felt like a fun vacation with all of our friends and family.”

ichael and Ricky’s love story is classic and uncomplicated. They met through a mutual friend, quickly fell in love and the rest, as they say, was history. When it came time for these two world travelers to tie the knot, they wanted a similar experience and feel for their destination wedding: timeless and stress-free. It was an easy decision for the couple to choose the ‘where’ – Maui, Hawaii. “We enjoy vacationing with friends and family, so we thought this would be a great opportunity to bring our closest family and friends together for our special day in our favorite destination

on earth,” says Michael. As an added bonus, a lot of the couple’s guests had never been to Maui before and the RSVPs quickly started pouring in. These lovebirds share a passion for exotic, tropical destinations, so what was it that made Maui so special? “We fell in love with Maui during our first visit in 2012 during a spur of the moment trip for my birthday,” says Michael. “With whale-watching season in full effect and the tranquility of the island, we were in love! We knew then that Maui was the place we’d be married, as we always knew we wanted a destination wedding.” With 87 guests scheduled to attend, Michael and Ricky, with the help of their wedding planner, went above and beyond to ensure their guests got the most out of their trip. The couple helped to coordinate room blocks, transportation and several pre- and post-wedding events. Guests were treated to a welcome event, post-wedding lū’au and a catamaran tour to the island of Lanai. “We wanted our guests to fall in love with Maui just as we had over the years, so we thought what better way than to have several optional events and activities?” says Michael.

The couple’s wedding weekend kicked off with a buffet-style dinner on the beach followed by desserts and a beach bonfire. On the day of the wedding, the festivities didn’t stop there. “People went for breakfast at the beach and it was nice to see guests using the kayaks, swimming or taking a nap on the sand,” says the bride. Later that day, a taco lunch and pool party was set up with bartenders serving guests cocktails in the pool. “I didn’t want to leave! teve and Heather describe their relationship as “imanta,” meaning they have a magnetic connection, which is perfect because the couple wed at the Imanta Resort in Punta de Mita, Mexico. The couple had traveled to this location on a whim and knew instantly that this was the place they wanted to get married because they felt a special connection there. For the couple’s wedding, they got to share that special place with 32 guests, complete with a weekend full of amazing food, great people and memorable experiences.

“Imanta is our special getaway,” says the couple. “There was something about having everyone at one hotel, under one roof all weekend and keeping things intimate and small that made it so great.”

bbey is an interior designer by trade, so it’s no surprise she had a very specific and unique style in mind for her and Ariel’s Adairsville, Georgia destination wedding. She conveyed to her wedding planner, Christopher Confero, that she wanted a “black tie, summer camp vibe” with “perfectly imperfect” floral arrangements. Ask and you shall receive! “After sending Christopher my inspiration boards, I just watched the magic happen,” recalls the bride. “Christopher was the heart and soul of the operation and I put my full faith in him.” In addition to the style of their nuptials, the couple also had a specific location in mind. “We didn’t want our wedding to just be another night out in the city or another traffic jam out to the Hamptons,” says Abbey. “We wanted all of our family and friends to be stuck together in the middle of nowhere, so they were forced to meet, mingle and celebrate for three days straight.” Abbey and Ariel found their dream venue just minutes from the bride’s grandparent’s home in Northern Georgia – Barnsley Resort. “We loved that we weren’t going to have a standard ballroom wedding and felt like Barnsley was worth the schlep,” explains the bride.

When the big day finally arrived, roughly 200 guests joined the couple for a traditional Jewish ceremony in a meadow with an aisle lined in baby’s breath. Following sentimental “I do’s,” the couple’s guests enjoyed a cocktail hour amongst the ground’s ruins and beneath bistro lights. As the dinner bell rang, the guests made their way to a reception on the lawn decorated with falling flower displays and dramatic greenery sprays. Throughout the planning process, the couple was only at odds with their wedding planner once. What was their quarrel? How big the dance floor should be. Abbey and Ariel wanted it bigger and, just as the couple had expected, the dance floor was packed all night with joyous guests and celebratory steps. When we asked the couple for their number one piece of advice, the bride said, “Don’t try to micromanage your guests – everyone is an adult and is fully capable of [taking care of] themselves.”

We wanted all of our family and friends to be stuck together in the middle of nowhere, so they were forced to meet, mingle and celebrate for three days straight.

A lot of people were going to have to travel no matter where we did it, so why not get everyone to go on vacation to celebrate?

shley and Zach are huge travelers, which made a Costa Rica destination wedding a no-brainer. Inspired by a fabulous trip they had taken before, the couple decided that Lola’s at Playa Avellanas was the perfect location for their big day. “Zach’s family is from Wisconsin, Ashley’s from Canada and a lot of our friends are all over. Based on this, a lot of people were going to have to travel no matter where we did it, so why not get everyone to go on vacation to celebrate?” say the newlyweds. Before the day of the wedding, the couple planned some fun activities with their friends and family to give them the best Costa Rican experience destinationido.com

and spend as much time as possible with everyone. They adventured on a catamaran tour and hosted a rehearsal dinner in a penthouse apartment with a make-your-own taco bar. The groom’s gift to the groomsmen was to take them on a trip the day before the wedding for snorkeling, riding ATVs and zip-lining. The sunset ceremony was held on the sand in front of Lola’s and was simple, heartfelt and breathtaking. “It’s a hidden gem and local surf spot that you would have to know about in order to get there,” says the couple. Local cuisine, an open bar, s’mores and a sundae bar all culminated in a major dance party.

“Since the venue and natural beauty were already there, we didn’t feel like we needed to over decorate. We kept things simple with flowers and dipdyed napkins the bride had made,” says the couple. destination wedding is the perfect place to bring everyone together, especially if you know from the start that your family and friends will have to travel. Laurence, from England, and Kate, from the United States, live in England and got engaged in Florida, so what better place to tie the knot than Key West? The couple’s small wedding was shared with 60 friends and family who got to enjoy a fun weekend getaway full of events – from a sunset cruise to the Key West Conch Tour Train. “We wanted a place that could feel like a fun getaway for our guests and we also wanted to have lots to do, so Key West was perfect,” says the bride. After a lot of Internet searches, reading wedding magazines and hiring a planner, the couple’s wedding came together in the courtyard gardens of the Hemingway Home. “An array of white flower centerpieces stood at the front and beautiful lanterns at the back,” says Kate. “Guests were greeted with Champagne and rum punch so that everyone could have a drink during our ceremony. We wanted a relaxed atmosphere with a brief, heartfelt ceremony and I think we accomplished just that.” REAL-LIFE WEDDINGS

The reception kicked off with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, followed by a delicious buffet dinner and lots of dancing. The couple even added a few personal touches, including the groom’s favorite rum and mini-cakes and tarts for dessert, instead of a traditional wedding cake. SPRING & SUMMER 2018

Laurence and Kate felt that having a destination wedding was best for them and offered a bit of advice for couples planning their own. “If you can fit it into your budget, I recommend thinking about a planner or at least using a coordinator package, so that you don’t have to worry about anything on the actual day of the wedding,” the bride says. “My planner was there every step of the way and I honestly couldn’t have done it without her. No matter what you choose, planning and the day itself will be stressful, so anything you can do in advance to relieve that stress will be beyond worth it!”

REAL-LIFE WEDDINGS

We knew that we wanted to create a laid-back, fun and special environment for our wedding and, after exploring a few of the nearby islands, we knew St. John would be the most special to us and the best fit for our guests.

S

al and Irene were drawn to a destination wedding in St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands for two reasons – it was where they got engaged and they loved the idea of getting their loved ones out of a frigid winter and into Caribbean temperatures. “We both have large families and when it came time to plan the wedding, we were excited about the idea of gathering a more intimate group of our closest family and friends for a few days versus a few hours,” says Irene. The couple’s intuition was correct and 75 excited and eager guests joined them in St. John. Unfortunately, a high tide interfered with the couple’s plans to say “I do” on the sand, but looking back, Irene wouldn’t have had their ceremony any other way.

“Not to toot our own horns, but man, it was magical,” says the bride. “Our families walked out to steel drums – setting the perfect island vibe, but allowing us to feel close to home by playing some of our favorite songs. As I walked down the aisle, I did my absolute best to take it all in. Our gorgeously decorated driftwood arch with my soon-to-be husband awaiting me at the end of the aisle had me eager to get to him, but I was also overwhelmed with the picture-perfect setting that surrounded us.” While the wedding itself was a dream, the couple says the planning process wasn’t a piece of cake. “[It wasn’t easy] to be completely honest,” says Irene. “However, I don’t think many couples would say planning any type of wedding is easy and the extra time and energy we spent in planning a destination wedding was one thousand percent worth it in the end.”

dreamy Palm Beach destination wedding was the clear choice for Tera and Nick. The couple met in the sixth grade and Tera spent countless family vacations on the island. “Nick also fell in love with the island during his first visit and proposed there too!” says the bride. Because of the special place the couple holds in their hearts for Palm Beach, they and 165 of their closest friends and family made the trip to Florida to celebrate their W-day. The couple said planning a destination wedding was a breeze thanks to the talented people who helped out every step of the way. Internet searches, wedding magazines, personal referrals and their wedding planner were all important resources during the planning process. Before the wedding, the couple hosted a welcome party in Palm Beach and a pool party at The Breakers, which was a nice opportunity for the guests to enjoy some sunshine before the wedding activities. “A dream come true!” was the only way the couple could describe their wedding. “My cousin officiated the wedding, so that made the ceremony even more special and personal,” says the happy bride.
