agical places let you take a little piece of them home with you when you leave. It’s why we still remember special holidays from years ago – golden memories, faded but not forgotten. Kiama is one such place – barely 90 minutes from Sydney but a world away from worry.
So what is it that makes a place like Kiama so special? Is it the people? (We are quite lovely.) The almost embarrassing abundance of natural wonders? (#sorrynotsorry) The sheer variety of experiences and thriving local produce? (Yum.) It's all of those things – and so much more. We invite you now to explore these pages and create your own uniquely special Kiama visit. What magical memories will you take home with you?...

Kiama BLOWHOLES, BEACHES AND BUSTLE
K
iama is the region’s main township, its name derived from the Aboriginal word kiarama, meaning “place where the sea makes a noise”. This is no doubt in reference to the famous Kiama Blowhole (especially noisy in a southeast swell) and its boisterous smaller sibling a few kilometres to the south. Located near the centre of town, Kiama Blowhole is a beacon for tourists, sitting alongside an actual beacon in the form of the Kiama Lighthouse. Whether it’s the 360 degree views from this spot or the fact that the main Visitors Centre is also located here – this is the ideal place to get your bearings. And you’ll quickly discover there’s plenty to explore. As the region’s main commercial centre, Kiama gives you permission to indulge yourself silly across the full gamut of cafés, bars, restaurants and shopping delights on offer – most within easy walking distance (while a few others will reward you for going the extra mile). The town also displays its heritage with pride –
settled in the 1820s, and with many fine examples of 19th century architecture. Meanwhile, the 21st century is ever-present, with free wireless internet on offer throughout the town centre. Nature’s kiss is never far from view – be it the golden beaches that pop into sight along the town’s streets, the iconic Norfolk pines that tower gracefully throughout the town, or splendid ocean pools that are popular with swimmers all year round. The harbour, once busy with ships carrying a bounty of timber and basalt rock, is today home to fishing and leisure boats, as well as the odd hungry pelican! Part regional civic centre, part slice of paradise, Kiama has managed to keep a decidedly relaxed vibe despite its clear popularity as a tourist centre and pressure to grow. Even in summer and holiday weekends, when thousands roll into town, relaxation remains the order of the day – and why wouldn’t it be?

Jamberoo PUTTING THE 'HEART' INTO HEARTLAND
G
reen rolling hills, quiet rural lanes laden with commuting cattle, and the patient pattern of paddocks filled with feed. Welcome to dairy country. And this is the ridiculously picturesque village of Jamberoo – its very name instantly putting you at ease and inviting you to relax and slow your pace amongst a lush and scenic country setting, dotted with farm stays and unique accommodation. Located just 10 meandering minutes inland from the coastline that defines so much of Australian life, this town proudly presents an idyllic alternative. Jamberoo is a town with a main street that dares to turn 90 degrees and continue on like nothing happened. It’s a town with a stream that has already tumbled from the escarpment and is yet to have its wide meeting with the sea. It’s a town that regularly gathers at the historic pub – visitors and locals alike; parking out front, good times out back. But more than all of this, it’s a town that keeps you guessing. The gateway to a rainforest. Namesake to a nearby world-class water theme-park. Home to the traffic-stopping red Illawarra Shorthorn cattle breed. Where you can grab a book from the 24/7 street library or grab a hook on a zip line tour. A haven for nature lovers, thrill seekers and Sunday drivers alike – punching above its weight and delivering breathtaking blows at every turn. Jamberoo’s fertile valley may not seem like inland Australia, but it’s very easy to fall in love with it all the same.

Gerringong & GERROA THE ORIGINAL SEASIDE VILLAGES
I
t’s always a treat to round the last of the escarpment-hugging Kiama bends and take in the sweeping southern vista beyond. The gentle curve of Gerringong’s Werri Beach; the foreground lagoon; tree-lined headland and Seven Mile Beach in the distance. You are barely five minutes south of Kiama, but it’s already clear that a new landscape beckons. It’s not just the postcode that’s different – life moves at a more sedate pace down this way. Despite population growth, Gerringong has curiously and miraculously maintained its seaside surf village vibe. That’s not to say it’s a town that time forgot – on the contrary. The recent highway upgrade (which in 2017 will continue further south) brings an ultra-modern welcome mat, and the town centre is abuzz with new residential and commercial developments.
With that however, the town centre remains compact – sitting high up on the hill, a browser’s paradise of homewares, gifts and cafés, along with Australia’s largest independent surf shop. Add markets, monthly cinema events in the town hall and shoreline activities such as swimming and surfing, and it’s a great place to get away from it all without fully disconnecting. A short drive on to Gerroa and you’ll be rewarded with a stunning view of Seven Mile Beach – a wide expanse perfect for surf lessons, diving, windsurfing and swimming. Gerroa marks the southern border of the region, and an apt place to say farewell – just as Charles Kingsford Smith did back in 1933 when he used the beach as a runway to fly across the Tasman Sea to New Zealand. Gerringong might just be Australia’s biggest small town. And Gerroa’s happy holiday headland is a rare delight, with its front row seats to the ocean. You simply can’t help but slow down and enjoy the leisurely pace.

Minnamurra & BOMBO RIVERS, ROCKS AND REALLY NICE VIEWS
T
here’s a remarkable symmetry along the Kiama coastline. Whereas the southern border is formed by the arrival of Crooked River to the ocean at Gerroa, up north it’s the turn of Minnamurra River – a popular safe swimming, kayaking and paddle boarding spot for all ages, with its sandy shores and tidal personality. Stand atop the nearby grassy headland, and you’ll be guaranteed an amazing view of the entire show – from the delightfully secluded Mystics Beach to the shifting sands and currents of the river, lush golf fairways and unmissable offshore Rangoon Island (named after an 1870 shipwreck) – the strong, silent type. It’s here at the river’s boat ramp and reserve that the Kiama Coast Walk begins its 22km journey to Gerringong, and these
first few kilometres are arguably some of the best. The ocean is front and centre from the new whale watching platform as you stroll south, while popular surf spot Jones’ Beach ends at the world-famous photogenic Cathedral Rocks. Further on, the short detour to beautiful sheltered Boneyard beach is a must do. (Just don’t tell the locals that we sent you.) Carry on south and you’ll understand why Bombo headland’s dramatic “out of this world” backdrops are a popular choice for location scouts and instagrammers alike – the basalt columns and naturally weathered rock formations hinting at the geological pedigree of this area. Meanwhile, you won’t need hints to find your way once the railway line, Bombo beach and Kiama lighthouse come into view.

The unusual basalt columns are particularly impressive and are a legacy of the blue metal quarrying in the 1880s and 1900s. 4. Frequently ASKED QUESTIONS
OUR FRIENDLY KIAMA VISITORS CENTRE TEAM HAVE ALL THE ANSWERS!
Q: How should I pronounce “Kiama”? A: Think of how you would say “I AM A” and it rhymes with that. So “I AM A visitor to KIAMA”. Easy! Q: Where is the blowhole? A: At the top of the hill behind the lighthouse. Or listen for the “whoosh”.
Q: Do you have any silver wavy sculptures? A: Yes, we have two. One on Manning Street, outside the Old Council Building (by pedestrian crossing) depicting the Kiama printing legacy. And one at Storm Bay, newly installed in 2016, Bert Flugelman’s 'Making Waves'.
Q: What hours does the blowhole operate? A: Actually, it’s only coin-operated on April Fool's Day. It’s a natural attraction, so it’s at the mercy of weather – especially the wind. The big blowhole is at its “whoosh-iest” in a SE wind, while the Little Blowhole (see page 24) likes to show off in a NE wind. Q: Is the Blowhole better at high tide? A: It's not really affected by tides – more about wind direction. Q: Any good walks/hikes in the area? A: Oh, you’re in for a treat! The Kiama Coast Walk extends 22km from Minnamurra to Gerringong. It even has its own spread (pg 30-31) in this guide. You’ll also find some other great walks on pages 32-33. Q: Where is Minnamurra Rainforest? A: The name is a little misleading, as it’s actually west of Jamberoo – where the Minnamurra River starts (not in the village of Minnamurra, where the river ends). Take the road to Jamberoo and then follow the brown Tourist Drive signs past the town. See pg 32 for more.
Q: Does Kiama have a railway station? A: Yes. Kiama station is on Railway Pde. Approx 2 mins walk to the main street, and a 10-15 min walk to the Blowhole. Kiama to Sydney takes approx 2 hours, while trains continue south to Nowra via Gerringong and Berry. 14
FAQ
|
k i a ma . c o m .a u
Q: Please explain the writing on the lighthouse? A: It commemorates the Anzac spirit 100 years after World War I and was commissioned by Kiama-Jamberoo RSL, using a special process so as not to damage the building. It will remain until 2018. Q: Where is the Sea Cliff Bridge? A: Now that's what you call a bridge! But you’ll need to drive north of Wollongong along the Grand Pacific Drive, following directions to Bulli, Thirroul and Stanwell Park (allow 40-50 minutes). The bridge itself is located between Scarborough and Coalcliff. You can’t miss it! Q: Where are the good fishing spots? A: Check out pg 19 for a list. Remember that if you’re rock fishing (or boating), ensure you wear a lifejacket and have the right safety gear on hand.
northernmost point of New Zealand. On a very clear day, if you look at the horizon hard enough… you still won’t see it – it’s 2000km away!
Q: What can I do if it’s raining? A: There is so much to do! Definitely don’t be afraid to see nature in all its glistening glory – places such as the Minnamurra Rainforest are amazing. (Check out pages 32-33 to see this and other natural attractions to explore in any weather.) Also worth checking out: • Our modern Library and Family History Centre on Railway Parade welcome all visitors (see pg 26).
• Enjoy a cheeky browse, hot drink or massage in the many shops, cafés and day spas around the area. • The Leisure Centre on Havilah Place includes gym/aerobics, hire courts and an indoor pool. • Approx 15 mins north, catch a movie at Event Cinemas Shellharbour, or ride go-karts, go Ten-pin bowling, play indoor mini-golf or visit the HARS Aviation Museum at Albion Park Rail. • Gerringong Town Hall shows its Pics and Flicks film on the first Friday night of each month.
Q: Can I free camp in the Kiama region? A: Great question. While there is no free camping in Kiama town itself (great holiday parks though!), in Jamberoo you can free camp alongside the creek near Kevin Walsh Oval. It’s a nice spot.
• But seriously, nothing beats standing out on Blowhole Point in the driving rain and yelling “IS THIS THE BEST YOU CAN DO??” at the top of your lungs.
Q: If I swam due east from Kiama, where would I end up? A: Assuming you’re an amazing swimmer, you’d arrive at Cape Reinga – the

Family FRIENDLY
WITH SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE, KIAMA IS A BRILLIANT FAMILY DESTINATION
T
here are two words that every parent dreads hearing on a holiday – “I’m bored”. Thankfully they’re just not part of the Kiama vocabulary. There’s simply too much to do – in any season. Family getaways are the things that memories are made of – and Kiama offers something for all ages and tastes. If you’re into all things adrenaline, hit the surf or during the summer months hit one of Jamberoo Action Park’s thrilling water rides – sure to bring out the giddy child in everyone. Prefer your action water-free? Then try the zipline adventure at the Illawarra Fly Tree Top Walk. Or feel free to slow things down at the many beaches, parks and well-equipped playgrounds across the region (see page 19 for a full list as well as picnic spots and BBQs). And in true family style, there is even a Little Blowhole to explore – often more active than its older sibling. Kiama offers an opportunity to link to simpler times and real experiences – without giving up the conveniences of today. Enjoy free Wi-Fi and a coffee while the kids play in Kiama’s Hindmarsh Park. Sample breakfast, lunch or dinner in the region’s many cafés and restaurants – catering to a variety of

tastes and with quality that would rival any high street. Stock up on fresh produce at the weekly markets. If the weather is colder, read or play games at the impressive Kiama Library or enjoy heated splashing all year round at the Kiama Leisure Centre, with 25m lane swimming, kids pool and inflatable pool toy. Or if getting up close and personal with Mother Nature is on the list, then nothing beats a walk through the Minnamurra Rainforest or a section of the Kiama Coastal Walk, with new sights around every corner. And don’t forget stargazing at night, free from the pesky glow of city lights. Kiama’s vast accommodation choices will match your needs and budget. From holiday parks (camp, caravans or cabins) to motels, hotels, self-catering apartments and short-stay holiday homes, you’ll find something that suits the kind of holiday you want. Oh, and one more thing. You’re never far from an ice cream or gelato shop in these parts. After all, what would a family holiday be without that?
Pet FRIENDLY
BECAUSE THEY'RE A PART OF YOUR FAMILY TOO
W
ith more and more holidaymakers choosing to bring their pets with them when they visit our glorious region, we’re pleased to say that Kiama is the teacher’s pet of pet friendly destinations. Furry or feathered friends are welcomed by many of our accommodation providers. And if you’re out walking with your dog, you’ll find water bowls outside many cafés, specific off-leash parks and reserves, clean up bags for any number twos and clearly marked dog-friendly beaches (see more on this below). As usual, responsible pet-ownership applies at all times – allowing every person (and animal) to enjoy Kiama’s stunning environment. GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES OF PET OWNERS IN NSW To ensure the comfort, safety and health of our community, the NSW Companion Animals Act places certain responsibilities on all pet owners. Responsibilities of dog owners under the Act are: • •
If your dog is in a public place (except an approved off-leash area it must be under the effective control of a competent person (over 16 years old) by means of an adequate leash. If your dog is being exercised in an approved off-leash area it must always be under effective control of a competent person (over 16 years old).
• • •
You are not permitted to walk more than four dogs at any one time in an on-leash area or an off-leash area. Greyhounds must be muzzled at all times when in a public place except when approved re-trained “Greenhounds”. If your dog defecates in a public place it is an offence not to remove the faeces immediately.
SOME IMPORTANT POINTS TO REMEMBER • • • •
All off-leash areas are established as joint use facilities. Bombo Beach and Werri Beach are time restricted off-leash areas where dogs may also swim. Off-leash areas border environmentally senstive natural rock platforms, creeks and beaches where dogs are prohibited. Off-leash areas form part of large reserve areas where boundaries must be adhered to.
We provide off-leash areas at the following venues: • • • • • • • • •
Minnamurra Headland Bombo Beach Headland Kaleula Reserve, Kiama Marsden Headland, Kiama Gerringong Headland Black Head, Gerroa Jones Beach (Southern End) - Swimming Area Bombo Beach - Swimming Area - Sunrise to Sunset Werri Beach - Swimming Area - Sunrise to Sunset

Ocean POOLS
NOTHING BEATS A SUNRISE SWIM AT ONE OF OUR GLORIOUS POOLS
W
e’re lucky enough to have four active ocean pools (also called ocean baths or rock pools) in the region. The first – and one of the largest in NSW – was built on the northern side of Kiama harbour in 1877, originally for ladies only and later as a much larger public Olympic Pool until the 1980s when its size was reduced. Today, it’s a great place to swim salt-water laps without being disturbed. A modern shower and toilet block is approx 100m away. The rock pool at Blowhole Point was built in 1888, and has remained largely unchanged, popular with all ages due to its shallow areas and easy access. A modern changing block is located alongside. Further south in Gerringong, the pool at Boat Harbour is the last surviving of an original two pools in that area – built in 1898, again as a ladies pool originally. Today, it is open to all, with an easy sandy sloping entrance, raised seating and relative seclusion. You’ll find the final pool at the south end of Werri Beach – sitting out on the rocky shelf. It just happens to be another great place to see the sunrise and wasn’t actually built until the late 1930s. All four pools are open to the public, free of charge, all year round. They may occasionally be unavailable for Council cleaning.

DISCOVER THE KIAMA REGION ON FOOT…
A
coastal spine to most of the Kiama region, our Coast Walk is arguably one of Australia’s most scenic walking tracks – offering ocean views, unique natural wonders, urban detours, gorgeous beaches and much more. It’s 22km long, but don’t let that scare you. Intrepid wanderers aside, the Kiama Coast Walk was designed to be completed in stages. Whether you stroll or roll, jog or ride, you’ll be able to enjoy the right length journey to suit your timeframe or fitness. For more information and maps, visit the Kiama Visitors Centre at Blowhole Point or go online to www.kiama.com.au
3km walk to the Gerringong train station.
MINNAMURRA RIVER It all starts here – a short stroll from the train (and grab a coffee at the nearby cafe). The headland offers spectacular views.
CATHEDRAL ROCKS Natural remnants of the coastline, and very patient photographic subjects!
BOMBO HEADLAND A detour out to these stone columns is worthwhile. Unlike anything else you’ve seen.
BLOWHOLE POINT The thriving hub of Kiama, home to the big blowhole and lighthouse, with great views any day of the year.
VISITORS CENTRE / PILOT'S COTTAGE MUSEUM Learn more about the region and its history right here.
THE LITTLE BLOWHOLE Tries extra hard, often in a NE wind when its older sibling is quiet. Can be quite spectacular in the right conditions.
DREAMING POLES The beginning of the final stage at Loves Bay features this beautiful Indigenous sculptural art. WERRI LAGOON
Please call the Kiama Visitors Centre to check if the Werri lagoon is open on 02 4232 3322.
WHALE WATCHING PLATFORM During the migration seasons (see page 2), you'll have a great view from this elevated spot.

MINNAMURRA RAINFOREST (BUDDEROO NATIONAL PARK)
Follow Tourist Drive 9 west through Jamberoo to find this rare remnant of subtropical and warm temperate rainforest. The Minnamurra Rainforest offers a glimpse of what vast areas of the Illawarra looked like before white settlement in the area. Experience the peace and serenity while viewing lyrebirds, water dragons, ancient fig trees, rock orchids, elkhorns and lush ferns. Facilities include Visitors Centre and café. Open daily, except Christmas Day, from 9am; gates close at 5pm. NOTE: • Park gates are locked at 5pm
• A park entry fee applies ($AUD)

Time: 1hr Distance: 2.6km Grade: Medium / steep in parts A continuation on from the ‘Loop Walk’, the 2.6 km (return) ‘Falls Walk’ will lead you safely along the canyon cliff edge to the breathtaking upper Minnamurra Falls. This walk is slightly more challenging than the Rainforest Loop.

HODDLES TRACK
Time: 2hrs return Distance: 7km return Grade: Moderate / steep
Park your car at Saddleback Mountain lookout (6 km southwest of Kiama) and follow the green marking posts west, up into the escarpment to Mt Noorinan. This track was originally used to transport produce to Kiama for shipping in the 1800s and at one point stretched all the way west to Bowral. Bird watchers should keep an eye out for Crimson Rosellas, Eastern Bristlebirds and the Golden Whistler. Note: the track is steep in places and can become slippery. Wear sensible shoes.

SPRING CREEK WETLANDS
Time: 30mins Distance: 1.5km return Grade: Easy
Located only a few minutes west of Kiama township, Spring Creek offers a wonderful example of rehabilitated wetlands. To get there, follow Terralong St towards Jamberoo, past the A1 highway turn-off and turn right at the 2nd roundabout into Dido St, then Glenbrook Drive. The entrance to the park is from a small carpark. Walk along the banks of Spring Creek to the lagoon through a variety of regenerating bushland or enjoy the birdlife from the constructed hide. You’ll find numerous waterbirds and common bush birds including Golden-headed Cisticola, Black-fronted Dotterel, Black-faced Cuckoo-shrike and Mistletoebird.
4
SEVEN MILE NATIONAL PARK
Located approximately 15 minutes south of Kiama (turn off the Princes Highway to Gerringong), between the coastal villages of Gerroa and Shoalhaven Heads. The long sweep of Seven Mile Beach is backed by sand dunes and forest. From the end of Beach Road there is an easily accessible walkway (wheelchair friendly) to a viewing platform and the beach. Nearby is a large grassy picnic area with gas barbecues in the pleasant Bangalay Forest setting. From the picnic area there are marked walking tracks through the forest. Camping is not permitted in the park, however there are a good range of options in both Gerroa and Gerringong.

Explore OUR REGION DRIVING
T
here are few things better than getting behind the wheel and discovering a new place. And exploring Kiama by car is an absolute breeze (even breezier if you have a convertible) thanks to the high quality roads and short travel distances. Your biggest hazard will be constantly pulling over to take in the views!
TOURIST DRIVE 9 Taking in some of the best views and roads in the region, this drive takes around 2 hours, beginning in Kiama and winding its way through to the highlands via Jamberoo Mountain Rd. The changes in surroundings (and often temperature!) are dramatic for such a short distance, making this a morning or afternoon well spent.
• Continue on through lush pastures and dairy farms to Jamberoo – perhaps stopping for a meal at the historic pub.
• From the Post Office roundabout, follow Terralong St through the centre of town and over the hill.
• At the top, discover Barren Grounds Nature Reserve, Illawarra Fly Treetop Walk, Carrington Falls and Nellies Glen.
• Continue out of town and left onto Jamberoo Mountain Rd. • Minnamurra Rainforest turnoff is 4km along or continue up the mountain (not suitable for towing or vehicles over 11m).
• On to Robertson, for a pie at the famous Robertson Pie Shop or into town for coffee, collectables and antiques. • Return either the way you came, or down Macquarie Pass, turning right at Albion Park onto Jamberoo Road and back.
SADDLEBACK MOUNTAIN LOOKOUT This quick drive is a great one to “get your bearings” – allow 45min return. • From the Kiama Visitors Centre, follow Manning Street up to the service station.

top of the car park looks south.

icycles provide the ideal pace to take in our compact region. And we have our fair share of communal paths and off road options to suit every skill level – from training wheels to logo covered lycra. More experienced riders will head for the hills – via Jamberoo Valley and beyond, with a natural loop formed by the road that continues to Albion Park (or via Macquarie Pass). Others cycle from Sydney and back. But there's also plenty of fun to be had for the cyclist in between.
FIVE GREAT RIDES 1. 2.
Kiama to Dunmore: 20.4km return Jones Beach to Swamp Rd: 15km return 3. Loves Bay to Werri Beach (off road) via Coast Walk track: 6km 4. Gerringong to Gerroa: 3.4km 5. Kiama to Jamberoo via Long Brush Rd: Approx 17km (hilly!).
