Where Broadway Meets Lauderhill
T
he sights and sounds of Broadway will head south for winter this season as the Lauderhill Performing Arts Center (LPAC) premieres its “Broadway at the LPAC” series, showcasing four iconic musicals of the past and present. Starting in November, LPAC will host productions of West Side Story, Once, Kinky Boots and Beauty and the Beast.
The series marks the first collaboration between LPAC and acclaimed theater company, Prather Productions. For over 45 years, Prather Productions has been recognized for its national and international recitation of classic musicals. “We are extremely excited to bring together our creative team and the incredible local talent that Florida’s east coast has to offer,” says executive producer, Will Prather.
plays in the South Florida community,” says Segur. “In the brief time that season tickets have been on sale, over 1,100 individuals have committed to a full subscription for the entire series.” This year’s musicals run the gamut in style and substance, from the warm-hearted nostalgia of family favorites like West Side Story, to the modern pop and funk sounds of Kinky Boots in its South Florida premiere, featuring songs penned by pop idol Cyndi Lauper. “We strive to make show selections that are
universally appealing,” explains Segur. “We believe Broadway musicals are truly for everyone, regardless of age, gender or background.” Now audience members can also enjoy every kickline and soaring ballad up close. In contrast to conventional staging, these new productions will take advantage of LPAC’s flexible performance space. “The venue’s full capacity is just over 1,100, but we use a smaller audience area for these shows,“ says Segur. “By using a 400-seat layout, we’re able to immerse our audience in the experience, so our guests can feel the show is being performed just for them.”
This Prather partnership provided the perfect opportunity to expand LPAC’s premier musical theater programming, says LPAC general manager, Amanda Segur. “There is absolutely an enthusiastic market for Broadway musicals and

It’s these one-of-a-kind theatrical experiences that make the LPAC stand out in South’s Florida’s vibrant live performance landscape. “On stage we have something intangible that’s very special,” says Segur. “We can create a level of intimacy between performer and audience that most 1100-seat venues can’t boast, where our guests can see the stars up close and personal in every show.”

EVENT GUIDE Lauderhill Holiday Tree Lighting Party 2019 Lauderhill City Hall Dec. 4, 2019 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The holiday spirit illuminates City Hall at this annual free event, starting with the ceremonial lighting of Lauderhill’s official christmas tree, menorah and kinara. Kids can play in real snow, decorate cookies, and meet Santa Claus, Rudolph and Frosty. Guests may also learn about Parks and Recreation’s exciting 2020 programming. Don’t miss delectable holiday fare from local food trucks. lauderhill-fl.gov From humble beginnings to celebrity playground, Inverrary has enjoyed a colorful history. The neighborhood saw massive development in the 1960s. Legendary comedian Jackie Gleason became a local fixture after building his Inverrary estate in 1971. He then launched the Inverrary Classic at Inverrary Country Club and Golf Course, attracting golfing legends like Jack Nicklaus, Hollywood icons Frank Sintatra and Bob Hope, and even former U.S. Presidents Gerald Ford and Richard Nixon. Watch out for the dramatic Inverrary Waterfalls, built by the same imagineering team behind the Walt Disney World parks in Orlando.
One On One With HOA President Tom Harney The Inverrary Association
Inverrary has long attracted snowbird residents seeking sunshine. That’s certainly the case for Inverrary Association president Tom Harney, who has proudly called the neighborhood home since 2001. When not spending his summers sailing up north, Harney enjoys engaging in community life, being a volunteer usher at the Lauderhill Performing Art Center and serving as a member on the Lauderhill Art, Culture and Tourism Board. We spoke more with Harney about Inverrary’s lasting appeal. What first brought you to Inverrary? In one word, the weather. I don’t golf, but I was im-

mediately drawn to the serenity of Inverrary’s open green spaces. What makes Inverrary unique? Certainly the historical aspects of the neighborhood, like Jackie Gleason’s home here in the Hills of Inverrary. The golfing community attracted so many stars over the years. And there’s the beautiful Inverrary Waterfalls. Gleason himself got builders from Walt Disney World to construct it. Primary goals this year for the Association? We’re dedicated to preserving the natural beauty of the community, and making sure they last for the next generation. inverraryonline.com

The tight-knit neighborhood takes its unusual name from a combination of these neighborhoods: Westwood Park, Kennedy Estates and Larkdale. The community became annexed to Lauderhill in 2005, a move championed by beloved former President of the Homeowners Association, James D. Bradley Jr. The James D. Bradley Jr. Park was named in his honor in 2014, and has become West Ken Lark’s cultural core, hosting several outdoor events. When visiting, don’t miss the park’s beautiful mosaic mural “Family Connections.”
One On One With HOA President Willie Mae Cooper West Ken Lark Homeowners Association
Community roots remain strong for the neighborhood’s longtime residents including HOA president, Willie Mae Cooper. The proud Dillard High School grad first called West Ken Lark home when her family moved here in the 1960s. Cooper became active in the HOA in the 1990s when she returned to the neighborhood, inspired by influential local leader, James D. Bradley. We spoke more with Cooper about West Ken Lark’s past and future. What makes West Ken Lark unique? We are truly a loving and caring community. We really do care about each other and we try
to look out for each other. Fondest HOA memories? Definitely working with Mr. Bradley and the team on so many projects together, from planning the Lauderhill annexation to baking pancake breakfasts to raise funds for the African-American Research Library and Cultural Center. Primary goals this year for the Association? We want to connect the generations through community engagement, like a technology program where the youth can teach senior residents new technology skills.

Carnival in Lauderhill DISCOVER THE HEART OF
From costumes to steel pans, celebrate the craftsmanship and tradition of South Florida’s Caribbean Carnival at this year’s spotlight events in Lauderhill. Celebrating its 35th anniversary, Carnival 2019 is back with a colorful calendar of festivities in Lauderhill. Leading up to the road march finale, carnival aficionados should head straight to Lauderhill for a slew of signature events. This year the City will host the ever-popular Junior Carnival, Panorama Competition, and J’ouvert Parade. For many, these tentpole celebrations “are all about embracing our heritage and celebrating Caribbean arts and culture,” say the event organizers. These events attract fans from across the globe, “and with this year’s milestone, we expect a great turnout from our loyal fans coming through to show their love for the event.” “Last year alone brought in over 65,000 attendees over the 5-day

Carnival celebration,” says Yvette Harris, a director of Miami Carnival. “People come for the Caribbean music, food and most of all Caribbean culture. And this year’s concert will include more artists than ever.” The countdown to Carnival has begun, and as time ticks closer towards the highly anticipated week of events, attendees both near and far can explore all the season has to offer in Lauderhill. The festivities culminate with the final grand parade on Sunday, Oct. 13 at the Miami-Dade County Fairgrounds.

Welcome to
J’ouvert
CARNIVAL’S ULTIMATE PRE-PARTY Greet the sunrise in a riot of color and fun at carnival’s messiest celebration. If the main Carnival event is all sequins and sparkle, consider J’ouvert its wilder cousin — the purest expression of the season’s rebellious spirit. At these uninhibited celebrations, set in Lauderhill on October 12 at the Central Broward Park and Broward County Stadium, revelers skip the feathers and sequins in favor of t-shirts and shorts—perfect for getting drenched in gallons of paint, dye, and mud. J’ouvert is “all about letting one’s hair down and completely leaving everything behind,” say the organizers about the iconic event. In contrast to carnival’s other events where participants vie for a title, “there’s no competition, as everybody becomes one for J’ouvert. It’s all about having the greatest time possible without being judged.” The word J’ouvert stems from the French word for “daybreak,” as
the celebrations traditionally begin before sunrise. The festivity traces its roots to carnival’s earliest days, gathering before dawn to celebrate the start of the carnival season. In the Caribbean, the event incorporated West African music and mythology, and after emancipation, it became a deeply symbolic celebration of freedom and creativity. Today’s J’ouvert still features a host of
mythical characters, including the iconic devils. They are hard to miss among the crowd, sporting horns and covered head to toe in vivid color. Revelers can join any of the 26 participating bands, including Bajan Fuh Evah, Generation X, Island Gems, Ju Ju Nation, Natural Disasters and One Island Band. While at the festival, attendees will have the opportunity to purchase authentic Caribbean food and beverages. And for those who want to take a piece of carnival home with them, vendors will also be selling traditional arts and crafts. Kids Steal The Spotlight
See the blossoming talent of our next generation of masqueraders at Junior Carnival. At Miami Carnival, the subtle art of ‘playing mas’ (short for masquerade) isn’t only for adults. Young revelers can enjoy their own spotlight at the annual Junior Carnival, set for Oct. 5 at the Central Broward Park. Children ages 14 and under can join the 12 bands participating at this year’s festivities. Though small in stature, these masqueraders boast big imagination, showcasing the amazing creativity of junior bands like Break Awae Kru, China Kids, D’Junction, Party Room Squad, Royalty Kids and Wassi Babes. Behind each sequin and wire loop lies hours of research and planning to cre-

ate breathtaking costumes that will not only wow the judges, but also capture the imagination of the next generation. Just like the grown ups, these juniors will compete for top performance prizes, including Junior Band of the Year, Junior Queen and King of Carnival, and Junior Female and Male Individuals of the Year. “The separation between the adult and junior showcases allows children to grow and develop in their own age group,” says Kashunda Flatts, the registration coordinator for Royalty Kids. “Here they get to truly learn the ins and outs of carnival on their own terms.”
Beyond the feathers and fun, Junior Carnival also seeks to help children gain a deeper understanding of their island roots. “Junior Carnival lets kids learn not just how to play mas, but also learn about their heritage, and the importance of Carnival in our culture,” says Harris. Catch the Rhythm at Panorama
Watch the best steel pan bands compete for the crown at this annual musical showcase. The Miami Carnival season never feels complete without the sounds of steel pan music in the air, as South Florida’s finest bands battle in Lauderhill for the top spot at the annual Panorama competition. This year’s musical showdown is set for Oct. 11, at Central Broward Park. This year, five steel pan bands are scheduled to vie for the coveted title of Best Band of the Year. All contenders must try to outstyle the reigning champions who tied for first place—the local Lauderhill Steel Ensemble, and New Generation Branches Steel Orchestra from Orlando. Other outstanding groups include the Miami Vibez Steel Orchestra, the Resurrection Steel Orchestra and Stick ‘N Tones Inc. All groups will be judged on their mastery of craft, musical creativity and bold visual impact.
Panorama helps secure the music’s future among a new generation of pan players, while honoring the steel pan’s Trinidadian roots.
The signature event “represents a very special element of carnival,” say the organizers. “The competition is a fierce one. These orchestras are so committed to the music, practicing all year long to hone their artistry.”
That’s why continuing this musical legacy is a labor of love for master players like Dr. Selvon Nanan, president of the Lauderhill Steel Ensemble, which was first founded in 2003. “Our mission is to cultivate cultural awareness of the sound of the Caribbean with people in the local community” notes Nanan.
The competition, however, goes beyond sheer bragging rights. For these bands,
This musical showdown will also include a live performance showcase by the famed
Massy All Stars steel orchestra from Trinidad and Tobago. The acclaimed band has been consistently among the top three orchestras at the premier Trinidad and Tobago Steelband Panorama.
