Inverrary Waterfall, at the intersection of Inverrary Blvd. and Oakland Park Blvd., became the first designated historic landmark in the City of Lauderhill on May 8, 2017. Legend has it, the feature was built by the developer of Walt Disney World at the request of Lauderhill's most famed former resident, actor and comedian Jackie Gleason.
MAYOR KEN THURSTON
As the Mayor of this phenomenal City, I send you all wishes for an awesome, healthy and prosperous 2021! We look for ward to this year with great expectation and excitement for the many opportunities and resources that are available to our residents. Congratulations to Denise D. Grant, who was selected Vice Mayor and our three new Commissioners, Sarai “Ray” Martin, Melissa P. Dunn and Lawrence “Jabbow” Martin. We look forward to their contributions and ideas.
During these challenging times, the City of Lauderhill has done an excellent job of continuing to assist its residents in alternate ways that are accessible to everyone, while keeping us as safe as possible and in compliance with all county, state, and federal or ders. As a member of the Broward League of Cities Task Force, I continue to use my voice to ensure Lauderhill receives all the funds that we are eligible for from the County to battle COVID-19. Please be assured that we are working hard to ensure that our citi zens have access to all the resources and the most recent infor mation we can possibly provide. I commend all the City of Lauder hill essential workers, health care workers, and first responders for their sacrifice and commitment to the safety and protection of this community. We appreciate all you do!
As we look to the months ahead, my office has begun planning to resume some of our most popular programs for residents to participate in and enjoy. Pending the country’s progress with the pandemic, we are tentatively slated to relaunch our programs in June and July. Ever-popular programs such as the “Green Series” for our garden enthusiasts, “Grant Writing 101” for our entrepre neurs and community leaders, and the “Jazz in the Park” for our music lovers are all in the lineup. We are also happy to announce “Moving With the Mayor,” which is a new health and fitness initia tive that incorporates healthy eating education. For more infor mation on these programs and many more the City of Lauderhill has to offer, be sure to follow me on Facebook and Instagram at Ken Thurston Mayor of Lauderhill, or on the City’s website, www. lauderhill-fl.gov, and in the City e-newsletter.
This past year has revealed much about the issues we all face. I am impressed by the resilience, innovation and concern for com munity demonstrated by many of our residents and communi ty leaders. Let us all continue to do our part to thrive and forge ahead to keep Lauderhill a top destination to live, work and relax for many years to come!

VICE MAYOR DENISE D. GRANT
Dear Lauderhill Community,
Iam honored to serve as your Vice Mayor and to take an active role in setting the vision for our residents, businesses, and dedicated mu nicipal leaders and employees. Lauderhill, our All-America City, is a wonderful community of which I am proud to be a dedicated resident. As your Vice Mayor, I will continue to set the bar high and lead by ex ample. The cornerstone of our City will be transparent government that inspires community involvement.
As I engage with our diverse residents at community events, in local businesses, on virtual forums, and during Commission meetings and workshops, I hear your aspirations for Lauderhill. We want smart, ef ficient economic development that will transform the local business community. We want a peaceful, unified community that is safe for all residents. We want to provide resources to assist in all aspects of combating the COVID-19 pandemic, as it has affected each and every member of our community.
The success of local businesses during this trying time is paramount to the continuing economic development of our City. To promote the success of our retail shops and eateries, I have partnered with the Lau derhill Chamber of Commerce to champion the Safe & Clean initia tive for Lauderhill businesses. We are encouraging business owners to take the Safe and Clean Pledge at www.sunny.org/pledge, which in cludes a commitment to following CDC cleaning protocols, wearing masks, providing hand sanitizer, practicing social distancing, training staff on how to be safe and clean, and working toward contactless pay ment. Businesses that take the Safe and Clean Pledge are leading the way in reminding residents that it is safe, healthy and fun to support our local establishments by visiting in person.
Additionally, I have engaged – and will continue to engage – with a variety of resources and professionals to assist local businesses, churches and non-profit organizations in navigating the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP). The federal loan program provides support monies to businesses to help them stay open and continue to employ their staff members. I have led the charge to assist local businesses in connecting with lending institutions, and we were able to success fully engage with over 200 organizations during the first round of the program. As the second installment of PPP loans become available, we will strive to assist even more groups in obtaining this funding. I recently hosted two informative webinars, both of which are available for viewing at www.facebook.com/cityoflauderhill, that provide a trea sure trove of information to help you navigate the application process.
As your Vice Mayor, I am committed to the safety, comfort and wellbeing of our residents. My Unity in the Community initiative provides an opportunity for residents to engage with and get to know the Lau derhill Police Department and various City representatives. Each Uni ty in the Community walk focuses on 50-100 homes where residents of the area, police officers and City representatives go door to door to provide safety tips and hear about your neighborhood concerns. This
way we’re able to communicate one-on-one with citizens of Lauderhill so we can make strides to address the issues you share with us and an swer any questions that you have for us.
I am also a dedicated advocate for residents who are part of our vul nerable populations. This includes many of our seniors who are no longer able to go out on their own, as well as persons with high-risk health conditions which confine them to their homes. Throughout the pandemic, I partnered with various entities, including Joy’s Roti Delight and American Airlines, to ensure those who are in need receive regu lar food deliveries at their homes. This effort was in conjunction with drive-thru food distribution events offered for citizens in need who are still able to leave their homes.
Charting the course for Lauderhill while leveraging its existing strengths is an exciting endeavor. I want us to be fiscally smart and forward-thinking so that generations can continue to thrive in our City. I am confident and inspired to be a part of leading this great communi ty out of the pandemic and into the era of health, unity and economic growth that is sure to follow.

COMMISSIONER SARAI “RAY” MARTIN
It is my honor to represent the City of Lauderhill as your Com missioner. Residents of Lauderhill, thank you for electing me. Thank you for placing your faith in me. I may be new to politics, but the concept of service and servant leadership is a cornerstone of my foundation and identity.
I joined the Army at 17 years old. During my 22 years in the military, I served both here in the United States and internation ally in Germany, Bosnia, Hungary and Iraq. In 2015, I retired as a Major after my 22 years of service, and I thought to myself, “How else can I be of service to my community after retirement?” And I found my answer, right here as your Commissioner. Even as the CEO of Extreme Government Solutions, I’ve been fortunate to have found my most complementary work-community service balance. I am the President of Kiwanis Club of Central Broward. I’ve served as Chairman of the Lauderhill Community Budget and Advisory Board; was elected to be the Vice Chairman of the Board of Commissioners for the Lauderhill Housing Authority; volunteered to mentor with the Kids and the Power of Work or ganization (KAPOW), where I mentored a 4th grade class at Cas tle Hill Elementary; assisted veterans as a member of the Vet erans of Foreign Wars (VFW Post 8195); volunteered with Men of Action, a volunteer organization that cleans up our beautiful community; supported the Pride Center in Wilton Manors to in crease awareness and decrease AIDS; and more. I truly believe community service is the proverbial rent we pay to coexist with others in our society, and my goal is to use every opportunity to pay that “rent” in full.
The Commissioner role is only an extension of my duty to give back to the very community I grew up in. I recognize that I’ve entered this role during the pandemic, which has impacted not only Lauderhill, but every one of us in the world. My experience in the military instilled my commitment to serve others and pro tect the most vulnerable, especially during this challenging time. My dedication to being a servant leader has only deepened, and I know that I am not alone. I want to take a moment to recog nize and thank the everyday heroes in this community because not all heroes wear capes and not all heroes wear medals. Some heroes serve as health care workers, drive delivery trucks, and work at post offices and grocery stores. They teach us, feed us and disinfect our buildings. And because we have eco-therapy programs specifically for veterans and first responders who have experienced PTSD at Extreme Government Solutions, I under stand first hand how important it is to advocate for the mental and physical health of those who risk their lives to serve others. Frontline workers, I salute you. You are a beacon of light at this time. You inspire me every day to serve our community and play an active role in being a part of the solutions to the challenges we are facing today.
I’ve spent my first weeks in office reviewing feedback on cur rent issues that have deeply affected the community and learning about all the resources available to Lauderhill residents to solve them. I’ve listened to many of your concerns. Although this is not a complete list, some that will be a focus of during my term are:
• increasing safety and security in Lauderhill
• business development
• home ownership
• youth empowerment
• mental health programming and advocacy, especially during the pandemic.
Lauderhill residents, I hear you and your valid concerns: There’s a lot of work to be done in our community. Lauderhill, my sleeves are rolled up, and I’m ready to be of service. Please know that I’m always a phone call or message away. You can reach me at rmar tin@lauderhill-fl.gov or (954) 730-2976. My doors are always open.

COMMISSIONER MELISSA P. DUNN
Iwanted to take a minute to tell you a little bit about the initiatives I’ve started to support our community.
As a business owner, I know the challenges many of our busi nesses are facing, especially during the coronavirus outbreak. I, like so many others, have had to pivot my business plans this past year to meet the demand of a changing economy. That’s why I’ve created the Lauderhill Shines program, to invest in our small businesses, build their capacity and highlight their shining spirit.
Lauderhill Shines is a free eight-week, self-paced program for op erators to learn all things business. Think of it as an MBA in your pocket. Participants learn about business planning, access to cap ital, leadership, human resources, doing business with the City of Lauderhill and more. In addition to our value-packed content, participants receive access to me and other City decision makers during the live weekly Q&A and business coaching sessions. Since every participant is a business owner, everyone will also have the opportunity to expand their network.
In addition to the Lauderhill Shines program, the Lauderhill Health and Prosperity Partnership is an initiative close to my heart. My intention is to unite community stakeholders as we col laborate and transform our quality of life. From seniors to single parents, young professionals to business professionals, I want us to come together to address the social determinants of health to create a more resilient Lauderhill. That means our impact will not only be wide reaching but it also will create the meaningful change our community deserves. The program will touch on every facet of life within our City, including access to healthcare, eco nomic vitality, education, community life, public safety and the built environment.
I want to thank you for your belief in me and for electing me as your Commissioner. In my first one hundred days, I have worked tirelessly for you, our residents and business owners. Here are just a few of my accomplishments and current undertakings:
• We enrolled 25 local businesses and nonprofits in the first co hort of the Lauderhill Shines program, connecting businesses with resources to generate more revenue, retain more employ ees and contract with the City.
• I facilitated preservation of both Inverrary golf courses by pro posing and passing a resolution to reaffirm their covenant.
• I proposed and passed a resolution in support of House Bill 15. The measure proposed in the Florida legislature would require state sales tax be collected from all sales, whether online or on main street. This creates sales tax competitiveness and closes the loophole for good.
• To prevent transportation funding from being siphoned away from much-needed projects, I proposed and passed a resolution urging the immediate repeal of Senate Bill 7068, which passed in 2019 and created Multi-Use Corridors of Regional and Economic Significance (M-CORES). The funding for M-CORES is channeled through the Florida Department of Transportation’s five-year work program, which will concentrate spending in some com munities and delay projects in others across the state.
Lauderhill is the place I call home. It’s where I work and enjoy life to its fullest. I am proud to live in Lauderhill, and I am proud to rep resent you. I hope that you too are proud to call Lauderhill home! Together, we shine and will continue to shine.

COMMISSIONER LAWRENCE “JABBOW” MARTIN
As we welcome a new year filled with expectation and hope of better and brighter things in the City of Lauderhill, I would like to thank all of you for giving me this opportunity to serve the residents of this dynamic City. Your support during my cam paign and since being sworn in as a Commissioner is deeply appre ciated. You exercised your rights to vote at a time in our history as a nation where it is absolutely imperative to have a voice. Thank you.
The challenges we encountered since the start of this global CO VID-19 pandemic have certainly shaped us individually and collec tively into a more resilient, stronger community as we continue to find innovative ways to operate and serve.
The past year has been challenging for all of us; I pray there’s a light at the end of the tunnel with the introduction and current roll out of the COVID-19 Vaccines. There is a lot of speculation and fear, especially in our communities, about taking “The Shot.” At this point, I say we trust the science. As a COVID survivor, I’ve seen and experienced up close the effects and fear this virus produces. I had “The Shot.”
The City was awarded funding to allocate toward residents and businesses for eligible reasons related to COVID. For more informa tion on Lauderhill CARES programs, please go to our grants web page at lauderhill-fl.gov/lauderhillcaresprogram, call 954-714-2181, or email us at LauderhillCares@lauderhill-fl.gov
A clean community enhances our civic pride, and our recent clean-up of 51st Avenue has given that community a much-need ed facelift. It is my hope that we can continue to work together to make similar initiatives happen and that our residents and busi nesses will see the value in maintaining these areas in ways that add to the attractiveness of our community.
At the City Commission Meeting on Jan. 11, I announced the launch of another of my initiatives, Connect Lauderhill. Residents and businesses are encouraged to get in the know and learn all the ways you can get connected with the City. You can sign up for “E-News,” which allows the City to send you news releases about topics such as Lauderhill CARES and COVID-19 updates. Another sign-up connection is our bi-weekly e-newsletter, “Living Lauder hill,” which summarizes two weeks of Lauderhill’s social media, in cludes resources for businesses and residents, and highlights the accomplishments of our police and fire Departments. The last signup option is our “Code Red” Alerts. These messages go straight to your phone as either a text or voicemail message. The information sent typically includes emergency messages, timely messages and general notifications.
Also, look out for my Celebrating Magnificent Milestones initia tive. I feel it is important to honor and celebrate persons living in Lauderhill who are turning 80 years and above, or celebrating a wedding anniversary of 25 years or more. And so, you will be able
to log on to www.lauderhill-fl.gov/celebrate to register yourself or a neighbor, friend or relative who will be celebrating such milestones.
I would encourage everyone to keep checking our website and social media pages for news about other happenings in destination Lauderhill. And don’t forget: we certainly will be bringing back our Jammin’ in the Park events when it is safe to do so. We look forward to entertaining you all and giving local businesses the opportunity to showcase their products.
My desire to become a City Commissioner was inspired by my willingness to serve my community. My family has always given back to others and prided ourselves on serving. As the late John Lewis instructed, “If you see something, do something.” I want to help the City of Lauderhill grow, get connected, embrace our cul tural differences, and make the quality of life better for all of our citizens. I am at work and will be asking my fellow residents to as sist this Commission in making our city a more vibrant destination. Together, let’s make Lauderhill a great place to live, do business and work.

CITY MANAGER DESORAE GILES-SMITH
Dear Residents, Business Owners and Guests of the City of Lauderhill,
The job of the City Manager is to oversee the operations of the City of Lauderhill under the leadership and direction of the Mayor and City Commissioners. For a little over a year now, I have had the privilege of serving first as your acting City Manager and now as your permanent City Manager.
There are many aspects of this position that are truly rewarding. First, I love this community, and I have been serving it for more than 25 years. Second, the staff here are truly committed to our residents and are very talented. Collectively, our goal is to make Lauderhill better everyday. Third, we appreciate every resident that makes Lauderhill their home. Our residents are the best in Broward. Serv ing them is an honor and a privilege. I am truly humbled to be part of such an amazing community and such a fantastic team.
Over the last year, we have witnessed unique and unprecedented challenges worldwide: from COVID-19 to civil unrest, and, in some communities, extreme weather events. With the situation everchanging and the future uncertain, what I can tell you is that Lau derhill is resilient. Lauderhill is strong, and we are proud.
At the direction of the Commission, we have been serving our residents with testing and vaccination sites. We have been offering programs on wellness and even prosperity as it pertains to surviv ing these tough times. Food drives and massive mask and PPE give aways were organized. We’ve supported businesses and start-ups with seminars on how to access assistance such as the Paycheck Protection Program. We continue to provide our residents with quality services while keeping them and our staff safe.
Amid so much uncertainty, area companies have pivoted, adapt ing their goods and services to these times. This edition of Desti nation Lauderhill introduces you to some of our enterprising local treasures, as it is imperative that we, as a community, support our City’s small businesses. Lauderhill’s mix of places to live, shop, dine and play is unique. Although often imitated, there is no place like our home – our Lauderhill.

COVID-19
Protocols
YOU SHOULD KNOW
Although COVID-19 vaccinations are being rolled out, we cannot yet let down our guard. The pandemic has greatly affected the way we live and still poses an unprecedented challenge to public health because of how easily the virus is transmitted.
More than ever before, it is im portant for us to maintain good hygiene and adhere strictly to safety protocols in and out of our homes to protect our selves, our loved ones, and, by extension, our community. These protocols include keeping rooms well ventilated, avoiding crowds, keeping our hands clean, avoiding touching our faces, coughing into a tissue or bent elbow, and social distancing.
We all have a fair idea of the key proto cols by now. Even so, this guide provides detailed guidelines to tighten up your safety precautions until our community is fully vaccinated and no new strains of the virus are of concern.
CORONAVIRUS SYMPTOMS
People infected with COVID-19 may or may not show visible symptoms. Those that do, manifest their symptoms typically within five or six, but up to 14, days of infection. Here are some of the most com mon that carriers might experience.
MOST COMMON SYMPTOMS:
l Fever
l Dry cough
l Tiredness
LESS COMMON SYMPTOMS:
l Aches and pains
l Sore throat
l Diarrhoea
l Conjunctivitis (pink eye)
l Headache
l Loss of taste or smell
l A rash on skin, or discolouration of fingers or toes
SERIOUS SYMPTOMS:
l Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
l Chest pain or pressure
l Loss of speech or movement
On average it takes 5–6 days from when someone is infected with the virus for symptoms to show, however it can take up to 14 days.
WHO IS AT INCREASED RISK?
Apart from older adults and people with underlying health conditions, some other people who need to take extra care include those who:
l are from ethnic and racial minority groups.
l are pregnant or breastfeeding.
l have disabilities.
l have substance abuse disorders.
l have behavioral and developmental disorders.
l live in rural areas.
l are homeless.
l are in detention and correctional centers.
l are members of refugee communities.
l live or work in nursing homes, long-term care facilities or group homes.
WHAT TO DO IF YOU’RE SICK
If you think you might have been exposed and notice symptoms of COVID-19, such as fever or cough, contact your health care provider immediately. If you do not have a regular doctor, call the public health department or local community health center for guidance. If you have emergency warning signs — like shortness of breath, constant pressure or pain in the chest, or a bluish tone to the face , nails, gums and area around the eyes — call for emergency medical attention. Meanwhile, follow these steps to take care of yourself and protect those around you.
l Don’t leave your home except to get medical care. Most people experience mild illness and can recover at home.
l Rest and stay hydrated while taking over-thecounter medicines like acetaminophen to relieve you.
l Keep in contact with your doctor. If you have to visit the doctor, ensure to call ahead so that personnel can prepare to receive you.
l Stay away from ridesharing or public transportation.
l Monitor the symptoms and follow the guidance of your healthcare provider or health authorities on checking and reporting symptoms.
l Wear a mask over your nose and mouth if you must be around people or pets from outside your household, and try to stay at least six feet away.
l Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, and dispose of the tissue in a lined trash can. Wash your hands immediately with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Otherwise, clean them with a 60% alcoholbased hand sanitizer.
l Don’t share personal items such as eating utensils, bedding or towels with members of your household.
l Clean and disinfect hightouch surfaces daily.
l If you use a pulse oximeter to check your oxygen levels, be aware that most devices do not read as accurately with darker skin tones, sometimes providing read outs that are a few points higher than the true numbers. Taking note of your typical levels at different times of day when healthy will help you know if you’ve experienced a significant decline when ill.
INFECTION AMONG FAMILY
HOW TO PROTECT EACH OTHER WITHIN HOUSEHOLDS
Protecting your family will take proper planning and good decision-making. You must stay up-to-date with information from public health officials on COVID-19 activity in your area.
l Make a list of local organizations that you and your household can contact for information, healthcare services, resources and support. Also, create an emergency contact list of healthcare providers, loved ones, neighbors, drivers, employers, teachers and other community resources. Tell everyone in the household where the list is stored.
l Prepare for possible illness by choosing a room that you can use to separate ill members of the household.
l Take extra precautions for those at higher risk of severe illness, especially the elderly, those with serious underlying medical conditions and the unvaccinated. That can include common chronic conditions like diabetes, heart disease and obesity.
l Protect yourselves and your pets by adhering to prescribed everyday safety protocols.
l Report any suspected case to public health officials immediately, and take
Very importantly, attend to the overall mental and emotional health of loved ones in these challenging times. The National Sui cide Prevention Hotline can recommend you to local services: 800273-8255. Many employers also offer third-party assistance pro grams that include a limited number of free counseling sessions
the necessary precautions to avoid infecting others.
l Remember that COVID-19 can spread even if the carrier doesn’t show symptoms. For added precaution, unvaccinated members of the household who regularly interact with people outside the home for work or other situations should wear a mask in the house when interacting closely with family or if they’re in the same room for more than 15 minutes.
every year, as well as assistance with financial emergencies, griev ing and other difficult circumstances. Ask your HR official for infor mation. Community health centers, which are located in every U.S. county, provide physical and mental health care for people who are uninsured or underinsured.

IMPORTANT
Vaccine Information
The COVID-19 pandemic continues to keep everyday life on hold, but vaccines offer new hope for a return to relative normalcy.
It is important to stay up to date on public health orders as well as the availability of testing and vac cines. Continued adherence to health and safety protocols protects yourself and others, even af ter getting vaccinated. Experts encourage people to regularly wash their hands, cover their mouth when sneezing or coughing, wear a mask, maintain a sixfoot distance from others, and limit social contact be yond their household. Here are some things to keep in mind as we learn more about the COVID-19 vaccine and as it becomes more readily available.
KNOW YOUR OPTIONS
COVID-19 vaccines from three companies — Moderna, Pfizer-BioNTech and Johnson & Johnson — have been authorized for emergency use by the FDA. Both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are administered as two doses, 21-28 days apart, and have been shown to be more than 90% effective at preventing serious cases of COVID-19. The Johnson & Johnson vaccine re quires one shot, although scientists are studying whether two shots would be more effective. All three vaccines are highly effective against illness and death. Research has not yet concluded whether vaccinated people never become infected or if they do but just never develop symptoms, so it re mains unknown if a vaccinated person can still spread the virus.
WHO CAN BE VACCINATED
Although the requirements are changing rapidly, COVID-19 vaccines have already been made available to people 12 and older in Florida, as prescribed by the Food and Drug Administration. Individuals under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO
On the day of your appointment, bring your ID and wear a mask that fully cov ers your mouth and nose. Many locations also require a consent form, so if you were asked to fill one out when registering, do not forget to bring this.
At your appointment, you will receive a COVID-19 vaccine card that states the spe cific vaccine you received (Moderna, Pfizer, or Johnson & Johnson), the date received and the location at which you received it. Remember, most vaccines require two dos es, so don’t lose that vaccine card. It will state when you should schedule your second dose. According to the CDC, if you received the Pfizer vaccine, a second dose is ideal
you received the Moderna vaccine, a second shot comes one month after the first.
Some common side effects from the shots are fever, chills, tiredness, head ache, and some pain and swelling on the arm where your vaccine was administered. These are normal and safe signs that your body’s immune system has reacted to the vaccine, developing antibodies that will pro tect you in the future. There have been no serious, long-term side effects document ed among the tens of millions of Ameri cans who have been vaccinated so far, but authorities continue to closely monitor the situation.
For more peace of mind, download V-safe, a smartphone tool designed by the CDC. This health checker is available for registration af ter you get your first vaccine and will keep you updated on normal side effects, offer textmessage check ins, and reminders for your second dose. Learn more at vsafe.cdc.gov.
Remember that getting the vaccine is a necessary step to protect yourself and oth ers. Healthcare providers are doing every thing they can to make sure that as many people are safely vaccinated as soon as pos sible. Until we are all vaccinated, make sure to wear your mask, wash your hands, and follow other health orders designed to pro tect yourself and your community.
For more information, visit floridahealthcovid19.gov/vaccines, call 866-779-6121 or email COVID-19@FLHealth.gov.
WHERE TO GET VACCINATED LOCALLY
Use the CDC’s VaccineFinder tool at vac cinefinder.org/search to find the most up-to-date information about vaccine availability and the nearest provider. Choose the vaccine you are searching for and enter your zip code, then the tool will list all of the providers in your area, plus who has the vaccine readily in stock. If in stock, the site allows you to check availability and schedule appoint ments.
MYVACCINEFL.GOV AND OTHER COVID-19 VACCINE RESOURCES
Pre-register for the COVID-19 vaccine at myvaccine.fl.gov.
This site allows you to select your county and “get in line,” automatically taking you to a pre-registration page that will notify you by email or phone when new appointments are available in your area.
It can be especially hard for seniors and other Floridians who lack internet access or skills to find important information about vaccination. If you are struggling to find vaccine assistance, you can text FL COVID19 to 888777 to receive text alerts about important updates or call the 24/7 COVID-19 Call Center at 866-779- 6121.
Businesses Have Leeway
When elephants fight, as the old African adage goes, it’s the grass that suffers. Businesses and their patrons in the city of Lauderhill and oth er parts of the state can probably relate when it comes to government mandates regarding masks and so cial distancing. Counties and local municipalities have estab lished clear safety rules to curb the spread of the coronavirus, and now the federal Centers for Disease Control and Preven tion believe fully vaccinated people can largely take off their masks. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has gone further. He re cently issued an executive order suspending all local COVID-19 restrictions and mandates. The result? A confusing moment as businesses are left to decide the best course of action as soci ety returns to normalcy in a post-pandemic world. The new pe riod of seemingly conflicting rules still leaves businesses with enough wiggle room to take the pulse of their customers when it comes to their own COVID-19 policies. Many businesses in South Florida are keeping their mask policies, in hopes that a little common sense and patience will keep everyone safe dur ing this time of transition.

KILLA KUTZ BARBER SHOP
Barbershops are cultural staples within a community, and Dwayne Bennett un derstands that. For more than 13 years, customers have come to Killa Kutz Bar ber Shop in Lauderhill from as far as Or lando and Palm Beach for “killa” hair cuts and braids. Their experienced barbers are celebrated for their precision line ups. Al though most customers are young, Ben nett said everyone is welcome. “We deal with everybody good,” Bennett said.
Because he is service oriented, Bennett has adjusted operations to guard custom ers’ safety. Instead of waiting inside, clients now can sit on spaced-out chairs outside. On the door, a big sign reads, “Masks need ed.” Bennett also has ensured worksta tions are at least six feet apart, equipped with hand sanitizers and wipes, seats are wiped down and aprons are washed after every use. Bennett who also keeps a posi tive outlook said, “We are open and hope that everything goes back to normal. We just got to be strong.”

PAZAZZ HAIR STUDIO
Owner Keddis Kerr-Campbell has over 20 years of experience as a stylist, colorist and hair consultant. She opened Pazazz Hair Studio in 2004 not only to style hair but also to help clients maintain healthy locks. Campbell’s clientele includes mostly Black women in their mid-thirties, who cherish her expertise.
After the start of the pandemic, Camp bell lost almost half her clientele and a few employees. To remain compliant with health protocols and protect customers, she required temperature checks and prop er and frequent sanitization. “We were wip ing down every 10-15 minutes. Wiping down the doors, the chairs, every time a client got up out of a chair, we were wiping down,” Campbell said. Additionally, she restricted the number of people in the salon at any given time. Previously, Pazzaz had accepted both appointments and walk-ins, but now they accept appointments only. Campbell is “hanging in there” and continues to re main positive and hopeful.

CORE HEALTH CHIROPRACTIC
AND WELLNESS
If you’ve been feeling tension in your body due to an accident, or just want to check on your physical wellbeing, Dr. Christopher Maylor, of Core Health Chiropractic and Wellness, has a remedy for you. “We focus on customer service and meeting our pa tients where they are. You come in, and we can help you rehab and get back to well ness,” said Maylor. Who qualifies to see a chiropractor? “Anyone that has pain. ... Any one with a spine,” Maylor said. “You want to make sure that your alignment is intact, so you’re functioning correctly.”
Since the start of the pandemic, the Lau derhill wellness center saw a decrease in the number of people booking an appoint ment, dropping from 30 patients per day to less than a handful. During the countymandated shutdown, Maylor expanded the waiting room to accommodate social dis tancing and, in addition to sanitizing sur faces throughout the day, the center also purchased an electrostatic sprayer to rid surfaces of any trace of the virus.
As business begins to pick up again, “We’re grateful for the people who are com ing in and supporting us at this time,” May lor said. “We can’t wait to get back into the community to do events.” corehealthspine.com 4300 N. University Drive, Suite B-104 954-636-8414
MARINO FAMILY DENTAL
Dr. Anelisse Marino is a practicing dentist with seven years of experience. She has owned and operated her own practice, Ma rino Family Dental, for over three years, providing general dentistry services backed by exceptional patient care. They offer cos metic and family dentistry, dental implants, restorative treatments, and preventative care. “There is a level of comfort, and we make you a part of the family. You are not just a dollar sign walking through our door,” Office Manager Caroline Rebelto said.
The practice offers their clients conve nient scheduling, allowing visits until 7 p.m. and family block scheduling so everyone can be seen back-to-back.
After the start of the pandemic, they were mandated to close their doors for two months. “Since then, we’ve had to add ad ditional protocols to make sure the office is clean and sterile for our patients,” Rebelto said. And, to help offset the negative finan cial impact the pandemic had on their cli ents, Marino Family Dental has offered ad ditional discounts.

$99 CLINIC
The $99 Clinic offers health care for an af fordable flat rate of $99 per visit. “It’s conve nient. It’s a one-stop shop, and it’s providing a much-needed service, especially in times like these when people are unemployed, they might be uninsured or underinsured,” Nurse Practitioner Gina Daye said. They usually offer in-person or telemedicine appointments as well as walk-up services, but have switched primarily to telemedi cine during the pandemic to protect pa tients and staff. Prescriptions can be filled in-house or sent electronically to a pa tient’s pharmacy of choice. Daye noted the clinic offers same-day, next-day and week end appointments, including for televisits. Paperwork is handled via email in advance so appointments are quick and on time. An online portal allows patients access to ap pointment dates and records as well as the ability to message their physician.
“It’s for every single person,” Daye said of the $99 Clinic.“It’s affordable. It’s conve nient. The service is unmatched.”

TAILORED FITNESS
Tailored Fitness focuses on providing ex ceptional service attuned to their clients. “One of our core values is service,” said CEO Kamal Cudjoe. “And when it comes to train ing, attention to detail is paramount.” The custom-fitness business, launched in 2012, specializes in group and personal train ing geared toward weight loss, body ton ing and nutritional accountability. Offering sessions from Monday to Saturday, they are beginner friendly. Their enthusiastic and motivational trainers attract members, as does the inclusion of inspiring music from hip hop and soca to reggae and R&B.
At the mercy of the pandemic, Cudjoe said the business “did have to close.” But they’ve stayed afloat by creating new ways for members to participate in their servic es without breaking safety protocols. One solution: Tailored Fitness launched their online training platform and training app. Each client receives a customized program with a six-week weight loss regimen, men tored workouts, meal plans, an initial fit ness assessment, and 24/7 trainer access.

GRACE FUNERAL CHAPELS
Over the years, many families have bene fitted from the professionalism and insight of the multicultural staff of Grace Funeral Chapels, which started back in 1991 and opened the South Florida location in 2004. The staff works with those who have lost loved ones and with individuals to pre-plan the perfect send off. Their services and cer emonies cater to a variety of different reli gions and cultural practices. “Our main goal is to honor your loved one in the best way that we can,” Funeral Director Shanté Hud son said. “We’ve already been doing this for so many years that we may already have things in place, depending on what you’re looking for.” In fact, sending the remains of loved ones cross country or internationally, facilitating diverse cultural rites, preparing a veteran’s funeral with full military honors and grief counseling are only a few of the other specialties this funeral home offers. Of course, all services meet CDC guidelines and protocols. More recently, Grace Funer al Chapels added online video streaming of services to help people bid their final fare wells no matter where they are.

AMERIK TRANS
Amerik Trans is a non-emergency medical transport that offers wheelchair, Medicare and Medicaid transportation services sev en days a week. The expert crew handles all the planning required for a patient’s trans portation, whether for dialysis, hospital visits, rehab stays, school, weekend trips, long-distance travels or pharmacy pickups. Amerik Trans staff have all undergone physiology certification and have more than 25 years combined experience in the industry. “We actually implement every thing that we have learned working for oth er companies,” Vice President Alain Augus tin said. “That’s the reason why we created [Amerik Trans], just to make things better and provide what the other companies don’t have.” All equipment is ADA compli ant; within their vehicles, they have hydrau lic lifts to accommodate wheelchair users, chair-securing devices, and additional rear seating for nurses or family members. Cli ents can easily book online or call directly. Since most of their clientele are at high risk if they contract the Coronavirus, Amerik’s business has decreased. However, that has not affected their level of customer service. They ensure the recommended CDC proto cols are in place, especially where sanitiza tion is concerned.
Augustin hopes to expand his clientele, purchase more equipment, and create more jobs for the community.

TRADELINK NETWORK
USA
Operating at their Lauderhill location for five years, Tradelink Network USA provides durable medical equipment and nutritional products “geared towards people who have inborn errors of metabolism, like phenylke tonuria (PKU) or glycogen storage disease,” General Manager Cleveland Swaby said it is important to find products to help man age these conditions, along with HIV in continence and other disorders. “We have formulas for people with HIV [but] these formulas are not cures,” he said. “They are just to prolong life.”
Tradelink thrives on business referrals, but since the start of the pandemic — along with many of their partner business es that temporarily closed, such as doc tor’s offices or clinics — they have slowed down. Unfortunately, many Tradelink cli ents are unable to seek direct face-to-face care, so they work to extend long-standing necessary prescriptions where possible. Swaby said his top concern is the clients, even more so than the business. “Most of the patients’ cases are considered under lying (conditions that elevate their risk of a severe COVID-19 case), so they are still very cautious as to how they go out and go about,” Swaby said.

LOVE AND PEACE WELLNESS*
Love and Peace Wellness is a Black-owned holistic treatment center led by Amari Garnes and Spencer Lott. Garnes and Lott, better known as Love and Peace, sought out non-western alternative remedies for their own past ailments. Their success es healing with holistic practices inspired them to become certified and eventually open Love and Peace Wellness. “We are a holistic wellness center which focuses on mental and physical problems,” said Gar nes. Their treatment methods vary, rang ing from life coaching and sound therapy to body steams, infrared light, herbal rem edies, and vibration therapy.
Garnes is a certified holistic fertility dou la and herbalist, and Lott is a sound practi tioner and herbalist.
Their wellness center also focuses on men’s and women’s reproductive health. One such offering is “Womb Care Cycling,” which helps women overcome bacterial vaginosis, yeast infections, fibroids and cysts, and pregnancy issues.
Like all businesses, they suffered during the pandemic. Because they could not see clients in person, they started to sell herb al remedy packages online. Their self-care line ranges from bath cleansers to natural soaps and hair butter. You can also shop for crystals, jewelry, female reproductive care (yoni care) products, incense, energy cleansing (smudging) tools, and other prod ucts through their online store.

ARBOR ELECTRICAL SERVICE
This broad-reaching service is better known locally as Mr. Wireman Electric, providing contract work for both business and construction ventures as well as any homeowner looking to ensure the safety of their home. The mark of professional ism is what sets the company on another level. They complete deep background checks on their certified electricians and provide clients detailed breakdowns of all costs linked to the project before any of the work gets started. President Margaret An glin said that kind of integrity “helps gen eral contractors bring in their jobs on time and on budget.” For residential customers, she offers a promise: “If we come out and take care of a job for you, and, say, within six months the same problem occurs with the same area, then we will repair that for free.”
This attention to detail and high level of customer service extended to the pro tocols every business has had to contend with in recent times. For everyone’s peace of mind, all employees are tested and med ically cleared to enter customers’ homes, wearing full protective equipment.

EVE’S HOME CARE
Quality care is about ensuring the correct person is matched with an individual’s spe cific home health support needs, and this is the entire premise behind Eve’s Home Care Inc.
Mauve Walker, part owner, said finding a good caregiver-client fit is a top priority. “We don’t just find anyone,” she said. The goal is to create greater “skill to illness”’ compatibility by providing specialized training for caregivers with patients need ing targeted home nursing. Walker said the strategy has worked, for example, cli ents with heart problems have a low re-ad mittance rate. The needs of seniors, those with major illnesses and people with de velopmental disabilities remain constant, particularly in uncertain times. Walker said the business has focused on consistent ser vice and quality care at a time when many hesitate to have others in their homes or are reluctant to enter the homes of others. While day-to-day operations have been ad justed, the wellbeing of the patient remains the top priority, as has ensuring the health and interests of those who are employed by the service.

GENERATIONAL WEALTH*
Vee Escarment is the President and CEO of Generational Wealth Through Homeown ership Inc. After working in the industry for seven years, she founded the nonprofit organization in 2019 to offer housing coun seling services to low- to moderate-income families in South Florida. “We assist clients with credit counseling, budgeting, saving, pre-purchase and post-purchase counsel ing, home maintenance, and home afford ability counseling,” Escarment said. “Our goal is basically to increase the minority homeownership rate so that they can build generational wealth and they can leave a legacy for their families.”
The organization also offers workshops and e-books covering financial basics and insights into homeownership. Before CO VID-19, seminars and classes were in-per son, often at libraries. Now, all events are online, allowing people from across Florida to join — not just those in the Miami-Dade and Broward counties. Clients can visit the Generational Wealth website to register.
Escarment said the nonprofit is still re covering from the pandemic’s effects but is positive and expresses the desire for con tinued growth. “Here in the South Florida market, we are going to continue to im pact and empower communities,” she said. “We’re going to still offer classes [and] I’m still going to work with people to get them to homeownership.”

The hospital offers care that goes beyond its doors, delivering food supplies, prescrip tions and even shampoo. In addition, their handy app gives you direct remote access to your pet’s medical records, and they of fer care packages that give a bulk rate for a year’s wellness needs broken into manage able monthly payments. Their goal is to fur ther this sense of community by partnering with nearby apartment and business com plexes for pet care, as well as working with the Humane Society. Lauderhill CRA
TRANSFORMING THE CITY FOR THE BETTER
The winds of change are blow ing through Lauderhill. The bustling State Road 7 (SR7) corridor is undergoing a ma jor facelift under the guidance of the City and the Lauderhill Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA). The effort comprises two districts — the Central CRA and the State Road 7 CRA. Even in the midst of the pandemic, the City and agency are facilitating positive transformation with the goal of show casing the diversity, style and function of the area. Initiatives such as the Com mercial Facade Grant Program and the Arts and Entertainment District are breathing new life into the City’s cul tural, dining and shopping hub with the hopes of instilling a renewed sense of civic pride and strengthening local businesses.
STATE ROAD 7 CRA PROJECTS ON 38TH AVENUE
While COVID-19 has delayed events planned for the City’s emerging downtown arts and entertainment district, the physi cal preparation of the area is well under way. Among the improvements is a revital ization of the warehouse corridor of N.W. 38th Avenue.
The City will spend nearly $ 5 million to improve 38th Avenue between 16th and 19th streets, just off SR7— the City’s main north-south thoroughfare. Once realized, it will become home to a number of dinein restaurants, fashion boutiques, comedy clubs and more. Exciting events hosted there will include a Business Expo, the Col or Me Healthy 5K Run, and Jazz Under the Stars.
The complementary 38th Avenue Exten sion project will unify the arts and enter tainment district, creating a fully immer sive experience. The updates will connect the SR7 corridor to the Lauderhill Perform ing Arts Center and Central Broward Re gional Park, home of the only International Cricket Council stadium in North America. This design is intended to promote connec tivity. Patrons who see a theatre produc tion might venture out to explore the many shops and businesses located in the newly developed area.
Private projects taking advantage of the city’s redevelopment include the addition of luxury living on 38th Avenue. At LePARC, 320 apartment units will be outfitted with a full array of lavish amenities and feature architectural design that complements the district’s new, modern aesthetic.
“Our goal is to create a fully immersive entertainment experience for all of those who visit the district. We want it to be not only aesthetically pleasing but to create a sense of place that reflects the diversity of cultures in Lauderhill and demonstrates how we came to be an All-America City,” said CRA Director Sean Henderson, who also serves as the organization’s Deputy Fi nance Director.
These projects are still in the planning phases with the completion dates to be de termined in the near future. That means opportunities for businesses interested in working on projects or selling services or goods to the City. Visit colvendor.com to re ceive alerts and updates on all City projects out for bid.
COMMERCIAL FACADE GRANT PROGRAM
This program offers businesses and com mercial properties along the SR7 stretch the resources to improve building exteri ors as well as correct building code viola tions. The façade grant program is designed to enhance the appearance of the corridor especially in the vicinity of the Lauderhill Performing Arts Center.
To qualify for the grant, the improve ments must be made on the section of the building that is visible from the main thoroughfare. Commercial façades or code compliance projects that are not part of a building structure are not eligible. LAUDERHILL CENTRAL CRA’S NEIGHBORHOOD IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM
A great benefit of Lauderhill living is that the City has an abundance of affordable housing, particularly in the central CRA area. Prices remain modest despite the area’s desirability. The CRA formed the Neighborhood Improvement Program to create character and instill a sense of pride for community residents. Programs
aim to improve the quality of living for residents through homeownership, neigh borhood beautification and educational events.
In December, the CRA celebrated break ing ground on the Renaissance Point infill housing project, which will include new single-family homes and townhomes. These modern, energy-efficient threeand four-bedroom, two-bath units feature open floor plans, two-car garages and en ergy-saving appliances. The homes will be located along 56th Avenue, 27th court and 28th Street with convenient access to all major transportation routes, and a variety of recreational, restaurant and shopping options. Prices will range from the low to mid $300,000s. Renaissance Point is just one component of the Lauderhill CRA’s ef forts to promote homeownership to both existing and future residents of the everblossoming City.
Progress is being made on the Central CRA’s neighborhood beautification initia tives. In November, the agency hired its first employees tasked with maintaining safe, clean and sustainable neighborhoods. Also, its landscape technicians are respon sible for removing litter and debris in public spaces while maintaining the landscaping of the medians on the 55th and 56th Ave nue corridors.

BUSINESS TO BUSINESS SUPPLIES AND SERVICES
Since 1989, Business to Business Sup plies and Services has offered competi tively priced janitorial cleaning and sup plies to small and large organizations from a variety of industries in the South Florida area. They also provide residential and car pet cleaning services. “We do commercial cleaning, and we also deliver products to businesses. Everything janitorial,” CEO Wal dith Thompson said. “Unlike the major sup ply houses [where] you have to put your or der in within a specific time, I can be called upon just about any time when they are not available.”
Because most of his clients are restau rants and doctors’ offices that have seen re duced traffic, Thompson said his company has stayed viable by expanding their servic es and lowering prices. For instance, he in vested in equipment that disinfects using a high-concentration solution and ultraviolet light. Thompson is proud that his company offers such a long list of cleaning services and supplies, which makes his crews able to nimbly respond to clients. “It’s just a con venience,” he said.

HER POWER SPACE*
Her Power Space is a women-forward, menwelcoming boutique co-working space, event venue, and podcast studio provid ing clients with marketing consulting and other business services. They attract a lot of solopreneurs, “who work from home or are side hustlers, meaning they have a ‘day time job and a daydream job,’”said Founder and Chief Curator Michelle Talbert. “We fo cus on folks who don’t have their own brickand-mortar business and really need those resources.”
Due to the pandemic, Her Power Space closed its doors in late March, but trans ferred some of their services online, offer ing virtual workshops, business coaching, and mail services. Consultations also are available online or in-person. Now that they are open, to ensure the safety of their clients, Her Power Space enacted social distancing practices, daily temperature checks and thorough cleaning protocols. With their virtual mailing services, clients can choose to have the contents of their mail be scanned and sent to them instead of physically coming in to the office. As an other precautionary measure, clients can take advantage of the outside courtyard seating where Wi-Fi is still available.
So people can pay only for what they need, Her Power Space does not require a monthly membership fee and offers servic es on an á la carte basis.

For 17 years, she also has been recognized by the Florida Supreme Court as a certified mediator and arbitrator, pro viding those services to both small compa nies and individuals. Her clientele consists mainly of people originally from the Carib bean.
Although Mediation & Immigration Doc ument Services was officially registered as a business in 2010, Gumbs has more than 20 years of experience. Previously, she worked for one of the biggest law firms in downtown Fort Lauderdale.
The pandemic drastically impacted her business but she said ongoing cases and long term clients have kept her busy. “I have a good rapport with my clients [be cause of] my honesty, my loyalty to them,” she said. The business has not yet picked up to the level it was before the pandemic, but Gumbs remains hopeful as she looks forward to expanding, onboarding and training experienced young attorneys.

Birthed from the personal experiences of founder Catherine Malcolm and inspired by her powerhouse entrepre neurial spirit, the foundation gives individu als and the community tools they need for an education and aims to “promote mind fulness and to find their greater selves in side.” Programs focus heavily on restaurant and hospitality training and include literal growth practices. Community gardens be come areas for hands-on experience, pro vide collaborative ownership opportuni ties and feed into the Portabella Red profit arm of the program, which focuses on the same areas as the training: restaurants and the hospitality industries. Some partici pants go on to own and operate franchises. At a time when remote learning and work ing have become the norm, the hands-on approach has not been diluted in the pro gram’s online form.

DREAM CREATIVE STUDIOS

Photographs have long marked major mile stones in our lives. Kadyrah Payne picked up a camera in 2017, and what was once a hobby has now become a full-fledged lux ury portrait studio business. She feels it goes beyond just snapping an artistic por trait. “It’s not just pictures to them,” Payne said of her clients. “It’s something they can pass down from generation to generation.” Similar to any other beloved heirloom, her portraits are captured moments in time that are also personalized art. Payne notes that she offers a full-service experi ence for a reasonable price. This includes online bookings and heading out on loca tion to capture these precious memories. Her specialty is newborns, from simple in timate moments to complete artistic cre ations. She also documents beautiful baby bumps, families, sweet sixteens, head shots, weddings, valentine’s and anniversa ry photographic keepsakes, and even offers a package to capture someone’s sexy side. Payne starts with a consultation to under stand your vision. Shoots feature personal touches like a nursing area, tea, coffee and even champagne. At the end, she meets with clients for a final viewing session.

Their services include products for “oneoff” events such as parties and occasions requiring tickets, banners, flags and even customized masks. Their bespoke services are also “great for building a brand,” said Chief Operating Officer Brittany Madison. “We want to be as broad as possible, to try and meet any possible need.” That includes initial concept design to production of pro motional materials, like business cards, brochures, flyers, hang tags for sale items, magnets, stickers and more. Despite their multi-layered services, no job is too small. Simpler needs can also be met, such as sig nage for a real estate agent’s open house or the outside of a local grocery.

POSTNET LAUDERHILL
PostNet is a one-stop printing and shipping center. They offer every door direct mail (EDDM), mailbox rentals — either physi cal or virtual, laminating and scanning ser vices, custom graphic design services, and high-quality printing services for yard signs, business cards, banners, blueprints, pre sentation materials and more. “We work with the four main carriers like FedEx, UPS, DHL, and the post office. Other businesses who do the same thing can do one or two, but we can do all four,” said Apolonio Cede no, who has owned and operated the Lau derhill branch for five years.
Since the start of the pandemic, Post Net’s printing services saw a drop in reve nue. Their usual clients — local business es in the surrounding area — closed their doors, and individuals stopped visiting in person. Cedeno shifted the focus of their marketing plan, increasing advertising and pivoting to target doctor’s offices, laborato ries, small hospitals and clinics, daycares, and restaurants. As a result, PostNet saw an uptick in their shipping services. Cede no believes customers would rather avoid the long lines and large crowds by coming to PostNet, where social distancing is en forced.
As part of their push to remain competi tive, PostNet offers specials including a 15% discount to frontline workers, police officers, and firefighters on all shipping and printing services.

DENNIS SHIPPING INTERNATIONAL
Dennis Shipping International is a long standing shipping and logistics compa ny. With their headquarters based in New York, they expanded and opened their third location in Florida over 10 years ago. Den nis Shipping offers ocean freight, door-todoor, pre-clearance, automobile, and con tainer shipping services from the United States to various Caribbean Islands. While customers praise them for quality and reli ability, their commitment to service is what sets them apart. “We’ve been at this for 35 years. We have a loyal customer base,” said Florida Manager Keith Duhaney. “We’ve been servicing [our customers] and bring ing in new business over the years because of service.”
At the start of the pandemic, they were thrown into uncharted waters, but busi ness has surged the last six months. “Peo ple cannot travel, so [they are] sending more items back home; stocking up so to speak,” explained Duhaney. With the up tick in demand, Dennis Shipping hired more staff and expanded work hours. “So we open seven days a week now,” Duhaney said. “I just make sure that we answer the phones because people are calling.”

NAILED IT DIY STUDIO*
Nailed It DIY Studio is a unique do-it-your self workshop where experienced instruc tors teach clients to transform basic ma terials into one-of-a-kind wood signs and home decor. “Our motto is, ‘We teach and you create.’ You come in and you pick out your stencil, you pick out your wood platform and from there we’ll guide you through each step,” Owner Yvonne Pubi en said. Based on local health guidance, to protect customers during the pandemic, the studio limited the size of workshops. “If they didn’t feel safe, you didn’t get custom ers. So we had to figure out a different way to reach the people,” Pubien said. The stu dio also created a product called ‘Take and Make” for locals who want to enjoy the instudio experience from the comfort of their home. You can order your preferred craft ing materials online, pick them up or have them dropped off to you for a virtual party led by Nailed It instructors. The studio also sells personalized gifts made by the experts in-person and online.

ARTISAN LEATHER CRAFTS AND PICTURE FRAMING
Restoration isn’t only for antiques. Wheth er you need to restore the wear and tear on your designer handbag, want to wrap your furniture in exotic leather to match your style or simply need a frame for your di ploma, Artisan Leather Crafts and Picture Framing is a full-service shop. The compa ny, however, is best known for their mas tery of handmade, custom leather goods like purses, bags, belts, gun holster, knife sheaths and wine carriers.
“Even if you wanted to go overseas to manufacture it, we’ll make the prototype and give you all the necessary measure ments and patterns for you to then be able to have someone else manufacture it for you,” Spence said.
They frame unusual items too. “The things that we take on to frame, traditional ly, would not be framed. Most frame shops would not be able to handle the thought process,” owner Craig Spence said. He val ues the ability to talk face-to-face with cus tomers about their vision as they look over the souvenir or heirloom to be displayed.
His crew also offers a variety of services from passport photos to oversized painting frames.
His goals include opening more framing locations throughout Broward County as well as producing a “high-end line of luxury goods,” mainly handbags for women made with exotic leather.

RUBY’S ACADEMY FOR HEALTH OCCUPATION
Ruby’s Academy for Health Occupation is a vocational school specializing in home health aide, medical assistant, and practi cal nursing training since 1993, along with other industry certifications. “We cater to the community. My number one clients are African-American women from the ages of 35 to 60 [years old],” Director Carolyn Sut ton said. While the pandemic stalled many businesses, Ruby’s Academy thrived and attracted even more students. Many peo ple who lost jobs in hotels or other tourism businesses have sought to transition into the healthcare field.
To accommodate the large influx of in terested students and to remain compli ant with COVID-19 protocols, the academy reduced class sizes from a maximum of 20 students to just 10 per class and shortened the training period. “Once the students have completed the program we can send them straight to an agency, so they can hire them, [and] they can start working,” Sutton said.
Ruby’s Academy remains hopeful for the rest of the year. They plan to add two more programs to their roster and make financial aid available to students. “So they’ll be able to afford a lot of our programs and pay for them later,” says Sutton. rubysacademyhealth.com 5950 W. ARUN’S INDIAN KITCHEN & TACO MASALA
The first Arun’s Indian Kitchen location opened fourteen years ago and receives endless accolades, including a No. 6 listing in Yelp’s annual Top 100 Restaurants in the US.
“This is our second location … and we’re very happy to be here,” Chef Yash Sareen said about Lauderhill. “The food is made with the same ingredients as back home in India where the owners and I are from. We make the recipes we grew up eat ing. There’s no fusion or mellowing down, we’ve kept it authentic.” While it is exciting to serve those who know authentic Indian food, the restaurant also offers a few staple dishes that are a perfect introduction to the cuisine as well as fast-serve tacos or bowls. The menu offers numerous options for veg ans and the health conscious.
“COVID has been a little bit of a hurdle but we’ve been able to overcome it pret ty successfully,” Sareen said. “Food is the game we love to play, and we hope to con tinue to do this as long as we can go.”

Like most restaurants that had been affected by the pandemic, Donna’s foot-traf fic slowed. However, customers could order from a variety of delivery services — includ ing Uber, DoorDash and GrubHub — in ad dition to calling in their takeout orders. Gor don said customer safety came first. Beyond following all safety precautions highlighted by the CDC, Donna’s also hired a professional cleaning crew twice a month and their staff went the extra mile to perform double-duty sanitization on a daily basis. Despite the add ed costs, Donna’s lowered their prices and donated food to first responders and health care workers. Gordon said he’s grateful for his customers. “I know things are getting bet ter,” he said. “We really thank the community for staying with us.”

FAT WAYNE’S SEAFOOD AND CARIBBEAN RESTAURANT
In only its first year, Fat Wayne’s has be come popular among young adults, espe cially Caribbean visitors and locals with Caribbean heritage.“The combination of seafood and Jamaican food in one spot makes us unique,” Owner Tajuanna Miller said. Miller stated that shrimp is the top seller, but the restaurant offers a range of Caribbean dishes, including escovitch fish, brown stew chicken, curry chicken and ox tail. Customers can choose from seafood options such as lobster, fried conch, crab, snow crab and fried snapper. All come with a choice of sauce: old cajun bay, Fat Wayne’s sauce, lemon pepper, honey garlic, garlic parmesan and others. The menu also in cludes pasta and hibachi.
For contact-free eats, customers can or der for delivery from services like Grubhub and Ubereats. In response to the pandem ic, Miller said they also lowered prices and started running promotional giveaways. Although faced with a rough start, Miller hopes to franchise Fat Wayne’s in the fu ture.

IZZIBAN SUSHI & BBQ
When looking for a unique dining experi ence and memorable night out, Izziban Sushi & BBQ is a popular choice. Very few restaurants in the area offer similar cuisine and you can have fun grilling at your own table. What makes Izziban stand out is the all-you-can-eat option, perfect for a fam ily outing or a meal with friends. “You may have places that do grill at the table but it’s not all-you-can-eat,” Manager Hannah Chung said. “We get everyone from every where coming around, even Miami.”
For a set price, you can sizzle a range of Korean meats at your table and indulge in a large sushi menu. The la carte menu brims with so many Korean and Japanese dish es, you would be hard pressed not to find something delicious, from rangoon to pat bingsoo. The popular all-you-can-eat salad bar was temporarily placed on hold due to the pandemic, while a BBQ at home kit was introduced to counter the times. Dinein customers will find the atmosphere re mains the same comfortable and welcom ing family setting.

THE JERK MACHINE AT LAUDERHILL
The first of the chain of Jamaican restau rants opened in Lauderhill in 1989, and The Jerk Machine has been powering for ward ever since. Founders, owners and op erators, Desmond and Catherine Malcolm, wanted to offer a taste of home. “We offer a full line of Jamaican cuisine, like oxtail and curry goat so very authentic from the homeland of Jamaica,” Malcolm said. But it isn’t just the food that feels like home as the warmth and friendliness of the island are a huge part of the vibe. “We love our customers,” Malcolm said. “We know our customers, and we serve every customer as an individual.” The feel of community isn’t a gimmick though, as the award win ning entrepreneurs are also extremely ac tive in community work, as well as striving to hire and buy locally to better support their neighbors. In keeping with this sense of community, when the lockdowns hit, they kept things local, relying on their ca tering, online orders, take-out and delivery. Rather than pay third-parties, they mitigat ed costs by manning their own delivery ser vice. They are looking forward to a return to normalcy and to the next 32 years in Lau derhill.

JOY’S ROTI DELIGHT
For twenty nine years, Joy’s Roti Delight has been sharing their West Indian cuisine of predominantly curries and rotis with the Lauderhill community. Co-owner Pradeep Sawh believes the atmosphere helps to set his eatery apart. “Once you walk into my restaurant, we try to have that home feel ing,” he said. “That once you open the door, you’re home.” The longevity of this restau rant is apparent in how they adapted after a slight downturn due to COVID-19. Cus tomers could no longer hang out and busi ness slowed, but Sawh said they adapted by doing a lot of call-in business and work ing with a private, local delivery company. When asked what the outlook is like for the company, Sawh’s prompt reply was, “Anoth er twenty nine years!”

MILLIE’Z DELIGHTS
Fast food is sometimes considered the op posite of the full-flavored delicious indul gence of home cooking, but Millie’z De lights found a way to give you both. The company offers up three flavored packs of fully blended seasoning batter mix: The Flex, The Mellow and The Heat. The premeasured mix “can be used as a batter or seasoning for frying grilling and baking,” chief financial officer CeCe Davis said. Cus tomers now can cook up home-style meals with less time in the kitchen as there is no measuring or following recipes beyond preparing the meat or vegetables you plan to use. “We’re trying to find new ways to market and put ourselves out there to get more exposure,” Davis said, describing how the company had to shift its launch plans because of the pandemic. “We’d like to get into all the stores in South Florida.”
Buyers can purchase mixes online. Or ders also can be shipped to Jamaica, with plans underway to provide a similar service to customers in Canada and England.

PEOPLE’S CHOICE RESTAURANT*
For more than 32 years, this family-owned restaurant has served Jamaican cuisine seven days a week, offering typical Sunday family recipes such as oxtail, curry goat, cow foot and jerk chicken. Most known for their authenticity and freshly made meals, customers can expect to get bang for their buck thanks to generous serving sizes. At tracting locals from across the Caribbean diaspora, Owner and Manager Junior Bow man said,“People’s Choice feels like home. It’s not the typical restaurant. People come to hang out and have drinks at the bar.” People’s Choice also offers its island flavors through third-party food delivery services like Postmates, UberEats, Door dash and GrubHub. The restaurant also caters to small and large businesses, and Bowman himself delivers food if patrons request catering services totaling more than $100. Backed by their years of contin ued success, Bowman is optimistic for the future as “the most authentic Jamaican cuisine in Broward County.”

WIMBOS CRAZY POTATOES
Potatoes are the ultimate comfort food, and Tavaris Wimbley offers up this great staple on his extensive Wimbo’s menu with as many permutations and combinations as you could possibly imagine. “We have our own product when it comes to the loaded baked potatoes. We’re the only one that does them and we load the baked po tatoes to your satisfaction,” Wimbley said. Other delicious indulgences are toppers: cheese, steak, shrimp, chicken in various forms from crispy to curry, and even lob ster. Wimbley mixes up the menu with spe cialty offerings. “Switch it up, you know, so people can come in and have a choice of something that they can’t get every day.” The menu however, is varied enough to of fer that anyway. It also features racks of rib, wings, BBQ and other comfort foods. The business has been offering online ordering for pick-up and delivery, but while we asso ciate comfort food with home, his goal is to eventually present another unique experi ence: comfort food paired with fine dining.

To maintain customer interest through the pandemic, Bohemi Chic added curb side pickup in addition to focusing on build ing its ecommerce and online presence. “We really stepped up our game in regards to social media,” Thione said. “We are actu ally doing better than we did pre-COVID.
