The Edgar Mills Health Center is a public health and social services center providing primary care and other services on a sliding fee scale, including to people who are uninsured. As a division of the Florida Department of Health in Broward County, the center also connects families to the federal WIC nutrition program, family planning services, and children’s dental care.

2-1-1 Broward is a 24/7 counseling agency that connects people to health care, social services and community support programs. The agency caters to critical social needs such as emergency financial aid, housing and shelter, food, child care, health care, mental health support, summer and after-school programs, career training placements, and relief from abuse. 2-1-1 Broward saves people the stress of sorting through endless arrays of organizations, websites, and phone numbers to make the right connection that suits their needs. Northwest Federated Woman’s Club of Broward County, Fort Lauderdale

FOR: YOUTH AND ELDERLY PROGRAMMING AND WELLNESS

For more than 80 years, the Northwest Federated Woman’s Club of Broward County, has been serving area residents, providing resources, attention, and programming for youth and the elderly.

The Active Senior Program offers people above 60 a forum to engage, stay active and enjoy recreational activities, such as field trips, games, arts and crafts, and special events. The club offers the Irma Allen Adult Day Care during work hours as well as the Alzheimer’s Disease Initiative to care for Alzheimer’s and dementia patients in a safe and friendly atmosphere. The Health and Wellness Program provides monthly screening, medication management, and health and nutrition lectures for the elderly. The club also offers transportation and paratransit services to help clients travel to and from the center, depending on location and eligibility.

In addition, the club helps seniors apply for the Emergency Home Energy Assistance Program, which aids qualifying seniors with their electric bill payments. For information on this program, call 954-714-3500.

Two programs serve the county’s young residents. Youth Academics and the Arts Community Outreach engage people aged 5 to 17 with vital information and a fun approach that fosters personal and community development. FOR: SENIOR AND SPECIAL NEEDS TRANSPORTATION

Broward County’s Transportation OPtionS (TOPS!) program includes paratransit and bus pass packages that promise safe and reliable transportation to connect people and communities, especially seniors and people with special needs. TOPS! rides cost low one-way fares paid to the driver. (Exact amounts required.)

The paratransit program, offered weekdays from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., is a door-to-door service for individuals with physical or mental disabilities that prevent them from using public buses. To qualify for the paratransit program, one must complete an application, and a written notification will be sent within three weeks. Meals on Wheels South Florida

Meals on Wheels South Florida collaborates with government agencies, other nonprofits and volunteers to fulfill its mission of combating hunger, providing over a million meals to more than 10,000 seniors every year.

Meals on Wheels delivers healthy home meals and serves congregate dining sites that allow seniors to interact. The organization provides other programs and services for seniors, such as nutrition counseling, medically tailored meals, grocery shopping help, friendly visitation and meals for companion pets.
