melbourne

the destination Experience all the good things life has to offer in one city: fine dining and hot nightlife, arts and culture, innovative retail and world-class events. Melbourne has it all. Food for thought

If you ate at a different restaurant for breakfast, lunch and dinner every day for years, Melburnians would still be able to tell you about a secret haunt or local favourite that you’d managed not to experience. Whether it’s a low-key catch-up with friends or a celebratory splash-out, there are choices to suit all moods and occasions. Eat from the kitchens of celebrity chefs, including the likes of George Calombaris and Shannon Bennett, taste the cuisines of the city’s diverse range of nationalities, and experience exquisitely fresh local produce and the finest Victorian wines. Oh, and the coffee is beyond compare.

4 melbourne the destination

Night moves

The evening never ends with dessert in Melbourne. This is a city famed for its bars. Everyone talks about the hidden gems tucked into the CBD laneways, but those on a night out these days are looking up, quite literally. The latest hotspots are on the rooftops, where you can enjoy a chilled glass of chablis or cocktails mixed by some of the city’s best bartenders. Afterwards, adjourn to a late-night speak-easy, shake it at a club or head to one of Melbourne’s famed pubs to catch some live music.

Style setting

Historic city arcades lined with boutiques, character-filled villages boasting a slew of independent retailers and vibrant local markets with stalls of one-off treasures are just some of the retail options available to those like to shop in Melbourne. The city’s denizens have nurtured their own style - think understated and artistic - and there are more than enough stores to satisfy the urge of admirers thinking of taking the look home.

Culturally speaking

You’ll often hear people say that there’s always something going on in Melbourne - and they’re right! The city is Australia’s cultural heart. World-class galleries host blockbuster exhibitions and superb permanent collections, while tiny lanes are daubed with street art that is lauded around the world. On the stage, there are always theatre, musicals, opera and dance to be enjoyed, from both major companies and more independent outfits. And if all that isn’t enough, Melbourne is a city of festivals, with comedy, film, music and the arts celebrated throughout the year when the finest performers from around the country and the globe arrive to ply their trade.

tastes of the city

Ask a local for directions to places to eat, drink or find music in Melbourne - the reasons are many. Streets of plenty

Was it down this laneway, or that one? Many of Melbourne’s prized restaurants, bars and late-night venues are tucked away out of view. Explore the city and surrounding neighbourhoods for a true taste of the city.

Life on a plate

It’s a fact that Melburnians take food very seriously; it’s a boon for visitors who get to share the rewards dished out by fabulous chefs who delight in using the finest local produce. In the CBD, some of our best-known chefs have new ventures: Gallic gourmet Philippe Mouchel has PM24, Frank Camorra opened MoVida Aqui, seafood specialist Maurice Esposito has St Peter’s, and Guy Grossi has launched the Venetian-inspired Merchant. Don’t forget the dining precincts just out of the city, either. There’s Brunswick Street in Fitzroy, St Kilda (Andrew McConnell has just opened Golden Fields, an Asian eatery, there), and the latest hotspot, Smith Street, where you’ll find Huxtable, Easy Tiger, Gigibaba and Josie Bones clustered in one block.

Raise a glass

From tiny hidden bars furnished in eclectic style to designer enclaves frequented by the city tastemakers, there is no end to the potential of opportunities for a nightcap or two. For a glass of local wine and a plate of cheese, tiny Von Haus is worth seeking out. For superbly mixed drinks, there’s no better place in the city than the moodily lit 1806, named for the year a cocktail was first served. Another sexy parlour, this time with an Oriental vibe, is New Gold Mountain. For a younger crowd, try vintage-bedecked Sister Bella or ‘bar in a shipping container’ Section 8.

High times

In the past couple of years, publicans have gone to new heights, opening bars on the roofs of their establishments. Kick back with a cold beer among the faux flamingos at Palmz, upstairs at the Carlton Hotel. Order a jug of sangria at Emerald Peacock or local favourite Madame Brussels. Very relaxed is the Rooftop Bar on top of Curtin House (during summer, it also becomes Rooftop Cinema), while those looking to impress - or be impressed - should head to Siglo, with its sparkling views of Parliament House, above the Melbourne Supper Club.

Food, festivals, fun

Celebrate the culinary arts during some of Melbournes favourite gourmet events. Taste of Melbourne (25 - 28 August 2011) Set in the exquisite Exhibition Building, this is a long weekend teaming the country’s finest chefs with favourite producers and winemakers. Melbourne Food & Wine Festival (2 - 21 March 2012) MFWF, the largest festival of its kind in the world, celebrates its 20th birthday. Expect the biggest names in food and wine to arrive for the party. Good Food & Wine Show ( June 2012) Enjoy a weekend of tasting, demonstrations and workshops at the Melbourne Convention Centre.

starts here Down that tiny laneway, in that Victorian arcade, along a tree-lined street‌ The shopping scene in Melbourne offers cutting-edge design and fashion favourites, all with a distinctive backdrop. Under one roof

Need proof that atmospherics and shopping go hand in hand? Wander the historic arcades of the city that house unique boutiques. The mythical figures of Gog and Magog watch over the Royal Arcade, which first opened in 1870. Climb the stairs to Marais for a bewitching blend of local and international designer labels, including Lanvin, Balenciaga and Viktor & Rolf. Downstairs is contemporary Australian jewellery designer Canturi, and you might want to stock up on chocolate at Koko Black. Equally as beautiful and historically significant is the Block Arcade, modelled on the arcades of London and Milan. Also explore the GPO, which has become the destination for fashionistas in the CBD with its selection of stores that include Willow, Sass & Bide, Mimco and Leona Edmiston.

Leading locals

If you really want to get the Melbourne look, it’s essential to discover some of the local designers, many of whom are sought out by trendsetters across the globe. In both the CBD and some of the city’s other shopping precincts – Chapel Street and Fitzroy, for example – you’ll find Melbourne-based labels including Gorman, Obüs, Claude Maus, Trimäpee and Alpha 60. Want to discover the next big thing? Head to the Fashion Incubator at Melbourne Central and Design A Space in Manchester Lane, both of which showcase up-and-coming designers in a retail environment.

Accessory all areas

Update your look with a trinket or two. Melbourne is home to some of the most amazing accessories stores you’ll find anywhere. Contemporary jewellery design is on display and for sale at e.g. etal, Pieces of Eight and Gallery Funaki. In any of these, you’ll find limited-edition and one-off pieces by local artisans. If quirky style (or great gift ideas) is what you’re seeking, try Little Salon, Glitzern and Counter at Craft Victoria. For more than a decade, Christine Barro has been travelling the world and bringing back the best jewellery, bags, scarves and hats for her exclusive subterranean boutique, Christine.

Start the journey

Sometimes the options can be overwhelming, so get an overview of what the CBD has to offer on one of Hidden Secrets’ popular Lanes and Arcades tours. The three-hour walk uncovers hidden offerings and includes a city map and shop guide so you can return later. Hidden Secrets also offers specialty tours, including A Vintage Outing, for lovers of days gone by.

famous for fashion Shopping takes on another dimension when you hit Chapel St, Toorak Rd and High St. Three words of advice - just do it. Shopping is a serious pursuit in the City of Stonnington, and you can’t say you’ve shopped in Melbourne until you’ve shopped on Chapel St. So here’s the challenge: shop the entire length of Chapel St from Toorak Rd to Dandenong Rd. You’ll need stamina to explore this 3km shopping strip which is home to renowned designers, independent boutiques and funky retro fashion. Stylish Toorak Rd, South Yarra and Toorak Village is graced with the best local and international designers as well as speciality shops filled with must-have shoes, bags, jewellery and gifts. High St, Armadale has been voted by Melburnians as their favourite shopping strip. With a sophisticated range of fashion labels as well as art galleries,

furnishings and homeware stores, you’ll easily spend the entire day. Come back again to explore Hawksburn Village, where you can stylishly outfit the whole family starting with tinies and tots. Shop for gifts, books and exquisite jewellery. Specialist food stores add to the mix. Serious shoppers need to refuel every few hours. The entire area is also noted for its cafes and restaurants. The coffee is always excellent (this is Melbourne, after all) and the passing parade is always fascinating. Get your fix of culture while you’re in the city. Art, design, theatre, dance and music are on offer day and night! Riverside revelry

The rejuvenated arts precinct at Southbank has an ever-evolving array of productions and exhibitions for all to enjoy. The NGV International hosts the incredibly popular Melbourne Winter Masterpieces blockbuster each year: this year, Vienna, Art & Design is on display. The Melbourne Theatre Company has a new home in an architecturally designed building, right next door to the Melbourne Recital Centre. Nearby, the Malthouse Theatre and ACCA (Australian Centre for Contemporary Art) have less mainstream artistic offerings.

Discover federation

The square, that is. Opened in 2002, it has since become Melbourne’s meeting place, with a number of cultural, retail and gourmet offerings. A favourite with visitors and locals alike is The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia, which focuses solely on local art. The Aboriginal collection is particularly strong, with both artefacts and works by major indigenous artists, including Queen McKenzie, Emily Kam Kngwarray and Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri, on permanent display. Also on site is the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI). Both permanent and travelling exhibitions dealing with the history and workings of the film industry are shown here, and there’s also a cinema showing arthouse films and cult classics. See the work of contemporary street artists at No Vacancy Project Space, and drop in on Saturdays for the Fed Square Book Market, held in the Atrium. One of the most unusual uses of space happens at Fed Square twice a year ( July and December) when the Melbourne Design Market takes over the car park. Fashion, homewares, lighting, furniture and plenty more by selected artisans are available for sale.

CBD culture

Even a day wandering the streets can give you a taste of how art is integrated into all aspects of Melbourne life. Down tiny laneways - try Hosier, Caledonian and Union Lanes - you’ll find the work of not only this city’s most exciting street artists, but also creations by others who’ve visited from around the world. Each year, the City of Melbourne also reveals its Laneway Commissions, a series of contemporary public works driven by artists and their ideas. In 2011, submissions were sought from Victorian-based indigenous artists, and the results will be unveiled in August and September. Also in the streets and laneways you’ll find many independent artist-run galleries. West Space has developed an enviable reputation in arts circles for its artistled program that includes practitioners working experimentally in a diverse range of mediums, from craft and visual art to music and writing. Equally innovative are the exhibitions at Craft Victoria, which supports contemporary designers and makers. (Its shop, Counter, is also the perfect spot to buy unique gifts.) Some really interesting galleries, including Blindside and Pigment Gallery, can be found in the Nicholas Building. This is also the home of many of Melbourne’s creatives - jewellers, milliners, designers - although you’ll need to make appointments to see them or visit on an Open Day.

Melbourne dreaming

Many people assume that indigenous culture can only be experienced in the outback, but Melbourne, part of the Kulin Nation, is an important meeting place for the Wurundjeri, Boonerwrung, Taungurong, Djajawarrung and Wathaurong people. Apart from the excellent collection of Aboriginal art at the NGV: Ian Potter Centre, there are several other places to view indigenous works in Melbourne including the Koorie Heritage Trust, Gallery Gabrielle Pizzi and Flinders Lane Gallery. On Tuesday and Thursday each week, visitors can join indigenous guides for a 90-minute walk through the Royal Botanic Gardens to discover the traditional uses for native plants. At the Melbourne Museum, Bunjilaka is a centre where Aboriginal people interpret their culture and heritage for both indigenous and non-indigenous people.

Discovered wandering

Don’t spend precious browsing time being lost. Join one of Bernadette Alibrando’s Walk to Art tours taking in street art, artist-run spaces, commercial galleries and artists’ studios. You can ask questions of the consultant leading the walk as well as the artists and curators you meet. There are a number of tours in the CBD and inner suburbs, and all participants are given a starter pack so they can keep exploring.

visit bayside Bayside has inspired some of Australia’s most renowned artists for over a century. Prominent members of the celebrated Heidelberg School painted the beautiful coastline from Brighton to Beaumaris which remains as stunning today was it was in the 19th century. Art is a distinguished tradition of the Bayside area, and contemporary art is as prolific and as valued as the works of ages past. Come half an hour out of the city centre and take a look at the new Bayside Arts & Cultural Centre in the ornate Brighton Town Hall exhibiting some of the best available examples of visual and audio visual art by Australian artists. Exhibitions will present the works of artists who have lived, worked and played in the area. Exhibitions will present the works of significant, mid career and emerging artists such as John Olsen, one of Australia’s most accomplished artists;

multi-award winning landscape artist John Wolseley and contemporary indigenous artist Lorraine ConnellyNorthey. The BACC often runs programs that provide unique opportunities for discussions with the artists themselves. To get the Bayside Arts and Cultural Centre, catch a train on the Sandringham line and get off at Middle Brighton station. That’s the experience of a hot-air balloon ride with Global Balloons, which offers hourlong flights at sunrise each day (weather permitting). For those who like to keep their feet planted on terra firma, there are other opportunities to enjoy nature, even in the midst of the city. Sleep easy

Melbourne has much for her visitors to see, do, eat and experience. We like to entertain and will always put you up for the night with splendid service, warm hospitality and friendly smiles. As reflected in the city at large, historic heritage properties sit alongside modern architecture; sweeping bay views tower above street level doorsteps and balconies open to sea breezes. Pick up the key to your room, suite, apartment or home away from home and be comforted by a staff that knows the city you want to know.
