The evening never ends with dessert in Melbourne. This is a city famed for its bars. Everyone talks about the hidden gems tucked into the CBD laneways, but those on a night out these days are looking up, quite literally. The latest hotspots are on the rooftops, where you can enjoy a chilled glass of chablis or cocktails mixed by some of the city’s best bartenders. Afterwards, adjourn to a late-night speak-easy, shake it at a club or head to one of Melbourne’s famed pubs to catch some live music.

It’s a fact that Melburnians take food very seriously; it’s a boon for visitors who get to share the rewards dished out by fabulous chefs who delight in using the finest local produce. In the CBD, some of our best-known chefs have new ventures: Gallic gourmet Philippe Mouchel has PM24, Frank Camorra opened MoVida Aqui, seafood specialist Maurice Esposito has St Peter’s, and Guy Grossi has launched the Venetian-inspired Merchant. Don’t forget the dining precincts just out of the city, either. There’s Brunswick Street in Fitzroy, St Kilda (Andrew McConnell has just opened Golden Fields, an Asian eatery, there), and the latest hotspot, Smith Street, where you’ll find Huxtable, Easy Tiger, Gigibaba and Josie Bones clustered in one block.

Raise a glass

From tiny hidden bars furnished in eclectic style to designer enclaves frequented by the city tastemakers, there is no end to the potential of opportunities for a nightcap or two. For a glass of local wine and a plate of cheese, tiny Von Haus is worth seeking out. For superbly mixed drinks, there’s no better place in the city than the moodily lit 1806, named for the year a cocktail was first served. Another sexy parlour, this time with an Oriental vibe, is New Gold Mountain. For a younger crowd, try vintage-bedecked Sister Bella or ‘bar in a shipping container’ Section 8.

High times

In the past couple of years, publicans have gone to new heights, opening bars on the roofs of their establishments. Kick back with a cold beer among the faux flamingos at Palmz, upstairs at the Carlton Hotel. Order a jug of sangria at Emerald Peacock or local favourite Madame Brussels. Very relaxed is the Rooftop Bar on top of Curtin House (during summer, it also becomes Rooftop Cinema), while those looking to impress - or be impressed - should head to Siglo, with its sparkling views of Parliament House, above the Melbourne Supper Club.

Celebrate the culinary arts during some of Melbournes favourite gourmet events. Taste of Melbourne (25 - 28 August 2011) Set in the exquisite Exhibition Building, this is a long weekend teaming the countryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s finest chefs with favourite producers and winemakers. Melbourne Food & Wine Festival (2 - 21 March 2012) MFWF, the largest festival of its kind in the world, celebrates its 20th birthday. The rejuvenated arts precinct at Southbank has an ever-evolving array of productions and exhibitions for all to enjoy. The NGV International hosts the incredibly popular Melbourne Winter Masterpieces blockbuster each year: this year, Vienna, Art & Design is on display. The Melbourne Theatre Company has a new home in an architecturally designed building, right next door to the Melbourne Recital Centre. Nearby, the Malthouse Theatre and ACCA (Australian Centre for Contemporary Art) have less mainstream artistic offerings.

The square, that is. Opened in 2002, it has since become Melbourne’s meeting place, with a number of cultural, retail and gourmet offerings. A favourite with visitors and locals alike is The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia, which focuses solely on local art. The Aboriginal collection is particularly strong, with both artefacts and works by major indigenous artists, including Queen McKenzie, Emily Kam Kngwarray and Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri, on permanent display. Also on site is the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI). Both permanent and travelling exhibitions dealing with the history and workings of the film industry are shown here, and there’s also a cinema showing arthouse films and cult classics. See the work of contemporary street artists at No Vacancy Project Space, and drop in on Saturdays for the Fed Square Book Market, held in the Atrium. One of the most unusual uses of space happens at Fed Square twice a year ( July and December) when the Melbourne Design Market takes over the car park. Fashion, homewares, lighting, furniture and plenty more by selected artisans are available for sale.

Even a day wandering the streets can give you a taste of how art is integrated into all aspects of Melbourne life. Down tiny laneways - try Hosier, Caledonian and Union Lanes - you’ll find the work of not only this city’s most exciting street artists, but also creations by others who’ve visited from around the world. Each year, the City of Melbourne also reveals its Laneway Commissions, a series of contemporary public works driven by artists and their ideas. In 2011, submissions were sought from Victorian-based indigenous artists, and the results will be unveiled in August and September. Also in the streets and laneways you’ll find many independent artist-run galleries. West Space has developed an enviable reputation in arts circles for its artistled program that includes practitioners working experimentally in a diverse range of mediums, from craft and visual art to music and writing. Equally innovative are the exhibitions at Craft Victoria, which supports contemporary designers and makers. (Its shop, Counter, is also the perfect spot to buy unique gifts.) Some really interesting galleries, including Blindside and Pigment Gallery, can be found in the Nicholas Building. This is also the home of many of Melbourne’s creatives - jewellers, milliners, designers - although you’ll need to make appointments to see them or visit on an Open Day.

Melbourne dreaming

Many people assume that indigenous culture can only be experienced in the outback, but Melbourne, part of the Kulin Nation, is an important meeting place for the Wurundjeri, Boonerwrung, Taungurong, Djajawarrung and Wathaurong people. Apart from the excellent collection of Aboriginal art at the NGV: Ian Potter Centre, there are several other places to view indigenous works in Melbourne including the Koorie Heritage Trust, Gallery Gabrielle Pizzi and Flinders Lane Gallery. On Tuesday and Thursday each week, visitors can join indigenous guides for a 90-minute walk through the Royal Botanic Gardens to discover the traditional uses for native plants. At the Melbourne Museum, Bunjilaka is a centre where Aboriginal people interpret their culture and heritage for both indigenous and non-indigenous people.

Discovered wandering

Don’t spend precious browsing time being lost. Join one of Bernadette Alibrando’s Walk to Art tours taking in street art, artist-run spaces, commercial galleries and artists’ studios. You can ask questions of the consultant leading the walk as well as the artists and curators you meet. There are a number of tours in the CBD and inner suburbs, and all participants are given a starter pack so they can keep exploring.
