Norwegian Scenic Route Ryfylke The Norwegian Scenic Route Ryfylke through Ryfylke is 260 kilometres long and travels Rv. 13 and Fv. 520. The route through Ryfylke – from Oanes by the Lysefjord to Hårå in Røldal – is one of the longest of Norway’s 18 Norwegian Scenic Routes. Ryfylke’s three most famous attractions are Lysefjord, Preikestolen and Kjerag. As you travel the scenic road you will discover picnic areas set in beautiful surroundings, and cultural monuments that are centuries or even thousands of years old. Your journey starts at Oanes in the south, overlooking the mouth of the Lysefjord. From the lodge Preikestolen Fjellstue, slightly further northeast, you can take a rewarding hike to the top of Preikestolen (a two-hour walk). A little further north you will find The Norwegian Stonehenge, Solspeilet, at Klungholmen and prehistoric rock carvings at Solbakk. Visit Årdal old church as you drive through Årdal or climb the world`s largest Jær chair by the ferry quay in Hjelmeland. Skomakarnibbå rises high above the southern shore of the Jøsenfjord. On the last leg to Røldal in the north, you can drive across the Røldalsfjellet mountains or follow the valley through Suldal and Nesflaten.

On the south side you find the fjordside village of Jelsa, with its old wooden houses and distinctive church, are well worth a detour. Then you can pause at the picnic area overlooking the Lovrafjord, before you continue to Sand. In this village do visit Ryfylke Museum, and stop at the Salmon studio at Sandsfossen falls to watch powerful salmon swim upstream to their spawning areas and cross the new Høse bridge. Relax with a cup of coffee and savour the panorama from the café. During summer you can visit the museum farm Kobeinstveit with activities for the entire family. Make a stop at Nesflaten where you can learn about hydropower and visit the design hotel Energihotellet. On the north side of Sandsfjord, just before you reach Saudasjøen, is Svandalsfossen falls. A series of stairs climb up close to the waterfall – you can really sense the force of the water! Near the town of Sauda you can visit the zinc mines at Allmannajuvet. New buildings opened at Allmannajuvet in 2016, designed by Swiss architect Peter Zumthor. In Sauda town centre you can enjoy friendly shopping. From Sauda and Allmannajuvet the journey continues to Røldal. The road over Saudafjellet, which takes you through a varied landscape and a 900-metre high mountain pass, was completed in 1960. The scenery is magnificent and parts of the road are quite narrow, so please take your time. Saudafjellet pass, on Rv. 520 between Hellandsbygd and Røldal, is closed in the winter when the snow can pile up to five–six metres thick! During winter use the alternative route Sand–Røldal along Rv. 13, where freely grazing goats may share your road. Either way, be sure to make many stops on the route, savouring the beauty and tranquillity of Ryfylke. Walk the mountains or go sightseeing on the fjord. Count the fish at the salmon studio at Sandsfossen falls in Suldal, and taste early strawberries from Fister and delicious fruit from the orchards in Ryfylke.

Magnificent fjord experiences await you in Ryfylke. This fjord region is close to the cities of Stavanger and Haugesund, and it is very easy to get to. Norwegian Scenic Route Ryfylke, the Rv 13 road and the Fv 520 road are the main traffic arteries through Ryfylke. The road extends from the famous Lysefjord in the south, then passes through beautiful villages and small towns on the way north, crosses several fjords. On the last leg to Røldal in the north, you can drive across the Røldalsfjellet mountains or follow the valley through Suldal and Nesflaten.

HIGHLIGHTS

2. PREIKESTOLEN Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock), rising a sheer 604 m above the Lysefjord, is the most famous attraction in Ryfylke and Rogaland. From Preikestolen Lodge there is a trail to the top; the plateau offers an astounding view of the Lysefjord and the surrounding mountains. Allow 4 hours for this demanding 8-km round-trip walk, which climbs 350 m. Preikestolen may also be viewed from a sightseeing boat on the fjord. Main Season: April–October. Guided tours: November - March 1. KJERAG Towering to an impressive 1094 metres, the Kjerag is the highest peak near the Lysefjord. A trail from Øygardstøl, situated by Lysevegen road far above the village of Lysebotn, takes you to the mountain plateau. The truly daring climb is out onto Kjeragbolten, a boulder wedged into a crack 1000 metres above the fjord. Allow 6 hours for this demanding 10-km hike, which climbs 570 m. Kjerag may also be seen from a boat on the fjord. Season: June–October. 14. NES – VIGLESDALEN The hike from Nes to Viglesdalen goes through a beautiful, varied terrain. Starting at Nes in Årdal, you pass three waterfalls – Sendingsfossen, Hiafossen and Granefossen – before crossing the old stone bridge between Hiavatnet and Viglesdalsvatnet lakes. The old road to Viglesdalen was built in 1907–1912 to move livestock. Viglesdalen was farmed from the Middle Ages until the 1880s. Duration: 4 hours round trip. Rating: Easy. Season: Year round 31. HOVLANDSNUTEN From the trail head at Risvoll School in Saudasjøen. Follow the old forest road towards Nordstøldalen, past the Fairytale Forest, to Brekkestølsbråtet, 300 m. Continue on the level gravel road, before the trail climbs up toward Hovlandsstølen pastures. A new trail, with stone steps built by Nepalese sherpas ascends up to Hovlandsnuten. The hike as a whole, from fjord-side to summit, is referred to as the Saga Trail. Allow 4 hours for this demanding 6.8-km round-trip hike. Season: May–November. 24. GULLINGEN Suldal offers an excellent network of trails – with some-thing suitable for everyone! Gullingen is a popular recreation area during both summer and winter. Enjoy walks through beautiful birchwoods or challenging summit hikes. Destinations include Reinsnuten (1144 m), Gullingen (979 m), Nattlandsnuten (955 m), Skardnuten (907 m) and Fjellberg (796 m). Pick blueberries to your heart’s content, or fish the mountain lakes. For maps, please visit www.ut.no. Hiking season: Mai – November.

19. LAKSESTUDIO Next to the salmon ladder in the Sandsfossen waterfall at Sand is one of the first salmon studios to be built in Norway. The lower part of the salmon studio is under water, allowing us to observe the fish through two large glass windows, as they move up the ladder. You can watch the salmon during the period when they come to spawn, from July to October. Open June - September. www.visitsuldal.no

4. FOSSANMOEN The Icelandic horse centre at Forsand offers family accommodation, riding, an indoor climbing wall and other activities. Riding camps and instruction. Excellent trails nearby. 6. JØRPELANDSHOLMEN RECREATION AREA A pedestrian bridge leads to Jørpelandsholmen, a small island just outside Jørpeland village centre. In addition to a stroller- and wheelchair-friendly 2.1 km long trail around the island, Jørpelandsholmen has boat moorings, a pier for kayaks, good swimming spots, a 12-hole Frisbee golf course, a lean-to shelter, and handicap-accessible toilets. In addition there are figures carved by a world champion chainsaw sculptor. Bring the family for a day of fun!

27. SWIMMING FACILITIES IN SAUDA Sauda’s indoor swimming facility includes a water slide, a pool with diving boards, a toddler’s pool and a sauna. There is also a year-round outdoor swimming pool with bubble and water jets to massage your neck and back, a pool with diving boards, a water slide and a toddler’s pool. Regardless of the season, the water is a comfortable 32˚C!

11. THE FAIRYTALE FOREST Welcome to the Fairytale Forest in Årdal in Ryfylke – an adventure for the senses. An exciting walk through the mystical forest in Bønardalen, where you can experience trolls and other creatures among the trees. For the entire family. 1.2 km, 1 hour. Season: all year.

ACTIVITIES ZIPLINE Experience the 350-metre Zipline at Preikestolen Mountain Lodge – one of the longest and highest in Norway! With a stunning view of the fjord and mountains, you speed through the air, high above cliffs and treetops. The Zipline starts near Preikestolen trail head. 28. A GUIDED TOUR OF THE OLD ZINC MINES From mid June till the end of August, you can join a guided tour of Allmannajuvet gorge with the old mining road, and enter the mine itself. Participants are equipped with helmets and headlamps. Bring a jacket, as the mine is cold and humid. The tour gives you a feel for the life of the mine workers. www.saudaferie.no

WATER SPORTS Suldal is blessed with beautiful fjords and many rivers and lakes, which are perfect for a variety of adventures. Rent a canoe, or join a kayaking trip with an experienced guide, from Padleakademiet, Mo Laksegard, Vikane Hyttetun cabins, or the Gullingen Turistsenter resort. THE ARCHITECTURAL ROUTE Experience world class and historic architecture while driving through a spectacular landscape over mountains and along fjords, rivers and lakes in Suldal, Sauda and Røldal. The Architectural Route has the best collection of architectural works in fjord Norway and is the only tourist route in Norway highlighting both modern and historic architecture in a day trip format. The route is part of the Norwegian Scenic Route Ryfylke. Total driving time 2 ½ -3 hours (not including time spent at stops).

19. HØSEBRUA BRIDGE An observation bridge offers and intense experience of Sandsfossen falls. Designed by Rintala Eggertsson Architects and completed in 2012, the bridge is beautifully illuminated. The bridge and Salmon Studio are a must-see experience and the perfect break when you’re travelling the Norwegian Scenic Route Ryfylke. www.visitsuldal.no

23. HYDROPOWER ARCHITECTURE ON NESFLATEN The power station built in the 1960s was designed by architect Geir Grung. Also the homes, and the hotels that once housed management and visitors, were built in a functionalistic style during the era of intense hydropower development in Suldal and Røldal. The hydropower station, the workers’ dwellings and the hotel are some of the finest and best-preserved examples of Norwegian functionalism. www.energihotellet.no

28. ALLMANNAJUVET The Allmannajuvet zinc mines were in operation from 1881 to 1899. During these years a total of 12,000 tonnes of zinc ore were extracted. Today, the mining area is a museum. Designed by Peter Zumthor and opened in 2016. The buildings in the gorge are designed in an industrial construction style to embody the story of the mines. The installation consists of a gallery, a café building, toilet and parking facilities, paths and stairs. For opening hours www.saudaferie.no

26. SVANDALSFOSSEN The Svandalsfossen waterfall is a mighty spectacle when the river runs high. The 540 steps, completed in 2006, bring visitors into close proximity with the powerful waterfall and the lush, magical vegetation that characterises the area. FJORD FISHING Fishing is exceptionally good in Ryfylke, especially in the fjord around the islands of central and northern Ryfylke. No fishing card is required to fish the fjord with a drop-line or fishing rod– even if you hook a salmon or trout! Fishing is allowed year round, but is prohibited close to some river mouths.

SULDALSLÅGEN Suldalslågen is one of the best-known salmon rivers in Norway. At the end of the 1800s, an Englishman by the name of Walter Archer, an avid angler and amateur salmon researcher, bought the fishing rights along the entire Suldalslågen river. He banned all gear other than the fishing rod. As a result of the ban on nets and weirs and other commercial fishing gear, Suldalslågen became extremely popular with sports fishermen. Most years the average salmon caught weighs an impressive 10 kg. The record salmon so far is 22 kg. GUEST HARBOURS In Ryfylke you will find many sheltered and undisturbed beaches and coves, and smooth rock faces where you can lick the sun while the kids explore tide pools and catch crabs.

SAUDA Winter in Sauda is ideal for everyone who enjoys skiing and snow-filled fun! You can put on your skis right outside your house or cabin, or head for the largest alpine skiing centre in southwestern Norway; Sauda Ski Centre. Floodlit trails at Lyngmyr and in Slettedalen. During the winter season, there is a special Ski Boat from Stavanger to Sauda. www.rodne.no

There are excellent guest harbours in the municipal centres Sand, Sauda, Forsand, Jørpeland and Hjelmeland. You can buy fresh bread and traditional food to be enjoyed on the quay, or enjoy dining on dishes made from the very best local ingredients, while taking in the view of the fjord.

For a magnificent view of the fjord, you must walk to the top of Preikestolen or the Kjerag mountains. Unforgettable! If you’re ready for the big challenge, hike the Lysefjord circuit. 4. FLØRLI During the last 100 years Flørli has been transformed from a combined rural and industrial area to a cultural area. Get to know the story behind the hydroelectric power station, the water pipes feeding the station and the 4444 steps built along the water pipes, supposedly the longest wooden stairs in the world. Exhibition and café in the old power station. Accommodation, pub and boat harbour during summer.

5. LYSEBOTN www.visitforsand.com Innermost in the magnificent Lysefjord lies the village of Lysebotn, the perfect base for exploring the fjord and nearby mountains. 9. RØSSDALEN This is a hike with easy terrain, about 30 min. In Røssdalen there is plenty of space for tents, fire pits and a toilet. Røssdalen is part of Frafjordheiane landscape conservation area because of it's diverse animal and plant life. For a longer hike you can go further to Indravatnet, about 1-2 hours one way. 6. SOKKANUTEN Great view of the Lysefjord! The hike is about 1.5 hours and towards the end of the trip can you have a bath in Eikelitjønn. Parking at Lysefjord Hyttegrend. Brugsløa is an old barn with art exhibitions, a café and other offerings. It is open every Sunday during the summer. Visit the mill park and the flea market, and enjoy fresh homebaked goods in unique surroundings. 6. THE TOWN BY PREIKESTOLEN www.preikestolenvillage.com The Ryfylke town of Jørpeland is situated a short drive from the starting point of the trail to Preikestolen. Jørpeland offers just about every kind of shop you might need, as well as hotel, restaurants, art galleries, beaches, guided kayaking, a cinema, a gym, a bowling centre, etc. From the harbour, buses depart daily to and from Preikestolen in the main season. 6. SCULPTURE PARK AT JØRPELAND The amazing collection of sculptures in Rosehagen by the harbour, and throughout Jørpeland, is the result of the only international artists’ symposium on stainless steel sculpture. Artists came from throughout the world to join the event – a cooperation between Scana Steel Stavanger, the Municipality of Strand and Melting Pot.

1. A STONE INSCRIBED WITH RUNES, AT KJØLEVIK Copy of the Kjølevik stone with inscriptions of Old Norse runes, which probably dates back to the time of migrations in 400-450 AD. The original stone is exhibited at the University of Oslo.

5.THE PREHISTORIC ROCK-CARVINGS AT SOLBAKK The rock carvings include at least 40 figures, mostly ships, but also rings and spirals. What is unique is that two very different types of boats are portrayed. One type has a single and double-lined hull and curved ends, while the other is shorter and has straight ends.

9. THE NORWEGIAN-STONEHENGE ON KLUNGHOLMEN On the islet of Klungholmen near Jørpeland village is a stone circle, an artwork by The Norwegian artist Stian H Skjæveland. At the centre of the eight-metre circle of 12 standing stones is a towering steel obelisk decorated with symbols, runes and ornaments, many derived from the Oseberg Viking ship. The Norwegian-Stonehenge can be seen from The Norwegian Scenic Route Ryfylke and from the hiking trail at Jørpelandsholmen. Klungholmen may be visited year round.

LAKES AND RIVERS: • Lake Refsvatn, just below Preikestolen fjellstue, where you may take a refreshing swim after returning from the top of the famous cliff. • Bjørheimsvatnet near Holta • Østerhusvatnet in Bjørheimsbygd. You may also find good conditions for swimming in many of the other lakes and rivers.

9. JØRPELANDSHOLMEN RECREATION AREA A pedestrian bridge leads to Jørpelandsholmen, a small island just outside Jørpeland village centre. In addition to a stroller- and wheelchair-friendly 2.1 km long trail around the island, Jørpelandsholmen has boat moorings, a pier for kayaks, good swimming spots, a 12-hole Frisbee golf course, a lean-to shelter, and handicap-accessible toilets. In addition there are figures carved by a world champion chainsaw sculptor. Bring the family for a day of fun!

The trail map for Strand and Forsand municipalities shows suggested hikes to beautiful destinations, including Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock). Many trails start at Foreneset, Bjørheimsheia, Holtaheia and Jørpelandsvågen (with parking in Jørpeland centre). – From Jørpelandsvågen you can hike to Preikestolen and other destinations. Other summit hikes from the Jørpeland village centre are Førlandsåsen (520 m) and Tunglandsfjellet (388 m).– From Foreneset there is a trail to the top of Heiahorn, 773 m and the highest peak in Strand municipality.– The summit of Topphøna is one of the recommended destinations in the Holtaheia moors. The trail passes a monument to the children and adults who died in airplane crash in 1961.– A trail from Bjørheimsheia leads to Reinaknuten (787m), the queen of the area.– From Preikestolen Fjellstue lodge you can hike to numerous destinations in Strand and Forsand municipalities. Another great family walk is to Rinatrollet.

ATTRACTIONS IN HJELMELAND 1. JÆR CHAIR (Jærstol) Factory outlet at Aksel Hansson and Slåke Møbelfabrikk, producers of traditional wicker chairs (Jærstol) at Hjelmeland. The Jær chair is a genuine product of Hjelmeland and the same designs are made today as a century ago. On its 100th anniversary in 1999, the municipality received the world’s largest Jær chair. THE FAIRYTALE FOREST (Eventyrskogen) Children will be delighted to walk this trail in Årdal, discovering trolls and goblins in the forest. It’s a tour through many fairytales, and information boards tell the story of the wood sculptures. 1 hour. 7. SKOMAKARNIBBÅ Unusual rock formation on the Jøsenfjord. THE RITLAND CRATER (Ritlandskrateret) From Kleivaland, follow the marked trail to the lean-to shelter, enjoying a view of Ritlandskrateret, a crater made by a meteorite 500 million years ago. Hjelmeland is served by fast passenger ferries that criss-cross the Ryfylke fjords and offer a convenient passage to the urban delights of Stavanger. Express boats depart from Nesvik, Hjelmeland, Randøy and Fister every day, and buses leave from Hjelmeland and Årdal. A ferry runs between Songesand and Lysebotn, Forsand and Stavanger. (The road between Årdal and Songesand is open in the summer, but closed in the winter.) Tickets on the ferry must be booked in advance.

5. BLÅSJØ RESERVOIR Tel: 52 79 05 60 Sesong: Juli - September Blåsjø is Norway’s largest artificial lake, and kept in place by 11 small and larger dams. See the impressive dams Oddatjørn dam and Førrevass dam. The access road is usually open by July. Parts of the road are great for bicycling. VENTEROMMET Located in Ropeid peninsula in Suldal, Venterommet is a waiting room for travellers taking the express boat to Sauda and Stavanger. The building has large glass panes that bring the fjord and mountainside up close. Venterommet was opened in 2004 and is part of the architecture along Norwegian Scenic Route Ryfylke. Architect: Jensen & Skodvin. FLESÅNA FALLS IN BRATTLANDSDALEN The scenic road through the valley of Brattlandsdalen has fascinated many travellers. In the past, the valley was one of the highlights of the Sand–Suldal– Røldal–Odda tourist route; today it’s part of the Norwegian Scenict Route Ryfylke. Brattlandsdalen has excellent vistas. Be sure to stop at Flesåna falls, and do consider a stroll along the old road.

SUGGESTED HIKES On a walk near Sandsfossen falls and Høsebrua bridge you can see fascinating architecture and experience salmon up close in the Salmon Studio. This walk is right near Sand village centre and the Norwegian Scenic Route Ryfylke. (3 km, 1 hours, green). A fine summit hike from Sand centre is Hellandsnuten. (747 m, 9 km, 6 hours, red).The area near Gullingen is family-friendly (4). Options include the loop walk around Skuteheia (14 km, 4–5 hours, blue/red), and the ascent of Reinsnuten (1144 m, 14 km, 4–5 hours, red). Also consider a hike to Stranddalen, the most popular lodge in the Ryfylkeheiane moors (3 hours, blue). At Suldalsdalføret, you can enjoy a walk along Ritlandsvatnet lake (6 km, 2 hours, green), or ascend Stråpanuten for a stunning panorama (4 km, 2 hours, blue). From Nesflaten village you may be tempted to a walk up Nipe, which offers a magnificent view (707 m, 5 hours, 7 km, red).

ATTRACTIONS IN SAUDA 1. ÅBØBYEN AND INDUSTRIAL WORKERS MUSEUM Tel: 52 79 29 50 www.ryfylkemuseet.no Åbøbyen is a well-preserved township established for industrial workers, managers and staff who worked at Sauda’s smelting plant. It was the largest in Europe when it was built in 1916. The Industrial Workers Museum is housed in one of these homes. Here you can gain firsthand insights into how workers and their families lived during the 1920s and 1960s, observing the contrasts. The museum also has an exhibition of photographs documenting life and work at the smelting plant. For a guided tour round Åbøbyen and the Museum of the Industrial Worker, please contact the Ryfylke Museum. 4. THE ZINC MINES AT ALLMANNAJUVET Tel: 52 78 42 00 www.saudaferie.no In conjunction with the establishment of the Norwegian Scenic Route Ryfylke, renowned Swiss architect Peter Zumthor designed the new facility at Allmannajuvet gorge. It includes an exhibition on the history of the mines, a café and service facility, and visitor parking. Zinc mining in the Allmannajuvet started in 1882 and lasted until 1899. The mine entrance is reached by an impressive road that winds along the river. The facility is open from mid June to mid August. During the off-season, it is open to groups by appointment.

5. JONEGARDEN FARM AT HUSTVEIT (RYFYLKE MUSEUM) Tel: 52 79 29 50 www.ryfylkemuseet.no The Jonegarden farm has been in the same family since the 1600s. The Ryfylke Museum has recently reconstructed an old stave-built barn. A nature trail leads you through a unique culture landscape to Kvednafossen falls, where you will see a gristmill, grain drier, a sawmill and a workshop – all of them water-powered. How to get here: Follow Route 520 towards Haugesund, 13 km westwards from Sauda. Guided tours, please contact the Ryfylke Museum.

HIKING TRAILS – “ON TOP OF THE WORLD IN SAUDA” Enjoy well-marked trails through seven valleys, summer or winter. Hovlandsnuten is a distinct peak that rewards hikers with a great view, as well as beautiful scenery on the way up to the summit. The entire family can also enjoy trails near the Sauda town centre. The Norwegian Trekking Association (DNT) has a number of cabins and lodges available to hikers. Organised walks are held throughout the year. Fagerheim Collection - A collection of more than 100 carvings by Ola Fagerheim show a western Norwegian community at work, play and worship in the early 1900s. Part of the collection may be viewed in Sauda Hall. For more information please call, tel. 52 78 62 42. Anna’s Café and Tinghaug are situated in Saudasjøen, by Rødtjernet pond and the golf course. Tinghaug, the home of artist Samuel Tveit, has been renovated and is now used as a café. Open Sundays 12 – 4 pm, May–September. Homemade cakes, waffles, coffee and more. Relax with a bite to eat and a cup of coffee, indoors or outdoors. Also enjoy the exhibitions by local artists.

FISHING AND HUNTING Along the Saudafjord, there are many excellent spots for shore fishing. Throughout the region there are fine fishing streams and lakes in beautiful natural settings. There are also opportunities for hunting small and large game. Fishing and hunting cards may be purchased at Intersport Sauda, tel. 52 78 23 92.

NATURAL ATTRACTIONS

ROCK CLIMBING Sauda has several bolted rock-climbing routes, of varying degrees of challenge. For further information, please call Olaf Årthun, mob. 482 52 328, and check out Sauda Klatreklubb on Facebook.

Svandalsfossen is a waterfall just before Saudasjøen, by trunk road Fv 520, a part of the new Norwegian Scenic Route Ryfylke. From beneath the bridge, you can really experience the falls up close, or you can ascend the trail and stairs up to the main waterfall itself. The “kettle pots” (jettegrytene) in Åbødalen are an attraction well worth the walk. These kettle pots in the rockface were scoured by swirling water and gravel and other abrasive materials. Perfect for a refreshing bath! Kastfoss falls are beautifully situated just a stone’s throw from the town centre. Follow the trail to Kastfoss and experience great nature. Høllandsfossen falls are also located a short distance from the town centre. A charming old stone bridge leads you to the waterfall. The Røldal Road between Sauda and Røldal, is part of the new Norwegian Scenic Route Ryfylke. In the course of just 15 minutes, you pass from the fjord to alpine mountains through magnificent varied landscapes.

Wear sturdy footwear for hiking, such as mountain shoes. Wear wind and waterproof hiking clothing, and bring extra clothing in case of change in weather. Bring along something to drink so that you do not risk dehydration. Bring along snacks and food. You never know what could happen, and it is good to have some extra food in case of any emergency. Check out the weather conditions before going on a hike. Get to know all the emergency telephone numbers in Norway. Good physical condition is a plus when you plan to embark on a strenuous hike. Some of our most spectacular hikes are not for everyone, such as Kjerag. Hiking with kids – choose the kids’ friendly hikes. Get informed. Visit one of our tourist offices when you have arrived at the destination. Or contact us before you arrive. We can most likely answer most of your questions, and we would be happy to help. Hiking on your own? It can be a beautiful thing to experience being alone and at one with nature, nevertheless, inform someone about where you are, when you are planning to return, and how they can reach you if you don’t. During winter you might need a guide for some hikes.
