Los Cabos offers many special things this time of year. We are in the peak of our whale season, and I think I can speak for most locals when I say that it never gets old. Spotting a whale in its vast natural habitat is thrilling and it feels like spotting a treasure, although there are so many in our Baja waters that they really are not difficult to find! Keep your eyes peeled and you will most likely be able to catch a spout, a tail or even a breach right from the beach or your hotel room window. Another great thing about being in Los Cabos this time of year is that the surf on the Pacific side of the Baja Peninsula can be very good due to the exposure to the west swells, so read along to learn more about the surf spots to visit, along with some info about taking a lesson if you're new and curious about this exhilarating sport. There is an instant love for this place where the desert meets the sea. When artist Mark Gabriel moved to Baja Sur, “I had a few misconceptions about the place, and as it turned out, myself as an artist. I knew coming here would inspire a renewal in my painting, and I wanted to dig into the local folklore and find cultural narratives I could translate onto canvas, but I was unaware of the depth of magic I would encounter.” A long-time salvager, Gabriel found himself collecting debris that washed up on beaches around Todos Santos: wood that appeared to come from ruined boats, or bits of someone’s life torn away in a hurricane then returned to shore. “I didn't realize they would be so important to my growth as an artist until I started using them as canvas to paint on.” Gabriel's iconic paintings of whales soon emerged. “These majestic beasts loom large down here; it's impossible not to be drawn into their deep watery world. The whales came to me in dreams, and they were no longer bound by the ocean; they seemed to be flying.” What started as small works on salvaged driftwood blossomed into large-scale paintings, often 4 by 5 or 6 feet. In early 2019 Gabriel joined the impressive roster of artists at Pez Gordo Gallery, and his work graces the homes of collectors in Cabo, as well as internationally. “By allowing myself the freedom to move from the dream whales, to paintings of ranchero musicians and adobe towns folk, and then to the newer works which feature socialites of the glamorous 60’s—70’s jet set age, I realized I'm still exploring the themes of mythological creatures in our modern world.” Gabriel credits his recent success to his new 'Pueblo Magico' home. “I'm surrounded by a supportive network of friends, artists and collaborators. My partner in life, Jessie Wallace, is at the center of my world. Together we're building a studio and gallery that will enable us to grow and continue our love affair with Baja Sur.” It's a love affair and a life set beneath expansive oceanic skies filled with flying whales, while the retro jet set party to the sounds of old world mariachi music, and each scene is imbued by the all-encompassing magic of Baja.

Los Cabos (“the capes” in Spanish) is located on the southernmost tip of the State of Baja California Sur and consists of four main areas: Cabo San Lucas, San José del Cabo, Todos Santos and the East Cape. La Paz is the State Capital. If you take a look at the "The Tip of Southern Baja" map on page 12 you can see that the highways and towns form a loop, which you can easily drive in one day. The Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez meet at the very tip of the peninsula. It's very clear when you're on the Pacific side; the waves are much larger and powerful, and the winds are stronger and the climate and beaches are very different than on the Sea of Cortez side. It's usually a few degrees cooler, which is very pleasant during the warm summer months.

“The aquarium of the world”

is how Jacques Cousteau described the Sea of Cortez. It is said that eons ago, back when the Earth and Continents were still taking their shape, the edge of Mexico split from the mainland to form the Gulf of California and the Baja Peninsula. This allowed the Pacific Ocean to rush into the gap and create the Sea of Cortez, or as some call it, Mother Nature’s own fish trap. Hundreds of varieties of fish and mammals found their way into this "trap" and either stayed in the warm shallow waters or ventured down into the cool two mile-deep San Andreas Fault. For millenniums, the Colorado River has been dragging its rich minerals and nutrients into the Sea of Cortez, aiding the living species to thrive in these waters. In the months of January through March, Gray whales make their yearly migration from Alaska to give birth to their young in the shallow and warm waters of the Sea of Cortez. In Southern Baja, however, it's not just about the ocean, in this naturally magical place the mountains meet the desert and the desert meets the ocean. The Sierra de la Laguna is a mountain range that lies at the southern end of the peninsula. Above 800 meters in elevation dry forests transition to pine-oak forests, and you can find wild mushrooms, wild horses and deer. Ready to explore?

Cabo San Lucas

This tourist friendly town, also just known as “Cabo,” is located on the tip of the Baja California peninsula and is full of entertainment for every age and liking. The Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean meet at Land’s End, where you can observe the beautiful rock formations and the famous Cabo Arch. In Cabo San Lucas you can find Medano Beach (the liveliest beach in the Los Cabos area), an impressive marina and countless restaurants and bars that keep the town alive day and night.

San José del Cabo

Walking around downtown San José will allow you to experience a traditional Mexican town. You will find yourself surrounded by colorful buildings and quaint cobblestone streets that lead to the town’s picturesque zócalo (main plaza). Over the years, San José has become an artistic and cultural centre with numerous fine art galleries in its downtown art district as well as world-class restaurants. San José has a beautiful beach where you can take a horseback ride to explore the estuary that is home to many different bird species.

The Corridor

The corridor is the 40 km highway that connects Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo (about a 20 minute drive). Along this highway you can find various hotels, luxury ocean front homes, and championship golf courses. Have your camera ready and make a roadside stop at the Costa Azul view-point for photo opportunities and a refreshing coco frío (cold coconut).

Todos Santos

Located on the Pacific Ocean side of the peninsula, Todos Santos is an oasis where artists and surfers flock to enjoy the culture and excellent surf. Home to the famous Hotel California, this charming town offers great restaurants and a cooler climate than Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo due to the breezes coming from the Pacific.

East Cape

People often call it “the old Cabo” because of its pristine beaches and small fishing towns such as Buena Vista and Los Barriles. The East Cape begins just east of San José and extends about 100 miles up the Sea of Cortez coast. Sixty miles outside of San José is the Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park, Nationally Protected coral reef that offers outstanding snorkeling and scuba diving. Very popular for fishing and surfing, the East Cape also attracts kite surfers, campers and those who just want to get away from it all.

La Paz

La Paz is the capital of the state of Baja California Sur and is known for its warm people and beautiful beaches. This authentic Mexican city (as well as the general south Baja region) has been rated as one of the safest in Mexico and still maintains the small town feel that is very welcoming for tourists. La Paz is a departure point for tours and charters to the stunning Espiritu Santo Island as well as whale watching excursions. Stroll down the colorful malecón (boardwalk), walk hundreds of feet in waisthighwater at Balandra beach or have a fine dining experience; La Paz has a lot to offer.

Loreto

Loreto offers the best of both worlds for tourists who long to escape to an 'authentic-Mexico' with settings that take you back-in-time along with ocean activities that rival that of any other modern coastal city. In Loreto you'll find historic buildings such as the enchanting Mision de Loreto - a mission-style church that was built in 1697 as well as The Islands of Loreto which boasts Mexico's largest marine preserve where dolphins, seals, turtles and sea lions all play in the sea. For those who are partial to adventures on land; there is hiking, biking, and nature-tours that fill up a camera with pictures of radiant natural settings. Loreto is the perfect place for everyone from honeymooners to large families.

ATMS

Dollars are accepted almost everywhere but you will usually get your change back in pesos. The exchange rate varies every day, but some places have a set rate posted.

The easiest way to get pesos is to simply withdraw money from an ATM in Los Cabos. Bank ATMs give the daily exchange rate (best possible rate). Examples include Banorte, Bancomer, Santander, Banamex, Banregio, and HSBC. Non-bank ATMs located in the streets or marina will charge higher fees. Some ATMs only give you dollars, some only pesos and some give you the option to withdraw both. Pay close attention to what currency you’re withdrawing and try to get as much cash as possible in one transaction to avoid paying high fees.

CASH OR CARD?

Visa, Mastercard and American Express credit cards are generally accepted, but you often run into cash only establishments. Always ask beforehand and carry cash just in case. Keep in mind your bank will most likely charge you international transaction fees if you pay with your card.

GROCERIES

In Cabo San Lucas, Walmart and Costco are good options and easy to get to. You can always find a taxi outside of these stores. San José has a Walmart, La Comer, Chedraui Selecto or Soriana. Mercado Santa Carmelo or California Ranch Market are good options for specialty foods and dietary restrictions. If you need a quick grab, OXXO stores are reasonably priced convenience stores located all over town.

HOW DO I DIAL?

DRIVING

Renting a car will allow you to enjoy the freedom of exploring Los Cabos. Driving in Mexico might be intimidating, but if you just go with the muddled flow, you will realize that there is some organization within the chaos. If you are pulled over by local police for committing a driving infraction, the standard procedure is for them to take your Driver’s License. You will then have to go to the Police Station to pay your ticket and pick-up your license. There are two types of gasoline: Magna, which is regular, and Premium. Lleno (pronounced ye-no) means full. Major credit cards are accepted. Tipping the gas station attendant around $10.00 pesos is customary. There is a toll road that takes you from the airport to Cabo San Lucas or to the Todos Santos highway. By taking this road you avoid the taxi and shuttle traffic on the main highway. The cost varies from $63.00 to $75.00 pesos, depending on your destination. ALTO STOP

With calm waters, extraordinary fishing and perfect weather, some may argue that boating is the most popular attraction in Los Cabos. Whether you want to take a cruise to Santa Maria Bay on a luxury yacht or wake up at the crack of dawn for a fishing adventure, there are endless options to fit your needs.

BOAT RENTALS Private yachts and sailboats There are many charter companies that can accommodate your needs. What you do on your trip is really up to you, but it will typically consist of a tour of the landmark arch, a few hours of fishing, and a cruise to one of our beautiful bays for a swim. Most boats have fishing equipment and a knowledgeable crew, but the biggest difference between a yacht and a fishing boat rental is the cost. Fishing Boat Rentals You can always fish on a yacht, but cruisers, pangas and super-pangas are a more affordable option. Cruisers accommodate larger groups and are more comfortable when the sea is rough on a windy day. THE MARINAS Marina Cabo San Lucas The area’s largest commercial marina features 380 slips and accommodates vessels of up to 375 feet. the area with 200 available slips for boats up to 400 feet. Amenities are similar to Marina Cabo San Lucas, though the boatyard’s 150-ton travel lift can accommodate larger vessels. FISHING There’s a reason why the world’s richest fishing tournament - the Bisbee’s Black & Blue - has taken place in Los Cabos for over thirty years. This part of the world offers abundant sea life and an exceptionally high catch success rate, no matter what your level of fishing experience is. What to Expect Most charters include a fishing license, bait, tackle and equipment. Some also include food and drink or these amenities can be added at an additional cost. It is better to leave early; trips usually begin at 6:00 and 7:00 am and last around 6 hours. Cost will depend on the number of people in your party and the size of the boat you choose to rent. It is customary to leave the crew a gratuity of 15% to 20%. Bait and Tackle Most likely, the boat you charter will include your bait and tackle. If you need your own fresh bait, you may buy it along the Cabo San Lucas Marina or the crew you hire may also stop to buy it from the local fishermen on your way out.

Buggy Tours, ATV/UTV Rentas, and Biking There are several local companies which offer ATVs, buggies, and other off-road vehicles for trail and beach cruising. Strap on some goggles and hop behind the wheel of one of these off-road racers for an afternoon of fast-paced fun! Vehicles include typical ATVs or enclosed rail buggies or RZR ATVs. Tours are typically three hours, and drivers must be 16 years of age with a valid Driver’s License. If pedal-powered rides are more your speed, look into renting a mountain bike and taking a riding excursion, or maybe just a beach cruiser and joining a guided bicycle tour of town. Horseback Rides, Nature Walks, and Bird Watching Los Cabos (particularly San José del Cabo) offers a number of horseback excursions for all ages. Saddle up for a sunset guided beach ride, venture up a hidden canyon trail, or just sit back in the shade while experienced horse trainers give the kids lessons in horsemanship – there’s something for everyone! San José also boasts a natural estuary and nature preserve. Enjoy a peaceful, self-guided nature walk to observe some of the lushest landscape in the area. Species of flora and fauna are abundant: dozens of species of cactus, lizards, and birds can be spotted on this solitary walk, just a few minutes from downtown. Or try a parasailing trip and gain some altitude to enjoy beautiful views of Cabo while tethered firmly to a speedboat! Water Parks Wild Canyon Adventures has recently opened its brand new water park section, which you can access with your park day pass, a perfect way to spend a full day of fun family activities. Wild Wet Fun Water Park, located about 30 minutes from San José del Cabo, has shallow pools and small slides for young children, water mushrooms and a pirate ship. For the adrenaline seekers, several fast and large slides stand tall and mighty and offer a great view of the beautiful surrounding mountains. To get there take HWY 1 north from the San José International Airport towards La Paz and East Cape. After about 15 miles, the exit for Caudaño and the water park will be at KM 66. Follow this road for a few minutes and you will find the park on your right. There are plenty of signs to guide everyone to this wonderful piece of paradise. After arriving in Santiago, turn right up the little hill towards the town square. SEASONS June through November: The summer months are known to be the best as the Southern Hemisphere’s swells send great waves to the Pacific, Cabo San Lucas, San José and the East Cape. December through February: East Cape and Costa Azul are on the flatter side. The Pacific can be good this time of year because it’s exposed to the west swell. March through May: This is the windy season. Swells are consistent and you’ll run into fewer crowds.

There is something special about paddling out and finding yourself floating in the ocean with just a paddle and a board. Stand up paddling is a great way to see marine life and to get a great workout while enjoying nature. At Medano Beach you can rent boards in several locations. Certain companies offer paddling lessons and some have yoga classes on the board.

KITE SURFING SNORKELING SPOTS Cabo offers several methods for snorkeling. You may drive to a local beach and swim out, book a tour with one of the many popular companies, or charter a private boat. Tours are typically two or three hours. Stay away from the Pacific side of the peninsula; its strong currents make it very dangerous for any kind of water sports. Pelican Rock A quick five-minute ride from the Cabo San Lucas marina or Medano Beach is all it takes to get to this fish-attracting rock. Lover’s Beach

This popular and uniquely-named beach is accessible only by boat. Be on the look-out, however, as the water is not roped off for swimmers. Santa Maria Bay Snorkel tours regularly visit Santa Maria Bay. If you choose to drive there, it’s an easy swim from the shore to the reef on the right side of the cove. Chileno Bay Snorkelers will find a safe, roped-off area for swimming at this common tour destination. Cabo Pulmo A Natural Marine Reserve in the East Cape, and may offer the best snorkeling in the area. This eight-fingered coral reef is about a 1.5-hour drive from San José del Cabo, but it is well worth it!

This sport is most popular in the East Cape due to the El Norte winds. Playa Norte (the north-east side of the beach) in Los Barriles is said to be the most popular destination and is also the location for a professional kite-boarding school. La Ventana is also a popular spot and is closer to La Paz. There is less wind in Los Barriles than in La Ventana, but the surf is bigger. The best months are January, February, March, October, November, December. Every January, the Lord of the Wind tournament takes place in Los Barriles.

Over the past two decades, ecotourism has been valued as a fast-growing industry worldwide, observing this phenomenon in regions and entities with natural resources at hand, for controlled exposure to the general public in a low invasive manner. In addition to offering a recreational alternative to those who practice it and direct and indirect benefits to the communities where they are located, it fosters and creates social and economic incentives through its conservation. If we focus this type of tourism to the marine environment, several reports cite a spill of up to $ 50 billion in expenses, including activities such as diving, shark, whale and bird watching, as well as tours on kayaks, paddle and sport fishing in its capture and release modality. In particular, whale watching in Baja California Sur has become a strong tourist product; the increase of national and foreign visitors, in addition to local families, who during the sighting season travel to various sites of this state to enjoy this natural spectacle, generates an important economic spill to these localities. Furthermore, some of these activities are tied with educational and research programs with several governmental and private institutions, in order to conduct data gathering and publish research results; playing a bridge role between scientific findings and dissemination of knowledge towards the general public. Mexico lodges transiently or with established populations about 40% of the known species of cetaceans in the world; and the registration in our state of them, is approximately 30%. From this total, some of the most emblematic species are grey and humpback whales; every year, they migrate to Californian seas and low coasts for reproductive and birthing purposes. Some sites considered sanctuaries for these animals are Guerrero Negro and the San Ignacio Lagoon; both belonging to the Vizcaíno biosphere reserve; Puerto San Carlos in Magdalena Bay and the protected area of flora and fauna of Cabo San Lucas in Los Cabos municipality. So if you find yourself close to these places and you are interested in witnessing an impressive natural show, do not hesitate and schedule a tour with one of the local operators in the area; just make sure it meets the legal requirements and licenses for this type of activity. In addition to witnessing the majesty of these giants, you will surely take back with you a great experience and a little knowledge about the subject, go ahead, dare and live it! *

• Whales belong to the order Cetacea, which includes whales, dolphins and porpoises. • The word whale comes from the Old English word whael. • Whales live in all of the Earth’s oceans. • The closest living relative to whales is the hippopotamus. They diverged about 40 million years ago. • Whales are either toothed (Odontoceti) or have baleen (Mysticeti). A baleen is a comb-like fringe on the upper jaw of the whale used to filter food. Toothed whales feed mostly on fish, squid, other whales and marine mammals, and baleen whales mostly on plankton, small fish and crustaceans. • Whales are mammals, they produce milk, are warm blooded, have lungs for breathing and some even have small hairs. • Whales have a blowhole which they use to breathe, baleen whales have two, and toothed whales have one. • They have flippers and have tail fins called flukes that they use to propel themselves through the water. Most species of whales have a dorsal fin on their back. • The sperm whale is the largest toothed predator on Earth. The famous book Moby Dick tells the story of a Sperm whale and a fisherman. • The Blue whale, a baleen whale, is the largest whale of all. The Blue whale is the largest animal to have ever lived on Earth. • The life spans of whales can be from 25 to 110 years, but some Bowhead whales live over 200 years. • A blue whale can weigh over 150,000 kilograms and be more than 25 meters in length. • Gestation period in whales can be from nine to 18 months and the calf can stay with the mother for up to one year or more. • Males usually mate with multiple females every year, but females only mate every two to three years. • Calves are regularly born in the spring and summer months. • The heart of a Blue whale can weigh as much as 350 kilograms or be the size of a small car. • Some whales like the Beaked whale and Sperm whale can dive two to three kilometers deep for up to two hours or more. • The blubber in whales serves as an energy reserve and insulation. • Most whales, especially baleen whales, migrate long distances from their cold-water feeding

grounds to warm-water breeding grounds each year. The longest confirmed migration is made by the Humpback whales that feed in the Antarctic waters and swim north to breed off Colombia and Panama. Some whales can travel as fast as 20 knots per hour. Whales can jump high, or breach, out of the water. Whales also thrust their tails out of the water and slap the water's surface. They also communicate with each other using lyrical sounds and these sounds can be heard for many miles. The most complex songs and beautiful songs that include recognizable sequences of squeaks, grunts, and other sounds are from the male Humpback whales. Whales are known to teach, learn, cooperate, scheme, and grieve. It is thought that whales sleep with one half of their brain resting while the other half keeps them from drowning and aware of predators.

So that is a bit of general information about whales, but here in BAJA we are lucky to receive the beautiful Gray whales each year, therefore I would like to list some cool facts about them:

The waters off Cabo San Lucas are producing dorado from 12 to 30 pounds. Tuna fishing remains good – with average fish range from 20 to 50 pounds with a few over 100-pounds. One caught by Steve Hammerschmidt, Huntington Beach, weighed 365 pounds. Billfish were taken, mostly striped marlin, using ballyhoo and live/dead mackerel as bait. One blue marlin, taping 400 pounds, hit on a purple/black/red lure and was released, plus a spearfish weighing 90 pounds was a rare catch for the area. Wahoo, along with roosterfish, a few jack, and bonito, were the best bet inshore. Puerto Los Cabos: The seasonal run of pelagic crab, drifting to the surface in masses were scooped up in nets for bait for red snapper (huachinango) averaging from 2 to 5 pounds to 15 pounds. The best close-to-shore action, from Santa Maria to La Fortuna, were dorado to 15 pounds. Roosterfish and sierra, using caballito or ballyhoo, were also being taken. Average catches consisted of a few dorado and a couple of small wahoo. Yellowfin action was slow on local grounds ranging from 10 to about 80 pounds. Jaime Bank, outside of Cabo San Lucas, was producing cow-sized tuna. There was a lack of billfish activity, although more mackerel are moving in the direction of San Jose del Cabo, which should attract the striped marlin. Some are there but are scattered. “The water is still warm, and the fish are still biting,” one local captain observed. The waters off East Cape are shared by windsurfers and anglers this time of year, and some thrive in the north winds, while others despise them. Offshore, there are a few dorado, small yellowfin tuna, and a striped marlin or two

for the lucky anglers. Inshore, its sierra and an occasional jack or rockfish around the rocky points dotting the coastline. The climate affects the ability to fish in La Paz. It’s been hard to put any boats out, and there aren’t that many folks wanting to fish anyway. They understandably get discouraged when they see the winds. Best to hang out and drink a margarita by the pool! The better fishing may be tucked in close to shore, especially in areas where you can find some protection from the north wind and waves. Most of the fish are inshore species – cabrilla, snapper, triggerfish, pargo, jack crevalle, and sierra – all fun and good eating. When the wind backs off, there’s still some10- to 15-pound dorado around plus some good action on 5-pound bonito. The larger issue has been finding live bait that might result in lures being the productive way to catch fish. Loreto’s Coronado Island was the place when the wind permitted, where yellowtail to 25 pounds were hitting the decks. The other fish were pargo and cabrilla doing a limited show. Dorado are still working bait schools found on the southern end, according to scuba divers. *

• They migrate to Baja every year and their round-trip journey can be from 15,000-20,000 kilometers. And it takes them from five to eight weeks to reach the breeding sites. • There are two groups of Pacific Gray whales, the east and west groups. • The Gray whale spends a few months in the lagoons of Baja. Some spots are San Ignacio lagoon, Ojo de Liebre and Magdalena Bay. The migration begins around October and finishes about April. They choose these sites due to their warm and calm waters. • They usually travel in groups of two or three, at a speed of about three to five miles per hour, and submerge for about five minutes at a time, or for 15 minutes or longer to feed. • Gray whales can be 15 meters long and weigh 35 tons. • They are baleen whales and reach maturity at about eight or nine years old. And the females give birth to one calf about every two years. • Newborns can be five meters long and weigh 1000 kilograms. • Gray whales visit Baja every year to give birth.

Lovers Beach Getting there is an adventure in itself, since it is reachable only by boat, kayak or any other water vessel. The easiest way to get there is to take a water taxi from the Cabo San Lucas Marina or Medano Beach. Your captain will cruise by the arch and the sea lion rock for some great photo opportunities. Walk to the other side of the rocks and you’ll find yourself looking at the Pacific Ocean (Divorce Beach). This side is very dangerous for swimming, so swim on Lover’s Beach side only. Location: Land’s End beside the famous arch. Tips: On occasion there are a few vendors who offer beer and water, but you won’t find any other services.

Medano If you’re looking for the action, this is where it is. El Médano (as the locals call it) is a 2-mile stretch of hotels, restaurants and bars, right on the sand. It’s a swimmable and familyfriendly beach with endless options for souvenir shopping. Numerous activities and water sports are available. If you want to take a water taxi to Lover’s Beach, this is the best spot to do it. Its stunning view of Land’s End and the vast entertainment options make this beach a must-see. Location: In the heart of downtown Cabo San Lucas. The beach is accessible by foot through the east side of the marina or via Avenida del Pescador. Tips: Be prepared to be approached by a lot of souvenir vendors. If you’re not there for the shopping, just respond with “No gracias.” Water sports are available such as jet skis, parasailing, flyboarding, stand up paddle boarding, kayaking, and more. Visit Lover’s Beach while you’re there.

Chileno Chileno Beach is a very popular location for snorkeling and swimming due to its calm waters. You’ll find tide pools at the left end of the beach and beautiful reefs offering excellent snorkeling and scuba diving. Public restrooms and showers are available, as well as a handicap ramp that takes you right to the beach. Location: Going from Cabo San Lucas towards San José, follow the signs for Chileno Beach Club near KM 14 of the main highway. Tips: Snorkeling visibility is often better in the early mornings and you’ll avoid the mid-day snorkel tours. Bring snorkeling gear!

DISCOVER

Santa Maria Santa Maria is a stunning horseshoe cove with coarse coral colored sand and abundant marine life. Boat excursions and private charters often stop here to enjoy the snorkeling and scuba diving that this National Marine Preserve offers. This family-friendly beach is relatively secluded; therefore, you rarely run into beach vendors. However, the beach does have brand new bathrooms and palapas. Location: Traveling west from Cabo San Lucas towards San José, follow the sign which reads “Santa María” and exit the highway at Km. 13. Follow the dirt road until you reach the parking area. Tips: Swim from the shore towards the rocks on the right side of the beach for a great snorkeling experience.

Palmilla Palmilla Beach is known for its family friendly calm waters and a mile-long stretch of beach. Located within the resort community of Palmilla, you will find yourself surrounded by oceanfront luxury homes and the One&Only Hotel. Pangas and fishing cruisers are available for charter, but you won’t find water sport rentals such as kayaks or jet skis. Location: Take the Palmilla ramp exit at KM 27. Follow the signs and turn into the main beach parking area before the entrance to the One&Only Hotel. Tips: Palmilla is popular among local families on the weekends, so arrive early if you want a palapa, or bring your own umbrella. No services are available.

Balandra A stunning bay in La Paz (the State's Capital) that will take your breath away. You can walk back and forth in the bay in waist-high water that is crystal clear. Follow the shore towards the north-east side and you will find the famous “mushroom rock.” You won’t regret visiting Playa Balandra! Location: A two hour drive from Cabo San Lucas. Once you're in La Paz, follow the main drag along the boardwalk, pass Costa Baja Resort and continue to wind around the coast and through the mountains until you see the signs for the beach. Tips: No bathroom facilities. There is a truck where you can buy water and snacks, but it is recommended to bring your own in case they are closed.

Cerritos Cerritos Beach is a popular surf spot and swimming here is relatively safe. The scenic 45 minute drive from Cabo San Lucas is well worth the trip as you drive along the pristine Pacific coast. You can rent a boogie board or surf board or even take a surf lesson. Location: Exit at KM 66 of the Cabo San Lucas to Todos Santos Highway. Watch the markers and look for the signs. Tips: Come prepared with food, drinks and beach gear. The ocean currents are strong and the waves can be quite powerful, so swim with caution.

The Pacific Vibe I remember the first time I headed out to the Pacific side about 22 years ago when I arrived in Baja. I took a bus trip from Cabo San Lucas to the town of Todos Santos, and right after we left and we entered the Baja desert I was amazed by the all extensive carpet of Cardon cactus that I saw. To me, the Pacific side has a special vibe for many great reasons. The mix of the Pacific beaches and the desert landscape with the Sierra la Laguna that rises very close to the coast of the Pacific Ocean, makes it for a very wonderful experience. The area from the town of Elias Calles to Todos Santos (a 30 mile range aprox.), is considered a micro climate due to the special conditions that exist from the breeze and humidity of the Pacific Ocean and the mountain range that acts as a container

for this semi-permanent mist that makes it fantastic for the organic agriculture industry in the zone. You will find the most amazing farm-to-table restaurants in the Pacific towns, which are Cerritos, Pescadero, San Pedrito, Todos Santos and Las Tunas. The people are very cool and friendly, the community has a lot of surfers, farmers, fishermen, musicians, chefs and all kinds of artists from all over Mexico and the world. It's a very charming place to visit. All the restaurants are great and there are fabulous boutique hotels too. To me, the must places to visit are Cerritos Beach and downtown Todos Santos, and of course if you happen to be a skater, the Pescadero Skate park is an awesome spot to go. Plus if the surf is down, this place saves the day for all surfers.

Baja Sur has great surf instructors and surf schools that offer the best lessons and equipment. Some general suggestions prior to doing a surf lesson are to get a good night sleep, eat nutritiously and light, stretch or do yoga, and do a few squats, sit ups and push ups. I am "goofy" which means I ride with my right foot forward and therefore face the face of the wave when it's going left. If you surf with your left foot forward that is called a "regular" surfer. Basically, a surf lesson can be divided into three parts: ocean environment, theory and practice. In ocean environment you learn and go over the environment you will be surfing in. For example, type of surf break, wave and beach, swell and ocean conditions, entry channel to wave break, currents and rip tides, hazards, reefs and rocks, type of bottom, other surfers and their surfboards, and sea life in the area. In the theory part of the lesson you go over your equipment and its parts, and the actual theoretical surf lesson on land where things are explained. And in the practice part of the lesson, you perform some surfing techniques on land with board on the sand, then go in the water with your surf instructor, and try catching waves by doing what has been explained as you are assisted by your instructor. During a surf lesson you will go over the following points: General safety: ocean environment. Learn about the beach you will surf and its potential hazards. Wave size, general conditions, type of bottom, currents, riptides, etc. Know everything about your equipment and using it: learn the parts of a surfboard and practice some techniques on land so that you can control your surfboard in the surf. Check the condition of your leash.

point with peaks. There are usually more right waves than lefts. Also, usually the best time is early morning before the wind starts. This beach is in Las Tunas town very near Todos Santos, which is about an hour north of Cabo San Lucas. This is not a beginner wave.

San Pedrito - round rock bottom break with mostly rights, but has a steep left tool. This wave is near the picturesque and agricultural town of Pescadero. When you arrive you will get a feel of Pacific island nature as you pass the tall grasses and coconut trees on the narrow corridor on the way to the beach. This is a very uncrowded beach and is an intermediate and advanced wave. It is a great spot for camping.

Cerritos Beach - this is the perfect spot to take surf lessons. The sand bottom beach offers the ideal wave for beginners and in the outer break the waves peak left and right, and also there is the pointbreak which has a large right on big days. The surf schools on the beach are all amazing so your experience is guaranteed no matter who you choose.

La Cur va - a little south of Cerritos near the town of Migrino is La Curva. A lot of local surf contests are held there. This is a deep water right pointbreak with large rocks. Great camping site with very little people and surfers. Great wave, but for more advanced surfers. Monuments - I would like to include this break on the list because it is located on the tip of the Baja Peninsula where the Pacific Ocean and Sea of Cortez blend. It's straight across from the famous arch and it is an amazing left. It has a reef and rock bottom with many tricky large and small rocks on the entry. This spot is for intermediate and expert surfers. Monuments is one of my favorite waves because

Paddling technique: how to balance on a surfboard while paddling. Find your proper positioning when you paddle the surfboard from a belly down position. Standing up on a surfboard: proper technique, take off, drop, riding stance, arm position, how to stop the surfboard in a controlled manner, how to dismount off your surfboard and how to fall off safely which is usually landing flat on the water (parallel to the water). Turning the surfboard: how to complete single and multiple turns on the face of the wave from a standing up position by using the rails of the surfboard. Learning the Bottom turn. Types of surf breaks: identify the types of surf breaks. Identifying ridable waves and positioning to catch a wave in the best possible spot and time: learn to read a wave, learn to identify the peak, learn where to position yourself. Some parts of the wave are the peak, the face, the lip, the bottom, the back, the close out, the foam or white wash, the tube or barrel, the line, the doggy door, etc. Waves can be measured in feet or meters and are usually measured from the back side. Sitting on a surfboard: how to turn the board from a sitting position in order to position yourself to catch a wave. Balance on your surfboard from a sitting position. Paddling out into the line-up: read the surf break, know where to paddle out into the lineup (past the breaking waves), practice techniques for getting through breaking waves like the turtle dive. Know where the entry channel is. Surfing etiquette: be able to identify who has priority, learn the priority system for riding waves, understand what to do when you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have priority,

Scorpion Bay - i t is considered an iconic wave of the Pacific. This wave breaks about 300 miles north of Cabo in the small fishing village of San Juanico, and its is said to be the second longest wave on earth. When a big swell arrives and the conditions are perfect, the waves break at four points and rides can last well over a minute. Small days are great for beginner surfers too.

learning how to keep yourself and others safe. Being a smart surfer: know your limits and be able to recognize conditions and/or surf breaks that are or are not suitable for your ability level.

Excellent surfer Juan "Paisa" Ramos, brother of awesome surfer Carlos Ramos, told me the following on behalf of both of them: "One of the most beautiful things about the Pacific Ocean is its fresh breeze, its perfect waves, its warm people and its warm life. I remember growing up in the Pacific coast and getting my food from fishing and my fruits from the orchard. One of my favorite things its the winter waves. I also love its white sand beaches and tubular waves. When we were kids, my brother Carlos won a couple national championships and I was considered one of the best as well. We opened a surf school in Cerritos called CRT about 8 years ago and I am a lifeguard in Cerritos too, having trained in Huntington Beach California. In the past 15 years we have represented Baja Sur in many national contests. One of the coolest things about the Pacific is that we have waves all year. And don't forget that the first surfboard that we had when we first arrived in Baja, which Carlos won his first state tournament and was a big part of our surf beginnings here, was given to us by you Alex, ha ha !" of her awesome surf experiences: "I've had many great surf experiences in the Pacific side, and for sure one of my best surfing sessions has been at San Pedrito. We camped there and before surfing, looking at the sky, stars, campfire, and listening to the waves was amazing. Being by the fire was great and then I woke up with the sunrise, I saw the sun come out which was amazing and the sky was pink, orange and yellow colors, and I got up with the sun and then caught some very fun waves. They were maybe 3-5 foot. I surfed all day, and I saw a lot of people and friends as well. And that was a great experience. Another great experience was at La Curva. I was also camping and after surfing I climbed up the mountain that's beside the beach, and the sun was setting and the moon was coming up. So, in front of me looking at the ocean the sun is setting, and behind me a huge full moon was coming out from the mountains, super bright! I thought: wow! And then, as I start to look out into the ocean, I see whales starting to breach. It was a mother whale and her calf. She was teaching her baby how to breach. I felt very moved by everything that I was seeing. Nature and its beauty. It was a very magical moment and there were beautiful flowers around me. I am very grateful for that experience. Lastly, I had another super fun experience at Cerritos. The waves were about 7 feet and I was catching lots of waves, feeling all the adrenaline, super happy, super stoked. I caught some good ones! I love surfing the Pacific, it has a different energy, the waves are a bit more powerful, and it's also great that when you surf the Pacific this time of year you get to see the whales and dolphins, and sometimes you can even hear the whales. If you go underwater you'll hear them sing, it's truly beautiful! I love it."

whales have traveled here for many years, but they haven’t always had an amicable relationship with humans. In the past, gray whales, like many other whale species, were hunted for their blubber, bones, and meat. These whales would fiercely defend their young and lash out to fishers when hunted. This behavior earned them the nickname of “Devil Fish” by many locals. One fateful day in 1972, a group of fishermen lead by Don Pachico, a local fisherman with deep roots in the Laguna San Ignacio community, encountered a pod of whales. Don Pachico, against everything he was told while growing up by his fishing elders, reached out and touched the whale. The whale seemed to enjoy the encounter and hung out next to their boat while Don Pachico pet it. Thanks to that fateful encounter, gray whales know to come to Laguna San Ignacio, because there, interaction with humans is not only safe but welcomed. Many visitors report whales seeking attention by coming up to the boats and even pushing their calves to the surface to show their young ones to humans.

The Laguna San Ignacio community has one of the best whale-watching management practices. They manage the number of boats and the amount of time they spend near the whales in order to prevent them from feeling stress. They also work with scientific researchers; help monitor the lagoon’s conservation and provide environmental education to their youth. However, none of this would’ve been possible if not for the strong partnership between residents and non-profits who helped establish critically needed area-protections. The International Community Foundation in partnership with the Laguna San Ignacio Conservation Alliance helped secure the permanent protection of over 340,000 acres of gray whale and adjacent habitat. Laguna San Ignacio is truly a very special place, a place where humans and whales continue to forge special bonds that will last a lifetime. and the Artist Plaza Frank Arnold welcomes thousands of visitors each year to the Historic Gallery District of San Jose del Cabo. Visitors to the gallery and working studio of the internationally celebrated abstract artist can stroll this sculpture garden across from Frank Arnold Gallery upon arrival to the district. The growing display of Arnold’s sculptures and the open space for special events begins with polished limestone walls and steps rising from the cobblestone avenue to an elevated plaza lined in bougainvillea and cut volcanic stone walls. Dramatic lighting compliments the sculptures and landscape as hundreds of visitors tour the space during the weekly art openings during the season. The center piece is a heroic scale bronze sculpture entitled Alma de Cabo, Soul of Cabo, created by Arnold as a tribute to the people of San Jose, following the recovery from Hurricane Odile which decimated much of the region in 2014. The Frank Arnold Gallery displays the original oil paintings and sculptures by Arnold. Visitors may tour the attached working studio with paintings in progress as well as his personal living space in the attached home. He divides his time between Cabo and his sculpture space in Mexico City. Arnold has exhibited his unique and expressive abstract-figurative style in multiple galleries and museums and is in numerous collections, worldwide. In addition to oil paintings and bronze sculpture, Arnold has produced two books, the first of which, “Frank Arnold Speaks” is a bilingual, English and Spanish biography covering his upbringing by adoptive parents, and the impact his experiences have on his artwork. His second book, “Your Creative Imagination Unlocked,” is a collaborative effort with noted depth psychologist, Dr. Jim Manganiello. It includes an exploration of his own creative process and several observations and hypotheses by Manganiello with regard to Arnold’s work as well as that of other noted abstract artists, Cy Twombly, Wassily Kandinsky, Pablo Picasso, Mark Rothko and Banksy. Los Cabos Half Marathon

The Los Cabos Half Marathon is a 21K race that starts and finishes at Plaza Mijares in Historical Downtown San José del Cabo, on February 9 at 7am. Symphonic Rock Evolution will be playing in La Paz, BCS on February 14 at Teatro de la Ciudad. A Night in Wonderland benefiting the Sarahuaro Foundation Following the success of their magic themed fundraising event in 2019, Montage Los Cabos, Eclectic Array, and All Access Cabo came together to create an enchanting Night in Wonderland overflowing with entertainment, dinner, dessert, live auction and raffle, benefiting the women and children of the Sarahuaro Foundation via Los Cabos Children’s Foundation. Alice, the Mad Hatter, the Queen of Hearts and other fantasy characters posed for photos and delighted attendees with skits, juggling, and more at Montage Los Cabos on Saturday, January 4. The event raised an astonishing $80,000 USD for the Sarahuaro Foundation and will surely make a huge difference in the lives of the women and children the Foundation serves. Some of the larger auction items included a Northern Dream Yacht excursion on a Superfish 130 foot fishing boat with 27 fishing rods, sea doos, kayaks, paddle pools, jacuzzi, and more (valued at $10,000 USD); a 3-night, 4-day stay at Montage Los Cabos including dinner and spa (valued at $4,000 USD); and a Twin Dolphin Golf package for 2 including dinner at Cocina del Mar at Esperanza for 4 people and a bottle of wine (valued at $2,400 USD). 2nd Annual Destino Los Cabos Holiday Fun Run benefiting Los Cabos Children’s Foundation Destino Los Cabos and Running Tours Los Cabos in partnership with Ciclovia Recreativa Cabo proudly presented our 2nd Annual Holiday Fun Run benefiting the children of Los Cabos Children's Foundation (LCCF) on Sunday, December 15. Runners were invited to run or walk in our fun and festive 3k, 5k or 8k route departing from Plaza Bonita in downtown Cabo. In lieu of an entry fee, participants were asked to bring an unwrapped toy or cash donation for LCCF. LCCF’s mission is to promote, fund, monitor and advance programs that have a focus on health for children in Baja California Sur. The event surpassed all expectations, tripling the number of participants from the previous year and raising almost $15,000 pesos for Los Cabos Children's Foundation, along with 2 appliance sized boxes packed full of toys that were distributed to families in need at the conclusion of the event. The first 200 participants received a commemorative santa hat and medal, while the first 3 runners in each category received additional prizes. One of the highlights of the day was the free bicycle raffle of 4 brand new bicycles with helmets for children participating in the race, plus 2 additional bikes for LCFF courtesy of The Cape, a Thompson Hotel.

Eclectic Array hosted their annual Santa Paws event benefiting local dog rescues on December 13 at their Cabo San Lucas store and December 14 at their San José store. People and well-behaved pets were invited to have their photos taken with Santa in exchange for donating pet food, toys, bedding, towels, cleaning supplies, etc. Eclectic Array sells beautifully handcrafted apparel, accessories, jewelry, dog collars and leashes, home decor and more, with a mission of “embracing artisans to create unique handmade products, connecting artisans with consumers and transforming lives across Mexico.” Well-loved store mascot Sparrow was in attendance to accept donations and mingle with guests and even posed for a few photos.
