CABO BELLO

The quaint village of Migriño stands as a thrilling haven for travelers seeking exciting experiences. Located at kilometer 97 north of Cabo San Lucas on the Baja California peninsula, Migriño offers a unique blend of natural beauty and adventure that invites visitors to step away from the hustle and bustle and embrace an action-packed escape. Whether you're an outdoor enthusiast or simply in need of a dynamic retreat, Migriño provides a perfect getaway with its rich landscape and diverse activities.

Migriño is one of the northernmost communities in the southern municipality of Los Cabos. Situated along the highway from San Lucas to Todos Santos, its inhabitants have dedicated themselves to agriculture for decades. The community, part of the ejido named after the "Migriño" stream, thrives around various nearby ranches. Despite its rich history, many residents of the region are unaware of Migriño or overlook its location on the La Paz-Cabo San Lucas route, often in haste to reach the more prominent ports. However, the modern four-lane highway has increased the speed of travel, and today's tourists, drawn by the area's attractions, contribute to a growing number of visitors. The tourism boom has led to the development of new services and modern constructions, enhancing Migriño's appeal and accessibility. Most residents of Migriño live in modest yet

comfortable homes built in the traditional southern Baja Californian countryside style. The community is well-connected, with most families owning vehicles to travel for groceries and other necessities. The community also features a church, a civic plaza, a sports court, and a children's playground, providing

essential amenities and fostering a close-knit, vibrant community life.

The beach area at "Boca del Migriño" is a prime spot for sport fishing. The expansive beachfront along the Pacific Ocean is accessible via the Migriño stream, though some areas require four-wheel-drive vehicles for entry. Horseback and camel riding along the beaches and nearby areas is a popular attraction, drawing both national and international tourists, with foreigners making up the majority.

During the winter, whale watching becomes a highlight as these majestic creatures migrate along the Baja California Sur coast. Although not as close as sightings from a boat, they can often be seen from the shore. Fishing tournaments, particularly for sierra, are held on the beach as schools of fish often come close enough to the shore for successful catches using lures and fishing rods.

Migriño is an adventurer's paradise, with a range of activities designed to connect visitors with the stunning landscape. The most popular activity is ATV tours, provided by various local outfitters. These tours take you on thrilling rides through the scenic surroundings, offering an exhilarating way to explore the area. For a more relaxed adventure, horseback riding through the cactus-lined arroyos provides a unique perspective of the region's natural beauty. These rides allow you to discover hidden spots that will leave lasting memories.

DIVING DEEP

with Alex Schmidt

Alex Schmidt's underwater adventure began at a tender age. "I started diving when I was 13 years old," Alex recalls. His father, who worked at a hotel in Riviera Maya, helped a dive shop establish their diving experience. Grateful for his assistance, the shop extended an open invitation for diving adventures. Despite his initial reluctance, Alex's father urged him to seize the opportunity. "I didn't want to go underwater. What is all this gear?" Alex laughs, reminiscing about his first dive. "But once I did, I couldn't stop. That first dive, when I was 14 in Cozumel, changed everything for me."

The Underwater World: A Realm of Peace and Majesty

When asked about the allure of diving, Alex's eyes light up. "The extended time underwater lets you truly appreciate the beauty of marine life," he explains. Whether it's a fish curiously observing you for minutes or the majestic sight of an eagle ray or a nurse shark, the underwater world offers a peaceful escape. "Underwater, you don't have traffic, phones, or city noise. It's just the bubbles and the sounds of the ocean. It's a direct ticket to mindfulness."

From Enthusiast to Content Creator

Alex's journey into underwater videography was serendipitous. "I never intended to become a professional underwater videographer. I was just obsessed with the ocean," he shares. Armed with a GoPro, Alex began recording his dives and sharing the footage with friends and family. The response was overwhelmingly positive. "When I started sharing my encounters with sharks, people took notice. Some of my posts went viral, and people began asking to join me on dives." This recognition highlighted the power of social media in bringing the ocean's beauty to those far removed from it. "It was a way of changing the world, one post at a time."

Inspiring Through Visual Storytelling

Alex's breathtaking videos, featuring manta rays and other marine wonders, inspire even those who fear the water. In a way, his content brings the ocean closer to those who live far away from it. He hopes that his content motivates others to appreciate and protect the ocean. "We aim to showcase the ocean responsibly. Ecotourism can overwhelm marine life, so it's essential to go with certified operators and have responsible encounters."

Promoting Ethical Encounters and Ecotourism

The rapid growth of tourism in Baja presents both opportunities and challenges. Alex emphasizes the importance of responsible tourism. "Many captains and guides in Baja were once shark or artisanal fishermen. Transitioning to ecotourism offers better pay and easier work, which is wonderful. However, we must ensure this transition doesn't harm marine life." He points out that while guides and captains aim to provide exceptional experiences, nature ultimately dictates the encounters. "It's crucial not to disturb marine life too much. We must avoid overwhelming ecotourism to prevent negative impacts."

Alex Schmidt Marquez's passion for the ocean is evident in every dive and every video he shares. His journey from a reluctant teenager to a celebrated underwater videographer is inspiring. Through his lens, Alex brings the ocean's wonders to life, advocating for responsible and ethical interactions with marine life. As we continue to explore Baja's beauty, let Alex's story remind us of the importance of preserving and protecting our natural world.

Follow Alex @alex_sharks to dive deeper into his underwater adventures and be inspired by the majestic beauty of Baja's marine life.

Is Los Cabos

Pet Friendly?

Yes, Los Cabos is a fantastic destination for both humans and their pets. However, enjoying public spaces with your dog comes with responsibilities. Whether you're strolling along the shoreline or exploring the town, it's essential to uphold pet etiquette to ensure a pleasant experience for everyone. While Los Cabos doesn't have city-wide leash laws, some specific locations enforce leash requirements for pets. Areas such as the marina and certain beaches may mandate leashes for dogs. Some areas may be designated as off-leash zones, but it's generally expected that dogs are kept on a leash when in public spaces. This rule helps prevent conflicts with other animals and ensures the safety of both pets and people.

When navigating public spaces with your pet, it's essential to be considerate of other people and animals. Keep your dog under control at all times and prevent them from approaching strangers or other pets without permission. Not everyone may feel comfortable around animals, so respect their space and be mindful of any signs of discomfort or fear. Training your dog is not just about teaching them tricks; it's a vital aspect of responsible pet ownership with numerous benefits. Proper training strengthens the bond between you and your pet, fostering mutual respect and understanding.

Los Cabos is home to a diverse array of wildlife, including stray dogs and cats. While it can be tempting to let your pet interact with these animals, it's best to avoid such encounters to prevent conflicts or the spread of disease. Keep a close eye on your pet and discourage them from approaching or chasing wildlife. Los Cabos has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, and many of them are pet-friendly. However, be sure to check local regulations regarding pets on the beach and follow any guidelines provided. Keep your dog on a leash unless you're in a designated off-leash area, and always clean up after them to keep the beach clean.

By following these guidelines for pet etiquette, you can ensure a positive experience for both you and your pet while exploring public spaces in Los Cabos. Responsible pet ownership not only fosters harmony within the community but also helps preserve the natural beauty of this stunning destination for future generations to enjoy. So leash up, clean up, and respect the environment and those around you as you embark on adventures with your pet in Los Cabos.

1. Where can I take my kids for a fun day out while enjoying some relaxation time myself?

One of my FAVE spots is Suelo Sur in San Jose when I have kids visiting (and when I don’t!).

They have a tree fort, climbing boulders and lots of room for kids to be kids, while Mom and Dad can enjoy fabulous cocktails, craft beers and a smokehouse bbq. I love this open-air space where you can see the kids play while you relax. They’re also pet-friendly and the owners are amazing!

Check them out at @suelosurbaja

2. Are the streets stroller-friendly and what transportation options are available with kids?

Know before you go! Not all of our streets are stroller friendly. If you have a smaller stroller or a “baby backpack” this will be easier to navigate. Most ubers and taxi’s will not offer car seats, so you may be more comfortable with a private car service. Our restaurants are quite kid-friendly, most will have highchairs and booster seats.

3. How can I make my vacation more rewarding by helping local children?

There are numerous child-based charity groups in Los Cabos, and most will very happily accept school supplies and your children’s outgrown clothes. If you have room in your suitcase, you can make an impact. Many groups that deliver food and clothing to children in need will also be glad for your family to join them in handing out donations.

4. What are some less crowded beach options suitable for families?

Medano beach is a popular choice for tourists, as it’s bustling and busy with vendors and beach bars. If your little ones prefer to be away from that much stimulation, I love heading about 40 mins from Cabo San Lucas to Cerritos Beach. This family (and dog!) friendly beach is chill and laid back, swimmable with low-key restaurant and bar options. If you’re coming with teens or tweens, they also have a few surf schools for those with a lust for adventure!

5. Are there any specific items I should bring with me that might be hard to find locally?

We’re not in Kansas anymore! You are visiting a different country, and while we have many “Americanized” shops and grocery stores, you may not be able to find your favorites from home. Things like certain snacks, sunscreens and formula may be different than what you are used to. If you can’t live without it, bring it! We also have a lot of mentions on our Facebook page, regarding the cost of airport dining, so I always recommend bringing your own little snacks and sandwiches with you, to the airport. Many hotels will happily prepare you a little lunchbox to go!

ummer is here, and when things get hot, the perfect meal in Los Cabos is certain to include delectable dishes prepared with the freshest fish and seafood you can imagine. Some of the more traditional dishes are the battered fish and shrimp tacos, which, according to all true Choyeros, must be made with flour tortillas. If you don’t know what a Choyero is, make sure to look up our Foodie issue for the meaning of the term. But back to the traditional Baja-style tacos: they are always served with shredded cabbage, a very light mayo, a nice squeeze of lime, and your favorite hot salsas. Guacamole is optional and, if you talk to a purist of regional food from the southern tip of the Baja, not a very traditional addition. However, during summer, most locals prefer the cold versions of fish and seafood dishes. Welcome to the world of ceviche, sashimi, and other delicacies from the sea.

We won’t embark on the stories around the origin of ceviche here; we will simply talk about the way ceviche is prepared in this area. Ceviche has been prepared in the area for many generations. Some versions are made with finely chopped fish. The dish tends to be drier in terms of the juice and sauce than in other coastal areas of Mexico. Perhaps this is a result of the desert that surrounds the area and the tendency of all cultures to reflect the environment in their regional cuisine.

Traditionally, ceviche is made with cubed or diced freshly caught fish. Locals prefer to finely dice the fish, and some of the favorite fishes for ceviche are sierra, a locally caught mackerel, and more recently, kampachi, also known as greater amberjack. The diced fish is then mixed with finely chopped purple onion, seeded Roma tomatoes, plenty of freshly squeezed lime juice, finely chopped serrano peppers, and a few chopped pickled jalapeños with the pickling juice. The last thing that is added is finely chopped fresh cilantro. Usually, ceviche is served with tostadas and a variety of hot salsas to top the tostadas to your liking. Nowadays, it is common to find ceviche preparations that include seasonal fruits like mango and passion fruit, and sometimes you will

even find dragon fruit, or pitaya as the locals call it, in the more gourmet versions of the traditional Baja-style ceviche.

According to Jesús Montaño, a true Choyero and the organizer of the popular Sashimi Fest, it was in the 1970s that the local community learned about sashimi when international fishermen came to Los Cabos to enjoy the extraordinary sport fishing of the area. The traditional sashimi was quickly transformed to please the locals’ palate through the addition of lime, purple onion, and a variety of sauces that usually include soy sauce and olive or sesame oil. Chef Diego Moles of Raw Baja mentioned that in the last decade, tuna has become the most popular sashimi and, in his opinion, while the local preparations are delicious, it is always a good idea to try fresh tuna on its own because it is a truly memorable experience.

One of the most delicious gifts from the sea is the chocolata clam, large clams that are called chocolata for their brown shells that resemble the color of chocolate milk. Whether you have them baked or raw, they are delicious. The fresh Queen of Clams is usually served on the half shell topped with lime juice and other sauces. If you happen to stop at Raw Baja, make sure you have their version topped with kampachi and a spicy and citrus sauce that will make your taste buds happy.

And while summer is all about enjoying great seafood by the sea, it is also important to be a good citizen of the planet and make sure to consume only ethically caught fish and seafood. Remember that species that are reserved for sport fishing, like marlin and dorado, also known as mahimahi, are not supposed to be offered on menus, so please do your part and abstain from ordering them. However, if you were fortunate to catch some nice fish on a fishing adventure, then make sure to visit one of the many restaurants that will cook your fish to perfection and enjoy the bounty that the waters surrounding the southernmost tip of Baja have to offer.

The gentle hum of Cabo and the ocean breeze resonate deeply with her, creating a sense of home.

Joni’s love affair with Mexico began in Mazatlán, where she visited for years before her friends moved to Los Cabos. Her visits to Cabo sparked a love that led her to relocate at the age of 39. Despite a challenging first year, she never looked back, confident in her abilities and her real estate license, which she obtained at 18.

Her passion for the medical spa industry found fertile ground in Cabo, an environment where she could thrive and explore new opportunities. In 2018, she seized the opportunity to buy Mail Boxes Cabo, a decision that added another dimension to her career.

Building Connections Through Mail Boxes Cabo

Mail Boxes Cabo has become an essential service in the area, connecting expats and tourists with the conveniences they miss from home. The company also offers moving services to and from the States, even handling larger items like cars and ATVs. With a USPS Mail permit, Mail Boxes Cabo ensures that staying connected is hassle-free, a necessity in the lives of many in Cabo.

Joni enjoys boating and people-watching, greeting everyone with a cheerful “Buenos días!” It’s clear that Cabo is where she was always meant to be.

REIMAGINING TRAVEL:

Sustainable Adventures at Rancho San Dionisio

Airplanes filled with tourists have always been a sign of prosperity in this town. We grew up bilingual, and although we prefer pesos, we carry dollars in our wallet. If someone asks me about the best beaches or the main attractions and activities in Los Cabos, I could plan a whole itinerary on the spot. These tell-tale signs that I grew up in a touristic place tell you everything you need to know about locals. We love this land and we love sharing it.

It feels as though I’ve grown up with Cabo San Lucas. From the early beginnings, when I was a child, it was a small town. When I was a teenager, it was spring break heaven. As an adult, the immensity of it all both excites and overwhelms me. Witnessing the evolution of tourism in this town has made me wonder: How did it all begin? Perhaps more importantly, where is it going?

It is known that initially, it was a luxury for the wealthy. Tourism dates back to ancient civilizations like Egypt, Greece, and Rome,

where travel served leisure, religious, and cultural purposes. Railways and airplanes made it more accessible. Anyone could travel. Somehow, along the way, we started welcoming millions of travelers, with over 3.8 million visitors in 2023, according to the Tourism Board. It's safe to say tourism is massive in Los Cabos.

Growing up where people choose to vacation has made me a picky traveler. I can spot a sales pitch, a tourist trap, and an overpriced drink with my eyes closed, and I will always prefer straying off the beaten path. I’ve learned that my favorite way to travel is by seeking experiences that will teach me something, connecting with the locals, and making sure I leave no trace I was ever there, keeping the memories I’ve made on trips in pages in my journal. Learning to treat other destinations the way I’d like my hometown to be treated sparked my curiosity about alternative tourism. That is how I came across Rancho San Dionisio.

I love a good road trip and am lucky to have a group of friends, Andrea, Arturo, Daniela and Victor, who is an incredibly talented photographer, that share my love for adventure. I contacted Isabel C. Salinas, the owner of

the ranch, to ask for information and book a camping spot for the weekend. She was incredibly friendly and welcoming, which motivated us even more. The trip promised an incredible experience, and as millennials glued to computers during the week, we were eager to disconnect and immerse ourselves in nature. We packed our bags with clothes, knowing the ranch would have tents and camping gear set up for us upon arrival, a service Isabel offers for a very reasonable price. However, you can bring your own!

On a Saturday afternoon, we set out to the San Dionisio Canyon, located approximately

Photos by Victor Ruiz
Special thanks to: Rancho San Dionisio

57.3 kilometers from San José del Cabo, within the Municipality of Los Cabos. An hour and a half later, we found ourselves enjoying a preparada (a delicious drink made with beer, tomato juice, lime, Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, hot sauce, rimmed with chili powder and salt) on the scenic overlook of Santiago. This pit stop, which I highly recommend, marked the beginning of the adventure. The drive, although bumpy, was beautiful. We had to stop several times for Victor to capture the light hitting the canyon. He couldn’t help himself.

Arriving at San Dionisio Ranch filled us with immediate tranquility. It felt like we were onto something special right from the start. As the sun began to set, Isabel welcomed us warmly and gave us a tour. She showed us the communal kitchen where guests cook, the orchard, firepit, jacuzzi, and our tents set up under a beautiful tree on the greenest grass. Her commitment to sustainability is evident in every aspect of its operations. Solar panels provide clean energy, waste is meticulously managed, and water conservation practices are strictly followed. The ranch even has a Starlink antenna, making our rural stay surprisingly comfy. Plus, the ecofriendly bathrooms were a highlight!

We decided not to pack food, so we opted for their dinner service, which included handmade flour tortillas, beef stew, and refried beans. Doña Margarita Manriquez and her daughter, Mayra from a nearby ranch, treated us to a delicious home-cooked meal that we thoroughly enjoyed. After dinner, we gathered around the fire pit, sang some songs, and called it a night. As I drifted off to sleep, listening to the sounds of the canyon—cicadas chirping, cattle

lowing, and leaves rustling in the tree above—I experienced one of those moments in life when one feels very small in the universe. It was a feeling both grounding and intimidating. As my eyes closed, I dreamt of frogs.

The next morning, we woke up to the sunrise, enjoyed fresh handmade cookies, a cup of coffee, and then set out on a hike led by Isabel. Our backpacks carried only bathing suits and water. At Rancho San Dionisio, the activities are designed to have minimal impact on the environment and are conducted with a strong emphasis on environmental education and conservation. The best time to visit San Dionisio Canyon is from October to March, when the rivers flow from the Sierra de la Laguna, creating wells ideal for swimming. We hiked for about an hour before a break and a dip was needed.

The water was incredibly fresh, and we were surrounded by the gentle hum of nature. Every inch of this canyon is so alive and unbothered by humans. We dried off by lying on rocks, listening. For a moment, we became part of the scenery.

As our stomachs began to rumble, we made our way back to Doña Margarita Manriquez's ranch, where she greeted us with a hearty homecooked breakfast. The meal included eggs with machaca, savory dried meat, and delicious handmade flour tortillas. An important aspect of alternative tourism is fostering meaningful interactions between travelers and the local community. We sat at Doña Margarita’s kitchen table, listening to the stories of her ancestors and about all the traditional sweets

they make depending on the season. Everything is handmade. She shared mango jam with us, which we enjoyed with a bit of cheese. A profound sense of gratitude washed over me. Being welcomed into someone’s home like this is a privilege not to be taken for granted.

The tour continued with Isabel leading us to various ranches that warmly welcome travelers with camping spots and traditional food. The more we explored, the more I sensed that this was just a sneak peek, a preview of everything San Dionisio Canyon had to offer. I couldn't wait to return. Along the way, the people we met shared fragments of the community's story. It will take more visits, more time, and more reflection to piece them together like a

puzzle and share them with the world. This desire for more feels like a confirmation that we traveled with intention. The journey to Rancho San Dionisio was more than just an adventure; it was a transformative experience, a testament to the beauty of sustainable tourism and the richness of connecting with local communities. From the landscapes of the canyon to the warm hospitality of Isabel, Doña Margarita, and Mayra, every moment reminded us of the importance of traveling responsibly and respectfully. As we departed, we carried not only memories of stunning scenery and delicious homemade meals but also a renewed commitment to preserving and celebrating destinations like San Dionisio Canyon and its people.

THE JOURNEY OF PAPILLON YACHTS:

An Interview with Owner Carlos Franco

FOUNDING INSPIRATION

Carlos Franco's journey with Papillon Yachts began in Cabo, where his experience in the timeshare business inspired him to create memorable experiences for others. A pivotal moment came during a morning stroll through the marina, where he spent hours conceptualizing a yacht rental venture that would combine luxury, adventure, and the sea's beauty.

EARLY CHALLENGES

Launching Papillon Yachts came with significant challenges. Securing initial capital to purchase the first yacht required Franco to risk his personal savings and take out loans. Building a reputation in a competitive market was another hurdle. By focusing on exceptional service and personalized experiences, Franco gradually built a loyal customer base through word of mouth.

BUSINESS EVOLUTION

Key milestones in Papillon Yachts' growth include expanding the fleet with larger, more luxurious yachts and introducing specialized services such as weddings, bachelorette parties, and corporate events. These diversifications helped establish the company as a premier yacht charter service in Cabo San Lucas.

FAMILY INVOLVEMENT

Franco's family plays a crucial role in the business. His spouse manages administrative and financial aspects, his eldest oversees marketing and customer relations, and his younger children assist with operations and guest services. This collective effort has been instrumental in the company’s success.

UNIQUE OFFERINGS AND SUSTAINABILITY

Papillon Yachts distinguishes itself with unique offerings like personalized event planning, gourmet dining by private chefs, and specialized excursions such as whale watching. The company practices sustainability by reducing single-use plastics, using eco-friendly cleaning products, and participating in local marine conservation projects.

PERSONAL REFLECTION

For Franco, the most rewarding aspect of running Papillon Yachts is witnessing clients' joy and satisfaction. Creating unforgettable experiences and working with family to grow the business has been a deeply gratifying journey.

DESERT, ART & CULTURE:

HOW THE LANDSCAPE INSPIRES CREATIVITY

In the realm of artistic and cultural inspiration, few landscapes evoke as much fascination and creativity as the desert. Baja California Sur, with its rugged terrain and stark beauty, stands as a prime example of how the arid wilderness can ignite the imagination and become a canvas for artistic expression.

Many mistakenly perceive deserts as barren and lifeless, mere expanses of monotone sand and rock. However, the desert of Baja California Sur defies such simplistic categorization. It is a place where life thrives against the odds, where resilient flora bursts into vibrant greens and yellows with just a hint of moisture, transforming the landscape into a fleeting oasis. This resilience, this ability to bloom with the slightest touch of water, mirrors the creative spirit that the desert instills in artists and visionaries alike.

ANCIENT ECHOES

The desert of Baja California Sur stands not only as a source of inspiration but also as a canvas where human creativity has left its ancient marks. Along the peninsula, cave paintings dating back thousands of years adorn rocky cliffs and sheltered alcoves, offering a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of indigenous peoples.

These artworks, often depicting scenes of hunting, wildlife, and spiritual rituals, reflect a deep connection to the land and its resources. The desert's expansive horizons and tranquil isolation provided a natural backdrop for these early artists to express their worldview and cultural narratives, using natural pigments to etch enduring stories.

These cave paintings serve as poignant reminders of the desert's role not only as an artistic muse but also as a sacred space where human creativity and spiritual reverence have intertwined throughout millennia.

CINEMATIC AND CULINARY ADVENTURES

A beautiful example of how the desert inspires creativity and innovation across disciplines is "La Baja Inspira," which emerged as a distinctive section of the Los Cabos International Film Festival in 2021. Dedicated to celebrating films deeply connected to the unique landscapes and narratives of Baja California Sur, this initiative spotlights works that draw inspiration from the region, encouraging filmmakers to explore it.

Later, in 2023, La Baja Inspira Itinerante was launched—a film showcase that travels across the Baja California Peninsula, offering free screenings in public spaces and schools, further fostering appreciation and inspiration from the region's cinematic storytelling.

Similarly, the culinary scene in Los Cabos is deeply inspired by the surrounding desert, with chefs reviving ancient cooking techniques such as pit roasting and sun drying to honor the region's history and introduce these methods to a broader audience.

This blend of traditional methods with the unique flavors of desert ingredients and fresh seafood from the nearby coasts creates a distinctive fusion cuisine that celebrates the best of both worlds.

This rich culinary tradition is showcased at events like Sabor a Cabo Rural, which took place on March 3 at Huerta Mijanui in La Candelaria, a place steeped in myth and legend. Sabor a Cabo Rural emphasizes

the essence of Baja California Sur’s rural cuisine. Through such events, the desert’s influence on Los Cabos' cuisine continues to inspire, blending ancient practices with innovative flavors to tell the story of the land and its people.

ART, FASHION, AND COLLABORATION

The art scene isn’t far behind. ABC Art Baja is an influential art festival that has captured the attention of the art world, shining a spotlight on the diverse artistic scene in Baja California Sur. Established to promote art and culture across different locations in the region, ABC Art Baja has quickly become a cornerstone event, celebrating the local artistic community and fostering cultural collaborations.

The festival was conceived with the vision of uniting gallerists, artists, collectors, designers, musicians, local spaces, and the general public, creating a cohesive and supportive network that strengthens the concept of community. The art world has its eyes on Baja California Sur, recognizing the region's unique blend of traditional and contemporary art forms, inspired by its stunning landscapes and rich cultural heritage.

In the fashion world, Anette Boersma, founder of the local bathing suit brand Nëche Designs, found inspiration in the desert landscape of Baja California Sur. Her designs, infused with the essence of the region, speak eloquently of its colors, textures, and moods. Through her work, Boersma captures the essence of the desert's transformation, translating its natural beauty into wearable art that resonates with locals as well as visitors.

Collaborations between creative forces in Baja California Sur further highlight the desert's role as a muse. For instance, the synergy between Cabo Models, El Perdido Hotel, and photographer Frank Tesisteco for the cover of this edition exemplify how the surreal scenery of the region sparks innovative collaborations. It showcases the raw beauty of the desert but also reinterprets it through a lens that blends fashion, hospitality, and photography into one.

A CALL TO CREATIVITY

Baja California Sur's surrealistic landscapes are increasingly becoming a wellspring of inspiration, setting trends beyond the realm of traditional beach culture. The region offers experiences that extend far beyond its renowned coastlines. From the rugged canyons to the cactus-studded plains, each view tells a story of resilience and adaptation, echoing through art, fashion, and cultural endeavors. As artists and creatives continue to discover its hidden depths, the region promises to reveal even more facets of its enchanting spirit, inviting all who venture into its embrace to see beyond the surface and delve into the desert.

This exciting trend is changing how we build homes and communities by focusing on health, sustainability, and deep connections with nature. As more people seek healthier living environments, Baja California Sur shines as the ideal spot for this innovative movement.

Homes are built with sustainable, non-toxic materials to ensure a safe and clean living space. Advanced ventilation systems and air-filtering plants improve indoor air quality, while large windows and open spaces let in lots of natural light, helping to lift moods and enhance productivity.

Outdoor areas are designed to encourage physical activity and relaxation. Walking trails, fitness centers, and yoga pavilions are integrated into the community layout, making it easy for residents to stay active and engaged with their surroundings.

The focus goes beyond reducing environmental impact to actively restoring and enhancing local ecosystems. Solar panels and other renewable energy sources are used to reduce reliance on non-renewable resources and minimize carbon footprints. Innovative water conservation systems, like rainwater harvesting and greywater recycling, ensure that water is used efficiently and sustainably. Landscaping with native plants and sustainable gardening practices supports biodiversity and soil health.

Building strong, connected communities is another key part of wellness real estate. Shared spaces like gardens, co-working areas, and community centers provide plenty of opportunities for residents to connect, collaborate, and support each other.

Los Cabos is the perfect setting for wellness real estate. Its breathtaking natural landscapes offer an ideal backdrop for a healthy and sustainable lifestyle. The region’s mild climate and abundant sunshine encourage outdoor activities year-round, enhancing the overall wellbeing of residents.

Answers Your Design Questions

Which Home Fragrances Are Perfect for Summer?

Home fragrances are an important part of any home. From choosing the right unscented cleaning products to keeping your favorite fragrances around you, this article will help you smell through the best scented solutions for your home.

The sense of smell is one of our strongest, so while you have taken time to design your home to be aesthetically pleasing, be mindful of the smells you invite into it. Popular cleaners with artificial smells of lavender, lemon, or pine linger thickly in the humid summer air and can make your beautiful home smell like a public toilet or restaurant floor.

For second homes that stay enclosed for long periods of time, it is vital that unscented cleaning products are used. Chemicals can lay on the floor, rugs, and fabric during the heat and humidity of summer. I am often horrified to smell these strong, toxic scents when walking through multimillion dollar properties.

Choosing the right scented candles, room diffusers, and sprays, like the ones we have at House of Barrie, is the solution to keep your home smelling clean and naturally fresh. Home fragrances that have natural oils and essences come from plants and promote a sense of well-being when smelled. They contain herbs and scented plant oils that create calm, soothing feelings and promote wellness.

There are three types of scented products you should keep around your home and regularly use, especially during Cabo summers when doors and windows stay closed for months and only fans and AC circulate the air.

Scented candles come in a wide array of decorative glass or ceramic holders. Those made of soy will burn cleanest, while a soy-paraffin blend is still common. When lighting a candle, it should burn for a minimum of two hours the first time to prevent funneling (when the wick forms a cylindrical tunnel and self-extinguishes). Candles that contain multiple wicks act like multiple candles as they burn through the scent and disperse double, triple, or quadruple the scent of a single wick. It is important that when you have a large room, you use a multiplewicked candle as they propel the scent around a larger area.

Reed diffusers keep scented oils in a small glass or ceramic vessel with wooden reeds sat in scented oil. The scented oil stays on the reeds and constantly diffuses the scent into the room. It's important to turn the reeds once every week or so, as the tips will dry out in the air and the more moist they are, the more fragrant the area around them will be. Favorite places to place your diffuser are by the front door, so there will be a constant scent as you and your guests enter. Toilets and bathrooms love having your favorite scents around, and smaller rooms such as closets and hallways will benefit from a lingering natural scent.

Room sprays provide instant smell gratification anywhere you spray them. Hold up high while spraying to let the droplets fall and scent the air. They are great for an instant freshening prior to having guests, keeping in the bathroom, and spraying hallways and closets. In preparation for the long, hot Cabo summer, the most important part of the season is our attitude. If we say it's going to be slow, then we convince ourselves that it will be slow.

CABO GOLF: BEYOND THE GREENS

Savoring the Full Experience of Los Cabos Golf Scene

As summertime in Cabo sets in, the temperature rises, and the days get longer, which means more time to get out and enjoy all the Cabo golf scene has to offer.

You may, of course, be familiar with the incredible courses and the great golf to be enjoyed in Los Cabos. But what you might not be aware of is the incredible array of additional attractions that Cabo Golf brings to the table.

Widely known are the challenging tracks that run from the Pacific to the Sea of Cortez through San Lucas and San Jose, as well as their incredible views and scenery. But Cabo Golf is so much more than just 18 holes—from incredible food and drink, unique merchandise in great pro shops, memorable resort amenities, and other special touches, the golfing experience in Los Cabos is truly on a level all its own.

A great meal before or after a round of golf is common almost everywhere. But Los Cabos takes the golf course culinary experience to another level entirely. Many courses here are known for their incredible comfort stations, where unique dishes are available for every player who passes through, and an extensive range of snacks and drinks is on offer for each golfer.

You’re at Querencia, and you get to enjoy the taco bar or the incredible halfway house. At Twin Dolphin, you’ll be overwhelmed by the variety of snacks to choose from behind their Red Doors. The relaxed atmosphere at Chileno Bay’s comfort station flat out compels you to linger just a little longer before moving on to the next tee. And out at Diamante, it’s their incredible flatbreads or Italian sausages that grab your attention as you make your way around the course.

Another key attraction for any golfer fortunate enough to tee it up in Los Cabos is the incredible pro shops at every course in our region. Every golfer knows there’s no status symbol quite as cool as showing off the great places where you’re a member or that you have visited—and our Cabo courses truly step it up when it comes to merch. Every shop here offers some of the best brands in golf apparel today, and they all do a spectacular job creating unique merchandise featuring their cool logos as well as custom Cabo imagery or patterns. Nothing says “Cabo Golf Scene'' quite like rocking a bespoke hat or shirt from your favorite course. Or, even better, take it a step further and sport the WWT Championship logo!

But beyond the food and the apparel, it’s really the atmosphere and the vibe that make golf in Los Cabos so special. Maybe it’s our privileged location, where you can see the ocean from pretty much everywhere, or maybe it’s the incredible facilities and locker rooms where you can relax pre- or post-round, or maybe it’s just the incredible people that work so hard to make the golf experience so special. Whatever it is, you can’t deny that nothing beats a great day on the golf course here.

Cabo Golf: it’s so much more than just 18 holes. Thanks to all there is to enjoy surrounding your round, it shouldn’t make much difference whether you post your best score ever or if you didn’t even break 100 in order to have a great day.

So, with summer officially upon us, take advantage of all that extra time and those longer days to squeeze out as much enjoyment as you can from the incredible Cabo golf scene.

Joe Mazzeo, Senior Vice President of Golf & Events for Wasserman and Tournament Director for the WWT Championship, emphasizes the significance of these events in putting Cabo Golf on the map. The upcoming WWT Championship is scheduled for November 4-10, 2024, at the Tiger Woodsdesigned El Cardonal course at Diamante Cabo San Lucas. As golf enthusiasts anticipate these world-class events, the Cabo region continues to shine as a toptier golf destination, offering a blend of natural beauty, competitive excitement, and social allure.
