LOS CABOS 101
LOS CABOS & South Baja
Los Cabos (the capes) is located in the southernmost tip of the State of Baja California Sur and consists of four main areas: Cabo San Lucas, San José del Cabo, Todos Santos and the East Cape. In between you will find smaller towns and points of interest such as Santiago and Miraflores, located inland at the skirts of the Sierra de la Laguna, or Migriño and Pescadero which are located on the Pacific side, in between Cabo San Lucas and Todos Santos THE AQUARIUM OF THE WORLD. These are the words that Jacques Cousteau used to describe the Sea of Cortez. It is said that eons ago, back when the Earth and Continents were still taking their shape, the edge of Mexico split from the mainland to form the Gulf of California and the Baja Peninsula. This allowed the Pacific Ocean to rush into the gap and create the Sea of Cortez, or as some call it, Mother Nature’s own fish trap. Hundreds of varieties of fish and mammals found their way into this “trap” and either stayed in its warm shallow waters or ventured down into the cool bottom of the two mile-deep San Andreas Fault. For millenniums, the Colorado River has been dragging its rich minerals and nutrients into the Sea of Cortez, aiding the living species to thrive in these waters. In the months of January through March, Gray whales make their yearly migration from Alaska to give birth to their young in the shallow and warm waters of the Sea of Cortez.
THE BAJA SUR LOOP Take a look at the Baja Sur map below; you can see that the highways and towns form a loop. Ongoing road improvements and new highway constructions are making road trips quicker and easier every year. The new highway from Cabo San Lucas to Todos Santos is impressively well done, making it only a 45 minute drive. Cabo San Lucas Also just known as “Cabo,” is a tourist friendly town located on the tip of the Baja California peninsula that’s full of entertainment for every age and liking. The Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean meet at Land’s End, where you can observe the beautiful rock formations and the famous Cabo arch. Cabo San Lucas has the liveliest beach in the Los Cabos area, an impressive marina and countless restaurants and bars that keep the town alive day and night. The Corridor The corridor is the 40 km highway that connects Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo (about a 25 minute drive). Along this road you can find various hotels, luxury ocean front homes, championship golf courses and beautiful views. Have your camera ready and make a roadside stop at the Costa Azul view-point for photo opportunities or at the Cabo Real arroyo for a refreshing coco frío (cold coconut). San José del Cabo Walking around downtown San José will allow you to experience a traditional Mexican town. You will find yourself surrounded by colorful buildings and quaint cobblestone streets that lead to the town’s picturesque zócalo (main plaza). Over the years, San José has become an artistic and cultural centre with numerous fine art galleries in its downtown art district. From November through June, the popular Art Walk takes place every Thursday evening where galleries welcome
guests to sip some wine while they view their exhibits; however, the galleries are open year-round. San José del Cabo’s historical downtown also offers world-class restaurants from Mexican gourmet cuisine to authentic Thai food. San José has a beautiful beach where you can take a horseback ride and explore the estuary that is home to many different bird species. East Cape People often call it “the old Cabo” because of its pristine beaches and small fishing towns such as Buena Vista and Los Barriles. The East Cape begins just east of San José and extends about 100 miles up the Sea of Cortez coast. Sixty miles outside of San José is the Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park, an eight fingered coral reef that offers outstanding snorkelling and scuba diving and turtle nesting on the beach. Very popular for fishing and surfing, the East Cape also attracts kite surfers, campers and folks who just want to get away from it all. Todos Santos Located on the Pacific Ocean side of the peninsula, Todos Santos is an oasis where artists and surfers flock to enjoy the culture and excellent surf. Home to the famous Hotel California, this charming town offers great restaurants and a cooler climate than Cabo San Lucas and San José due to the Pacific’s breezes. La Paz La Paz is the capital of the state of Baja California Sur and is known for its warm people and beautiful beaches. This authentic Mexican city (as well as the general south Baja region) has been rated as one of the safest in Mexico and still maintains the small town feel that is very welcoming for tourists. La Paz is a departure point for tours and charters to the stunning Espiritu Santo Island as well as whale watching excursions. Stroll down the colorful malecón (boardwalk), walk hundreds of feet in waist high water at Balandra beach or have a fine dining experience; La Paz has a lot to offer. *

FISHING REPORT All that’s fishy from Lands End to La Paz by Gary Graham
Seasonal Fishing Chart:
BOATING & FISHING
With calm waters, extraordinary fishing and perfect weather, some may argue that boating is the most popular attraction in Los Cabos. Whether you want to take a cruise to Santa María Bay on a luxury yacht or wake up at the crack of dawn for a fishing adventure, there are endless options to fit your needs. BOAT RENTALS Private yachts and sailboats There are several charter companies that can accommodate your needs. What you do on your trip is really up to you, but it will typically consist of a tour of the landmark arch, a few hours of fishing, and a cruise to one of our beautiful bays for a swim. Most boats have fishing equipment and a knowledgeable crew, but the biggest difference between a yacht and a fishing boat rental is the cost. Fishing Boat Rentals You can always fish on a yacht, but cruisers and pangas and super-pangas are a more affordable option. Cruisers accommodate larger groups and are more comfortable when the sea is rough on a windy day. THE MARINAS Marina Cabo San Lucas, the area’s largest commercial marina, features 380 slips and accommodates vessels of up to 375 feet. Amenities include 24-hour security, electricity and potable water, a fuel dock, and convenient laundry and shower facilities. Puerto Los Cabos, located in La Playita, just north of San José del Cabo is the newest marina 4
Sport fishing flags commonly seen in Los Cabos:
in the area with 200 available slips for boats up to 400 feet. Amenities are similar to Marina Cabo San Lucas, though the boatyard’s 150-ton travel lift can accommodate larger vessels. FISHING There’s a reason why the world’s richest fishing tournament - the Bisbee’s Black & Blue - has taken place in Los Cabos for over thirty years. This part of the world offers abundant sea life and an exceptionally high catch success rate, no matter what your level of fishing experience is. What to Expect Most charters include a fishing li-
cense, bait, tackle and equipment. Some also include food and drink or these amenities can be added at an additional cost. It is better to leave early, and trips usually begin at 6:00 and 7:00 am and last around 6 hours. Cost will depend on the number of people in your party and the size of the boat you choose to rent. It is customary to leave the crew a gratuity of 15% to 20%. Bait and Tackle Most likely, the boat you charter will include your bait and tackle. If you need your own fresh bait, you may buy it along the Cabo San Lucas Marina or the crew you hire may also stop to buy it from the local fishermen on your way out.
As Semana Santa fades and Cinco de Mayo looms, the Cabo version of "Where's Waldo?" finally comes to an end. The striped marlin that took an unappreciated powder for the winter have returned; they aren't exactly chewing the paint off the bottom of the boats, but they are here in good numbers. This is good news for the fleets and their captains and crews from Cabo to East Cape. Settling into the spring season, the back-to-back Spring Break weeks were a reminder that Baja sport fishing is a family affair, as recent reports reflect. Priceless memories are being created that will be etched forever in families’ histories by moms and dads eager to share their passion for sports fishing. Spring is the ideal time to be on the water. There is plenty to catch and even the marlin are probably bigger than most of the kids who are catching them. Inshore -- that means the shore is clearly in sight -- bottom fish abound; triggerfish, cabrilla, grouper and amberjack lurk, ready to bend rods. On the surface, there might be a colorful sierra mackerel or a roosterfish with its distinctive dorsal fin. At San Jose, the inshore roosterfish, jack crevalle and an occasional wahoo have been dominating the catch. Plus, there are plenty of skipjack and bonito to pull on -- great for family fun. Farther up into the Sea of Cortez at East Cape, the striped marlin, along with some thresher sharks -- their unusual tails as long as their bodies -- are the top catches. Both La Paz and Los Arenas have begun their spring with their patented, over-the-top mixed bag. Long-time anglers, first-timers and families were treated to a variety of species -- dorado, roosterfish, barred pargo, yellow and dogtooth snapper, jack crevalle, cabrilla, skipjack, bonito, ladyfish and pompano. Nothing huge to speak of, but what an assortment! *

SNORKELLING & SCUBA DIVING
Prepare yourself for an incredible show of nature as you swim side by side with colourful schools of fish, eels, rays, octopus, sea turtles and more. The Sea of Cortez or the “Aquarium of the World” offers many opportunities to experience incredible underwater wildlife.
SCUBA DIVING DESTINATIONS Note: travel time is from the Cabo San Lucas marina. Land’s End Intermediate-Advanced - 50’-60’ Five minutes by boat and you can share the water with sea lions and moray eels, with a sunken boat visible in the Falls. Sand Falls Beginners - Advanced - 30’-100’ Steep sand banks drop sharply into a canyon filled with tropical fish. The canyon runs from the depths of the Cabo San Lucas bay to within 30 feet of the beach. Pelican Rock Beginners - 25’-80’ This large rock attracts many tropical fish and is only five minutes from shore. Neptune’s Finger Advanced - 80’-100’ A spectacular canyon wall dive. Cabeza de Ballena Beginners - 20’-40’ A 25-minute boat ride leads to a dive through large boulders with many fish. Santa María Cave Beginners - 20’-40’ Reachable from the shore or a 35-minute boat ride, the entrance to Santa Maria canyon has a huge variety of fish which feed right from your hand. Chileno Beginners - 30’-70’ This location offers parking, sea turtle sightings, tropical fish, and night dives over a sandy and rocky bottom following a 35-minute boat ride. El Gavilán Intermediate/Advanced - 70’-100’ This rocky ledge leads into a canyon where groupers and larger fish are often sighted; 35 minutes by boat. Blow Hole Beginners/Advanced - 30’-70’ 35-minutes from San Lucas, or just 10 minutes from Chileno beach, this dive
offers rocky valleys presenting a variety of fish. Las Salinas Beginners - 30’-45’ - A sunken Japanese fishing boat attracts a large assortment of fish at this beginners’ dive; about 80 minutes from Cabo San Lucas or one hour from La Playita. Gordo Banks Advanced - 110’-120’ - A seamount provides views of marlin, hammerheads, skip jacks and at times huge manta rays; one hour from La Playita. Cabo Pulmo Beginner-Advanced - 30’-100’ A one hour drive east of San José or five minutes by boat and you’ll find the only living coral reef in the Sea of Cortez. SNORKELLING SPOTS Cabo offers several methods for snorkelling. You may drive to a local beach and swim out, book a tour with one of the many popular companies, or charter a private boat. Tours are typically two or three hours. Stay away from the Pacific side of the peninsula; its strong currents make it very dangerous for any kind of water sports. Pelican Rock
A quick five-minute ride from the Cabo San Lucas marina or Medano Beach is all it takes to get to this fish-attracting rock.
Lover’s Beach This popular and uniquely-named beach is accessible only by boat. Be on the look-out, however, as the water is not roped off for swimmers. Santa Maria Bay Snorkel tours regularly visit Santa Maria Bay. If you choose to drive there, it’s an easy swim from the shore to the reef on the right side of the cove. Chileno Bay Snorkelers will find a safe, roped-off area for swimming at this common tour destination. Cabo Pulmo A Natural Marine Reserve in the East Cape, and may offer the best snorkelling in the area. This eightfingered coral reef is about a 2-hour drive from San José del Cabo, but it is well worth it!

March through May This is the windy season. Swells are consistent and you’ll run into fewer crowds.

FLYBOARDING
Have you ever had a dream about flying like Superman or maybe swimming like a dolphin? Dreams can come true in Cabo! The FlyBoard is a device connected and powered by a personal watercraft, which allows propulsion underwater and in the air. Users are connected to the board by wakeboard boots, under which, water pressure provides thrust. A certified trainer controls the power and height and you control all the movement. Available at Medano beach or in the Puerto Los Cabos Marina in San José del Cabo.
KITE SURFING
This sport is most popular in the East Cape due to the El Norte winds. Playa Norte (the north-east side of the beach) in Los Barriles is said to be the most popular destination and is also the location for a professional kite-boarding school. La Ventana is also a popular spot and is closer to La Paz. There is less wind in Los Barriles than La Ventana, but the surf is bigger. The best months are January, February, March, October, November, December.
STAND UP PADDLING
There is something special about paddling out and finding yourself floating in the ocean with just a paddle and a board. Stand up paddling is a great way to see marine life and to get a great workout and while enjoying nature. At Medano beach you can rent boards in several locations. Certain companies offer paddling lessons and some have yoga classes on the board. Tips! • Your feet should be parallel, about hip-width distance apart, centred between the board rails (edges). • Keep toes pointed forward, knees bent and your back straight. Balance with your hips and core. Keep your arms straight and twist from your torso as you paddle, you have more strength in the abdominal muscles than in your arms. Your gaze should be level at the horizon and avoid staring at your feet. • If you’re paddling on the right, your right hand is lower and on the paddle shaft. Your top left hand is on the top of the grip. The elbow (angle) of the paddle faces away from you. • Plant the paddle by pushing the blade all the way under the surface, pull it back to your ankle, then out of the water. To go in a reasonably straight line, paddle about 4 or 5 strokes on one side, then switch to the other. When you switch sides, you’ll reverse hand positions. • When you fall aim yourself to the side so you don’t fall the board.
SKATEBOARDING
Visit the Pescadero Skate Park located on km. 64 of HWY 19, in the town of El Pescadero. The park is surrounded by lush gardens, and the cost to enter this pro-park is $2.00 USD.

ACTIVITIES FOR FAMILIES
Los Cabos is an ideal destination for families with children of all ages. Ask your concierge to help you book any of these activities. Blown Glass Factory Don’t miss this factory located in Cabo San Lucas where youngsters can watch the highly-skilled artisans perform the art of glass-blowing. Adults can shop for that one (or probably more than one) perfect piece to take home. Make sure you visit the factory before 2:00 pm in order to catch the show. Adventure Parks There are several adventure parks and eco-adventure companies in Los Cabos where you and your kids can experience zip-lining, back-country ATV tours, a camel safari, and more. Zip-lines are appropriate for kids of 8 years and up and be prepared
to hike from 5 to 15 minutes from line to line. Most companies include transportation. Ask your concierge to set-up your adventure. Swim with Dolphins Los Cabos has a few facilities where you and your kids can swim with trained dolphins. By visiting one of the dolphin centres you and your kids will experience a one-on-one connection that will be memorable. You will learn special hand signals and ways to communicate positive reinforcement to the dolphins. Wet Fun Water Park Located about 20 minutes from San José, this water park has shallow pools and small slides for young children, water mushrooms, a pirate ship and a giant bucket that dumps
water on the bystanders bellow. For the adrenaline seekers, several fast and large slides stand tall and mighty and offer a great view of the beautiful surrounding mountains. To get there take HWY 1 north from the San José International Airport towards La Paz and East Cape. After about 15 miles, the exit for Caudaño and the water park will be at km 66. Follow this road for a few minutes and you will find the park on your right. Turtle Release Every year, several species of endangered sea turtles nest in the warm sands of Los Cabos. Your family will have the opportunity to help these fragile and tiny creatures
make it safely into the sea. Children will learn about the importance of conservation and they will surely enjoy the experience of helping these little friends. Horse-back lessons at Cuadra San Francisco This world class equestrian centre was established in 1994 by Francisco J. Barrena M. and is home to about 50 horses. Each one has been trained by professionals to ensure safety and an enjoyable ride. The riding school’s speciality is high level dressage, which is an excellent way to perfect any riding discipline. The staff can accommodate riders of any age and skill level. Cuadra San Francisco is located at km. 19.5 of the main highway between Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo.
ADVENTURE
Los Cabos offers a number of entertainment options for adventure seekers. From guided bicycle tours to a sunset horseback ride on the beach or a highspeed zipline across one of the many local canyons, pick an adventure that is right for you and get out there!

Buggy, Atv, Or Bike Rentals There are several local companies which offer ATVs, buggies, and other off-road vehicles for trail and beach cruising. Strap on some goggles and hop behind the wheel of one of these off-road racers for an afternoon of fast-paced fun! Vehicles include typical ATVs or enclosed rail buggies or RZR ATVs. Tours are typically three hours, and drivers must be 16 years of age with a valid drivers’ license. If pedal-powered rides are more your speed, look into renting a mountain bike, beach cruiser, or joining a guided bicycle tour of town. Just make sure to wear a helmet! Horseback Rides, Nature Walks, and Bird Watching Los Cabos (particularly San José del Cabo) offers a number of horseback excursions for all ages. Saddle up for a sunset guided beach ride, venture up a hidden canyon trail, or just sit back in the shade while experienced horse trainers give the kids lessons in horsemanship – there’s something
for everyone! San José also boasts a natural estuary and nature preserve. Enjoy a peaceful, self-guided nature walk to observe some of the lushest landscape in the area. Species of flora and fauna are abundant: dozens of species of cactus, lizards, and birds can be spotted on this solitary walk, just a few minutes from downtown. Cactuslovers may also want to check out the nearby cactus gardens Wirikuta, offering a large variety of cacti laid out in an artful outdoor setting. Parasailing, Bungee Jumping, and Ziplines Get ready to shout “Geronimo!” as you leap off a platform in one of the most extreme outings! Several local adventure-parks provide bungee jumping packages and high speed zipline canopy tours are offered in a number of local canyons. If heights over land are not right for you, try a parasailing trip and gain some altitude to enjoy beautiful views of Cabo while tethered firmly to a speedboat!

LOS CABOS 101
USEFUL INFORMATION Exchange rates - Dollars are accepted almost everywhere and you will get your change in pesos. The exchange rate varies every day, but some places have a set rate.
Cash or Card? - Visa, Mastercard and American Express credit cards are generally accepted, but you often run into cash only places. Always ask beforehand and carry cash. Your bank will most likely charge you international transaction fees if you pay with your card.
ATMs - The easiest way to get pesos is to simply withdraw money from an ATM in Los Cabos. Bank ATMs give the daily exchange rate (best possible rate) with reasonable fees. Examples include Banorte, Bancomer, Santander, Banamex, and HSBC. Non-bank ATMs located in the street will charge higher fees. Some ATMs only give you dollars, some only pesos and some give you the option to withdraw both. Pay close attention to what currency you’re withdrawing and try to get as much cash as possible in one transaction to avoid paying high fees. Buying groceries - In Cabo San Lucas, Wal-Mart and Costco are good options and easy to get to. You can always find a taxi outside of these stores. San José has a Wal-Mart and Mega. If you just need to grab something quickly, OXXO stores are small, reasonably priced convenient stores located all over town.
Driving - Renting a car will allow you to enjoy the freedom of exploring Los Cabos. Driving in Mexico might be intimidating, but if you just go with the muddled flow, you will realize that there is some organization within the chaos. If you are pulled over by local police for committing a driving infraction, the standard procedure is for them to take your Driver’s License. You will then have to go to the Police Station to pay your ticket and pick-up your license. There are two types of gasoline: Magna, which is regular, and Premium. Lleno (pronounced ye-no) means full. Major credit cards are accepted. Tipping the gas station attendant around $10.00 pesos is customary. ALTO STOP

LOS CABOS 101
Imagine floating in a turquoise bay with pink sand or riding some epic waves: every Baja beach offers something unique. Here is a list of the must-see beaches -- visit them all to decide which one is your dream beach!
Cabo San Lucas
Along the Corridor
If you’re looking for the action, here it is. El Médano (as the locals call it) is a 2-mile stretch of hotels, restaurants and bars, right on the sand. It’s a swimmable and family-friendly beach with endless options for souvenir shopping. Numerous activities and water sports are available. If you want to take a water taxi to Lover’s Beach, this is the best spot to do it. Its stunning view of Land’s End and the vast entertainment options make this beach a must-see.
LAS VIUDAS
José, follow the sign which reads “Santa María” and exit the highway at Km. 13. Follow the dirt road until you reach the parking area. Santa Maria provides no services and hardly any shade. You can rent umbrellas on the beach, but if you happen to have one, bring it anyway. Snorkelling gear will help you get the most of this beautiful beach!
Location:
San Jose del Cabo
MEDANO BEACH
Las Viudas (The Widows) beach is not visible from the road and is possibly the most private beach you will find on this list. What makes it unique are the rock formations which create small pools and coves where you can have a private and peaceful beach day. This beach is swimmable with caution but if you find your own pool you can avoid the waves. Turn right at Km. 12.5 of the corridor and follow the dirt road down to the beach. There is a sign that reads “Las Viudas” but slow down and keep your eyes peeled; the entrance may sneak up on you. You won’t find any services or vendors so bring all your beach essentials with you.
Tips:
CHILENO
Chileno is a very popular location for snorkelling, swimming or just spending the day under the newly-installed palapas. You’ll find tide pools at the east end of the beach and beautiful reefs offering excellent snorkelling and scuba diving. This is the only beach with public restrooms and it has plenty of palapas for shade. Going from Cabo San Lucas towards San José, follow the signs for Chileno Beach Club near Km. 14 of the main highway. If you visit Chileno on a weekend, make an effort to arrive early; snorkelling visibility is often better in the mornings, you’ll avoid the mid-day snorkel tours and, if you beat the crowds, you’ll be guaranteed a palapa to yourself for much-needed shade. Bring snorkelling gear!
Tips:
PALMILLA
Palmilla beach is known for its family-friendly calm waters and a mile-long stretch of beach. Located within the resort community of Palmilla, you will find yourself surrounded by oceanfront luxury homes, the One&Only Hotel and the world renowned Jack Nicklaus Ocean Nine golf course. Pangas and fishing cruisers are available for charter, but you won’t find water sport rentals such as kayaks or jet skis.
Location: Location:
In the heart of downtown Cabo San Lucas. This is accessible by foot through the east side of the marina or via Avenida del Pescador.
Tips:
Be prepared to be approached by souvenir vendors. If you’re not there for the shopping, just respond with “No, gracias.” Prices don’t vary much from one water sports rental place to another. Visit Lover’s Beach while you’re there.
LOVER’S BEACH
Getting there is an adventure in itself, due to the fact that it is reachable only by boat or kayak. The easiest way is to take a water taxi from the Cabo San Lucas Marina or Medano Beach. Prices are around $15.00 USD per person. Ask your captain to cruise by the arch and the sea lion rock for some great photo opportunities. Once you arrive, you’ll notice the striking rock formations and caves. Walk to the other side of the rocks and you’ll find yourself looking at the Pacific Ocean; the locals call this Divorce Beach. This side is very dangerous for swimming because of the powerful undertow, so swim on Lover’s Beach only. Land’s End beside the famous arch. This beach is accessible only by boat. There are a couple of vendors who offer beer and water, but you won’t find any other services. A good idea is to spend the day at Medano Beach and take an hour or two to go to Lover’s Beach; this should be time enough to explore this natural wonderland.

Tips:
SANTA MARIA
Santa Maria offers a stunning horseshoe cove with coralcoloured sand and abundant marine life. Boat excursions and private charters often stop here to enjoy the snorkelling and scuba diving that this National Marine Preserve offers. This family-friendly beach is relatively secluded; therefore, you rarely run into beach vendors. Travelling west from Cabo San Lucas towards San

Location: Take the Palmilla ramp exit at Km. 27. Follow
the signs and turn into the main beach parking area before the entrance to the One&Only Hotel. Palmilla is popular among local families on the weekends, so arrive early if you want a palapa, or bring your own umbrella. No services are available here.
Tips:
COSTA AZUL
If what you’re looking for is a good surf spot you can find it here without driving out of town. Head over to Zipper’s for a surf session and lunch and beers at the restaurant. To the west of Zippers is Acapulquito beach where the Cabo Surf Hotel and Mike Doyle Surf School are located. You can find surf shops in the area where you can rent surf and stand-up paddle boards and set up lessons. The surf is bigger during the summer, and in the winter this is a good spot for snorkelling and swimming. Exit at Km. 28 via the Costa Azul Bridge. Swimming with caution is possible in this area but keep an eye out for surfers.

LOS CABOS 101 LA PLAYITA
La Playita (the little beach) is a long stretch of beach where you will often find locals fishing from the shore and families with children enjoying the beach-front playground. On the right end of La Playita you can find a roped-off swimming area just outside the entrance to the beautiful Puerto Los Cabos 500-slip marina. To the left is the natural open beach where you can swim, skim-board and enjoy a peaceful beach day away from the crowds. Follow the signs to La Playita/ Puerto Los Cabos from Boulevard Mijares in downtown San José del Cabo (across from the fire department). You will find new and well-maintained bathrooms, palapas and fishing charters. There are no food services directly on the beach, but several casual restaurants dot the surrounding area.
Location: Tips:
On the Pacific CERRITOS
Cerritos beach is a popular surf spot and swimming here is relatively safe. The scenic 45-minute drive from Cabo San Lucas is well worth the trip as you drive along the pristine Pacific coast. The Cerritos Beach Club Restaurant is a perfect spot to spend a relaxing day on the beach or, if you want to be active, you can take a surf lesson at Baja Surf Camp or rent surf and boogie boards at the Costa Azul Surf Shop.
Location: This bay lies about 30 minutes
from the boardwalk in La Paz. Simply follow the main drag along the boardwalk, then through Costa Baja Golf Course and continue to wind around the coast and through the mountains until you see the signs for the beach. No bathroom facilities. There is a truck where you can buy water and snacks, but it is recommended to bring your own in case they are closed. There are palapas, but not many. Kayaks and snorkel gear are offered.
Tips:
Loreto
ISLA CORONADO
A wildlife reserve where visitors may anchor, snorkel, scuba and camp lies on this island. The panga ride usually includes a cruise around the island where it’s very common to see sea lions, seals and even sea otters. The only swimmable beach on the island has pristine white sand and shallow crystal clear turquoise water, which creates ideal snorkelling conditions. Coronado Island is the ideal place for an adventure or to simply immerse yourself in nature and relax.
Location: Tips:
Location:
Exit at Km. 66 of the Cabo San Lucas to Todos Santos Highway. Watch the markers and look for the signs. Drive about 1.7 miles to the beach area. Tips: Lounge chairs, restrooms, food and drinks are available at The Cerritos Beach Club Restaurant.
About 7 miles or 30 minutes northeast of Loreto by boat. To get to Coronado Island you must take a boat or a panga. You will find pangas in Loreto’s Marina which you can hire. The best option is to ask your concierge to arrange this for you. There are no services or restaurants on the beach, but there are several large palapas with tables and benches and an eco-restroom. Bring hiking shoes if you plan to explore the area. Snorkelling gear is a plus!
La Paz
BALANDRA
Balandra is a stunning bay that will take your breath away. You can walk back and forth in the bay in waist-high, crystal clear water with shades of turquoise blue. Follow the shore towards the north-east side and you will find the famous “mushroom rock” as well as other interesting rock formations. Pictures just don’t do it justice. You won’t regret visiting Playa Balandra!

HAPPENING NOW
By Fernando Rodriguez
LOS CABOS is an energetic place. San José del Cabo buzzes with culture and tradition, while Cabo San Lucas alerts your senses with bright lights and sounds of a good time coming from every direction. Events such as fishing tournaments, festivals, triathlons, conventions, charity galas, trendy parties and concerts take place in Cabo year-round. Here are this month's events! May 1 - Labor Day Mexico’s Constitution of 1917 led to significant social reforms to repressive national labour laws. A Labour Day parade was held in Mexico as early as 1913, but the holiday was first officially commemorated as a national day of rest on May 1, 1923. Every first day of May has been a federally recognized holiday since. Schools, banks, and government offices, along with many businesses are closed on this date. May 2 - Los Cabos 7K Open Water Race A 4.3 mile race will wind its way from the 6:30 and 7:30 am starting line at La Playita along the Sea of Cortez coastline to the finish at Palmilla Beach. Race categories will range with age groups from a 14 -19 years,, 20 - 29, 30 - 39, 40 49, 50 - 59, 60 - 69, and 70 years of age and up. The older age group will compete along with some women in a shorter, separate 2,000 meter race. Race day entry costs range from $200 pesos ($16 USD) to $800 pesos ($65 USD). The aquatic competition is a tune-up race for local athletes training for the upcoming La Paz and Cabo San Lucas Triathlon events. May 2 - Cleaning of Medano Beach Cabo Villas invites locals and 12
visitors alike to help keep Medano Beach in its beautiful state by volunteering to join the Los Cabos Spring Cleaning event at 7 a.m. in front of the Baja Cantina Restaurant and Beach Bar. Volunteers are given garbage bags and protective latex gloves to go out in small groups for this annual spring clean-up effort to maintain the natural beauty and cleanliness of Medano Beach. Volunteers are asked to bring bottled water for this eco-friendly endeavour.
May 2 - Floyd Mayweather vs Manny Paquaio Championship Boxing One of the most anticipated fights in professional boxing history will take place on Saturday, May 2, at the MGM Grand Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, and will be available at a select few drinking and dining establishments in Cabo San Lucas. A few of the most packed bars showcasing the event
will be Cabo Cantina and Cabo Blue, along with nearby Tanga Tanga. Along the Golden Zone at Puerto Paraiso Mall, the Mango Deck Cantina will host the biggest boxing match-up in recent history. Another nice dining and drinking venue to witness one of the biggest boxing fights of all time will be Desperados in the heart of downtown San Lucas, where delicious appetizers and BBQ ribs will be served.
May 4 - NBA Conference Finals The NBA Basketball Conference Finals begin on Monday, May 4 and can be viewed at the best sports bars in Cabo, which include Cabo Blue, Baja Cantina, Solomon’s Landing, the Cabo Lounge, Cabo Cantina, Mando Cantina on the Marina, Desperados and Tanga Tanga, next door to the Wyndham-Tesoro Hotel. May 5 - Cinco de Mayo Cinco de Mayo celebrations in Los Cabos are limited to special events that are hyped-up and promoted at most hotels and bars which recognize American and Canadian expectations of seeing the holiday observed in sunny Baja California Sur Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Republic of Mexico defeating the French army in the battle at Puebla in 1862. On April 30, 2014, Mexico celebrates "El Dia del Niño" or "Day of the Child," as a national holiday along with its national Labour Day (Dia de el Trabajo) on May 1. More fuss is made in Los Cabos and throughout Mexico concerning these two earlier holidays than Cinco de Mayo. The battle at Puebla in 1862 was one of David versus Goliath proportions, as 4,500 poorly equipped Mexicans defeated Napoleon’s French army of 8,000 soldiers using guerrilla warfare tactics. An old Time magazine article states, "The victory came to symbolize unity and pride and helped establish a much-needed sense of national unity and patriotism." The date is a national holiday; banks and public government offices remain closed.
May 7 - Cabo 1000 For the first time in its history, the CABO 1000 offroad vehicle race will start on Thursday, May 7, beginning in Tijuana, Baja California and continuing south until it reaches the finish line in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. “BajaRacingNews.com has learned this event is a hybrid “Racing & Investing” event, meant for international finance movers and shakers. We’ve placed the planned race route and the planned racing and investing schedule,” noted Gary Newsome. “Economic and hospitality offerings in San Diego, Tijuana and Los Cabos, Mexico will be highlighted in the May 5 through May 12, 2015 CABO 1000 time matrix. Clearly, this is a rare “lifestyle” event for those who want to elevate their lives, fast!” added Newsome when discussing the CABO 1000 race, which attracts racers and spectators from all around the world. The CABO 1000 promises to be one of the biggest and best entertainment events in Mexico. A post-race party extravaganza is scheduled for the Golden Zone of the Puerto Paraiso Mall-side of the Marina, which promises to be one of the biggest motorsports celebration ever held in Mexico. May 10 - Mother's Day Mother’s Day is a national holiday in Mexico and is honoured and celebrated at many Cabo San Lucas resorts and restaurants. While it is always celebrated in the United States as the second Sunday of each May, Mexico officially recognizes the special occasion and federal holiday on May 10. Catholic churches in the Republic of Mexico hold special Mother’s Day masses across a country, where motherhood is passionately honoured throughout the entire nation. May 10 – 14 - NORRA Mexican 1000 The National Off-Road Racing Association, or NORRA, the organization responsible for the original Baja 1000, will present their 5th Annual Baja 1000, a race sponsored by General Tire Company that is being hyped as “The Happiest Race on Earth.” This year’s 2015 race is open to motorcycles, cars, trucks, and buggies, and will start in the northern Baja California city of Ensenada on Monday, May 10th, winding its way through the towns of El Rosario, Bahia de Los Angeles, San Ignacio, Loreto, and La Paz before fin-

Casey Kiernan leads the women’s field which also includes 4th-ranked Silvia Garavito, who is the most popular female of the sport. CULTURAL CIRCUIT, CABO SAN LUCAS MARINA - Saturdays from 12:00 pm to 11:00 pm
The Cultural Circuit, organized by Solomon's Landing Restaurant owner Brian Solomon, takes place every Saturday afternoon and ends in the evening. Booths featuring art exhibits, workshops, and music stages can be found arranged along the Marina behind the Tesoro/Wyndham Hotel. While a greater part of the Cultural Circuit showcases paintings and sculptures of local artists, the Circuit also offers free wine and tequila tastings, cultural workshops, live music, folkloric dancing and, of course, fine food at some of the city’s signature Marina dining spots. 14
This project was an interest of some entrepreneurs to promote the culture of Southern Baja and to return the Marina area to a family recreation area. After isolated efforts, these entrepreneurs; which include Brian Solomon, Adrian Luna and Clicerio Mercado, in an informal discussion revived the idea described above. These talks incorporated various individuals and institutions, Héctor Montaño, Director of API, Blanca Hernández Castro Professor of Department of Culture, the Professor Armida Castro Economic Development, Mr. Brian Solomon in representation of Canirac (Chamber of the Restaurant Industry) and Administration Plaza Marina, Lic. Diana Garza and Sr. José Luis Salinas, Manager of Hotel Wyndham. The aim of the Cultural Circuit is to give to the local community the opportunity to have a forum of culture in all its expressions, and provide a safe place that is symbolic of Family on our Cabo San Lucas Marina. The Cultural Circuit will also integrate the House of Culture (Cerrito del Timbre), Plaza Amelia Wilkes and La Marina. This event will take place every Saturday until the last week of July. It will shift to once a month for August and September. Resuming weekly in October. On the Marina, Artists will exhibit their works, there will be workshops for children, such as painting, sculpture, reading, etc., as well as culinary samples, wines and spirits to enjoy. There will also be participation of musical groups, Ballets Folk, Theatre Companies, Writers and Poets, etc. and it is all FREE. We want to present a special focus on local culture where tourists and the local community can experience the cultural heritage of the area and give a broader vision of roots, town customs, showing that our destination is represented by other attractions and not only bars, restaurants, golfing or fishing. The intention of this event is to improve and change each week. The artistic workshops have been of great interest for the audience especially by children,
these are Drawing, Painting, Sculpture and Carving food (Mukimono), musical scenarios have also been very successful with incredible talent in their presentations. Every visitor will enjoy every activity offered at the event and will take the unforgettable experience of knowing that Cabo San Lucas has more to offer and encourage the community to know the roots of their culture We are excited to be part of this event and share the passion that drives us. Bringing culture to the Marina and provide an avenue to improve and expand horizons, develop opportunities and show who Los Cabos is to the world. We reiterate the invitation to join us for this wonderful journey. SAN JOSÉ DEL CABO ORGANIC MARKET - 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. Art & Crafts, food and music. A bullring fiesta takes place every Wednesday and Saturday night at 4:00 pm at the bull ring location ds at the edge of town near the Walmart entrance/exit bridge. For anyone who has never seen a bull fight, this twice-weekly event is definitely worth the experience. Contrary to the deadly spectacle of bull fights in Spain and elsewhere in Mexico, these local bulls are not killed. The shows at the Cabo San Lucas Bull Ring are an absolutely colourful delight with displays of folklore, music and gallant Charros (horse dancing riders) which take centre-stage before and after the non-bloody bull fight performances. Tickets can be purchased on the premises prior to its 4:00 pm start for $20 U.S. at the ring’s ticket office. For more information, people are encouraged to contact (624) 143 4777. ART & CULTURE Iván Guaderrama INTERACTIVE ART By Yeye
Iván Guaderrama Interactive Art aims to make you become aware of your senses, and to expand your connection with the divine through the simplest form of molecular activity: energy. Through charming artwork – such as a bench on which you and your interacting partner create music by touching and kissing; or a paint that is heat sensitive, so that any change in temperature to the interactive art piece makes the color change – Ivan Guaderrama's new artistic project is one that uses technology and organic resources. Its exhibition at Luxury Avenue in Puerto Paraíso, Cabo San Lucas is an experience of friendship and inspiration. Iván first learned to use an airbrush while attending high school in New Mexico. He further developed his skills as a painter and sculptor while studying under such talents as Henry Paul Ally at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, where he later obtained his degree in plastic arts. In 2003, Guaderrama held his first individual exhibition, titled “Liquid Dreams,” at The Western Colorado Center for the Arts. Shortly after, he began using a technique he referred to as “Live Texture,” in which he would combine oil, acrylic paint, marble powder and resins to enhance the material character of his work. One year later, Guaderrama opened his first gallery, Criticas de Arte Galeria, in his home town of Chihuahua. In 2010, Guaderrama presented a new technique called “Glass Expression,” involving a fusion of resins, colors and effects on glass. This causes the work to come alive not only within the perception and variety of concepts, but within the unique and visually dynamic elements as well. This was the turning point in the artist´s technique; what Guaderrama has referred to as “electricity.” Since then, Guaderrama has participated in fifteen individual exhibitions and twelve group exhibitions within Mexico and abroad, and has opened two galleries in the beautiful San Jose Del Cabo Art District and breathtaking Laguna Beach, California. Know
Before You Go FISHING IN LOS CABOS by Tracy Ehrenberg
General Manager of Pisces Sportfishing
ishing is what made Los Cabos famous; long before the glamorous hotels, world class golf courses and luxury spas were even a thought, Cabo was a wellkept secret for the fishing savvy. Legends such as John Wayne, Bing Crosby and John Steinbeck frequented the Los Cabos area to sample the virgin waters that produced almost unbelievable catches. In fact, so impressed was Steinbeck with the beauty of the coast that he wrote a book “The Log From The Sea of Cortez,” a nonfiction work which details his six-week journey and describes the species encountered. There is something about the stark landscape and azure seas that captivate visitors, leaving an echo within them that beckons them back time after time. In the fishing world, Cabo ranks in the top five destinations on the planet, whilst standing firmly as the number one location in the world to catch striped marlin. Media attention is attracted every year by the world's top fishing tournament, The Bisbee Black and Blue, which last year had a record payout for first place of over four million dollars. This is not the only competition; the Los Cabos Billfish Tournament and Tuna Tournament are all held within three weeks of the main event. Many visitors to Los Cabos still
20
plan their trip around fishing and make it an annual event; however, now with Cabo prominently featured as one of the world’s top vacation destinations, more and more first-time fisherman are frequenting the area. In fact, many visitors do not even think about fishing until they actually arrive in Cabo. Then, intrigued by the scores of boats that they see passing their hotels in the early morning, they decide to look into what this is all about. What makes Los Cabos fishing different from other destinations that offer this activity is the extraordinary catch success rate, the proximity of the fishing grounds, and the wide selection of vessels. A stroll around the marina will give an idea, even to the uninitiated, that there has to be a reason the marina is jam-packed with boats ranging from simple day cruisers to multimillion dollar sport fisher yachts. The reason is the incredible fishing. When compared to other destinations, the odds of catching a large game fish are extremely high. Figures show that the boats catch fish in Los Cabos eighty to one hundred percent of the time. The number one fish in Cabo is striped marlin, which range in size from 100 to 180 lbs. and occasionally grow over the 200 lb. mark. They are present throughout the year with peak months in May, June, December and January. However in 2007, records show that even in the summer months the catch per boat ranged from one to ten fish in a single day. Blue and black marlin frequent the waters from July to mid-November, with sizes ranging from 150 to 800 lbs. It is interesting to note that most of the largest fish ever caught in Los Cabos -- those over 1000 lbs. -- were caught in months considered out of season for this species. So always be prepared! Sailfish are large in Los Cabos, usually from 70 to 160 lbs., and appear at the same time as blue and black marlin. Swordfish are also caught in our waters in lesser numbers, preferring the colder months of February and March. People

are always surprised to hear that we catch this species during the daytime, as in most other locations, fishing at night is necessary. The largest yellow fin tuna in the world are caught in the waters of Mexico, with fish caught on day trips ranging from 10 to 300 lbs. or more. Tuna move quickly from one location to another, so the bite tends to be less consistent. Smaller schooling fish usually move through our waters in April and then large fish are present from July throughout November. Dorado, also known as Dolphin Fish or Mahi Mahi, are numerous in Los Cabos. These exceptionally beautiful fish sport colours of yellow, bright gold and shimmering green-blue spots and range in size from 10 to 60 lbs. Considered a prime table fish, dorado are one of anglers' favourites both to fight and to eat. Wahoo are some of the fastest fish in the ocean, reaching speeds of over fifty miles per hour. These torpedo-shaped fish have sharp teeth and firm white meat which is normally cut into steaks. They are a real prize and range in size from 25 to 100 lbs. Not to be left out is the unusual roosterfish. This odd-looking fish boasts a comb or long, spiky fins on its back that could rival any rocker’s hair do. This species is almost always found close to shore and is easily identified as it raises its comb when about to attack its prey. Roosters range in size from 10 to over 100 lbs., and are not considering an eating fish. Apart from these species, which are the main target of most anglers, Los Cabos also boasts excellent fishing for red snapper, jack crevalle, amberjack, sierra, cabrilla and yellow tail, as well as those caught with less frequency such as recordsize snook, mako, blue and hammerhead sharks, as well as black sea bass. Whereas in other places it can take many hours of running time to get to where the fish are, in Los Cabos you could be hooked up to a marlin ten minutes after leaving the harbour. On a usual day trip, the farthest boats will travel is twenty-five miles and often fish are caught within a couple of miles of the shore. At other times, when searching for large yellow fin tuna boats will venture as far as forty miles offshore. Boats available for charter can be split into four groups. “Pangas,” which are open skiffs, usually 22 feet, have an outboard motor, no cabin or bathroom, but usually offer some type of shade. These are for a maximum of three anglers plus the guide. Pangas fish closer to shore and concentrate on smaller game, such as roosterfish, sierra and red snapper, which are seasonal. When marlin fishing is close, it is not unusual for pangas to hook up to these, as well as landing dorado. Trips aboard pangas are normally five hours, with an option of a morning or afternoon departure, and range in cost from $130 to $200, which includes tax and tackle. Fishing licenses will need to be purchased separately, as well as bait and beverages. Departure points for pangas are Cabo San Lucas, Palmilla
Beach and La Playita in San Jose. Cruisers are the most numerous fishing vessels in Los Cabos. These are the historic sport fishing vessels of the area, many having been in business for over twenty years with the same boats and crews, so experience is definitely high up on the list of what they have to offer. These boats range in size from 28 to 35 feet and have a cabin, bathroom, shade, fighting chair and fly bridge where the crew can spot fish. The 28 foot boats tend to have a single diesel engine and hold a maximum of four anglers plus two crew, whilst most vessels over 30 feet have two diesel engines. This makes them faster in getting to and from the fishing grounds. Nevertheless, many of the older Cabo fleets are upgrading to Turbo engines, meaning that even the 28 foot boats can rival the speed of slightly larger vessels. Boats 30 to 35 feet long usually take a maximum of six anglers plus two crew members. Cruisers range in cost from $300 to approximately $850 dollars per day, which is considered eight hours. It is important to check what is and is not included in the rate before making a decision as to what best suits your budget. Next are the mid-range vessels. These are from 35 to 42 feet long, and are usually newer boats with carpeted salons, a stateroom or two, a kitchen, air conditioning, as well as television, DVD and CD players, plus other extras such as GPS, fish finders, and other marine electronics. Costs range from $900 to $1700 per day for up to six anglers, though often a couple more people can be added for an extra charge.
Top-of-the-line vessels are in the 50 foot to 80 foot range. These are usually new, modern boats boasting every kind of luxury imaginable, from DirectTV that works whilst you are out fishing to a wet bar, onboard chefs and staff catering to your every whim. The range on these vessels varies greatly both in amenities and price, so if this is the ticket for you, a little research is in order ahead of time. Costs range from $2000 to $5000 per day, and the number of guests is usually six to twelve, depending on the vessel, with extra guests often allowed for an additional fee. If you have never tried fishing before, Cabo is about the best place to get started. The crews are very experienced and will show you exactly what to do. Whilst out on the ocean, there is plenty of time for relaxing, sunbathing, taking in the views from a different perspective, as well as seeing wildlife such as whale s, dolphins, seals, turtles and manta rays up close. The deciding factor in the health of Los Cabos fishing is a strong commitment by locals to release marlin and sailfish. Though you are allowed to keep one of these species per boat, anglers are strongly encouraged to release these fish, which are considered second-rate eating fish at best. More and more anglers are conscious of the fact that we need to take care of our oceans, and by doing this, a contribution is made that has long term effects. Try fishing in Cabo, you’ll be hooked.*

HEALTHY LIVING

Yoga by Bryan Kest “I am not trying to get anywhere, I am trying to make it OK to be where I am at.”
The body talks to us in the language of sensation! It says, “that feels good” and “that does not.” The reason for this is to keep us safe. Why would we not listen to what we are feeling? How far we go in a pose should be directly related to how it feels and whether we can breathe free, not holding the breath and straining. Remember there is no proof that looser people are healthier or happier people. So we are not trying to get loose, we are trying to get well or maintain wellness. That will not happen if we do not honour what we are feeling. This is not a sport. There is no proof that athletes are healthier or happier people. In my experience, health is a state of balance brought about by moderation among other things. Moderation is the opposite of being extreme. And happiness is a state of mental balance. Not craving and clinging, but accepting who we are and where we are at, instead of rejecting where we are at in a constant pursuit to get somewhere. Most people bring their craving and clinging mentality into the yoga class, and then the practice is polluted. In yoga class and maybe in life, let the practice be, “I am not trying to get anywhere, I am trying to make it OK to be where I am at” because I love myself and value my process! What I’ve learned is that my greatest yoga teacher is within! The knowledge I’ve acquired is a direct result of me quieting my mind and being open enough to receive the teachings coming through. The greatest job any yoga instructor can do is create the right environment for the practice of yoga (quieting the mind) and reinforcing the truths being exposed. Yoga practice is my opportunity to quiet my mind. Stepping away from the judgments and labels that separate me from myself and all things. Quieting my mind gives me the opportunity to tap into the universal depository of all knowledge and all things. This is not something I can control (yet) to the degree I can get any info I want. Yet, when my mind is quiet and open, it seems I fill up with understanding, knowledge and love. This understanding is not intellectual. I can’t explain the meaning of life or anything. I simply don’t have to explain it because I know it and trust it. I walk away from my practice feeling whole, complete, satisfied and full. I don’t believe any other person can give you that. They can only help you to create the environment, so as you yourself can tap into it. Nobody can do the work for you. I have to untie my own knots. I have to develop the strength to disempower my own habit patterns. Nobody can do this for me. And this is what the practice is all about. Quieting the mind means disempowering the habit patterns of thinking, judging, competing and attachment and being open to what I am feeling or knowing. In other words, “the teacher” waits patiently behind the busy mind. And when I quiet my mind (yoga practice) and experience where I am and what I am feeling, the wisdom starts coming through. Real knowledge of whom I am and what I need manifest as it is supposed to. And there the real yoga begins “living my truth.” Born in 1964, Bryan Kest has been practicing yoga since 1979, starting when he was 14 years old. He initially studied in Hawaii with David Williams, the first person to bring Ashtanga yoga to America. He then studied in India with K. Pattabhi Jois, the main proponent of Ashtanga yoga. “This was not such an easy and fashionable thing to do back then. Yoga seemed odd to most people. I was following my gut into new territory. So new, that when I found the ashtanga teacher, Jois, there was only one other student there practicing. All the better! I had him all to myself and could absorb as much info as I wanted. Now here I am, decades into this journey, still just a child (maybe a teenager) on this spiritual journey. Where do I find myself? What have I learned? THE TEACHER IS WITHIN.”

Organic “No todo lo rico engorda, ni todo lo que nos gusta nos hace daño”. “Not everything that tastes good makes you gain weight, not everything that we like is bad for us”. This is a classic recipe to enjoy for breakfast in Switzerland and Germany. The trick is to prepare it one day ahead, so the oatmeal gets hydrated. It is a great breakfast-on-the-go and you can keep it refrigerated for 5 days. Topping: Banana, strawberries, and any kind of dry fruit.
MUESLI Serves: 8 pax
Ingredients:
1 lt natural yogurt with no sugar 1/4 cup amaranth ½ cup oatmeal ½ cup green apple ½ cup pear 5 chopped dates with no pit 1/3 cup almond milk 4 tbs orange juice ½ cup toasted filleted almonds 4 tbs maple syrup 140 grs banana
Method: Serve the yogurt, oatmeal and amaranth in a bowl. In the same bowl grate the apple and the pear without peeling (you can use a cheese grater) take care to not let the seeds fall in. Add the dates, almond milk, orange juice. Refrigerate at least for 4 hours, or all night. The oatmeal will hydrate and it will absorb the liquid. If it gets to dry, add some almond mil before serving. Sprinkle with the almonds. The maple syrup is served on the side. SUSTAINABLE FISHING IN LOS CABOS
15 MINUTE CORE AND LOWER BODY BEACH WORKOUT
By Sabrina Lear
by www.fitbie.com
If this is your first time fishing in our waters, here’s a quick guide about how to be sustainable. Use circle hooks - Not only do they tend to out-perform J-hooks, they’re safer for the fish, and if set correctly, shouldn’t do major damage to those you intend to release. Many Los Cabos charter boats use circle hooks and will gladly instruct you on their use. The catch and release (C&R) ethic holds big sway in Cabo with many charter companies vying for top marks in annual C&R rankings for captains and crew. Long gone are the days of every fish hooked taken as a kill. Know Your Fish and Bag Limits - Anglers are permitted up to ten fish per day, with no more than five of any one species. You are allowed only two of wahoo, dorado and roosterfish, five tuna and one marlin per boat. The official regulation states, “In ocean waters and estuaries the limit is a total of ten fish per day, with no more than 5 catches of a single species, except of the species of Marlin, Sailfish, Swordfish and Shark, of which only one specimen of either is allowed, and which counts as five toward the overall 10 fish limit, or Dorado, Roosterfish, Shad, or Tarpon, of which only two of each species are allowed, which count as five toward the overall 10 fish limit.” Many crews will advocate for marlin release to keep the fishery sustainable. In the event that a marlin is too exhausted to survive, it will be taken but generally most are successfully released. No Marlin on the Menu - Fish designated for sportfishing are not permitted to be sold commercially or served in restaurants or other commercial venues. Prohibited species are marlin, sailfish, roosterfish and dorado.
Blast through sand with this lower-body beach workout. Avoid the compacted sand near the water (it's best for running) - it's too hard on your ankles. Go barefoot on a soft, flat area. One Circuit consists of 24 reps of each exercise, resting 30 seconds in between. Repeat the 2 more times for a total of 3 circuits, resting 60 seconds in between. Ready? Go!
For more information and online fishing license information visit www.bajasursportfishing.com. For conservation issues, check out the Billfish Foundation online, which “works worldwide to advance the conservation of Billfish and associated species to improve the health of oceans and economies.” The IGFA (International Game Fish Association) “is a not-for-profit organization committed to the conservation of game fish and the promotion of responsible, ethical angling practices through science, education, rule making and record keeping.”
Shuttle Run 1. Make three parallel lines in the sand, 5 yards apart. Straddle the middle line with your knees slightly bent and your arms bent so your hands are in front of your thighs. 2. Move to your right and bend at the knees to touch the line with your right hand. Then run to the left and touch the far left line with your left hand. Then return to the middle and continue until you've completed four runs to each side. Sand Skip 1. Skip forward so that you're jumping and landing on the same foot. 2. Work on leaping as high as possible by driving your knee upward as you push off the ground with your opposite foot. Do five skips on each leg. Body-Weight Jump Squat 1. Place your fingers on the back of your head and pull your elbows back so that they're in line with your body. 2. Dip your knees in preparation to leap. 3. Explosively jump as high as you can. When you land, immediately squat down and jump again.

CABO MARINE SHOW
Photos by Bruce Herman
Cabo M arine Show Sails into its Sixth Year! by James Longton
Celebrating its six year anniversary, the Cabo Marine Show is scheduled for May 14, 15, and 16, from 3pm to 9pm daily at Docks L-M-N of the IGY Marina, Cabo San Lucas. The highly anticipated boat and marine product expo has shown great progress and growth in its first five years and has quickly become a highly attended event for boating and fishing enthusiasts as well as industry leaders and an important fixture of Mexico’s robust nautical tourism, boating and yachting market. “Support from both our local and federal tourism authorities and the surrounding boating community has helped to make this Mexico’s longest running boat show,” says Sergio Igartua, event founder and owner of the show. “This year is sure to be our biggest and best yet.” This year’s edition will feature local and domestic yacht brokers, marine products and services, a large focus on the increasingly popular used-boat market, and several arts and crafts exhibits, all set along the boardwalk exhibit area surrounded by numerous restaurants, bars, and tourist shops. With the involvement of proud sponsors like Bahia Hotel & Bar Esquina restaurant, the event gives attendees the opportunity to explore the charming neighborhood and surrounding marina.
Official Event Guide
“In each year of the show, the participation of exhibitors and suppliers has been of great importance” continues Igartua. “We are pleased to welcome several returning exhibitors from last year including Commercial Essex, Village Marine Tec, and Maui Jim Sun Glasses. We’re also looking forward to exciting new additions like the new line of Chartplotters and Fishfinders from GARMIN.” Then of course, perhaps the most intriguing aspect of the show is the display of several new cruising yachts, including vendors like Emerald Pacific Yachts and Otaduy Yachts. Plus the section of the show dedicated to exhibiting sport fishing vessels from local vendors like Picante Sportfishing. For salty seafarers and land lubbers alike, this is a fun event set in one of the world’s most beautiful and bustling marine communities. BAHIA HOTEL & BEACH CLUB
More than a quarter century ago, Don Juan Esquivel built one of the first hotels on Medano Beach on a site that originally belonged to pioneering fisherman Don Yoka. As owner of a fishing fleet, he saw an opportunity to create a haven for fishermen. In 2007, a group of New York investors acquired the property. As a first step, the group developed the Bahia Hotel & Beach Club. What began as a humble fishing shelter has become an urban-chic hotel with a hip, renowned restaurant—Bar Esquina— that attracts locals and travelers from across the world. It provides personalized, city-style accommodations with views of the Sea of Cortez and is located within walking distance of the best swimming beach in Cabo San Lucas.

CABO SUP
CABO SUP is the first Stand Up Paddle Board Club located in the heart of Medano Beach, Cabo, offering lessons, rentals, and guided tours. CABO SUP features the only ASI (Academy of Stand Up Paddleboard Instructors) certified instructors in Baja.
Stand Up Paddling is the fastest growing water sport in the world. It is an amazing workout and a fun way to experience being on the water. There is no wrong or right way to Stand Up Paddle just get out there and enjoy nature!
6th ANNUAL CABO MARINE SHOW
CABO SUP owners and operators Lee and Meredith Vosburgh, started paddling 8 years ago in Montauk, Long Island (NY). They continued paddling when they relocated to Cabo 7 years ago to be the onsite partners of the Bahia Hotel & Beach Club. The decision to share their passion for Stand Up Paddle was brought about by the ideal location of the Beach Club. The Beach Club is located on Medano Beach, one block from the Bahia Hotel and on one of the most beautiful and pristine bodies of water in the world, the Sea of Cortez. Medano Beach is Cabo's most swimmable beach where the famous Land's End Arch marks the meeting of the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez. Jacques-Yves Cousteau named it "Nature's Aquarium". Many of the hotels on the corridor do not allow swimming due to rip currents and strong surf and therefore send their guests to Medano Beach for all water activities.
BAR ESQUINA
6th ANNUAL CABO MARINE SHOW
Bar Esquina is located in the center of the Medano Beach District, in the heart of Cabo San Lucas. The Urban setting of the Bahia Hotel & Beach Club, and Bar Esquina restaurant has created a unique vibe and lively dining option in Cabo. The menu features a unique twist on international creative cuisine: Mexicaninfluenced, Mediterranean flavors using locally sourced organic produce, fresh fish from the Pacific and Sea of Cortez, and top-quality prime cuts deliciously prepared on a mesquite grill. “Bar Esquina has become known not only for its dining experience but for its hip crowd and mix of locals, tourists and Bahia Hotel guests”, says Felipe Rebelo, Managing Director. Bar Esquina offers a varied ambience in accordance with the desires of the diners. For those who like socializing, you can hang out and dine at the marble bar; there’s also a romantic fireplace which imparts a delightful glow on the outside deck, and of course, the chef’s table overlooking our beautiful open kitchen where you can watch the chefs in action. “We like to call it casual elegance,” says Executive Chef Rogelio Garcia. With live music and an energetic crowd, Bar Esquina delivers a wonderful experience for a night on the town or a destination group event.
THE ISLANDS OF LORETO
For adventure-seekers, nature-lovers or simple peace and quiet, the Islands of Loreto offer an unknown paradise. CORONADO ISLAND This Island is located 7 miles northeast of the coast of the town of Loreto. It is a wildlife reserve where visitors may anchor, scuba and snorkel. On Coronado Island you can find sea dahlias, various species of cactus, wild cucumber and house-leek. You can also find bird colonies that nest on the island such as pelicans, gulls, petrels and sea ducks that can be spotted in the nearby waters. It’s very common to see sea lions, seals, elephant seals and sea otters.
ISLA DANZANTE Isla Danzante is a Loreto icon that is home to many endemic plants, coral reefs and a wide variety of marine species. Its lovely and small beaches are a great place to enjoy diving, hiking or just relaxing under the sun at Honeymoon Beach. MONTSERRAT ISLAND Located approximately 3 hours from Loreto, Montserrat Island is the perfect place for snorkeling and trail hiking. Made of volcanic rock, the island measures 4.35 miles long in direction North-South and 3 miles east-west. ISLA SANTA CATALANA A great extension of land and sea where you will find biznagas (local cactus species) of up to 16 feet tall, incredible natural beauty and a rich diversity of fauna. *
6th ANNUAL CABO MARINE SHOW
ISLA DEL CARMEN A 45 minute ride in a panga boat from the Loreto’s main dock, Isla Del Carmen is the largest island of the Sea of Cortez that consists of 15,000 protected hectares and is only accessible with a guide. This allows you to experience a strong coexistence with nature along with complete privacy and freedom. The history of Carmen Island revolves mainly around the salt deposits located on the north end of the island which are called Bahia Salinas. The Isla del Carmen salt industry ceased operations in 1984.
YACHTS ~ THE LIFESTYLE By Yeye
6th ANNUAL CABO MARINE SHOW
Pat Fearing: "What exactly do you do?" Bond: "Oh, I travel... a sort of licensed troubleshooter."
Travel, beautiful people, luxury and adventure. A lifestyle to fit the world of yachts can simply be described like this... James Bond. Casino Royale (2006) featured the 108 Predator with appearances from the XS 2000 and Sportsfish 37; Halle Berry climbed on board a Superhawk 48 in Die Another Day (2002); and in The World is not Enough (1999) a Superhawk 34 sped down London’s River Thames at more than 60 mph in a thrilling boat chase, which became the longestever Bond pre-title sequence. Until 1988, visiting yachtsmen had to post a bond equal to a 150 percent of their vessel value to dock in Mexico, but with the help of some visionary lobbying and legislation this law has changed and today yachts are considered “temporary imports” for up to 10 years and you only have to pay a small fee for a permit in the first port of entry. The story of how it happened can be read in past issues of Yachts International Magazine who published an article titled "Looking Up at Baja, Mexico."
The term yacht originated from the Dutch Jacht meaning “hunt. In modern use the term designates two rather different classes of watercraft, sailing and power boats, but it was originally defined as a light fast sailing vessel used by the Dutch navy to pursue pirates and other transgressors around and into the shallow waters of the Low Countries. After its selection by Charles II of England as the vessel to Britain from Holland for his restoration, it came to be used to mean a vessel used to convey important persons. Los Cabos gives you extraordinary choices in Marinas. IGY in Cabo San Lucas, features 380 slips and accommodates vessels up to 375 feet with a maximum 24 foot draft and boasts the highest quality services and amenities expected at a luxury yachting marina. Puerto Los Cabos, less than half an hour from the international airport and 4 minutes from San Jose Colonial down Town, offers you a Mexican tranquility atmosphere, 200 slips that can accommodate vessels up to 400 feet, drystack, and a boatyard with 150 ton travel lift. In Baja Califoria Sur's Capital City of La Paz, Marina Cortez offers the latest in environmentally friendly design and Marina Costa Baja gives you the whole world in one place with all the conveniences and culture of an international destination.
6th ANNUAL CABO MARINE SHOW
A lifestyle for adventure, more than sedentary pleasure. Think water with all its marine romance. Sport fishing, diving, cruising, skiing, dancing, gadgets and toys, sunshine, cocktails & food, and hopefully happiness. Nautical events, such as The Cabo Marine Show happening every year are great opportunities to meet with your yachting community. Wealth is associated with yachts, but it is not necessary. Besides rentals, options such as fractional ownership are available nowadays. After all, the world awareness is indeed evolving towards the appreciation of beauty and the possibility to enjoy a luxurious fun lifestyle. *

6th ANNUAL CABO MARINE SHOW
The Cabo M arine Show ¡MUCHAS GRACIAS! First off, we would like to extend a warm thank you to all of you who participated in this year’s sixth annual Cabo Marine Show, which took place on May 14-16, 2015, at the IGY Marina in downtown Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. With many exhibitors showcasing their marine and tourism related goods and services on the iconic Cabo San Lucas marina, and more than a dozen small to midsize vessels ranging from 20 to 100 feet, we have to say it was our best industry oriented show. The last six years have seen the Cabo Marine Show grow from a small range of local-area exhibitors, to a more focused and mature, international marine products and services event, with exhibitors coming in from different parts of mainland Mexico and abroad. The Show offers the best location out of any industry event of its kind in Mexico; an in-water and dockside setting at the center of the country’s safest and fastest growing international leisure boating and tourism destinations, in the heart of the downtown Cabo San Lucas marina. Thanks to its outstanding connectivity to both mainland Mexico and the United States, we believe the Los Cabos destination is the perfect place to host Mexico’s only boat show since 2010.
This has only become possible thanks to those of you who have invested your faith and belief in the show’s long-term potential in the course of our six year history, as we shoot for an even more successful and noteworthy, seventh year anniversary edition in 2016. Thank you!

DISCOVER Mexico's No. 1 Baja Beach Resort:
Villa del Palmar
at the Islands of Loreto by Anne Z. Cooke

If you're at your wits end, desperate to find a last-minute gift for your parents, your daughter or your club's long-serving president, treat him, her or them to a vacation at the Villa del Palmar resort, in Mexico, south of Loreto on the west coast of the Sea of Cortes. Buy a card, sign it "for your Villa del Palmar vacation," and pop it in the mail. A week, or even a long weekend at this palm-shaded resort, alone on a secluded beach looking over a skyblue bay, is the perfect gift for any occasion, from a significant birthday or anniversary, to Valentine's Day. I went there myself and would recommend it to anyone. If your friends, the lucky recipients, are the energetic type, a perfect day could start with a sunrise hike in the hills above the resort, a workout in the fitness center, or a wake-up yoga class. After breakfast -- omelets, French toast, fresh fruit and chilaquiles lead the menu -- they can jog along Villa del Palmar's private quarter-mile of shoreline or work up a sweat digging for edible clams. By mid-morning it's time to try paddle boarding or kayaking off the beach, an ideal place to practice since the bay is protected from wind and waves. Though tidal changes raise and lower water levels in the Sea of Cortes, most waves are little more than ripples. A dazzler for snorkelers and divers are the daily excursions beyond the bay, to other islands in the heart of the Loreto Bay National Marine Park. When marine conservationist and scuba diver Jacques Cousteau first explored these waters, years ago, he discovered a little-known but pristine ecosystem, "the world's aquarium" he called it. Praising
38
the Sea of Cortes as the "North American Galapagos," Cousteau's campaign to preserve the region was critical in securing national and world protection for this unique marine environment. I signed up for an amazing boat trip cruising among the nearest outlying islands, followed by two hours snorkeling off Isla Coronado, one of five of the closest islets -- others are Carmen, Danzante, Monserrat and Santa Catalina -- famous for rocky coves, powdery white sand beaches and water visibility between 25 and 50 feet. Sport fishing is also available for some regulated species, including dorado, sailfish, marlin, rooster fish and yellow-fin tuna. If your friends are chill-out beach people -- and who isn't, at least some of the time -- they'll find plenty of likeminded visitors who also prefer sunning, birding or sketching, and who choose solitude to beach vendors and rough mountain peaks to tourist-town souvenir shops. Flanked by the rugged Sierra de la Giganta range, the Villa del Palmar is the first and the only resort (and one hopes, the last) to occupy what is surely one of the Gulf of California's last virgin coastlines.
two, and three-bedroom villas and suites, all with air conditioning and fully equipped kitchens. Some have covered balconies with spectacular bay and island views. (See the photo at the top of this article.) Units can be reserved by the day or week, as in a hotel, or purchased as part of the resort's timeshare program. The 4,447-acre property has three restaurants, four pools, a deluxe spa, a fully-equipped fitness center and a cozy private disco nearby. Like most of Baja California Sur, the Loreto area is an arid environment, warm year around and with low vegetation. Summer days (low season) can be
very hot, especially in mid-day, when a hat and sunscreen are mandatory. Winter days are more temperate, with cooler nights. Water temperatures are generally mild, but can vary depending on the month and the currents. All-inclusive rates include meals and most bar and pool drinks, or you can pay for items individually. The only other dining or shopping options are in the historic town of Loreto, Baja's oldest settled town, about 30-40 minutes away by shuttle bus or taxi. For more mobility, rent a car; the area is uniquely safe and secure. For more information, visit www.villadelpalmarloreto.com. *
NEW FLIGHTS TO LORETO As of April 15, 2015, WestJet will offer weekly non-stop service from Calgary International Airport (YYC) to Loreto (LTO). “Loreto, Mexico may be one of the best places you’ve never heard of,” says Chris Avery, WestJet Vice-President, Network Planning, Alliances and Corporate Development. “Visitors can enjoy everything from sport fishing and kayaking to eco-tourism adventures.” “We have more flights and more seats to the places Canadians want to go,” said Avery.

HOME IMAGINE you live here by Adrienne Davis - Operations Manager for Hacienda Residences and The Agency Daughter of a successful pioneering Cabo Realtor and a Cabo’s favorite skin therapist, Adrienne Davis has had the privilege to call San Jose del Cabo ‘home’ since 1991. For the last 10 years Adrienne has worked full time in Los Cabos in the Real Estate industr y, enjoying an active life at the beach with her rescue dogs. “Los Cabos was a simple, rustic, low key town. I remember the first movie theater, the major flood of 93 and coming together as a community after wards, the opening of the first ‘super’ market, before then we had to go to multiple stores for groceries, and so many summers spent at the beaches. There was so little going on, so safe to wander around on our own as kids. It is always a little bittersweet to see the ‘old’ Cabo fade away, but change has meant lots of growth, a booming economy, and a lot of improvement.” Close your eyes. I mean, keep reading… Just pretend to close your eyes. And imagine: you’ve just been awakened by a sound, but you’re still in that beautiful limbo between the dream world and waking up. Birds are chirping; it’s a symphony of melodies so complex it seems only possible in your dream. The depth and harmonies are incredibly intricate. The birds are in your dream; vivid colours flapping through the trees in a haze-like illusion only possible in paradise. You hear the noise again but this time you recognize it and realize what woke you up. It’s your morning coffee, fruit and freshly baked sweet rolls being left at your door. You stretch both arms above your head, eyes still closed, and reach. Your reach is cut short and limited by the headboard so you push the energy out through your toes. You inhale and let out a loud howl of a yawn. The birds are still chirping… they’re real. They broke out of your dream and into the day. You open your eyes to see the light is softly dancing through the drapes… just around the edges and glowingly announcing the beginning of the rest of your life, or at least the beginning of the rest of your life, today. You’d thought about ignoring the morning and sleeping in until noon, but the steaming coffee and warm rolls
mustn’t be ignored! Come on, jump up and go grab the tray – bring it back to bed. Then climb back in with a steaming mug and dunk the croissant in; enjoy the lavish comfort a bit longer. Up you go to the door. Opening it, you squint that one-eyed pout of ‘it- must- be - an - angel - it’s-so - br ight’ moment. It could be true… who are we to say the sun is not an angel? The light from the day floods into the room, so bright the light washes away all contours and edges; only soft, glowing silhouettes exist - like you’ve abandoned the material world and stepped into a new realm – a parallel universe of soft and subtle light. How is it possible that something so bright can soften the hardness around you? Your eyes adjust – you return to ‘reality’. With tray in-hand, you swoosh open the curtains and slide open the glass door – you change your mind; why would you stay in bed, when you can curl up on that chaise lounge with this deliciously comfy blanket and take in the day? It’s a dream come true. You tuck the blanket around your feet and reach for your mug. You know those birds that broke free from your dream this morning? They’re there… singing and flying from nest to branch to flower… most likely mating, because, why not? The translucent blue sky is scattered with the lightest mist of white clouds, casually whisking above the bright green palm fronds with the deep blue Pacific Ocean glistening in the background and crashing on the shore. You see a huge splash, a pod of whales breaching and blowing spouts of misty salt water just beyond the panga that is bobbing carelessly by a thick boil of some excited swarm, or is it a school? Oh there’s another! No matter how often you see them, they always seem more mesmerizing and exciting than the last time. The beauty of these huge creatures living in a completely different world leaves you breathless. What is their world like? Your coffee is perfect. Rich and creamy – exactly the way you like it. You take a sip, close your eyes, and inhale deeply. This dream is true, and you can live it every day. Step out onto the warm sandy walkway and drift your way down to the shore. You think to yourself ‘I could get used to this…’ Well, sure you can! And why wouldn’t you? Life is short; there are so many ways to live it, but why not live it in paradise? That’s what we do here in Cabo. *

Real Estate questions asked by you, answered by local real estate expert Blake Harrington, of REmexico Real Estate Group
What is the closing process when purchasing a home in Los Cabos?
A:
There are thousands of Americans, Canadians, and/or ExPats that reside in Los Cabos full time in their deeded full ownership property. The process of closing a deal on your next Baja dream home has continually improved over the years. While each transaction has its own characteristics, here's how it works in most cases and with our buyers at REmexico Real Estate Group. Deposits: Once the buyer and seller have come to an agreement on price and terms in writing, we categorize the property as "Pending" and/or "Under Contract". The initial deposit is usually between 5-10% of the purchase price, or as had been written and agreed upon in the Offer to Purchase submitted by the buyer, and delivered to an escrow account within 5-7 days of acceptance. Escrow: There are two commonly used escrow holders in Cabo. Stewart Title and Fidelity both have representatives locally and provide services for safe transfers of purchase or proceed funds for both buyer and seller. Each company, respectively, hold accounts in United States and Mexico so the principals/clients can determine which account best suits their needs. Our clients find piece of mind in using these well-respected escrow companies when purchasing a home and we do work hand in hand with the escrow companies on the closings of each deal. Title and Closing Time Frames: As we've discussed before in the Destino Magazine Q&A, the two instruments to hold title depend on your citizenship and status within Mexico. 1. For nationals of Mexico, they may use traditional title with "Escritura". This process is a quicker process where titles can be drawn up in as little as 30 days and closing thereafter. 2. For foreigners, the "Fideicomiso" takes a bit longer to draw up within the banks. So, this makes the closing process more of a 60-90 day process, with most closings happening around the 90th day. Notary and Closing: Once all paperwork, titles are ready for transfer, the buyers and sellers meet with their broker and attorney with a local notary to finalize the deal. At this point, funds are released and all legal documentation transfers are completed. At REmexico Real Estate, we understand that this process may be a bit confusing. However, that is why we are here! We take pride in our knowledge of the process and in assisting our clients through the closing process smoothly.
