Los Cabos (the capes) is located in the southernmost tip of the State of Baja California Sur and consists of four main areas: Cabo San Lucas, San José del Cabo, Todos Santos and the East Cape. La Paz is the Capital of the state, however, technically it is not part of the municipality of Los Cabos. If you take a look at the Baja Sur map you can see that the highways and towns form a loop. The Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez meet at the very tip of the peninsula. It's very clear when you're on the Pacific side; the waves are much larger and powerful and the winds are stronger. If you go further north along the Pacific side the climate and beaches are very different than on the Sea of Cortez. It's usually a few degrees cooler, which is very pleasant during the warm summer months. In the Pescadero and Todos Santos area, the sand is dark and fine and the color of the water is deep blue. The sand in Sea of Cortez beaches is coarser and the water is a lighter tone of blue. The beaches in La Paz and the surrounding areas are possibly the most beautiful ones in Baja Sur. The white powdery sand and the waist-high water create a spectacular shade of turquoise, the kind you see in postcards. The mountains meet the desert, the desert meets the ocean. The Sierra de la Laguna is a mountain range that lies at the southern end of the peninsula. Above 800 meters in elevation dry forests transition to pine-oak forests. The main climate of the region is arid to semi-arid, however, there are very fertile areas where local farmers grow a variety of fruits and vegetables, especially on the Pacific side. The aquarium of the world. These are the words that Jacques Cousteau used to describe the Sea of Cortez. It is said that eons ago, back when the Earth and Continents were still taking their shape, the edge of Mexico split from the mainland to form the Gulf of California and the Baja Peninsula. This allowed the Pacific Ocean to rush into the gap and create the Sea of Cortez, or as some call it, Mother Nature’s own fish trap. Hundreds of varieties of fish and mammals found their way into this “trap” and either stayed in its warm shallow waters or ventured down into the cool bottom of the two mile-deep San Andreas Fault. For millenniums, the Colorado River has been dragging its rich minerals and nutrients into the Sea of Cortez, aiding the living species to thrive in these waters. In the months of January through March, Gray whales make their yearly migration from Alaska to give birth to their young in the shallow and warm waters of the Sea of Cortez.

Cabo San Lucas
This tourist friendly town, also just known as “Cabo,” is located on the tip of the Baja California peninsula and is full of entertainment for every age and liking. The Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean meet at Land’s End, where you can observe the beautiful rock formations and the famous Cabo arch. In Cabo San Lucas you can find Medano Beach, the liveliest beach in the Los Cabos area, an impressive marina and countless restaurants and bars that keep the town alive day and night.
San José del Cabo
Walking around downtown San José will allow you to experience a traditional Mexican town. You will find yourself surrounded by colorful buildings and quaint cobblestone streets that lead to the town’s picturesque zócalo (main plaza). Over the years, San José has become an artistic and cultural centre with numerous fine art galleries in its downtown art district as well as world-class restaurants. San José has a beautiful beach where you can take a horseback ride to explore the estuary that is home to many different bird species.
The Corridor
The corridor is the 40 km highway that connects Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo (about a 20 minute drive). Along this road you can find various hotels, luxury ocean front homes, championship golf courses and beautiful views. Have your camera ready and make a roadside stop at the Costa Azul view-point for photo opportunities and a refreshing coco frío (cold coconut).
Todos Santos
Located on the Pacific Ocean side of the peninsula, Todos Santos is an oasis where artists and surfers flock to enjoy the culture and excellent surf. Home to the famous Hotel California, this charming town offers great restaurants and a cooler climate than Cabo San Lucas and San José due to the breezes coming from the Pacific.
East Cape
People often call it “the old Cabo” because of its pristine beaches and small fishing towns such as Buena Vista and Los Barriles. The East Cape begins just east of San José and extends about 100 miles up the Sea of Cortez coast. Sixty miles outside of San José is the Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park, an eight fingered coral reef that offers outstanding snorkelling and scuba diving and turtle nesting on the beach. Very popular for fishing and surfing, the East Cape also attracts kite surfers, campers and folks who just want to get away from it all.
La Paz
La Paz is the capital of the state of Baja California Sur and is known for its warm people and beautiful beaches. This authentic Mexican city (as well as the general south Baja region) has been rated as one of the safest in Mexico and still maintains the small town feel that is very welcoming for tourists. La Paz is a departure point for tours and charters to the stunning Espiritu Santo Island as well as whale watching excursions. Stroll down the colorful malecón (boardwalk), walk hundreds of feet in waist high water at Balandra beach or have a fine dining experience; La Paz has a lot to offer.
Loreto
Loreto offers the best of both worlds for tourists who long to escape to an 'authentic-Mexico' with settings that take you back-in-time along with ocean activities that rival that of any other modern coastal city. In Loreto you'll find historic buildings such as the enchanting Mision de Loreto - a mission-style church that was built in 1697 as well as The Islands of Loreto which boasts Mexico's largest marine preserve where dolphins, seals, turtles and sea lions all play in the sea. For those who are partial to adventures on land; there is hiking, biking, and nature-tours that fill up a camera with pictures of radiant natural settings. Loreto is the perfect place for everyone from honeymooners to large families.

With calm waters, extraordinary fishing and perfect weather, some may argue that boating is the most popular attraction in Los Cabos. Whether you want to take a cruise to Santa María Bay on a luxury yacht or wake up at the crack of dawn for a fishing adventure, there are endless options to fit your needs.

BOAT RENTALS Private yachts and sailboats There are several charter companies that can accommodate your needs. What you do on your trip is really up to you, but it will typically consist of a tour of the landmark arch, a few hours of fishing, and a cruise to one of our beautiful bays for a swim. Most boats have fishing equipment and a knowledgeable crew, but the biggest difference between a yacht and a fishing boat rental is the cost. Fishing Boat Rentals You can always fish on a yacht, but cruisers, pangas and super-pangas are a more affordable option. Cruisers accommodate larger groups and are more comfortable when the sea is rough on a windy day. THE MARINAS Marina Cabo San Lucas The area’s largest commercial marina features 380 slips and accommodates vessels of up to 375 feet. Amenities include 24-hour security, electricity and potable water, a fuel dock, and convenient laundry and shower facilities. Puerto Los Cabos Located in La Playita just north of San José del Cabo is the newest marina in the area with 200 available slips 10

for boats up to 400 feet. Amenities are similar to Marina Cabo San Lucas, though the boatyard’s 150-ton travel lift can accommodate larger vessels. FISHING There’s a reason why the world’s richest fishing tournament - the Bisbee’s Black & Blue - has taken place in Los Cabos for over thirty years. This part of the world offers abundant sea life and an exceptionally high catch success rate, no matter what your level of fishing experience is. What to Expect Most charters include a fishing license, bait, tackle and equipment. Some also include food and drink or these amenities can be added at an additional cost. It is better to leave early; trips usually begin at 6:00 and 7:00 am and last around 6 hours. Cost will depend on the number of people in your party and the size of the boat you choose to rent. It is customary to leave the crew a gratuity of 15% to 20%. Bait and Tackle Most likely, the boat you charter will include your bait and tackle. If you need your own fresh bait, you may buy it along the Cabo San Lucas Marina or the crew you hire may also stop to buy it from the local fishermen on your way out.

Prepare yourself for an incredible show of nature as you swim side by side with colourful schools of fish, eels, rays, octopus, sea turtles and more. The Sea of Cortez or the “Aquarium of the World” offers many opportunities to experience incredible underwater wildlife.
SCUBA DIVING DESTINATIONS Note: travel time is from the Cabo San Lucas marina. Land’s End Intermediate-Advanced - 50’-60’ Five minutes by boat and you can share the water with sea lions and moray eels, with a sunken boat visible in the Falls. Sand Falls Beginners - Advanced - 30’-100’ Steep sand banks drop sharply into a canyon filled with tropical fish. The canyon runs from the depths of the Cabo San Lucas bay to within 30 feet of the beach. Pelican Rock Beginners - 25’-80’ This large rock attracts many tropical fish and is only five minutes from shore. Neptune’s Finger Advanced - 80’-100’ A spectacular canyon wall dive. Cabeza de Ballena Beginners - 20’-40’ A 25-minute boat ride leads to a dive through large boulders with many fish. Santa María Cave Beginners - 20’-40’ Reachable from the shore or a 35-minute boat ride, the entrance to Santa Maria canyon has a huge variety of fish which feed right from your hand. Chileno Beginners - 30’-70’ This location offers parking, sea turtle sightings, tropical fish, and night dives over a sandy and rocky bottom following a 35-minute boat ride. El Gavilán Intermediate/Advanced - 70’-100’ This rocky ledge leads into a canyon where groupers and larger fish are often sighted; 35 minutes by boat. Blow Hole Beginners/Advanced - 30’-70’ 35-minutes from San Lucas, or just 10
minutes from Chileno beach, this dive offers rocky valleys presenting a variety of fish. Las Salinas Beginners - 30’-45’ - A sunken Japanese fishing boat attracts a large assortment of fish at this beginners’ dive; about 80 minutes from Cabo San Lucas or one hour from La Playita. Gordo Banks Advanced - 110’-120’ - A seamount provides views of marlin, hammerheads, skip jacks and at times huge manta rays; one hour from La Playita. Cabo Pulmo Beginner-Advanced - 30’-100’ A one hour drive east of San José or five minutes by boat and you’ll find the only living coral reef in the Sea of Cortez. SNORKELLING SPOTS Cabo offers several methods for snorkelling. You may drive to a local beach and swim out, book a tour with one of the many popular companies, or charter a private boat. Tours are typically two or three hours. Stay away from the Pacific side of the peninsula; its strong currents make it very dangerous for any kind of water sports. Pelican Rock
A quick five-minute ride from the Cabo San Lucas marina or Medano Beach is all it takes to get to this fish-attracting rock.
Lover’s Beach This popular and uniquely-named beach is accessible only by boat. Be on the look-out, however, as the water is not roped off for swimmers. Santa Maria Bay Snorkel tours regularly visit Santa Maria Bay. If you choose to drive there, it’s an easy swim from the shore to the reef on the right side of the cove. Chileno Bay Snorkelers will find a safe, roped-off area for swimming at this common tour destination. Cabo Pulmo A Natural Marine Reserve in the East Cape, and may offer the best snorkelling in the area. This eightfingered coral reef is about a 2-hour drive from San José del Cabo, but it is well worth it!
GOLFING
With the desert meeting the Sea of Cortez as a backdrop, there is no doubt why Los Cabos has become a championship golf destination over the years. From Tiger Woods to Nicklaus and Fazio, many of the big names in golf have designed courses on this unique landscape. CABO REAL The newly renovated Robert Trent Jones Jr. designed golf course is one of the Corridor’s first championship courses and boasts beautiful views of the Sea of Cortez, elevation changes, and has hosted two PGA Senior Slams. 18 holes, Par 73, 7,461 yards. Appropriate golf attire is required on all courses and club rental prices range from $35 to $ 65. CABO DEL SOL Ocean Course - A Jack Nicklaus signature course with six ocean front holes (1.5 miles). Known for its “3 finest finishing holes in golf” the Ocean Course is said to be one of the most difficult yet beautiful courses in the area. 18 holes, 7,075 yards, par 72. SURFING
Baja Sur has been a popular surfing destination since the ‘50s. The East Cape is popular for kite surfing and the Pacific coast has several surf breaks where you will find less crowds. See our Baja Sur map and look for this symbol to locate the surf spots mentioned bellow. SAN PEDRITO Level: Advanced. Direction: Right, left. Location: Pacific side right before arriving to Todos Santos. Have you ever had a dream about flying like Superman or maybe swimming like a dolphin? Dreams can come true in Cabo! The FlyBoard is a device connected and powered by a personal watercraft, which allows propulsion underwater and in the air. Users are connected to the board by wakeboard boots, under which, water pressure provides thrust. A certified trainer controls the power and height and you control all the movement. Available at Medano beach or in the Puerto Los Cabos Marina in San José del Cabo.
STAND UP PADDLING
There is something special about paddling out and finding yourself floating in the ocean with just a paddle and a board. Stand up paddling is a great way to see marine life and to get a great workout and while enjoying nature. At Medano beach you can rent boards in several locations. Certain companies offer paddling lessons and some have yoga classes on the board.
KITE SURFING
This sport is most popular in the East Cape due to the El Norte winds. Playa Norte (the north-east side of the beach) in Los Barriles is said to be the most popular destination and is also the location for a professional kite-boarding school. La Ventana is also a popular spot and is closer to La Paz. There is less wind in Los Barriles than in La Ventana, but the surf is bigger. The best months are January, February, March, October, November, December. Every January, the Lord of the Wind tournament takes place in Los Barriles. 12

SEASONS June through November The summer months are known to be the best as the Southern Hemisphere’s swells send great waves to the Pacific, Cabo San Lucas, San José and the East Cape. December through February East Cape and Costa Azul are on the flatter side. The Pacific can be good this time of year because it’s exposed to the west swell. March through May This is the windy season. Swells are consistent and you’ll run into fewer crowds.

Adventure Parks There are several adventure parks in Los Cabos where you and your kids can experience zip-lining, backcountry ATV tours, a camel safari, and more. Zip-lines are appropriate for kids of 8 years and up and be prepared to hike from 5 to 15 minutes from line to line. Most companies include transportation. Parasailing If heights over land are not right for you, try a parasailing trip and gain some altitude to enjoy beautiful views of Cabo while tethered firmly to a speedboat!
Buggy, Atv, Or Bike Rentals There are several local companies which offer ATVs, buggies, and other off-road vehicles for trail and beach cruising. Strap on some goggles and hop behind the wheel of one of these off-road racers for an afternoon of fast-paced fun! Vehicles include typical ATVs or enclosed rail buggies or RZR ATVs. Tours are typically three hours, and drivers must be 16 years of age with a valid drivers’ license. If pedal-powered rides are more your speed, look into renting a mountain bike, beach cruiser, or joining a guided bicycle tour of town. Just make sure to wear a helmet! Horseback Rides, Nature Walks, and Bird Watching Los Cabos (particularly San José del Cabo) offers a number of horseback excursions for all ages. Saddle up for a sunset guided beach ride, venture up a hidden canyon trail, or just sit back in the shade while experienced horse trainers give the kids lessons in horsemanship – there’s something for everyone! San José also boasts a natural estuary and nature preserve. Enjoy a peaceful, self-guided nature walk to observe some of the lushest landscape in the area. Species of flora and fauna are abundant: dozens of species of cactus, lizards, and birds can be spotted on this solitary walk, just a few minutes from downtown. Cactus-lovers may also want to check out the nearby cactus gardens Wirikuta, offering a large variety of cacti laid out in an artful outdoor setting.
Wet Fun Water Park Located about 20 minutes from San José, this water park has shallow pools and small slides for young children, water mushrooms, a pirate ship and a giant bucket that dumps water on the bystanders bellow. For the adrenaline seekers, several fast and large slides stand tall and mighty and offer a great view of the beautiful surrounding mountains. To get there take HWY 1 north from the San José International Airport towards La Paz and East Cape. After about 15 miles, the exit for Caudaño and the water park will be at km 66. Follow this road for a few minutes and you will find the park on your right. Turtle Release Every year, several species of endangered sea turtles nest in the warm sands of Los Cabos. Your family will have the opportunity to help these fragile and tiny creatures make it safely into the sea. Children will learn about the importance of conservation and they will surely enjoy the experience of helping these little friends. Sol de Mayo Waterfall Cascade Located about an hour and a half away from Los Cabos, the Sol de Mayo Oasis is yet another natural beauty of the Southern Baja California region. The hike leads the adventurous to a majestically beautiful oasis where everyone can swim and even dive into the cool, serene waters. Be sure to pack a lunch, and take plenty of water. There are plenty of signs to guide everyone to this wonderful piece of paradise. After arriving in Santiago, turn right up the little hill towards the town square. There are many ways, in Baja California Sur, on how you can interact with sea lions: you can dive with them in Cabo San Lucas or you can visit them on a snorkel excursion in Espiritu Santo island, Cabo Pulmo or Loreto just to name a few hot spots. When we talk about this animal we usually refer to the Californian Sea Lion, a species that populates the North Pacific region all the way from South East Alaska till Central Mexico. These mammals are very curious and playful and although they look like very lazy when they are sunbathing on the rocks these are very intelligent animals that can be trained to perform various tasks as they are used in: zoos, circuses, oceanariums as well as they are trained by the U.S. Navy for military operations. In Baja California Sur we are lucky enough to have the privilege to observe them in the wild, as it should be: Sea Lions can be aggressive but if used to humans they display no fear and actually enjoy our company. Everybody in the marina knows Pancho, an alpha macho that made himself famous by “chasing� fishing boats returning from a trip in order to get fed by delighted tourists with bait leftovers. In the water they are very agile and fast, it is impressive to observe a full grown male that can reach 2,4 m (7,9 ft) and 350 Kg (770 lb) underwater while hunting for squids, sardines or other fish. They belong to the family of the Otariidae also known as eared seals and one of their distinctive signs are the external ear flaps and larger fore flippers and pectoral muscles, you can tell the difference between a male and a female by the size, females are usually much smaller. They reproduce between May and August ,so that you know now when you need to be in the region if you want to see the little newborns, also they don't migrate, so there is the chance to see them year round. Last curiosity: Sea Lions are a favorite meal for Orcas (Killer Whales), recent studies show that they have an ally, in fact this is a terrific news in the animal kingdom, since help comes from a different species: the Humpback Whales. Why this happens is still a big question mark: could it be just altruism? In fact scientist tend to believe more in an aggressive behaviour of the whales in order to protect themselves and other family members. We started talking about sea lions and ended up with the whales, no matter what, get out there and enjoy the incredible wildlife of Baja California Sur, possibly with a reputable company that respects nature and the animals. *

Did you know the Tropic of Cancer runs through the Baja California peninsula? Specifically,
it crosses the state of Baja California Sur at the 23°26′13.6″ latitude circle. Its position is not fixed and varies over time. This imaginary line passes through sixteen different countries and Mexico is blessed to be one of them. Within Mexico, it runs through the states of Baja California Sur, Sinaloa, Durango, Zacatecas, San Luis Potosi, Nuevo Leon and Tamaulipas, as well as the Gulf of California and the Gulf of Mexico. Most regions that lie along the Tropic of Cancer experience hot summers and mild winters. It is called the Tropic of Cancer because when it was named two thousand years ago from the latin word for crab, the sun was facing the Cancer Constellation, and also because when the sun reaches the zenith at this latitude it is entering the astrological sign of Cancer. Some great spots close to Los Cabos that are nearby the Tropic of Cancer are Cabo Pulmo, a beautiful community on the Sea of Cortez or Gulf of California where you can participate in many activities. Such as scuba diving, snorkeling, ocean kayaking and camping if you are more adventurous, although there are fantastic accommodations from rustic palapa bungalows to nice villas and comfortable hotel rooms. But a day trip is also a great plan if you want to get back to Cabo for dinner after a great day at the Cabo Pulmo reef. About an hour from Los Cabos, along highway 1 you can find a wonderful monument for the Tropic of Cancer just south of the oasis town of Santiago. At this monument site you can park and take a driving break where you can browse the little museum as well as take some amazing photos of the valley views towards the Sierra de La Laguna mountain range. Afterwards, Santiago is just a few minutes away. There you can enjoy some great tacos at an oasis orchard restaurant or keep on driving through the town on to the dirt trails that lead to the mountains
where for sure you will discover amazing waterfalls and streams. There are many signs showing the way, but you may also want to ask in town for directions to be sure. Take a box lunch, lots of water, and don’t forget good trail shoes, swimming suit, hat and of course your camera. Sunblock is not recommended and actually not allowed if you plan to swim, no problem if you are just hiking. Luckily there are many great trees to take shade in as well as vertical rock formations for sheltering from the sun. Now, on the complete opposite side or the peninsula, the Pacific Ocean side or the west coast, there is also a marker for the Tropic of Cancer. It is on Highway 19 just south of Todos Santos and north of Pescadero and Cerritos Beach. With cooler temperatures due to the Pacific Ocean breezes, this area is also paradise. You will see along the highway abundant orchards of mango trees as well as huge fields of peppers and basil. Delicious farm to table restaurants are a characteristic of this region which has a very happy international community made up of surfers, artists, restaurateurs, fisherman, and many other trades including the tourism industry. If visiting this area, the not to be missed spots are the “Pueblo Magico Todos Santos” or magical town of Todos Santos, Cerritos beach and Pescadero farm town. Todos Santos is perfect for walking the streets and checking out its numerous artisan shops, cultural sites, restaurants and bars. At Cerritos for sure a surf lesson and beach lounging. And in Pescadero a must stop at any of its delicious restaurants and outdoor cafeterias, and if you are a into skateboarding, just a block off the highway there is a very radical skatepark. Well, that is a little bit of information about the Tropic of Cancer in Baja, and some of the reasons why I love living nearby this imaginary line. ALL THAT'S FISHY from Land's End to La Paz by Gary Graham
This month is always filled with anticipation as summer’s last scorching-hot breath begins to fade. Looking behind often allows us to have a hunch of what to expect in the fall season. There is a reason many of the big fish tournaments take place during October – and to paraphrase James Carville’s, "The economy, stupid," -- “It’s the size of the fish, stupid!” Generally, more large billfish and yellowfin tuna are caught this time of year and after reviewing the summer season, we’ve had: • The relentless snap of wahoo through spring and summer. • The steady parade of huge yellowfin tuna to scales up and down both coasts of Baja Sur. • Blue and black marlin (large and small) joined by stripers and sailfish as they teased anglers with their “catch me if you can” attitude. • Dorado were an unexpected dud; most were small juveniles while the larger variety seldom came to the party. Anglers spend countless hours trying to explain the cause of these phenomena. However, as summer exits ‘stage left’ and fall enters, tournament season begins and anticipation dissolves into excitement. Expectation is not only for the targeted billfish, yellowfin tuna, wahoo and perhaps dorado, it is for other species in play as well. From the beaches or inshore, personalbest-sized roosterfish, along with jack crevalle, equally hard fighters; toothy sierra, another popular choice, along with bonito and several varieties of skipjack are also great inshore fun. Down deeper the amberjack, pargo and cabrilla are equally fun to catch and not too shabby for dinner. For the tournament participants it’s all
about the size of the fish and how much money can be won. Beginning October 11-15, 2016, the Los Cabos Billfish Tournament -- last year hosted 37 teams with 208 anglers who took away $445,500 in cash, plus a truckload of other prizes. Followed by the Bisbee “Los Cabos Offshore” on October 14 – 16, 2016 that last year hosted 95 teams with 628 anglers winning nearly $630,000 plus merchandise for the winning catches. The granddaddy of them -- the Bisbee “Black and Blue” October 18 – 22, 2016 -- is considered to be the Super Bowl of Billfish tournaments. Last year’s event attracted 121teams with 945 anglers competing for $2,985,036 in cash plus merchandise. To put this in perspective: Team Tranquillo, with Michael Moretti and crew, traveled from Costa Rica taking first place in the Bisbee’s “Los Cabos Offshore” Tournament with a 399-pound black marlin earning $460,200 and a 327- pound blue marlin in the “Black and Blue” for a combined payout of $2,971,662 for the two events for the second-highest single team payout in Black and Blue history. Tournament directors of the three events expect at least as many participants as last year. Regardless of whether you are here to enjoy the great fishing by adding to your ‘personal best’ list, you are here to compete in the big money/ big fish tournaments where you could catch a fish of a lifetime and become a millionaire as well; or you are not even competing, come and enjoy the festive weigh-ins which are open to the public every afternoon during the events. Of all of the places to travel, tiny Loreto would not have made my list of fun places for kids. But after traveling to the seaside town, nestled in the rolling desert hills of Mexico’s Baja California Sur, I can’t imagine families shying away from the cozy town. Loreto’s Tasty Treats
With a population of only 14,000, Loreto is a sleepy town—very sleepy. Wandering the streets, there is hardly a soul in sight; most are fishermen and they spend their time down at the marina. It gives you a thrilling feeling, like you’re the only ones in town, and makes it peaceful to stroll through Loreto’s downtown area. Children will love the brightly colored buildings, painted in shades of blue, orange, pink and yellow. One thing that Loreto definitely doesn’t lack is authentic restaurants, ready to serve their best tacos and margaritas. Most have patios so you can sit outside and enjoy the sunlight. The delicious Mexican food won’t be lost on little ones, but once you’ve eaten, take them for a real treat—ice cream. La Michoacana is an ice cream lover’s paradise. The freezers are filled with endless flavors of popsicles and ice cream bars. Pick a flavor, any flavor! Enjoy simple flavors like vanilla, chocolate or strawberry? Craving something different like mint chocolate chip or mango? You can even get cream-based bars with whole strawberries or kiwi inside, or chocolate covered bananas. Kids will go nuts over the options… especially the treats covered in peanuts, sprinkles or coconut. They also make mini ice cream bars that are the perfect size for little ones. I’ve had ice cream in Mexico before, but the quality of the ice cream at La Michoacana is off the charts.
Loreto was the first Spanish settlement in Baja California and served as the capital of Las Californias for 80 years after the village was established in 1697. To take in some of the history the town holds, visit the old-fashioned capitol building. Kids will be enthralled with the life-size paintings that line the walls. Continue down the main walkway to the Mission of our Lady of Loreto, which is also the start of El Camino Real, a famous path connecting the Spanish missions from Loreto to Sonoma, California. The mission is also home to a museum that will teach you more about the local culture. Between the two buildings is a long walkway covered by beautiful archways formed by trees with deep green leaves. It is a picturesque place to stroll while you and your brood meander through shops carrying a variety of handcrafted Mexican products like textiles, artwork, ceramics, jewelry and smaller trinkets.
Making Loreto Your HomeAway-From-Home
One of the most important parts of any vacation is where you’ll be staying. In Loreto, there are basically two options: If you prefer to stay in the heart of this sleepy fishing town, consider the Posada de las Flores. Located right across from the municipal capital, Posada de las Flores is a hacienda-style hotel painted in a gorgeous rose pink color. If you prefer to stay somewhere with a laid-back resort atmosphere and plenty of activities for the kids, check out Villa del Palmar. While it’s a little ways out of the city, their shuttle regularly brings guests in and out of Loreto. This fantastic resort has its own beach, complete with kayak and paddleboard rentals, a designated kid’s pool and a kid’s club that educates children and offers plenty of arts, crafts and activities for little ones to enjoy. The resort also has a Presidential Suite that can sleep up to 12 so it’s a great fit for large families traveling together. *

Stefano Miotto, Owner of La Dolce Vita Restaurants, came to Mexico for the first time in 1991 his destination being Puerto Vallarta. He worked in the restaurant/bar industry for 3 years and in 1994 he joined the team of La Dolce Vita Italian Restaurant. In late 1996, Stefano was made partner and he lead the opening of the second restaurant in Cabo San Lucas, which was built from scratch and opened its doors on February 28, 1997. "During the first 3 years I remember barely making ends meet and going to the main boulevard to try to get people to follow me to the restaurant while I was making pizzas, salads and washing dishes," says Stefano, "Well, it worked-out, and shortly after the restaurant became a great success with both tourists and locals, and that is when I decided to open a second location." Stefano partnered-up with Juan Calderoni who is still his partner to this day and in 2001 they opened the second La Dolce Vita in San Jose Del Cabo. To this day, both locations of La Dolce Vita are still one of the most consistent and thought after restaurants that do not cut any corners nor compromise the quality of their food and service, and all at a reasonable price. With 35 years of experince in the food industry and 20 years in Los Cabos, La Dolce promises an unforgettable dinning experience. 18

Who are you and where do you come from? We are an Indian family living in Cabo since 2013. What made you decide to open a restaurant in Los Cabos? Los Cabos has a lot of international cuisines, however, the Indian cuisine was missing. Also, Indian kitchen and Mexican food have a lot of spices in common, so we thought it would be a good idea to give Mexico the same spices with a little Indian twist. How do you see the food scene changing in India and/or Los Cabos? Food in some parts of the world is more geared to fast food, while in other parts it's focused on healthy conscious eating. In both scenarios, Indian food caters very well because the spices that are used offer healthy eating as well as flavorful taste. What are the key factors in making Indian food “authentic�? Indian food is rich because of the combination of many different spices. The color, flavor and aroma that arise in the process of cooking make the food authentic. What are your long term goals for Namaste India? Namaste India wants to offer locals and tourists the spices, colors and flavors - an authentic Indian kitchen in Cabo.
Tell us about your history as a Chef... I realized that I liked this type of work thanks to my mom and grandmother who are great cooks and when they prepared something I liked to help and observe. They would make bread, dessert, pastas, meats, all done at home. At the age of 12 I started to cook and I made my first home-made pasta where I cooked for my oldest brother and then for my cousins and friends. At 14 years old I asked my parents if I could go to a restaurant of a friend of the family, and this is where I started my training on how to prepare food for a lot of people at the same time. I enjoyed learning all this. I worked at this place during college and on school breaks I would work in other places to see new things. After college I went to live in Milan and then to Manchester to learn a different culture and language. Then I returned to Italy, after that Paris and London where I was fortunate to work in several restaurants are considered the best in the world and with award winning chefs with 2 and 3 Michelin stars. What brought you to Cabo San Lucas? I came to Cabo San Lucas with Chef Gennaro Esposito from Naples (he has 2 Michelin stars and is considered one of the best in Italy). I worked with him and he was asked to do a consultancy for the Sunset Da Mona Lisa restaurant, which was scheduled to last for a week, but I stayed for 4 months to carry out the consultancy as Gennaro had to return to Italy. I went back to Italy and returned to Cabo San Lucas in October 2013 to live and work as the Corporate Chef of the Mona Lisa Group. Italian food has been adopted throughout the world - why do you think it has evolved so much ? Italian food has evolved because the Chefs maintain the tradition and roots in the cuisine, and they improve it with new the technical association of new ingredients that leave a more personal version of a traditional dishes.

Imagine floating in a turquoise bay with pink sand, snorkelling with a whale shark or riding some epic waves, each beach offers something unique. Here is a list of the must-see beaches to help you decide which one is for you or just visit them all!
Cabo San Lucas Along the Corridor If you’re looking for the action, here it is. El Médano (as the locals call it) is a 2-mile stretch of hotels, restaurants and bars, right on the sand. It’s a swimmable and family-friendly beach with endless options for souvenir shopping. Numerous activities and water sports are available. If you want to take a water taxi to Lover’s Beach, this is the best spot to do it. Its stunning view of Land’s End and the vast entertainment options make this beach a must-see.
LAS VIUDAS
Las Viudas (The Widows) beach is not visible from the road and is possibly the most private beach you will find on this list. What makes it unique are the rock formations that create small pools and coves where you can have a private and peaceful beach day. This beach is swimmable with caution, but if you find your own pool you can avoid the waves. Location: Turn right at Km. 12.5 of the corridor and follow the dirt road down to the beach. There is a sign that reads “Las Viudas” but keep your eyes peeled; the entrance sneaks up on you. Tips: You won’t find any services or vendors so bring all your beach essentials with you.

Location: Travelling west from Cabo San Lucas towards San José, follow the sign which reads “Santa María” and exit the highway at Km. 13. Follow the dirt road until you reach the parking area. Tips: Swim from the shore towards the rocks on the right side of the beach for a great snorkeling experience.
San Jose del Cabo PALMILLA
CHILENO
Location: In the heart of downtown Cabo San Lucas. The beach is accessible by foot through the east side of the marina or via Avenida del Pescador. Tips: Be prepared to be approached by souvenir vendors. If you’re not there for the shopping, just respond with “No, gracias.” Prices don’t vary much from one water sports rental place to another. Visit Lover’s Beach while you’re there.
LOVER’S BEACH
Getting there is an adventure in itself, due to the fact that it is reachable only by boat or kayak. The easiest way is to take a water taxi from the Cabo San Lucas Marina or Medano Beach. Prices are around $15.00 USD per person. Ask your captain to cruise by the arch and the sea lion rock for some great photo opportunities. Once you arrive, you’ll notice the striking rock formations and caves. Walk to the other side of the rocks and you’ll find yourself looking at the Pacific Ocean; the locals call this Divorce Beach. This side is very dangerous for swimming because of the powerful undertow, so swim on Lover’s Beach only. Location: Land’s End beside the famous arch. This beach is accessible only by boat. Tips: There are a couple of vendors who offer beer and water, but you won’t find any other services. A good idea is to spend the day at Medano Beach and take an hour or two to go to Lover’s Beach; this should be time enough to explore this natural wonderland.

Chileno is a very popular location for snorkelling, swimming or just spending the day under the newlyinstalled palapas. You’ll find tide pools at the east end of the beach and beautiful reefs offering excellent snorkelling and scuba diving. This is the only beach with public restrooms and it has plenty of palapas for shade. Location: Going from Cabo San Lucas towards San José, follow the signs for Chileno Beach Club near Km. 14 of the main highway. Tips: If you visit Chileno on a weekend, make an effort to arrive early; snorkelling visibility is often better in the mornings, you’ll avoid the mid-day snorkel tours and, if you beat the crowds, you’ll be guaranteed a palapa to yourself for much-needed shade. Bring snorkelling gear!
SANTA MARIA
Santa Maria offers a stunning horseshoe cove with coarse coral-colored sand and abundant marine life. Boat excursions and private charters often stop here to enjoy the snorkelling and scuba diving that this Na-
Palmilla beach is known for its family-friendly calm waters and a mile-long stretch of beach. Located within the resort community of Palmilla, you will find yourself surrounded by oceanfront luxury homes, the One&Only Hotel and the world renowned Jack Nicklaus Ocean Nine golf course. Pangas and fishing cruisers are available for charter, but you won’t find water sport rentals such as kayaks or jet skis. Location: Take the Palmilla ramp exit at Km. 27. Follow the signs and turn into the main beach parking area before the entrance to the One&Only Hotel. Tips: Palmilla is popular among local families on the weekends, so arrive early if you want a palapa, or bring your own umbrella. No services are available here.
COSTA AZUL
If what you’re looking for is a good surf spot you can find it here without driving out of town. Head over to Zipper’s for a surf session and lunch and beers at the restaurant. To the west of Zippers is Acapulquito beach where the Cabo Surf Hotel and Mike Doyle Surf School are located. You can find surf shops in the area where you can rent surf and
stand-up paddle boards and set up lessons. The surf is bigger during the summer, and in the winter this is a good spot for snorkelling and swimming. Location: Exit into the arroyo at Km. 28 via the Costa Azul Bridge. Tips: Swimming with caution is possible in this area but keep an eye out for surfers.
On the Pacific CERRITOS
Cerritos beach is a popular surf spot and swimming here is relatively safe. The scenic 45-minute drive from Cabo San Lucas is well worth the trip as you drive along the pristine Pacific coast. The Cerritos Beach Club Restaurant is a perfect spot to spend a relaxing day, maybe even get a massage on the beach. If you want to be active, you can take a surf lesson at Baja Surf Camp or rent surf and boogie boards at the Costa Azul Surf Shop. Location: Exit at Km. 66 of the Cabo San Lucas to Todos Santos Highway. Watch the markers and look for the signs. Drive about 1.7 miles to the beach area. Tips: Lounge chairs, restrooms, food and drinks are available at The Cerritos Beach Club Restaurant. The ocean currents are strong and the waves can be quite powerful on a big day, so swim with caution.
La Paz
BALANDRA
A stunning bay that will take your breath away. You can walk back and forth in the bay in waist high water that is crystal clear with shades of blue turquoise. Follow the shore towards the north-east side and you will find the famous “mushroom rock” as well as other interesting rock formations. Pictures just don’t do it justice. You won’t regret visiting Playa Balandra! Location: About 30 minutes from the boardwalk in La Paz. Simply follow the main drag along the boardwalk, then through Costa Baja Golf Course and continue to wind around the coast and through the mountains until you see the signs for the beach. Tips: No bathroom facilities. There is a truck where you can buy water and snacks, but it is recommended to bring your own in case they are closed. There are palapas, but not a lot. You can rent kayaks and snorkel gear.

A wildlife reserve where visitors may anchor, snorkel, scuba and camp. The panga ride usually includes a cruise around the island where it’s very common to see sea lions, seals and even sea otters. The only swimmable beach on the island has pristine white sand and shallow crystal clear turquoise water, which creates ideal snorkelling conditions. Coronado Island is the ideal place for an adventure or to simply immerse yourself in nature and relax. Location: About 7 miles or 30 minutes (on boat) northeast of Loreto. Tips: To get to Coronado Island you must take a boat or a panga. You will find pangas in Loreto’s Marina that you can hire to take you. The best option is to ask your concierge to arrange this for you. There are no services or restaurants on the beach. There are several large palapas with tables and benches and also an eco-restroom. Many of us are already familiar with tequila, but what about mezcal? Before going over their differences, let's talk about why they are often referred to as cousin spirits. Like tequila, mezcal comes from the agave plant. In fact, tequila used to be called mezcal, until its name was adopted from the town in the state of Jalisco called Tequila, where it was produced on a grander scale for the first time. Like a good tequila, mezcal is sipped and enjoyed; you do not shoot it. During a mezcal tasting you will be asked to first rub some of the alcohol on the top of your hand to take in the aroma; then you drink a small sip and swirl it in your mouth to let the flavors slowly emerge. Drinking a good tequila or mezcal is a true cultural tradition, almost a ritual, that Mexicans are surely proud of. There are many technical differences between mezcal and tequila and we will only be scratching the surface on this subject. First, let's get to know the natural source: The Ag a ve Pl a nt - The ideal growing conditions for agaves are open areas with rocky soil and abundant sun. These plants might all look the same to us, but there are 200+ species of agave in the American Continent and 75% of these can be found in Mexico. Around 39 can be used for mezcal, Espadín being one of the most popular ones. Tequila can only be made from one type of agave: the blue agave.
Tequila & Mezcal are produced in dif ferent regions of Mexico Tequila is produced in the entire state of Jalisco and in certain municipalities of Michoacan, Guanajuato, Nayarit, and Tamaulipas. Mezcal can only come from these “approved” states: Guerrero, Zacatecas, San Luis Potosí, Durango, six districts of Oaxaca, one municipality of Guanajuato and eleven municipalities in Tamaulipas, and recently approved, Michoacán. The state of Oaxaca is where most of mezcals are made.

When making mezcal, the piñas are cooked in a cone-shaped large pit in the ground. A fire is lit in the bottom of the pit to heat-up the fire-proof bricks that line the pit. The piñas are cut in half and placed in the pit, they are then covered with soil, clay and leaves of the agave plant, which contain a natural yeast. They are left in the smoky underground “oven” for several days; this process is what gives it the signature smoky flavor. Once the piñas are ready they are crushed with a tahona, which traditionally consists of a device ch a horse, an ox or a donkey, pulls in a large wheel made of stone. The stone es the piñas and separates the fiber the juice, which is then moved to the ntation and distillation process. Mezcal be distilled in either a clay pots — which it an earthy flavor — or in copper pots, produces a smoother spirit.

mezcal is unique and it might take a farmer up to 10 years to grow the same plant again. Due to natural factors, each batch is always different, even if it comes from the same agave plant. Producers number each bottle from one batch and if you run-out of your favorite, like wine, the next batch/year may not be exactly the same. With tequila you have the same flavor and quality every time, due to the more industrialized production process. You can also find mezcals that are produced in large facilities, and as you get to know mezcal you will notice the difference. It’s something like eating Mrs. Fields cookies or a fresh batch from the local bakery. With tequila, the piñas are steamed in traditional brick ovens or stainless steel autoclaves (the more industrial way) converting complex carbohydrates into simple fermentable sugars. The traditional piña crushing process is the same as for mezcal; however, modern distilleries now use a mechanical crusher. Many distilleries add cultivated yeast to the juices to speed-up fermentation; traditionally, the yeast that grows on leaves of the agave would be used. After fermentation comes the aging process in oak barrels to create the reposados (rested) and añejos (aged). For silver or white tequila distillation is the final process it undergoes.

Mezcal is preferably served in a gourd in order to conserve the purity of the flavor. It's usually accompanied by orange slices and sal de gusano (a mix of salt, toasted and ground agave worms and chile). The traditional Mexican way to serve tequila (especially in the mainland) is with a sangrita, a tomato-based juice that accentuates the tequila's flavors and helps cleanse the palate. Some people prefer tequila, some prefer mezcal. It's a matter of personal taste. Maybe try a mezcal next time and see if you're a tequila person or a mezcal one. *

The talented array of live music bands that entertain crowds in popular Los Cabos venues range in style, however, there is a predominant classic rock & roll influence. One of the longest playing guitarists in Cabo San Lucas, Juan Cerecero, used to be the front man for the well-known local band, Strogeno. After a half decade run at Jungle Bar, Cabo Blue and the occasional appearance at Cabo Wabo, the group of artists split up and Strogeno ceased to exist. The soft spoken, long-haired, Cerecero, returned to the Cabo music scene this summer 2016, with Electric Lady Band, a new group includes vocalist Angie Vertti, Daniel Alvarez on bass and Hoguer Aldret, banging away on drums. The new group's name, For a taste of something jazzy and a little toned down from the rock & roll sound, Mauricio Acuna Bautista and Felix Figueroa Agundez, combine their keyboard percussion and electric guitar talents, playing tunes from such greats as George Benson, Stevie Wonder, Elvis, Frank Sinatra, Santana, Jerry Lee Lewis, and a litany of other Motown era sounds from the legendary 196070's greats. Every Saturday night, Mauricio teams with the sultry, sexy-looking, soulful-singing, Jimena Bautista, and Sergio Hesting on drums, at El Charro Loco Restaurant Bar in the historic downtown area of San Jose del Cabo. "I was born in Cabo San Lucas," Mauricio Acuna said, who went on to attend the Academy of Music in La Paz and added, ''I have been playing music professionally for 25 years. My favorite style of music is soft Latin jazz. I really enjoy playing that style the most." As for his immensely talented partner in musical crime, Felix Figueroa Agundez, Mauri noted, ''Felix has been playing guitar for about 100 years," Acuna jokingly mentioned. A rock & roll band that regularly plays within the outdoor confines of Cabo Blue Bar is the group Los Rancheros Tristes (The Sad Ranchers). The four-member band-mates originally hail from Orizaba, Veracruz, MĂŠxico. Lead singer and bass player, Albert Serrano, is accompanied by Aldo Petrelly on drums, and the Dominguez brothers Francisco, playing lead guitar and Jacobo Dominguez on keyboards. The quartet from the Eastern Mexico area, where Hernan Cortez and his Spanish soldiers first landed in February 1519, with eleven ships, about a dozen horses, and 500 men, arrived in Los Cabos themselves; two years and eight months ago. "We had reached our limit in Veracruz,'' remarked Albert Serrano. "We were playing Cumbia and other traditional Mexican music for 10 years at weddings, anniversaries, parties, etc., and we all felt it was time to grow and move on towards something bigger and better, which for us has been Cabo San Lucas." "Our favorite music is classic rock and blues," added 26

the mild-mannered Serrano. ''We like to play music that people request, so it's normal for us to play one Metallica song, for instance, and immediately thereafter, we'll be playing Cumbia or any type of Mexican music that people request,'' added Serrano. One of the most unique sounding bands in the Southern Baja California Region of Los Cabos is Pani-Hari. The three member group is led by the gorgeous-looking lead guitarist Daniela Hernandez, who is complemented in their surf jazz fusion sound by equally attractive drummer, Fabiola Verduzco. Both Daniela and Fabiola both hail from Irapuato, Guanajuato, while bass player Moises Rojas is originally from San Jose del Cabo. "We've been playing together since high school,'' noted Daniela, in describing her friendship with Fabiola. Pani-Hari is one of the few local talents that play their own original songs. The band once headlined the San Jose del Cabo Music Festival in 2012. They also perform in La Paz, Cerritos Beach, Organic Markets, and every festival in the area, and Syracuis Bar is the lone venue that features the locally popular them. Some of their more popular songs are Punjab, Desierto Azul, Bar Man and All Night Long. For a taste of their distinct sound, look for and listen to Pani-Hari LIVE on youtube. Brian Flynn, has been strumming his guitar to country tunes and rock & roll songs in Cabo since the mid-1980's. In August he is on tour in the U.S. American cities of Minnesota and South Dakota, and in September, the incredible guitarist, performed in the North American states of Nebraska and Washington. The world famous Cabo Wabo Cantina, hosts a tremendously good selection of house bands that regale the rock & roll crazed populace that fill the historic structure. The incredibly talented band Cabo Uno has been their resident band for nearly 16 years and is integrated by Fabian Mendez on base, Gilberto Mendoza on guitar, Geovan Olachea on drums and Chava Aguilar on vocals, keyboard and guitar. At the Jungle Bar, a mere 40 feet from Rip's and Cabo Wabo, performs La Flaka Band, which consists of lead singer, Esther Torres, who also plays bass and saxophone. Esther's other band-mates who all hail from Mazatlan, Sinaloa, are Kiki Martinez on drums and trumpet, Teban Quintero - percussion, and Walter Alvarez. Their website www.laflakaband.com, lists the multitude of songs they play every night they take the stage. The band's versatility has elevated them from humble wedding, dinner party beginnings to the showcase band at Jungle Bar. This summer La Flaka Band threw down an exhilarating tribute to the famous Mexican band Cafe Tacuba at Desperados, a tremendous performance tour they repeated in La
Paz at the Merramente Bar, a week later, during the months of June and July. Another fascinating act which performs at Cabo Blue as a precursor to the main event bands is the Los Huevos. The local rhythm and blues band has been taking the stage in Los Cabos since 1990, when they were first known as Dos Huevos. The two musicians band expanded and grew and thus became Los Huevos. Led by guitarist and singer Kevin Daniel, Dos Huevas has also taken center stage at Cabo Wabo, and he typically has a slew of guest musicians that accompany his jammin' rhythm and blues guitar, that include Dave Larson and Jeff Stanley. The house band at Rips Bar, located in the front patio area of Cabo Wabo, is the rock & roll group known as The Yurok Band who's members are guitarist Ricardo Lara, Cesare Zucolotto (keyboards), Jimmy Barran (bass) and Cesar Camerino (drums). "We're here to play the best rock music in Cabo," states lead singer Tarik Haces. A sentiment shared by Sheri Warren from Portland, Oregon, who echoed, "These guys are awesome. A must see if you go to Cabo." Antonio Garcia, a former self-proclaimed professor of drums at La Casa de Cultura in Morelia, Michoacan called The Yurok Band, "the best band I have heard, during my vacation to Cabo." The Yurok Band has also headlined at Cabo Wabo during March spring break 2015 and occasionally performs at a hotel along the four lane highway corridor; most recently Secrets Resort. At Captain Tony's Bar & Grill, the band Pura Vida plays on Thursday nights, while the group Tienes Fuego takes center stage every Friday evening, both bands are equally talented and each delivers quite an outstanding performance, respectively. Tienes Fuego, (You're On Fire) is by far one of the hippest bands in Cabo. The group is the regular house band at Captain Tony's Restaurant and Bar that plays a dizzying array of hip hop, funk and soul, rhythm and blues and rock & roll; both classic and modern. The group is led by guitarist Gabriel Fuentes. Tienes Fuego also delivers great female vocals by Lizanka Padilla. Jose Manuel Sandoval has the bass, and Alfredo Villanueva is their energetic drummer. Their diverse two and a half to three hour set includes cover songs like Sunshine of Your Love (Cream), The Gambler (Kenny Rogers), Bob Marley's Three Little Birds, Move Over (Janis Joplin), Suds in the Bucket (Sara Evans), Sam Cooke's Bring it on Home and Every Breath You Take by The Police. The youngest group of talented musicians that have hit the Cabo Live Band music scene, is the Val Garcia Band. The five member team, and their high school garage band appearance, is truly a virtuoso unification of solid vocals that is accompanied by a superb sounding blend of phenomenal music. The

Val Garcia Band is also the only band in the Southern Baja California region, that plays songs no other groups dare attempt to include in their respective repertoire of cover songs. The voice of the Val Garcia Band is Valeria Garcia, an attractive young woman who is the driving sound and name of the group. Valeria is backed by the strong performances of Linden Welsh on lead guitar and Benjamin George (rhythm guitar) and Carolina Festugato on percussion. It's been three years since the band made their debut at the San Jose Music Fest and they definitely have come along way in terms of tightening their sound and looking fabulous on stage. A gorgeous and smooth sounding must-see Los Cabos band. Aside from the great food at his restaurant, and the Circuito Cultural Art Festival on the Marina that he created, owner Brian Solomon, also features an entertaining band of musicians at Solomon's Landing Restaurant, known as KY4. The three member group is led by the guitar sounds of Yako D'Rosales and the scintillating vocals of their female front person, Karina Lozano and Daniel Valenzuela on keyboards. The Leones (Lions) Band is a four member family group comprised of three brothers and a friend on keyboards. Phenomenal guitarist, and singer Jair Rivas, is a flashy, superb showman, who extends riffs with his guitar and beautifully performs impressive one handed electricity with his early childhood instrument of choice. With his long-haired, bass-playing brother sharing vocals duties, the Leones Band lives up to the hype of their early success and Mexico City. Jair Rivas, is joined by Leo Rivas and Eliot Rivas and their other musician, Rodi. "This kid is an AMAZING guitarist!," said Michael Howard of Los Angeles, CA., co-founder and partner with Livestream Video Marketing, who added, "Okay, so he's around 30 years old or so now. I met him and his family in Mexico City (where they live) about 15 years ago and he shredded then. Gene Simmons of Kiss saw him playing when he was like 13 years old (at a battle of the bands). He said he thought Jair Rivas was going to be the next Eddie Van Halen." The Leones are the complete rock & roll package, with an explosive electrifying act that is sure to impress. *

Cabo San Lucas Festival
This festival celebrates Saint Luke, the patron saint of Cabo San Lucas. Every October 18th, streets are closed off downtown for a parade. The festival features dancing, music and food vendors, which takes place at the little cute and quaint Amelia Wilkes Plaza, located in front of the Cabo San Lucas Catholic Church . The festival usually includes a top musical performer, the coronation of the San Lucas Festival Queen, and numerous special events that take place over the 4-day long party that occurs every late October. The San Lucas Festival Queen coronation takes place at the Municipal Deportivo Plaza and athletic sports complex where Highway 1 begins the road to El Cerritos and Todos Santos. An event in which the new Los Cabos Mayor will be in attendance, ushering in the new queen.

Todos Santos Nuestra SeĂąora del Pilar Festival
The festival of Nuestra SeĂąora del Pilar, is the big time local affair celebrating the patron saint of Todos Santos; the little magical town located 40 minutes north of Cabo San Lucas. The date is also celebrated as the founding celebration of the city of Todos Santos. While the event is hyped as a Sunday extravaganza, there are activities that take place for four days leading up to the grand finale on Sunday, October 16. Some of the week-long festivities include live music in the plaza, and food, drinks and dancing in the central zocalo, across the street from the historical Catholic church. A parade will take place on Sunday as well, followed by a wonderful horse show, making it an extremely great time for the whole family, located just 30 minutes outside of San Lucas. The name of Our Lady of Pillar is the name given to the blessed Virgin Mary for her miraculous appearance in Zaragoza, Spain during a time in history that Christianity was making its world wide emergence.

As soon as one major fishing tournament ends in Los Cabos, another begins, as Bisbee's Offshore Tournament makes its 12th return of competition that lasts two days of attempts to hook either tuna, dorado or marlin. The average temperature in Cabo during October is somewhere between 85-90 degrees, making average water temperatures of 75 degrees, ideal for this historically friendly and fierce competition. Last year's 2015 tournament produced 95 teams that comprised of 628 anglers. 139 Marlin were caught during the competition, and the big $621, 350 purse winner was Mike Timon of the Knot Workin' team with his 161.5 pound Yellowfin Tuna. Ryan Sayer of Coast Wide Sportsfishing brought aboard the biggest fish of the tourney with his 247 lbs. Blue Marlin. CABO PIMP AND 'HO COSTUME BALL
The Cabo San Lucas 19th Annual Pimp and 'Ho Ball returns for its wild and sexy party that takes place every year just before Halloween. The general admission ladies fee of $50 USD pales in comparison to the $150 dollar ticket price for all men. The upscale R-rated atmosphere has attracted such Hollywood luminaries as Sean P. Diddy Combs, Floyd Mayweather along with dozen former Playboy Bunny playmates. There's also a lucrative $1,000.00 USD cash prize awarded to the three sexiest 'Ho costume contestants. The Pimp and 'Ho Ball has a strict no costume, no entry policy, that is enforced with no exceptions. Anyone wanting ''in'' must have a full-on ''Pimp'' or ''Ho'' costume. Halloween costumes (which are not “Pimp” or “Ho” themed) are not permitted either, such as vampires, superheroes, and/or blood or gory themed costumes. With the closure of last year's host location Baja Junkie Nightclub Bar, details of this year's Pimp and 'Ho Costume Ball were not released publicly and the whereabouts of this year's extravaganza will be released during an unknown late October announcement. Always saving the best for last, the Bisbee family will hold their 36th annual, granddaddy of them all, Black & Blue Fishing Tournament, from Tuesday, October 18 to Saturday, October 22. Long considered, the world's richest billfish tournament, teams arrive from all over the planet, with eyes and fishing poles clearly set on winning the more than $4 million US dollars in prize money. It has historically been the Bisbee's Black & Blue that brings in world-record breaking catches, which have reached and surpassed 800 pounds. The event also packs the San Lucas Marina with vendors and exhibits that make for a great festive time. The Black & Blue remains one of the world’s largest fishing tournaments. Last year, Tyler Squier hooked the biggest fish of his life early Friday afternoon, calculating prize categories and payouts was the last thing on his mind. Squier was simply using every muscle he could to conquer the frantic blue marlin on the end of his 130-pound test line. Fortunately for the Thunder Bay, Ontario angler and Team Catching a Buzz, the fish would surrender after a strenuous battle lasting 35 minutes. When it was finally hoisted aloft at the scales, the 500-pound mark would vault the team into first-place for the threeday event. “That was tough,” Squire said afterwards. “I couldn’t believe we had a chance. We’re just five buddies from Ontario who decided, hey, let’s do this, let’s fish this tournament. The world’s biggest triathlon returns to Cabo San Lucas. The Los Cabos Ironman 70.3. The world-renown Ironman race consists of a 2.4-mile swim in the Sea of Cortez in Palmilla Bay, a 112mile bike ride along the four-lane Transpeninsular Highway and through San Jose del Cabo, and ends with a grueling 26.2 mile marathon distance run along the corridor between Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo. Last year's 2015 overall winner was Francisco Serrano of Mexico, who covered the race in 4 hours, 2 minutes and 46 seconds. Britain's James Hadley was a close second for the UK with a time of 4:03:45. Cody Beals of Canada nabbed 3rd overall in 4:06:29 and was followed by four USA Americans; Chris Leiferman (4:08:15), Matt Lieto (4:10:20), Chris Baird (4:10:44) and Chris Bagg (4:11:18). Davide Giardini of Italy reached the Top 10 with his 8th place finish of 4:12:17. The women's race champion was Magali Tisseyre (Canada) 4:24:28, who crossed the finish line in 17th place overall. Tisseyre was followed by runner-up Carrie Lester (Australia) 4:31:45, 3rd place Ricarda Lisk (Germany) 4:36:34, Melanie McQuaid (Canada) 4:42:40 and Carly Johann (USA) 4:43:39. MARKET UPDATE: Cabo’s High Season Returns! By Blake Harrington
Traditionally in Los Cabos, we look forward to October each year as the return of our High Season approaches. As the heat and humidity leave, the visitors to Cabo return. However, this year, it seems as if there never was a “low-season”! Breaking all sorts of tourism records, Cabo’s September was busier than ever. This continues to prove that Cabo remains Mexico’s top destination for Americans and Canadians, at any time of year. With more flights, more tourists, and no slow months, our Real Estate market has also shown incredible movement in the right direction. As I had mentioned in my July Market Update, real estate sales in 2016 are now up 21% vs 2015. With our busy September, I’m confident we will see this number trend higher and higher as we get closer to 2017. What we can expect in October and November is the addition of more inventory to our market.
As I’ve touched on in the past in this column, many sellers purposely pull their homes off the market in August and September because of the low season. We also have some exciting new developments coming onto the market like Solaz, the multiple options at Chileno Bay, Querencia’s beach club towers, and the addition of the RitzCarleton Residences in Puerto Los Cabos. New inventory means new options that are sure to amaze. There’s no doubt Cabo is booming. Real Estate buyer’s confidence is at an all-time high as Cabo continues to be the top tourist destination in Mexico. Our market statistics continue to show promise that we are trending in the right direction and for a period of time that gives us a good sample size. 2 days on the MLS, 7 tour requests, and 1 offer to purchase “sight unseen.” This is not the Cabo Real Estate Market of yesteryear where the average time on market was 404 days. Historically, August and September were the months where brokers and agents could choose to travel for ten weeks while getting re-energized for the unofficial start of high season on October 15th. My colleagues and I could take trips North or, even better, go explore mainland Mexico while no one would realize that we were gone. This year we are lucky if we can spend a Sunday morning on the beach before getting back to work fielding tour requests and questions from clients about available properties. The numbers speak for themselves. Summer 2015 (June, July, and August) saw 42 homes sell. Compare that with Summer 2016 and MLS data shows 75 homes selling, nearly double. September 2016 numbers have not been released as of the writing of this month’s column but based on the conversations I have had with my fellow MLS AMPI Realtors during showings and contract negotiations, September ‘16 will be one for the record books. Activity levels in Los Cabos typically see an increase like the one we are currently experiencing when the Canadian dollar strengthens and the US economy is booming. Although the US stock market is hovering near record high levels, there is another factor that is boosting investment in our area… the Citizens of Mexico. For many years picturesque locations like Tulum, Acapulco, Puerto Escondido, and Cancun were the premier destinations for local family vacations. Lately mainland families are discovering how perfect Cabo is too. Believe it or not, most Mexicans do not think of Cabo San Lucas or the Baja as even being a part of Mexico! In the same vein that many US Citizens disregard Hawaii as a state or Puerto Rico as a US territory, the Baja has been cast-off as some place in the middle of nowhere. In fact, I have received more calls from Mexican buyers over the last six months than US or Canadian buyers combined! CURRENCY EXCHANGE Dollars are accepted almost everywhere and you will get your change in pesos. The exchange rate varies every day, but some places have a set rate.
ATMs - The easiest way to get pesos is to simply withdraw money from an ATM in Los Cabos. Bank ATMs give the daily exchange rate (best possible rate). Examples include Banorte, Bancomer, Santander, Banamex, and HSBC. Non-bank ATMs located in the street will charge higher fees. Some ATMs only give you dollars, some only pesos and some give you the option to withdraw both. Pay close attention to what currency you’re withdrawing and try to get as much cash as possible in one transaction to avoid paying high fees.
CASH OR CARD? Visa, Mastercard and American Express credit cards are generally accepted, but you often run into cash only places. Always ask beforehand and carry cash. Your bank will most likely charge you international transaction fees if you pay with your card.
GROCERIES - In Cabo San Lucas, Wal-Mart and Costco are good options and easy to get to. You can always find a taxi outside of these stores. San José has a Wal-Mart and Mega. If you just need to grab something quickly, OXXO stores are small, reasonably priced convenient stores located all over town.

Driving in Mexico might be intimidating, but if you just go with the muddled flow, you will realize that there is some organization within the chaos. If you are pulled over by local police for committing a driving infraction, the standard procedure is for them to take your Driver’s License. You will then have to go to the Police Station to pay your ticket and pick-up your license. There are two types of gasoline: Magna, which is regular, and Premium. Lleno (pronounced ye-no) means full. Major credit cards are accepted. Tipping the gas station attendant around $10.00 pesos is customary. There is a toll road that takes you from the airport to Cabo San Lucas or to the Todos Santos highway. By taking this road you avoid the taxi and shuttle traffic on the main highway.
