Protect your skin

Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Apply it generously to all exposed areas of your skin at least 15 minutes before sun exposure, and reapply every two hours or more frequently if sweating or swimming. Additionally, cover your skin with lightweight, tightly woven clothing that covers your arms, legs, and torso. Opt for wide-brimmed hats that shade your face, neck, and ears, and don't forget to wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from UV radiation. Sunburn is no joke!

Stay Hydrated

The most obvious but often neglected tip is to drink an adequate amount of water throughout the day. Carry a reusable water bottle and make a conscious effort to sip water regularly, even if you don't feel thirsty. Tap water isn’t safe to drink in Los Cabos and water fountains aren't as common. Be prepared to either ask waiters to refill your bottle at restaurants or buy bottled water. Pay attention to signs of dehydration such as dry mouth, thirst, fatigue, dizziness! A trip to the ER for dehydration could put a damper on your vacation!

Whether you're a first-time visitor or a seasoned traveler returning for more, proper preparation is the key to unlocking an unforgettable summer experience in Los Cabos. In this article, we will provide you with a guide to help you make the most of your summer getaway. So, grab your sun hat, pack your swimsuit, and get ready to discover everything you need to know to prepare for an incredible summer in Los Cabos.

Stay flexible

Summer travel often involves increased traffic, flight delays, and other unexpected challenges. Stay flexible and patient, allowing extra time for potential delays or changes to your itinerary. This is also important when planning activities. Things happen and plans change! Staying flexible is a great way to try to make the most of your time in Cabo. You’re already in paradise, embrace the adventure!

Stay active

Take advantage of the coastal setting by engaging in beach activities like swimming, beach volleyball, or beachside yoga. Walking or jogging along the shore is also a great way to stay active while enjoying the beautiful scenery. You could also try water sports, such as snorkeling, paddleboarding, kayaking, or even surfing.

Embrace the culture Interact with locals and learn about their way of life. Strike up conversations, ask for recommendations, and show genuine interest in their culture and traditions. Another great way to embrace the culture is by indulging in the local flavors by trying traditional Mexican dishes and regional specialties. You could also purchase locally-made handicrafts, artwork, or souvenirs from artisans. This not only allows you to take home unique mementos but also supports the local economy and helps preserve traditional craftsmanship.

Fundraising and donations:

Support charities financially by organizing fundraisers or making monetary donations. Consider hosting events, initiating crowdfunding campaigns, or encouraging others to contribute to the cause. Even small donations can have a meaningful impact when combined with others.

Raise awareness:

It all begins that one morning you step out of your home and feel the change in the atmosphere. There’s no breeze. And there’s a warmth that wraps around your body and reminds you that there’s a beach nearby awaiting you. The radiant and unforgiving Baja sun announces that summer is here. Perhaps a week before it had been windy, and it feels as though the weather changed in the blink of an eye. As you get in your car, the seat might burn your bottom and the A/C takes longer to work its magic, so you roll your windows down until it does. On the Carretera Transpeninsular, you start spotting pickup trucks with surfboards tied to the back, speeding past you to catch a couple of waves before work. To some, summer means higher electricity bills and two showers a day to stay fresh. To others, it means vacation time. To me, summer means longer days and a slower pace. To me, this endless summer is home.

Growing up in a small town known for its year round sunny days can shape you as a person. We were raised in a town where people pay hundreds, if not thousands of dollars to vacation. Having the beach within walking distance of my home has always made me feel like a billionaire. When I was little, on special occasions, my mom would pick us up from school with the beach bags packed in the trunk. We’d change into our bathing suits in the car and go to the beach instead of doing homework. Before all the nightclubs and fancy hotels, Medano Beach was our backyard. No matter how much sunscreen my mom applied, our skin showed who we were. We were children who grew up by the sea, and we had the tan lines to prove it. When we’d visit my family in the city of Guadalajara, they’d be appalled when they saw us walking towards them in the airport wearing flip flops. Flip-flops? In the city? If only they knew my feet would always feel trapped in closed toe shoes. They belonged, and always will belong, bare and in the sand. Years later, the last school bell of the year

16

would proclaim the arrival of summer. As a kid this meant pool parties, trips to Los Barriles, and what felt like infinite days on the beach.

As a teenager, I’d wear my bathing suit under my school uniform. Skipping class to catch waves was normal for the cool kids. But I wasn’t that cool, so I waited for classes to be over to jump in my car and drive to El Tule with my friends for a quick dip on the days we didn’t have soccer practice. We’d have to be home before sunset. Back then, summer meant bonfires and flings.

But then it was time for college. It's common for locals to leave town after graduation. Most of us end up going to either Guadalajara, Monterrey, Tijuana or Mexico City. We moved to these cities in search of better opportunities. I remember looking at college brochures and realizing how small Cabo felt and how big the world really is. After a tearful goodbye, I put on closed toe shoes and left.

Most of us would fly back when the semester was over. Back then, summer was a time for reconnecting with high school friends at the Nowhere Bar, drama, and love stories. Being a young adult in Cabo is fun. The same way Medano Beach felt like my backyard when I was little, the party scene in downtown Cabo was the new playground.

The flight back to the city was packed with familiar faces. Nothing would make me feel more powerful than walking back onto my college campus after a long summer home with a perfect tan, sunkissed hair, and incredible memories.

As our early twenties turned into late twenties, things changed. The pandemic found us Cabo Kids scattered around the world and brought us home. It made me reconsider everything: my values, my plans, and my goals. I remembered where my feet belonged. After I received a job offer at the local radio station, I decided to move home.

Many of my friends did the same, and

for a while, as summer arrived, we felt like kids again. Before the world settled into this new, post-pandemic pace, we’d work remotely from a pool or the beach. We’d end our work days with trips to Acapulquito, where some would surf and others, like me, would read or gossip on the beach.

With September just around the corner, we’d say goodbye to summer and hello to peak season. This meant shorter and busier days for the locals, as one way or another, all of our jobs are related to tourism. We were taught since we were very little to work hard and be welcoming to the visitors and to make sure our English is perfect, as we are all tour guides of sorts. Flights filled with Americans remind us that it's time to roll up our sleeves and work, and they also represent abundance.

The pace picks up, and the beach feels far away because we are occupied with real estate or timeshares to sell, weddings to plan, houses to decorate, or articles to write. Medano Beach is far from the barren, idyllic beach it used to be. It's filled with life and fun but it's different. We go camping once a year- if we’re lucky- and just thinking about drinking a jarrita at Nowhere Bar gives me a headache. Leaving the office after the sun has set isn’t what I pictured my life in Cabo would be like.

One day, I woke up and realized my feet hadn't touched the sand in weeks. It's still there. All we need is for things to slow down a bit to be able to enjoy it. And then it happens. Days start to feel a little longer and the sunsets more magical. I feel my friends getting restless, pitching our favorite summer plans in the group chat. From my terrace, I see people carrying surfboards, and I think about finishing up this article so I can grab my bikini and head to Las Viudas for a swim. It’s still light out. These are the clues that my favorite season is here and a reminder that it doesn't ever really end. This endless summer is home.

no surprise that tourists and locals alike have fallen head over heels for this sport.

Let's not forget the international community that has made Baja their home. While the majority of expats come from the United States and Canada, there are also individuals from Europe, Asia, and other parts of the world. Pickleball fosters a strong sense of community and camaraderie, making it the perfect activity for foreigners looking to make new friends!

Learning is relatively easy, and the rules are straightforward, making it accessible to beginners and seasoned players alike. This makes it enjoyable for people from diverse backgrounds and age groups.

Pickleball's adaptability and lowimpact nature have also contributed to its skyrocketing popularity. It's a sport that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and fitness levels, making it accessible to everyone. The emergence of organized tournaments, both locally and internationally, has added a competitive edge and fueled the growth of pickleball in Los Cabos. Courts and facilities have

sprung up all over the region, catering to the growing demand and ensuring that players have top-notch spaces to indulge in their passion.

But perhaps the most remarkable thing about pickleball is its ability to bring people together. It transcends language barriers and cultural differences, forging friendships and creating a vibrant community of pickleball enthusiasts.

The laughter, the cheers, and the shared moments of triumph and defeat—they all contribute to the unique magic that surrounds this sport.

Whether you're a seasoned player or someone looking to try something new, don't miss out on the pickleball fever sweeping through Los Cabos. So grab your paddle and join the excitement—pickleball awaits you in this sun-soaked paradise!

A eco-friendly TOURIST 7 Golden Rules To Be an

cacti desert surrounded by calm, crystal-blue waters on one side, rough ocean tides on the other, and flooded with sunlight 350 days a year. This is Baja Sur, a land that boasts 42% of its territory as protected natural areas and welcomes three million tourists every year, with an estimated increase of 15% more arrivals in 2023.

It goes without saying that these natural wonders are the main sources of health and wealth of our region and soon to become the mainstay of the marketing strategies of all stakeholders of the tourism industry.

“Embrace sustainability” has become the slogan of the Los Cabos Board of Tourism. “Go green and be eco-friendly” is the motto of hotels and resorts investing in technology to save water and energy as well as procedures to improve waste management and avoid the use of disposable food and beverage containers.

Local and federal authorities, hotel chains, developers, service providers, small businesses, and educational institutions have teamed up to grant Cabo the leading role in sustainable tourism in Mexico. This effort is recognized by the international press and has yielded the desired results.

Twenty-five beaches have been awarded the “blue flag” certification due to their high standard of safety, accessibility, cleanliness, and respectful management of their ecosystem. Here, trash is not a big issue anymore thanks to the staff of hotels, beach clubs, and the local coordination of the Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone (Zofemat) who regularly pick up the garbage left by “distracted” beachgoers. Nonetheless, it is worth remembering that single-use plastics, once they get into the ocean, are constantly being broken down into fragments and swallowed by marine species causing their death.

Due to such eco-friendly initiatives, regular visitors as well as first-timers tend to sit back and pay less attention to their behavior. Here are seven golden rules shared with us by María Jossué Navarro Sánchez, Director of the National Commission on Natural Protected Areas (CONANP) in Los Cabos.

1. Protect your skin and the ocean life. Use a biodegradable sunblock when swimming and snorkeling. These kinds of sunscreens do not contain chemicals that damage the submarine flora and the reproductive system of fish.

2. Do not feed, chase, or harass the animals. The iconic sea lion colony at the Arch is a spectacular attraction, and it is not uncommon to spot visitors

tempting these charismatic animals with bait to get them close enough for a one-of-a-kind selfie. Respect the marine fauna in its habitat and do not tip those individuals who offer this kind of dangerous photo-service. Also avoid feeding the fish anything, including bread crumbs.

3. Take it home, but in a picture. Another widespread malpractice reported in Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park is breaking off pieces of coral from the reef as souvenirs. How dare you? That is North America’s largest, most diverse coral reef and a UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization) World Heritage Site. Take pictures if you want, but do not touch or remove marine flora and fauna.

Leave no trace of your campfire. Lighting campfires is only permitted in designated areas. Be careful and make sure you put it out completely and without leaving ash or coal residue. Always follow the tour guide’s instructions.

5. Respect the turtle season. All beach activities must be carried out carefully from June to February, which is the sea turtle spawning and nesting season. Moreover, nature lovers can help release the baby turtles and contribute to their conservation.

6. Stay on the trail. When riding in the desert, choose a responsible driver, one who makes sure you have lots of fun but at no risk to the environment and its inhabitants. When driving off-road vehicles, follow the guide´s instructions and do not leave the trails. Respect the desert plants, many of which are endemic and play a crucial role in the ecosystem. Again, do not chase or harass land animals.

7. Turn off the faucet when not in use. Last but not least, be aware that being in Los Cabos, a desert-like region, the scarce water supply is a huge problem for the local community. Show your solidarity by turning off the tap while grooming. This simple gesture saves 1 ½ gallons of water while brushing your teeth and up to 25 gallons while showering.

In conclusion, a sustainable tourism industry is essential to our region to preserve all those natural resources that put Los Cabos in the top ranking of the best tourist destinations in Mexico. Responsible national and foreign vacationers can help in supporting this course of action because sustainability is not just a trump card to play. It is the one and only possible option in our hands to ensure a future for the next generations of local residents and our always-welcome visitors.

Answers Your Design Questions

How do I design a single room that is our kitchen, dining and living area?

Many homes in Los Cabos reflect our need for open spaces drenched in sunlight that open onto patios and pool decks with stunning views (if we are lucky). How we design and layout our multi-use spaces is also the key to how much we will enjoy using and living in them during the day and at night.

Define each area yet make them feel part of one space by cleverly using lighting, furniture placement and area rugs. It seems as if all our homes, whatever the size, have areas in common. Kitchen, dining and living. When all areas are in one room it's important that lighting defines these areas yet also holds them together.

Lighting Is Everything

Recessed ceiling lights are designed to shine light down onto the floor or whatever is sitting underneath them. They light the way and provide a great indirect lighting source. These usually are installed during construction and provide an adequate source of indirect light only. If your ceiling is drywall it's easy to add lights. If it is poured concrete, it will be a little messier as the line needs to be chipped away.

Kitchen islands need hanging pendants typically 2-3 and in larger homes 4-6. The size of pendant shade and material is important. The height from the base of the fixture to the counter should be out of the line of vision, typically 72" off the floor. Glass shades are the lightest and disperse light in all directions and should always be placed on a dimmer.

The very Cabo rattan shades provide a sexy filtered light source that gently exudes soft light that focuses light down to the counter. Metal shades only allow light to shine down and are good to use in an area that has lots of other down lights or an area that requires less light. I personally stay away from kitchen pendants that have solid shades as they only allow light to shine down as they miss the chance.

When living and dining are side by side placing two of the same larger chandeliers in the center of each is a great way to unify the room. Often recessed lights do not cast light where you need, so having a central light source offers you the option when you need more light, Area rugs under a seating area not only define the area they provide comfort under barefoot when sitting. Rugs are an excellent chance to bring some color and coziness to the center of a room. Avoid placing rugs under dining tables. It is a trip hazard! They cut too much into a space and in general are a no no.
