EDITOR Jessica Williams

Jessica is an author and freelance writer with a background in broadcast communications. She loves to play with words and would truly excel as an editor if she could just accept that putting two spaces after a period was no longer correct. She cannot and will not accept that. She lives in Swift Current, Saskatchewan in a jungle of houseplants with her family and small canine overlord.

MANAGER Kirstin Patzer

As the driving force behind Three Strands Wedding Design and the SW Wedding Expo here in southwest Saskatchewan, Kirstin knows more than a thing or two about weddings. As a wedding planner by day she spends her time sharing all that knowledge with couples as they navigate the world of vendors, venues and deposits so what better next step than creating a publication to bring that all together? Right now Kirstin is launching the third annual SW Wedding Expo while she takes time away from us here at Details to soak up some maternity leave with her newest sweetheart. This leaves me, Candace, unattended and excited to write this bio for her full of glowing praise that she won’t be able to change!

DESIGNER Candace Schwartz

Love, happiness, petals and lace... if you asked me to name the thing I love most about weddings, you would be in for quite the conversation because I couldn’t choose just one. This Saskatchewan based - and focussed - wedding magazine is our way of sharing the many beautiful, original, and outstanding options Saskatchewan has to offer local brides & grooms. So let’s make 2021 a year of collaboration and bring out the best in one another - both vendors and couples.

STAFF WRITER River

River hails from the prairies. Their house is decorated with the finest of bric-a-brac and antimacassers from travels across Canada with their pet flamingo, Roderigo. River's closet boasts an unnatural amount of neon which goes well with their appreciation of fine wine (the kind that comes in a box with a convenient valve). River is a wealth of knowledge and has graciously agreed to write our advice column, stating simply that everyone should have the wedding of their dreams.

Hello from all of us here at Details Wedding Magazine! This publication has been created out of a love for love in all shapes and sizes. We want to appeal to all genders and age groups across this beautiful province bringing advice and information to you, the reader. We want to hear from couples and vendors telling us what they want to see or what they have to share. We couldn’t do this without the support we’re seeing and we’re glad you’re joining us on this adventure - we can’t wait to hear from you!

PLANNING & INSPIRATION

THINKING ABOUT GETTING ENGAGED? Congratulations! If you’re reading this then you’re probably in a relationship and approaching the engagement stage of your adventure, and that is something to be celebrated! Whichever side of the proposal you find yourself on, you have a few things to think of before you and your partner begin the task of planning a wedding and a life together. We will focus on the practical to-do items that need consideration instead of the relationship side of things, since we lack the qualifications for those. When polling couples that we have worked with in the past on tid-bits of wisdom they wished they knew before planning their wedding day, the most often mentioned item is how shocked they were by the up-front financial obligation required. “So many vendors require 50% deposits upfront to reserve their services – you aren’t just saving up for the big day, but for the moment you start planning. – KH” and another reader, AP, said that she wished she had asked more vendors if the deposit was refundable in the event of cancellation. Nobody could predict the pandemic and its impact on their wedding plans. Having funds available is often overlooked as couples expect to save up for the wedding day itself, not realizing that a large portion of the funds need to be in place before they even start making phone calls. With many Saskatchewan weddings taking place in small towns, farm yards and villages, wedding vendors serving large areas find themselves in high demand and stretched thin during our warmest seasons. To ensure the date of your choice is reserved with the vendors you love, you should start making inquiries at least a year in advance. This means that ideally those funds would be in place as early as twelve to eighteen months before your celebration is set to take place.

6

The 2017 Ipsos poll The Real Cost of Love – Weddings in Canada concluded that the average cost of a wedding in Canada is $8,937, and that 61% of couples are paying for the wedding themselves. A good portion of that is due before or on the wedding day itself. Don’t let this crush your excitement though. Wedding vendors know this is a surprise to most couples and they have deposits and payment plans in place for this reason. While the final payment is due on or before your wedding date, most vendors also allow for instalments that can be made at your own pace. Most have tiers and packages that range from basic to all inclusive packages as well so you can choose to spend more on the things that matter most to you, and cut a little in the areas that you aren’t as passionate about. After the financial considerations come the logistics. Where do you want to have the wedding? Will it be large or small? Are you a bright and playful couple wanting a big party, or a quiet and settled pair wanting a small ceremony? There are so many options for your wedding today that you shouldn’t have to include anything that doesn’t matter to the two of you. Talk about these things before you find yourself with 300 guests, wishing you could just be alone together in your backyard. Or on a mountainside alone, wishing you were surrounded by more family and friends. It’s worth really talking with each other before you start so you have a vision going into those first steps. From there everything else is just details. Important details, don’t get me wrong, but just details. You will be together, wildly in love, where you want to be with the people that matter most, and whatever you decide after that won’t make or break your marriage.

PLANNING & INSPIRATION

VIRTUAL WEDDINGS One of the things I love most about the wedding planning process is the opportunity to make things unique and special for both partners. Wedding hashtags are a great way to share moments from the night with family and friends across multiple platforms – bringing new technology together with old traditions. Today, within pandemic restrictions, most ceremonies are being broadcast virtually for family and friends to enjoy and this opens up a whole new world of inclusion opportunities. I recommend sending out traditional invitations with a website link or page setup to host instructions and suggestions. Here are a few of the things we love to see in a wedding website visit: -

A link to the live ceremony. Guests may not be able to attend in person but would love to see those sweet I Dos.

-

A personalized message from the two of you welcoming everyone and thanking them for being a part of your day.

-

A link to a place where they can upload videos (Google Drive is a great option) wishing you well and sending their love.

-

Digital sign in book to leave well wishes, or send a small card in your invitation that they can fill out with advice or a message and return to you.

-

8

Drink and snack suggestions. Have fun creating a custom drink for the day! Make it fun and family friendly and have them post pictures online celebrating with it using your custom hashtag.

That brings me to custom hashtags. There are a few considerations when choosing your hashtag, even if you are one of those lucky couples whose combined names play on each other in a fun way. -

Make it unique by including your date and/or wedding location along with your name(s).

-

Include an inside joke or family story to set yourself apart from the crowd. Everyone loves a good pun!

-

Search first to see what comes up before sending the details out. From inspiration to things you’ll want to avoid, a good search online will give you a lot of information.

-

Numbers can be used in hashtags, however spaces and special characters won’t work.

-

If all else fails and you can’t find a combination you love, there are random generators that specialize in wedding hashtags. https://www.ewedding.com/freewedding-hashtag-generator/

-

Start using your website and hashtags right away! Get engagement pictures up there, keep loved ones updated, ask friends to post pictures of the two of you, and let your friends and followers know how the celebration is taking shape as you progress.

-

Ask your family and friends to post any pictures they take throughout your wedding day on social media using the hashtag, and don’t forget to pass it along to your wedding vendors. They are posting and sharing as well, and it is so nice to search the full collection of the images in one place.

PLANNING & INSPIRATION

PLANNING WITH COVID RESTRICTIONS It’s obvious to all of us that we’re living in a different world right now, and it may be this way for a long time to come. What isn’t obvious yet is the lasting impact this will have on the way we gather and celebrate. Weddings are small and intimate now, but going forward will couples continue to plan large celebrations only downsizing at the last possible moment or will they plan small and wait to celebrate when it is safe to gather? The answer seems to be somewhere in the middle. Trying to plan ahead more than a few weeks can leave much up in the air about how your day will look - do you plan for the current restrictions, or plan smaller just in case? Maybe larger, with optimism that things will start returning to normal? I have talked to couples who are going both routes. Right now most of the couples that I work with are postponing 2021 summer weddings to 2022 much faster than I am booking new couples. I expect 2021 will be much like last year, with a handful of intimate weddings and elopements, but far slower than years past for weddings in general. The two safest options, for now, are to plan small or postpone. If the idea of an intimate wedding with 10 - 20 guests appeals to you this may be the best route to take. You and your few best friends, parents, and siblings can have a fantastic day celebrating together without worrying about the production a big crowd would bring. You could

find a quiet place in the woods with a cabin for two or a backyard ceremony on the family farm, but wherever you choose, the day is about the two of you and the life you’re building together. There will be time to celebrate another day when we can raise our glasses and dance the night away with everyone we hold dear in our hearts. If an intimate day together isn’t your style, postponing may be the smart choice right now. My calendar is booking up a year ahead of the usual schedule and it is getting more difficult to find dates for both reschedules and new bookings. If you wait until the fall you may have a difficult time getting your postponed date with all of your preferred vendors. It is a gamble either way since we may have lighter restrictions by the fall, so you have to decide which is most important; waiting to see what happens closer to your date, betting on the chance that we may be able to have events with 250 people this year with your current vendor bookings, or rescheduling now securing those vendors and having an extra year to plan. It’s not fair, and there is no right answer, but it is something the two of you have to decide on at some point. Weigh the options against where you are in your lives and what your priorities are for your day, and definitely make use of your vendors. Ask about their policies and opinions beacuse we are all wishing you all the best in the planning process this year!

THE QUIET MAGIC OF ELOPING BY JESSICA WILLIAMS You and your fiancé, your two best friends and the marriage commissioner have gathered in a postcard picture landscape. It is a small group of the closest of friends and one additional person; a photographer who has made it their job to remain unnoticed. You are standing in a stunning field of wildflowers, or a forest, or by a creek or lake. The afternoon sunlight twinkles through the leaves and glances off the crystal-clear water as the wind rustles the grass. You look into each other’s eyes and know that you are the world to one another. The tender moments between you and your partner are uninterrupted by additional guests and their throat clearings, coughs and shuffling feet. It is deep and intense because it is just you without any distractions and without having to put on a show. In some ways, an elopement is a wedding at its most pure, stripped down to the most important thing: the couple and their love. Often couples think that eloping is a destination wedding on a white sand beach, or running off to Las Vegas, or popping down to the courthouse and waiting in line to say your quick vows before getting on with your day. While those are all possibilities, that is far from the whole story. Eloping in Saskatchewan has simple requirements; a marriage license, a marriage commissioner and two witnesses. The inclusion of other elements is for you to decide. Do you want fancy attire? Do you want flowers or decorations? Or do you want to simply be surrounded by the stunning décor of your environment?

12

If you have spent any time in Saskatchewan, you will have had your breath taken away by the vast natural beauty. The stretches of fields and rolling hills in the south, the deep wooded forests and abundant lakes of the north, the majesty of Grasslands National Park, the marvel of the Great Sandhills. Even a simple sunset of red and gold in the Land of Living Skies from your backyard can be the spectacular backdrop to your special day. Eloping in Saskatchewan can be as complex or simple as you choose. With the natural beauty of the province doing much of the heavy lifting in your wedding planning, you and your partner can suddenly be free of the extensive time and financial commitments that are often tied to wedding planning. No huge guest list means no seating plans to agonize over, no giant venue to source, no favours to order, no beverages to budget for. A meal for four at a quiet upscale restaurant is significantly less expensive than a meal for 200. Suddenly, your time and money can be put towards your life together. Eloping may not have been the wedding you imagined as a child, but it may be the fairytale day you will remember forever as an adult. Because ultimately, your wedding is about you and your partner sharing your love with each other.

An Interview with

We’re Derek and Kaitlyn Neustaeter. We’re proud prairie folk from Saskatchewan who have lived abroad and enjoy traveling the world, but found that our hearts always leads us back to the land of living skies. The idea to start Life in Action Weddings was born from our passion for helping people and all things camera related - both of which intensely interest us. We officially started Life in Action in 2012, though we’ve had a camera in our hands since our childhood. When we first started our business, Kaitlyn was working within social work, and Derek was a journeyman heavy duty mechanic, so if you had told us that one day we would both be full time filmmakers and photographers, we might not have believed you! However, throughout the years, we’ve gotten to work with couples all over Western Canada and what was once our passion has now also become our full time careers! We know it’s cliche to say, but we LOVE our job. We love how no two weddings are the same, the dynamics in friendships and families, and how two souls can find one another and fall madly in love. Using our cameras as tools to paint stories of love, friendship, and family on the best day of a couple’s life is a privilege we don’t take lightly, and we are incredibly thankful for it. 1. Why should a couple book a professional videographer/photographer? I’ve heard a few wedding professionals call wedding videography/photography a “legacy investment” and we feel like this a great way to view it. The connection between sound, sight and your memories is amazing, and your video and photos are what will stand the test of time well into future generations. There are a lot of emotions and excitement during a wedding day that Continued on pg. 16

can be so hard to bottle up and absorb, so it gives real peace of mind to have a professional there to capture it all. We’ve often heard from the couples that their video captured little moments that they didn’t even realize were occurring! Having a professional videographer/ photographer at your wedding gives you peace of mind that you’ll have lasting images and audio of the people you love, while your guests get to sit back, relax, and celebrate you! 2. What is your favourite wedding trend at the moment? Kaitlyn + Derek: There’s a big movement towards “emotion over perfection” and “authentic” imagery. The big smiles, little chuckles, and soft looks that come from natural moments are usually our favourite images from a wedding, so it really excites us that more and more couples are looking for a little less perfect posing and more towards guided natural moments. Engagement sessions as well are becoming more about a couple’s personality, homes, and shared hobbies, and less on the perfect location. When it comes right down to it, we’re storytellers so emotions, intimacy, and personality are at the top of our list when it comes to images, so this movement is aaaamazing!

Now that weddings are at the mercy of Covid-19 restrictions, a bright spot in the midst of all the stress that comes with planning in the middle of a pandemic is small, intimate weddings. We love getting to know couples and their immediate loved ones more closely, and the quieter wedding day allows for a longer creative session and more opportunity to try different poses and photo locations during the wedding day. Couples have been so creative in the ways they are still able to include their friends and families (including live-streaming, using local restaurants for reception venues, and even wedding drive bys) and the minimalistic weddings are allowing the opportunity to really focus on what’s really important to the couple. Kaitlyn + Derek: our runner up would be spontaneous toasts before a family supper. These types of toasts are so intimate and less formal, and really add so much emotion to a wedding day. 3. If you could give one piece of advice to the bride-tobe, what would it be? A nice backdrop behind the main microphone/podium at your reception is often overlooked, but can hugely impact

the look of your video and images for your toasts. It can be as simple as stringing some lights along the back wall, extending your head table backdrop, or just even ensuring there are no distracting objects (such as cords, projectors, etc.). The backdrop behind the head table is often considered and planned for, but including the backdrop for your toasts into your planning can bring your video and images to the next level.

A Letter From Your Photographer My name is Candace and I am a wedding photographer based out of Swift Current here in southwest Saskatchewan. I have been shooting weddings for eight years, and in those years I have gathered plenty of knowledge that I know could help make your wedding photos easier. I want to share some of my biggest tips with couples who are planning their wedding day.

While most of us can create both styles to some degree, you won’t get the best work we are capable of if we’re trying to focus on checking off a list to create a style that we aren’t excited about as opposed to using our creativity in the moment. It’s better to find a photographer you love and let them create those kinds of images they love to produce.

Before You Book

Another aspect to consider is whether they work alone or with a partner/second shooter. I work with a partner for a few different reasons, but the two biggest are:

Tips for Booking Your Photographer Before you book your photographer, sit down and really look at their images and their style. In my opinion this is just as important as deciding if they fit into your budget. What is it about the pictures on their sites and in their portfolios that you love? Is it just the colour and tone? Or their personality when reading their social media captions? How about the way the couples are interacting in their photos? This part is an important one: some photographers pose their couples and control the movements of their hands and body, asking them to stay in position or move carefully as directed in a very classic traditional look. In recent years a lot of photographers have shifted to using prompts or activities to help guide couples to interact with each other while documenting as you laugh and play naturally. That documentary style is the one I love most but both have their strengths and both yield very different results. Figuring out which style you are drawn to can help you in choosing which photographer to collaborate with for your engagement and wedding photos.

1. Backups. If my camera gear is stolen or damaged, we have a separate set of memory cards from the day, or if we’re only half way through shooting we have cameras to continue on to the next part of the day. It wouldn’t be ideal, but we have backups of our backups so not all would be lost. 2. Our different vantage points and angles compliment each other into one cohesive gallery that is delivered to you. One of my favourite parts of the day is going home to upload everything and seeing all the wonderful moments my partner has captured that I didn’t even see! Planning Ahead Your Wedding Day Timeline There are a few big things to consider when it comes to your wedding day timeline and photographs. As the sun moves through the sky the quality of light we see in images will change drastically. Mid afternoon the shadows Continued on pg. 20

“Before you book your photographer, sit down and really look at their images and their style.” On Your Wedding Day Getting Ready This is the perfect time for those detail shots that we love so much (seriously, if you only knew how much I love this part of the wedding day). While you and your crew are relaxing and getting ready we can arrange the rings with shoes and flowers, jewelry, invitations, heirlooms, dresses and anything else you would like in those shots. If you have two photographers one can get candid shots of everyone visiting while you get ready, while the other is arranging details. Take Your Time

Photographer Letter Continued from pg. 18

under eyes and chin can be darker and more noticeable and anything in shade will be much darker than in the sun - it’s difficult to keep the lighting in the final product consistent if people are placed in both shade and sunlight. From mid afternoon as the sun moves lower in the sky toward the horizon it creates a softer light that we call golden hour. Some family photographers shoot exclusively during golden hour for those dreamy rich tones that you see us using so often in our images online. After the sun goes down there is a very small window of time (about fifteen minutes) that I think is truly magical called the blue hour or dusk. These changing light conditions have a huge impact on your photos and deciding which part of your day you want to take place in each style could help dictate your itinerary. If you want formal photos during sunset, an early ceremony and supper could help you get out for some shots between the reception and dance. Talking to your photographer about the style of images you are drawn to will help them know the best shooting conditions to achieve a similar style. When scheduling your ceremony, first look, photos, etc., leave more time than you think you may need. Everything takes a little longer than expected with hiccups arising and family needing bits of your time. It’s far less stressful to have a few minutes to relax with your wedding party before supper than to be rushed through pictures.

20

Throughout the day your excitement is running high and it is easy to get caught up in the moment. One of the most important things you can do throughout the day is to slow down. When you walk down the aisle toward the one you love, take your time to soak those moments in and ask your party to do the same. Let that kiss linger just a few seconds longer and find time to steal glances at each other as you go about talking with friends and enjoying the day. And please, touch each other gently and often, even if public displays of affection aren’t usually your thing. Depending on the photographer’s style, those moments may be the best of the day – those unplanned but undeniable glimpses of happiness and intimacy. Additional Things to Consider Make Your Day About the Two of You Parents and loved ones will always be valued and adored by you both, but in the end your wedding day is about the two of you and your story. If they are helping you pay for the occasion I suggest that you sit down with them early in the planning process to talk about the things that are most important to you, and the things that are most important to them. Communication is key in that situation. Whatever arrangement you have, be sure to make your relationship and its celebration the focus of the day. Bring in things that reflect the two of you and the

things that matter most to you both. Do you love cotton candy and don’t care for cake? Have a candy bar and leave it at that! If you live for camping and quiet hikes in the woods then have your wedding in the trees bringing in natural elements and gather with loved ones back at the family farm another day to celebrate. With wedding traditions falling by the wayside we are more free to make our wedding celebrations personalized and something to be embraced by couples. They are popular for a reason and are loved by many, but you don’t need a bouquet toss or a chicken dance to make your wedding official if they aren’t your thing! These are just a few of the things we love to share as photographers. We have the unique perspective of being one of the only vendors who stay the full day to see how everything comes together. We have knowledge and tips to be shared, so please ask your vendors plenty of questions. You are paying for their services and a part of that is advice based on their years of experience. Above all, enjoy the process! Candace owns and operates Bumble & Vine Photography out of Swift Current, SK offering wedding photography across Saskatchewan and beyond. MEN’S WEAR AT RITTINGER’S BY BROCK FRIESEN Brock has spent the last ten years in the men’s clothing business and has seen his fair share of trends come and go. Knowing what’s trending and going out of style is paramount to not only understanding the business but also the direction it is going. With styles coming and going quickly through the ease of digital media, Brock is very conscious of what customers are trending towards, but he also has the ability to direct them towards certain looks. His attention to detail and vision for what will complement each individual, combined with in-house tailor services is really what separates his expertise and store from any chain or franchise store. When it comes to weddings, he’s found that options and variety help put couples at ease. Gaining an understanding of the couple’s vision and being able to collaborate with them in achieving that vision is why he loves what he does. Dressing up should be fun; leave the stress of everything else prior up to him and his staff. Our concept of men’s wear embodies a blend of the current, modern individual while still emphasizing the integrity of traditional men’s clothing. Our legacy can be almost wholly attributed to the fact that we have never compromised the product or service. Customers seek us out when they want a depth of understanding and an unprecedented knowledge of men’s wear. We are devoted to preserving the tradition, knowledge and expertise we have acquired throughout the past 60 years, which has passed through the hands of many distinguished individuals. We are here to help guide you, serve you and provide to you the epitome of men’s fashion and style. Your clothes are an extension of your identity and we want to help make it a reality. We provide ready-to-wear men’s clothing, from the everyday casual to dress wear, alongside your choice of more formal attire, tastefully complemented by a distinct collection of footwear and accessories.

out aspect of the store and palpable in every detail and offering. We aspire to create a unique shopping experience with a spin on traditional and progressive values, high quality products, first class service and dedication to our patrons and our community. TIPS FOR FINDING YOUR WEDDING ATTIRE We recommend calling ahead when you begin your planning to ensure we have someone available to help you when you come in. If you are uncomfortable coming into the store at this time, we will accommodate you by being your personal on-the-go consultant, provided over social media, e-mail or direct message communication. When you first arrive at the store you will have many options to choose from. To get a feel for what you are looking for we will provide you first with the option to purchase or rent. Purchasing allows us to explore many different options, collections and ideas, especially if you’re thinking of non-traditional wedding attire for either the groom or groomsmen. In the event we don’t have something instock we have in-store product, fabric swatch boards, catalogues and pictures for you to look through. Realizing that a catalogue, picture or swatch might not do justice to the item, we will work together to find something that will help you visualize and realize its potential. Rental options are limited, but they provide choices that cater towards slim, modern and classic stylings. We have catalogues and fabric swatches for you to preview and get a better idea of each item’s true colour and feel. PURCHASING ITEMS Suits When it comes to suits there are two options:

The experience at Rittinger’s includes initial set-up with contact information, consulting, budgeting, measuring, wardrobe sizing and fitting, tailoring, pressing and steaming garments and, if needed, a shoe polish.

Off-The-Rack An off-the-rack suit can be purchased and specifically tailored in store by our expert tailor, Mildred. We usually have about 200 - 250 suits on hand at any given time, each with its own unique fit, fabric style and details. (Available in BIG & TALL)

Immediately upon entering our shop you’ll experience an adaptation of the quality expected, the simplicity you’ve always desired, and the service bestowed upon you from a friendly, familiar face, with an intrinsic understanding of your needs. The quality is evident in each well-thought-

Custom A custom suit is made to your exact body specifications where a custom pattern is created based on your body measurements. You’ll have your choice of fabrics, cuts and finer details included in the process. A custom suit

SW WEDDING EXPO LAUNCH BY KIRSTIN PATZER Getting married during this pandemic sucks. I’m not going to sugar coat it or downplay it. This is a crappy time to have a wedding and we both know it.

Once you’ve grieved, it’s time to focus on bigger things and move forward with the things that you are able to control.

When everything is so crazy it’s easy to let yourself be angry and depressed and all kinds of negative. And it is important to let yourself grieve. Grieve the loss of expectations, of time, of plans that were cancelled and postponed. Give yourself space and time to feel the loss.

Let’s talk big picture for just a sec. Someday, you’ll look back at your wedding day and it will seem like another lifetime. You’ll show your pictures to your kids and tell them all the funny stories about things that went wrong and how you were so happy your face hurt from smiling. So when obstacles come, pandemic or not, ask yourself, ‘Is this something that will matter in a few years?’ Because in the end, you are building a marriage, not a wedding.

As a foster parent, I am no stranger to this feeling of helplessness. Of going to bed not knowing if you’ll wake to a whole new set of rules. Of having the government decide how intimate details of your life will unfold, for good or bad. Of having to say ‘there is no plan’ when people ask what the plan is. So although my wedding was long before any Covid protocols, I am here to say I get it. And sometimes you just need to sit in the grief for a while. And then you need to let it go. Staying in that place will not help you. It’s a black hole, sucking up your life.

Okay, now back to your wedding, because it is actually a big deal. Why else would we all be here?! The SW Wedding Expo is evolving to help you plan your day all year long! Wedding planning doesn’t just happen in one weekend in February, so why should the expo? Here’s a few ways you can connect with the southwest wedding community during the whole year.

Ask River Dear River, We have lived together a while now and have everything we need for our home. What is the best way to ask for money instead of gifts from our wedding guests? Dear Reader, Gone are the days where the blushing bride would leave her parent’s home and move in with her new husband after the wedding, thus requiring an entire battalion of housewares and linens. These days it’s far more common for the wedded couple to have either been co-habitating for some time, or living on their own in a fairly wellestablished situation. So when the new spouses start their wedded life they likely don’t need a new blender and thirty-seven toasters. In fact, a bit of cash would come in far handier so you can work on those renovations you need, or finally replace that hand-me-down couch in the basement. But how to phrase the request for cash is a dilemma. The general rule is that it is tacky to ask for cash. That said, if you are really set on getting money there are some ways to do it graciously. Firstly, don’t include it on your invitation. Most couples have websites with all of the important information about their big day including a gift registry page, even if it’s a small one with just a few items (for those who are not comfortable with giving cash). This is the best place for a cash request. Include wording that specifies what the money will go toward, like “Your presence is gift enough, but if you would like to contribute to our renovations, we would greatly appreciate it.” There are registry sites that can be set up for projects and goals like this. You can also let your wedding party and immediate family know so they can help spread the word. Ultimately though, the decision of what to give comes down to the guest and it’s important to be gracious. To quote the local daycare provider at snack time “you get what you get, and you don’t get upset.”
