Facts & Figures 2011 / Danish Film Institute
OUTLOOK
Despite a slight decrease in tickets sold on the Danish theatrical market in 2011, Danish films came back on track with a substantial increase. Admissions to Danish films went up 20% reaching a domestic market share at 27%, compared to 17% in 2009 and 22% in 2010. In 2011, 12.4 million tickets were sold at the box office, equal to 2.2 tickets per capita. Danish films sold 3.3 million tickets. Danish documentaries also did very well in Danish cinemas, with 8 documentary titles enjoying a theatrical release and reaching more than 70,000 cinemagoers in total. International success In 2011, Danish cinema made a strong showing on the international scene. Early in the year, Susanne Bier’s In a Better World won first a Golden Globe, then an Oscar. Danish cinema was strongly represented at the Berlinale and in Cannes, with five and three films, respectively. Nicolas Winding Refn won the Best Director award in Cannes for his US-produced Drive, while Kirsten Dunst won Best Actress for her performance in Lars Von Trier’s Melancholia. At the European Film Awards in December, Melancholia was named Best European film, while Susanne Bier took home the award for best European Director. In all, Danish features were screened at more than 200 film festivals worldwide, winning awards at more than 50. Digital cinema rollout In 2011, the digital rollout in Denmark has almost reached its completion. From April 2011 to April 2012 the percentage of cinemas with at least one digital screen went from 48% to 92%. This remarkable increase was, to a large extent, based on private investment. But also the Danish Film Institute’s support programme for rural and art house cinemas made a substantial contribution to the rollout. Film Policy Accord 2011-2014 2011 was the first year to see the tentative effects of the new Film Policy Accord set by the Danish parliament in 2010 for the period 2011-2014. The key points in the accord is the creation of a more flexible support system, talent development within the field of experimentation as well as mainstream, the improvement of international co- production and marketing and, as mentioned above, the digital rollout in Danish cinemas.
