BILLIARD TRIVIA!

From unknownfactsaboutbilliards.com

Billiard Origin The origin of all billiard games is an outdoor game similar to croquet, used to be played in France on the 14th century. Due to the game popularity among royalty as well as common people and thanks to the capriciousness of the European weather, the billiard game was born as an indoor game. Billiard was played on a table covered with green felt in order to resemble the lawn on which the ancestor game was played. Billiard and the Law The billiard game was outlawed for many years and in different countries: still at the early days of billiard, the game was accused of being immoral. Therefore, this faulty activity and its devoted players were chased by the Church. On

the early history of American billiards, when the term “pool room” was still a synonym for horse betting parlor, the game was illegal in many states. Even Thomas Jefferson had to hide a billiard table in his residency. 1st World Championship Nevertheless, the first world championship in sports history was the 1873 World Billiards Championship. William Cook won the title. John Roberts was the runner up. Billiard and Celebs Other historic celebrities who had owned a billiard table include King Louis XI and Mary the Queen of Scots (whose billiard table cloth was used by her assassins as cerements). Captain Mingaud, whose responsible for inventing the leather cue tip, had a billiard table in his prison cell.

Happy New Year to everyone, let’s all pray that 2012 is the year of recovery, the year WE take back what belongs to us. What is that? It’s our rights and our attitudes toward happiness and success. Let us understand that we control our lives and our future, we control our country and who we allow to run it for us. My wish and hope for the new year is that WE ALL REALLY REALIZE HOW MUCH POWER WE HAVE AS A FREE PEOPLE. I pray that the people of this great country understand the power of ONE, yes ONE and that ONE is YOU! It is taking responsibility for yourself and your actions and doing what you feel deep inside is right! Right for yourself, your business and your country. Shame on our politicians, locally and nationally, shame on them for not doing what is best for our country and playing politics for their own benefit! And don’t tell me they have to play ball with each other to get things done, right is right, do the right thing. Stop all this bullshit and put people back to work and make our country whole again.

Business, well let’s talk about that! I’m going to be calling on all my old clients and new clients in this New Year and see what I can do to help them; I’ve lowered my prices for advertising and made changes in how we can finance payments better for everyone. Our newspapers have been serving the valley of the sun and Arizona for almost 25 years now, and I expect that we will be doing this for AT LEAST another 25 years, so if you’re expecting me to go anywhere forget it. If you didn’t read my December editorial please do now, it’s all about our businesses and possible ways we can improve them. Advertising is a key factor in business. It isn’t just how big of an ad you have, it’s the consistency, I believe in building your business through advertising, not just a flash in the pan. Our newspapers are the vehicles to keep your regular customers updated as to what you are doing and to excite NEW CUSTOMERS to come in for a visit and give you a chance to keep them. If you only focus on stealing customers from each other, our bar business doesn’t grow and new money doesn’t come into our bar community. I’ve watched pool rooms and bars go out of business by continuing to lower their prices on table time and booze until no one is making any money. It isn’t the prices, it’s what you are doing to attract and keep your clients. It’s the fun and camaraderie of your clients, the excitement and feeling a part of your establishment, you know… a home away from home.

We the people CAN NOT AND WILL NOT GIVE UP! Don’t read this with the writer in mind, read this with yourself in mind and what you can do for yourself and our country. Maybe we forgot what OUR COUNTRY is; it’s me, you and the people around us, your neighbor, the business down the street, it’s Call me now to take a new and the man or woman standing on fresh look at what our papers can the corner asking for help. do for you and your business.

Legends Sports Bar in Clinton, IA The 2011-2012 Lucasi Hybrid Cues All American Tour – presented by the American CueSports Alliance (ACS) – moved to Legends Sports Bar in Clinton, IA, Saturday, October 10. The $500-added 8-ball handicapped tourney on 7-foot Valley bar boxes drew 30 players. Keith Helfrich (Sterling, IL) [rated a “7” on a regional handicap system used] took control of the A-side with an undefeated run to the semi-finals. There he clipped Terry Stevens [6] (Davenport, IA) 7-5, and then took the hot seat with another hill-hill win over Rob Hess [5] (Coal Valley, IL) 7-4 On the B-side Kent Zirtzman [6] (Manchester, IA) stopped Casey Brokus [6] (Dubuque, IA) at 7th place, 6-5, and Clyde Dunlop [5] (Davenport, IA) tied Brokus by falling to the cue of Tim Krouse [6] (Clinton, IA) 6-1. In the next round, Josh Johnson [9] (Bettendorf, IA) and Kent Zirtzman were eliminated at 5th place by Tim Krouse 6-7 and Terry Stevens 6-1 respectively. Stevens then ousted Krouse at 4th place 6-5, but in the B-side finals, Stevens fell to Rob Hess 5-4. In the tourney finals, Rob Hess took advantage of another shot at Keith Helfrich to take the title in two sets by identical 5-3, 5-3 margins!

By virtue of Robb Hess being the highest-finishing ACS member in the event, he qualified for a free 9-Ball singles entry into the 2012 Lucasi Hybrid ACS Nationals at the Tropicana Las Vegas – courtesy of the ACS. The ACS wishes to thank sponsors Lucasi Hybrid Cues, Championship Billiard Fabric and Nick Varner Signature Cases for their support in donating “Value-InKind” product for this and all stops on the Lucasi Hybrid All American Tour. Sponsorship opportunities and tour stop openings are still available for the 2011/2012 All American Tour by contacting the ACS. The Tour continues in the Midwest on Saturday, October 17, with two more stops: 1). a $500 added 8-Ball Tourney at Pyramid Club in Addison, IL (contact Wally Bogdanski at 630-688-1719) and 2). a $500 added 8-Ball Tourney at Sharky’s Billiards in Davenport, IA (contact Michelle Miller at 563359-7225 or Terry Stevens at 563570-2613). Further information, entry details and schedules for the 2011/2012 Lucasi Hybrid All American Tour are available at www.americancuesports.org.

I’M TRYING TO PROVE A POINT...

A man drinks a shot of whiskey every night before bed. After years of this, the wife wants him to quit; she gets two shot glasses, filling one with water and the other with whiskey. After getting him to the table that had the glasses, she brings his bait box. She says “I want you to see this.” She puts a worm in the water and it swims

around the glass. She puts a worm in the whiskey, and the worm dies immediately. She then says, feeling that she has made her point clear, “what do you have to say about this experiment?” He responds by saying: “If I drink whiskey, I won’t get worms!”

• Memorials. If a friend or family member recently died and you loved that person very much, you may want to consider getting that person’s name or portrait tattooed on your body. Every time you look down at that tattoo, you will be able to relive all of the good moments that you shared with that person. • Celebration. You may want to get a tattoo to celebrate the birth of your child. You can get the name of your child or a portrait of your child tattooed on your body, along with the birth date of your child. You may not be appreciated for that tattoo when your child is young, but as he or she ages, your child will realize how much love you have to give. • Special Events. Tattoos are a great way to commemorate special events that you have been a part of. Special events that may be worthy of a tattoo include getting married, receiving a big promotion at work or achieving a milestone in a hobby that you participate in. • Spiritual Status. If you are a religious person, you may consider getting a tattoo that references your spiritual status. While it varies by religion, tattoos that contain the religious cross are very popular.

Bad Reasons for Getting a Tattoo • Your Boyfriend/Girlfriend – Unless you’re married (or in some other committed relationship), don’t go getting Mary Beth’s name on your shoulder. Dating relationships have a 99.9% failure rate, so you’re against some pretty hefty odds. So, wait until there are rings on fingers before you start getting the tattoos, please. • Your Favorite ‘Vice’ – This has got to be one of the dumbest tattoos ever conceived. I’m talking about the guys with the logo of their favorite beer or (worse yet) a big ass pot leaf or something. Getting a tattoo of these types of things will make you look like a dumbass. And if you actually get something like this, you probably are a dumbass. • “I just really like the design” (a.k.a., No Reason at All) – Even if your tattoo is in reference to something stupid, at least it’s in reference to something. Tattoos that have absolutely no meaning whatsoever (I’m looking at you, guy-with-tribal-band) are, to say the least, not recommended.

YOUR NAME AND/OR THE NAME OF YOUR BAND: Joe, from Cactus Chainsaw Prickly Joe-Bass/Vox Cactus Rob- Guitar Chainsaw Mike-Drums Saguaro Fred-Lead Vocals INSTRUMENT YOU PLAY: Bass DESCRIBE YOUR BAND/MUSIC: We are a hard rock/metal band with a heavy southern influence. HOW OLD WERE YOU WHEN YOU LEARNED TO PLAY AND WHO INSPIRED YOU? My Dad. IF YOU COULD JAM WITH ANYONE ALIVE OR DEAD WHO WOULD IT BE? Unfortunately, most of the cats I wanna jam with have left us so it would have to be Jimi Hendrix, Dimebag Darrell, and Stevie Ray Vaughan...... On the upside though...my Dad is still kickin’ and I really love playing with him. WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE "CHEESY" SONG OF ALL TIME? Blister in the Sun WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE VENUE TO PLAY AT IN AZ? Jughead’s! WHAT’S YOUR POISON/DRINK OF CHOICE?

I’m not prejudice. I like all booze! WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER TO BE THE BEST SONG YOU PERFORM? Right now it would have to be "Overdrive" It’s got that Chainsaw feel and just kix ya in the teeth! YOU’VE BEEN OUT OF THE SCENE FOR A LITTLE WHILE. WHAT'S GOING ON WITH THE BAND? Well, we have replaced our singer, so that has had a huge impact on the band’s sound and direction. I think we have truly found ourselves as a band and am looking forward to writing a new CD hopefully, that should be out sometime this summer. WHERE ARE YOUR GIGS FOR THE NEXT MONTH? No gigs next month but I think were back in the mix starting in March so thanx to everyone for stickin' with us DO YOU READ TABLE TALK AND DART STARR NEWSPAPERS? Religiously! DO YOU PLAY PRIVATE PARTIES AND ARE YOU AVAILABLE FOR BOOKING? Yes and Yes. www.cactuschainsaw.com Contact/Booking info: Cougar Promotions c/o Debra Payne 480 371 5964 YOUR NAME AND/OR THE NAME OF YOUR BAND: Justin Knight, and I am currently the drummer for Creepsville666 and Blood From Stone. INSTRUMENT YOU PLAY: I bang skins with my wood! BRIEFLY DESCRIBE YOUR BAND/MUSIC: Creepsville666 is a mixture of glam, psychobilly, and punk, while Blood From Stone is very groovin' hard rock. HOW OLD WERE YOU WHEN YOU LEARNED TO PLAY AND WHO INSPIRED YOU? I've always been interested in drums since I first got into music when I was just a youngun', even before I was in elementary school. I on-and-off taught myself to play drums once I got serious with it, I was about nine when I got my first real kit. However, after five or six years of focusing on guitar, I decided to pick up drums for real. This was last year, hahah! When I did get into it to take it seriously, it was because I saw guys like Racci Shay, Seven Antonopoulos, Morgan Rose, Roy Mayorga, Vik Foxx, Zoltan Chaney, and Ian Shuirr do their thing, and even the guys in Mushroomhead and Slipknot. They showed me that

drumming wasn't only a musical thing, but a visual thing as well. Bands that have always influenced me were KISS (first and foremost), Green Day, Metallica, Dope, Wednesday 13, Vains of Jenna, Black Label Society, Motley Crue, and so on. IF YOU COULD JAM WITH ANYONE ALIVE OR DEAD WHO WOULD IT BE? Too many to name. Alive, all of my influences above if it were another drummer. If it were alive and someone on a different instrument, probably Mike Ness from Social Distortion or Green Day. Dead, definitely Dimebag, Eric Carr, and Peter Steele. Also Michael Jackson. I wouldn't mind being a part of his show for a night, that dude could rock it! WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE "CHEESY" SONG OF ALL TIME? Everybody by Backstreet Boys, and everything by Nickelback. Say what you will, I love Nickelback. One of the best live bands out right now. WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE VENUE TO PLAY AT IN AZ? Definitely the Marquee. Every time I play there I get excited, because I've seen the majority of my favorite and most influential bands there for years before I started making a dent in my own musical progress. WHAT’S YOUR POISON/DRINK OF CHOICE? Full Throttle, Monster Nitrous, Red Bull, Rockstar, and Coke. Have I tried them all combined together yet? No. Should I? Absolutely. Continued on next page.

WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER TO BE THE BEST SONG YOU PERFORM? With Creepsville, either the new tune Dance For Me or our cover of Take 'Em All by Cock Sparrer. With Blood From Stone, our opener Devil's Daughter. WHERE ARE YOUR GIGS FOR THE NEXT MONTH? In January I'm going to be doing a few Creepsville666 shows. January 25th at Club Red with the Stolen Babies, and January 27th with Flexx Bronco (the venue for this show has not yet been established). DO YOU READ TABLE TALK AND DART STARR NEWSPAPERS? YOUR NAME AND/OR THE NAME OF YOUR BAND: Katie Booth / Katie Booth and Company INSTRUMENT YOU PLAY: Singer BRIEFLY DESCRIBE YOUR BAND/MUSIC: My band is eclectic and my music is as well. However, I have tendencies toward the Blues!!! HOW OLD WERE YOU WHEN YOU LEARNED TO PLAY AND WHO INSPIRED YOU? I started singing with my Dad's band when I was 5 years old. I actually won a competition at the Red Carpet Inn in Waco, Texas my first time on stage. I was so scared, my Dad had me turn around and face him to sing! So, my Dad really inspired me that first year. Then, when I turned 6, I heard John Lennon and The Beatles! From that point onward, it was my Dad and John Lennon! IF YOU COULD JAM WITH ANYONE ALIVE OR DEAD WHO WOULD IT BE?

I would want to play with John Lennon!!! But, secondly, it would be nice to play on-stage with my Dad again! Maybe I'll get him out here from Texas and we can hit an open mic night! WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE "CHEESY" SONG OF ALL TIME? It would have to be "Rocky Raccoon" by The Beatles WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE VENUE TO PLAY AT IN AZ? Now, that's a tough one...I LOVE playing at the Thunderbird Roadhouse for open mic nights on Wednesdays. But, I also love to sing up at the Hideaway and the Road Runner! Pretty much anywhere they will have me! WHAT’S YOUR POISON/DRINK OF CHOICE? Not much of a drinking person. But, I have been known to have a picture of Diet Coke with a shot of Captain Morgan for flavor...no ice! I'll usually only have one because I am on my motorcycle and I prefer the shiny side up when I ride!

SELF PORTRAIT WINNERS!

RIP PICK KIM EDWARDS

Written by John Edward Bartosiak

PICK Kim Edwards, guitarist of John Bartosiak's blues band passed away last week at age 60 after suffering a heart attack at his and John's work site. They had been playing and working together 4 years now. John and Pick played heavy Chicago style blues. John says it was very difficult to move to phoenix and quickly find someone who was damn good and wanted to play blues 12 hours a day, the way I like to do it, plus put up with me. I’m glad we got to do some shows at Chopper John’s, Toso’s and the phoenix 10k at Comerica.

He loved Hendrix and turned me onto Hendrix and a super heavy style of loud rockin’ blues. After 4 years of jammin’ and all that recorded music and future plans we had, it will be tough to try and replace him or join another band right now. After teaching him the blues for 4 years he taught me the blues with one phone call. I really felt the blues for the first time with his passing. He was an awesome guitarist and person and friend and will be truly missed. John Bartosiak still plays Char’s on Monday nights and Rips on Thursdays.

LUCKY GOLD & SILVER EXCHANGE

Well, the bells have stopped and bills are a coming in as the holidays gently leave us for another year. As the snow melts or dust settles our mail boxes are filled with bills and thrills of after the holiday sales, no money you say, well I’ve spent my pay, what am I to do, then whispers the leprechaun from Lucky Gold & Silver Exchange “I’ll exchange your gold and silver for cash my laddie or lassie”, I pay the fairest in town of anyone around.

Well I’m sure you get the message from above, if your wallet or purse is a little light and the bills are coming in or you see all the after holiday sales, open your jewelry boxes or your hiding places you store your old or broken jewelry and bring it down to our friend Jim at Lucky Gold & Silver Exchange. Jim’s been around for awhile and is always fair and honest as he just buys gold and silver and pays the best prices possible, he’ll give you a quote and some advice and let you decide without any pressure. He’ll tell you to go check it out elsewhere if you’d like. I secretly think Jim may be the leprechaun but don’t tell him I said so. Cruising the Fast Lane

Check Out This Italian Motion Machine! There’s nothing more fun than cruising Scottsdale streets in a nice Italian convertible. In this case, we are not talking about a Ferrari or Lambo. Yep, it’s the little Fiat 500 you see in this picture. Now looking at it, you might think this is a cheapie mini-car with no power, stiff ride, and poor quality. This is

what I suspected at first, but after driving it around for a week, I can assure you the opposite is true. This is one snazzy machine. I liked it. The engine is small, but had plenty of ability to cruise at 80 mph, and acceleration was just fine. A lot of credit can go to the sporty 6-speed automatic gearbox. Gas mileage was good at 28-32 overall. Steering, handling, and braking ability were all sporty too. Ride quality was comfortable for such a small car. The cabin looked great, although I cheated a bit by getting the optional leather trim. All controls were

easy to use once learned. As you might suspect, this rig fits into any parking space with ease. This so-called convertible, in reality, has a retractable soft top in the center only. That’s okay, as the design provides a more solid body structure. This is a high quality setup, with lots of padding and sound insulation. At $4,000 extra, it should be! Rear vision is slightly blocked with the top down, depending on your height. Short people may have a problem with this. Overall, this is a sophisticated European machine, and I was very impressed. The base price starts about $15,500 with hardtop roof and 5-speed manual shifter. Mine was loaded with everything; automatic, leather, soft-top, stereo, satellite radio, and more, so it just about reached the $25,000 price tag. I am sure you can find one equipped to suit your needs.

Faces From The Past

2011 BCA HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES

DANNY DILIBERTO, born in Buffalo, N.Y., DiLiberto chose billiards ahead of boxing, bowling and baseball, all sports at which the multitalented athlete excelled. In fact, DiLiberto boxed professionally and was undefeated as a professional fighter. Under the tutelage of famed trainer Angelo Dundee, and boxing under the name Danny Toriani, DiLiberto posted a 14-0-2 record, with 12 knockouts in the late ’50s, until his oft-injured hands forced him to retire from the ring. Boxing’s loss was billiards’ gain, as the colorful DiLiberto spent nearly 30 years near the top of the game. DiLiberto won numerous national-class tournaments in the ’60s, but was at his peak in the 1970s when 14.1 was the game of champions in the pool world. After falling in the title match of the prestigious BCA U.S. Open 14.1 championship in both

14

1968 (to Joe Balsis) and 1972 (to Steve Mizerak), DiLiberto won the straight pool division at the 1972 Johnston City World All-Around Championships. DiLiberto then went on to defeat 9-ball division champ Billy Incardona and onepocket division winner Larry “Boston Shorty” Johnson in a three-man playoff to earn the Johnston City All-Around crown? DiLiberto’s versatility at the table shown through in the ’80s when he defeated Nick Varner in the title match to win the 1981 BCA National 8-Ball Championship, then won the ’83 World One-Pocket title and the 1984 Classic Cup 9-Ball crown, giving him a major national title in the four major pool disciplines. “I’m really choked up,” DiLiberto said after being informed of the honor. “I really thought the Hall of

Fame would wait until I was dead to vote for me. It’s truly an honor. This makes my day, my month, my year!”

RALF SOUQUET, born in Eschweiler, Germany, has been a dominant player in Europe for more than 25 years, having won more than 40 German titles and 36 European Championship medals. But his record is nearly as impressive in top U.S. and international events. “The Kaiser,” as Souquet is known, boasts world titles in both 9-ball (1996) and 8-ball (2008), a gold medal in 9-ball at the 2009 World Games, and is a five-time winner of the World Pool Masters. On American soil, Souquet owns a BCA U.S. Open 14.1 Championship crown (2000), a U.S. Open 9-Ball title (2002), a pair of BCA Open 9-Ball Championship titles, and has won the Derby City 9-ball

BILLIARDS TABLE TALK JANUARY 2012

crown three times. “This is great news!” said Souquet, who had finished second in Hall of Fame voting to Francisco Bustamante in 2010. “It’s a great honor. When you talk about the greatest players, like Archer and Strickland and Varner, they’re all in the Hall of Fame. Being mentioned in the same list with those names is a great achievement.” Souquet becomes the seventh foreign-born player inducted into the BCA Hall of Fame. “I’m also proud to be the first European male player in the Hall of Fame,” Souquet added. “I think it’s probably harder for a foreign player to be voted in, but it’s nice that the American pool community believes that my overall game and approach to the sport has been positive. I must have done something right.”

A LITTLE HUMOR FOR THE SOUL

Every time I walk into a singles bar I can hear Mom’s wise words: Don’t pick that up, you don’t know where it’s been! Ever notice that people who spend money on beer, cigarettes and lottery tickets, are always complaining about being broke and not feeling well No one ever says, “It’s only a game!” when their team is winning.

I don’t approve of political jokes. I’ve seen too many of them get elected. I live in my own little world but it’s OK, everyone knows me here. The closest I ever got to a 4.0 in college was my blood alcohol content. There are two sides to every divorce: Yours and Shithead’s.

MEET the January Bartender of the Month: Bar: Vinnie and Joey’s Name: Sarah aka Punchy Likes/Turn-ons: Honest, caring people who live life to the fullest. Dislikes/Turn-offs: Stuck up assholes, sloppy drunks Hobbies: Raising my son to be a wonderful person. Favorite Color: Red Tattoos: I LOVE tattoos. Favorite drink to make: White Russian Favorite drink to drink: Blondeheaded Slut. Best pick-up line you’ve ever heard: I’ve heard them all and don’t like any of them. Days/Nights @ work: Sunday thru Wednesday nights 6pm-2am Drink Specials: Everyday there is a new special and you can’t beat the everyday prices! This is a great bar with good people and good drinks.

A LITTLE BIT OF WPA HISTORY

The World Pool-Billiard Association (WPA) is the international governing body for pocket billiards. The group was formed in Germany in November of 1987, as a result of the efforts of the European Pocket Billiard Federation. The Asian Pocket Billiard Union (APBU) was formed shortly after, and became the second member of the WPA. North America became the third member in 1990 and Oceania joined in 1992. The Australasian Pool Association represented Oceania in the WPA until 1999, until it was replaced by the Oceania Pocket Billiard Association (OPBA). It was also in 1999 that the Confederacion Panamerican de Billar (CPB) and the All African Pool Association (AAPA) joined the WPA and based upon this the WPA truly represents all corners of the world. The current WPA president is Ian Anderson of Australia. The WPA is also one of the three member organizations of the World Confederation of Billiards Sports (WCBS), representing the billiard disciplines of pool, snooker and carom. The WCBS is the international umbrella organization that is a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). After having had European Championships as the highest level of competition for many years, and being aware of the fact that many events were organized in the United States, many of the European players were becoming dissatisfied with the development of the sport in Europe and yearned for competition on a higher level. With knowledge of this, the idea came about to form a world organization. At a European Pocket Billiard Federation (EPBF) Board meeting in Germany during November 1987, the idea again re-surfaced. In order to make this attempt possible, all Board members voluntarily donated money of their own to create a logo, proper letterheads and initiate proper communication with various parts of the world. Soon after the work began, letters were sent to all persons and/or organizations that were known.

JANUARY 2012

Kazuo Fujima of Japan immediately replied that Asians are interested in founding a world body. Strengthened and encouraged by his reply, an invitation was sent out for the first General Assembly to take place in conjunction with the 1988 European Championships in Stockholm, Sweden. Mr. Fujima rapidly confirmed his attendance while no response was received from the USA. However, Mr. Paul Gerni appeared at the meeting to represent the USA. As a result of this meeting, a provisional Board consisting of Mr. Kazuo Fujima (Japan), Mr. Paul Gerni, (USA) Mr. Jorgen Sandman (Sweden) and Mr. Horst Vondenhoff (Germany) was created; each one given responsibilities to secure further development. These efforts culminated in February 1990, when 48 players (32 men, 16 women, in separate divisions) participated in the inaugural WPA World Nine-Ball Championship in Bergheim, Germany. The event is now annual and is currently conducted in Qatar. After the event, various federations spent countless hours in meetings establishing common grounds on which an intercontinental federation could exist. The first General Assembly was held on March 3, 1990, and it was at this assembly that the World Pool-Billiard Association was sanctioned as the international governing body for pool. The acronym WPA was chosen, so as not to conflict with the Women’s Professional Billiard Association, already known as the WPBA. WPA tournaments have grown considerably. In addition to the World 9-Ball Championships for men, women and juniors, there is an annual World 8-Ball Championship for men, World 10-Ball Championships for both men and women, along with several World Ranking events that are conducted each year in all parts of the globe. In 2011 more than 3 million dollars in prize money was awarded to players through these competitions.

“SCOOTER” BILL KING PASSES

On December 31st, 2011, our good friend and patron of Spud’s Bar & Grill passed away from burns suffered when his apartment caught fire a few days earlier. I know Bill has a daughter and our prayers and sympathy go out to her and any other family members. Bill was well liked and loved by many of the Spud’s family. He will truly be missed by us all. We all lovingly called him “Scooter Bill” as he was always arriving and leaving Spud’s riding his medical scooter. Bill was one of boys that sat around the bar talking and making up lies like the rest of us, you know “one of the boys”. He will surely be missed as one of the permanent fixtures in our old watering hole. I know there’s a cool bar in heaven above that all our ole friends end up sitting at and I’m sure someday we’ll all be sitting around talking about everyone
