H a p p y T hank s gi v ing, this is the month to give thanks for all we have, and not stress over what we don’t have, sounds easy right? Once you truly appreciate what you have, not having more is not as important as it was before. Please help support our communities by dropping donations into the food boxes you see in our bars and rooms. As times are getting tougher and tougher reach out to your neighbors and friends and offer your help where you can, always remember the reason for the season. To all the good people that go out of their way to promote and support the efforts of helping I thank you from all those that would if they could… Thank You for your kindness, thoughts and prayers, your goodness does not go unnoticed. Please support your local bars, rooms, leagues and tournaments, in these tough times for businesses; our community needs you to have your parties and other events in their establishments, book your holiday parties early. Check out your local newspapers for events going on locally, join a league in your favorite bar or room, play a pool or dart tournament and test your skill. Take your family out for lunch or dinner at one of your

favorite bar n grills; take the time to thank your neighborhood bars for all they do. I want to wish a speedy recovery to my good friends Tommy and Dave (Boss) and hope to see them both back on their feet soon. I’ve had some comments on my front covers over the last 6 months or so, mostly positive and a few negative, my job is to bring my readers entertainment and get my advertisers ads into the hands of my readers, pretty ladies always seem to work. Most of the models used are local ladies interested in a modeling career and need to get their look out there. If you see a model you like and you are interested in hiring her for your ad or for other modeling work you can reach them through me. After the 1st of the New Year I will probably start to give more information about the models such as their ages, likes, dislikes, hobbies and other interests they have. If you have comments on this please drop me an email. If you are or know of an aspiring model and wish to submit her name, phone number or email address feel free to drop me a line and tell me a little about yourself or her.

THE BLACK WIDOW Jeanette Lee, known throughout the world as “The Black Widow,” has enjoyed one of the most illustrious careers in billiards history. Repeatedly recognized by Billiards Digest as one of the sport’s most powerful people, Lee has claimed more than 30 national and international titles. Formerly ranked as the #1 player in the world, she was named the “WPBA Sportsperson of the Year” in 1998 and has earned Player of the Year honors from both Billiards Digest and Pool & Billiards Magazine. In 2001, Jeanette was the Gold medalist for the United States at the World Games and has also captured Silver twice at the World Championships during her 14-year professional career. In 2004, Jeanette won the World Trick Shot Championships and BCA Open. In 2005 Jeanette won the China Invitational and more recently in 2007 won the World Team Cup, Empress Cup, and the International Skins Billiard Championship with her doubles partner and husband, George Breedlove. Born on July 9, 1971, Jeanette was raised in Brooklyn, NY. At the age of thirteen, Jeanette was diagnosed with

scoliosis, a disorder in which there is a curve, often S-shaped or C-shaped, of the spine or backbone. To alleviate the progression of the debilitating condition, Jeanette underwent scoliosis surgery. The surgical procedure involved techniques to fuse or join the vertebrae along the curve of her spine. Metal rods and other instrumentation were attached to her spine in order to hold her vertebrae together during the months after her surgery while the bones in her spine eventually fused together. Such instrumentation was left in her body where they remain today. Scoliosis surgery is one of the longest and most complicated orthopedic surgical procedures performed on children due to the long operation time and hospitalization for recovery. Her surgery at the time was thought to be a success, but Jeanette’s affliction with scoliosis was not yet at an end.

As an adolescent, Jeanette Lee excelled in scholastics and was accepted into the prestigious Bronx High School of Science. Jeanette expected to attend college and pursue a more conventional career after graduating high school. She completed two years of college while pursuing a Bachelor degree in Early Childhood Development and Elementary Education. However, around this time period in her young life, Jeanette discovered the game of pool, a discovery that would change the course of her life. Jeanette immersed herself in all facets of the game and began to practice pool incessantly; practicing up to ten hours a day. Additionally, Jeanette began studying literature on the game and even befriended “old-time” pool professionals.

In 1993, Jeanette’s hard work and unrelenting pursuit of excellence in the game of pool resulted in her professional debut at the age of 21. She turned pro as a full-time member of the Women’s Professional Billiards Association (WPBA) only three years after picking up the sport at age18. In only her first year as a pro, Lee rocketed into the ranks of the top ten in the WPBA. Less than two years later, at the age of 23, Lee was ranked the number one women’s professional pool player in the world.

Jeanette Lee entered the professional pool world with fury. Her reputation grew to legendary proportions as During this time of her billiards im- the world came to know her as “The mersion, Jeanette suffered immensely Black Widow,” a persona Lee acquired from pain caused by the steel rods through her ability to overwhelm, alimplanted in her back. Her intense most devour, her opponents in combipursuit to perfect her new passion nation with exclusively wearing black consequently aggravated her spinal attire during tournaments.

This is an open invitation to ALL POOL LEAGUES IN ARIZONA, also to all pool tournament directors. You are cordially invited to share all your pool news with your players and the general public by having your pool news published in “BILLIARDS TABLE TALK NEWSPAPER”. The Billiards Table Talk Newspaper is in its 23rd year serving Arizona pool players, their sponsors, and our local bars, without fail we have strived to serve our pool community. We have seen some of the worst and the best come and go, we have watched the power structure raise and fall through many of hands, through it all pool has survived and so have we! We have seen some of the biggest pool leagues destroyed by greed, politics and selfishness, we have seen our tournaments dwindle to hands full at our local establishments, and seen many establishments go out of business. I’m not trying to organize anything, take business away from anyone, not going to throw rocks at other newspapers, not going bad mouth players or business owners I’m just going to let you know that “BILLIARDS TABLE TALK NEWSPAPER” is delivered to over 500 locations in the valley every month,

the purpose of the newspaper is to let the general public know about our sport of pool and our players, to promote our bars, lounges and rooms, to help our retailers and to move our sport to a higher level. This is a chance again for all of us to get behind our sport of pool and move it forward, set aside your prejudices, your past disagreements which you probably can’t even remember what they are, and some never knew what they were they just blindly followed. My emails are as follows: thedartstarr@ yahoo.com and billiardstabletalk@yahoo. com and drjackhypnosis@yahoo.com my phone number is 623 340-0481 send your highlights, stats, announcements, birthdays, special events, charity shoots and things to promote your players, players send in stupid pictures, cute mishaps, jokes, fun things that happen on league or tournament nights. I will be contacting each dart league owner to personally invite them to share their dart news with our readers, in the mean time I look forward to hearing from you soon. Thank You Dr. Jack

BILLIARD FUN FACTS •

The Hustler was based on a novel by Walter Tevis. The novel, however, was based on a short story he had earlier submitted to Playboy. Before “The Hustler” was released, the “Philco TV Theater” aired an episode called “Goodbye, Johnny”, which bore an uncanny resemblance to the Playboy short story. In it, Cliff Robertson portrayed the cocky young hustler, making Robertson – not Newman – the original “Fast Eddie” Felson. • The dome on Monticello, Thomas Jefferson’s home, conceals a billiard room. In Jefferson’s day, billiards was illegal in Virginia. • The world’s largest billiard hall was built during billiards’ “Golden Age”. “The Recreation”, a mammoth seven-story health spa, was a bustling Detroit business in the 1920’s. It featured 103 tables, 88 bowling lanes, 20 barber chairs, three manicuring stands, 14 cigar stands, a lunch counter on each floor, a restaurant that could seat 300, and an exhibition room with theater seating, that could accommodate 250 spectators.

TO ADVERTISE YOUR BUSINESS IN THIS PAPER CALL JACK 623-340-0481 HOW OLD WERE YOU WHEN YOU LEARNED TO PLAY AND WHO INSPIRED YOU?

I started when I was about 11, idolizing all of the thrash gods and trying to be as fast and as notey as possible. Soon after, I realized that just wasn’t my gig, and I started listening to more and more soul based music and I fell in love with the blues. The biggest impact any player has had on me and Whiskey Six’s music would have to be R.L. Burnside. Such an incredibly deep blues musician with that punk rock attitude that separated him out from the rest. Rory Gallagher soon followed, with the always constant Jimmy Page in the background. IF YOU COULD JAM WITH ANYONE ALIVE OR DEAD WHO WOULD IT BE?

Chriskey Six - Vocals/Guitar Dave Lansing - Lead Guitar Raf Garcia - Bass Matt Indes – Drums An interview with Chriskey Six of Whiskey Six: BRIEFLY DESCRIBE YOUR BAND & MUSIC: It’s like if Metallica, ZZ Top, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Guns n’ Roses all had an orgy, and 9 months later there was an illegitimate child. And sometime after an old blues man picked him up and raised him. Whiskey Six is that child! Birthed from the old legends of rock, and forged in blues, Whiskey Six delivers an old school flavor with a new school attitude.

As much as I love Burnside, I’d probably get a kick out of playing with Rory Gallagher the most. He had such a way with playing, especially in his acoustic work. He could command his heart in each note, and just to sit and take part of that would be nothing short of a religious experience. WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE SONG OF ALL TIME? The Rain Song by Led Zeppelin. Led Zeppelin, yes I know, everyone goes there. But with this song, there is such a large degree of subtlety and grace that is very hard to capture. From the violins accompanying the already beautiful guitar line, to the simplistic deliverance of Robert Plant’s vocals; there is not a single part of this song that doesn’t pull on the heart strings. WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE LOCAL BAND? Trying to get me in trouble?! Right now I’ve really been digging on Vex, but I’m always surprised at the amount of local talent the valley provides. There is such a large talent pool here it’s hard to focus it all in one band. I would definitely have to recommend What Laura Says to anybody though.

WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE VENUE TO PLAY AT IN AZ?

The Blooze Bar. There’s always great vibe and a great atmosphere. Regardless of what’s happening we can always guarantee we’re going to have fun there. WHAT’S YOUR POISON/DRINK OF CHOICE? WHISKEY. Lots. Or you can throw a little bit of the Kraken in there. We’ve downed a good 3 bottles of stuff lately. Although a LOT of puke has been involved. WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER TO BE THE BEST SONG YOU PERFORM? Love, Sex, and American Excess. Not that I don’t like playing the other ones, but there’s something about the groove of that one. It’s physically fun to play and sing, and when we’re all in the moment, something just clicks for us as players. WHY DO YOU THINK THE CHICKEN REALLY CROSSED THE ROAD? Whiskey Six was throwing another all night bar buster party!!! Complete with live jamming, booze, and more women than you could shake a stick at (god bless those Whiskey Chix). Who WOULDN’T wanna come over?! WHERE ARE YOUR GIGS FOR THE NEXT MONTH? 910 Live on 11th, November 18th at Chaser’s, and for you folks on the West Side: Donna Jean’s Libations on the 19th! DO YOU READ TABLE TALK AND DART STARR NEWSPAPERS? I see it all the time at the pool hall I frequent! (Hey guys!)…

An Interview with Nick Keena of the Porch Dawgs: BRIEFLY DESCRIBE YOUR BAND & MUSIC:

It’s been another busy month for dethkitn, full of great music and fun times, including my two weekly open mics, -It is last show at Joes Grotto, Judas Priest and Dirtnap at the fair, a few shows at The Blooze, and most recently I checked out a We're a band. We play music. Brief enough for ya? But seriously folks, local band called NEUROTIC PLEASURES. Four guys with we're an acoustic jam band. a ton of attitude and energy, and all the anger of the old HOW OLD WERE YOU WHEN YOU NEUROTIC PLEASURES: Rage Against The Machine. I was tired, windblown and a LEARNED TO PLAY AND WHO little headachy when I arrived but two songs in their Joe Sawinski/Guitar & vocals contagious energy gave me my second wind. I especially INSPIRED YOU? I was about 13 when I started playing. Shelby Folmar/Guitar enjoyed “Pills” and “Open Eyes”, but the Candlebox cover, My father and all his brothers are musicians. Growing up Justin Parker/Bass “YOU” was a pleasant surprise. One song reminded me of going to his gigs is where I cut my teeth on music. Dad has Green day...lol…I’d totally go see them again. Find them on a huge impact on who I am as a musician and as a man. Josh Brooks/Drums facebook and decide for yourself. Music always affected me, (Led Zeppelin, Muddy Waters, Cream, Zappa, Phish, Moe, Keller Williams, Papa Mali, Miles Davis, Beatles blah blah blah) but playing with him was when I truly understood the point of it. IF YOU COULD JAM WITH ANYONE ALIVE OR DEAD WHO WOULD IT BE? That’s a great question. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE SONG OF ALL TIME? The next one I write. WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE LOCAL BAND? The Porch Dawgs of course! ...and the Hillbilly BBQ Band. WHAT’S YOUR POISON/DRINK OF CHOICE? Bourbon. WHY DO YOU THINK THE CHICKEN REALLY CROSSED THE ROAD?

Did you see whats over there? It’s great over there!!! WHERE ARE YOUR GIGS FOR THE NEXT MONTH? You can catch up with me and Randy Rayker every Wednesday at Thunderbird Roadhouse! Open mic jam I also stopped in at Connolly’s (51st Ave and Northern) on Tuesday night for some $1 tacos and live from 8ish to 11ish! (ask me later where we is I don't know music by Crazy Cover Keith. CONTRACTS FOR POLITICIANS By Robert Lyman I agree with a Grover Norquist style contract to uphold all promises made to their constituents during the election process, also could show their official voting record to prove they had upheld their campaign pledges, however, the root of the problem is the corrupting power of money in politics. All congressmen, and senators and even our supreme court have been bought by very wealthy campaign donors and gifts, all which favor legislation to the contributors, how many lobbyists do the poor and the unemployed have fighting and giving gifts to you in Washington? Ever wondered why it will take 1 billion dollars to become President this year, do you think those who contributed the dollars would want something in exchange?

If we can get a ruling to on repeal Citizens United in the bought off Supreme Court, that would bring the elections back to a level playing field not influenced by lobbyist for special interest from large corporations Pharma, oil gas co’s etc. Look at the GETMONEYOUT.COM site or MOVETOAMEND.ORG for details on how we can get the assholes to do the work of the people, not the highest bidder. Keep up the good work, keep the billiard guys thinking.

The 2011-2012 Lucasi Hybrid Cues All American Tour – presented by the American CueSports Alliance (ACS) – held its eighth stop at Krugz Pool Hall in Muscatine, IA, Saturday, October 22. The $500-added 8-ball handicapped tourney on 7-foot Valley bar boxes drew 29 players. The A-side was completed with Daryl Ostwinkle (rated a “4” on a regional rating system used) upending Rod Flenoi [6] (E. Moline, IL) and Scott Hargens [6] (Cedar Rapids, IA) outpointing John Gorsch [5] (Cedar Rapids, IA) in the semi-finals. Hargens then claimed the hot seat with a finals win over Ostwinkle. Thereafter Hargens was called away on an emergency, and it was agreed to award him first-place money and second-place in the standings. So with the title still up in the air, all attention went to the B-side. Ron Martin [6] (Moline, IL) eliminated Whitey Walker [7] (Keokuk, IA) at 7th place, and Tim Krause [5] (Clinton, IA) tied Walker after a loss to Josh Johnson [7] (Bettendorf, IA). Martin and Johnson continued their winning ways in the next round by knocking out Rod Flenoi and John Gorsch respectively at 5th place.

Martin then defeated Josh Johnson at 4th place and Daryl Ostwinkle at 3rd place. As the last man standing, Ron Martin claimed the event title! By virtue of Ronnie Martin being the highest-finishing ACS member in the event, he qualified for a free 9-Ball singles entry into the 2012 Lucasi Hybrid ACS Nationals at the Tropicana Las Vegas – courtesy of the ACS. The ACS wishes to thank sponsors Lucasi Hybrid Cues, Championship Billiard Fabric and Nick Varner Signature Cases for their support in donating “Value-InKind” product for this and all stops on the Lucasi Hybrid All American Tour. Sponsorship opportunities and tour stop openings are still available for the 2011/2012 All American Tour by contacting the ACS. The Tour stays in Iowa for its ninth stop: a $500 added 8-Ball Tourney at Legends Sports Bar in Clinton, IA on Saturday, October 29 (contact David Holmes at 563243-4266). REBECCA WAGNER WINS AT STINGER’S! -By Tres Kane, October 14, 2011

Saturday, October 8th, at Stinger’s in Glendale, was the place to be for women’s 8-ball on the ten Diamond 7’ tables. It was the fifth stop on the 2011 Arizona Women’s Billiard Tour, but the first time that Stinger’s had held an event. Owner’s Dale Hanson & Dana Micelli and staff, were more than willing to accommodate all of our needs. Stinger’s is a very spacious room with twelve 7’ tables, great food and a full bar to settle the nerves. In addition, between matches, you could partake in offtrack betting, social poker, or watch sports on the many large screens throughout the bar. Saturday began with 21 gals playing 8-ball using BCAPL rules. The races were to 5 on the winner’s side and race to 3 on the loser’s. The women’s play was excellent all day with many run-outs on the ‘tight pocketed’ tables. When the balls did tie up the players used skillful but aggressive tactics to open things up and the matches moved along rapidly. This delighted the tournament director who had visions of 45 minute games with lots of bunting on the last three balls. Congratulations to the entire field on some great 8-ball play. The final four on the winner’s side Sunday had Arizonan Susan Williams trying to make her way through three road partners from Las Vegas, Stacy Allsup, Sondra Faith, and Rebecca Wagner. Stacy beat Susan 5-2 but lost the hot seat match 5-2 to Rebecca who had beaten Sondra 5-2 earlier. On the B side, because the matches had moved so swiftly on Saturday, the race was increased to 4 instead of 3. This allowed the players a little more room to get into their matches. Newcomer, Jaye Succo, had wins over Jodie Villegas 4-3 and Sondra Faith 4-0, with Sondra finishing 5th-6th. Terri Johnson-McCauley came back to the AWBT this year driving in from Farmington, New Mexico. She had a 4-1 win over Sara Miller, but was unable to get past Susan Williams, losing 4-2 and placing 5th/6th. Congratulations to Jaye Succo of Sacaton, AZ, for a super 4th place finish in her first AWBT event. Susan, with her win over Jaye, now faced the two ladies, Rebecca and

Stacy, that between them, have won all four prior 2011 AWBT events. In a tense match, Susan won 4-2 over Stacy. Another great finish for Stacy, who in 4 tournaments has two 1st’s, a 3rd and a 5th place finish. The final match was rather anti-climactic as Rebecca won 6-4 and claimed her third title of the year! For Susan there is always next month at Bullshooters and a chance to break the stranglehold these ladies from Las Vegas have put on the AWBT this year. The 2nd Chance Tournament was won by newcomer Cindy Yazzie, also from Farmington, New Mexico. Leandrea Gaff won 2nd place money. Thanks to all the ladies who came back on Sunday to play in the 2nd Chance Tournament! Congratulations to Jodie Villegas who said it was the first time in seven years that she has made the final 8. See what practice will do for you! Thanks to Dale and his staff of Stinger’s for hosting and adding $300 to our tournament. Thanks to our secret admirer who again added $100 to the prize fund. We encourage this type of behavior. We need more sponsors! Thanks to my co-director Kristie Ortega and Scooter for another fine event. Thanks to all the new faces who came out to play. We hope you enjoyed the experience and will want to play with us again. Our next event will be held November 19th & 20th at Bull Shooters. It is our last event of the year, so let’s get all the ladies to come out and make it a GIGANTIC event! MAIN EVENT PAYOUTS:

Political Correctness The following is the supposedly 2007 winning entry from an annual contest at Texas A&M University calling for the most appropriate definition of a contemporary term. This year’s term was Political Correctness. The winner wrote: “Political Correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.”

SPOOKY BLUES MINI–FEST

AWESOME SUCCESS!

The 1st semi-annual Blues MiniFest at Thunderbird Roadhouse hit the top of the charts on Saturday, October 29th, 2011…and the winner was…THE WOUNDED WARRIORS PROJECT!

With a packed house and a full outside parking lot, the blues hit Thunderbird Roadhouse like a fire storm, all for the benefit of our heroes, the brave men and women of our military. Food drinks and the Blues as only Leon J, Blues Review, Juke Joint, Hans Olson, Scotty Spenner, Americana Crossroads, Dirt Road Music Express and Sal Carlino & the Strayhounds could deliver and deliver they did.
