Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone, I’m still in shock as to where the year 2011 went! Let’s all remember the reason for the season and give thanks for the gifts we’ve been given. Let’s not judge others lest we be judged. For a minute be the other person! When I teach or preach or whatever it is I do, I like to think I’m helping you think beyond yourself. We have so many Christmas charities, drives and rides to support, pick one, heck pick a few, let your heart guide you as you share what you can. God bless you with every gift you give to help others. Pool and Darts, are we moving forward, backward or standing still? With so many bars, rooms and lounges having a tough time, have we explored ways to rejuvenate our sports to help bring new life and excitement into our bars and rooms? Do our bars and rooms need to reevaluate the services they provide to the players; should their drink list include more specialty drinks, other than alcoholic beverages? Should Starbucks, Hook-ah lounges, social clubs, poker houses and the like be stealing our customers right under our noses? People pay $3.00 and up for a cup of coffee, and we sell a beer for a buck or two. I wonder if a dart or pool player could play while drinking a cup of coffee or a specialty drink. Could a good business man or woman cater to the drinker and the social person, wishing only to socialize with others while playing our sports?
the like to organize pool and dart leagues and tournaments? I think by now we should have figured out that we need to make other reasons besides drinking booze, for people to hang out at our bars, as times have changed. I’m not sure what, “what I’m talking about” would look like when you walked into a bar as such but, I’m sure if we don’t start thinking about it we may not have to worry about it. We have a lot of great places (bars) to socialize in, am I wrong in thinking everything is centered around the booze and not the socializing? Or is it that it is only booze that is served in the bars, and the customers only has two choices, take it or leave it. If poker, pool, darts, karaoke and other customers aren’t buying your product could it be that you need to expand your products to give them a broader choice to spend their money on. I wonder what would happen if I went into a bar and bought a bottle of Powerade for $2.50 (which the bar was selling) and enjoyed sitting around talking to my friends while they were drinking a beer, would the roof fall in? Or do I have to drink a glass of FREE water because there is no alternative? I like the damn bar but I don’t want to get drunk all the time so give me choice so I can stay!
Now you would have to be a complete idiot to think I’m knocking the bars, I love the bars and I’m afraid they are going to disappear if we don’t change with the times, times are changing. It would be unheard of for a bar to sponsor a NON-DRINKING pool or dart league UNLESS…picture 60 or more people drinking $3.00 Do a beer and a shot have to go to $5.00 cups of coffee or… yes… with a game of pool or darts? keep thinking. Are we being too hardcore with our bars and not moving forward with the times? Are we waiting for Starbucks or other coffee shops or

The 2011-2012 Lucasi Hybrid Cues All American Tour – presented by the American CueSports Alliance (ACS) – featured its twelfth (12) stop at Match-Ups in Ft. Collins, CO on Thanksgiving weekend, Nov. 26-27. Sixty-four (64) players from Colorado, Minnesota and Wyoming, descended on the host site for the annual $1000.00 added “Turkey Shoot.” This event has featured a full field over the past few years. On hand were many of Colorado’s finest. As the field was set for the first round matches, Denver favorite Mark Haddad [reigning champ] started his journey thru the winners side with wins over D. Gonzalas, Ritchie Cunningham, Emil Cowboy and Chuey Rivera. Meanwhile on the lower half of the bracket, local Dalton Zerlan was pushing his way through with wins over S. Kuntz, Greg.Romero, Kiko and John Sandifer to face off with Haddad for the winners side “hot seat.” It appeared to be a “David\Goliath” upset in the making as Zerlan jumped out to a 5-0 lead [race to 6]. Haddad, being the seasoned player he is, stayed focused and
played flawlessly to rebound for a 6-5 victory to advance to the point position. The loss to Haddad put Dalton Zerlan into the loser’s bracket, where he disposed of Emil Cowboy to gain another shot at the Haddad. The fairy tale of David slaying Goliath was not in the felt, as Haddad ruled in the finals to retain his title. The ACS wishes to thank hosts Nicole & Mike Hellmer, tournament director Gary Andrews and sponsors Lucasi Hybrid Cues, Championship Billiard Fabric and Nick Varner Signature Cases for their support and donating “Value-In-Kind” product for this and all stops on the Lucasi Hybrid All American Tour. Sponsorship opportunities and tour stop openings are still available for the 2011/2012 All American Tour by contacting the ACS. The Tour returns to the Midwest on Saturday, December 3, with a $300 added 8-Ball Tourney at Krugz Poolhall in Muscatine, IA (contact Steve Krueger at 563272-8733). Further information, entry details and schedules for the 2011/2012 Lucasi Hybrid All American Tour are available at www.americancuesports.org.

YOUR NAME AND/OR THE NAME OF YOUR BAND: International musician / producer, Ian Falgout. BRIEFLY DESCRIBE YOUR BAND/MUSIC: I have had the opportunity to tour and record with so many legendary players in all genres of music. From classical in school and drum corps to my roots from south Louisiana playing funk and second-line with the greats, to classic rock with the greats who wrote them and modern rock and doing the whole MTV thing. I have had a chance to play so many types of music. I DO love a good swamp groove BUT there is nothing like a high energy, loud rock song in front of a few thousand screaming bodies! HOW OLD WERE YOU WHEN YOU LEARNED TO PLAY AND WHO INSPIRED YOU? I started banging on pots and pans at the age of 2 and was nicknamed "Bam Bam". I officially started in the school band at Holy Cross Elementary in Louisiana in the 3rd grade. I have always been a singer and did the normal routine of starring in the school plays and vocal ensembles.
IF YOU COULD JAM WITH ANYONE ALIVE OR DEAD WHO WOULD IT BE? Drawing from so many influences, that is a tough one. One person would definitely be Louis Armstrong...just to be on stage with someone of such charisma. His way of arranging songs was the very beginning of pop arrangements, even though in a jazz setting. He was of the first, real iconic "rock stars". Being born and raised just outside of New Orleans, everyone loves Satchmo. A short list would be Elvis, Steve Perry, Little Richard (my friend and mentor, the legendary Earl Palmer cut most of the hits with Little Richard and would be a great homage to play those songs with him), and ANY Beatle. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE SONG OF ALL TIME? Oddly, though I am known as a rock guy, the one song that hits me in so many different ways and can make me "tear up" most times when I really sit and listen to it, is Louis Armstrong's version of "What A Wonderful World." As a producer, I try to get artists to EMOTE on tape...that is one of the finest examples of hearing emotion on a recording...I BELIEVE what he is singing. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE VENUE TO PLAY AT IN AZ? Comerica, the old Dodge Theatre in Phoenix. Big, clean and always had good crowds when I’ve played there with a few different artists. Just a nice setup for artists.
Tamii’s “Catch” Winner
8
WHAT’S YOUR POISON/DRINK OF CHOICE? Not to sound too cliché, but PATRON first and a good, aged, single malt scotch. WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER TO BE THE BEST SONG YOU PERFORM? I have always loved playing the song, "Just Maybe" with Windsor. High energy, lots of drums and a crowd favorite. WHY DO YOU THINK THE CHICKEN REALLY CROSSED THE ROAD? ..Cause he smelled a damn good gumbo being cooked across the street! WHERE ARE YOUR GIGS FOR THE NEXT MONTH? Been in studio more than anything as of late producing and developing a great new band, Frequency and in pre-production for producing and co-writing for Buzzy Gruen's (Point Blank, Chuck Rainey) solo release. Buzzy is a legend, having spent 6 major label albums, all gold and a top 20 hit in "Nicole" in 1981. Guests on the CD will include Grammy winning percussionist Jose Rossy (Weather Report, Labelle, Talking Heads, and Robert Palmer) and Chuck Rainey (Steely Dan, Aretha Franklin). I am busy demoing my own material as well for the band KitShicker and will be recording new tracks for Windsor and talking about reuniting with Christian Love (son of Mike Love of Beach Boys and current guitarist for the Beach Boys) for

some of his solo material. DO YOU READ TABLE TALK AND DART STARR NEWSPAPERS? Thanks to you, YES! DO YOU PLAY PRIVATE PARTIES AND ARE YOU AVAILABLE FOR BOOKING? I will do SELECT shows, but as with ANY musicians, we are always available for something! With all-star lineups or just me with an acoustic guitar and voice, I am a whore like anyone else! We, all have a price! Contact me at iangroove@live.com or www.myspace.com/iangroove or Google “Ian Falgout”. Ian is currently producing and developing the band, Frequency, from Durango, Co. and performing with the Brian Flynn All-Stars which includes Brian Flynn (Sammy Hagar), Jay Johnson (Blackfoot, Rossington Collins Band, Radio Tokyo), Jose Rossy (Labelle, Talking Heads, Weather Report), Mike Estes (Lynyrd Skynyrd, Blackfoot) and Buzzy Gruen (Point Blank, Chuck Rainey) as drummer and lead singer. Ian is endorsed with Taye drums, Ahead Drumsticks, Flix Sticks and brushes, Evans Drumheads, Stagg Cymbals and Cases, EMD Music, HQ Percussion, Pure Sound snare wires, and Jaded and Hated Clothing (Phoenix, AZ).

Hello readers, I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving…I spent the first couple weeks of November in Colorado! I got to see some family, friends and SNOW (ewww). It’s great to be back in Phoenix, though it was very cool seeing my loved ones. HI DAD!
I got to visit the Pagosa Bar in Pagosa Springs, Colorado, across from the beautiful river walk. It’s a cozy old place with smiling faces, indoor smoking, ice cold beer and fun, friendly bartenders. Thank you Linda and Benji for serving me and making me feel at home!
Hi Linda!
Luckily, against all odds, I made it back to Phoenix in time to see “CROOKED GRIN” play on Wed., November 23rd at The Blooze. I was in desperate need of some kickass live music again, and they reminded me of why I love my city so much. Great music! The dance floor was packed, they ROCKED that place! I highly recommend them!
Then on Saturday, Nov. 26th, it was finally time for the big show I’ve been waiting for, Sectas and St. Madness at Joe’s Grotto! Two of my all-time favorite local metal bands, I’d looked forward to this show for a month… and it was even better than I expected it to be. If you love metal, then this is a combination to DIE for. My neck’s gonna hurt for a week. They should both be national acts, and if you don’t believe me, then ask any of their many, many devoted fans.

BILLIARD FUN FACTS
→ No one knows exactly who, (and some wool/nylon blends are when or where the first Pool Tables was built. The earliest documented record of a Pool Tables was made in 1470. In an inventory of the possessions of King Louis XI of France, his table was said to have contained the following: a bed of stone, a cloth covering, and a hole in the middle of the playing field, into which balls could be driven.
→ Harvey Hendrickson probably
made as much money as anyone with his “limited” skills at the Pool Tables. He actually toured the country and amazed audiences. Not with his ability to run racks or pocket balls, but with his freakishly unique ability to pick up and hold 15 billiard balls at once using one hand.
→ What is billiard cloth made of?
Amazingly, the main component of billiard cloth has remained unchanged for over 400 years. Wool was used in the 1500’s, and remains the fabric of choice today. It has, of course, undergone some perfecting
also produced).
→ The word “cue” is derived from
the French queue, meaning tail. Before the cue stick was designed, billiards was played with a mace. The mace consisted of a curved wooden (or metal) head used to push the ball forward, attached to a narrow handle. Since the bulkiness of the mace head made shots along the rail difficult, it was often turned around and the “tail” end was used. Players eventually realized this method was far more effective, and the cue as a separate instrument grew out of the mace’s tail.
→ Behind the eight-ball – A
dangerous position from which it is unlikely one can escape. From a version of the game of pool. The balls are numbered and must be potted in order. The game is forfeited if a player’s cue ball hits the (black) eight-ball first. A “behind the eightball” position leaves a player in imminent danger of losing.

The 2011-2012 Lucasi Hybrid Cues All American Tour – presented by the American CueSpor ts Alliance (ACS) – held its thirteenth stop at Krug’z Pool Hall in Muscatine, IA, Saturday, December 3. The $300-added 8-ball handicapped tourney on 7-foot Valley bar boxes drew a full 32-player field. The tourney finals featured Ron Pluym (Dubuque, IA) [rated a “6” on a regional rating system used] and Oscar Perales Jr. [8] (Muscatine, IA). Throughout the A-side Pluym outpointed Tracy Hoerrmann, Steve W., Jim Tipps, Rusty Clester and Oscar Perales Jr. Previous to his loss to Pluym in the A-side finals, Perales vanquished Miranda Krueger, Steve Krueger, Tony Torres and James Miller. Oscar recovered in the B-side finals by eliminating James Miller. But the tourney finals went Ron Pluym’s way in the first set against Perales for the title!
By virtue of Ron Pluym being the highest-finishing ACS member in the event, he qualified for a free 9-Ball singles entry into the 2012 Lucasi Hybrid ACS Nationals at the Tropicana Las Vegas – courtesy of the ACS. The ACS wishes to thank sponsors Lucasi Hybrid Cues, Championship Billiard Fabric and Nick Varner Signature Cases for their support in donating “Value-InKind” product for this and all stops on the Lucasi Hybrid All American Tour. Sponsorship opportunities and tour stop openings are still available for the 2011/2012 All American Tour by contacting the ACS. The Tour stays in Iowa for its fourteenth stop: a $500 added 9-Ball Handicapped Tourney at Legends Sports Bar in Clinton, IA on Saturday, December 10 (contact David Holmes at 563-243-4266). Further information, entry details and schedules for the 2011/2012 Lucasi Hybrid All American Tour are available at: www.americancuesports.org.

Naturally I needed something to impress the natives, so I got the new Dodge Challenger SRT. This year the old 425 horsepower 6.1 liter V-8 engine has been replaced with a 6.4 liter Hemi putting out about 480 horses. This baby moves. With the 5-speed automatic tranny, traction control

“on” and the shifter left in drive, I got 0-60 in 4.63 seconds! There is a 6-speed manual gearbox offered, but a strong engine like this works better with an automatic, I think. Gas mileage is rated at 14-22 mpg with premium blend. The steering, handling, and braking performance are excellent for a two-ton machine. The ride quality is comfortable, a nice car for long trips. Well almost, as that small gas tank hits empty fast. This is a big car, with a big trunk, but only room for four people inside. The base Challenger with V-6 engine starts about $26,000. But this SRT was loaded up with everything, and hit a whopping $49,810! Wow! But when you hit the gas, you know you got your money’s worth.

AAA Invitational Results
Well the 2nd annual AAA Invitational is over and in the books. This year’s turnout was very light, to say the least. We had to postpone the event twice and then we scheduled it down too close to the Thanksgiving holidays trying to give everyone a chance to be here for the event and the combination of these things made for a low attendance. I promise we will have the word out early and schedule the next one in early spring when there is nothing else going on in the leagues. For the ones who came out to support the event, “Thank you very much and we look forward to seeing you next year.” Next year this event will be opened up to the whole state of Arizona. As of right now the plan is to hold the 3rd annual around March or April. Be on the lookout for posters, Billiard papers and web sites for the dates, also check with your league operators and ask them to include your names on their lists of participants. For you lower ranked players we have a place for you also next year. In the fall we will be holding a tournament for all league
14
players who are 5’s and below. We need to spotlight these upcoming new players in the leagues and give them a format for their skills to shine. Look for this one, it should be very interesting. This year we had representation from the UPA and BCA leagues. We look forward to having all the other leagues included next year. Let’s make this the best showcase for the talents of all our loyal league players. First place this year goes to Rico Gonzalez, from the Arizona Hot Shots League, and was awarded $200.00 and a winner’s plaque. The second place honors go to Adam Hurst who came in from Prescott Valley. This award was $100.00 and a 2nd place plaque. With Rico’s win, the AAA League Trophy goes, once again, to Larry Earns of the Arizona Hot Shots League. Come on guys, this is 2 years in a row. Let’s give Larry and the BCA some serious competition next year. Have a great holiday season. We will see you all next year. Be safe and enjoy the rest of 2011. -Chuck Webb

REBECCA WAGNER WINS AWBT 2011 TOUR CHAMPIONSHIP
Rebecca Wagner won the final stop of the Arizona Women’s Billiard Tour (AWBT) 2011 season with her finals win over Kristin Haney, 9-5. This event was held at Bull Shooters in Phoenix, on November 19th & 20th. Rebecca was nearly unstoppable this year with four wins and a 7th-8th place finish in the five tournaments she played this season. This win crowned Rebecca as the AWBT 2011 Points Champion and gives her the opportunity to compete in the Women’s Professional Billiards Association (WPBA) tour in 2012.
The tournament started Saturday with twenty-four women. The AWBT point championship was still to be decided. Several players had a chance at the crown if they could win this event and Wagner made an early exit. Tournament director, Tres Kane, announced at the player’s meeting there would be a $30 bounty for anyone who could win a match against Ms. Wagner. This was motivation for the AZ ladies to break the strangle hold the Las Vegas ladies have put on the AWBT title this season. In the 3rd round, Susan “Mad Hatter” Mello, claimed the bounty as she sent Rebecca to the loser’s side with a 7-1 trouncing. With this win, she joined Terri Johnson-McCauley, Kristin Haney and Stacy Allsup for Sunday’s final four on the winner’s side. Though down, Rebecca was not out as she beat Justine Bishop 7-4 to come back and play on Sunday as part of the final four on the one-loss side. Joining her would be Sara Miller, Susan Williams and Susan Wilbur. Sunday’s play began with Kristin Haney defeating Terri Johnson-McCauley 7-5 and then going on to win the hot seat with a 7-2 win over Stacy Allsup. Rebecca was working her way back through the loser’s bracket by eliminating Sara Miller 7-3 (7th-8th), Terri Johnson-McCauley 7-2 (5th6th) and Susan Williams 7-3 (4th). The next opponent for Rebecca would be Stacy Allsup. These two Las Vegas ladies have won all five previous stops this season. These two champions started their match with some uncharacteristic sloppiness. But as the match progressed, Rebecca became more focused, accurate and came away with a 7-4 win and a lock on the AWBT point’s title. Congratulations to Stacy on a great season: two wins, two 3rd place finishes and a 4th place finish in five tournaments. Awesome young lady!
2011 FINAL POINT STANDINGS
Kristin Haney got into her 2nd tournament final with her deadly accurate shooting and fierce competitiveness. She would need all of it as she now faced Rebecca in the one match final race to 9. They traded the first two games but Rebecca began to take full advantage of Kristin’s misses and ran out to a big lead. Nearing the finish line, Rebecca ‘stubbed her toe’ to close it out and allowed Kristin a few more games. In the end, it was an easy 9-5 win and her 4th tournament win this season. Congratulations to Kristin Haney on another great 2nd place finish. Congratulations to our AWBT 2011 Tour Champion Rebecca Wagner! This season, you have set the standard high and have given our ladies a goal to strive for.

In the ‘free’ 2nd Chance Tournament, held on Sunday, Leandrea Gaff took it down earning $100.00 for 1st place. Coming in 2nd place was Pat Shultz pocketing $60.00. And finishing in 3rd place, grabbing $30.00, was Las Vegas’ Sondra Faith. Thanks to all eight ladies who came back to compete in the 2nd Chance Tournament on Sunday.
Thanks to Chris Paradowski, of Tucson, for adding to the ‘Rebecca Wagner bounty’ of this event. (Rebecca Wagner claimed the 2nd half of the bounty by winning the tournament) Thank you to our “secret sponsor” for their $100.00 added to every prize fund this season. We encourage this behavior. We need more sponsors! Thanks to my co-director, Kristie Ortega. Thanks to Sunday’s ‘Birthday Boy’ Scooter Waterhouse. Everyone enjoyed the cake!

"LEAGUE OF CHAMPIONS"
→ The Hustler was based on a prosthetics), he studied medicine novel by Walter Tevis. The novel, however, was based on a short story he had earlier submitted to Playboy. Before “The Hustler” was released, the “Philco TV Theater” aired an episode called “Goodbye, Johnny”, which bore an uncanny resemblance to the Playboy short story. In it, Cliff Robertson portrayed the cocky young hustler, making Robertson – not Newman – the original “Fast Eddie” Felson. → Marquetry – the art of making pictures or designs with thin slices of wood, shell or other materials – has long enhanced the beauty of tables and cues. The art form is hardly a recent development. It has been practiced in Egypt and the Orient for more than 3,000 years. → Many handicapped people have played the game of pool, but the story of “Handless George” Sutton is truly one of inspiration. Born in 1870, Sutton lost both hands in a sawmill accident at the tender age of eight. Despite his handicap (and long before the days of advanced
and graduated from the University of Milwaukee. During his college years, he took up the game of billiards. He became so proficient, he set an 18.2 Balkline world record with a run of 799, in 1921. He took his playing skills on the road, touring the country and amazing audiences for nearly 35 years. He left an everlasting legacy – the resolve of the human spirit – upon his death, in 1938. → Before the invention of celluloid and other new-age plastics, billiard balls were made out of ivory. The elephants can thank their present existence on the invention of plastics. Because billiard balls had to be cut from the dead center of a tusk, the average tusk yielded only 3 to 4 balls. → In 1586, the castle of Mary, Queen of Scots, was invaded and captured. The Invaders made a note of forbidding her the use of her Pool Tables. They then killed her, and used the covering of the table to cover her body.
