It been a long hot summer already and it’s just getting started! What am I to do, “suck it up baby” as my good friend would say! Well, that’s about all we can do, or is it? Maybe not, first do all the serious things like drink a lot of water, watch your kids and animals around water and DON’T leave them for a second in the car while you JUST run into that store or wherever. Remember the ground wherever you are is HOT (hello) it’s a thousand degrees out there. Everything outside is HOT be careful and think about it. I’m working on some great things for the papers, first off you can see I bit the bullet and went to FULL COLOR, I believe this will help my clients and make our papers much more attractive to our readers and potential readers. This is a good place to remind our readers AGAIN that these are YOUR papers; I expect pictures, articles, announcements, things of interest to be emailed or sent to me. I’ve always been open to everyone. When you, a friend, teammate, family member or someone special accomplishes something to be recognized let us know. Being a small independent variety newspaper we expect our community to let us know what’s happening out there. I’ve told the pool and dart leagues for years they are missing the boat with all the chicken shit politics out there by not sending me their player accomplishments, it’s not fair to your players not to give them the recognition they earned. This would not only promote your leagues and the good bars your players play out of but also our sports. We try to hard to have a variety of advertisers to bring the players and readers specials and ways to save money. We are a NEWSPAPER not a league or tournament newsletter! If you want to reach people in and OUT of the box HERE WE ARE. You want more teams, visit our advertisers and invite them to put a team together, don’t just chase each others people. I’m getting lots of attention on the “snap a crack to save bikers back” campaign. If we don’t do something about these God awful roads in Arizona we are going to lose a hell of a lot of brothers while everyone blames poor riding habits and biker error. So take a minute to “snap a crack to save a bikers back” We welcome our new advertisers and promise we will always do our best to promote and support your businesses as we have been for more than 23 years and we thank our advertiser for supporting us. Dr. Jack

This month there is $50 bucks hidden and waiting for you to find it. WE HAVE THE HOTTEST, SEXIEST BOSS EVER

And we are not paid to say that, and that’s our story and we are sticking to it! Secretly Jeff is one of the best bosses ever say the girls at the Riff Raff Bar and Restaurant, but they don’t want him to know that, so keep that just between us, ok? If there’s one thing I see at the Riff Raff Bar it is they sure have a good time. Stop by and watch the action between the girls and the boss (so he thinks he is)… it’s more fun than the other entertainment. We’ll see you there!

TammyZ Band is a folk/alt. country/acoustic rock

band consisting of Tammy Zappier, Sarah Clinebell, Rusty Catana and Phil Rogers. I’ve had the pleasure of hearing them play at “CHICKSTOCK”, Hard Rock Café and Thunderbird Roadhouses’ open mic and they always put a smile in my soul. TammyZ breathes new life into tired cover tunes and captivates ones’ attention with catchy originals, such as “Reminder”, “Memories”, and my favorite, “Shoestring Budget”. Tight harmonies and bouncy acoustic guitar rhythms will lighten your spirit and have you tapping your feet in no time. TammyZ Band is currently competing in Chicks with Picks Battle of the Bands, which will be judged on September 8th, for more information or to vote please go to www.tinyurl.com/tammyz. To check them out live, attend a show in August at:

On Tuesday, July 26th, the TammyZ Band rocked the halftime festivities for the Phoenix Mercury vs. Seattle Storm game. Their performance was part of the ongoing Battle of the Bands being promoted by local promoting group, Chicks with Picks. While the band’s set was short and sweet by consisting of only two songs, it certainly did not lack on great musical ability! The band started off their set with a cover by 60’s rock group, Creedence Clearwater Revival, and then… -Butch Maloney

CACTUS CHAINSAW: As I sit here listening to the four songs on Reverbnation, with last nights show still fresh in my mind, I just can’t decide which one I like best, so I just keep listening. Over and over. Every song has me transfixed and conjures up dark images in my head. It could be “Brute Force Mentality” but I also love “Find”... You will be hypnotized… What genre of music is it? Hell if I know. Is it Blues? Metal? Southern? Hard rock? Aggro? Desert hillbilly metal? It’s dark, brutally heavy, grievous and hard to describe without using the “F-word”. I’d say their name describes them best. And their live show will entertain you til your ears bleed…okay, not really but if you’ve never seen them you’d best check ‘em out, I’ll probably see you there. BEER FACTS OF THE MONTH Bottle caps, or “crowns,” were invented in Baltimore in 1892 by William Painter. Painter proved his invention’s worth when he convinced a local brewer to ship a few hundred cases of beer to South America and back and they returned without a leak. Beer advertising matchbook covers have become sought-after collectibles on Internet auction sites. A 1916 matchbook promoting Brehm’s Brewery in Baltimore brought $43, while a 1930s cover promoting Eastside Beer from Los Angeles went for $36.

Proudly Sponsored by

Beer and video games have a long association. Tapper, originally a 1983 arcade game and now a computer one, tests players’ skills by challenging them to coordinate the movements of beers, a bartender, empty mugs, and patrons. An 18-year study by the National Institute on Aging found that 50-plus men who consumed a drink a day during middle age scored significantly better on cognitive tests later in life than did non-drinkers.

In ancient Babylon, women brewers also assumed the role of temple priestesses. The goddess Siris was the patron of beer. On October 17 of 1814, a rupture in a brewery tank containing 3,500 barrels of beer caused a flood of fatal proportions in the London parish of St. Giles. The wave of beer swept victims off their feet, dashed them against walls, and buried them under debris. Two houses were demolished in the sea of beer suddenly loosed upon town, and nine people lost their lives in the flood of suds.

Almighty Aly Secures Third U.S. National Snooker Title Ahmed Aly has created snooker history in the United States by becoming the first player to win three successive United States National Snooker Championship titles, after his victory over Ajeya Prabhakar in this year’s final at the Prince Snooker Club in Brooklyn, New York. Tom Kollins, who came close to defeating Aly in the quarterfinals of this Championship, still holds the record of five titles but the Chicagoan never won three of those consecutively. In what was a repeat of the 2009 final also staged at the Prince Snooker Club, Prabhakar appeared to be drained as a result of his earlier semifinal tussle,

and this was reflected in his play as the 31-year-old former Egyptian national player, who now resides in Brooklyn, comfortably took the first two frames assisted by a break of 54 in frame two. Former champion Prabhakar, who had a very successful campaign on this year’s United States Snooker Association (USSA) Tour in winning three events, picked up his performance in the next frame though as he fired in breaks of 56 and 40 to trail 2-1. However Aly took a 3-1 advantage into the mid-session interval after comprehensively securing frame four, and on the resumption of play his confidence grew as he compiled an excellent break of 70 to go 4-1 ahead and needing just one more frame for victory. In that final two years ago, Aly also held a commanding 4-1 advantage only for Prabhakar to storm his way back and take it to a deciding frame. With Aly now on-the-hill it was an edgy sixth frame that went down to the final colored balls in which Prabhakar pocketed to reduce his arrears to 4-2. Aly’s nerves would have now started to jangle, particularly as Prabhakar also won frame seven on the colors, and he was in for an eighth frame clearance to level the match. However he missed the final green ball in developing the blue

off the cushion, which ultimately cost him, and Aly wrapped up the frame and match for a 5-3 victory. The USSA would like to thank all the players from the New York City area and those who came from all over the United States to compete, and also offer their many thanks and gratitude

to Tommy Chen, the proprietor of the Prince Snooker Club, for his kindness and generosity in hosting yet another wonderful Championship. Complete results are available at

www.snookerusa.com.

Dad Seemed to Know Everyone! By Dan W. Miller

Dad Seemed To Know Everyone! By Dan W. Miller One day when I was 13 my Dad asked me if I’d like to go with him to see the L.A. Open (pro golf tournament.) Sure. Why not, I thought. He had caddied there as a kid at the same golf course for the likes of the legendary golfer Sam Snead and American hero, boxing champion Joe Louis. Apparently, according to Pop, “Slammin’ Sammy” Snead relished in taking the “Brown Bomber’s” money in bets accumulated all throughout their round on the links. I insisted we follow “Arnie’s Army.” The great Arnold Palmer was well past his prime but his popularity never waned. Arnie always had a throng of hundreds of fans following him around the course as compared to the other golfer’s groups which might have a few dozen. He appeared to be genuinely enjoying a leisurely round of golf with his buddies, laughing, talking and rather oblivious to the huge crowd studying his every move. You’d swear at any moment he’d take a pull of a beer and stuff the can back into his golf bag! He sometimes puffed on a smoke between tees. On the eighth tee, The Great one blasted a drive down the fairway as the crowd “Oooohed” with amazement and roared their approval. As the applause died down, my father yelled out, “Hey, Arnie! Come on over here!” The legend looked at who said that and started strolling on over as my Dad waved him towards us! Now, this is how I learned to be amiable, how to meet strangers and also how to give respect to a celebrity while treating them like just another “Joe.”

“Hi Mr. Palmer! Glad to meet you! I’m George and this is my son Dan.” Pop confidently exclaimed. The Man shook my hand and called me by name as he said it was a pleasure to meet us. Fans around us just stood smiling or else their mouths were wide open, not bothering our conversation because clearly, it seemed like my Dad KNEW him. After making Arnold laugh and talking a bit of golf with Dad, he wrapped up the converstaion (after signing my program) by stating, “Well George, it was a pleasure to meet you and your son but if you’ll excuse me, I have to get back to work.” He turned on one foot and merrily strolled down the fairway to his next approach shot. I stood stunned and dumbfounded. I had just met one of the 20th century’s greatest athletes and truly one of the most popular and most beloved, also! People around us stared at US with reverance and envy. As I looked up from staring at the autograph on my program, I asked Dad, “Do you KNOW him, Pop?” “Oh, no. But I do now. Nice guy, eh?” The Master’s always coincides with Father’s Day and I’m always reminded of that memorable day with Dad! He was MY legend and I’ll never forget how to act in a social setting thanks to his example. Happy Father’s Day, Dad. Rest in peace.
