Happy New Year to everyone, let’s all pray that 2012 is the year of recovery, the year WE take back what belongs to us. What is that? It’s our rights and our attitudes toward happiness and success. Let us understand that we control our lives and our future, we control our country and who we allow to run it for us. My wish and hope for the new year is that WE ALL REALLY REALIZE HOW MUCH POWER WE HAVE AS A FREE PEOPLE. I pray that the people of this great country understand the power of ONE, yes ONE and that ONE is YOU! It is taking responsibility for yourself and your actions and doing what you feel deep inside is right! Right for yourself, your business and your country. Shame on our politicians, locally and nationally, shame on them for not doing what is best for our country and playing politics for their own benefit! And don’t tell me they have to play ball with each other to get things done, right is right, do the right thing. Stop all this bullshit and put people back to work and make our country whole again.

Business, well let’s talk about that! I’m going to be calling on all my old clients and new clients in this New Year and see what I can do to help them; I’ve lowered my prices for advertising and made changes in how we can finance payments better for everyone. Our newspapers have been serving the valley of the sun and Arizona for almost 25 years now, and I expect that we will be doing this for AT LEAST another 25 years, so if you’re expecting me to go anywhere forget it. If you didn’t read my December editorial please do now, it’s all about our businesses and possible ways we can improve them. Advertising is a key factor in business. It isn’t just how big of an ad you have, it’s the consistency, I believe in building your business through advertising, not just a flash in the pan. Our newspapers are the vehicles to keep your regular customers updated as to what you are doing and to excite NEW CUSTOMERS to come in for a visit and give you a chance to keep them. If you only focus on stealing customers from each other, our bar business doesn’t grow and new money doesn’t come into our bar community. I’ve watched pool rooms and bars go out of business by continuing to lower their prices on table time and booze until no one is making any money. It isn’t the prices, it’s what you are doing to attract and keep your clients. It’s the fun and camaraderie of your clients, the excitement and feeling a part of your establishment, you know… a home away from home.

We the people CAN NOT AND WILL NOT GIVE UP! Don’t read this with the writer in mind, read this with yourself in mind and what you can do for yourself and our country. Maybe we forgot what OUR COUNTRY is; it’s me, you and the people around us, your neighbor, the business down the street, it’s Call me now to take a new and the man or woman standing on fresh look at what our papers can the corner asking for help. do for you and your business.

LUCKY YOU @

LUCKY GOLD & SILVER EXCHANGE

Well, the bells have stopped and bills are a coming in as the holidays gently leave us for another year. As the snow melts or dust settles our mail boxes are filled with bills and thrills of after the holiday sales, no money you say, well I’ve spent my pay, what am I to do, then whispers the leprechaun from Lucky Gold & Silver Exchange “I’ll exchange your gold and silver for cash my laddie or lassie”, I pay the fairest in town of anyone around.

Well I’m sure you get the message from above, if your wallet or purse is a little light and the bills are coming in or you see all the after holiday sales, open your jewelry boxes or your hiding places you store your old or broken jewelry and bring it down to our friend Jim at Lucky Gold & Silver Exchange. Jim’s been around for awhile and is always fair and honest as he just buys gold and silver and pays the best prices possible, he’ll give you a quote and some advice and let you decide without any pressure. He’ll tell you to go check it out elsewhere if you’d like. I secretly think Jim may be the leprechaun but don’t tell him I said so. So for the fairest deal stop in at Lucky Gold & Silver Exchange at 35th Ave & Northern.

A LITTLE HUMOR FOR THE SOUL

Every time I walk into a singles bar I can hear Mom’s wise words: Don’t pick that up, you don’t know where it’s been! Ever notice that people who spend money on beer, cigarettes and lottery tickets, are always complaining about being broke and not feeling well No one ever says, “It’s only a game!” when their team is winning.

I don’t approve of political jokes. I’ve seen too many of them get elected. I live in my own little world but it’s OK, everyone knows me here. The closest I ever got to a 4.0 in college was my blood alcohol content. There are two sides to every divorce: Yours and Shithead’s.

SMILE YOU’RE ON CAMERA

HOW THE GAME OF DARTS CAME TO BE

Dart is a sport unique in many ways; no specific outfits required, the price of equipments for the game is moderately reasonable and little space is needed to play the game. Furthermore, gender, age and the size of the players does not in any way influence the individual’s game. Some believe and claim that dart history began when bored soldiers challenge each other by throwing their spears into turned over barrel base, that later evolved into a cut up tree trunk for target. The rings in the tree trunk turned out to be perfect for keeping scores. As winter took the game indoors, darts of shorter lengths were used and rules were created and implemented. Darts maintained its military relation during the founding and formation of the “British Empire”; soldiers use their drinking clubs and fitted dartboards extended all over the entire Empire. Citizens in different countries embraced the sport, and the British participants remained in the lead. As the habit of throwing “spears” at targets turned into a universal pastime, the dart then became regulated; normally the barrel was a piece of cut wood trunk that has a length of four inches with feathers fixed to one end and a metal tip at the other end. In 1898, a “folded-paper” target

was patented by an American and the barrel made up of metal was patented in 1906 by an Englishman. By this time, the system of numbering on the dartboard was formulated and accepted. The regulation of the throwing or tossing distance also happen at about the same time, however, there are many “standards” that are used. The “throwing distance” was indicated or marked by means of three crates placed from one end to anther from a certain brewery named “Hockey & Sons” that provided beer to the Southwest part of England. The beer crates were about three feet in length, thus the distance will be nine feet in length from the line to the dartboard. The “Hockey & Sons” crate size was ultimately decreased to two feet, and thus four crates are lined up as indication to mark the distance which is eight feet in length. This eight foot space or distance continued to be the standard pattern for several years. By the 1900’s, the game of darts and its rules was established into what is recognized and accepted today. The board size, the distance of throwing and the darts size was standardized. All over the world, many people enjoyed playing the simple sport of darts so that teams were organized to play for medals and trophies and professional clubs and associations begun. -Source: Familyfuncenter.com THE DART STARR JANUARY 2012

HOW OLD WERE YOU WHEN YOU LEARNED TO PLAY AND WHO INSPIRED YOU? My Dad. IF YOU COULD JAM WITH ANYONE ALIVE OR DEAD WHO WOULD IT BE? Unfortunately, most of the cats I wanna jam with have left us so it would have to be Jimi Hendrix, Dimebag Darrell, and Stevie Ray Vaughan...... On the upside though...my Dad is still kickin’ and I really love playing with him. WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE "CHEESY" SONG OF ALL TIME? Blister in the Sun WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE VENUE TO PLAY AT IN AZ? Jughead’s! WHAT’S YOUR POISON/DRINK OF CHOICE?

I’m not prejudice. I like all booze! WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER TO BE THE BEST SONG YOU PERFORM? Right now it would have to be "Overdrive" It’s got that Chainsaw feel and just kix ya in the teeth! YOU’VE BEEN OUT OF THE SCENE FOR A LITTLE WHILE. WHAT'S GOING ON WITH THE BAND? Well, we have replaced our singer, so that has had a huge impact on the band’s sound and direction. I think we have truly found ourselves as a band and am looking forward to writing a new CD hopefully, that should be out sometime this summer. WHERE ARE YOUR GIGS FOR THE NEXT MONTH? No gigs next month but I think were back in the mix starting in March so thanx to everyone for stickin' with us DO YOU READ TABLE TALK AND DART STARR NEWSPAPERS? Religiously! INSTRUMENT YOU PLAY: I bang skins with my wood! BRIEFLY DESCRIBE YOUR BAND/MUSIC: Creepsville666 is a mixture of glam, psychobilly, and punk, while Blood From Stone is very groovin' hard rock. HOW OLD WERE YOU WHEN YOU LEARNED TO PLAY AND WHO INSPIRED YOU? I've always been interested in drums since I first got into music when I was just a youngun', even before I was in elementary school. I on-and-off taught myself to play drums once I got serious with it, I was about nine when I got my first real kit. However, after five or six years of focusing on guitar, I decided to pick up drums for real. This was last year, hahah! When I did get into it to take it seriously, it was because I saw guys like Racci Shay, Seven Antonopoulos, Morgan Rose, Roy Mayorga, Vik Foxx, Zoltan Chaney, and Ian Shuirr do their thing, and even the guys in Mushroomhead and Slipknot. They showed me that

drumming wasn't only a musical thing, but a visual thing as well. Bands that have always influenced me were KISS (first and foremost), Green Day, Metallica, Dope, Wednesday 13, Vains of Jenna, Black Label Society, Motley Crue, and so on. IF YOU COULD JAM WITH ANYONE ALIVE OR DEAD WHO WOULD IT BE? Too many to name. Alive, all of my influences above if it were another drummer. If it were alive and someone on a different instrument, probably Mike Ness from Social Distortion or Green Day. Dead, definitely Dimebag, Eric Carr, and Peter Steele. Also Michael Jackson. I wouldn't mind being a part of his show for a night, that dude could rock it! WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE "CHEESY" SONG OF ALL TIME? Everybody by Backstreet Boys, and everything by Nickelback. Say what you will, I love Nickelback. One of the best live bands out right now. WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE VENUE TO PLAY AT IN AZ? Definitely the Marquee. Every time I play there I get excited, because I've seen the majority of my favorite and most influential bands there for years before I started making a dent in my own musical progress. WHAT’S YOUR POISON/DRINK OF CHOICE? Full Throttle, Monster Nitrous, Red Bull, Rockstar, and Coke. Have I tried them all combined together yet? No. Should I? Absolutely. Continued on next page.

WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER TO BE THE BEST SONG YOU PERFORM? With Creepsville, either the new tune Dance For Me or our cover of Take 'Em All by Cock Sparrer. With Blood From Stone, our opener Devil's Daughter. WHERE ARE YOUR GIGS FOR THE NEXT MONTH? In January I'm going to be doing a few Creepsville666 shows. January 25th at Club Red with the Stolen Babies, and January 27th with Flexx Bronco (the venue for this show has not yet been established). DO YOU READ TABLE TALK AND DART STARR NEWSPAPERS? YOUR NAME AND/OR THE NAME OF YOUR BAND: Katie Booth / Katie Booth and Company INSTRUMENT YOU PLAY: Singer BRIEFLY DESCRIBE YOUR BAND/MUSIC: My band is eclectic and my music is as well. However, I have tendencies toward the Blues!!! HOW OLD WERE YOU WHEN YOU LEARNED TO PLAY AND WHO INSPIRED YOU? I started singing with my Dad's band when I was 5 years old. I actually won a competition at the Red Carpet Inn in Waco, Texas my first time on stage. I was so scared, my Dad had me turn around and face him to sing! So, my Dad really inspired me that first year. Then, when I turned 6, I heard John Lennon and The Beatles! From that point onward, it was my Dad and John Lennon! IF YOU COULD JAM WITH ANYONE ALIVE OR DEAD WHO WOULD IT BE?

I would want to play with John Lennon!!! But, secondly, it would be nice to play on-stage with my Dad again! Maybe I'll get him out here from Texas and we can hit an open mic night! WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE "CHEESY" SONG OF ALL TIME? It would have to be "Rocky Raccoon" by The Beatles WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE VENUE TO PLAY AT IN AZ? Now, that's a tough one...I LOVE playing at the Thunderbird Roadhouse for open mic nights on Wednesdays. But, I also love to sing up at the Hideaway and the Road Runner! Pretty much anywhere they will have me! WHAT’S YOUR POISON/DRINK OF CHOICE? Not much of a drinking person. But, I have been known to have a picture of Diet Coke with a shot of Captain Morgan for flavor...no ice! I'll usually only have one because I am on my motorcycle and I prefer the shiny side up when I ride!

SELF PORTRAIT WINNERS!

RIP PICK KIM EDWARDS

Written by John Edward Bartosiak

PICK Kim Edwards, guitarist of John Bartosiak's blues band passed away last week at age 60 after suffering a heart attack at his and John's work site. They had been playing and working together 4 years now. John and Pick played heavy Chicago style blues. John says it was very difficult to move to phoenix and quickly find someone who was damn good and wanted to play blues 12 hours a day, the way I like to do it, plus put up with me. I’m glad we got to do some shows at Chopper John’s, Toso’s and the phoenix 10k at Comerica.

He loved Hendrix and turned me onto Hendrix and a super heavy style of loud rockin’ blues. After 4 years of jammin’ and all that recorded music and future plans we had, it will be tough to try and replace him or join another band right now. After teaching him the blues for 4 years he taught me the blues with one phone call. I really felt the blues for the first time with his passing. He was an awesome guitarist and person and friend and will be truly missed. John Bartosiak still plays Char’s on Monday nights and Rips on Thursdays.

Faces From The Past

“SCOOTER” BILL KING PASSES

On December 31st, 2011, our good friend and patron of Spud’s Bar & Grill passed away from burns suffered when his apartment caught fire a few days earlier. I know Bill has a daughter and our prayers and sympathy go out to her and any other family members. Bill was well liked and loved by many of the Spud’s family. He will truly be missed by us all. We all lovingly called him “Scooter Bill” as he was always arriving and leaving Spud’s riding his medical scooter. Bill was one of boys that sat around the bar talking and making up lies like the rest of us, you know “one of the boys”. He will surely be missed as one of the permanent fixtures in our old watering hole. I know there’s a cool bar in heaven above that all our ole friends end up sitting at and I’m sure someday we’ll all be sitting around talking about everyone

12

we left behind and feeling sorry for them. We miss you and love you Bill, watch that bar stool next to you up there, as I’m sure one of us will be surprising you in the future and coming home to join you. This one’s for you Bill…

WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN PURCHASING DARTS

The game of darts is a popular indoor sport. Long hours are spent practicing, for some, it becomes a much-loved hobby. Serious dart throwers join tournaments where they can win hundreds of dollars. Many different materials are used to make darts. The most commonly used material is brass. The quality of a dart directly affects how well it will perform. A dense dart will fly straighter and thus be more accurate. Types of Darts: • Brass darts • Nickel/Silver darts • Tungsten darts BRASS DARTS Brass darts are very affordable. It is a heavy material that is easily machined and is inexpensive. This is why these darts are commonly used as “house darts.” The only drawback is that brass is very soft. It is so soft the grip is likely to wear down quickly. Once the grip has worn down it changes how well the dart performs.

NICKEL/SILVER DARTS Nickel is also a heavy or dense metal that is easy to machine and is also affordable. Nickel is much harder than brass and will last through many throws before showing any wear and tear. It must be known that there is no actual silver in these darts; the manufacturers use a nickel/tin alloy, instead. TUNGSTEN DARTS These are the darts the professionals use. Tungsten darts are extremely dense with small diameter barrels. This “small diameter” means a better feel and a much improved performance. A small diameter also means a tighter grouping on the dart board, resulting in higher scores. The higher the tungsten density, the higher the quality will be. Below is an example of the price differences: • 50% to 70% - $15 - $40 • 80% Tungsten - $25 - $60 • 90% upwards of a $100 • 95% to 98% upwards of $200

Tungsten can also be manufactured with copper. However, copper produces a softer, less durable dart. For those who play in tournaments, the dart makes all the difference. Each person should have a set of 3 darts. It is not recommended to share darts as this slows the game, significantly.

SHAFTS Shafts are important, as well. These may be plastic, aluminum or composite. Plastic is inexpensive but will not last very long. Composite shafts have plastic threads, combined with aluminum or other alloys. These are very durable darts. Solid aluminum is more durable than plastic or composite. The only drawback to aluminum is that aluminum shafts are known to vibrate loose. FLIGHTS Flights are the small little wings on the end of the dart. These can be hard, nylon or soft wings. The dimplex or ribtex wings are hard flights that have been embosses with a texture. Flights do not

generate lift but only serve to stabilize the dart while in motion. The top five tips for purchasing darts are as follows. • Choose a dart that meets your specific needs • Decide how much you want to spend • Shop around for the best price • Choose a shaft that is durable • Decide which flights fit your needs and your budget With a little research, you will be able to purchase darts, confidently. If you play occasionally, a lessexpensive dart will be best. If you play in tournaments, it is best to purchase a better dart to achieve the best results. When it comes to tips, soft tip darts are used when playing an electronic dart game. Steel tips are for use on a dart board. Darts is a fun activity for the entire family. For those who are serious about the game, a wellmade, high-quality dart will make all the difference between winning and losing.

WHO GAVE YOU THOSE BLACK EYES?

A regular at Bob’s Bar came in one evening sporting a matched pair of swollen black eyes that appeared extremely painful. “Whoa, Sam!” said the bartender. “Who gave those beauties to you?” “Nobody gave them to me,” said Sam. “I had to fight like crazy for both of them.”

I’M TRYING TO PROVE A POINT...

A man drinks a shot of whiskey every night before bed. After years of this, the wife wants him to quit; she gets two shot glasses, filling one with water and the other with whiskey. After getting him to the table that had the glasses, she brings his bait box. She says “I want you to see this.” She puts a worm in the water and it swims

around the glass. She puts a worm in the whiskey, and the worm dies immediately. She then says, feeling that she has made her point clear, “what do you have to say about this experiment?” He responds by saying: “If I drink whiskey, I won’t get worms!”

In this case, we are not talking about a Ferrari This so-called convertible, in or Lambo. Yep, it’s the little Fiat reality, has a retractable soft top 500 you see in this picture. Now in the center only. That’s okay, as looking at it, you might think this is the design provides a more solid a cheapie mini-car with no power, body structure. This is a high stiff ride, and poor quality. This is quality setup, with lots of padding and sound insulation. At $4,000 extra, it should be! Rear vision is slightly blocked with the top down, depending on your height. Short people may have a problem with this.

what I suspected at first, but after driving it around for a week, I can assure you the opposite is true. This is one snazzy machine. I liked it. The engine is small, but had plenty of ability to cruise at 80 mph, and acceleration was just fine. A lot of credit can go to the sporty 6-speed automatic gearbox. Gas mileage was good at 28-32 overall. Steering, handling, and braking ability were all sporty too. Ride quality was comfortable for such a small car. The cabin looked great, although I cheated a bit by getting the optional leather trim. All controls were

Overall, this is a sophisticated European machine, and I was very impressed. The base price starts about $15,500 with hardtop roof and 5-speed manual shifter. Mine was loaded with everything; automatic, leather, soft-top, stereo, satellite radio, and more, so it just about reached the $25,000 price tag. I am sure you can find one equipped to suit your needs.
