EVERETT B. WARD, PH.D. GENERAL PRESIDENT

ADRIAN L. SCOTT, MBA ASSOCIATE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Dear Brothers and Guests of the Gamma Lambda Chapter, It is my honor to recognize and congratulate the Gamma Lambda Chapter on its Centennial as well as its BlackTie Celebration. Your commitment and efforts, both as a chapter, and men of Alpha, does not go unnoticed or undervalued. We are at a critical time in our history and find ourselves within a hostile environment, particularly for people of color and immigrants. A few months ago, the nation witnessed the senseless mass killings in Dayton, Ohio and El Paso, Texas. Within the short span of 14 hours, more than 29 people were dead or injured. White supremacy and its associated violence are finding a home once again in America, and while we bear witness to a Presidential Administration’s racist dog whistles, insensitivity, and apathy. The fight against white supremacy and intolerance will remain at the forefront of the issues that Alpha men labor with intense force, to one day see these hateful acts subdued completely. In the words of Jewel Henry Arthur Callis: “The chief significance of Alpha Phi Alpha lies in its purpose to stimulate, develop, and cement and intelligent, trained leadership in the unending fight for freedom, equality and fraternity. Our task is endless.” True to our mission, it has always been the duty of Alpha men to lead the charge against injustice as we defend and preserve our humanity. The Gamma Lambda Chapter’s efforts in the Detroit area are a proper model toward this goal.

Onward and Upward Always,

Everett B. Ward, Ph.D. General President

On this Centennial Celebration, I have no doubt that you will continue to hold Alpha to its highest ideals and standards as you have done since your chartering, as well as remain steadfast in serving as an excellent example for the entire Fraternity. Happy Centennial Anniversary and have an outstanding Black-Tie Celebration. 49TH CHAPTER PRESIDENT

GAMMA LAMBDA CHAPTER

Greetings Brothers and Guests: It is with tremendous pride and exuberance that I welcome you to tonight’s Gamma Lambda Chapter centennial gala! As the 49th president of Gamma Lambda Chapter, I have the honor and privilege of following the path of leadership laid by Bro. James L. Henderson in 1919 and the hundreds of brothers who have served in the trenches for freedom, equality and the betterment of all mankind in the city of Detroit. Tonight we pay homage to the 13 visionaries who established the third-oldest alumni chapter in Alpha Phi Alpha; we honor a legacy of leadership and service in five chapter brothers who have made indelible marks on the city of Detroit and state of Michigan, the global business community, in the legal profession and in our dear fraternity; and we culminate a yearlong celebration of Gamma Lambda’s centenary. We also salute those brothers who served in the chapter’s highest office, leading Gamma Lambda to greatness over the past 100 years. On March 22,1919, 13 gregarious gentlemen – affectionately known as our chapter founders – had the tremendous foresight, fortitude and fervent desire to establish Gamma Lambda Chapter, seated in the heart of Detroit. Since then, Gamma Lambda has been right here – entrenched in local and state politics, serving on the front lines in educating our future leaders, galvanizing the local business community and zealously providing service and advocacy on behalf of our community. To our guests, we are so honored that you would choose to share in this auspicious occasion with us! And to Gamma Lambda, today I congratulate you on 100 years of brilliant brotherhood, a long-lasting legacy of leadership and spectacular service to the city of Detroit. Here’s to the next century of developing leaders, promoting brotherhood and academic excellence, and serving as a beacon of light in the Motor City!

Fraternally,

THE GREAT MIGRATION

What reason can be assigned why we have not an Alumni Chapter in each of the larger Eastern and Middle West cities? Now is the time to awaken in each Alumnus a new interest and quicken in him a sense of his duty and the obligation to which he owes to the Fraternity.

The Black population (total and percentage) in Detroit has grown as follows: 1900 1910 1920 1930 1940 1950 1960 1970 1980 1990

… … … … … … … … … …

1914 | In the early 1900s, Black lawyers were routinely denied rental office space in certain sections of the city. Bro. Lindsay E. Johnson was forced to take a high-priced office in another part of the city. This led him to form a partnership with fellow Epsilon brother Charles H. Mahoney, a 1911 graduate of the U-M Law School, and the law firm of Johnson and Mahoney was formed.

1914 | Bro. Stephen D. Sparks was elected to the office of General Treasurer at the Seventh General Convention in Chicago, Illinois on December 29, 1914. He served during the 1915 fraternal year.

1915 | The Great Migration from the rural South began due to the mass production of autos, opportunities for work, repressive Jim Crow laws and lynchings in the south. These conditions and opportunities drove thousands of African Americans to northern cities like Detroit. The African American population in Detroit would soar from 5,000 in 1910 to almost 150,000 by 1940. Alpha Phi Alpha would emerge to address the leadership needs of our community.

1917 | The Iota Boulé of Sigma Pi Phi was founded in Detroit, Michigan. Founders and early members included Dr. Parker B. Gamble, Dr. Alexander Turner, Percival R. Piper, Atty. Oscar Baker, Dr. Peyton Johnson, Atty. Lloyd Loomis, Cornelius L Henderson, Dr. James L Henderson, and Dr. Albert Cleage.

DETROIT URBAN LEAGUE, 1921 4

1916 | The Detroit Urban League office began its work in 1916. At the time, the Detroit Urban League was a clearinghouse for social services among Black men and women, who were part of the great migration of Black families from the rural South. The first community center operated by the Detroit Urban League was the Columbia Community Center, which opened in 1919. This center was an early meeting place of Gamma Lambda prior to the purchase of the Alpha House. Bro. John C. Dancy, Jr. served as Executive Director of the Detroit Urban League 4 5

1919 | Members of the Allied Medical Society incorporated Dunbar Hospital, Detroit’s first nonprofit hospital for the Black community. This hospital, located at 580 Frederick Avenue, was named after the famous poet/novelist Paul Laurence Dunbar. The hospital was later moved to Brush and Illinois and was renamed Parkside Hospital, which operated under that name until 1962. Founding members included Dr. Alexander Turner, Dr. Parker Gamble, Dr. Frank P. Raiford, Dr. Herbert E. Simms, Dr. Moses E. Morton, and Dr. James L. Henderson.

FEBRUARY 1919 | An organization meeting with Alpha Phi Alpha alumni living in Detroit was held on February 1, 1919 at the office of Dr. Moses E. Morton and Dr. James L. Gregory at 1721 St. Antoine Street office. On account of the proximity of Epsilon Chapter at the University of Michigan, Detroit was constantly favored with the presence of many Alpha Phi Alpha Men, and as a result the city could boast of an unofficial chapter prior to its installation. Shortly after, an application for a charter was submitted to the General Organization.

White and black rioters clashed with each other, attacked lone individuals, and looted or destroyed property. Motivations for the violence were complex, rooted in economics, changing race relations, and persistent racial discrimination and fears.

MEETING BETWEEN DETROIT URBAN LEAGUE AND CITY OF DETROIT, COMMON COUNCIL 21

1960 | The Hospital Liaison Committee of the Detroit Medical Society, with the support of Bro. Remus G. Robinson, Bro. Dr. Lawrence S. Lackey and Bro. Dr. Charles Vincent helped to fight discrimination against the medical staff at Detroit area hospitals. these hospitals had all signed non-discriminatory pledges. Dr. Vincent would later serve as Assistant Dean of Admission to Wayne State University and enacted policies that resulted in Wayne being second to Howard and Meharry for educating African American physicians.

DEDICATION OF EDWARD TOLAN PLAYFIELD, SEPTEMBER 13, 1967 25

1967 | Civil unrest hit its peak in Detroit with the infamous 1967 riots. Millions of dollars in Black-owned property and businesses were destroyed due to this rebellion against excessive use of force of law enforcement personnel, unfair housing practices and economic inequality. Alpha Phi Alpha issued a statement reading:

“Black Power is a proper and necessary objective in acquiring economic power and influence… For Alpha Phi Alpha, Black Power does not mean revolution by violence, or destruction, rather it means the exercise of legitimate means to obtain control over the destiny of the Black community by Black people – that must be our concern.”

The Fraternity then called for congressional action to alleviate the suffering of 35 million Black people after declaring large scale poverty during the 60s “unjust and unnecessary”. CIVIL UNREST IN DETROIT, 1967

“On account of the proximity of Epsilon Chapter at the University of Michigan, Detroit was constantly favored with the presence of many Alpha Phi Alpha Men, and as a result the city could boast of an unofficial chapter prior to its installation” - The History of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity- Charles H. Wesley
