Dear Men of Gamma Lambda: I want to thank you for allowing the city of Detroit to host your national convention at the Detroit Marriott July 31 through August 5, 2003. I understand that this Chapter worked extremely hard to bring this event to the Motor City, however, I am not surprised that you succeeded. Our fair city has much to offer and I assure you that your fraterni ty brothers will not be disappointed.

I want you to know that your efforts have not gone unnoticed. Men of Gamma Lambda, I implore you to continue your good works. It is without hesitation that T say ynll Me the pillars of our community and excellent role :r:ode!s for our children.

Dear Distinguished Gentlemen of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity:
It is with great pleasure that I welcome the Members of your illustrious organization to the Motor
City for your 2003 annual convention. I hope that you will have a successful convention and enjoy your stay in Detroit. It has been brought to my attention that Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated is celebrating its 97th Anniversary this year. As the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity for African American college students, it is no secret that the men of Alpha Phi Alpha are dynamic, excel in myriad of areas, and have made significant contributions to American society and the world. While many men in your organization have made great contributions to society, today I would like to specifically focus on the Gamma Lambda Chapter for their fine work and pursuit of excellence in serving Detroit. Your chapter continues to uphold the vision of Alpha Phi Alpha by steadfastly standing by its founding principles of scholarship, fellowship, good character, and the uplifting of humanity. The men of Gamma Lambda have truly made a lasting impression on the city of Detroit. I am delighted that Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated has chosen to host its 97th anniversary convention in the city of Detroit. I encourage those members visiting Detroit to take advantage of the wonderful sights and sounds that the Motor City bas to offer and hope that you will visit again soon.
Best Wishes,

Congratulations on the occasion of your 97'11 Anniversary Convention. It is with a great sense of pride that! offer this congratulatory letter on behalf of the office of the Wayne County Executive and the line citii'ens of Wayne County. Your outstanding fraternity, with its impressive membership, is a sterling example of the kind of social involvement that is needed to upli flour youth of today. Your commitment to the African-American community is a vital asset of our community. Your scholarship and leadership development programs offer opportunities to some of our underprivileged youth that they may not have otherwise had. Your organization's sclOess dedication to our communities most valuable asset, our youth, spotlights an area of our society most at risk. It is important that you carry on your mission to offer mentoring, education assistance and youth counseling. In conjunction with national, programs the Gamma Lambda Chapter's efforts to instill academic excellence and social responsibility in the children, as well as. the men of the African-American community is laudable. It is of great importance to give that segment of our society the tools needed to compete and to succeed in today's competitive environment. Thank you for this oppor1unity to extend my very best wishes, as well as those of the people of Wayne County, to the Gamma Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha for a successful and enjoyable convention .

The brothers of host chapters Gamma Lambda, Alpha Upsilon, Theta Tau and Pi-Upsilon also greet you in the utmost fashion and Alpha tradition as we accept the challenge and privilege to host this 97th AnniversaryConvention. Detroit is known for putting the world on wheels and is home to the Big 3 auto plants (Ford, General Motors and DaimlerChrysler). However, Detroit is also known for the contributions of Berry Gordy's Motown R & B, George Clinton's P-Funk Rock Music, rap music, Electric Techno house music, gospel music, Jazz, the Blues, soul food, barbeque ribs, pizza, and Coney Island hot dogs! While here, be sure to visit our various museums, vast suburban shopping centers, 3 downtown casinos (and one in Windsor, Canada), Chene Park Amphitheatre, the Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts, Hart Plaza's Weekend Ethnic Festival, and also our "Jewel on the River," Belle Isle Park! Politically, Alpha Phi Alpha is represented by the presence of our city's Mayor, Brother Kwame Kilpatrick and City Councilman Brother Alonzo Bates. The Gamma Lambda Education Foundation... would 1ike to thank the 97th Anniversary Convention Host Chapter, Gamma Lambda , for its many years of support. Without your continued assistance and dedication to the principle of Scholarship, the past twenty-three years would not have been possible.
EDUCAT)ON FOUNDATEO
In 1980, the Board of Directors of the Gamma Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. charged the scholarship committee with the responsibility of raising funds for and rewarding a scholarship to a high school graduate. On February 1, 1983 the Foundation awarded scholarships to two 1983 graduates from the Detroit Public Schools. Through this mission of love, over 170 high school graduates who exude outstanding scholastk achievement, and positive and productive community involvement have received both financial and inspirational support from the Foundation. The Gamma Lambda Education Foundation continues to flourish and graciously appreciates contributions towards its fund- raising efforts to address the financial needs of the many young, gifted, and promising leaders within the Detroit metro-area community.
