The impact of Black Music extends far beyond its historical roots. It continues to shape modern genres like pop, rock, funk, soul, and electronic music. Artists such as Beyonce, Kendrick Lamar, Rihanna, and many others push boundaries, challenge societal norms, and redefine musical landscapes with their unique styles and perspectives. I hope that you consider the depth of influence of black music as you continue to discover emerging artists, or you are introduced to artists that preceed them.

A RHYTHMIC ODDYSEY
LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
Hip Hop: A Cultural Phenomenon originating in the 1970s within the Black and Afro-Caribbean communities has revolutionized not only music, but also the cultural landscape. Rooted in spoken-word poetry, DJing, breakdancing, and graffiti art, hip hop provided a platform for marginalized voices to be heard.. Artists like Grandmaster Flash, Public Enemy, KRS One, Run DMC, Tupac and The Notorious B.I.G, propelled hip hop into a global phenomenon.

As we celebrate Black Music Month and for the first time as a federal holiday, Juneteenth, I'd like to encourage people to diversify their musical interests across genres and learn about pioneers and icons they may not be familiar with. This is important to do because in spite of what a segment of the population wants us to believe, Black History IS American History and therefore, Black music is American Music. There isn't a genre of music in America that wasn't either created or improved upon by Black people. So as you listen to your summer playlist, add some Tina Turner and Niles Rogers to it. I predict that the introduction of AI, and that it allows people to edit and then share songs with a different vocalist or lyrics, is going to result in activism towards having copyright laws modified to allow artists to copyright their voices in addition to the current laws that protect music. I'm in favor of such changes, because some of what makes artists successful is the cadence and tone of their voices, not just the songwriting and production. Music is a universal language and more international artists are coming to America to perform live. AfroBeats has developed into a very notable genre for African and African American artists during the several years. With artists like Beyoncé and Brandy having hit song collaborations with AfroBeats artists, they're gaining a huge presence and recognition on mainstream platforms that highlight pop music, R&B and hip hop and at awards shows. I predict more collaborations on the horizon as African American artists become more open and connect more deeply with their culture and ancestry. In this issue we hope that you discover someone of interest whose music resonates with you and if you know of artists, songwriters and producers, who would benefit from being included in this annual publication, make sure you nominate them next year.

JUNETEENTH: A CELEBRATION OF FREEDOM & EMANCIPATION
This annual celebration, observed on June 19th, marks the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. Juneteenth serves as a reminder of the progress made in the pursuit of equality and justice, while also highlighting the work that still lies ahead.
Historical Background: On June 19, 1865, General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and proclaimed the end of slavery, effectively enforcing the Emancipation Proclamation, which had been issues by President Abraham Lincoln two and a half years earlier. This news reached the enslaved African Americans in Texas, making them among the last to be informed of their freedom. Juneteenth emerged as a day of jubilation, marking the beginning of a new era for Black Americans. Embracing Freedom and Identity: Juneteenth became a symbol of freedom, resilience, and unity within African American communities across the United States. From its roots in Texas, the celebration spread to other states and

gained prominence in the early 20th century. African Americans seized the opportunity to commemorate their ancestors struggles and achievements while affirming their cultural heritage and identity. Cultural Significance and Traditions: Juneteenth celebrations are characterized by a variety of activities that honor African American culture and heritage. Festivities often include parades, concerts, cookouts, storytelling, poetry readings, art exhibits, and historical reenactments. Traditional foods such as barbecued meats, red drinks (like hibiscus tea or strawberry soda), and soul food dishes like collard greens and cornbread are enjoyed. Additionally, educational programs, lectures, and community discussions are organized to promote awareness and understanding of African American history and achievements.
The Ongoing Struggle for Equality: While Juneteenth is a celebration of progress, it also serves as a reminder of the challenges that persist in the pursuit of equality and justice. The holiday invites conversations about systemic racism, social injustices, and the need for continued efforts to eradicate discrimination in all its forms. Juneteenth encourages society to confront its past, learn from it, and work towards a more inclusive future. Juneteenth stands as a commemoration of freedom and the ongoing struggle for equality. As a holiday that recognizes the emancipation of enslaved Black Americans, it serves as a powerful reminder of the progress made and the work that remains. DETROIT CEO MAGAZINE

OF
ARTISTS:
BARRIERS

AGE
In today’s digital age, the art world is witnessing a remarkable shift in the landscape, with independent artists emerging as a powerful force. Breaking free from traditional barriers and gatekeepers, these artists are leveraging technology and digital platforms to showcase their creativity, connect with audiences directly, and shape their own artistic destinies. Unleashing Creative Freedom: Independent artists are no longer bound by the limitations imposed by traditional art institutions and galleries. With the rise of social media, streaming platforms, and online marketplaces, artists now have unprecedented opportunities to express their unique visions and reach global audiences. They can experiment with different styles, themes, and mediums without conforming to commercial expectations, enabling a vibrant diversity of artistic expression. Direct Engagement with Audiences: One of the most significant advantages enjoyed by independent artists in the digital age is the ability to connect directly with their audiences. Through social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok, artists can share their creative journey, engage in meaningful conversations, and receive real-time feedback from followers. This direct interaction fosters a sense of community and allows artists to cultivate a loyal fan base, transcending geographical boundaries. Empowerment through Online Platforms: Digital platforms have become powerful tools for independent artists to showcase and sell their artwork. Websites, online galleries, and art marketplaces provide artists with a global storefront, giving them exposure to a vast pool of potential buyers and collectors. Additionally, crowdfunding platforms allow artists to finance their projects and connect with patrons who appreciate and support their work, bypassing traditional funding models. Challenges and Opportunities: While the digital age has opened up new possibilities for independent artists, it also presents its own set of challenges. Navigating the crowded online space and standing out amidst the noise requires strategic marketing and branding efforts. Additionally, ensuring copyright protection and guarding against plagiarism becomes crucial when sharing work online. Nonetheless, the opportunities for exposure, collaboration, and artistic growth offered by the digital landscape far outweigh these challenges.
