Chag Sameach!

It’s time to tell the Passover story!

If something amazing or cool happened in your life, wouldn’t you want to tell somebody about it? And when you looked back on it, it’d be important to you. That’s why we tell and retell the Passover story every year. The Jews leaving Egypt is a big moment in the story of the Jewish people. Ask questions and see what you can learn at your seder table!

assover is a great time to ask questions. When you have questions, who do you ask? Is it a teacher, a rabbi, your older brother or sister? Mom or dad? Put on your thinking cap and get ready to ask some interesting questions about the Passover story! The Passover story takes us through the days leading up to the Jews’ exodus from Egypt and all the actionpacked events that made our exit so significant. From Moses to Pharaoh and frogs to the splitting of the Red Sea, there’s so much to talk about.

Passover at the North House…

P

assover is a very special holiday at the North household in Oak Park. Audrey, 9, Lucy, 7, Hannah, 3 and Miriam, 4 months, are getting ready to celebrate. Their parents, Lisa and Patrick, put a lot of thought into making it fun and engaging. Last year they put Hannah in a basket, and she was baby Moses. And during the Ten Plagues, they throw marshmallows for hail, wear sunglasses when the plague is darkness, and toss plastics frogs. They have guests and share traditions, including making their own charoset like Lisa and her mom used to make.

AUDREY, 9 Passover according to Audrey: “It’s about freedom and how the Jewish people were enslaved and they got out — Hashem saved them. There were plagues, and even during the plagues, the Jewish people were still OK.” Favorite Passover food: Egg. “I dip it in salt water!” Favorite part of the Passover story: “What I like about the Passover story is how Moses was in the basket and how he was found and he was saved by Hashem.” Favorite thing about Passover: “What I like about it is that we have so many fun traditions to do. Because once I’m older I can do those with my family and that would make them happy, too.” Favorite matzah topping: Jelly.

LUCY, 7 Lucy helps her mom make the charoset for the seder, cutting the apples and putting in cinnamon. She also helps gather all the pillows in the house, including one she made, and puts them on the chairs so they can eat reclining. At the seder, she will sing the Four Questions. “I feel good about that. I sing them in Hebrew. I learned it at school.” Favorite thing to eat during Passover: Egg. Favorite matzah topping: Cream cheese Favorite Passover song: “Dayenu.” Afikomen tradition: “Whoever finds it, they get a prize; but we hide it over and over until everybody finds it, so everybody gets a prize.”

HANNAH, 3 Favorite Passover food: Grape juice. Likes: “Cooking with mommy and helping with the pillows.” What do you think Passover is about? “Freedom!”

What are your favorite Passover traditions? Words To Know

Seder – The word “seder” literally means “order.” The Passover seder has 15 steps. You’ll do many of them while you read, tell stories, eat special foods, sing and participate in special holiday traditions. Haggadah – Haggadah means “telling.” The Haggadah is a book you’ll use during the seder as you go through the story of the Jews’ exodus from Egypt. Matzah – Matzah is unleavened bread. It’s made from flour and water, and baked before it can rise. We eat it on Passover and remember that when our ancestors left Egypt, they were in such a rush that they couldn’t wait for the dough to rise.

We asked Rabbi Shneur Silberberg, who will be running the matzah factory at the JCC during its Mega Matzah Factory event, and also a traveling matzah factory at local day schools, to tell us some interesting facts about matzah. Wow your family and friends with these: 1. Matzah has to be made from start to finish in 18 minutes. That means the time from when the water and flour touch one another until it comes out of the oven has to be less than 18 minutes! 2. In matzah bakeries where they make handmade matzah, the oven is so hot that the matzah is in the oven for less than 30 seconds! 3. Ever heard of shmurah matzah? It’s “guarded matzah” — from the time the wheat is harvested in the field through baking, extra care is taken to make sure it doesn’t come into contact with water and the wheat doesn’t turn into leaven. 4

M

aking positive changes! Passover teaches that with God’s help you can break free from negative elements of your life, explains Rabbi Shneur Silberberg. “The essential message of Passover is the message of freedom and that we have different things in our lives that hold us back,” he says. “In every generation, one should see themselves going out of Egypt.” Is there something you’d like to change this Passover? Something you’d like to leave behind about how you treat someone or act in your daily life? This is a good time to start!

A Pre-Passover Tradition Searching for Chametz

Have you ever heard of bedikat chametz? It’s a ritual, kind of like a scavenger hunt, where people search for chametz the night before Passover. That’s because on Passover, we don’t eat anything made of “chametz.” Matzah isn’t chametz — it’s baked before the flour can rise. On Passover, many families avoid wheat, rye, barley, oats and spelt because it could become chametz. Some families search for these crumbs by candlelight and sweep them up with a feather, then burn them the next morning.

Seder Plate Central!

What’s on your seder plate? The seder plate is at the center of lots of people’s tables this time of year. Color your own. This seder plate coloring page is from JFamily and the Janice Charach Gallery’s Passover: It’s in the Bag. Ask your grownup about grabbing you a bag Wednesday, April 6, through Wednesday, April 20. It’s got everything you need to make a seder plate you can use at your holiday table! Preschoolers at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield take part in a tashlich ritual at the temple’s pond.
