Doop & The Inside Outlaws

By Darian Counts

it’s now a dead zone filled with hollow carcasses many say used to be factories. The death and subsequent decay of this area seems to be inspiration for Doop’s songwriting.

I met Doop via a mutual friend, Ty Stone. Ty claimed that Doop was an incredible songwriter and one of Detroit’s unsung storytellers of the music community. After sitting down to talk with Doop it became clear that Ty was dead on. Don “Doop” Duprie hails from the downriver area. More specifically River Rouge. An area that was once teaming with factories providing the promise prosperity to the masses of appellation immigrants that came here to work in the mills and factories. But

Doop started his career primarily as a songwriter. Working with fellow downriver musicians like Ty Stone, he‘d written album after album of Detroit anthems. “ We just love to create great songs , whether it’s country, metal or something in between, writing has always been something I’ve been compelled to do. Ty and I would get together and just bang out song after song. We formed a collection of writers of all sorts to focus on creating great songs. Eventually we gave a name to our songwriting group “The Inside Outlaws”. When it became time to name my back up band, “The Inside Outlaws” just seemed like the natural name”. Doop, Pete Ballard on Pedal Steel/Guitar, Jim Diamond on Guitar, Katie Grace on Bass, and Dave Shettler on Drums unite to form The Inside Outlaws. Doop is a storyteller. In the vein of Bruce Springsteen or Bob Segar, his lyrics reflect with the frustration that many of us who grew up in southeastern

Michigan feel when we drive by the closed Mclouth Steel factory or the location that used to house the Fisher body plant. There is an undeniable realness in Doop’s music. It’s a shared frustration of unfulfilled potential of the Detroit area and a changing society that sometimes seems rudderless and confused. Doop is every man. He’s an ex fire fighter whose layoff has left him no option but to look to songwriting and performing to support his family. His songs reflect what we all feel. His 2009 release Everett Belcher is homage to his grandfather, who like many of our forefathers, came to Michigan along the hillbilly highway to build a better life for his family. Songs like “Burn This City“ seem to reflect the gritty perseverance that built this area while Doop’s version of Bruce Springsteen’s “Prove It All Night” highlights his ability to personalize and retell a tale that is familiar to us all.

he is an incredibly talented storyteller. There is a familiarity to his music that speaks to not only who we are but who we were expected to be. The optimism of the baby boomers with their message of peace, love and understanding now falls on deaf ears. Their inexperienced idealism and kumbaya attitudes have in a generation not only destroyed the cash cow but left us the carcass to bury and no shovel to do it with. A lost generation disconnected from the promise of its fore bearers calls out for guidance and hope. Among this generation are doctors, lawyers, engineers and last but definitely not least songwriters and storytellers.

Cont on pg. 14

Doop’s music seems to speak of smoldering frustration many feel when we think of how hard our parents and grandparents worked to create this now spoiled land of plenty. He tells a story we all know. It’s our story. Granted it’s been told many ways. Yet, still it needs to be told again and again until we, or sons of the sons of our sons find a way out of the current economic dead end street. Doop’s appeal is in the purity of his songwriting. There’s no doubt that

KERRY KING DAVE ELLEFSON The wait is almost over…after having to postpone the American Carnage tour (due to Slayer’s Tom Araya’s urgent back surgery); the metal trifecta of Megadeth, Slayer, and Testament will finally lay waste to the US and Canada starting July 23rd. With a rejuvenated Tom Araya heading up the Slayer set and the long awaited return of Dave Ellefson (reunited once again with Dave Mustaine) back into Megadeth, this tour promises to be one for the ages given the history these bands have and the years of solid metal that they have given to the fans over so many years.

There are so many story lines with all three of these bands that make this tour a must see for everyone. From the early years of Slayer and Megadeth (Kerry King played in Megadeth during the first shows of Megadeth’s inception), to the disbanding of Megadeth 8 years ago, to the cancer scare for Chuck Billy of Testament to name a few. Regardless of issues and storylines, what makes this tour a must see is the no nonsense, bone crushing thrash metal that will be unleashed to the masses. Recently Detroit Live had a chance to speak with Kerry King of Slayer and Dave Ellefson of Megadeth to discuss what’s on their minds and discuss the American Carnage tour which will be rolling through Detroit on August 19th at Joe Louis Arena: KERRY KING DLM: Well I just want to start by saying I’m really digging the new album a lot all of the songs flow really well together. When you began writing the music for the

new album, did you have an overall theme in mind or did you write each song separate from any kind of overall theme or message? KK: Well I think we always sort of write things as we go along; I think that makes the record cooler when we’re not trying to convey one main thing, because I think it’s really hard to do that over a 40 minute span. We usually get a bunch of individual ideas that fit together and are similar enough to be in the same collection.

DLM: Now that it’s been almost 30 years since Slayer was formed, how is it different now writing a new album compared to the early days? KK: I think each album is different based on the circumstances, the time frame that’s involved, like this one - we had to make up a lot of it in the studio, which we never had to do before, so it was very different for us. But I think it produced a different collection of ideas because we wrote differently than we ever had before. There wasn’t any rhyme or reason for it; that was just the sequence of events that led to these songs being written. DLM: I was really blown away by some of the lead work on this album, especially on songs like SNUFF; how do you usually create solos - do you just start playing until you find something that works, or do you plan it out ahead of time? KK: Actually those damn things are usually a fuckin’ afterthought, because I usually get caught up in making an interesting lead, so the solos just end up being overlooked a lot of the time. They’re definitely less important to us than the lead work most of the time. For example with SNUFF I came up with a real cool section for the lead, and then I just decided to double it, and that was more important than the solo work. I’d say about 75-80% of the stuff I just make up on the spot, and then if I don’t like it I’ll just go back and try something new. DLM: Are there any bands that are playing right now that influence your music in any way, or bands that you listen to a lot lately? KK: Not really...not to sound arrogant, but I would say a lot of bands are influenced by us. I mean, I get inspired by people that play their instrument well, like the Children of Bodom guitar and keyboard - those guys are just maestros at what they do. I’m definitely a fan of a lot of bands, but I just wouldn’t use the word influence. DLM: You guys are going on a European tour soon - do you see any major differences in European fans or venues as opposed to American shows? KK: I don’t think there are big differences,

by Steve Wallag and Matt McDaniels

but when you get to the festival level there’s huge climax for everyone! a visual difference. I actually can’t wait to go back on tour. DLM: How is it playing the new songs from the time you left Megadeth? DLM: How do you feel about the metal DE: Man, the latest album End Game is scene right now compared to when you a fantastic record!!! It’s certainly Dave were first starting out? Mustaine at his best, writing bone crushing KK: I think it’s real similar actually. I riffs. It’s what he does best! don’t think there’s much originality, but I don’t think there needs to be. I think fans DLM: How is the chemistry now with the just want to hear something cool, and hear new lineup? somebody different doing it. DE: Even though I have played a lot of other stuff in recent years, to come back DLM: All right, thanks a lot man, and I and just play bone crushing thrash metal can’t wait to see you guys live when you again just came back so naturally with me come to Detroit next. to play that with Dave. Reality is that Dave KK: Definitely man, thanks a lot. is the best guy at it. To just come back and sink right back in the pocket with him was DAVE ELLEFSON musically just a treat for me. Shaun Drover DLM: Are you guys excited about playing has a great feel to how he plays. Chris with Slayer and Testament on this tour? Broderick does such a great job emulating Dave Ellefson: Oh for sure! We have a to the details and nuances to the former long history with Slayer…Kerry King was members that it all really is true Megadeth. the guitarist in Megadeth during the first Megadeth shows in 1984. Megadeth and Slayer played in the New York area in 85 DLM: Any past memories from Detroit? and Megadeth and Slayer played Clash DE: Oh yeah! From the early days of of the Titans in 90 and 91. This is a good playing the Token Lounge, Blondies, and year for all of us in our genre to be touring Royal Oak Music Hall. More recently we together. flew up from Buenos Aires straight to the Palace to play a Christmas Show for WRIF, DLM: What is it like being back in and Dee Snyder was host for that night. Megadeth after so many years? It was good to see Dee and hook up with DE: Honestly is feels like I never left. We fit him. It was an awesome way to celebrate back together so good and right now we’re Christmas. just enjoying the ride. DLM: How was it patching things back up with Dave Mustaine? DE: You know, Dave and I have talked and met up several times over the past 8 years. That process over time helps soften everything up. A lot of the past issues were already starting to be put back behind us when we got back together. Dave and I fit together like a glove again, it’s like we never missed a beat.

DLM: Have you had a chance to keep in touch with the old band members? DE: I have, probably more than everyone, stayed in touch with the guys. It’s so good to know that we can move on and do things

cont on 11

DLM: What’s the difference between Megadeth now and Megadeth then? DE: We have the same inspired enthusiasm that we had all those years ago. The difference now is that we are more mature and wiser men…lol…we approach everything with a lot more experience under our belts. If certain things happen, we don’t get flustered because we have seen it before. You know fans are very excited to see Dave and I playing again. The fans have wanted to see us playing these songs (old and new) for so long. To a large degree playing these songs settles the score from what happened in Megadeth’s past. The American Carnage tour this summer will build all this up to a

“You’ve got to walk before you can run,” “Rome wasn’t built in a day,” “Patience is a virtue”—all phrases that pertain to biding one’s time and having the wisdom to, in the case of Joint Chiefs of Detroit, build something from the ground up. And that’s exactly the career path that Eric Freeman (drums/vocals), Ron McPherson (guitars/ vocals), J.T. Lee (keyboards/guitars/vocals) and Raquel Salaysay (bass/vocals) have laid out for themselves. These four prodigious musicians aren’t exactly unknowns. They are actually all well seasoned vets, with Freeman, McPherson and Lee alums of the Detroit original scene and power pop stalwarts the Sunday Painters and Salaysay heralding a resume that boasts stints with the Truncheons, Slumber Party, Waka Jawaka and Park the Karma. But this is the first time that all four have actively pursued a cover band venture and the learning curve has proven to be a fun and exciting education. “Eric and I have been playing together since we were kids and we had been kicking the cover band thing around for quite a while,” explains McPherson. “We needed a second job and thought we’re pretty good at this so let’s do this. But let’s pick songs that aren’t that obvious but that people still will know. We’ll do our own arrangements of songs and just have fun with it. We brought J.T. in because we’ve known him a long time and had been playing with him a while too.” The trio needed a bass player and composed an ad on Craigslist which was immediately answered by Salaysay. “This was December of ’08 and I was laid off at the time and talked to my husband Kerry about getting into a cover band for money,” says Salaysay. “I emailed my bio to them and they responded the next day to set up an audition. I played the songs they asked me to learn and Ron immediately asked if I wanted to join the band. I said ‘don’t you want to talk this over in another room first?” “Well, it was just one of those things where we started rehearsing and halfway through the second run-through on

a song Raquel asked Eric what he was playing on his kick drum,” explains McPherson. “I looked at J.T. behind Raquel’s back and said ‘she’s in!’ Bass player….kick drum…. meshing….good…ha..ha! The James Jamerson rule!” All prolific songwriters, the Joint Chiefs of Detroit have tried to apply that musical aesthetic to choosing and performing cover songs. “It’s as simple as one of us driving down the road and someone thinks of a tune and starts texting everyone else about it—but not when we’re driving, of course,” explains McPherson. “I wasn’t really sold on being in a cover band, at first,” adds Lee. “But we are able to have our own level of originality in the songs and put our own flair into it. As long as the song is recognizable that’s what matters. We like to say we’re an ‘original cover band.’ Ron can dupe a solo as good as anybody but I’m not that good at copying other people’s stuff. I’d rather do my own. But then we’ll ad lib some stuff on a gig and the crowd really gets into it. That’s a lot of fun!” Recent sets have included an eclectic mix of everything from Black Sabbath and Styx to the Police, Squeeze and the Rolling Stones. They’ve also been combing the local landscape gracing venues such as Dearborn’s Post Bar, Silky’s, The New Place Lounge and Cheli’s, Busters in Trenton, Burrough’s Tavern in Brighton, Pier 500 in Wyandotte, Moose MacGregor’s in Brownstown and Mezza in Novi. “This is a completely different scene that you’ve got to get at,” explains McPherson. “The more it’s different, the more it is the same. It’s just different people involved in different clubs. It’s a lot of networking and we’re still learning that end of things. But we’re patient people and we have a plan. We’re starting to get calls now where people will say we want you, we’ve heard. People come to see us and we’re not your typical cover band. We’re doing this from scratch. It’s almost like a social dynamics experiment where we’re good at what we do and trying to find a method to the madness.” For more information you can check out Joint Chiefs of Detroit on MySpace and Facebook.

ADVENTURES OF A COVER BAND PART 5: REMEDY, THE INCEPTION By Karin Elizabeth

The dreamer can always remember the genesis of the idea. True inspiration is impossible to fake. –Leonardo DiCaprio, the Inception 2010 Wikipedia describes the definition of the word, “Inception” as the following: The creation or beginning of something; the establishment of the origin of an event that is a beginning; a first part or stage of subsequent events. Some of you may have even seen the new Leonardo DiCaprio movie, “Inception” in which Leo’s character works as sort of a “dream spy”, implanting ideas in the minds of high-profile individuals while dreaming, in order to make it seem like the idea came from them, with deadly consequences. I guarantee, dream spy implanted or not, everyone has an idea floating around in their head that may seem crazy, but that they just can’t let go of. This may be a childhood fantasy, such as modeling, acting or being famous that the adult still dreams of, however inappropriate or far-fetched. For me, having a band is that dream, and I’d like to tell you how it all started.

this as an excuse to party?” Any musician with any sort of work ethic at all will tell you it is definitely the former and not the latter. As a teenager I continued to dream. Hungry for any sort of musical experience I could get, I joined every band, choir and orchestra available to me. Thankfully, I was blessed with parents who could afford all of this and I was able to travel the world, and even make music with people from other cultures. Nothing fired me up more than to be creating music, either by myself or with others. Even if it was the “re-creation” of another’s work (as is always the case in classical music), there was still room for interpretation.

In college I still played in all the orchestras and I began to take myself and my acoustic guitar around and nourish my real dream: being on stage as the main act, and entertaining others with contemporary music. This could be interpreted as something inappropriate as I studied for my “real” career, teaching. I began to squash my hunger and focus on what society would consider noble and acceptable. I began to teach more than I played, telling myself I would eventually find fulfillment. With the advent of adulthood, and the responsibilities to follow, my true dream became more and more distant. As I advanced further into my career, the dream still called out to me. I think there are many others out there still able to hear their true dream, but who are simply unable to answer it due to career and family responsibilities. From a very early age, I began playing I believe that if people were somehow the classical violin. Featuring such diabolical acts as Mcnastee, Claas, and Sicktanick, as well as the all-female group Dead Girlz, this is sure to be a show to give you nightmares. With 30+ acts, there

won’t be any thing left to the imagination, spectators will walk away permanently scarred from this two day event. The best (if you can call it that) part of this festival is that it will be 2 days long, so if you’re into horrorcore, there’s no reason to not be there, you may be haunted if you don’t. Make sure you check out the 2nd Annual Strictly for “The Wicked Festival” @ The Modern Exchange in Southgate on September 3rd and 4th. For more info and tickets go to www.themusickstore.com

So the story is obviously very music-based but also left quite a big impact on the culture as well.” Production for Louder Than Love: The Grande Ballroom Story is almost complete and plans for a Detroit debut are right around the corner. “My hope is that the country and the world will recognize how important the Grande was to rock history,” concludes D’Annunzio. “I really believe it is one of the greatest untold stories in music.” For more information on the film or to contact Tony D’Annunzio you can go to the following sources: louder2010@gmail.com , www. indiegogo.com and search “Louder Than Love,” check out Louder Than Love: The Grande Ballroom Story on Facebook or search Vimeo for the official trailer.

On July 3rd, DJ and producer Deadmau5 (pronounced ‘dead mouse’) played a literal sweat-dripping, intense show at The Filmore. The place was jam packed with crazy Detroit-ers along with people who came from as far as Kalamazoo and Bay City to see their favorite artist perform. Not only was his performance outstanding, but his light show was phenomenal. The crowd especially went crazy when he mixed Claude Vonstrokes “Who’s Afraid of Detroit” into his set. Urban agriculture has become the new craze in Detroit, but the true farming is being done in basements all across the area. Since the Michigan Medical Marihuana Act was established, licensed patients and caregivers were given the opportunity to grow their medicine. As with any successful and garden, marijuana takes a Dr Greenthumb to do it right. Once the fall breeze begins to hit, it’s time to hit the books. The best way to learn the art if gardening is to take the time to learn from the experts. In only 8 weeks, you learn how to tell the difference between male and female, how to clone, and the basics of setting up a grow room. Advanced techniques are also taught, including crossbreeding, getting rid of insects (especially spider mites) and how to make sure your crop is getting the proper nutrients. As the

medical marijuana industry continues to grow the some growers will rise to the top as far as quality of product. We at DL mag want to make sure you are one of them. Many people are still naïve to the laws that have made this all happen. There are centers where you can learn the laws, get legal advice, become a patient, and make sure that you are a fully informed. The best way to get knowledge is to know where to find it. SISTA OTIS with like minded artists and she was a good fit for the style that they played. Fast forward a few years and I found Sista Otis via social media. We became friends on MySpace and Facebook, I had posted a couple of her videos and we started to converse. I found her to be a genuine person with a genuine love for people from all walks of life. She lived in post Katrina New Orleans for a time and played street music for the people recovering from the devastation there. She has traveled all over the country in her car making friends and playing her music without a “real” home of her own. Her living being made from the sales of her independent CD, “Worldwide Release,” which Living The Dream Out of The Back of Her obtained more Detroit Music Award Car nominations in its history to that point. Six years ago Detroit native Sista Otis was ready to hit the open highway in her 1994 Geo Metro. She was living the dream out of the back of her car… Her bags packed, and leaving the next morning, until a last minute call led her to the New Dodge in Hamtramck. It was then that I met Sista Otis and became a fan. My husband Richard and his band mates from A Hundred Miles (formerly the Michael Blair Project) were performing there that night for the first time. From the moment she came into the bar she exuded personality, and when she got on stage with her much loved guitar, we were mesmerized. She had this jazzy, rock, bluesy, and urban sounding vocal all rolled into one. Even without a band to back her up, she plunked out some very sweet rhythms on her guitar. But putting those talents aside, the most captivating thing about Sista Otis may be her stage presence. She knows how to work an audience; she has that rare gift of personality and charm that set her apart from the others. This may be a gift passed down from both of her grandmothers who toured, danced, and sang professionally, or from her father who practiced with his band in her family’s garage. But gifted she is, and disappointed we were that she was leaving town. Musicians like to perform

Matt Forde played drums for Trinity Broadcast Network in Nashville and listed Phil Rudd and Billy Cobham as his. By Michelle Hounshell Earlier I mentioned Elvis and Johnny Cash as influential in Otis’ musical career, but she had big love for Big Mama Thornton, May 14, Sista Otis invited Janis Joplin, the Doors, and was also several of her favorite local musicians greatly influenced by the Sun Players to perform with her in what she called and the Memphis sound in general, as The Sista Otis Medicine Show, at Rosie well as Bob Dylan whom she finds quite O’Grady’s in Ferndale. There were two stages, one indoor and one outdoor, it was attractive. a great night! She gave the performers Sista Otis and the Wholly Rollers the star treatment, with professional opened up for Blues Traveler back in June photography, a great sound system, live in Myrtle Beach, one of the highs of her radio broadcast by Mad World Radio, and career. John Popper gave her a shout out she introduced each band herself, in her after her performance three times and classic and complimentary style. gave her a kiss on the cheek, and then proceeded to tell her he loved her songs! More recently, on Wednesday

July 28, the Sista Otis and the Gospel of Rock N’ Roll show happened at Rosie O’Grady’s in Ferndale. The line-up consisted of Sista Otis and her top notch musicians the Wholly Rollers. Sista Otis hails from our own Detroit, MI., while lead guitarist Tami or T- Flash Gordon comes from Fort Colbourne, Ontario. Bass player Lee Magnificent Fisher comes from Birmingham, Alabama, She has had much media (his band mates say he put the “Bam” attention in the last few months due in Alabama) and Drummer Matt Forde to American Idol runner up Crystal Bowersox, who mentioned Sista Otis and comes from Mississippi. Also in the Janis Joplin as being some of her biggest line-up for the evening were, A Hundred Miles lead guitarist Richard Hounshell musical influences. Suddenly people from Flat Rock and Tom Hagaman of were wondering who Otis was, and it Southgate who performed an acoustic paid off for her in surprising ways. She set for the usually five piece band. And became friends with Crystal Bowersox ending the evening was Jeffree St. John and they had numerous conversations of the band Sugar Spell from Plymouth, during her American Idol experience, MI., who also performed an acoustic which led up to Sista Otis becoming Bowersox’s special guest in the audience set, and was one of the original Wholly Rollers. one night, and in which she sat next to Bowersox’s then boyfriend and held up a After the show I was sign that read “Mama Sox and Sista Otis say Save New Orleans.” In the aftermath able to spend time and talk with Sista Otis and her band of the oil spill offshore, she was able to mates. I must say, they are bring attention to her beloved people of all every bit as likeable as New Orleans. The band will begin touring in September starting in the South and will release their second single “Pink Caraousel” and have download cards available.
