Justine Blazer

DLM: What makes the Justine Blazer sound distinctive in comparison to other similar music that’s out right now?

It would be a serious understatement to say that a lot has happened with the career of Justine Blazer and her band since she graced the cover of Detroit Live in July 2009. Our own Karin Elizabeth captured the essence of Ms. Blazer and her background up to that point very well. And with Blazer winning the Ram Trucks Battle of the Bands National Contest in Austin, Texas this past March we felt it was definitely time for an update. The Motor City country chanteuse’s latest single is called “New Country Beat” and is steadily garnering radio play as we speak. The video for the song was directed by Ryan Archibald and, on the strength of that, won Blazer and company a slot as national endorsers for Ram Trucks. She also recently sang the national anthem for the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park and was nominated for five Detroit Music Awards. Justine Blazer and her band mates Kerry Adams (lead guitar/vocals); Caine D’Onofrio (keyboards); Mark Sutton (drums/ vocals) and Rick Jacoby (bass/vocals) will be appearing at the Downtown Hoedown in Detroit this summer sponsored by Ram Trucks. This looks like just the start of big things to come! DLM: Can you tell me about the Ram Trucks contest and other recent career developments? JB: It’s a great thing and we are blessed to have the opportunity. I heard about it on the internet and uploaded our video “New Country Beat” that we did in late summer/early fall. And the fans voted us into the Top 10. Out of the Top 10, Ram Trucks chose the top two finalists. And they flew us all out to Texas, paid for the hotel and gave us a per diem. We did some promotional stuff and some B-roll video. Then we performed around noon at Rodeo Austin on a Sunday. We did “New Country Beat” and they selected us as the winner. It was awesome and we won $5,000

dollars and we’re gonna be part of their team. They are big supporters of country music. They sponsored the ACM Awards and are part of a lot of events in country music so it’s really good to be a part of it. Our goal is to get on as many things as we can and see what happens. So far they’ve been extremely supportive of the things that we’ve presented and hope that it can just continue.

JB: Well, I’m not afraid to try something new or innovative. “New Country Beat” is a sound that they just weren’t playing on the radio and we got some radio play with that—still are, in fact! And it won us the award with Ram Trucks. All of the guys in my band come from different backgrounds. And they bring their own sound and created their own realm. And I wanted to do it that way. A lot of artists in Nashville hire studio guys to record and after a while it sounds generic. I could’ve recorded in Nashville. I have access to those sources. But I wanted to be innovative as an artist and create my own path. We’ve had a lot of success in a short period of time. I think it’s because we take risks and keep it “Detroit-contained,” you might say. We bring our rock ‘n roll and blues background to the table and create something fresh, edgy and new. I think that’s why we have such a wide age range demographic that listens to our material. It’s very similar to Kid Rock in that every song has its own sound. Some songs are edgy, some songs are rock, some are soulful, some are bluesy—but they all fall under that country umbrella. What’s country music anymore? I like songs from the heart and songs people can relate to. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.

By Eric Harabadian

DLM: What’s your take on the traditional vs. modern country debate? JB: It’s just music! If for marketing purposes they wanna put a country sticker on it, then great! We just try to play music and the people like it. It’s starting to get some real attention. I’ve never thought I’ve gotta write this kind of song so I can get this kind of fan and get this kind of reaction from it. Does that make sense? And I would emphasize to any artist that wants to make music to not follow a mold and make the music you want to make. And then let the people decide where it fits. DLM: What is the key to keeping a band together and making it work? JB: That’s a hard question to answer. I’ve worked with many musicians and so has my band. For some reason something special and magical happens when the five of us get together to make music. It’s an intangible thing and all I can say is we all have the best interest in mind, and that’s making music. DLM: How important is it to be a multi-tasker today as an artist? JB: I wear about 20 different hats. It’s really hard

DLM: How often do you play a week? JB: Every weekend, about three shows a week for, going on, five years as a full-time musician. We play about 200 shows a year. We try to stay in the tri-state area of Michigan, Ohio and Indiana. DLM: Your fourth and most current CD release is called Welcome to My World. Can you tell me about it? JB: It’s the first album where I entirely wrote it based on different experiences in my life. It’s something that I wanted to challenge myself with. The previous albums were different because I was younger and still trying to figure out who I was and what I was trying to say—my message and everything. I think that comes across most clearly with my latest one. I have half of my next album already written and we’ll continue to grow. It’s an on-going process and look forward to many more. DLM: Has your environment and being from the Detroit area influenced your sound? JB: I grew up listening to Bob Seger and those kinds of artists along with a lot of Motown. I also grew up listening to a lot of country like Reba, Terri Clark and Martina. I lived in Nashville when I was a kid. That kept me close to the country influence, I guess.

to get noticed in this business and you have to do everything all at once to get the attention of the right people. And once you get their attention it doesn’t really change because you’ve gotta keep doing that and prove yourself. Just because you meet an incredible manager or booking agent or record exec—we know all these people and can call them any time of the day by networking and being out there. But you have to continue doing that because they’re not going to invest any additional time, money, effort or promotion until they know that you’re a serious artist. There is really market saturation and only about 1.1% makes a living at this or is serious about it. We’re at a level where we sacrifice our life, our jobs, our entire well-being to play music, and we take it very seriously. You have to basically sell your soul for the chance that maybe it’ll work out. But at the end of the day we’re gonna come out there and play with just as much emotion—whether it’s for 30 or 3,000 people! DLM: Country music seems as popular now as ever. Why do you think that is? JB: Unfortunately rock and pop artists—and I’m not quite sure when it all started—relied so much on the image and the look. But they sacrificed the talent. Very popular artists, who will remain nameless, rely on auto-pitch and big dance productions and there’s no music in the tracks. It’s all computers, drum machines and lip synching. The public has just had enough of that! Country still has an authenticity to it. We have artists that still do write their own songs,

sing live and are good musicians that play their own instruments. In country you can have a long career like Reba McIntyre. And that’s why I’m in country, because 20 years from now, I can still have a career in this music. I’ve got the talent, musicianship and wherewithal to have a long career in this industry and so does my band. And the fans aren’t stupid! Country music fans are some of the most sophisticated, well-rounded people I’ve seen. They can spot what’s real. And that’s why I’m in this industry, because the fans have been so loyal and supportive. It encourages us to keep going. DLM: That makes a lot of sense. Is there anything else you want to add about events or things coming up? JB: I just wanna thank everyone who’s ever supported this project. It means so much. This industry is driven by fans. And at the end of the day, big labels can think what they want, but I’m still not signed. I’m striving to get a label deal. But I’m doing something I love. And the fans continue to come out and tell their friends and buy the merchandise and the music. It’s driven by the fans. I don’t have to prove anything. The fans will do it for me. Happy 40th to... Photos And Story By Mg Naderr

Over 40 years ago WXYZ-FM Radio separated programming and aired its first ever rock based format with a Top 40 approach and called it “Boss 101.” This is when Arthur Penhallow, a local jock, was hired for this format. On February 14, 1971, 40 years ago the station changed its call letters to WRIF. When radio was ready to step into the next generation WRIF took the lead in revolutionizing how and what we hear. WRIF personalities have embedded words like “BABY”, “BI-ATCH” and “KICK ASS” into our brians. For 4 decades WRIF has streamed Rock n Roll through our car speakers, our home radios and our hearts.

Dean DeLeo - STP

On 4-20-11 WRIF Celebrated 40 years of Rock at the Fillmore Detroit. The show quickly sold out and the WRIF fans were not disappointed. It was an electrifying event with special guests Taddy Porter, Toby Redd featuring the original drummer Chad Smith and ending the night with a big bang, Stone Temple Pilots lit up the house in typical Rock-N-Roll fashion! WRIF The home of Rock-N-Roll “BABY”!!!!!!! Happy Birthday from all of us here at DLM. We look forward to rockn’ out with WRIF for decades to come!

seriously doubt I have all this star quality and talent that people are talking about, this “X Factor.” This nervousness is crazy considering how many people I perform in front of on a weekly basis, showcasing the most intimate instrument of all; the human voice. I think it is my voice that makes me vulnerable, because the instrument is you. If people don’t like your voice, then they Photo Courtesy Angela Todd simply don’t like you. Your vocals are a direct reflection of your personality and spirit. I am afraid of exposing all of that I have totally lost my mind, people. In with no cover up, with the possibility of less than a week I am going to be going being rejected at the forefront. All of my down to Chicago to audition for the “X mistakes, all of who I am will be laid bare Factor,” which is the British version of in front of a crowd. Normally I would just American Idol featuring my favorite go and rock it, but because of all of that infamous host, Simon Cowell. Don’t ask me exposure I am utterly terrified! how I got talked into this. It started first with my parents, then my family, then friends, Of course I am being totally sarcastic then fans. Being naturally competitive, I am when I say “favorite” in reference to Simon not the kind of person to back down from a Cowell. The first time I saw him was challenge; however I think I may have bitten when I was about twenty years old and off a little more than I can chew here. This in my sophomore year of music school. particular audition involves singing a really My parents made me watch an episode of difficult song in front of about three thousand American Idol during a visit one day. I people (including my buddy Simon and the remember distinctly there was a set of triplet show’s producers) on a stage A Capella; that girls who were about seventeen years old is, no instruments, just me and a microphone. who were auditioning. They were beautiful, Naturally, I am petrified… had great voices and harmonized as if they I don’t normally get nervous, but the thought of not having an instrument (or better yet, an entire band) to hide behind puts me in a distinct state of unease. You would never know it from my stage personality, but I am extremely modest and I never give myself credit or praise. I don’t really think I am that great. Okay so I went to music school but that’s just a piece of paper. The crowd seems to dig what I do or else I wouldn’t be making my living doing it, but that doesn’t mean I am the next big thing. Sure I have fun with what I do, but I really Simon Cowell

were born singing (which they probably were.) The first thing Simon did was break them up and keep one on in the show. Then he proceeded to tear the one sister apart and tell her she was too “big.” She was about a size eight. So this poor girl is probably going to have an eating disorder for the rest of her life because of this guy. At that point I had it with Simon Cowell, and turned it off. Well that, and I couldn’t stand listening to the out of tune singers.

When I would hear about someone making it “big,” I would get a little twinge in my heart. It’s not like I’m going to be the next Britney Spears (definitely not!),

By Karin Elizabeth

or even Joss Stone or Gretchen Wilson. I am not like my good friend Justine Blazer, who is ambitious and determined to succeed in the original music business, and has the skills and mindset to get there. At this point I have way too many adult responsibilities weighing me down to be able to focus on something like that, even though I secretly wish I had focused on it a little more when the opportunity was there. Oh well, I made my bed and I get to lie in it now. That’s part of where having this cover band thing going on makes it interesting, fulfilling a little bit of that fantasy, getting rid of some of that regret. But as far as reality goes, American Idol makes it clear that there is an age limit. And I am simply past my prime as a rock star, which at the end of the day is just fine by me. I gave up that little twinge three years ago, when I turned twenty-seven, the official age limit of American Idol. So there! I confessed my little dark secret. I guess it’s really not that bad, and it’s not that far off considering that I make Six Months Gone Token Lounge—4-2-11 Club Review By Eric Harabadian

Six Months Gone is a hard rocking quartet with a bluesy and soulful sensibility that’s been on the Detroit scene since 2009. Andrew May ( guitar/vocals); Richard Whitehead II ( guitars); Arlie Vest Jr. ( bass) and Paul Breen ( drums) brought their “A” game to a local rock and roll club. The sizeable crowd seemed to agree as there was palpable applause and fervor in the air during their energetic set. Their all original program kicked things off with a classic sounding tune called “Stand.” It was a hard-edged mid-tempo number with a tough Molly Hatchet kind of vibe. Lead vocalist May grabbed everyone’s attention from the get go with his gruff and aggressive approach. “RPG” followed and leveled the crowd with some funky wahwah guitar and tight syncopated drums. Again, May’s soulful voice was in command and was complemented nicely by Whitehead’s solo guitar breaks. The band dedicated the song “I Miss” to the ladies in the audience and boosted the ayjaypics@gmail.com

Ever since then I swore off American Idol. I ripped on it. I avoided it. I was a pop music-shunning, jazz and blues-loving snob. However, I do understand that a ton of people watch and love it, including my mother in-law. I also recognize that it has produced some pretty awesome artists, like Kelly Clarkson, Chris Daughtry and Carrie Underwood. I had declared an official non-interest in that show, and reality shows for the most part. But I harbored a dark secret…

Adventures of a Cover Band Part 9: Do I have the “X Factor?” my living being an entertainer. It’s kind of embarrassing and childish, to want to “grow up and be a famous singer,” however what makes it less so is all of the people encouraging me to do this now that there is another chance for me. The X-factor has no age limit; in fact this is one of the defining aspects of the show, plus a five-million dollar recording contract with Sony. Yay! So next week I will make my way down to Chicago, crash at my sister’s apartment and get up at the crack of dawn and go stand in line for eight hours with thousands of other nut jobs like me for a chance at auditioning which we may not even get. We will sing, sleep, cry and bond. Hopefully after all of that effort I will make it onto one of the preliminary stages, and from there for an audition in front of producers. If that doesn’t happen, oh well. No biggie, I like my life the way it is thank you very much. Besides, it was just a little twinge…

crunch. It was somewhat traditional in that it was based on a loosely structured blues pattern but, ultimately, was pure rock ‘n roll. A slower moody piece called “Epiphany” seemed to draw from Days of the New and Creed influences. Here they employed some sweet melodic breaks mixed with tasteful feedback. “If I” picked up the pace again with some muscular driving drums. There was a heavy wall of guitar rhythms, with visions of vintage Pearl Jam coming to mind. “Catastrophe” was next on the list and kind of walked the line between hardcore and heavy blues-influenced rock. May’s vocals were very prominent here atop pummeling percussion and bass. They segued into “Crystal Clear” that put the spotlight on buzz saw guitars and some wild abandoned shredding. The song concluded with Vest pulling a classic Hendrix cum Cobain move by smashing his axe to the delight of the crowd. Not an “oldies show” but a great concert. The concert also featured guitarist Paul Warren from Plymouth, Michigan who has been playing guitar for Rod Stewart for the last 10 or 15 years! Johni loves how everyone in the music biz is related whether they know it or not! The Mystery Train band used to play the All Around Bar back in the day. His nephews are also talented. REVOLUTION OF ROCK HELLS YEAH!!! It’s a new month. Winter’s gone and I’ve got some great shows in my sights... all is well in Motown. I recently received an e-mail from charger6t9r@yahoo.com asking “What was your favorite part about working in radio?” I can honestly say that working with local bands in the metro area was always my favorite part. When I was at the former “Rock 103” WIQB in Ann Arbor I did a local show called “Tiny’s Homegrown”. I played fantastic local music like Harms Way, Accidental Overdose, The Betrayed, Branded, Ghost Planet & Sugar Pill. When I moved to Toledo to work at WRWK “Rock 106” I hosted the show called “Toledo Rocks!!!” There we played bands like Hatework, Five Horse Johnson & Lollipop Lust Kill. From there I went to the almighty WRIF in Detroit where I co-hosted “Midnight Metal” with Screamin’ Scott. Scott and I were very proud to play as much local music on our show as they did on the station’s local show “Motor City Riffs”. We played Bowlscraper (now known as Soldiers of Scrape), Mindrought, Stitch, RSP, Throttlebody, Detroit Voodoo & more. When I became the music director of “The Zone” out of Traverse City I immediately put local music into regular rotation. In addition I served up 6 hours of local rock on Sunday nights with my show “Audio Anarchy”. In regular rotation I played the best local music from all over the state of Michigan including TC’s own Indulge, Act of Confession, The Darwin Project & Smyt, Detroit’s Mindcandy, Koyl, Rusty Lunchbox, Underland & Critical Bill, Flint’s Sour Jane, Grand Rapids Two Heded Chan & more. Since our signal went across the lake to Green Bay, Wisconsin I even played their locals like Carbellion, Remember The Day, 9mm Solution & Perfect Red. It was an amazing ride that helped me build relationships I still have today. The local music scenes were by far my favorite part of working in radio. Last month I was able to see the bands SBU (Strength Beyond U) and Kastura. I Haven’t seen SBU in almost 2 years.Wow! The brutality was AWESOME!!! Really nice to see these guys are still busting their ass and playing some of the finest, hardest music I have ever heard. I hadn’t seen Kastura since April ‘10 when they blew me away then immediately had some band turmoil and line-up changes that kept them out of action. What a comeback, with new drummer John Henegar in the fold, Kastura has found their energy again, this band is unreal and I can’t wait to see them again. Until next time, drop me a line at facebook.com/tinytimrocks or at tinytimrocks@yahoo.com, as always Earth, Soul, Rock ‘n’ Roll and Life Rules! Tiny

RUSTY LUNCHBOX

SBU

Memorial Day Weekend is quickly approaching. Not only does this holiday bring families & friends together for some BBQ’n and beers, but it also brings the city of Detroit together. Going on it’s 12th year and still growing, the Movement Festival, held at Hart Plaza in Downtown Detroit, brings together fans, artists & performers from all over the world. Never letting down the regulars and making an astounding impression on newcomers. This is the time of year where the families of techno music gather, where friends reunite with one another, and where the city of Detroit gets to show it’s true beauty which is a blessing not many people are aware of. This year we have a new Platinum selling artist to welcome into our city, Fatboy Slim. TOUCH BAND PARTYING WITH THE GRIZZLIES By Steve Wallag

“Music is the universal language of mankind.” H.B. Longfellow

Music can be universally created and played in all sorts of ways. Whether it’s someone hitting a bongo or listening to a full orchestra, the songs created can move and have a lasting effect on those listening. Introducing “Touch”, a musical project focused on touch style instruments that covers many music genres, but always with a desire to create a unique and interesting sound. By utilizing unique instruments, Touch hopes to create interest in music that can touch people in an intimate way. At first glance, one will certainly want to see what this project is all about. Centralizing around a Megatar and Zendrum, Joe and Dave of Touch draw people in visually, and then deliver it home melodically with an amazing sound. Joe’s “make it feel good” groove and Dave’s technically focused work create a perfect blend. Influences of jazz and rock give those listening something new and fresh that will certainly not be easily

forgotten. With their roots in the Detroit area, Detroit Live Magazine was able to sit down with Joe and Dave to get their insight on the Touch project: DLM: How did you come up with the idea of Touch? Joe/Dave: Touch started off as a project that we both came up with. Joe came up with the name “Touch” from the touch style performance. We both thought that was the perfect name and it just stuck with us. We also like to think of it in a sense that we hope to touch people with our music. It all comes from the touch style instruments we use. DLM: Describe the Megatar and Zendrum for us? Dave: The Megatar is a six string bass and six string guitar on one neck that is played with both hands. There is no strumming or picking of the instrument, it’s all touch style. You play the guitar and bass simultaneously and you weave melodies and chords together to make some melodic music. Joe: The Zendrum is a MIDI controller device

16 www.detroitlivemagazine.com

that sends messages to a sound module. It is made out of wood and worn somewhat like a guitar that has 24 sensor pads on it. The sensor pads are very touch sensitive. It takes very little pressure for the sensors to trigger, but you get very accurate response to your playing style.

DLM: What other instruments do you guys use? Joe/Dave: In addition to a standard jazz drum kit, we use the Cajon which is a box drum, a wood bongo, and a Zen Tambour hang drum which is a type of steel drum. DLM: What inspired you to create Touch? Dave: For me it was the need to step out of the guitarist mold. I would get into these guitarist’s ruts, and in one of the processes of breaking out of this rut, I discovered the Megatar. It was a way to reinvent myself as an instrumentalist and as an artist and still use my background as a guitarist. I thought that was something very unique for me. Joe: This project offered an opportunity for me to get back to playing drums where I had actually started Joe and Dave of Touch out on back in high school. My approach with Touch was not just to play drums but to try and find unique instruments that stand apart. For me being a rhythm player, it feels good to get back to playing drums and being creative with those other instruments. DLM: Has your past playing experience helped your style of playing in Touch? Dave: My past heavy metal/hard rock days have definitely helped because it’s a very involved, technical, and physical type of playing. There is a lot of movement and things that can happen in that type of style. The speed licks and chops from the past have paved the way for the melodies and melodic sound of Touch. While the styles are different, the actual act of playing has helped me. Joe: I have always felt like I am the glue that holds bands together, kind of like a utility player. I don’t tend to stand out front and solo, but I tend to hold the groove down because I am a rhythmic person. In this sense my past experience allows me to understand what it takes to make everything come together. DLM: Growing up, what influenced you the most musically? Dave: For me, the songs that stood out to me were from Tom Schultz (Boston) and Led Zeppelin. I knew I liked that sound and I could cont on pg 27

Written by Amanda Norkunas On April 14th something new and exciting took place at Meadow Brook Music Festival. Oakland University hosted their annual spring concert this year featuring Girl Talk, LMFAO, and G-Eazy. During our brief chat with communications major Kate Rozek, she told us a few things about how she made the concert happen. “I was hired into the Student Board in December and my biggest task was to put on the spring concert. Oakland University isn’t really known to be a party school, so I wanted to bring something new and exciting to the school and I thought what better party atmosphere than LMFAO and Girl Talk?!” She was very happy with the turn out and pleased to have shown her fellow college students an atmosphere the campus has never seen before. She exclaimed “Everyone loved the opener to the very end!” I believe she’s right! G-Eazy really showed off his “fresh style” opening the show. The 21 yr old Cali-born rapper, producer, performer, graphic designer and video editor collaborated well with the other musicians performing that night. “My music is a reflection of who I am at this point in life. I’m aggressively pursuing my passion for music, part hermit who’s obsessed with it, and part every 21 yr old who likes to hang out with girls and party.” stated G-Eazy. When asked about his opinion of Detroit, this being his 2nd time here, he proclaimed “Detroit is one of the iconic cities in the US, and it stands alone. I love fall and the cold, so coming out here it’s like being in a movie. When I was here in October, we were walking through the hood looking for a laundromat and happened to meet 2 girls that showed us around, one of them happened to be Kate Rozek, the girl who booked us for this show. You never know the relationships you form and see grow while you’re touring.” Make sure you pick up G-Eazy’s new album Endless Summer this summer. For more info www.g-eazy. com As the crowd started to thicken, LMFAO was welcomed by the students of Oakland University as they are always a crowd pleaser! Thanks to their “party rock” style, their fans were screaming and jumping with excitement the entire set. With their family in attendance, Redfoo & Skyblu (son and nephew of Motown founder Berry Gordy) got the crowed pumped with their Detroit version of “I’m in Miami,” and the buzz inducing “Shots”! The energy they demonstrated on stage was quickly translated to the crowd, and needless to say,

On stage with Girl Talk LMFAO really know how to get people out of their seats! LMFAO’s new album Sorry for Party Rocking will be out in June. Check out www.lmfaonews.com If you’re into a sweaty, intense, serious whirling mass of energy then watching mashup DJ Girl Talk was the place to be! Not long after his takeover of Compuware this winter, Gregg Gillis tore it up as fans gyrated onstage to get a closer feel of energy from his mixes of music, and being up there with him was nothing less of an exciting time. He truly won the hearts of his fans that night as they were jumping and dancing along side of him, in the seats, in the aisles, and all over the lawn. With mixes varying from Foxy Brown layered over Peter Gabriel and NIN to Aphex Twin and Souja Boy, every music fans ears were touched in some way! The light show he played in the background was hypnotizing while toilet paper was launching into the crowd from different angles making it a crazier fun kind of atmosphere. Locally, Bonnaroo, or wherever, you must see Girl Talk at least once! Pick up Girl Talk’s latest album All Day available for free download at www.illegalart.net/allday “Were hoping to plan another concert in the fall or do a showcase of upcoming artists, we’ll be doing more this year for sure.” closed Kate. After seeing the job they did with this show, I’m looking forward to see how they can top it.

To my surprise though, not everyone knew of these awards. I found as I told random friends and Detroit residents about the show that they were in the dark. Then I realized that these people, who had no clue of such a great event had something Danni Katastrophi - Dear Pilot in common, they didn’t care as much about music as many if us do. The passion that ran through the DMA’s “MUSIC WILL SAVE OUR CITY” BY: JORDAN SARAH WEATHERHEAD was thick and impenetrable. Judging by the killer outfits and energy, I knew it was going to be an incredible night as The heartbeat of Detroit was I slipped in the doors off the main red th thumping loud and hard on April 15 , carpet entrance. 2011. Bass is now helping young Brilliance launch his career just as he helped Eminem’s flourish. When I asked him about keeping the city alive Bass responded, “as long as we all stick

together and promote Detroit music, I think we’ll be in good shape.” As I got to sit down with Brilliance and DJ Shortstop from channel 95.5, Bass was onstage tuning his guitar. Just as Brilliance starting talking, Bass began playing the intro to ‘Lose Yourself’ by Eminem. Now, it goes without saying this gave me chills. I was sitting among people who are the best in the business, including Dave McMurray, the saxophone player known for his work with Kid Rock. As DJ Shortstop put it, “it’s incredible just to be brushing shoulders with these people”. Brilliance first got his break when a friend called him into the radio station to compete on air in a freestyle rap competition. After that he began networking, going to the radio stations, meeting djs, and attending clubs. Brilliance says, “Everything just kinda tied into to itself, it’s worked out perfectly.” As Brilliance took the stage as a part of the opening act on April 15th in one of his biggest performances of his career, that seemed to be true. It worked out perfectly. First the Detroit Piston’s Drumline performed an amazing opener before Brilliance and the rest of the Motor City players began singing new renditions of “Superstition” by Stevie Wonder and “Turn the Page” by Bob Seger. With the help of “The Selected of God Choir” (who were scene on the Chrysler Superbowl commercial with Eminem), the opening act is sure to be talked about for years to come. The choir made everyone in attendance stop and listen. Their hauntingly beautiful vocals captured the

B-DAB entire audience by their heartstrings. For those of you who weren’t there, not only did you miss a great party beforehand, and a smashing opening act. But after host Joe Nipote got done cracking jokes and telling a few stories; the night really took off with performances by Annabelle Road, The Vandellas, Polish Muslims, Jessica Hernandez and the Deltas, Dennis Coffey and Mayer Hawthorne. In the middle of the award show, Insane Clown Posse, won the Distinguished Achievement Award. Their speech was shockingly humble. No crazy antics, no jumping around saying “F*CK YOU” to the haters; just love. Telling about how they started by printing out fliers at Kinko’s and self-promoted until they were on top, was one of the biggest highlights of the 2011 DMAs. Their story should be a reminder that: DETROIT WILL NOT BACK DOWN. We may have a bad reputation, they may say we are a city on the brink of destruction, but those rumors do not define us. Instead of hearing the words: ANGRY, CRIME-

RIDDEN, BROKEN, AND LOST, let’s hear: PASSIONATE, DRIVEN, MOTIVATED, AND LOUD. Lets restore Detroit to its former glory, what always has been ours but has been muffled by the naysayers of the rest of the country. As DJ Shortstop said, “it’s not the top of the mountain, but it’s sure been a good climb so far.” The theme of the night clearly was “SUPPORT DETROIT MUSIC”. With presenters and winners stating that some radio stations are not giving the local music scene the publicity they deserve, their voice was definitely heard that night. Just as Jeff Bass stated during our conversation, “We need to ban together promote Detroit Music.” So many amazingly successful artists have come from Detroit, Michigan and so many

more are on their way to following along the same path. With acts like Brilliance, B-DAB, Mayer Hawthorne, and more, there is no telling how far Detroit can go. In a city of economic ruin, I believe music will bring it all back, we all should believe that. Along with the blossoming film industry, we can help this city, once beautiful and thriving, get its life back. Let the beat of our drums, the riffs of our guitars, and the shouts of our lyrics drown out all the negativity that surrounds Detroit. Let’s play louder and LOUDER and LOUDER, until we’re heard. . . VIDEO GAME & DVD REVIEW

By Ryan Lapointe

Even though it’s spring and the sun is shining (ok, well sometimes) we still have those rainy days to spend indoors. Once again I’m here to let our readers in on some of the newest entertainment to wash away the blues. We have also purchased a PS Move, which I highly recommend to anyone. Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12: The Masters: Best graphics and game play of any Tiger Woods to date. Features the Augusta National course and Masters Tournament, which if you’re playing with the Move, you truly feel as if you’re there. New features: you have your own caddy, albeit not a good one at times, debut of Jim Nantz and return of David Feherty to the commentary. Again, the PS Move is a BLAST for the real golfer, better than a lot of simulators that charge $30/hr. www.ea.com/tiger-woods

MLB 11 The Show: Can’t find a more “real” baseball game anywhere. Makes what can be a boring game to watch, exciting. Introduces “pure analog” controls and 3D compatibility, as well as a co-op mode and usage of the PS Move for the Home Run Derby. Great soundtrack and the Tigers are a damn good team in the game. www. us.playstation.com/games-and-media/games/mlb11-the-show-ps3.html Knights Contract: Action adventure game. One of my favorite features of this game is that is your character can’t die. A major challenge of this game is you have to keep a female “witch” alive (though she gives you magic powers). It has a lot of mini-games on bosses that can be very. Takes a long time to beat, and I took it! www. namcobandaigames.com/knightscontract/index2. html Killzone 3: Guerilla Games/Sony went all out for the 3rd version of this 1st person shooter. 3D compatibility and supports the Move gun. Has a great storyline and the graphics stand out remarkably during the well plotted cut scenes.

Multiplayer is a lot of fun with fantastic weaponry, and the 2 new DLC’s only add to the fun. www. killzone.com/kz3 Shift 2 Unleashed: Newest in the popular Need for Speed series. Features 145 different vehicles and it’s first racing game to introduce a “helmet” cam. Has an online feature called Autolog that adds to the competition, and since it’s a 1-player game, you’ll use it a lot. www.needforspeed.com/ shift2unleashed ESPN 30 for 30 Box Set, Part 2- Episodes 16-30 in the critically acclaimed series from “Sports Guy” Bill Simmons. Great episodes on the “The 2 Escobars” from Colombia as well as some on BMX racing, Michael Jordan, Tupac/Tyson, and Marion Jones. Definitely worth the time for any sports fan, you will learn a lot. Rumor has it they are releasing The Fab Five later this year! www.30for30.espn. com WWE-The True Story of Wrestlemania: Great documentary on the whole story from I to XXVII. Shows highlights from every city and how each one came to happen. They give a lot of love to Detroit for Wrestlemania III at the Silverdome and Wrestlemania XXIII at Ford Field. 2 discs of Wrestlemania classic matches including Hogan Vs Andre, and Macho Man vs. The Dragon. A must have for ANY wrestling fan. www.wweshop.com The Walking Dead: The Complete 1st season: Zombie TV series that has the best plot and character development of any zombie movie/show to date. That being said, it does lack in “zombie scenes” which may disappoint hardcore zombie fans. When the zombies are around, they are well acted and the makeup/costumes are superb. I would say this is a good family zombie series, if there were such a thing. Only 6 episodes, but new season coming this fall. www.amctv.com/shows/ the-walking-dead The Big Show: A Giant’s World: Feature on the “World Largest Athlete,” 7ft 500lb Paul Wight, aka The Big Show. Shows the career of this friendly giant including his WCW time, and his monumental fight with Floyd “Money” Mayweather. Most people would never expect such a big guy to be so genuine and kind, but this DVD shows that. (I met him years ago, and he is as cool as he is HUGE.) Features 20 matches from his someday “hall of fame” career. www.wweshop.com

“This thing has grown so quickly over the last 5 years, and it’s turned into the pinnacle festival for this genre of music.” Joe Litvag AEG LIVE Joe Litvag from AEG Live has been in the music business for 20 years. He’s put together some of the biggest concerts and festivals in the US. This year will be the 5th year he served as executive producer for the Rock on the Range (ROTR) festival, and he’s sure this will be the best. Says Litvag, “We’re throwing a party for all the loyal “rangers” Friday night. We’ve got Steel Panther and Lez Zeppelin … I’m sure there are going to be thousands of people there. It’s going to be nuts!” This year marks the 1st time ROTR has included Friday night into the mix. For the last 4 years, 50k people (most of them returning) made the trek to Columbus, Ohio to partake in some beer drinking and head banging good springtime

By Ryan Lapointe fun. “We played ROTR in 2008 and it was a great time,” stated Grosse Pointe native and Alter Bridge guitarist Mark Tremonti, “The promoters are great and it’s always a positive experience.” A positive experience is something that I have noticed all ROTR fans have had in common, and considering tickets have sold to all 50 states as well as outside the US, a lot of it has to do with the time that AEG puts into planning. When asked about the process of choosing the bands, Joe replied “We start looking at talent in June or July and start talking to agents and managers. We’re always looking for bands that are maybe doing a reunion or have a new album coming out. We pay a lot of attention to the radio and social media. We want to bring bands people want to see. It’s always been very important that we get the right mix of bands.” This year is no exception. Those not too hungover from Friday, will want to arrive early Saturday for a strong daytime lineup. Egypt Central, POD, Escape the Fate, and Danzig are just some of the 2nd and 3rd stage bands that will get the crowd warmed up for what will be a “Monster” main stage . 2nd stage vets Sick Puppies will be delivering some Aussie rock before the intensity picks up during Hinder, Alter Bridge, and Staind, who have all been on a short hiatus and are ready to show the “rangers” that they are still forces to be reckoned with. Playing in front of a sunset background, Jonathan Davis and Korn will then take the stage asking everyone “Are you ready?”, before they assault your eardrums and prepare you for your Nightmare. Returning to the stage they last performed with late drummer Jimmy “The Rev” Sullivan, Avenged Sevenfold headline the

evening to prove to everyone, that while a band member can be replaced, his music and legacy will live on forever. After Saturday nights show, the parties lead to the hotels and local bars where it’s always fun to bond with people from all over the country thru the common love of music. “The fans of this type of music are very loyal and we try to have something for everyone. There’s a wide variety of people young and old, and everyone gets along and has fun,” said Litvag. Of course what would a rock festival be without a closing day full of good times, good tunes, and plenty of crowd surfing? The Damned Things, Michiganders Pop Evil, Cavo, and Trapt will be amongst the 2nd and 3rd stage performers during the early day. Saving Abel and All That Remains kick off the main stage, and prior to the skinny jean kids flying all over the place during sets from A Day to Remember and Bullet for My Valentine (2nd and main stage respectively.) 2nd stage headliners Hollywood Undead close the 2 days festivals smaller stages with what they promise to be a “fun set,” and a warning to 1st day performers Rev Theory “We’re beefing with them, they think it’s gone, but it’s cooking like stew,” laughed Johnny 3 Tears and the rest of the guys. After 48 hours of face melting music, you must be asking yourself what could be left.

show of the year but we’ll make sure to dust the cobwebs off.” claimed Billy Howerdel, guitarist and founder of headliner, A Perfect Circle. “I played the 2nd stage with Ashes Divide in 2008 and it was massive, I can’t wait to get back.” So fellow Detroiters, dust off your rocking shoes, beer cozies, and of course your best Michigan hat and head on down to Columbus (GO BLUE!), and if you see Detroit Live Magazine, make sure you throw up horns and yell out “DETROIT ROCK CITY!”! As Joe Litvag put it:

“If you don’t come, you’re missing out. This has quietly become one of the premier festivals in the country because it’s in the Midwest and we don’t use the ‘alt’ bands that are hot right now. The festival is not just the bands playing the bill; it’s the incredible experience of being there for 2 Kicking of the final trio of bands, Corey Taylor days… If you listen to the fans, it’s an event. kind and Stone Sour will grace the stage with their combo of ferocious and melodic harmonies before of a ‘right of passage.’ We encourage everyone to come down. There are some good quality artists nightfall hits. The inmates take over the Asylum on the bill, the fans treat each other with respect as Disturbed whips everyone into frenzy. ROTR and it’s an all around great experience. continues their tradition We welcome anybody and everybody!” of concluding the weekend with a band that appeals to Rock on the Range will be taking place May all ages. 21st and 22nd at Crew Stadium in Columbus, OH. On May 20th, they will be holding a 5th “It feels good to headline! The last anniversary party that is free to ticketholder. thing we did was smaller venues and For more info check out we’re going from a 7-mth break into www.rockontherange.com such a big show. WHAT A LONG, STRANGE TRIP IT’S ABOUT TO BE By Rick Thompson 2011 is already a crazy year for medical marijuana in Michigan, and the landscape looks to get a lot more confusing before the year is out. With local initiatives, crazy ordinances, and statewide legislation being proposed, there are many ways for the cannabis activist to be involved in the movement- and many ways for the cannabis patient to become confused or scared. In Michigan, the main threat to patients and caregivers comes from local laws called ordinances. Passed by City Councils or their equivalent, these rules guide what can take place within the city limits legally, where it can go down, and who is allowed to participate. These ordinances always have to be read in public, at Council meetings, and it is there that the activist can let their feelings be known to the powers that be. These meetings are also the best way for patients to express their concerns and to stay up to date on what’s happening in their city. Livonia is well-known across the state for enacting an ordinance that bans all activities that violate federal law. This potentially unconstitutional ordinance was adopted by several other communities across Michigan as the cheapest and easiest way to deal with medical marijuana. Unfortunately, these communities are now learning that the easiest way has become the most expensive way because patients are suing the cities and towns that pass these ordinances. The American Civil Liberties Union is currently suing at least three cities who’ve passed the Livonia ordinance, and private attorneys are suing at least three others for enacting similar ordinances. Trampling on the rights of citizens just got really costly to these communities. One way to battle these Councils and Commissions is for the citizens to enact their own laws. This is accomplished through petitions and initiatives, where the citizens force the city to put an issue up for a vote of the people. The same method can be used to overturn bad laws but that battle is much harder. Local Compassion Clubs are great sources of information on existing laws, actions to change

them, and networking opportunities within the medical marijuana community. One community that’s taking the initiative method to control their city is Kalamazoo. Activists there are collecting signatures to advance a Lowest Law Enforcement Priority ordinance into the city’s charter. The LLEP’s mission is to direct police to treat marijuana offenses as the least important thing they have to do. This takes the fear away from casual marijuana users and allows the cops to focus on more serious issues in the city- and Kalamazoo has it’s share of problems that are more important than jailing people for medicating. Statewide legislation has already become a dangerous possibility in Michigan. In order to directly change the Voter Directed Initiative from 2008, the Michigan Congress needs to get 75% of the Senators and Congressmen to agree on the change. Since that seems like an impossible task at this point, the anti-medical marijuana forces have taken the path of changing other laws with the intent to drive people away from the medical marijuana program. Case in point: Senate Bill 17. Introduced to the Senate by former House Representative Rick Jones, this bill is designed to stop people from smoking marijuana in places he calls ‘Marijuana Bars’. Sen. Jones’ bill is about intoxicated driving but doesn’t attempt to change the driving code or the criminal code; instead he tries to accomplish this by changing the Health Code. Despite public statements about the bill being written to stop intoxicated drivers, the bill never mentions the words ‘drive’, ‘driving’, ‘automobile’, or ‘intoxicated’ one single time. The deceptive nature of this Bill strongly indicates Jones’ attempt to undermine the Medical Marijuana Act by subterfuge, deception and misdirection. Other bills circulating around the House and Senate already this year would address the issues of forfeiture laws and how the police have to share these revenues, and what level of THC or metabolites in your bloodstream constitutes driving while impaired. Senators have been hinting for months that they have a bill being prepared that would ‘correct’ all the perceived discrepancies between the MMA and the Criminal Code; when this bill is introduced, watch out.
