NIGHTMARE it’s the movement. Did you study him a lot?

My dad instilled in me the love for Rock –n- Roll with bands like Aerosmith, KISS, AC/DC, and of course, Alice Cooper. The last day of school every year my mom would blast “School’s Out” for me and my sister. I was even there, in my home state of North Dakota in 2006, when Alice Cooper received the key to the town, ‘Alice, ND’ (population 56yeah, seriously). Being only in my mid-twenties now, even I know the horrific beauty that Alice possesses. His music and showmanship redefined a whole category, known as ‘Shock Rock’. Born and raised in Detroit Rock City, it’s no wonder that Alice Cooper has an undying fan base in the Motor City. In January I got the chance to sit down with Johnny Rotten from Detroit’s only Alice Cooper Tribute Show, “The Nightmare”. From the moment he walked in the door for our interview, Johnny gave across a cool air of pure rock -n- roll and a wonderfully odd personality that was simply, ‘Alice’. DLM: So how long has ‘The Nightmare’ been together? JR: This’ll be our 4th year. DLM: I had the chance to look at some of your videos, and it’s not just the look that scarily resembles him,

JR: (After smiling proudly from my previous statement he continues) I watch him. My girlfriend is like ‘are you watching yourself again?’, because I tape everything. All our practices, all our shows, and I study them. And I do watch a lot of his old stuff and actually his vintage, Billion Dollar Babies era. Although we’re starting to get requests for some newer stuff, I don’t want to tell about the new stuff yet, but we’ve got a hand

full of it. DLM: So there are some surprises to come then? JR: Yup! Poison, is one of them. That was in the late eighties, maybe nineties. I do a lot of stuff from the seventies, you know, the original Alice Cooper stuff. (Takes a drink of his Jack) And one thing I try to do with the show is do all the gimmicks. EVERY SONG has some type of theatric in it. Whether it’s the ‘Cold Ethel’ doll I’m draggin’ around, or passin’ out the bloody roses to the girls during the ballads (smiles). People love that stuff. It’s hard to go see a cover band that’ll play all night long, that’ll actually KEEP you there, ‘all night long’. But if you’re there to see somebody that makes you think ‘I can’t wait to see what’s next’, they’re gonna stay all night. DLM: Great! So, how do you think Alice Cooper changed music? JR: I think the whole Shock Rock thing. The whole concept of Alice Cooper is vaudeville. All his songs tell a story, the theatrics go along with the songs, and one song leads into another, and it’s just a BIG show! He hung out with Marilyn Monroe and Groucho Marx. He was

whatever I’m allowed to do, I’ll do. So, nervous? (shakes his head, confidently) No. No nervousness. Johnny and I got to chat a bit off record afterwards, and let me just big into theater going- and I love the say, his heart is full of music. These guys are 110% committed to putting music but it wasn’t just that. No one on a full entertainment freak show else was doin’ that kinda stuff. And every time they step on stage. I will that’s the main reason I put, “Alice be rocking with my killer ‘Nightmare’ Cooper Tribute SHOW”. (He picks up the t-shirts he brought for me and t-shirt on February 11th at the Darian Counts as gifts) NOT a band. Dawghouse in Dearborn Hts, MI. And I stress that point because it is an The show is called ‘The Valentine’s Day Massacre’. He told me this, “I’m ‘event’. not just gonna hang myself of cut my DLM: So sitting before me, you’re head off. I’m gonna hang myself AND very reserved, very soft-spoken. So, besides the make-up, what helps you cut my head off.” Now come on, if you’re reading this, by now you can’t get into character before a show? JR: (Smirks and takes another drink) honestly tell me you want to miss that! I expect everyone to get there Uh, that’s a good question. Actually, the transformation of it. Getting into early and see this amazingly hellish the gear does it for me. Just the aura show that you won’t soon forget! of the room. It’s like walking through -See you in your nightmares… -JSW the door before we go on stage. It’s like, Johnny then Alice (makes a swift *For t-shirts and more information on The Nightmare, check them out on movement with his hands). And the Facebook and MySpace. lights go on, and I just play it. (For the full interview with Johnny, DLM: So for people who haven’t seen the show, tell them what they’re log onto detroitlivemagazine.com missing. JR: I’ll say it like this, seeing The Nightmare, and the full production of the show, is probably the next best thing to gettin’ your head cut off and seein’ the real Alice. It’s not like he goes on tour every year, so it’s not like we have to wait ‘til he’s gone to celebrate his music. DLM: Are there any upcoming shows they can catch? JR: (big smile) There is! We’re gonna play the Dawghouse in Dearborn Hts. It’s gonna be the smallest venue we’ve played in with limited seating. So it’ll be a small, more intimate setting. DLM: Do you get more nervous playing a small show, when you can see everyone up close and personal? JR: Oh no! I like being out amongst the crowd. I’ll come and sit by people with the snake around my neck. Some bars let me walk on the bar and stuff,

UNDER OATH by Ryan Carney

If you haven’t heard of the Grammy Award nominated Christian metal band Underoath, then this might be the year that you find it difficult to not hear the noise they’re making in today’s music scene. Formed in 1997 in Tampa, they have just released their seventh album, (0) Disambiguation and are definitely ready for the ride! Having just parted ways with the only original remaining member has set the band reeling into yet another new direction. “Aaron Gillespie (now ex drummer/vocalist) telling us that he decided to leave only moments before we had to walk out on stage definitely made for an emotional last show, but there’s no place better to work through such issues than on stage,” stated bassist Grant Brandell. Though the band and Aaron had decided to part ways, rest assured the relationship between Aaron and Underoath is just as tight as it ever was! When asked if the band was nervous about moving forward without Aaron, Grant said, “The band was definitely more excited than nervous. Seeing this as another chance to try something new, which truly follows in Underoath’s fashion. We talked about a handful of other drummers we had in mind, but unfortunately they all were involved in other projects.” One drummer the band discussed but didn’t call (as they didn’t think he’d be into what they were doing) was ex Norma Jean drummer, Daniel Davison. On a whim, they made a phone call and asked Daniel to come down and just fill in for an upcoming tour, but as soon as he showed up to practice, they all started writing together. Seeing how well everything fit, it was then that they knew

that they found their new drummer.

The band spent the next month and a half grinding out they’re new album, (0) Disambiguation. After all the new songs were set in stone, the band hit the studio with producer Jeremy Griffith and long time producer and friend, Matt Goldman, to record their new sound. Grant said (in reference to working with Matt), “He’s always wanting to try the weirdest things, let’s put this cymbal in this corner and hit it with this thing, and it’s always so comfortable working with him too.” After the band was done with the new record, they knew that they had turned to the next chapter in Underoath history. Now being recharged, regrouped and road ready, the band couldn’t be more excited for this current tour. Not only because it’s the CD release tour for (0) Disambiguation, but “It’s so crazy to have Thursday opening for US!” said Grant, “Not only do we look up to them as musicians but also because all the guys in Thursday are just good dudes in general!” So far, 2011 seems like it’s going to be a great year for Underoath. Two months into the year and they have a new drummer, a new record under their belt, and are on a headlining tour with one of their favorite bands opening for them. Like I said, if you don’t know who Underoath is, this will be the year that you finally will. Go grab a copy of the NEW album (0) Disambiguation by Underoath, featuring ex Norma Jean Drummer Daniel Davison, and catch them live February 12th with Thursday @ The Royal Oak Music Theater. I finally am at the being made! album. Featuring the single “Country Boy,” point that it’s coming out, and all the obstacles which hit #1 on the CMT video chart, the 5 have been hurdled. DL: What was your influence for song EP entitled Town Line was influenced “Country Boy?” over 10 years ago while Aaron was on tour DL: Why just an EP and not an LP? with our own Kid Rock. Bob Harris

Bob && Benny Benny Bob By Benny Jet & Bob Harris

HEY YOU! That is my friendly hook to get you to actually read this column. Because it has some interesting stuff about Detroit rock and roll bands. Yes, yours truly, Benny from Benny and the Jets Band says:

Eddie Leighton, recently voted “Best Detroit Guitarist” formerly of Curtis Hyflash band and the Eddie Leighton Project. You can Google or YouTube his new video “Brick by Brick.” And Sykofish, a Detroit rock and roll band!

I often ask people about Detroit bands. Who they have heard of? Who are the good ones? Names You would think with the invention of like Sykofish, Send More Cops, Pistol Day Parade, computers and Google and Facebook and iPhone, Blackberry Brandy, Remedy, and 50 Amp Fuse often things would be so much easier. Easier to know area comes up. It DOES surprise me how few band names bands, name recognition, who they are, and where are known to the general public. they play. Do you know what Sykofish is? Or Shitzen Giggles or JAM Heads? Or who Eddie Leighton is? How about Miranda Cosgrove, Gunner Ross or Bob Harris?

www.bennyandthejets.com

Well nowadays you can Google just about any question in the world and find the answer. Except my partner Bob Harris who doesn’t have a computer, so that slows things down a lot! So, Bob Harris is my partner, who wrote the Motor City Rock and Roll book, promotes concerts, etc., and may be the only guy who has never used Google! Gunner Ross is a pretty big time drummer. He’s played in a lot of Detroit bands back in the day, I think it was the Almighty Strut and that Ted Nugent guy? He was on the cover of last month’s Detroit Live Magazine with a new band called Send More Cops. In that FIVE degrees of separation game, the guitar player in Send More Cops, Joey Gados who used to play in the bands Muggsy, Weapons, and the Points with Cub Koda. Joey also has a guitar playing son Joey Jr. who was featured in the Jack Black movie “School of Rock.” He was the kid who stole the show wearing the cool top hat. Also in that movie was a young lady named Miranda Cosgrove who was also featured in last month’s Detroit Live Magazine. Some may know Miranda as TV star iCarly. Man that is a lot of info. You may have to reread that paragraph. Or even Google it! The iCarly TV show is about two girls who have a very popular web TV show, something Bob Harris would love to do! So that brings us to JAM Heads, a Detroit Live advertiser, who makes banners, drum heads, T-shirts, posters, and all kinds of band stuff. Shitzen Giggles, a music emporium, who buy, sell and trade music stuff, located inside the Taylor Trade Center.

14 Detroit Live Magazine - Get into it!

I talked to DJ Mad Man Mike about the Detroit band scene. Google his name, he has a HUGE band link page. Mike had just seen Ron Buzzie’s band “Fall Out” and mention Killer Flamingo’s, Christina Chriss, and Ray Street Park. Mansfield Park, Jane Doe, 3 Whisker Betty. Mike and Ron had just been talking about some of the old bands, Salem Witchcraft, MC5, Steve King and the Dittles, Bobby Lewis and the Cracker Jack band, even BENNY AND THE JETS BAND! Hey that is my band! Well I guess better to be talked about than NOT? I told them check out Howling Diablo’s, Illegal, Chain Reaction, Howard Glazer, Critical Bill, Sweet Crystal, Buggs Beddow and Ty Stone and the Truth. (Ty was on a past cover of DLM and opened for KID ROCK for his Ford Field B-day Party) When you look back at “the old days” before computers, bands like Bob Seger, Mitch Ryder, Ted Nugent, even before national fame, they seemed like they had local recognition. It just seems harder and harder for bands to gain that name recognition now. Bands and musicians still need newspaper, magazine, radio, TV and our support. So, go see a band. Tell them you saw their name here. Tell us if you liked them. Show this to your friends or forward it to your friends, your Twitters, Facebooks, etc. Yes, we know YouTube and Facebook rule the world. Support LIVE music, Support Detroit Live Magazine www.detroitlivemagazine.com. The MC5 band once said if you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of the problem! Google it! FALL PREY Photos by M.G. Nader

For the last 5 years the band Fall Prey has been clawing its way to the top of the Detroit rock and roll heap. Yet it’s been in the last year that they’ve truly began to come into their own. Formed in 2005, the band (consisting of Amanda Jacob - Vocals , Rob Lyberg - Lead Guitar, Eric Dejules - Rhythm Guitar, George Kalamas – Drums, Joe Bassist) spent several years performing in southeastern Michigan with front person Amanda Jacob at the helm. Amanda, who started with this band at the ripe old age of 16, spent a couple years performing with the band but around 2007 left the band to pursue the academic career. Yet, as 2010 dawned, Amanda found herself reflecting fondly on the time she spent as the singer for Fall Prey. So when she was approached by the band to reclaim her rightful spot as front person she (now with psychology degree in hand) jumped at the opportunity.

feel it’s a competition, and it is to a point, but I think that if the bands can work together promoting each other and promoting the scene it benefits everyone. On the flip side if a band gets a reputation as selfish or stepping on other bands they are going to lose more connections than they make and ultimately hurt their chances of success. DL: Have you noticed a big difference in the band between when you were originally in it and your return?

Amanda: Well, yeh. A few years ago we weren’t really sure of the impact we were making. It was much more of a learning process. But now we’re all a bit older and much more cohesive as a band. Amanda: I was just flattered that they would want We’ve made a conscious decision that this is what we want and this is what we are willing to do to me to come back. They spent several years with achieve it. Now we are all out there promoting the some talented vocalists fronting the band and for band, booking shows and making contacts. Having me to step back in was not only humbling but felt a bit like a homecoming. I worked hard for the last everyone involved has helped push us and give us some great momentum going into 2011. few years in college but the band always stayed in the back of my mind. DL: Has anything surprised you or caught you off guard since you’ve been back with the band? George: We were glad to have Amanda back. Granted we had some talented singers while she was gone. But Amanda’s return was exactly what this band needed, when it needed it. DL: Amanda, can you give us a little info on your musical beginnings? Amanda: Well I’ve literally been writing songs since I can remember. Writing lyrics has always been something that has come naturally to me. As far back as middle school I’ve always written. Yet writing music was foreign to me. Granted after a couple of years with Fall Prey I now have a bit more ability to write from a musical standpoint as opposed to strictly lyrical, but primarily when I write it’s lyrics and lyrical melody first. DL: What’s your take on the Detroit music scene? Amanda: I think it’s very important to work together within the scene. It seems some bands

Amanda: Probably the biggest shock to me is when I talk to people about the band and they ask the name I tell them and they say “Oh I’ve heard of you guys.” It just pleasantly surprises me that we have made enough of an impression to be remembered.

EASTSIDE BANDS

As they should be remembered. With the release of their 2010 three song EP, people are taking notice. Songs like “9 2 5, Far Enough and Stone to Clay” combine the velveteen sultriness of Amanda’s powerful voice, incredible power and dynamics of the band and melodic hooks that give Fall Prey’s music a haunting familiarity. The power and “bigness” of their sound is a result of hours spent in the studio getting exactly the right mix. DL: In addition to you returning to the band you’ve recently added bassist Joe Michalek. What can you tell us about the newest member of the band? Amanda: We are really glad to have found him. He had big shoes to fill when our last bassist and good friend Mike Strasser left the band but he is totally up for the challenge. Being as talented as he is, he was able to step right in and perform the songs as if he’s been there all along. Joe has not only contributed performance wise, but his personality also fits right in, which I feel is incredibly important to us. We’re glad to have him and are looking forward to getting him into the studio to record our next CD.

DL: What’s on the horizon for Fall Prey? Amanda: A lot! We are getting ready to get back into the studio to start recording on our new release. We’ve been working on a fresh batch of songs that I feel will be among our best yet. In particular, I’m excited to begin to lay down tracks for our new song “Disco”. We’ve been playing it live for awhile and getting fantastic response. At a recent performance, Roger, from the band Forest Wade, who produced our last release heard it and immediately invited us back into the studio. Also, we were recently contacted by producers of a popular TV series filmed here in Detroit about doing some film/video work.

Linkin Park Show Review

Hearing Linkin Park for the 1st time ten years ago, I have to admit I wasn’t a big fan. When they released their political concept album A Thousand Suns last year, I had the same puzzled look on my face as I did than. Well, just like before, seeing them live in concert made my opinions drastically change for the better.

By Ryan Lapointe

along with their diverse fans, and when they performed their hit “Bleed it Out,” but mixed in the most angry of LP songs with it, the ending of “A Place for My Head.” They closed out the show with their first hit, “One Step Closer,” and not a single person young or old was at a lack of telling the person next to them to SHUT UP! Chester made sure to send us home with a blood The crowd at Joe Louis was quite the mixture of young and old. A few times I saw curling growl that made us remember that some gray hairs (just slightly) singing along Linkin Park is still a force to be reckoned with. with what may be have been their teenage kids. I couldn’t help but notice the wedding bands the members of LP were proudly wearing, a sign that we’ve all grown up. The show was a great hour and half set of LP jams old and new. At times you could see the difference in enthusiasm in the crowd on some of the songs, but never once were people not clapping and hanging on vocalist Chester Bennington’s every word. I will be the first to say that hearing some of the songs from A Thousand Suns live, did a lot more for me than when I was jamming it in the car last year Occasionally, a baby most pit broke out and it took until the first encore before I saw the nights only crowd surfer during “Crawling.” A couple highlights of the evening was the times Chester and Mike Photo by Ryan Lapointe Shinoda came out into the crowd and sang For more info check out www.linkinpark.com

Bedwell, formerly of Cybertrybe, I found two gentlemen who could take my ideas to another level resulting in the award winning solo CD, “A Contract with Satan” and the last N-2 submission release, “Some Creatures Just Wont Die”. Now I work with Stiverson, who I believe has the potential to bring N-2 submission to new heights.

First I’d like to say it’s great to be back. 2010 was a rough year for me in

health, while it was a great half year, music wise. One of my all time favorite projects (N-2 submission) was reformed. Besides having a killer guitarist and an excellent keyboardist I was able to recruit an outstanding young musician named Stiverson to run the electronics and techno portions of our techno/ metal style. The lesson that I took to heart here is that sometimes it is OK to give up some of the control. Thanks to Blake Chen (the Haunted Troubadour aka The Hungry Ghost) and Bryant

Along the way last year, we were fortunate enough to receive a plaque in from a veterans’ organization in Port Huron for our performance in a yearly benefit to send care packages to our troops overseas. Just as we had things rolling however, my bad health habits got the best of me. After spending 3 months thinking that I had a chest cold that wouldn’t go away, Mrs. Impaler made me go to the emergency room at Providence Hospital. The doctor told me that had I not gone in, I would not have lasted another 48 hours. It turned out that I was suffering from Congestive Heart Failure. I had to spend time in the hospital for the first time in my life. Soon after I was finally released, Mrs. Impaler had to have surgery for the third time in the last five years. Through it all, my new band (who hardly even knew me yet) stood by me.

The term family is often used loosely. I see guys refer to each other as “brother” all of the time. Women often call each other sisters as well. But when push comes to shove, who can you count on? I’m not talking about things like loaning money (I’ve got more relatives than I can count that I wouldn’t loan more than 5 dollars to). But those people willing to get you from point A to point B in an emergency. Band members can be that second family. Only time will truly tell. You can argue with your brother to the point that people watching expect a fist fight. This is true with band mates as well. The difference is, you are stuck with your brother. You can walk away from that band (and that band mate) at anytime. But the bands that are close and thus the bands that can stay together are the ones that can have these arguments and still write songs together and are there for each other on stage Friday and Saturday night.

A band mate should be able to tell you not to drive when he or she sees that you are drunk. That band mate should be the one person you believe when they tell you you’re wrong. If that band mate has to leave for whatever reason there should be no ill will or sense of abandonment. But you will miss that member every much as he or she will miss you. In life, you have to be willing to sacrifice something to get something. In a band, you’re giving away a part of your trust. Good band mates depend on each other and reward each other’s faith. Any four good musicians can produce good music (you’ll see that at any open mic in Redford) but, just like a sports team, it takes a chemistry to make you “a band”. Look at the people in your own band. If these people meet such criteria, then you have not just a band, but a group of friends

for life.

By Ryan Lapointe man wearing a Patriots jersey, and I was thinking what a character this guy must’ve been, wanting to be buried in a Pats jersey instead of a suit. It made me think of all the stories that were in his life. We already wrote the title track “Going Out in Style” which is a fictitious party view of a person’s own wake, looking down wondering “who’s log onto gonna show up, this is going to be a big detroitlivemagazine.com to win and autographed party,” and here I was finding myself face to face with it. It made me look back and CD and vinyl edition of DKM’s “Going out in Style” come up with the idea of a whole life story. For the past 15 years, they have stayed true to their punk roots and many believe they are one the few who still stick to them. Ghost Hunting/Paranormal Investigating is our hobby. One of our members is a machinist, another works for a company that Interview with the Ghost Hunter-Robin sells electrical supplies and I am retired Lemkie of from a company that makes military Ghost Hunters Of Southern Michigan vehicles. Some of you may remember for the October Describe what is done at a typical issue of Detroit Live, there was an article in investigation. my column titled “The Ghost of Marlow’s” about Marlow’s Chill and Grill, a bar in When we arrive we do what we call a Brownstown that my band plays at every walk through so that our sensitives can Wednesday. Here, pictures. The entire investigation is tape Robin Lemkie, the founder of the paranormal recorded as well. investigation group discusses some very interesting points about the paranormal, and Define “sensitive”. discloses some of the findings at Marlow’s. When did the Ghost Hunters of Southern Michigan begin, and whose idea was it to form the group and what prompted it? I am the founder of GHOSM and I started the group in 1994 because I wanted to find other people like me with an interest in the paranormal. What is your philosophy or “mission statement?” Our goal is to find evidence of life after death and to document our findings. What type of work do you guys do?

A sensitive is a person who can sense spirits in a number of different ways. Some sensitives can see, hear and communicate with spirits while others can see but not hear and vice versa. Some sensitives pick up what a spirit is feeling, like happiness or sadness, but do not see or hear. . What types of technology do you use and how does it help prove the existence of ghosts? We use several digital cameras, one or two tape recorders, two or three infra-red camcorders, an infra-red trap camera and a digital thermometer. Occasionally we will use one of our EMF (Electro-Magnetic Field) meters. We believe that the voices, video and pictures we capture are proof of the paranormal. What’s your feeling on pictures of “orbs” that we see described as ghosts all over the internet?

I am able to see and hear spirits and I can also communicate with them when they allow me to. How long have you known that you were a medium? Did you have experiences as a child? I have known since I was five or six years old that I could see and hear things that other people could not. When I was very young I would see shadow people in my home which was very frightening. When I was about ten years old and my family would be together watching TV in the living room I began to feel that there was a family member missing, and I sensed that this family member was in the hallway, watching us and waiting. My parents would ask me why I was staring down the hall instead of watching TV but I never had enough nerve to tell them. Years later I learned that my mother had suffered a miscarriage in our house when she was five months pregnant and I still wonder if I was sensing that child. Are there other mediums in the group?

I have read that places are haunted by spirits who have not “crossed over.” Can you describe your feelings on this subject? I agree. Some people chose to stay here when they die rather than going into the Light. Have you ever helped a spirit “cross over?” We have helped many spirits cross over. We light a white candle, say a prayer to God and concentrate on the White Light. As we are doing this we speak to the spirits and encourage them to go into the Light. Does the haunting stop after that?

Yes. We have had amazing results and we have been contacted by people years after we There are three other sensitives in our group conducted their investigations are they have but we each have different kinds of ability. told us that they have not experienced any paranormal activity in their homes since we How do mediums help in an investigation? were there. Fall Prey cont.

As a matter of fact they’ve flown in from Chicago this weekend so see us perform live. We will be performing at the TNT (Ted Nugent Tribute) show with Gunner Ross from the Ted Nugent band on Feb 5th at the All Around bar in Taylor. We are really excited about that show due to the incredible amount of talent on the bill. In addition to Gunner Ross, Wyatt from Forest Wade will be there, Rick from Ray Street Park as well as quite a few more big named locals who, we are hoping will get up and perform Ted songs with Gunner. It’s a great idea for a concert and we can’t wait to not only put on a great show, but to watch one as well!
