In December of 2010, Detroit Live was invited to cover the 2010 “\Night 89X Stole Christmas” concert at the Fillmore. In doing so, we had the chance to speak with a band that epitomizes the work ethic of Detroiters. After 3 years of constant touring and over 300 shows, Australia’s Sick Puppies have carved out not only a spot in the hearts of live music fans all over the world but have topped the charts with anthems like “All the Same”, “Odd One” and “Maybe”. Over the last couple of years Shim, Emma and Mark have always been great about speaking with Detroit Live Magazine. This year was no different. Photo by Shane Glenn

Happy New Year Hope everyone enjoyed their holidays! I had a very laid back and stress free holiday, and you’re probably thinking “what the hell, that’s not fair!” But it was, and it was GREAT! I decided that this year I would just go with the flow, keep a smile on my face through the long lines and horrible traffic, and I refused to let the stress get to me… and it worked out pretty well too. So a New Year has begun and every time this happens everyone starts reflecting on what they’ve accomplished the previous year, and what they plan on doing in the New Year. This can go one of two ways… either you’re totally happy with what you’ve done with your life and excited to start a new year…or you’re completely depressed because things just didn’t turn out the way

you wanted or planned. But that’s what they say is cool about a new year; it’s supposed to be a fresh start or a new beginning. Honestly, as a person in my mid 20’s without any kids I feel Christmas and New Years is totally over rated. Call me scrooge and I’ll say bah hum bug, but the holidays force people to do crazy things and have unnecessary expectations. First of all, the holidays make you feel like you MUST be happy, so if you’re not, you feel absolutely even more horrible then you normally would. The holidays also have a habit of making you realize how alone you are. On Christmas everyone is with their family, which is great, but what if you don’t have any family? And then on New Year’s you’re supposed to kiss the one “you love” at midnight…this just makes single people sad, and then they get hammered and make out with a complete stranger. People rack up their credit cards, and practically go bankrupt just to buy Christmas gifts…this is INSANE TO ME! Christmas isn’t about buying your kids 15,000 presents, it’s about showing the people you love that you care, and spending time with them. Actually Christmas is about the birth of Jesus Christ, but many people seem to forget that. Then there’s so much pressure for New Year’s Eve to be the most awesome night of the year, but midnight always comes way too fast, and at the end of the night you realize you once again spent way too much money on a mediocre party that lasted four hours. Well now that you’ve read my opinion and listened to me complain, if you agree with me keep this in mind for next year. I promise it will help, and then you can enjoy the holiday as much as I did this year. Don’t hype things up or have high expectations. Just go with the flow and enjoy yourself. That way you won’t stress yourself out as much, and you might even save yourself a butt load of cash. Oh, and one more thing. Your happiness is defined by you, and only you. Just because you don’t have everything you want yet doesn’t mean it’s never going to happen. Everything happens when it’s supposed to happen, and it all happens for a reason. Now Let’s Do a Quick Recap of 2010: In October thirtythree Chilean miners were trapped in an

Miranda Cosgrove As a parent, I’m always looking for family friendly, wholesome entertainment, to enjoy with my 9 yr old son Connor. A few years ago I came across a movie I thought would be perfect for Connor and I. Starring Jack Black and having a rock and roll theme the movie “School Of Rock” hit the nail on the head. Featuring local guitarist Joey Gados Jr., the movie provided an excellent introduction to bands like AC/DC, Led Zeppelin and Rush for my son while providing humor we both could enjoy. Among the cast was a young unknown actress making her feature film debut. Future child star Miranda Cosgrove’s portrayal of sassy but sweet Summer Hathaway was the unexpected stand out performance of the film. As anyone with young kids knows once you find a movie they like, it tends to get watched over and over and over. As I watched and enjoyed the film on DVD for the 400th time it became impossible to ignore the fact that young Miranda was a talented actress. She delivered her lines and interacted with comedic rocker Jack Black like a seasoned professional. Soon thereafter Miranda appeared as Megan, the mischievous yet lovable, sinister young sister to Drake and Josh on Nickelodeon’s “Drake and Josh”. Impressed and happy to see her career developing I couldn’t help but wonder what her range of acting was. Her role as Meagan was very similar to Summer Hathaway. So when Nickelodeon premiered their new show “iCarly”, I was pleasantly surprised to see Miranda in the title role as the sweet and lovable Carly. Over the last few years the show’s skyrocketing popularity has acted as a launch pad for Miranda’s career. In addition to starring in the 2010 animated blockbuster Despicable Me with Hollywood big hitters like Steve Carell and Russel Brand, Miranda has recently launched her singing career.

it difficult to play Carly since she seems nothing like them?

Darian: How much writing do you do on the “Sparks Fly” album? Is it mostly you or do you have input from others?

Miranda: Megan and Summer were fun roles. I really like playing a character that’s kind of sassy or mean. I feel like Carly is very similar to me. I kind of feel like in the future I might want to play a character like Summer or Megan again.

Miranda: Well there is definitely collaboration with a lot of talented performers. One song I really worked hard on was the song “Kissing You”. It took me a couple years to finish it but it was one of the last songs recorded for the CD. I also co-wrote a song named “Adored”. Other songs on the album were songs that I had heard and just really liked and wanted to include them on the album. Darian: Do you have a favorite track on the CD? Miranda: I really like the song “Kissing You” because it reminds me of the boy I wrote it about. But I also like “Brand New You”, it’s sort of a girl powered song talking to a guy saying “I’ll find a brand new you”. Darian: Who are some of your musical influences? Miranda: I really love Tom Petty, Aerosmith, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles and Nirvana. I’m also a fan of Katy Perry, Gwen Stefani and Alanis Morissette. Darian: Can you tell me a little about the band that is backing you up on tour?

Miranda: Well, I got kind of lucky with the band. I met them thru a mutual friend and I went to meet up with them and play some of the songs and see how it went. I I had the opportunity to talk with Miranda was pretty nervous since they had been together for years and I wasn’t sure if to discuss her they’d want to add me in. But I’ve been acting and working with them now for the last few music years and things are great. They’re a band career called the Click Five. I’m hoping we can play some of their songs on tour. Darian: Your role as “Megan” on Drake and Josh was pretty similar to Summer Hathaway in School of Rock. Was

8 Detroit Live Magazine - Support your local musician!

Darian: Do you talk to the guys form Drake and Josh much? Miranda: Actually, yes I do. As a matter of fact I just went and saw Drake perform at the Roxy a couple of months ago. I’ve always really loved his music. He’d always be playing guitar on the set of Drake and Josh and he influenced me to learn guitar. I talk to Josh quite a bit too. I just ran into him the other day at an ice cream shop by my house. Darian: Are you close with the cast of iCarly? Miranda: Yes, and it’s cool because we can drive now. Well, not me but Nathan does and sometimes he, Jeanette and I will go driving around after filming and just hang out. Wreak a little havoc.

Miranda: Gwen Stefani. I love her. I went to a No Doubt concert and got to meet her and I was completely freaking out. It’s funny because usually if I meet someone I’m excited to meet like Shea Lebouf or someone, I try really hard to act like I’m not star struck. I’ll go out of my way to act casual, sometimes too casual. But with Gwen Stefani I just couldn’t do it, I was totally freaking out. Load up the kids and get on down to the Fillmore on Feb 1st to see Miranda Live. It’ll be a great family night out.

www.mirandacosgroveofficial.com

Darian: Are there any movies in the works for you? Miranda: Well we’re getting ready to do Despicable Me 2. That’s a bit different for me because it’s animated. Darian: Do you have a tutor that’s going on tour with you? Miranda: Yeh. I’m in the 12th grade now and am looking into colleges. I just took the SAT’s so I’m waiting to see how I did. I’m kind of nervous. But in the mean time I’ve applied to USC, NYU, Brown and Berkeley. Darian: What makes you nervous? Miranda: It’s funny because I’m so used to making iCarly I don’t get nervous, but in the beginning I was very nervous. Performing music live also makes me nervous. But I like the feeling. Sometimes it’s good to be nervous. Darian: Who are stars that you’ve met that you’ve been star struck by?

VIDEO GAME REVIEWS Its cold outside, and what better time for some video games and DVD watching. We @ Detroit Live once again had the honor of checking some new ones out and giving out readers the quick scoop. Call of Duty: Black Ops Short game, seems like main influence is the online play. Holds up well with past COD’s, with a Cold War storyline. If you like online play, this is THE game. If you just like it for storyline, may be better to borrow from a friend since its wont take you long. Includes the popular zombie game which can leave you entertained for hours. www.callofduty.com Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare Great expansion to awesome game. Whole new storyline, albeit much shorter. The gunfights are a lot harder since you MUST get head shots to take them out. The “Red Eye” will be your savior. The new horses are really cool, especially the “apocalypse” ones (beware the zombie horses though, they will frustrate you) www.rockstargames.com/ reddeadredemption Powergig: Rise of the 6 String Didn’t get to try the Powergig guitar, and it seems like the game doesn’t favor not using it. The onscreen is a lot different than GH and RB, and you can’t play with 2 players on guitar. Real good soundtrack and has a small storyline to the game. www.powergig.com Monopoly Streets: 3d video game version of the popular game, plus a couple different versions of the classic mode. A lot faster than the board game and you can trust the banker here! Fun party game. www.ea.com/monopoly-streets Tony Hawk: Shred: Comes with real board, and has been greatly improved since Tony Hawk: Ride. Definitely geared more towards kids than the old school Pro Skater fans. Should have an option to use the controller instead of the board. Real skateboarders will enjoy very much. www.shredgame.com WWE Raw vs. Smackdown 2011: Lots of new match options, and very interactive backstage scenes. Many WWE superstars available and extensive create mode. Gameplay and controls are simple and easy to use. Great game for any WWE fan http://community.smackdownvsraw.com/ Splatterhouse: Remake of old 16bit game. Very bloody, and prepare to do a lot of button mashing. Average length so it’s a beatable

storyline. Includes a heavy metal soundtrack featuring a lot of big names. Fun game! www.splatterhousegame.com Saw 2: Flesh and Blood All puzzles, some very challenging and realistic to movie scenes. The fighting system is flawed, since it’s not really “fighting,” and can become frustrating. Fun for fans of the Saw movies. http://www.konami.com/games/saw2 Cabelas Dangerous Hunts 2011 Comes with scoped shotgun, and definitely helps to have a good size TV. Very difficult at times and the different animals can be very challenging. Great game for all the Michigan hunters out there http://www.cabelas.com/video-gamescabelas-dangerous-hunts-2011-game-2 Rock of the Dead: Locally developed game. This is a zombie game (seems to be a trend) that you play with a guitar. Features voices by Neil Patrick-Harris and Rob Zombie. Need to hit correct notes to kill zombies and other creatures. Cheesy but fun game! www.rockofthedead.com Hasbro Family Game Night 3: It is possible to play Twister on a console system. Includes the Game of Life, which isn’t one of my favorites. Also has Mousetrap and Clue which are really fun, and a Yahtzee card game which a lil’ confusing. Really fun party game and a lot faster than the board version. http://www.ea.com/games/hasbro-familygame-night WWE The 50 Superstars of All Time: Great list, but very controversial. Picked by the WWE talent, not the fans. 2 discs of matches spanning many decades. Great DVD for young and old WWE fans WWE Bobby “The Brain” Heenan: 2 disc set featuring one of the greatest if not the greatest managers of all time. Talks about his growing up and beginnings in the wrestling world. Funny feature on the origin of the “Weasel” nickname. Can’t forget the historic Andre vs. Hogan match from Wrestlemania 3 @ The Silverdome!! http://www.wwe.com/shop/dvd/ Slayer: The Vinyl Conflict All 10 Slayer albums on 11 records, remastered on high quality vinyl. What more can you say? Slayer, the way they started, but better quality. Break out the Ouija!! www.slayer.net

As the New Year dawns it’s only natural to look back on the past year and look forward with anticipation to the upcoming year. For Detroit Live it’s been a fantastic year. We’ve met a lot of talented new bands and enjoyed another year as part of the world’s greatest rock and roll scene. In addition we’ve had the pleasure of partnering with many Detroit businesses to help increase their bottom line and drive customers to their business. January 2010 For Detroit Live magazine, 2010 opened with a bang. Our 2010 New Years Eve Blow Out was held at Rack and Roll in Riverview. Unlike most of our Detroit Live concerts, 2010’s celebration was a tribute show. With tributes to Alice in Chains, Alice Cooper, AC/ DC and Black Sabbath, some of Detroit’s best tribute bands got a chance to strut their stuff. Smack Alice, The Nightmare, Dirty Deeds and Banned From Earth did an incredible job of making everyone in the room feel as if they were at an arena show with their favorite national band. It was impressive how these guys could reproduce the look and feel of some of rock and roll’s iconic bands.

10pm if you weren’t at this event you probably weren’t getting in. As usual, the line up consisted of who is who in the Detroit local music scene. Bands like Pistol Day Parade, Ray Street Park, Fall from Disgrace, Myth Not Man, 11th Hour, Remora, Attracting Insanity, Underland, Gates of Babylon, and Forest Wade pooled their collective musical creativity to pull off one of the year’s best shows. In addition artist Marni Sison and Paul Samotis kicked the off show with incredible acoustic performances. 2010’s Dirty Dozen was a raging success. Thousands of Detroit music fans are eagerly anticipating Dirty Dozen 2011.

October 2010 The Detroit Live Magazine 2 Year Anniversary Blow Out! In October we celebrated our 2 year anniversary at the Rack and Roll in Riverview in grand fashion with some of the best bands Detroit has to offer. Innocent Till Dark, Coverband Killers, Highwater, The Pills, Underland and Ray Street Park all pitched in to create a rock and roll celebration that was one of the best in DL Magazine history. Packing the club by 9pm is no small task, yet from the fresh faced boys of Innocent Till Dark to the veterans of Ray Street Park it seemed to be March 2010 a task the Detroit rockers were up to. and go over each song and figure out who has what song on cassette, album or God forbid eight track. Now, hopefully, at least one member of the band was a part of the RCA 12 albums for a penny club. But in all likelihood that wasn’t the case. So conversations went something like this:

The act or art of being in a rock and roll band has pretty much remained the same since the early days of rock and roll. It’s always been a group of guys in their parent’s garage or basement learning songs that were popular at the time. Usually, in the early phase, one or two guys actually know how to play and the rest learn as they go. Eventually the ones who don’t know how to play figure it out or get replaced by people who do. Over the years, the style of play has changed due to influences of people like Eddie Van Halen, Jimi Hendrix, Neil Peart, and Billy Sheehan, but the fundamentals have remained the same. Practice your skills, practice your songs, and rehearse as a band. From the 1950’s up until about the year 2000 not much except style has changed. Yet today, the act of being in a band has changed dramatically. How you may ask? Well if you’re under 25 years old you probably wouldn’t notice. But for anyone who has been in the music biz for more than a decade or so you remember the days before YouTube, before Craigslist and before the internet.

Band member #1: “Ok, I have Van Halen I on cassette so I can bring that to practice.” Band member #2: “I can ask my brother if he’ll let me borrow his Ted Nugent albums so we can learn Stranglehold, but I don’t know … he’s kind of weird about letting me touch his

and check out the video of the band playing the song. Then if that isn’t good enough you just type the word “live” into the search bar and see hundreds of versions of the band playing the song live all over the world. Recording: Remember the days of putting tape over the top of a cassette so you could record on it, slamming it into a boom box and pressing play/record? In most cases that was how you got a “live” recording of your band. Now with the advent of pro tools, audacity and thousands of other digital recording applications, almost anyone can get a recording that is of relatively high quality. Let’s talk distribution. Back in the day it was all about getting the record deal. Every band thought that it was all a matter of getting the right record exec. to show up at their show and they would be discovered, signed, and then flown off to Europe to start their world tour. Today record deals can be great or meaningless. Any band can record their music in their basement, upload it to ITunes or CD Baby and begin to profit from their music immediately.

about as much as a new car would cost. Today you can email awesome rock and roll rags like Detroit Live and it’s possible to get covered in the mag for free. Or if you can’t wait you can place an ad that would be seen by thousands of people for less than you’d spend on a couple cases of beer. Band members: A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away if your drummer had to quit because his girlfriend smashed his kit you had to go down to the local music store and put up an ad with little pull tabs at the bottom with your mom’s home number on it because neither you or the rest of the world had cell phones. Today, simply put an ad on Craiglist.com and within a day you’ll have more musicians to choose from than you’ll probably want.

There is no debating the fact that today, with the evolution of technology, things have become much more efficient. What used to take months can be done in minutes. I have to admit that on occasion I’ll be looking for something online, either lyrics to a song or a good free recording of the song and I can’t find it and get frustrated. Then I remember what learning a song used to entail and realize I’ve come to expect miracles on demand.

Once upon a time if you wanted to publicize your shows you would simply collection.” Band member #3: “I know a guy who’s in get a magic marker and create the most awesome poster (complete with demons, my 3rd hour that says he has a bootleg of AC/DC doing Jailbreak live…I’ll swing by skulls and heaving breasteses) giving all his house and see if he’ll let me borrow it.” the pertinent info then hijack the copy machine at the city library and run off a And so on and so forth until you had a list hundred copies (hopefully the librarian would let you put some fancy colored of songs and recordings of all the songs paper in it since all the copies were in onto a cassette for each band member to black and white.) Then all you had to do learn from. But it didn’t stop there. If you wanted to get the lyrics you had to literally was drive all over town and pass them out, giving them to people walking down the sit down with the cassette or album and street. slowly listen to each word and then write it down with an actual pencil. Publicity: Back in the day you were lucky if you were playing a bar that happened to advertise on the radio. Because eventually you may hear your band’s name mentioned. Na na, na na na na, hey hey hey, goodbye. Well it sounds better when you sing it, LOL. But goodbye 2010 and hello 2011. New month, new year, new decade. One thing about the two thousand’s, they sure seem to go fast. Remember Y2K? The year 2000, everyone thought that might be and harder to find cool places to perform. the end of the world as we know it. Bob promoted his legends concert with Question Mark and the Mysterians and the Well, we are still here, still jamming, and Contours from the Dirty Dancing movie. seems like more electronics then ever. them in the column. All the guys at the end of the bar said they would give Debbie a hard time. Darian Counts mentioned in last month’s Detroit Live Magazine that we like to promote live music. The music industry is often a catch 22 in that clubs and promoters want to hire bands to draw people. Bands like to be paid to perform. Yet if no people come to see the band or the club or the concert, how much money can be made, how much can anyone be paid. Advertising and name recognition is an important part of the promotion puzzle. Contact Darian at dariancounts@detroitlivemagazine and brainstorm some promotion ideas. Buying an ad not only promotes your band or event, it helps the entertainment scene. When one band does well, it brings attention to others. Detroit Live Magazine, even this column, is one of the few places you will see, read, and learn about local Detroit bands. Spread the word. (Kid Rock is so famous now he has people who clip his name out of the papers, and twitters, just to keep tabs on what is being said about the Kid). I have a story about going back stage at the Kid Rock concert in Vegas, but we are out of time, out of space, so I’ll have to leave it in a new pile for a future column. Gunner: When I’d come off the Nugent tour, on occasion we’d go back out as TNT (Ted Nugent Tribute). It would be essentially the same band except in place of Ted Nugent we had Scott Anderson on guitar. It was a fantastic band and Scott never disappointed. Night after night people would show up expecting their favorite Nugent songs to be a certain way and every time without exception, Scott delivered. So when a guitarist spot arose in SMC I was on the phone with Scott immediately!

that could be enjoyed just as easily at any corner bar. So in 2008 when For decades 75% of the band Send Tommy and Gunner joined with Joey More Cops has been assaulting rock Gados (Weapons) and Mark Andrews and roll fans not only in Detroit but (Seduce), Send More Cops came to life. all over the world. Gunner Ross of Ted After a couple of years, as many bands Nugent/Weapons & Almighty Strut, do, SMC reached a crossroads. Joey Tommy Ingham of Mugsy and Scott and Mark decided to leave the band to Anderson of No Mercy are no strangers pursue other interests and Gunner and to the roar of a room full of thousands Tommy were faced with a decision: Do of screaming rock and roll fans. The we disband and find new projects or only difference is, this time, they are all do we buckle down and try to find the enjoying it from the stage at the same right guys? time. Scott Anderson: When Gunner called me and said he wanted me to come play Gunner Ross: I knew Tommy was the The band Send More Cops (SMC) has with his band I was pretty confident it front man I was looking for. Since I’d been decades in the making. For years would be a strong project. I’ve always first seen him perform in the 80’s I Gunner Ross had always had the image known Gunner was a Detroit Drum knew if I had a chance to perform with in his head of what he wanted as the God and for years he’d always said if he him I was going to take it. So for me perfect rock and roll singer. That image could get Tommy Ingham on lead vocals there wasn’t a question of whether or was personified in Tommy Ingham. So he could build an incredible band an not we’d continue the project. I knew when he had the opportunity to have now he had him, so I was excited to give with a front man as talented as Tommy Tommy front the band Send More Cops, it a shot. I could find the right guys to back him Gunner jumped at the chance. Tommy up. was well aware of Gunner’s reputation With three of Detroit’s most talented as one of Detroit’s most talented musicians on guitar, drums and vocals, Tommy Ingham: For me I was just drummers and knew that with the right the bar was set pretty high for a bassist. concerned that we wouldn’t be able group of guys they could put a top shelf, to reach the level of play that we arena style, rock and roll band together Who could you get to fill the shoes had achieved with Mark and Joey. Gunner on I came across the band Forest Wade, the other hand this band blew me away. For months knew right away afterward I was telling everyone I knew that guitarist that they had to check them out. The Scott Anderson lead vocalist/bassist was a young cat from No Mercy by the name of Wyatt Wade. We spoke was “The Guy”. I a bit and became friends. Eventually didn’t know Scott when an opening in SMC arose I asked but I figured if him if he’d to consider playing bass for Gunner was this SMC and he agreed to come down and sure, let’s give it jam… a shot.

The convergence: The first time we jammed was Wyatt and Scotts audition. Literally within seconds we knew that we were onto something. All my concerns about not being able to reach the same level of musicianship as in the past were replaced by flashes of what this band could be. And over the past few months we’ve grown dramatically.

of sharing the stage with some of the best guitarist in the world and Scott Anderson is among them I can’t even explain the level of excitement and energy he and Wyatt have brought to the band. The new material: Gunner Ross: Right now I’d say we are about half way thru the new album. We hope to have it ready by June and then spend the summer promoting it.

Wyatt Wade: Playing with these guys is like playing with local icons. There was really no adjustment period for me. Having seen SMC in its previous From the first four count I could feel we incarnation and being familiar with were onto something. their first album I can truly say Scott Playing with SMC is really a lot of fun and Wyatt had their work cut out for for me. To share the stage with guys them. Yet songs like Anxiety, Gimme who have this level of musicianship is Gimme haven’t taken on new life. And an honor. the new material is equally impressive.

There is a lot to be said for chemistry The old material: and this group of guys has it. It’s Tommy Ingham: The amount of talent apparent that they are really enjoying that Wyatt brought to the band was what they are doing. Their previous unexpected to me. It’s obvious that as well as their new material is he is an incredible bassist. But it’s his inspired. The energy exchanged by vocal ability that caught me off guard. His back ups are incredible. They add this incarnation of SMC is infectious. a new layer and dimension to the songs Anyone within earshot has no choice that no one expected. HOROSCOPE ARIES: Wow last year was a blast for most of our Aries friends, and it looks like 2011 will be a repeat of last year. Your key to success in 2011 is quite simple (Teamwork). Keeping people with real talent on your side and involved in your group activities will be the only challenge, this may cause some problems in the year to come. The stars say don’t be afraid to experiment with new ideas, give others a chance to prove themselves and remember Teamwork!! Rock On!!! TAURUS: Well, last year was a wild ride for most of our Taurus friends. Money came from hard work and investments. Love came and went! And family came to the rescue again. (Now a little secret about last year). Everything happens for a reason. The stars say 2011 will only be a good year if you learned a lesson of two from last year. Your key to success in the coming year is a simple one, don’t try to bullshit you way through things and stop partying like a rock star. Just be yourself, it’s what you do best! God Bless Ya!! GEMINI: Last year was OK, but could have been a better year financially for most of our twin friends. Money came and money went in 2010, by the way you did most of the spending whether you realize it or not. The stars say your key to success in the coming year is to curb your spending habits and stop using your credit cards for everything. Do this and next year will be a banner year for you and your business. Oh yea!!

By Eddie Cooper

LIBRA: Not a bad 2010 for our Libra friends, you managed to make ends meet and made some real deals last year (Know what I mean!!) The stars say your key to success in 2011 is staying with the same game. What worked for you last year will do the same in the coming year. Stay true to your beliefs and values and the sky is the limits for our Libra friends. Good Luck!! & God Bless!! SCORPIO: Love is in the air for most of our Scorpio friends in the coming year, if you don’t have that special someone you soon will. 2011 will bring a windfall of love and friendships to this lovable sign of the zodiac. If you’re already in love, be ready to be the center of attention from friends and family. Wow, just what the doctor ordered, and just what you need!! Right On!! SAGITAURUS: Wow! What a great year for our archer friends. 2010 was a fairly good year for this on the moved sign of the zodiac. Yes you did rub some folks the wrong way and you may not have sugar coated everything you said or did last year, but guess what you are what you are and you told people that when you met them. (Right?) The stars say your key to success in 2011 is (keeping the faith) you were on the right path last year and if you stay true to your beliefs nothing can stop you from attaining you goals in the year to come. You Rock!!

CANCER: Last year was not your best year by far in the past decade. In fact 2010 was probably your worst (but you knew already right!) The stars say your key to happiness and security is a simple one. Stop trying to impress everyone with material things, and be ready to change careers if necessary. 2011 can be a year of change if you start looking for an exit plan now and get off a sinking ship that is dragging you down. Go for it!!!

CAPRICORN: Happy Birthday to our goat friends and last year was a blast. No really, if last year was not good for you, you’re doing something wrong. You have donated a lot of time to loved ones and yes, you did deliver on all the promises you made. So guess what? It was a good year whether you realize it or not. 2011 is going to be another great year for the goat, money flows, love grows and you get to rock & roll. Hell!! What else could you ask for? Keep Rock-in!!

LEO: Our lion friends had a so-so year in 2010, not bad but not good either. The neat thing about last year was you were in the right places at the right time to meet people with your same interest. 2011 will be a year of walking the walk and talking the talk. In the spring of 2011 you may get the lucky break you have been looking for. Your key to real success in the coming months is to look for other talented Leo’s. They will be happy to jump on the bandwagon and help rock the house. Good Luck! & Rock On!!

AQUARIUS: 2010 was a so-so year for most of our water bearing friends. It seems like a lot of Aquarians were changing jobs and relocating, just to make ends meet. 2011 will be a much better year indeed. Staying focused and busy will be your key to success in the coming months. New partnerships are highlighted in early spring, and so is a new romance. The stars say luck rides with you in 2011 and you get a green light to start a new project soon. Good Luck!!

VIRGO: Our Virgo friends have worked hard the past year to keep friends and family happy, and if I may say so you have done a damn good job. In 2011 you get the recognition you deserve. New job offers are on the way, and if you’re already happy with what you’re doing. Don’t be surprised when you get a raise or a promotion for your service to others. Music is featured for 2011 and so are new group activities. You Rock!!

PISCES: 2010 was a year of making plan for most of our Pisces friends. 2011 will be the year to really make them happen. Time is on your side in the coming months, now is a great time to surround yourself with the right people to make things happen. Don’t be afraid to ask for help and money. The stars say new ideas pay off in late spring, and by summer you could hit the jackpot!! Music is featured and so is a new love, so have a good 2011 you deserve it. You Rock!!

There is a palpable buzz afoot about the fiery and energetic quartet known as Jiva. They defy categorization while embracing a fervent and ever-expanding Midwestern fan base. Perhaps that comes from their relentless touring several weeks out of the last two years through Michigan, Ohio, and even south to Nashville, Tennessee. With a new full-length album called Breathe just released this past September, things were looking up for the spirited rock group. Under the tutelage and direction of manager Ronnie “Tiny” Howell the band was poised to greater career heights until Howell took his own life in early fall 2010. Nick Behnan (guitars), Mike Nagy (bass), Michael Turner (vocals) and Jon Marcum (drums) found themselves at a personal and artistic crossroads left to pick up the pieces after such a shocking and heart wrenching blow. But they regrouped and persevered with tireless promoter/agent Mike “Chizzy” Chisholm who befriended the band and helped guide them through this difficult time. Recently Detroit Live met with the members of Jiva at the Liberty Street Brewing Company in Plymouth, Michigan to talk about the soul-drenched and sophisticated melodic sounds of the latest disc Breathe and what’s in store for 2011. Dlm: Can you update us on what you’ve been up to over the last year or so?

it would be like beating our heads against the wall. So we eventually got that together but we didn’t want to burn ourselves out. So we thought we’d strategize an appearance around our CD release at a club Luna in Royal Oak. We packed the place and had a great show. And from here on out we’re strategizing around doing specific kinds of gigs. Dlm: You’re targeting where you want to play? M.T.: Yeah. We’ve done well because we’ll play Muskegon and have a pretty packed house because we’ve focused on certain regions.

M.N.: There have been gigs that you don’t even want to be at. How can I expect, in good faith, to get other people to come out when I don’t even want to be there?

DLM: You demo a lot of material before you choose what makes the final recording? N.B.: We demo a lot of it, play it live, play it for people that we trust, you know.

M.T.: We’re looking at good venues like Luna. We’re in talks with the Majestic. If we Chizzy: These guys put on a helluva show! don’t wanna hang out at a place how can we Mike doesn’t just stand there with the bass. expect hundreds of people to come out? He gets into the audience, right in their faces! Chizzy: We’re looking at some places in Texas, with some of their summer festivals. I’m talking to some promoters down there. We’re looking at a city tour from Muskegon all through the region to Saugatuck, ending up at the Performing Arts Center there. Chicago is also a city we are looking at. We wanna do some serious travelling with these guys. They’re geeked up for this because they’ve been playing bars. We wanna play fundraisers, big festivals, huge deals that pack no less than 400 to 1000 people.

DLM: Nick, you were quoted in the detroit free press as saying your music was very “spiritual.” Can you expand on that? N.B.: For me my music has been my life. That’s all I’ve been doing. I also teach guitar as well. Music has been my soul. That’s where I got the name from. Jiva means “living soul.” That’s where I’m most comfortable.

N.B.: This is basically our second release. DLM: I know this is difficult but can we talk We had a female singer before for a little about your former manager ronnie howell while. Anywhere that there is entertainment, there is a battle being fought. This war is not going to be obvious to the average audience member, but to a musician, it is an all-toofamiliar experience. Before I talk about this war, I need to discuss who is fighting on both sides. In the entertainment world, there are two types of musicians: trained and untrained. Before everyone gets all upset with me for using those terms, let me just say that those terms mean different things to different people. “Trained” could mean anything from “classically trained” to having formal lessons and or a degree in music. “Untrained” could be interpreted as someone who is “self-taught,” has taken formal or informal lessons, someone who plays “by ear” or simply very experienced. Both are usually equally talented and have a wide variety of things to offer in a band setting. Though this is the case, both sides would probably argue, of course, that their method is better. Basically it boils down to who was taught to read music, or who can play by ear. This is the battle of “note” vs. “rote.” The term “rote” refers to “rote memorization,” which is basically where you memorize a tune by playing it over and over again. Both sides would quickly argue that their method is better when it comes to music, and can elaborate extensively as to why the other side is no good when it comes to using it in a band setting at a live performance. In my case, I learned when I was very small by “rote” and I later learned to read by “note”, so I am one of those rare folks who straddles the fence, although a lot of times I do consider myself to be in the “note” category, spending so many of my musical years in the classical world and having a music degree. I worked very hard to learn

simply a cultural difference, the band geeks vs. the burnouts. The band geeks (notes) get frustrated because the burnouts (rotes) are cooler and seem to always “get all the chicks.” As adults, the classically trained musician practices for hours every day and becomes the “starving artist,” while Bret Michaels laughs all the way to the bank. And so the battle continues.

rapping their knuckles? Maybe the British Invasion, but those guys can’t help that because art education is a totally different story over in England, where they are doing college-level music theory in fourth grade. I personally don’t care how I got here or Either way, my take on it is that the method what side of the fence I am on. Nothing is not as important as the outcome. makes me happier to hear someone in the audience come up to me and say how much Either way you look at it, having both they love my music. If I had a dollar for sides like this is a cause of many basement every time someone came up to me wishing rehearsal and onstage arguments across the they had never quit their instrument as a board. If someone is not counting correctly, child, well, you know the rest… or is playing the wrong arrangement or chord, you can quickly blame it on the So if you’re curious, next time you are “note” or the “rote,” with much of the latter out watching your favorite band, ask them going on than the former. Most of the time if they read music or if they play by ear. it’s user error and chances are someone is Chances are you’re going to get an “earful” coming to rehearsal unprepared. on that subject. But to be sure, your favorite I soon found out the hard way that I was musician has a side they are loyal to in this very wrong. Most members of a rock I personally think that a lot of the “rote” battle. And the war rages on… or cover band are usually in the “rote” category, and most possess a general dislike people get a bad rap. The “note” people in the meantime get a bad attitude. I think it’s www.myspace.com/remedydetroit if not an outright disdain for those people like me, who fall into the “note” category. This is partially due to stigma, and partially due to a snooty attitude from some folks on the “note” side of the fence thinking they are better than those who have not Warriors - Leave a footprint that will forever last in life been trained, and then getting into a band setting and not being able to function, either culturally, musically, or both. to read music and even though I don’t use that skill very much anymore, it is something that I am proud of and does serve me on occasion. Like when I am having trouble remembering a part and I am able to write it down, though I suppose you could do the same with guitar tablature…at any rate I thought I came into the cover band scene with something to be proud of.

Mr. Positive

I have personally witnessed the former and have been guilty of it myself during my learning process, so I have learned not to dismiss people with skill and talent who go around bragging, “I’ve never taken a lesson in my life,” and are able to play like crazy. These people can also have some problems with their playing involving technique, may not be able to play as well “in the pocket” due to timing issues, and they certainly can’t participate in any sort of music theory discussion, but the way I look at it is, who cares. If they can play well and their parts are learned correctly, then there is really no big deal. Without musicians who play by ear, there would be no improvisational rock pioneers like Jimi Hendrix and Eddie Van Halen. The rote musicians are seen as more artistic and passionate, and this is highly valued in live performance, whereas the classical musicians are just seen as playing the notes on the page, devoid of any emotion. What some people don’t realize is that back in the day, classical greats such as Bach and Beethoven were playing improvisations as well, they just weren’t written down. Hendrix and Mozart have more in common than you might realize.

Remember.Your mind is moving, knowing what’s right, turn on your power, be the light. Find your true reason, do what you crave, use up your gifts, you’ve nothing to save. Your time could be ending, over in a flash, create your legacy before life has passed on.

MARC RIZZO before he embarks on a solo tour to support his 3rd solo album Legionnaire (released on his own label Phlamencore Records).

DL: Hey Marc, for people who have heard of Soulfly or any of your other projects, but weren’t aware of your solo ventures, tell us about the new album. MR: It’s an all instrumental album along the lines of Satriani and Malmsteen but heavier. When we do live shows, Ill do the vocals and we do some classic metal like Slayer and Pantera so there’s something in it for everyone. DL: Being in such successful bands, what makes you want to do solo records instead of another “band” side project? Having toured all over the world with Soulfly and Cavalera Conspiracy, Marc Rizzo has established himself as one of the hardest working guitarists in heavy metal. What sets Marc apart from many is his wide range of styles, which he proudly displays on his solo albums. Detroit Live had the chance to talk with Marc while in town with Soulfly,

an entrance song for a UFC fighter?

MR: There’s always crazy stuff going on around here (Harpos) but not one that stands out. The shows here are always awesome and we always have a great time in Detroit.

MR: If I was given the opportunity I would love DL: Thanks for your time Marc, anything you to. My solo stuff would be perfect for it! want to say to your fans? DL: Any fighter in particular? MR: Thank you for coming to all the shows MR: I’m a big Muay Thai fan so I’d have to go and the support. I’ll see you on the road with my solo band, Soulfly, and Cavalera with Anderson Silva. Conspiracy DL: You’ve had the chance to share the stage You can see the full video interview @ www. with many artists. What was that “surreal” detroitlivemagazine.com moment? For more info on Marc Rizzo check out www. marcrizzo.net MR: In 2005 we were in direct support for Black Sabbath with Ozzy. It was a month long Make sure you see Marc’s solo band live Jan 11, 2011 @ The Ritz in Warren European tour and to see Ozzy back with the original members was a trip. Just getting to see them and hang out with them every night was definitely one of the highlights of my career. DL: What are your plans for 2011?

MR: I love instrumental guitar music. That’s really all I listen to and my favorite bands are all guitar driven. It’s something I always wanted to do since I was a kid, being in a heavy band and have a solo career.

MR: Ill be doing a solo tour in January, than the new Cavalera Conspiracy album comes out in March. We’ll be hitting Europe and hopefully the US with them. I also hope to do some solo dates in between. I’d like to hit some more festivals in the US as well. I’ve heard of Rock on the Range, maybe my solo band can hit it.

DL: I understand you’re a former boxer and MMA fan, have you ever thought about doing

DL: Any stories from Detroit you’d like to share?

JIVA and what happened with his passing?

M.T.: He had a real grass roots rock ‘n roll approach. That was his thing. He knew a lot of bands and had been around a lot of bars. We were out there grinding a lot and Ronnie really helped to get the Jiva name out there. N.B.: He worked constantly for us and put his heart and soul into it. He was very passionate about music. He put everything into the band and we became really good friends. M.T.: Yeah, he was a great guy. Everyone goes through stuff in life and it was very unfortunate. But what we’re gonna do now is put on a concert to celebrate his life. We want it to be a huge party. But we want to do it the right way because there are a lot of things that can get lost in translation. A lot of time has passed since he died so we want to do something for him before February. N.B.: It’s hard to figure out how to honor somebody when this happens and not have it be weird. We just put out the record right after he died. So should we dedicate the record to him and give the proceeds to his

family? But we thought it might be kinda tacky like we’re promoting our CD through him. We want to do something tasteful that shows our love for him without it becoming a circus. DLM: Just to shift gears for a moment, what is your take on the music industry, at large, and your place in it? M.N.: I think a lot of the generic stuff that’s out there right now is due to the fact that the record industry model is completely broken. Nobody is trying to develop bands or go out on the edge anymore. Everything sounds the same. M.T.: There are no risks anymore in music. And we’re taking a risk putting something out like this. You’ve gotta be true to yourself, but it’s hard now because there’s no risk and it’s all about money. DLM: That’s why i like you guys because you mix it up. You might have one song that’s kind of a ballad, with a jazzy edge and then follow that up with some crunch. N.B.: Well, we like to play music that we’d want to listen to. DLM: What kind of radio support have you gotten?
