Well it’s been two years since we launched Detroit Live Magazine and I just wanted to take a second and thank all the readers and musicians who have contributed to the success of what we lovingly refer to as DL MAG. The main purpose of launching a live music magazine in the middle of one of the worst economic climate the country has ever seen was to give the local music scene the boost it deserved and needed. Over the last two years we’ve been able to talk with some great musicians, both local and national. We’ve also been lucky enough to partner with great live music venues like All Around Bar and Rack and Roll and more recently New York New York and Nashville North 2 on the east side. This month, in addition to marking the two year anniversary of DL MAG we are proud to announce the launch of our new sister publication DETROIT LIVE EAST SIDE. Approximately a year ago we held a fact finding meeting with anyone who would be interested in sharing ideas for Detroit Live east side at that time I was very impressed with how much interest there was in creating a magazine just to focus on Detroit’s East side music scene. At the time I had intended on launching in Jan of 2010. Unfortunately, like many things in life and business it took a bit longer than we originally anticipated. But now the time has come. We look forward to giving the east side of Detroit the coverage it deserves.

local business owners to make decisions about whether they’d like to allow patrons to smoke while enjoying their favorite beverage or watching a live band in their privately owned businesses, have moved onto their next target. Michigan Democrat Marie Donagan has now proposed House Bill 5059 which proposes adding 50 cent per drink tax on each adult beverage you consume while watching your favorite band at a local venue Say good bye to cheap drinks. We will discuss this issue as well as other local and national issues that affect the lives and wallets of Michigan residents. We welcome live callers as well as guests to appear to discuss both local and national issues. We hope you’ll join us by logging onto www.detroitlivemagazine.com and click on the “the Darian Counts Show” Banner.

Thanks & see you at the show,

Also we are happy to announce the launch of The Darian Counts Show. Over the last 2 years I’ve tried to keep politics out of Detroit Live Magazine (unless it had a direct impact on live music). “The Darian Counts Show” will do a swan dive directly into the political cesspool. Starting Wednesday Oct 5th at 9 AM we will go Live. The Darian Counts show will have the flavor of the Detroit Rock and Roll scene while exploring the political philosophies that propel and affect our city and nation. One of the godfathers of Detroit Rock and Roll is the one and only Motor City mad Man Ted Nugent. For forty years Ted has been assaulting the sensitivities of not only Detroit music fans but music fans all over the world. From his days with the Amboy Dukes to the Damn Yankees and right up to the present Uncle Ted has never let the Motor City down. When Ted came to town this fall he was gracious enough to invite Detroit Lives’ M.G. Nader to capture the show on film and to answer a few questions for the his fans: 1. I’ve heard you speak of discipline being a major factor to attaining success in any field. Do you feel that you are a naturally discipline person or is it something that you constantly work on.-Both. I was raised in a hardcore disciplinary environment, but pragmatism dictated that such conscientiousness had its rewards, so I am constantly reminded of its effectiveness. 2. When you look back on your entire body of work of what are you most proud.-My children and what fine human beings they are. 3. Was there a time in your life when you questioned or doubted you the path you were on.-Never. Right over wrong has never been ambiguous. 4. You’ve been an inspiration to masses of rock and roll fans for decades. Who are some of your inspirations?-Surely the greatest artists and talents have driven all of us. Musically and showmanship wise, James Brown, Chuck Berry, Do Diddly, Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels, Jimi Hendrix and many many others. 5. Could you share your opinion on one of or all of the following? • Ground zero mosque-Certainly a legal right, but equally clear the soulless rudeness of such a decision. • Arizona vs. Obama 6 Detroit Live Magazine - Get into it!

administration-The line drawn in the sand where AZ is right and the corrupt Fedzilla wrong. • The Tea party-A beautiful reawakening of we the people shaking off the embarrassing apathy that facilitated the runaway government corruption and abuse of power. • The Obama presidency so far.-A frightening catastrophe of anti Americanism run amok. 6. What Musician(s) have had the biggest influence on you thru ought your life?-Mitch Ryder and The Detroit Wheels for their astonishing energy, tightness, soul and dynamic musical power and fiery showmanship. 7. Who are some of modern musicians you admire or enjoy? (any Detroit musicians?)-Kid Rock, Eminem, Jack White, Joe Bonamassa, Val Halla, Chile Peppers, Green Day and all things Dave Grohl. 8. If you had it all to do over is there anything you’d do different?-I would have gone hunting more in the 60s & 70s and taken Fred Bear up on his many invites. 9. Have you ever considered running for political office (Governor Nugent????) - Often.

agents and powers that be. On a festival, there are a lot of bands and we have to work around a lot of schedules. I By Ryan Lapointe guarantee we haven’t forgotten about really well so far. Any other singles to look Detroit and we will be there. forward to? JM: “Asylum,” which is the title track, and it’s about dealing with the loss of someone you care about deeply. The obvious side of it is that it drives you insane, but it’s the double meaning that “asylum” also means a place of safety. I remember when we were hearing the lyrics Dan [guitarist Dan Donegan] gave David a call just to make sure he was ok. He definitely had some demons he was dealing with, as he has on all our records. With all the great things Disturbed has achieved, we still have darkness and demons like everyone else, and David has always been able to access those. DL: What made you decide to do your first instrumental song? [The opening track “Remnants.”]

What do Metallica, Dave Matthews Band, and Disturbed have in common? The answer is a difficult one. With their fifth studio album, Asylum, Disturbed joined the other two as the only rock groups to have four consecutive albums debut at number one. Featuring tracks such as “Another Way to Die,” which deals with the destruction of the world through pollution and other man-made problems, as well as “Never Again,” which talks about the Holocaust, Asylum is an album that will leave you thinking and disturb many. I had the chance to talk with bassist John Moyer as Disturbed was hitting the road headlining the Uproar festival with Avenged Sevenfold and Stone Sour. DL: Hey, John. Let’s start off by letting you tell us about Asylum. JM: Instead of telling you that it’s our hardest or fastest record, I’m going to say it’s just a natural evolution of the band. We keep pushing ourselves musically and lyrically, and especially challenging each other internally to see what we can bring to the table. Lyrically speaking, the songs are a little more personal. David [vocalist David Draiman] has a gift for writing lyrics that are very cryptic, in which you have to dig in and find your own meaning. With Asylum, the cryptic-ness isn’t there so much. He’s very specific on what he’s talking about.

JM: Originally, “Remnants” was the beginning of “Asylum,” which in its entirety was a seven minute song. On the record, it opens with “Remnants,” then goes right into the title track, which was a seamless transition.

DL: What about the Music as a Weapon tour? JM: We were in the studio! We finished touring in July 2009 and started right away. We were in the studio over the winter and spring, and we spent the summer mastering and preparing for the release, and getting ready for Uproar. We turned Asylum out in just over a year, which is remarkable, especially after being on the road for the previous year. DL: So Music as a Weapon wasn’t intended to be yearly? JM: It would be great if it could go on without Disturbed, but currently it has to be supported by us. So we’ll have to see what happens down the road. DL: Any stories from Detroit you’d like to share?

DL: Thanks for your time, John. Anything you want to say to your fans in Detroit? JM: If you’re a Disturbed fan, you’ll really like Asylum and make sure you see us this year. This will be like no other Disturbed show you’ve ever seen!

DL: How come there’s no Detroit date for For more information go to www.disturbed1. Uproar? com and make sure you check out Disturbed live at the Fillmore on October 15. DL: “Another Way to Die” has been doing JM: It’s all [in] the control of the booking cont on pg. 11

Halflight Music The Latest release from Singer/ Songwriter Cheyenne Goff’s solo project Half light Music is an inspiring collection of hypnotic melodies. The Song “Mayday” kicks off this powerful Chuck Alkazian produced masterpiece. It’s an upbeat enticing tune that immediately gets your attention. Anyone who has ever heard Cheyenne perform is aware of the fact that he is an incredible vocalist, but this CD just reinforces the fact that he is an incredible songwriter has well. He has done an incredible job of building the perfect group of musicians to help create Half light. Cheyenne Goff (vocals), Donnie Patty (bass), Bob Cook (drums), Martin Yount (lead guitar)

JM: I love Detroit. Bands always play there in their beginnings. Do you remember the I-Rock?

DL: The Decade of Disturbed DVD DL: Mini-Harpo’s? It’s still there. accompanies Asylum. How did that come about? JM: I remember playing there in my previous band and we love playing Harpo’s. JM: It’s focusing on the last ten years of Now when we come, we play at DTE and Disturbed and even further back than have had such great times. A few years ago, that. There’s a lot of footage from even they did Ozzfest on consecutive days and I before The Sickness, and you can see was playing with Union Underground and David and the rest of the guys doing Disturbed was also on the tour. Well, I’m what Disturbed has always done. It talks an early riser and, of course, the buses all about how the band was discovered and stayed the night in the parking lot. I started how it was never something an A&R guy walking around and met up with C. J. from put together, it was all within. Of course she looks like hell, DL: Uproar Festival has the best lineup sees us, then sort of wanders into the woods so far this year. What are you looking and disappears. She obviously spent the forward to about it? night in there! JM: The lineup is very powerful. People have been waiting to see Avenged Sevenfold after their hardships and they are rocking their new single “Nightmare,” and Stone Sour never disappoints. Halestorm is real good and the singer rocks, and Hellyeah has a new album that is really good.

Otto Vector definitely has a style all their own. Heavily influenced by electronica this five piece has found a way to meld powerful vocals and melodies with the soothing and entrancing sounds of electronica. Lead Singer Renee’s vocals are woven with fantastic melodies and conjoined to a surprisingly strong guitar presence. These guys get major props for not following the masses. They have an original sound and personality that makes them stand out. This CD is a great addition to their body of work. Bob & Benny

By Benny Jet & Bob Harris

Bob Harris(Far right) with The Rolling Stones “I love rock and roll, so put another dime in the jukebox, baby.” Some readers will recognize that as a Joan Jett song. No relation to yours truly, Benny Jet, but that song is an old Detroit song. Back in the day, bluesman John Lee Hooker stomped his foot and strummed his guitar, wrote, sang and made the original recording of “I Love Rock and Roll.” Good evening, ladies and gentleman, boys and girls. It’s time for another installment of the Bob and Benny Show. Or should I call it the Bob and Benny Jet Show, since Bob Harris always makes me put his name first? I am Benny, the guy with the long beard who plays guitar in the Benny and the Jets band. He is the old guy who promoted concerts, managed bands, owned teen magazines and newspapers, had his picture taken with the Rolling Stones and even wrote that book, Motor City Rock and Roll: The 1960s and 1970s. It turns out I have known Bob for close to forty years. We recently had my birthday party at the Wayne Road Pub in Westland. Bob surprised me with some great photos of me over the years. A picture of me in the leather jacket days, one next to the old ‘55 Chevy, and another of me in England walking across Abbey Road like the Beatles did. It was just a great gift and a great time. Fayleen the bartender (the girl who won the hottest bartender contest) was there, as were my friends guitarist Jose Reose, Rob, Tommy, Wendel, Adam, Thunderbowl Ed, and John T. too! Karen got me a nice card. Lorna, who hasn’t missed my birthday since we’ve known each other, was there too. Man, could that be before I had a beard? No! It couldn’t be that long ago. I do like to promote Tuesdays at the Pub. I have been playing there for twenty years and I am sure that is some kind of record. We like to do some karaoke and acoustic, open-jam kind of stuff. So, if you know some players, pass the word.

In our column, Bob and I always like to mention the live music clubs that buy the big ads! The All Around in Taylor (big bar, big dance floor, pool tables, good place). We should mention DJ’s Supply in Garden City too. My friends the George Brothers, who used to be Mitch Ryder’s band, forgot their mixer recently and DJ Supply bailed them out! Nashville North 2 in Warren (great place, live bands, some karaoke nights, just cool stuff). Marlow’s Chill and Grill in Brownstown, Wheat and Rye in Dearborn Heights, Simon’s After Dark in Allen Park, Zorrito’s Restaurant and Cantina in Livonia, Rack and Roll (great name for a great club) in Riverview, New Skool Tattoos (Bob needs a tattoo) in Brownstown, Bullfrog Bar in Redford, Machine Shop in Flint, Joe’s Prime Time Pub in Brownstown, Quit-N-Time Bar and Grill in Wyandotte (did Quit-N-Time advertise free lunch?), and Vito’s Pizza-PoolPub in Lincoln Park (another great name; pizzeria, bands, DJs, and drink specials!). Let’s mention some bands too. Sykofish (crazy name, one of Detroit’s top bands), Doop and the Inside Outlaws (from last month’s cover), Pistol Day Parade (some say the area’s number one band), Ray Street Park (big-time band for a long time), Coverband Killers, Innocent Till Dark, Highwater, Underland, the Pilz, Remedy (good stuff), Parabelle, Balls Deluxe, Shotgun Opera, Jam Samich, Plush Deathly, Nightmare (Alice Cooper tribute band), Chain Reaction, Robots in the Garden (89X), Core Effect, Critical Bill (big-time), Justine Blazer (yep), Moss Band, Shatter, Shakedown, Diamondback, Kentucky Fox, Cowboy Alan and Richard Lawson (who hangs out at Nashville North 2), Bugs Beddow, Killin’ Machine (screamin’ guitars), Bluescaster, Attracting Insanity, and Salem Witchcraft. We could list bands all day. Some names are new, some are old, but you need to know these bands. They are all part of this Detroit Live scene! If you know some bands that should be mentioned in the column (or you’re lonely and want to talk rock and roll to the old guy) call Bob at 313-399-8285. Recently, I was driving down Warren Avenue and I saw Paul Warren’s name on the sign of Mr. G’s club in Garden City. Paul is a kid I knew back in junior high school. He was known as the world’s greatest guitar player. I know everyone is the world’s greatest but, even back then, Paul was really good. Paul has done a lot in his career. He did sessions with Motown back in the day, and played on “Papa was Rollin’ Stone” for the

Temptations. He toured with Joe Cocker, Tina Turner, and Richard Marks, and he cut an LP of his own as Paul Warren and Explorer, and, for the last dozen years, he has been Rod Stewart’s guitar player. Look up Rod Stewart’s “Sailing” on YouTube. It shows Paul playing in front of a million people at an outdoor concert in Brazil with Rod Stewart at his side. Very impressive. So, it was a treat to walk into Mr. G’s and see Paul smoke a Gibson 335 guitar. Back in the day, you would often see Paul play a Les Paul or a rare Explorer guitar. Mr. G’s is a nice enough club. You kind of enter into a pub room with a bigger dining and music room in the back. Paul had a lot of friends and fans there that night. On stage, there were two guitars, a bass, drums, keys, a small P.A. and a big sound. The way rock was meant to be in Detroit. To contact Bob or Benny, or for more info, call the hotline: 313-730-1627. E-mail benejets@aol.com and go to www. bennyandthejets.com and www.myspace. com/bennyandthejets. Benny performs

on Sundays at the Fiddle Bikini bar in Wayne, Tuesdays at the Wayne Road Pub in Westland and Thursdays (with the lovely bartender Maggie) at the Redford Moose on 5 Mile. There will be a free, all-ages, outdoor concert and chili cook-off October 9, noon till dusk, with the Matto Band behind Albert’s in the Ally in Garden City.

PAPA ROACH

By Steve Wallage

Skillet comes to town backing a new album Awake and riding the success of new radio songs “Monster” and “Hero”. Skillet is sure to surprise everyone who may not be familiar with this band. With hard and heavy songs amplified by John Cooper’s vocals, those at the show will be in for a treat. With each song delivering a strong message along with a pyrotechnic blast or two, these Christian rockers bring down the house with their show. Papa Roach will also be bringing their high energy show in support of a new album, Time for Annihilation…On The Record and On The Road, consisting of 5 new studio tracks and several classic live tracks. Album after album, concert after concert, Papa Roach delivers. Certainly a band that’s been underrated but consistently creates hit song after hit song. Lead singer, Jacoby Shaddix with his powerful vocals and amazing stage presence always puts the crowd in a frenzy. These high energy shows have made Papa Roach a must see no matter where they are performing. Detroit Live Magazine had a chance to catch up with Jacoby before the tour started and asked a few questions:

of respect for each other. We talked about wanting to work on something together back last fall, and everything aligned and here we are on tour together. DLM: You guys just got back from some shows in Europe, what’s the atmosphere like there as opposed to North America? JS: Well Papa Roach has always done well in Europe. Everyone seems to go berserk for us there. We headlined the Polish Woodstock, and man there was 350,000 plus people there! It was incredible with that many people and that much energy. As far as the US, we love playing throughout the Midwest (including Detroit). The fans have always been great and we love coming back each tour.

DLM: You guys are touring in support of your new album. What’s the fan reaction been like to the new songs? JS: It’s been great! Papa Roach, who have sold over 10 million records worldwide since 2000 will team up with Christian hard rockers Skillet, who are cementing their name as a main stay rock act. Adventures of a Cover Band My Brush with Fame: Darren McCarty

After our set was through, we went over to hang out with Darren and Crew. He had a few friends with him, along with his buddy Louis. Both of them, along with their entourage, were totally into it and were an absolute riot! We had so much fun just talking with them. Things were just starting to get going at the Louis also loved our band, and he and I Hamlin Pub in Lake Orion. The crowd was talked for a while. I gave both of them Remedy T-shirts to wear. Darren was in a starting to get into it. The entire second set consisted of “Did you guys just hear what I heard?! Did all requests. The front row was filled with people singing along. It was FANTASTIC! you hear that?! Make some f*ing noise!” Then he proceeded to get on an empty mic After the second set, Darren was pretty just as my keyboard player started the song, much getting mobbed by fans. People were asking him to sign autographs and take “Don’t Stop Believing.” The entire bar their picture with him. He was really cool stood in front of Darren as he sang it with about it, and patiently took pictures with me, along with the entire audience, which was steadily growing as people began to text everyone, including my 70 year-old father in law, who is a huge sports fan. Darren all of their friends to let them know they and his entourage had just come from an had better get up to the bar. He also sang “Sweet Home Alabama.” The whole time I Alice in Chains concert (so of course we was thinking, “Wow, this guy is actually in had to play “Man in the Box”) and he had invited all the guys that were sitting behind tune.” Most people who grab my mic and him at the concert to go with him to the begin singing off the cuff are not. He had bar. Those guys were definitely on cloud a pretty cool rock n’ roll rasp to his voice, which I also noticed. Luckily, someone had nine that night, as was my band. This is the whispered to me who he was so I knew not difference between someone who claims to be famous (I meet a lot of those), and to kick him off the stage for grabbing my someone who is actually famous. They mic. I could tell from people’s reactions have a lot of fans, and they handle those also that this was someone special. fans with grace and a great attitude. I was definitely taking notes. In the third set, there were so many fans that Darren had to leave, but not before saying goodbye to everyone, especially the band. He kept saying over and over again how cool it was that we had female lead and an electric violin in the band, and was just completely fawning over the whole concept of it. That just totally made my weekend, maybe my year. Since I am a giant band geek who is not

huge into sports (although I do enjoy hockey because of all the awesome fights,) when we got home, my hubby proceeded to school me on all of Darren’s stats. Then it hit me how big of a deal it was that I actually met him, much less sang songs with him and hung out with him and his people. Darren McCarty is a Detroit hero for breaking the “curse” on the Red Wings back in the late nineties, and they went on to win all those Stanley Cups. The moment that this occurred was when McCarty beat the crap out of Claude Lemieux from the Red Wings’ rival, the Colorado Avalanche for ramming Kris Draper’s face into the wall the game before (the poor guy was eating through a straw and had to have his face rebuilt.) This is exactly why I have fallen in love with hockey, because you can watch these big bruisers exact some very satisfying REVENGE, especially when it comes to the “grind line.” Hubby is still laughing at me for not knowing this particular story, but hey, I was just a teenager who was into pretty much nothing but band, choir and dorkestra when it happened so I guess you can’t blame me. A lot of people disparage Detroit, but I just love it. Just the fact that you can walk into the bar and meet some random sports legend that will hang out with you and your band as if you are old friends is so Detroit. Look at all of the cool musicians who have come out of Detroit lately, musicians that are on top of the world right now such as Kid Rock, Eminem, and The White Stripes. Let’s not also forget the fact that it’s MOTOWN and that such legends as Bob Seger, Smokey Robinson and Stevie Wonder have come from here. People here aren’t pretentious, I know Michael Posner, who wrote the song “You think you’re cooler than me” came from here also, but that’s not the vibe I get in Detroit at all. Detroit might be down at the moment, but we are steadily rising from the ashes. If we can all follow Darren McCarty’s example and treat everyone with respect no matter who you are, then we will have come a long way, baby…

By Tiny Tim Cook

Tiny Tim Cook I’m back! Once again writing for Detroit Live Magazine, had to take a little sabbatical but now I’m refreshed and ready to go. First, thanks to Darian Counts for his continued support of the local music scene and all the bands that make this worthwhile and letting me still contribute to something I truly believe in.

Now, on to the good stuff. Summer’s over and now the bar and club scene’s can pick up again. Summer is always a slow period because of all those amazing outdoor festivals (Detroit Live Dirty Dozen, X Fest, Dally in the Alley, Arts Beats & Eats, Hoedown, Detroit Electronic Music Festival), home parties and just hanging out by the bonfire nights that make summer so amazing. Some fantastic shows are coming up too that will get you ready for the fall and winter concert seasons. First, the Detroit Live 2-Year Anniversary Blowout featuring Ray Street Park, The Pilz, Underland, Highwater, Innocent Till Dark and the recently reunited Cover Band Killers on October 2nd. Then all the kick-ass Halloween parties where bands like Jane Doe, Detroit VooDoo, Underneath It All and Banned From E.A.R.T.H. bring out their dark sides. Then before you know it it’s THE BIGGEST BAR NIGHT OF THE YEAR the night before Thanksgiving and there’s always a huge reason to go have a good time before turkey and football the next day. Speaking of which, Ray Street Park, Forest Wade and Rickett Pass are teaming up for a HUGE before Thanksgiving blowout at Rack n Roll (shameless plug) on November 24th. Plenty of great local shows to get you through the next few freezing months. I recently discovered some more new phenomenal bands. Auroras of Autumn are four young guys that are doing it right. Jake, Chris, Mitch and Pat are a cross between Fall Out Boy and The Ataris with a little

NOW THAT’S A FIRE!! Van Halen thrown in. Pudge from GBMI told me about them and they left a note that they just wanted to play so after losing said number it was found just when I needed a last minute fill-in. HOLY JEBUS!!! Sam Thomas of Rack n Roll and I have seen thousands of bands between us and were both left speechless. Their cover of Georgia Satellites “Keep Your Hands To Yourself” was the best version of it I have ever heard. They turned it into a pop-punk song of their own. Still just the thought of this band rocking out puts me in good spirits. Bands like Auroras of Autumn, Eternal Affliction, Reign, Dismember The Fallen, A.M. Revolution, Shockwave, Suburban Bloodshed and Innocent Till Dark are the very future of the Detroit rock scene. At least we know it’s in good hands. Well, it’s time to go, but a huge thank you to Rick Stafford and the guys from RSP and my amazing Mother-In-Law Laura Burns and my Brother and Sister-In-Law Dave and Lynn Strochine and the badass Nick Ball for all their help in putting together this years Detroit Music Fan Appreciation Party on Sunday, September 5th at The B.S. Ranch in Belleville. Plus thanks to Steve the Sound Guy, Underland, Purple Curtain, Mudsoc, Rickett Pass, Silent Aggression, Steve and Joey of Myth Not Man, Ken from Mindrought, Keith and Sly from Mango Pie, Darian Counts of Detroit Live and Sykofish, Olin Ezra, Karen Hubbard of Wicked Skull Entertainment. Les Zaldor Zalewski of Zaldor’s World and everyone who attended; over 650 strong. 7 kegs, many bottles of liquor, 1 amazing bottle of Apple Pie and 1 GIGANTIC BONFIRE later and it was the best one yet. Just wait until next year. Drop me a line at tinytimrocks@ yahoo.com or search for me Tiny Tim Cook on Facebook. Always remember Earth, Soul, Rock n Roll and Life Rules! Peace - Tiny

The Pilz

Bobnoxious is a high energy, in-yourface, two-fisted rock and roll band from the Great White North. These guys have been invading the U. S. on a regular basis and are making big waves. Detroit Live’s Steve Sexton and Susie Wilson got a chance to talk with Bob Reid, Jeff Bialkowski, David Wyles and Stan Fountain for a few minutes before their gig to support bar owners’ rights at a local watering hole.

Detroit’s Rock and Roll addiction show starts at 8

The only difference between the Canadian DL: So, tell us the story of and American rock scenes is we have more Bobnoxious. Rush. Jeff: Bob was in a band called SFH that toured nationally across Canada for a while. He was also in a metal band called Razor that [might be] familiar to some your fans of heavier music. He wrote a lot of songs with both of those bands, but some of it didn’t fit their format. So, out of all those songs, Bobnoxious was born. Bob: Yeah. That’s about it. Razor was on hiatus and SFH was done and I had songs left over. I was introduced to Wiley, who plays drums, through my sound man. He came over and rocked out. Then along came Jeffy, then Stan… Bobnoxious was born.

DL: As a band that straddles both the Canadian and American rock scenes, what do you consider the differences between the two? Jeff: Beer’s a lot cheaper here in the States. In all reality, there isn’t much difference. We’ve made a lot of American friends here but, after just a few minutes, the lines of “you’re American and we’re Canadian” disappear. There [are] only two types of people at a Bobnoxious show: partiers and nonpartiers. And we love both just the same. It’s just that after a few minutes, we always seem to find ourselves hanging with the partiers. Rock and roll really knows no borders.

Stan: Yeah. Don’t do it. If you’ve formed one, quit now. Get a job. There are already too many of you. It will cost you your life, your wife and at least one house.

DL: What are some of your favorite Bobnoxious songs from a writing perspective? Can you tell us about your writing technique? Wiley: “Blow.” It’s just one of those songs I find myself singing when I’m not on stage. DL: Is there anything It just has a great, recognizable melody. Bob you’d like to say to is really great at writing songs that make you your fans? want to sing along. All: Cheers, fuckers!

Jeff: I would say “Reactions” is the one, as For more information far as songwriting. It’s very well written and on Bobnoxious, visit the lyrics take a while to sink in. It’s a little bobnoxiousrocks.com bit away from the party anthems. But once you do listen to the words, it begins to grow on you.

Oct. 2nd Rack and Roll

DL: What about from a performance perspective? All: Big freakin’ Cannons! DL: What are most of your songs about? Jeff: Sex, drugs, and rock and roll? DL: Do you see that changing in the near future? Bob: Yeah. In the future, we plan to start writing about drugs, rock and roll and sex. DL: Who are some of the bands that most influenced Bobnoxious? Bob: Bobnoxious influenced Bobnoxious. DL: What is your opinion of the recently enacted smoking ban? Bob: Well you guys are a bit behind Canada as far as that goes. And from a nonsmoking perspective, it’s great. Jeff: But from a bar owner’s perspective, it’s insane. It seems about ten percent of people smoke, but as far as people who frequent bars, about fifty percent of them smoke. Bob: One difference we’ve noticed is that, in America you have to go like fifteen feet from the door to smoke. In Canada, as long as you’re outside the door, you can smoke. DL: Do you have any advice for people who want to form their own band?

Detroit Live Magazine - 15

2 YEARS OF DETRO

In spring of 2008 I found myself recently “excused” from my career at Quicken Loans and searching for a new path. It was obvious to anyone paying attention at that time that the current job market was in a freefall. There were very few good paying jobs. There was a looming feeling that there is a “new normal” coming. That this economy had some “correcting” to do and a lot of people were going to be broke for a while and I knew that if I took some random position with some company selling the widget de jour I was going to be one of them. My thought process was this. I’m going to do what I want to do.

Screw the world. If it works, fantastic. If it doesn’t and I go broke, then at least I went broke doing something I loved and the reality is that many of us have spent our whole lives going broke doing things we didn’t want to do. So that was it. I decided I was going to do exactly what I wanted to do. But what did I want to do? I’ve always been a musician and wanted to see if I could create a career that would allow me to promote the music scene. I figured if I could help musicians get publicity they could build big shows. Big shows means happy bar and venue owners as well as happy rock and roll fans. It just seemed to make sense that if we promoted Detroit’s incredible scene we could do well. After all, there was no strictly live music magazine at that time in the entire Detroit region. So any promotion is better than nothing right? In addition, this is Detroit Rock City. Home of Bob Seger, Ted Nugent, Alice Cooper, Mitch Ryder, The Rockets, Kid Rock, Eminem, Iggy Pop, The White Stripes, Sponge the whole 60’s Motown era for God’s sake. How could we not have a Live Music magazine? So I made a decision that I was going to create Detroit Live Magazine. When I first made the decision I didn’t really tell anyone I just mulled it around in my skull for a week or so. Eventually I decided to share my intentions with people to see their reaction. Surprisingly, every person I talked to was completely

supportive. No one doubted the fact that the magazine would be a success. Even though in my head it was still a foggy image of something that might be, after talking with friends, family and even a few strangers, DL MAG began to take shape.

People would ask if it was going to be an online magazine or an “e-zine”. No, I thought, the world is full of online magazines, some of them are great rock and roll resources but I felt the Detroit music scene deserved something more substantial than just another online magazine. It needed something that can be held, touched and carried. Something to look forward to every month. It needed something that fans of local music as well as musicians could say “this is our magazine”. It needed Detroit Live Magazine.

man who eventually became the top sales person for Detroit Live, Ryan Lapointe. Ryan had been in the magazine business in the past and had good contacts, access to many national acts and a desire to get back into the rock and roll business. I spoke with photographer Kathy Wyrwas regarding magazine design software and industry standards. I chased down a guy delivering real Detroit Magazine and interrogated him as to what the delivery Now that the concept was formed, there process was (he is now my delivery guy). were a few small hurdles to overcome. I called the company that prints Metro There was the whole; I’ve never made a Times, told them what my intentions magazine before, thing. I’ve never even were, and they, like everyone else, never worked at a magazine. So I had a few doubted I would be starting a magazine questions like, How to get magazines in the near future. So I Questions are good, but the right went to work. Learning software, writing questions are better. I began to seek out stories, finding others who wanted to people who may have the info I need. write and most of all selling ads. One of the first people I spoke to was a

OIT LIVE MAGAZINE Selling the invisible: Can you imagine? You’re a business owner and someone comes into your business and says I would like to talk with you about purchasing an ad in a magazine. Many business owners get approached frequently by people selling advertising of all kinds. But my pitch was different; I was selling ads in a magazine that didn’t exist. My sales pitch was framed in terms of “ it’s gonna be “ and “it will kinda look like….” I created a mock up on my home printer of what I thought looked like a cool cover of the magazine and showed that to potential advertisers. A lot of people… ok, most people said no to advertising in the first issue of Detroit Live. But some said yes. It was when that first person said “yes, I’ll buy an ad in your magazine” and I took their money in exchange for creating and printing that ad that I knew there was no turning back. While selling ads for this imaginary magazine of the future I also had to produce it. The first issue of Detroit Live Magazine took 3 months to produce. Between learning the software and selling ads it was overwhelming. I finally got it all together and sent it to the printer a week before the Oct 4th kickoff event. I was so relieved to get it to the printer. It was then I realized if it takes me 3 months to produce a magazine that comes out every month, I might have a problem. So as soon as that debut issue hit stores, I began to work in the next issue. It took 6 weeks to create. The third issue took exactly a month. Since then, I’ve been able to get them all done in a month or less. Granted the last week of the month was spent with my eyes glued to a computer screen literally 24/7. There was an instance where I sat down at the computer on Sunday Morning at

9am and didn’t get up until Monday at 11:30pm. As you can imagine working that furiously can lead to the most evil of all adversaries of the printed word… the dreaded TYPO!!!

A relevance of a typo in a magazine is directly related to the frequency of that magazine’s print. If it’s a weekly that’s fine because next week there will be another issue. But, if it’s a monthly, that typo has to linger for a whole month. I’ve had several favorite typos over the last 2 years of DL Mag. One was when in the first article of the first issue where I referred to Bon Jovi as “Bob Jovi”. But that was put into proper perspective when 3 months later I put Brandon Calhoon on the cover of the magazine. But instead of his picture I ran a picture of Elliot Moses.

beginning when there was no magazine as well as people who took the time to share with me their expertise on how to create it. There are great friends like Donna James and Susie Wilson who’ve helped in areas of proofreading and promotions. Not to mention writers like Karin Elizabeth, Tiny Tim Cook and Benny and Bob and countless others. Point being, Detroit Live Magazine represents the best of Detroit. It represents people pooling their talents and working hard towards a common goal. It represents the refusal of a community to accept that Detroit’s best days are behind us. It’s the physical manifestation and culmination of the same “I can do it” attitude that created one of the greatest cities in America. Over the last 2 years Detroit Live has come a long way. But we realize there is still far to go. In a market filled with harsh competition by well capitalized publications Detroit Live has its work cut out for it. But the same unflinching confidence that propelled this endeavor 2 years ago exists today. Except now it is enhanced by 2 great years of experience working with and learning from some of the greatest musicians in the world.

But the point is, over time, not being afraid to take a chance, not being afraid of doing it wrong in front of everyone I know in and around Detroit. Things got better. By surrounding myself with the best people I could find we created a team who every month, work hard to bring you the best possible magazine. One person who has had a great impact on the visual imagery of Detroit Live is Photographer M.G. Nader. Marc contacted me shortly after the debut of the magazine and said he was just starting his photography career and wanted to work with us. I asked him to come to a show and shoot Thank You to the musicians of the some shots. I said we’d look them over Detroit music scene, the Nationals and if they were any good we’d try who’ve taken time to talk with us, the and use some in the magazine. I was writers and staff of Detroit Live as well floored by Marc’s work and we’ve been as all the unsung heroes who work hard working together ever since. There have behind the scenes to bring you Detroit been many people who have contributed Live Magazine every month. Please and inspired this magazine. Robert Lee “Bobby” Balderrama knew what he wanted to do by the time he was nine years old when he watched and listened to his father play the accordion. He was bitten by the music bug and eventually gravitated to the guitar, influenced by the pop and rock of the ‘50s and early ‘60s. Balderrama soon became part of the lexicon of modern music himself in the early to mid-‘60s when he formed Question Mark and the Mysterians along with Frank Rodriguez (keyboards), Robert Martinez (drums), Frank Lugo (bass) and, of course, lead vocalist Question Mark. The Saginawbased band broke out of Michigan in 1966 with the garage rock anthem “96 Tears,” which was a number one smash and sold over one million copies. They followed that up with two lesser charting singles, “I Need Somebody” and “Can’t Get Enough of You Baby,” which was covered by the group Smash Mouth in the mid-‘90s. The rigors of the music business and the band’s financial problems prompted Balderrama to leave the group in 1969, while they were making plans to record an ill-fated third album. He always knew, however, that he would land on his feet and keep music at the forefront of his life. Recently, the original lineup of Question Mark and the Mysterians performed a live concert at O’Toole’s in Waterford and the reception for the band seemed as strong as ever. Balderrama is certainly appreciative of that fact, but his interests have branched out these past few years into a smoother, more instrumentallybased form of music. The Robert Lee Revue features Balderrama front and center on guitar, along with original Mysterians Rodriguez on keyboards and Martinez on drums, as well as Tom Barsheff on saxophone, Balderrama’s wife, Amy Lynn, on percussion, Jack Nash on bass, Rudolph Levario on percussion, and vocalist James Bradley at select live performances.

Robert Lee “Bobby” Balderrama

By Eric Harabadian Detroit Live recently met with Balderrama in Bay City, Michigan, where we talked about some of his early history with Question Mark and the Mysterians and the path that led to his transformation as an upand-comer in the smooth jazz field. DL: You met a lot of special people along the way in the early days of Question Mark and the Mysterians, didn’t you? BB: Tony Orlando comes to mind and I didn’t even know who he was at first. He had a hit in the late ‘50s at that time and we were doing our first album in Philadelphia for Cameo-Parkway Records. Our producer, Neil Bogart, brought him into the studio, and we became friends. I could tell he had some kind of Hispanic background. He was part Jewish and part Puerto Rican. He could speak Spanish and everything and was just a really nice guy. We had him sing on “Why Me” on our first album and became really close. DL: You also met Roy Orbison early on too, right? BB: Yeah, he was a real quiet person, but I got to know his brother really good. I used to watch him sing and was just amazed. He would be doing a sound check and I thought he sang like an angel. I often wished I could sing like that. But I wasn’t really a singer, I was a guitar player. DL: What are some shows that were really significant for you in those early days? BB: We travelled with Rick Derringer and the McCoys, Sky Saxon and the Seeds, The Outsiders, with Sonny Geraci, and we all got along really good. We run into each other nowadays and we can talk about the past and have some great memories. And Rick Derringer has always been one of my favorite guitar players. He can play jazz, blues, rock—very versatile. I wanted to be like him. DL: You did a lot of television shows with Question Mark and the Mysterians in the ‘60s too, didn’t you? BB: We did! There was American Bandstand with Dick Clark, Where the Action Is, Swingin’ Time with Robin Seymour, Upbeat in Cleveland and a lot of local TV in the various cities we would be playing. We came close to doing the Ed Sullivan Show. We were in New York City and our producer Neil Bogart told us to stay in our rooms and don’t go out. He told us the Rolling Stones had just come

out with the song “Let’s Spend the Night Together” and Ed Sullivan wanted them to change it to “Let’s Spend Some Time Together” if they were gonna appear on his show. We were on hold and Mick Jagger was deciding whether he wanted to do that or not. He agreed to do what they wanted, but I think he ended up singing the original words anyway (laughs). I don’t know if they ever did the show again, but it was our missed opportunity.

played a lot around Detroit. It was me and Frankie Rodriguez. We did some recording, but all I wanted to do was play music. At that time, I didn’t care about being a soloist or making it again. We played the Studio Lounge, the Poison Apple, Red Carpet Lounge, Shirley’s on Nine Mile—we played a lot of clubs and always stayed busy. There were so many clubs in the ‘70s that you could stay in one city and be working all the time.

DL: You were with Question Mark and the Mysterians from ’66 to ’69. What did you do after that?

DL: How much of a stretch was it to go from garage rock to the blues of the Robert Lee Band in the early 2000s to the jazz scene you’re pursuing now?

Robert Lee Review cont from pg 18 it, even though I wasn’t very good at blues. But I would take the pentatonic scale and things I learned from the blues and put it in the rock tunes I was doing. On our first album, I asked Question Mark if we could do “Stormy Monday Blues.” Years later, I started getting into the blues with my own Robert Lee Band. Blues and jazz have always been a passion. Blues I understood, jazz I didn’t. But I wanted to. In the ‘70s, George Benson came out with “This Masquerade” and it was like listening to Wes Montgomery on hyper speed. I started studying his records and solos and could play melodically and tried to stay on top of jazz. About three years ago, me and Frank Rodriguez talked about doing a smooth jazz CD. We spent two years on it and it’s called For the Love of Smooth Jazz. It’s more of a Latin jazz style, with some sambas and some Carlos Santana styles on it. Carlos is a master and one of my favorites. When we were doing blues in the Robert Lee Band, I really tried to promote it, but that’s a hard market to get into. It seems like all the rockers from the ‘60s and ‘70s think we’re too old to make it in rock ‘n’ roll, so we fall into blues. It’s a great market and guys like Larry McCray from Saginaw are doing really good in it. But it was hard for me to break into. I’ve always loved jazz, and now that I’m older, I’m gonna stick with it. I love this music with all my heart and I enjoy playing it.

DL: Where do you play with the Robert Lee Revue, and do you get a lot of crossover Question Mark and the Mysterians fans? BB: Yes, lots of our friends come out and see us play at a place in Saginaw called White’s Bar. We’ve played Sundays there. We did a thing called “Jazz on Jefferson” in Saginaw this summer, and that went really well. We sold out on all our CDs. DL: What’s on the horizon for the Robert Lee Revue? BB: We’re looking to get out there to the national public with what we’re doing. Smooth jazz has taken a hit and can be up and down like anything else. But we’re looking to play the bigger cities like Detroit, Chicago, and L. A. where this music will be a little more accepted.

PAPA ROACH Cont label that might give up pushing the band after record sales might not be so stellar after the first couple weeks. The smaller independent label knows it’s a slow and steady process. For us it takes away so much pressure. DLM: You guys are partnering with World Hunger Year (WHYHunger). How and why did you guys get involved with this organization? JS: It started back when we helped out a local organization in Sacramento called Loaves and Fishes. From there we wanted to do something on a national level. With WHY, it’s a way for us to give back to the community. It’s a way to support our veterans because they cannot get back into society properly. All the proceeds go to shelters. It’s just an amazing way to really help those in need. Jacoby promised that next time around, Papa Roach will be coming through Detroit.
