Support Businesses that Support the Local Music Scene. This Spring Detroit Live Magazine held a competition to find one band to help obtain a record deal and the recognition to pursue their dreams. The contest went incredibly well and you can read all about it in this months issue of Detroit Live magazine. But what many times goes with out noticing is the sponsors of this event. They are the ones who really make it possible. This year the 2 main sponsors of the event were Rodgers Chevrolet in Woodhaven and Biker Bobs Harley Davidson in Taylor. Angela Osborn from Rodgers Chevrolet and Chris Baxter from Biker Bobs went out of their way to help make this event a reality. When asked to support the artistic and music community most businesses simply refuse. Yet Rodgers Chevrolet and Biker Bobs eagerly embraced the opportunity. We at Detroit Live Magazine would like to thank Rodgers Chevrolet, Biker Bobs and all of the sponsors on behalf of the Detroit Live magazine and the entire artistic community. The Blow up my Band contest brought many previously unknown bands to our attention and we look forward to covering them as they strive for excellence. We look forward to partnering with local businesses for future events and are now in the process of creating the Detroit Live Magazine / Goomba Music Summer time Showcase. The DLM/GM SHOWCASE starts in July and is a series of live showcase type events where bands can be heard and seen by record industry executives and media professionals. It’s designed to give a leg up to bands who feel they get lost in the thousands of incredible bands that populate the Detroit musical landscape. Bands interested in playing a Summertime Showcase show should go to www.detroitlivemagazine.com and click the “SHOWCASE” tap at the top of the page for info. Local businesses seeking information on sponsoring a Detroit Live event please call Darian Counts at 734-775-9991 If you’re in the area please stop into Rodgers Chevrolet in Woodhaven and Biker Bobs in Taylor and tell them thank you for supporting the local music scene! (And buy a car or a motorcycle while you’re there)

Their second album Lady Luck was released in October 2001. To date, the album has sold more than 8.000 copies. Included on the album were the lead track “Ecstasy” for which a full music video was produced, a cover of the 1968 song “Love Child” by Diana Ross and the Supremes, and two remixes of the original track “Liquor Snatch” by Detroit techno DJ Sean Deason. A lot of people may know Rachael May, Broadzilla guitarist, who works in the entertainment department of one of the big daily Detroit Newspapers. You may not know the second guitarist spot was occupied by Melody Baetens (under the stage name Melody Licious). Jen Lorenski

Moshpit Nation by A.J. Meathooks

has been a raging success so far and the best is yet to come. Jen’s ambition seems to be nowhere near peaking, in fact this appears to be just the beginning. On one front, M.P.N. is establishing a strong presence in the Detroit scene getting involved with shows and bands all over the area and has launched a M.P.N. face book page for east Michigan where Detroit metal heads can stay up to date on what is going on in this area as well as other parts of the state. And someone must be paying attention because MICHIGAN METAL UNITES! now M.P.N. is working together with Live Nation for shows at St. Andrew’s hall, the Shelter and Local metal is not dead! In fact, it is alive and the Fillmore Detroit. Not too shabby for a grasskicking right here in Michigan. This is more roots, word of mouth movement started only than just a metro Detroit area trend, it’s a state three years ago all the way on the other side wide phenomenon. As anyone who has been of the state. Other ambitious undertakings in involved in the Detroit metal scene knows, the works for M.P.N. in 2013 are two three day it has traditionally been a cut-throat, every outdoor festivals featuring metal bands from band for themselves kind of atmosphere. across the state. This is dubbed the Mosh Pit Boot Camp festival runs in sync with a state wide trend that is being from September 13th through the 15th. Both driven by a grass-roots organization called of these festivals will take place at Morland’s Mosh Pit Nation and it’s founder and chief Moto-cross track in Stanton Michigan. For head banger, Jen Lorenski. She has begun a those of you who were lucky enough to attend movement connecting metal heads, musicians one of the Carnival of Chaos festivals that and venues from every region of the state and were held there, you know as well as I do that this movement is growing fast! This is exactly these two festivals have the potential to create what the metal scene in this state needs. In some of the most memorable metal moments order to put an end to the abuse suffered by of 2013! The line up for these festivals is yet bands at the hands of greedy promoters and to be announced but there are slots available, sleazy club owners and to ensure that bands so if you are interested in getting involved be are given opportunities based on talent and sure to contact MoshPitNation.com for details hard work as opposed to strictly how many about these shows as well as countless others tickets they can sell, the whole scene has to throughout the state. function as one. This is exactly what Jen and M.P.N. are accomplishing little by little and city Another interesting aspect of the M.PN. by city. phenomenon is the strong presence of women getting involved. It’s common knowledge that It started one week-end in 2011 when self the metal scene has been dominated by males proclaimed “metal junkie” Jen was trying to and the dude to chick ratio at shows has always find a metal show to go to in her area (Grand been extremely unbalanced. But according Rapids). After spending a frustrating hour of to Jen this is a new era. She says “there are her life scanning band site after band site to lots of women involved. Really strong, smart see what was going on, the idea hit her. “It was metal chicks who are organized and running hard to find out what was going on around G.R., especially for local shows but even for nationals” says Jen. “You had to be friends with the bands or know the clubs. Since I know how to build a website I just started putting all the shows in one place, MoshPitNation. com and telling everyone about it so people could come to more shows”. What started THE SOCIAL BANDITS as a simple web site focusing on the local metal scene in the Grand Rapids area ran by one person has grown to multiple sites with a much broader scope spanning from the west side of the state to the metro Detroit area as well as reaching upwards to the flint area and even further north from there. “ it has become more than I ever thought it could be” says Jen. This rapid expansion will undoubtedly continue as the Mosh Pit Nation army grows. The movement seems to be self sustaining due in part to the fact that the focus is not just centered around the bands but is equally as focused around the fans and venues without which the bands would have nowhere to play and no crowds to play in front of. The intent of M.P.N. is to unify and inform all the components of the Michigan metal scene for the betterment of all involved and in my view it 12 LIVE - DETROITLIVEMAGAZINE.COM

the business side of metal. We may not be on stage, but we are definitely not always back stage being groupies either! There is a small group of us making real things happen to bring metal music forward.” I for one am all for it! I think I speak for metal heads everywhere when I say who doesn’t want to see more metal chicks getting involved and attending shows, it’s about damn time! When asked what she would like to see happen in the future for M.P.N., Jen had this to say: “I see M.P.N. going as far as metal heads want us to go. Everything that’s happened with M.P.N. is because of the bands, venues, radio stations and people approaching us. Booking more shows is definitely in our future and I would like to see us get more involved in the Detroit scene and up north too. Cities like Cadillac, Alpena and Traverse City have metal heads and shows and we can help them too. Right now M.P.N. is a side project for me and everyone else involved. We are just starting to make money on t-shirts but will be investing that into shows. So I “ld love to be able to make M.P.N. more of a business, so it can help support a few people who spend countless hours working on it. I have some ideas on that but like I said, it’s a side project with full time hours for now.”

A unified, state wide metal scene can only serve to benefit all parties involved and a movement like this one has been a long time coming to say the least. I have been involved in every aspect of the scene here in Detroit for the last ten years and fully understand the need for a change in atmosphere. No one is working harder to make it a reality than Jen Lorenski. Her idea seems so obvious that it should have been done a long time ago but the genius of it is undeniable. If M.P.N. is able to maintain it’s momentum it wont be long before it’s connecting metal heads from state to state and even coast to coast!

TAYLOR SWIFT PAINTS DETROIT RED

Review By Julia Sikora Photos By Marc Nader

Red is the color of love, hate, anger and roses, and on the night of May 4th it was the color of Ford Field as it was taken over by the RED Tour. As the stadium lights went down, 50,000 faithful fans stood waiting to watch country/pop sensation Taylor Swift take the stage. Opening the show with “State of Grace,” the uplifting first track off of her 2012 release Red. Over the next 2 hours Swift gave her enamored audience not just a concert, but a stage show of epic proportions. Complete with dancing, fireworks, moving platforms and flashing bongo drums while drummers dropped from the ceiling on cables.

The three-song set, which also included “Ours” and “Begin Again,” was reminiscent of the younger, more vulnerable Swift that won over audiences with “Teardrops on My Guitar” in 2007. To top things off on this intimate stage she also invited her special guest Ed Sheeran to accompany her on “Every Thing Has Changed.”

This softer Swift was also visible when thanking her crowd and her openers, Brett Eldredge, Austin Mahone, and Ed Sheeran. She also made a point of turning around onstage to get a picture with her audience in the background, Swift The night’s set list consisted of most of said that it’s not every day she gets a the Red album, including its namesake chance to sing in front of 50,000 people. track “Red” and Swift’s recent singles “I Knew You Were Trouble” and “22.” My personal favorite, however, was “All Too Swift ended the night with “We Are Never Well,” which Swift accompanied on piano. WWW.FALLPREY.COM It was about four years ago that I was first made aware of the band Fall Prey. It was at the urging of previous Battle of the Bands winner Forest Wade that I check them out. I contacted them and they stopped into the Detroit live offices to talk and drop off a copy of their CD. It was immediately clear that Fall Prey is a talented band.

DETROITS BEST KEPT SECRET

Fall Prey

What first caught my attention was singer Amanda Jacobs smooth command of the lead vocals. She has a natural ability to know when to punch them, when to lay back and when to pepper the mix with a strategically placed screams and other vocal accents. More importantly all the songs on the EP had an extra quality that made them hard to forget. The hooks were strong and stuck in my head for days after listening to the recording. The recording quality was good as was the songwriting. I thought to myself all this band needs is a bit of time to write more material and spend more time onstage together. Once that’s done we could have a hell of a powerhouse on our hands. Fast forward a few years and we witness the maturation of a band that has the potential to leave quite a mark on not only the Detroit music scene but the worldwide scene as well. 18 LIVE - DETROITLIVEMAGAZINE.COM

George: We’ve had great luck with festivals. A while back at one of the festival shows, we played a set that was somewhat earlier in the day, but when we got off stage we went to our merch tent and it was overrun by Fall Prey Fans .. They cleaned us out, they bought every bit of swag we had. At that point we figured we might be doing something right… Now we just had to figure out what it was. But it was created a bit different. Usually we’ll write the music and Amanda will write the vocals afterwards. With some of this new stuff we made an effort to create a vocal melody first then write around that. It seems to have given the songs a bit more depth. You were recently signed by Goomba records; they also represent bands like Puddle of Mudd, Soil, and Pistol Day Parade. DL: Can you tell us anything about your recent meeting with them? They had listened to our music, seen our videos as well as attended the Detroit Live shows so they were surprisingly familiar with the Band. They immediately offered us a licensing

and distribution deal. They seem to be great guys who are easy to work with. We are hoping that our relationship with Goomba will help us create a long play disc and prepare for the next phase of our careers.

and we are looking forward to returning to South Bend as soon as possible.

What about touring out of Michigan? Have you guys hit the road at all?

George: Well we obviously have a lot of great shows lined up and were looking forward to them and working closely with Goomba records. Aside from that we plan do continue what we’ve done all along. Work hard, rock our asses off, play anywhere we can and write great songs….

DL: It seems as if you guys have had a fruitful first half of 2013 what are your plans for the 2nd half.

Amanda: We did a show in South bend Indiana and had fantastic results. The fans were unbelievable. We arrived early and as soon as we walked into the venue we were surprised to see about 150 people ready to rock out with us. DL thanks for taking time to talk with us… have a We were impressed but the guys form that areas great summer were surprisingly apologetic about what they considered a “small” crowd. By the time the show FP: Thanks!!! started the place was packed. It was a great show

ALL TIME LOW UNLEASHES PUNK HAVOC Review by Jonny Gesundheit Photos by Marc Nader

LIMP BIZKIT

BRINGS BACK THE ORIGINAL ERA OF NU METAL

Article By Ashley Zlatopolsky Wednesday night I witnessed one of the most energetic It began with laughter. The show started Photos By Marc Nader displays of band loyalty I had ever seen in Detroit. with a Boxing match-style intro. Center Performing in front of a sold out crowd at The Fillmore stage a ring announcer holding a heavy Limp Bizkit may have been under the radar weight championship belt introduced and out of the spotlight over the past few years the band; “Weighing in below Macaulay Caulkin in Home Alone 2...with crooked genitalia; Alex Gaskarth!” Walking to the microphone, Alex smiled as he welcomed the screams and chuckles of all the diehard fans that packed The Fillmore. After each member was announced and the strike of the first chord, all hell broke loose!

As they opened with ‘Lost in Stereo’ I was immediately drawn into the fury; packed tightly between jumping teens with their hands in the air screaming every lyric, out of nowhere “BOOM” a crowd surfer nails me in the jaw accidently as she was part of the assembly line of girls riding hands to the stage that looked like some ritual offering to the punk gods from Baltimore. ATL never lost the intensity of the crowd and even had the power to control it.

All Time Low caused punk rock havoc. Right now I’m sitting at my desk still picking out confetti from my hair, flashing back to the hundreds upon hundreds of jumping teenagers reciting lyrics written years ago in some garage in Maryland. It’s been about ten years out of that garage, and All Time Low has had a decade for the history books. Having been a touring band for most of those years, I was astonished by the energy, style, and overall freshness of the performance. You can tell they love the fans and don’t intend on slowing down any time soon.

During crowd favorite, ‘If these sheets were the states’, Singer Alex demanded all cell phones be put away in order to fully enjoy and take in the song of heartbroken loneliness. It was a touching change of pace as many people were watching the show through a 3-inch phone screen. After that song, I’d say only half of the phones returned to document the remainder of this awesome hour-long pop-punk experience. The floors were wet, the mosh pits were co-ed, the temperature made a sauna seem appeasing, and the smile on my face couldn’t have been any bigger! Thank you Alex, Jack, Ryan, and Zack, For All Time Low’s passion for performance and the love for punk; you had me at an all-time high!

(besides 2011’s Gold Cobra), but the band is back in full swing for their first U.S. tour in nearly a decade. Besides festival appearances, all stops on the tour revisit intimate club-type venues that helped define the group’s dominant presence within nu metal throughout the late 90’s and early 00’s. Fans both old and young packed St. Andrew’s Hall in Detroit for a show that sold-out almost instantaneously, a city that hasn’t hosted the band since 2003’s Summer Sanitarium tour. The Detroit set list contained every major hit from the band’s earlier days (circa 1997-2000), such as “My Way”, “Nookie” and “Rollin’”. It was a complete throwback to the adolescent years for numerous attendees, who crowd surfed endlessly and generated massive circle pits on the venue’s main floor. The only track missing was Limp Bizkit’s cover of George Michael’s “Faith”, but otherwise, all of the classics were essentially nailed. Towards the end of the night, the band surprised fans with a cover of Rage Against the Machine’s “Killing in the Name”. Busting out the infamous guitar intro, Wes Borland (who dressed in the usual eccentric attire, this time with his body painted black and a LED face mask) drove the crowd insane. Fred Durst climbed onto the barricade, spitting out the opening words as concertgoers cheered loud enough to nearly drown out his voice. Limp Bizkit closed the evening with “Break Stuff”, a track that many die-hard fans waited for nearly a decade to hear live once again.

Rock On The Range Article by Ashley Zlatopolsky

Completely sold-out and receiving glowing reviews from artists and attendees alike, Rock on the Range has once again lived up to its label as the best rock festival in the country. Just when we thought 2012 couldn’t be topped, 2013’s three-day concert blew the previous out of the water. As opposed to last year’s more metal-like lineup, this year played host to a collection of bands that shaped the 90’s, mixed in with plenty of newer talent. Friday afternoon was kicked off with Mindset Evolution, Love and Death, Hollywood Undead, Buckcherry, Cheap Trick and others. Korn closed out the evening as the first headliner of the weekend, with Brian “Head” Welch rejoining the band for the first time in eight years. On Saturday, fans rocked out to Motionless in White, Bullet for my Valentine, A Day to Remember, Papa Roach, Clutch, Halestorm, Pop Evil, All That Remains, Asking Alexandria and more. Three Days Grace, once again performing with new singer Matt Walst of My Darkest Days, packed the stadium during their flame-filled set. Jason James Bullet fo rmy Valentine

Smashing Pumpkins calmed the night down following Stone Sour’s stadium-shaking show, playing classics such as “Cherub Rock”, “Ava Adore” and “Today”, along with new material from the latest album. As the final day of Rock on the Range, Sunday was saved for some of the festival’s most anticipated acts. Throughout the afternoon and early evening, bands such as Ghost, In This Moment, Steel Panther and Volbeat rocked the crowds, despite blazing heat and scorching rays. Lamb of God closed out the PBR stage as the sun began to wind down, playing to a massive pit of fans that were beyond ready for Randy Blythe’s return. Bush kicked off what seemed to be a three-part series of 90’s alternative throwbacks, dropping a cover of “Come Together” by the Beatles. Alice in Chains followed shortly, with a set list that included everything from new material such as “Stone” and older favorites such as “Would?”, “Nutshell”, “Man in the Box” and “No Excuses”. Ending the festival with a bang, Soundgarden finished off a fantastic weekend that would have made even the pickiest of rockers ecstatic to attend. Chris Cornell’s haunting vocals were put into full force, especially during “Black Hole Sun” and “Spoonman”. We’re curious to see what headliner Rock on the Range will list for 2014, as Soundgarden closing out 2013 raised the bar high.

Iggy & The Stooges, Tribute to Ron Asheton feat. Iggy & The Stooges plus special guests (DVD, MVD Visual MVD 5711D):

Taped live at Ann Arbor’s Michigan Theater in April 2011, this moving tribute to original Stooges guitarist Ron Asheton was certainly a night to remember. Asheton passed away in 2009 and the void that has been felt by band mates and fans alike came to eruptive fruition with this monumental concert. MC Henry Rollins got the festivities up and running in fine fashion barking out guest vocals on opening number “I Got a Right.” From there controlled chaos ensued courtesy of front man Iggy Pop, guitarist James Williamson, drummer Scott Asheton and bassist Mike Watt. They proceeded to barrel through hits like “Raw Power,” “Search and Destroy” and “Gimme Danger.” Iggy invites as many folks from the packed house as possible to join the band on stage for “Shake Appeal.” On “I Wanna Be Your Dog” Pop leaps into the crowd as an accompanying string and brass section wails away. On tunes like “Loose,” “Dirt” and “Real Cool Time” Radio Birdman guitarist and longtime band associate Deniz Tek sits in and offers some fiery guitar work. Perhaps the most poignant portion of the concert has to be Williamson’s dedication to their fallen comrade entitled “Ron’s Tune.” The spare and bluesy acoustic song spotlights Iggy delivering a sweet and poetic epitaph to his good friend Ron. This is Iggy and the Stooges like you’ve never seen them before. Extras include in-depth interviews with Rollins, famed director Jim Jarmusch, Deniz Tek and others.

Todd Rundgren, State (MVD Audio/ Cherry Red Records MVD 5796A):

The ever-evolving artist Todd Rundgren is back again, with another of his electronic “one man band” excursions into musical diversity, as only he can do it. “Imagination” kicks off the disc in a well constructed and energetic style, with dense sequenced rhythms and inventive and appropriately inspirational lyrics in tow. “Serious” follows and shows the master’s funky side pulling out some of his best Parliament Funkadelic-like moves. Songs like “Angry Bird” and “Collide-AScope” seem a bit contrived by audio gimmickry and repetition. But the album flow is revived in time for the sonically vivid “Smoke” and the angelic “Something from Nothing.” One never knows what to expect from this eccentric auteur and State certainly seals the deal.

Howling Diablos, Ultra Sonic Gas Can (Funky D Records): Next to Bob Seger, Kid Rock, Benny Jet and the like can you think of too many others, at least in the last decade or two, that are more fitting ambassadors of that funky Detroit sound than the Howling Diablos? It’s no secret that they’ve always been a strong live performance act. Here they have successfully captured that energy and bottled it in these grooves for mass consumption. Tino Gross is at the helm and his vocal delivery always seems to have an edge of good natured humor mixed with time-honored streetwise charm. “Mr. Right Now” is a fine example of that, mixing self-assured rap phrasing with sinewy, greasy beats. “Hook-Up” is another funkified groover that really jumps courtesy of saxophonist Johnny Evans’ precise baritone lines. That Twisted Brown Trucker influence is all

over this disc as well; from Jimmie Bones’ great organ and piano work to Uncle Kracker’s guest vocals on “Detroit on My Mind.” Other highlights include the humorous country-influenced “Too Broke to Break Up,” the ‘60s guitar twang on “Surfin’ in Detroit” and the New Orleans feel of “Funky Parade.” Nothing but solid fun from lip to label!

including digital drums, keyboards, bass and overall engineering /production. There are some jazzy moments on cuts like “Eeny Meeny” and Bo Beep” but a lot of the material sounds like it would be perfect to accompany an IMAX theater production, a sci-fi thriller or a mystery/suspense flick. Nice music for your head and for loyal fans of the master.

The Ruiners, Shake, Rattle & Moan (Funky D Records FD-101): The latest from Detroit rockers The Ruiners captures a vintage ‘70s/’80s punk approach that, while not exactly original, is solid in its own right. To witness a Ruiners show live is to experience organized bedlam at its finest. As with the Howling Diablos’ records, producer Tino Gross knows how to take a band from the stage to the studio and retain that insane energy. Just listen to lead vocalists Rick Ruiner and Nina Friday as they trade off caterwauling wails on tracks like “Eat Your Heart Out” and “Fangul to Love.” Justin Hall’s ripping guitars dominate with just the right amount of snarl and attitude. And bassist Liz Scaris and drummer Rob Moon keep the feel loose and combustible, yet locked in tight! Allan Holdsworth, FLATTire: Music for a Non-Existent Movie (Moonjune Records MJR 053): Originally recorded in 2001, this is a true solo record in the sense that, aside from a couple tracks featuring Dave Carpenter on acoustic bass, it’s Holdsworth’s baby all the way. The British guitarist began his career in the early ‘70s making a name for himself in progressive rock and jazz-fusion groups like Tempest, Soft Machine and Tony Williams’ Lifetime. Over the years he’s built a fine reputation as a guitarist’s guitarist. Not only has he been an innovator from a player’s perspective but he’s also been an inventive gear head as well. He is one of the early progenitors of melding guitars and synthesizers together. He brings that to the fore here on an instrument called the SynthAxe. Although Holdsworth has toured consistently all over the world and put out an impressive catalog of recordings he’s, apparently, always desired to compose for film. As the title suggests, the nine tracks here are his interpretations of music that could be utilized to support the visual image. A number of the tracks have a spacey, ethereal quality to them. Holdsworth plays all the parts on each track himself, DETROITLIVEMAGAZINE.COM - LIVE 25

Revolution of Rock

By Tiny Tim Cook Oh yeah I LOVE THIS SCENE!!! Just had to start it off this month with that because it is a true statement. Even though the month of May was my toughest one as a promoter yet; some of my top acts just couldn’t draw this month; but found some new music again that just might change the tide. First up was the band Jackstand. A straightforward rock band from Westland that kicked some serious ass on Memorial Day Weekend. Playing nothing but some true old-school style originals Brad, Danny, Duane and Johnny are veterans of the Detroit rock scene that you are definitely going to hear about more. Check out their demo at http://talentlivestudios.com/jack_ stand.htm. It is worth a listen. Next is Wiley Oats. Also a Memorial Day Weekend surprise. A solo acoustic performer that really blew away the crowd with his assortment of originals and covers that he definitely made his own. In the Paul Samotisstyle of tapping and playing basically using his guitar as his percussion as well is a sight to behold. Check him out at The 4th of July New Music Showcase at Simons After Dark in Allen Park on Friday July 5th.

be rocking out along with Advent of The Sun, Flatland Star, Provoke and Circle of Psychos on Saturday June 15th at Simons. Check them out at http://www.ourstage.com/profile/lkvqbanfofjj. More new stuff coming up that I can’t wait to check out this month. My Black Heart, Freddy Keys, Advent of the Sun, Charm Brigade and The Detroit Stragglers. Plus some awesome benefit shows coming up in July. The Amy Maus Fundraiser on Saturday July 13th with Sick Smile, Social Class Zero and more. Amy is the editor of Local Metro Music on Facebook that had her car stolen last month with many of her possessions inside. Then Saturday July 20th we are doing the Cox Family Fundraiser with Spittin Whiskey, Silent Aggression, Treynrek, BLACK and more. This is to help out the Cox family to help ease some costs of a recently lost loved one. Lastly on Saturday July 27th is a benefit for Detroit Dog Rescue, bands to be announced. I’m outta here, don’t forget to join me on Saturday June 22nd at Rockapalooza in Jackson as I will be celebrating my 40th birthday as well as interviewing some of the national bands playing that festival. Follow me on Twitter at @ tinytimrocks or on Facebook at facebook.com/ tinytimrocks. As always remember Earth, Soul, Rock & Roll and Life Rules!!!

Still digging Stone The Herd. Remnants of the former Brass Knuckle Karma made a mighty debut in the month of May with some awesome Earth, Soul, Rock ‘n’ Roll shows on both sides of town plus a trio of new songs playing on tapdetroit.com. They will

SUPERLAST AND CHEAPTRICK

Photos by Jim Spazoff

Last month Superlast joined Rock Legends Cheap Trick at the Sound Board. Superlast feeling honor to share the stage with the idols of their youth performed an incredible set of their latest CD. Says guitarist John Quiroz “Rick Nielsen and Robin Zander were outgoing and friendly guys. They approached us after our set to tell us they dug our stuff. It was a great experience to share the stage with a band you’ve admired for so many years, then have them tell you they like your music”

Not only did Cheap Trick enjoy the performance they invited Superlast’s lead singer Mike Azuri to join Robin Zander and the boys onstage during their show.

SPIRITUAL HOROSCOPE May 2013 by Aluna Michaels, M.A.

Gemini (May 21 – June 20) – Happy birthday Gemini! Mars, the planet of energy, excitement and enthusiasm, is in your sign. This is a two year cycle of fresh plans for self-improvement and also for walking your talk! Before you act, meditate and journal about new goals. This way you’ll use the energy wisely in well-thought out directions. You can make job changes – improve communication in relationships – and heal internal “self-talk” to be kind and supportive! Cancer (June 21 – July 22) – New energy and incredible opportunities are on the horizon! But now’s the time to prepare for that good stuff. This means meditating and forgiving stinky stuff that’s gone on the past two years. Trust that the Universe has a plan, even when things aren’t going your way. Stick with daily meditation, yoga or some type of spiritual connection. The more your let go of what’s in your head now, the more room for joy and fulfillment next month! Leo (July 23 – Aug. 22) – This month put your meditation focus on issues of mistrust and betrayal. The Universe wants you to heal old wounds related to emotional, romantic or financial disappointments. Release those memories and subsequent belief systems so you can attract positive people and circumstances, as well as abundant prosperity! Also pay close attention to your dreams for guidance and inspiration. Virgo (Aug. 23 – Sept. 22) – Neptune turns retrograde this month, so beware of confused thinking about relationships. Meditate before making big changes or grand statements. Neptune can make you not see things clearly (either overly good or overly bad), usually because the relationship is karmic. You’re feeling emotions from various dimensions of your conscious and subconscious mind which can be weird. But it’s time to have insights into patterns and issues. Don’t act yet – just meditate, write, and ponder until late July! Libra (Sept. 23 – Oct. 22) – You’ll have a major sense of your spiritual fire being re-ignited. Try new forms of yoga, meditation or other ways to connect with your soul. Also be kind to your body with food choices. Earnestly try to eliminate foods you’re allergic or addicted to. Why keep hurting yourself? It’s your spiritual step to be as kind to yourself as you are toward others! Write about comfort you get from certain foods, and meditate to seek that same comfort from spiritual sources. Let family support you since they might be having the same issues! Scorpio (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21) – Relationships are deepening. That could mean romantic partnerships, connections with kids, more intense work collaborations – or improvements in your relationship with your soul. As a Scorpio, lack of trust and fear of betrayal always underlie your hesitation to be more intimate on any level. Write and meditate about your fears. Set worry aside and enjoy the new avenues of connection the Universe is providing! Sagittarius (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21) – Resist the temptation to ignore work duties so you have more time for romantic relationships. Sure, an exciting bond is beginning, or you’re having extra fun with a long-time partner – but if you’re sloppy with work now, you’ll have lots of headaches late next month after Mercury goes direct. Set up a schedule to get job priorities out of the way, and have a trusted co-worker check for errors – then go have fun! 30 LIVE - DETROITLIVEMAGAZINE.COM

Capricorn (Dec. 22 – Jan. 19) – Practice being compassionate toward yourself. Meditate on absorbing the love from family, friends – even pets. If they love you, then you’re loveable! Treat yourself as kindly and gently as they treat you. Observe your thoughts and stop any negative self-talk! Like Libras, watch the choices you make around food and health. Be kind to your body too! As unconditional love penetrates your mind, intuition expands and you’ll feel more guided and safe. Aquarius (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18) – You could be starting a new relationship – or a current one is being rejuvenated! Meditate on improving self-worth so you can take in more of this love and joy. Focus on affirmations about your appearance and personality. It might seem goofy, but it will work to heal your subconscious that tries to sabotage you! Also, release obsessive worries about how you could mess things up or that good times don’t last! Pisces (Feb. 19 – March 20) – Neptune, your ruling planet, turns retrograde this month. It’s a testing time of balancing assertiveness with your natural co-dependency. Compassion is wonderful, but too much selflessness causes repressed anger that eventually makes you explode! Meditate each day and believe you can have strong boundaries and clear opinions without being mean or dominating. Journal about childhood situations at the root of these patterns. Ask your spouse or a good friend to help you on this new path.

Aries (March 21 – April 19) – Even though you’re energetic, Aries, maybe even restless and slightly anxious, it’s important to find a way to meditate that works for you. Try a mantra to keep your mind in motion. Or try a moving meditation like Zen walking, yoga or Tai chi. These next few months will increase your intuition if you’re attempting to connect. You’ll receive amazing insights into family, work, health and relationships – don’t miss out! Taurus (April 20 – May 20) – You’ll have a prosperous few months! You might meet new people who inspire you about work or personal empowerment. Or you could get excited about spiritual prosperity ideas. In general, it’s important not to isolate when it comes to your spiritual growth. Find people to meditate with. When others “speak your language”, you’ll be filled with hopeful possibilities for all areas of your life.
