THE LASTING LEGACY OF NOTABLE LEADERS
Key Takeaways Part of loving Michigan is understanding and appreciating the legacies of leaders who also loved Michigan. Success is not about topping what previous generations have done, but about carrying on their legacies and continuing the meaningful work they started. Lessons from these Michigan leaders emphasize the importance of a good reputation, sticking with beliefs, and thinking beyond one’s own self.

MICHIGAN’S QUADRANT LEADERS: ‘WE’RE GOING TO WORK TOG
Key Takeaways In 2021, Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey (R-16) intends to create a ballot proposal reforming the state’s legislative term limits, considered among the strictest in the country. There is considerable space to bridge before reaching an agreement about how to fund Michigan’s roads. 38
Quadrant leadership agrees to work as long as it takes to establish a good state budget.

A ROAD MAP FOR GROWTH: 2019 CONFERENCE TO-DOS A substantive tradition of the Mackinac Policy Conference, the Detroit Regional Chamber unveiled its 2019 Mackinac Policy Conference To-Do List following three days of candid conversation. To unveil this year’s list, 2019 Conference Chair Patti Poppe, president and CEO of Consumers Energy and CMS Energy, and Chamber President and CEO Sandy Baruah joined Detroit Public Television’s Christy McDonald for a live broadcast.
2019 TO-DO LIST 1
Advocate for political reforms, comparable to those identified in Michael E. Porter and Katherine M. Gehl’s research, to reinvigorate democracy and strengthen the political center.
2
Stress the importance of participation in the 2020 census.
3
Drive the enactment of meaningful distracted driving legislation.
4
Commit to support December 2019 Launch Michigan report and recommendations.
5
Ensure Michigan’s continued leadership in automotive and next-generation mobility by facilitating feedback from the industry and creating an action plan for growth.
Bipartisanship is alive and well in Michigan. Shared power is a strength in the state, and the 2019 Mackinac Policy Conference served as a platform and launchpad for dialogue and decision making across the aisle. The momentum from the island motivates action for the upcoming year, including reinvigorating democracy and the political center, an accurate census count, meaningful distracted driving legislation, holistic education reform, and continued support for the automotive industry. 41 41
