Dear Friends,
We are pleased to share the Detroit Symphony Orchestra’s 2023–2024 Annual Report. This remarkable season was filled with artistic triumphs and historic milestones from our Opening Night Gala with Yo-Yo Ma, to the continued growth of our educational programs, and community impact in Detroit and beyond.
We filled Orchestra Hall and venues across Metro Detroit with the majestic sound of our orchestra under the masterful baton of Music Director Jader Bignamini and with acclaimed guest artists. We are grateful to our series sponsors for their continued support, including PVS Chemicals, Inc., PNC Bank, and the William Davidson Foundation, who also generously presented our February 2024 Florida Tour—the DSO’s first under Jader’s leadership. The tour created profound moments of connection and engagement with DSO friends and fans in Florida, furthering our mission to provide music and access to students, families, and communities.
Back home, we were proud to be part of the reopening of the iconic Michigan Central Station, performing alongside Eminem at a sold-out concert in June, which was broadcast worldwide, highlighting our orchestra on a global scale.
Erik Rönmark President and CEO
We also celebrated the conclusion of our DSO Impact Campaign. Over the last 10 years, inclusive of the campaign and with generous investments, we have raised $110 million for the DSO’s permanent endowment, strengthening our ability to bring exceptional music and impactful programming to audiences for generations to come.
In December 2023, we celebrated another first with Jader—the recording of Wynton Marsalis’s Blues Symphony in the pristine acoustics of Orchestra Hall. We look forward to this extraordinary release in January 2025 on the Pentatone label—a true testament to the exquisite artistry of our orchestra.
As we look ahead to a bright future, we also pause to acknowledge our outstanding staff, musicians, stage crew, Board of Directors, Trustees, Governing Members, patrons, and donors. Your unwavering support ensures that we can continue to inspire and transform lives through the incredible power of music.
David T. Provost Chair, Board of Directors
The DSO made significant strides in our post-pandemic recovery, with growth across all revenue areas. However, despite this progress, we finished the 2024 season with a small operational deficit, reflecting the ongoing challenges of fully rebounding. We remain focused on strengthening our financial position in the coming year as we build on this momentum.
Over the past year, the endowment has grown by more than $3M thanks to the critical support of our generous donors. The chart below reflects the endowment’s growth over time, with the increase in permanent capital helping to fund our mission today while ensuring the organization’s future sustainability.

RECORDINGS
In late summer 2023, we celebrated a new album release on the Naxos Portara label: John Williams’s Trumpet Concerto with the DSO and Principal Trumpet Hunter Eberly under the baton of Music Director Laureate Leonard Slatkin. The album marked Eberly’s first solo recording with the DSO, and the sixth release in the DSO’s series of concertos by Williams under Slatkin.
In December, the DSO and Music Director Jader Bignamini recorded Wynton Marsalis’s Blues Symphony live in Orchestra Hall, to be released in

JADER BIGNAMINI
MUSIC DIRECTOR
MUSIC DIRECTORSHIP ENDOWED BY THE KRESGE FOUNDATION
In his third full season in the role, Music Director Jader Bignamini conducted ten programs on the PVS Classical Series with major works including Mahler’s Ninth Symphony, Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony, and the DSO premiere of Jessie Montgomery’s Snapshots. He welcomed soloists including Yo-Yo Ma, Gil Shaham, Yuja Wang, and Meghan Picerno, and led the orchestra on tour in Florida. With his contract extension, Jader will continue to serve in his role through at least the 2030–31 season.
JEFF TYZIK
PRINCIPAL POPS
CONDUCTOR
In his final season as the DSO’s beloved Principal Pops Conductor, Jeff Tyzik solidified his legacy with four programs on the PNC Pops Series: Let’s Groove Tonight: Motown & The Philly Sound, featuring the defining sounds of Detroit’s Motown classics facing off with Philly Sound hits; Red Carpet Film Scores, highlighting the most memorable scores in cinema; Country Hits: Songs from Nashville, a Nashville recording session brought to life with sounds of the Grand Ole Opry; and Back to the ‘80s, featuring superstar vocalists belting hits from one of the world’s most iconic musical decades.
TERENCE BLANCHARD
FRED A. ERB JAZZ CREATIVE DIRECTOR CHAIR
Terence Blanchard has been a consistent artistic force for making powerful musical statements concerning painful American tragedies—past and present. This season, he performed alongside jazz legend Herbie Hancock in Orchestra Hall for a once-in-a-lifetime performance of Hancock’s original compositions influenced by an innovative fusion of electric jazz, funk, and rock that continues to shape the evolution of contemporary music.
NA’ZIR MCFADDEN
ASSISTANT CONDUCTOR
PHILLIP & LAUREN FISHER COMMUNITY AMBASSADOR
In his second season with the DSO, Na’Zir McFadden conducted programs including the 2024 Classical Roots concerts, which featured soloist Steven Banks and two co-commissions from Billy Childs and Shelley Washington; Lush Life: Duke Ellington & Billy Strayhorn on the PNC Pops Series; three Young People’s
Family Concerts; and the DTE Community Concerts, powered by the DTE Foundation.
NEW ARTISTIC LEADERSHIP
Tabita Berglund Principal Guest Conductor
In February 2024, Norwegian conductor Tabita Berglund was appointed as the orchestra’s new Principal Guest Conductor, beginning in the 2024–25 season with an initial 4-year contract. Tabita is recognized as one of today’s most talented young conductors, fast gaining a reputation for her alert, charismatic, and inspiring style.
“Music has the ability, if we do it right, to reach part of the human soul that no other artform or means of communication can. I think that’s the power of music.”
— TABITA BERGLUND
Enrico
Lopez-Yañez
Principal Pops Conductor
Devereaux Family Chair
In October 2023, Enrico Lopez-Yañez was introduced as the next Principal Pops Conductor, commencing in the 2024–25 season with an initial 3-year contract. Passionate about engaging audiences of all ages and backgrounds, Enrico brings high energy, creativity, and innovation, and is known for his unique and oftentimes theatrical style of audience engagement.
“Pops means endless possibilities. We can take any genre or artist and use the orchestra to transform and elevate the music, bringing it to audiences in a way that is unique and innovative. I look forward to working with the DSO to create unsurpassed musical experiences that our audiences will love and that will bring together diverse communities.”

Orchestra tours mark moments in time—they resonate with the achievement of countless hours of study, rehearsal, and communication, and encapsulate the unique sound character of the current musicians as led by Music Director Jader Bignamini. And, as the Detroit Free Press commented on the DSO’s 2024 Florida Tour, “touring helps burnish the orchestra’s wider reputation while fortifying camaraderie among the ensemble.” Two airplanes, four tour buses, six concerts and packed houses later, we’ve carried some incredible memories back home.
In February 2024, the DSO and Music Director Jader Bignamini undertook their historic first tour together, traveling to Florida for concerts in Gainesville, Miami, West Palm Beach, Sarasota, and Vero Beach. Acclaimed American cellist Alisa Weilerstein joined the tour for performances of Edward Elgar’s Cello Concerto, with additional repertoire including Michael Abels’s Emerge, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade, and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6, “Pathétique.”
Engagement opportunities included a partnership with MorseLife Assisted Living (top right), where four DSO ensembles visited to perform for residents often unable to travel off campus. MorseLife residents, staff, and care partners heard intimate concerts and forged bonds with DSO musicians.
A commitment to nurture professional growth and preparedness for generations of classical musicians is shared by
both the DSO and Miami-based New World Symphony, leading to enriching partnerships. On tour, nine musicians headed to the NWS campus to lead mock auditions for current fellows, fostering development and connection.
The Florida Tour, the DSO’s first since traveling to Asia in 2017, highlighted the orchestra’s artistry and advocacy while deepening affinity throughout communities in Florida and strengthening bonds of supporters, musicians, and staff. The orchestra was welcomed home to Detroit with two outstanding concerts at Orchestra Hall—a fitting culmination for this remarkable tour.

“Bignamini set a frantic pace in the last movement, giving the work extra excitement before the quiet ending in which the orchestra glowed like a jewel.”

OPENING NIGHT GALA
On September 30, 2023, we celebrated our first Opening Night Gala in twenty years with a remarkable night of music featuring the DSO and one of the most acclaimed artists of our time, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, under the baton of Music Director Jader Bignamini. The sold-out concert included Dvořák’s Cello Concerto in B minor with Ma as soloist, plus
Ravel’s Suite No. 2 from Daphnis et Chloé and Glinka’s Overture to Ruslan and Ludmilla. The gala reestablished the DSO’s reputation as an organization at the pinnacle of artistic excellence, capable of attracting top talent and providing our community with unsurpassed musical experiences. See page 36 for more information.
THE CONCERT AT MICHIGAN CENTRAL STATION
Detroit history on a worldwide scale? We made it. The DSO appeared alongside Eminem for an iconic performance at the Michigan Central Station reopening concert on June 7, which also featured big names like Diana Ross, Big Sean, and Jack White. The sold-out concert streamed live globally and gained national coverage, exposing the DSO to millions as a thriving
beacon of culture in Detroit. We are honored to have been part of this tremendous tribute to our city’s enduring legacy, which we have been proud to help build since 1887. The momentum of this historic event continues to push Detroit forward, and the concert film has since been nominated for a Grammy Award.
PVS CLASSICAL SERIES
This season we highlighted 15 works by women and people of color, including new works by Jessie Montgomery and Shelley Washington as part of New Music USA’s Amplifying Voices project. We performed works by ten living composers, including two world premieres (by James Lee III and Arlene Sierra) and six DSO commissions, among them Du Yun’s Ears of the Book Pipa Concerto conducted by Eric
Jacobsen with soloist Wu Man. Other celebrated guest conductors included David Afkham, Joana Carneiro, Kevin John Edusei, Fabien Gabel, Nic McGegan, Juanjo Mena, Shiyeon Sung, and Osmo Vänskä.
SPOTLIGHT:
MUSIC AND THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT
With its power to unite, music anchored the Civil Rights Movement to freedom struggles of the past while pointing toward a more just future. In 2023–24, we harnessed music’s special power by marking the 60th anniversary of Detroit’s 1963 Walk to Freedom with opportunities for intense reflection on the relationships between music, social activism, and freedom. Programs included the world premiere of James
Lee III’s Shades of Unbroken Dreams Concerto for Piano and Orchestra conducted by Fabien Gabel with soloist Alexandra Dariescu, and Margaret Bonds’s Montgomery Variations, which honors the inspiring work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., conducted by Music Director Jader Bignamini.
2023 | 2024 ANNUAL
PNC POPS SERIES
Highlights of the PNC Pops Series included Latin Fire (with José Sibaja on trumpet and soprano Mónica Abrego) and a program with pop icon Vanessa Williams conducted by Enrico Lopez-Yañez; Go Now! The Music of the Moody Blues conducted by Michael Krajewski; Lush Life: Duke Ellington & Billy Strayhorn conducted by Na’Zir McFadden with vocalist Denzal Sinclaire; and Disney & Broadway Favorites: The Magic
of Menken with conductor Steven Reineke and featuring Broadway vocalists. The beloved Home for the Holidays program also returned with conductor Jason Seber.
SPOTLIGHT:
DISCO FEVER
We brought the party to Orchestra Hall in May with a Disco Fever program conducted by Enrico LopezYañez and featuring vocalists Maiya Sykes and B.Slade. The high-energy concerts included an onstage dance battle and disco hits like “That’s the Way (I Like It),” “It’s Raining Men,” “We Are Family,” “I Will Survive,” “Stayin’ Alive,” “The Hustle,” “Hot Stuff,” and more. To promote the concerts, we collaborated with Old Soul Vintage
for a groovy photo shoot with DSO musicians, which resulted in a social media reel with over 10k views.
PARADISE JAZZ SERIES
In its 24th season, the Paradise Jazz Series continued to honor the legacy of the Paradise Theatre, the historic Detroit jazz venue that was on the site of Orchestra Hall from 1941–1951, by showcasing diverse and engaging jazz programming from traditional to avant-garde. The series featured performances by esteemed artists
including Makaya McCraven, Endea Owens & The Cookout, Kenny Garrett, Brandford Marsalis, Don Was, Kris Johnson, and Kenny Baron.
SPOTLIGHT:
PARADISE THEATRE BIG BAND
The Paradise Theatre Big Band represents a multi-generational group of musicians who were raised in the Detroit traditions of versatility, mentorship, and innovation. A nod to Orchestra Hall’s history as the Paradise Theatre, the ensemble honors the legacy of Detroit’s Paradise Valley and Black Bottom neighborhoods that served as a beacon of Black culture from 1920–1950.
In November, Grammy Award-nominated trumpeter, composer, arranger, and DSO Civic Youth Ensembles alum Kris Johnson led the Paradise Theatre Big Band in a performance at Orchestra Hall, which included the world premiere of Johnson’s powerful musical narrative titled “Stop Apologizing for Being Human,” a journey into the essence of humanity, emotional vulnerabilities, and the strength of self-discovery.
THE CUBE AND SOSNICK COURTYARD
In the Peter D. and Julie F. Cummings Cube and our Sosnick Courtyard greenspace, audiences enjoyed boundless musical experiences and a fresh take on programming. Poetry and music returned to The Cube with BLK GOLD featuring Lulu Fall, La Shaun phoenix Moore, and spoken word artists. Other events included the Detroit City Jazz Orchestra Plus with a tribute to the Jones Brothers; Storm Large with her band, Le Bonheur, on a tour through the Great American Songbook; and a powerful Juneteenth celebration with BLKBOK.
Sosnick Courtyard was home to a free outdoor festival, made possible by the Gilbert Family Foundation. Performances featured a DSO chamber ensemble, the return of both Poetry & Music and the Urban Art Orchestra, a sensory-friendly family concert with Miss Paula and the Candy Bandits, a collaboration with Opera MODO, a Detroit techno and jazz-infused performance by composer and experience designer Nova Zaii, and a program by New Music Detroit as part of the 32nd Annual Concert of Colors festival.
SPECIAL PROGRAMMING
In June, we welcomed acclaimed actor and vocalist Tituss Burgess to perform musical selections from Broadway and film in celebration of the vibrant spectrum of identities within the LGBTQIA2S+ community. The event marked the first official Pride concert by the DSO, a tradition we intend to continue. Film concert experiences included Ghostbusters with an iconic Ectomobile on display
and additional activations in the atrium, Home Alone, and Elf. The orchestra showed their rock ’n’ roll side with Stewart Copeland: Police Deranged, tributes to Chicago and Elvis, and Beethoven x Coldplay. Other special programming included Noel Night and a once-in-a-lifetime performance with Herbie Hancock.
CIVIC YOUTH ENSEMBLES
Part of the Wu Family Academy for Learning and Engagement, the DSO’s Civic Youth Ensembles continue to cultivate every student’s artistic and creative potential through rewarding musical experiences while developing meaningful skills through the arts. The 2023–24 season saw CYE’s continued growth, serving 530 students (up from 474 in 2022–23) and 208 adults across 16 ensembles. 24 CYE students attended prominent summer programs including Interlochen Arts Camp, Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp, and the University of Michigan’s MPulse.
75% of CYE students reported feeling connected to peers in the program, fostered in part by the addition of CYE Fun Day, a student committee-led day of engaging activities, and the implementation of student-driven spaces and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion trainings for staff and mentors. In February, Principal Cello Wei Yu performed as a soloist with the Detroit Symphony Youth Orchestra (DSYO) directed by Assistant Conductor and Phillip and Lauren Fisher Community Ambassador Na’Zir McFadden.
MUSICAL TOOLBOX
How do you use music in your classroom andwhatwouldbehelpfultoyou?Through questions like these and conversations between DSO teaching artists, caregivers, and educators, the DSO’s Music Toolbox was born. Sponsored by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, the project offers creative ways for early childhood educators to bring music into their classrooms and diverse learning environments. Accompanying the project is a free series of six videos that demonstrate how to use instruments found in the box and make instruments at home. It also teaches fundamental
music concepts along with movement exercises. Together, students and educators explore themes like rhythm, sound, breath, and movement, representing a shift from traditional teaching methods and encouraging exploration, connection, and expression. In 2023–24, we distributed 543 Music Toolboxes to early childhood educators and families.
YOUNG PEOPLE’S FAMILY CONCERTS & EDUCATIONAL CONCERT SERIES
Our educational and family concerts continue to impact thousands of students in Detroit and around the world. In 2023–24, Tiny Tots concerts engaged young children in the Peter D. and Julie F. Cummings Cube, and the Young People’s Family Concert Series brought fun and interactive programs including Dr. FREAKuency’s Major Monster Bash conducted by Enrico Lopez-Yañez; Raymond Briggs’s The Snowman Film in Concert; Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf with storyteller Michael Boudewyns; and When Instruments
Roamed the Earth, an exploration of the ancient history of the instruments conducted by DSO Assistant Conductor Na’Zir McFadden.
Across three programs, including Holst’s The Planets and a celebration of Detroit music, the Educational Concert Series reached 11,938 students in Orchestra Hall and 102,000 views globally (up from last season’s 52,759) via LivefromOrchestraHall:Classroom Edition webcasts.
THE DSO AT INTERLOCHEN
The DSO returned to Interlochen in July for masterlcasses and side-by-side rehearsals and performances under the direction of Jader Bignamini. During this year’s residency, high school students participated in masterclasses with
DSO musicians and the DSO joined the World Youth Symphony Orchestra for a shared performance. The DSO also performed at Kresge Auditorium as part of the 2024 Interlochen Arts Festival.
“The Detroit Symphony Orchestra celebrates its shared history with Interlochen as national leaders in arts education, particularly in bringing the joy of music to young people in the state of Michigan for a century.”
-ERIK RÖNMARK, PRESIDENT AND CEO
LEARNING AND ENGAGEMENT
AT THE MAX
Education at the DSO is strongly rooted in listening, collaborating, and creating environments where everyone feels heard, supported, and appreciated.
Starting with early childhood, the DSO’s partnership with the PNC Foundation and Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD) includes the PNC Grow Up Great program, which offers interactive school visits with a teaching artist and support from DSO musicians. In spring 2023, the DSO welcomed all 33 Grow Up Great classrooms and over 700 pre-K students to The Max for an educational concert experience. The event marked the first time PNC Grow Up
Great educators took students outside their classrooms to hear and see the DSO in Orchestra Hall.
Our sensory-friendly events continued to empower individuals on the autism spectrum and with other sensory sensitivities to experience music in the way that feels most natural to them. Relaxed offerings included Miss Paula and the Candy Bandits in Sosnick Courtyard, the Kris Johnson Group with Mr. E, and an open rehearsal for the Peter and the Wolf family concert.
“We are most successful when we learn and grow alongside our students. Listening and responsiveness guide us in the pursuit of student well-being, superseding assumptions around age, race, gender identity, socioeconomic status, or place of residence. Our work at the DSO centers people as the experts in their own experience.”

IN THE COMMUNITY
DETROIT STRATEGY
Detroit Strategy is our commitment to expanding the DSO’s participation in the growth and well-being of Detroit. In 2023–24, we engaged in partnership with 300 organizations and held 1,177 performances, workshops, and rehearsals.
DETROIT HARMONY
Detroit Harmony provides instruments for Detroit students while fostering music education and workforce development. In 2023–24, we reached 3057 instruments received, 1083 instruments distributed, and 442 instruments repaired. In May, Detroit Harmony and more than 50 community partners presented a music education impact event for students at Greater Grace Temple.
DETROIT NEIGHBORHOOD INITIATIVE
We collaborated with local partners to present free concerts at Redeemer Presbyterian Church and St. Hedwig Catholic Church, featuring familyfriendly pre-concert activities, plus holiday and summer festival appearances in Northwest Goldberg, Chandler Park, Clark Park, and Southwest Detroit.
WILLIAM DAVIDSON NEIGHBORHOOD CONCERT SERIES
This season, the William Davidson Neighborhood Concert Series celebrated 13 years with incredible performances in seven metro Detroit communities. From January through July 2024, fans experienced the orchestra with esteemed guest conductors and soloists—including DSO musicians— in Southfield, Monroe, Beverly Hills, West Bloomfield, Plymouth, Bloomfield Hills, and Grosse Pointe. Featured artists included DSO musicians Kimberly Kaloyanides Kennedy (AssociateConcertmaster,Schwartz and Shapero Family Chair), Alexander Kinmonth (Principal Oboe, Jack A. and Aviva Robinson Chair), and Ralph Skiano (Principal Clarinet,RobertB.SempleChair), plus guests
Nicholas McGegan, Bertie Baigent, Simone Menezes, Gábor Takács-Nagy, and Stephanie Childress; conductor and violinist Dmitry Sinkovsky; pianist Jeneba Kanneh-Mason (above); violinist William Hagen; and soprano Erika Baikoff.
VISION. ACTION. IMPACT.
When we set out to grow our endowment through the DSO Impact Campaign, there was no doubt that it would require hard work and diligence to reach our goal. Over the last ten years, inclusive of the campaign and your generous investments, we have raised $110 million for DSO’s permanent endowment. Big vision and bold action were essential to our collective success and sustaining the DSO as a cultural asset within Detroit’s arts community. The energetic support
and leadership of Co-Chairs Phillip Wm. Fisher and Danny Kaufman fueled this campaign and inspired investors and the entire Impact Campaign Cabinet—setting a true example for what collaborative leadership and transformative action can achieve. The work we do to ensure music and music education are a part of daily life today and for future generations wouldn’t be possible without you.

OPENING NIGHT GALA
In September, we reinaugurated Detroit’s premier black-tie gala experience at the first Opening Night Gala since 2003. In addition to an unforgettable performance by Yo-Yo Ma and the DSO under Jader Bignamini, the illustrious evening included a red-carpet entrance with photo opportunities, cocktail reception, and a formal seated dinner. This year’s Opening Night Gala raised over $1.1 million in support of the DSO’s music and education initiatives. Thank you to the William Davidson Foundation, Linda Dresner and Ed Levy Jr., Myron P. Leven Foundation, Penny and Harold Blumenstein,
Joanne Danto and Arnold Weingarden, DTE Energy Foundation, Cynthia and Edsel Ford, Nancy and James Grosfeld, PNC Bank, Christine and David Provost, Bernadine and David Wu, Terese and Paul Zlotoff, and Lauren and Phillip Fisher.
CLASSICAL ROOTS
Classical Roots recognized Billy Childs, the Grammy Award-winning composer and jazz pianist; Shirley Stancato, a seasoned executive, prominent civic leader, race relations specialist, and social justice advocate; and jessica Care moore, the poet and founder of Black WOMEN Rock!, who received the Marlowe Stoudamire Award for Innovation and Community Collaboration, presented in memory of late Detroit community leader and Classical Roots Steering Committee member Marlowe Stoudamire. The event
raised $380,000 to support the DSO’s African American music and musician development programs. The Arthur L. Johnson – Honorable Damon Jerome Keith Classical Roots Celebration was supported by the leadership of a Classical Roots Steering Committee of Detroit community and business leaders, cochaired by Priscilla Perkins and Mable V. Jones, PhD.
The Classical Roots concerts were conducted by Na’Zir McFadden and featured saxophone soloist Steven Banks, plus co-commissioned works
by Billy Childs and Shelley Washington, supported by New Music USA’s Amplifying Voices project.

SUMMER SOIRÉE
In June, we reinvigorated Summer Soirée to support our vision to ensure all people can experience their world through music. The evening featured a concert program with two-time Grammy Award-nominated duo Black Violin, plus activations across The Max including a
cocktail and scent journey from Midtown Detroit’s Harmonic Spirits with bartender Kevin Petersen of Castalia, tasty bites, and a “Glitter and Glam” afterparty with DJ, dance floor, flashing robots, and disco-head go-go dancers. The DSO is grateful to Presenting Sponsors Carolynn and Aaron Frankel and premier sponsors Elizabeth and Renato Jamett, Christine and David Provost, Joanne Danto and Arnold Weingarden, Kari and Rob Gillette, Carola and Ric Huttenlocher, Jennette Smith Kotila and Michael Kotila, and MGM Grand Detroit.
