Deus ex Machina (god from the machine) roared into Australia’s cultural consciousness in 2006, with some neatly customised motorcycles and a quaint notion that doing something is more fun than just owning something. Deus ex Machina is a step bigger than a brand: it’s a culture. Our openness and enthusiasm strike a chord with people, wherever they are… Deus (“day-us”) didn’t set out only to sell custom parts and handbuilt motorcycles, but to celebrate a culture of creativity. The Deus philosophy recalls an era before the various pursuits of fun – motorcycling, surfing, skateboarding, whatever – were marketed into fundamentalist factions. All are welcomed under the Deus roof, where there’s simply respect for the honesty and enjoyment of the machine. Inclusiveness, authenticity, enthusiasm. It’s a simple and sincere pitch that has winged Deus ex Machina across the world. Deus ex Machina says simply there’s no ‘right way’ to do individualism, its all the same juice. Since opening the doors at the Camperdown Temple of Enthusiasm Deus has spread its own flavour of internally combustible postmodernism around the globe.

BRANDED GOODS We ride bikes, so we made some nice jackets. We surf, so we printed up our own boardshorts. We travel, so we designed luggage made to last our trips. Deus products have provenance in the pursuits of a Deus enthusiast, no over design just simple, quality products made to compliment our lives.

never going home. The Temple is the destination where the road doesn’t end. This is Bali. This is the once-quiet village called Canggu. With its winding rice-paddy back roads and a surf breaks for every appetite, this is where the Deus Temple of Enthusiasm takes root. Like some strange new tree. The Temple must be seen to be understood. There is beer on tap. There is art on walls. There are shaping bays and surfboards stacked like sets out the back. There are photo studios and Thai food fusion. Cocktails built by hand and paint spilled on the floor. Everything is fast and smooth and toes over the noes. Music in your ears and flashbulbs in your eyes. Hand-carved skateboards and fixed gear pushies. Surfboards and sushi. Movie nights and drag races. It doesn’t stop there. Get here and you’ll understand.
