Bridgeport Charter Outdoor School Presented by the Polk Soil & Water Conservation District

Tuesday May 7th - Thursday May 9th, 2013 What is Outdoor School? Outdoor School (ODS) is a 3-day 2-night environmental experience for 6th Graders in Polk County. ODS is hosted by the Polk Soil and Water Conservation District in conjunction with the school. Students, supervised by trained high school and college students, participate in 18 different “hands-on-stations”. Stations are instructed by professional natural resource presenters, covering various subjects including wildlife, aquatic insects, vegetation, map & compass, soils, forestry, and many more.

How much does it cost?

The cost is $75.00 per student. This fee covers the following: o Camp facility fee, meals, and snacks o Educational materials, field study notebook, t-shirt, crafts, etc. We want everybody to attend Outdoor School and make it as easy as possible for parents to afford to send their student. o Tuition is Due April 18, 2013 along with all forms o Refunds are not given until June 6th, 2013 o Checks/payments are paid to the school o Make checks payable to the school and include students name on check o The School accepts tuition installment payments. For example:  Pay two installments of $37.50 or  Pay five installments of $15.00  Full tuition must be paid by April 18, 2013 If you are still having trouble affording ODS, limited partial and full student scholarships are available to help. o Scholarship funds are limited, so apply as soon as possible!  Complete “Scholarship Application” included in this packet  Turn application into school o Applications will be taken up to April 11, 2013

Where is Outdoor School (ODS)?   

ODS will be held at the Canby Grove Conference Center, located near Canby, OR. 3-days and 2-nights in cabins staffed by trained high school and college counselors. All students are responsible for making their beds, cleaning their cabins, and working with their cabin group on assigned duties. o Duties include: Setting the tables in the dining hall, dining hall clean-up, garbage pick-up, and others. In case of an emergency; the Canby Grove phone number is (503) 266-5176. If staff does not answer, please be prepared to leave a detailed message. Messages are checked regularly.

Arrival & Departure:   

Students will depart from school Tuesday May 7, 2013 around 8:30 am. Students will return Thursday March 9, 2013 at approximately 2:00 PM. Parents or Guardians must provide transportation to and from school on arrival and departure dates. o Students will leave and return to the school from camp in time to ride regular buses.

Meals:

Every effort is made to provide the students with quality meals.  DO NOT SEND: Candy, soda, junk food, or money. They will have plenty to eat; we promise and there is no place to spend any money!  If your child requires a special diet, please note on the Student Health History form. ***SEND A BAG LUNCH WITH YOUR CHILD FOR TUESDAY LUNCH*** Lunch will not be provided at the camp on Tuesday We will NOT have extra lunches for your child if they forget one.

Health & Safety:

The greatest safety feature at Outdoor School is the ratio of staff member to students. A registered nurse is also on site.  The nurse, under the standing orders from the Outdoor School Physician, will dispense any over-the-counter medication authorized by the parents on enclosed form.  In case of any emergency, your child will have medical and hospital service immediately. If such an emergency should arise, you will be notified immediately by phone. o Make sure that your phone number and emergency contact numbers are current and that someone is available at that number 24 hours a day while your child is at camp. o Someone at the contact number must be available to pick up your child if necessary at all times.

Student Health History Form

In order to assist your child in having a fun, safe, and healthy time at Outdoor School, the Student Health Form must be completed and signed.  Complete ALL questions on the form. Write N/A if it does not apply to your student.  All medications must be listed on the form. Read the Medication Rules and sign.  Special Dietary needs (such as diabetic, religious, allergies, vegetarian, etc.) must be noted on form in order for the Camp to make arrangements for food substitutes when possible.  Sunscreen and bug spray will not be provided, students must bring their own  Certain situations can be embarrassing for your child, such as sleepwalking or bedwetting. With advance notice, we can help prevent this embarrassment. o If bedwetting is a potential problem, please send a spare sleeping bag with your student’s teacher.  ODS staff has taken many steps to ensure the privacy of your student. Feel free to call and discuss these arrangements.  There is additional space on the back of the form for further comments.

Shorts and sandals are NOT allowed.  If students wear them, they will be required to change immediately.

 Hairbrush  Soap • Toothbrush/toothpaste • Shower shoes (for shower ONLY) ● Sun Screen

General Equipment • Water bottle  Flashlight • Camera (Label with Name) • Large plastic bags (laundry/ponchos) • Rubber boots or an extra pair of shoes (Will need them, it’s muddy!)  1 lb. (+/-) size CLEAN butter/cottage cheese/ etc. tubs There will be no time for swimming, but students can bring a swimsuit to wear in the shower.

The above items represent a SUGGESTION for what you should bring to camp. Please do not purchase new things to satisfy all the items on the list. You can borrow from other people, or purchase used clothes, boots, raincoats, etc. from a secondhand store. Check with the Outdoor School coordinators if you have questions regarding equipment. Remember: Only pack what you can carry! 

Radios / iPods / etc. Cell Phones (There is a phone at camp if needed) Gum/ Candy POCKET KNIVES or WEAPONS of ANY KIND SHORTS or SANDALS MONEY AEROSOLS of ANY KIND ELECTRONIC ITEMS (video games, etc.) - A camera is the exception

Outdoor School Checklist: (All forms except scholarship application are DUE: Thursday, April 18, 2013)

 Filled out and turned in the required Emergency Medical Form and Authorization Form (this form). Due: April 18, 2013  Filled out the volunteer form and criminal background form from the school office Due: April 18, 2013  Filled out the scholarship application (if applicable). Funds are limited, so turn this in as soon as possible. Due: April 11, 2013  Paid Outdoor School tuition, or will pay. Make checks out to your school. Due: April 18, 2013 There will be no refunds past June 6, 2013.
