The context of Manchester has a well known heritage in textile manufacturing as it was previously known as ‘Cottonopolis’. Currently a large number of small scale textile businesses collectively make a significant contribution to the economy of Manchester’s city centre.

We were set to create a modern factory in Manchester’s city center as the local government does not recognise the value of the collective significance of this manufacturing network and their interlationship with other industries, economies within the city centre and nearby in the modern day.

INITIAL DEVELOPMENT
Programme is seperate in terms of noise. Each side feels really disconnected.
Manufacturing process has the same importance as the exhibit, Manufacturing could be part of the exhibition.
Linking them together again but with private links. Seperate public links for exhibitition and public manufacturing viewing.
Manufacturing controls left side and made easier with ASRS system and import/export occuring underground.
CONTINUUM
Sectional perspective highlighting the main journey through ‘Continuum’. The entire concept focusing on different programmes and different needs situated in one building in an urban context, in contemporary Manchester. Whilst celebrating the activity that occurs in different industries and inviting the public to view the behind the scenes as a journey. The building is made to be sustainable and adaptable to accomodate future needs.

Facade features polyethlyne suspended bricks to allow for a permeable aesthetic whilst allowing for the environmental efficiency of a double skin facade. Operable window positions allow for natural ventilation across the building, whilst the facade orientation allows for the stack effect to take place increasing windflow through the factory in order to reduce cooling loads.

One objective of my building was to create a permeable facade with materialiaty that was relatable to the site. Through this parametric script and various tests I was able to see which pattern style gave the best views and lighting. Various patterns were chose through out the building in order to reflect changes in program and continue teasing the user.
PROJECT FLYTHROUGH
A personal goal of mine is to try and incorporate more of my video editing and previous software skills with my architectural projects for a new way of showcasing finished projects. Either click the link or scan the QR code on a smartphone.

NIGHT EXTERIOR The building provides a safe passage at night through its exposed centred walkway and allows the process of creation within to be seen during the day. Along with the landscaping features on site, the building acts as a glowing safespot welcoming all and was always the intended outcome.
BANGALORE OFFICE ENVELOPE SKETCHES
BRIEF A three week technology intensive project where we were set to design a sustainable office building in Bangalore. The program was simple an multi story office situated above a public cafe. The main objectives were to create passive cooling techniques, a watertight facade to create an energy efficient building whilst still creating a pleasant working environment.
MACRO SITE ANALYSIS
Sun angles vary throughout the day, adjustable solar shaded needed.
Sun angles vary significantly, due equator location.
MICRO SITE ANALYSIS
BUILDING SERVICES
Recessed cafe allows for deep shading throughout the day.
Cross ventillation from Western prevailing wind with an open plan.
PLANS 1:200 CAFE FUTURE IMPROVEMENTS:
MID-EDGE
CORNER Corner only gets artificially or in evenings.
Easy access for backstreet deliveries + emergency egress.
Make sure service risers can be accessed from the inside and outside.
SERVING AREA
Make sure service risers dont take up majority of circulation space when accessed.
Maximum useable floor space.
Long corridor for circulation.
Large open space for cross ventillation.
Extend NW facade, recessed too much, lots of floor space gone.
CAFE
Recess NE facade for deeper natural shading.
Edges / awkward spaces made.
Initial envelope was looking at a double skin facade to create additional protection from solar gains whilst also allowing passive ventillation and hoping to add views to the outside.
FLOOR & CEILING SKETCH EDGE
Micro site analysis which looks at site access but also surrounding buildings, views and shading.
CENTRE
1:200 OFFICE
Egress + Exit possible.
Although easy access throughout, circulation paths cut through centre.
Located where least light is and no views (due to adjacadent buildings).
Most natural light around perimeter. FUTURE IMPROVEMENTS:
Large, spacious floor plan.
Blocks passive ventillation.
Uninterrupted airflow.
Warm temperature from core emitted to surroundings
Core position evaluated in different positions to see what would suit both floors the best and how this would effect environmental strategies such as lighting and cooling. As well as over all user experience.
OFFICE
Create a more linear uninterrupted pathway.
Floor build up from concrete (client specification). Incorporating space for office services as well as sound insulation between floors.

cooling)
Perforated Double skin facade on Eastern side, since prevailing wind is in West direction. West side gets enough air, and since neighbouring building on eastern side is low, morning sun can heat it up creating a thermal buffer. This alllows for the air to heat up and rise and creates pressure points for the air to go across the room and out the solar chimney.
Changes for the detail include getting rid of the raised floor for increased thermal mass. As well as the introduction of underfloor cooling via water pipes. All windows are user operable to allow for passive ventillation.
SHORT SECTION
SE ELEVATION Western side includes operable windows with solar shading. Horizontal slats along with horizontal louvers to protect against sun in evening whilst providing views to the park. This also ensures they can always leave the window open to allow for passive ventillation due to Bangalore’s high heat.
Bracket system was improvised and checked via kingspan live support system.
NW ELEVATION
Perforated double skin hasn’t been tested with sefaira analysis due to limit however shadows show they get enough diffused light (unaware of cool loads however).
