Est. €4,000 – 6,000
Est. €4,000 – 6,000 Rose Barton was born in 1865 from an Anglo-Irish background. The family lived in Rochestown, Co. Tipperary. From this country upbringing, at the age of 18, Rose was brought to Dublin, where she did the usual round of parties and attending the great ball at Dublin Castle, which was typical for a girl of her background. However this sort of life was not for Rose; in 1875 she travelled to Brussels with her mother and it was there that she started her first painting lessons. This was followed by visits to Geneva, London and Paris where Rose studied with the painter Henri Gervex. It appears it was Henri Gervex from whom Rose learnt her figure drawing. It is difficult not to mention Rose’s great friend Mildred Butler, both women from similar backgrounds, both highly talented artists but one noticeable difference in their subject matter, Mildred living in the country painting her garden and surroundings, Rose’s subject matter being almost exclusively city street scenes in Dublin, London and Paris. Rose exhibited in the Royal Academy from 1884 and was a frequent exhibiter at the Old Watercolour Society from 1893 continuing to exhibit works there for the next 30 years. Rose Barton was undoubtedly one of the greatest watercolourists of her time. Her watercolours have huge charm: capturing the morning or evening light, her figures always so well placed and drawn and her distinctly watery, blobby effect combine so brilliantly to capture the moment. Breton Girl Oil on canvas, 24” x 16” (61 x 40.5cm), signed. O’Kelly went to Paris from Dublin when he was twenty five, to further his studies as a painter. Hughie O’Donoghue b.1953
**ADDITIONAL LOT** COURSE OF THE DIVER I Oil on linen canvas, 69” x 95” (175 x 241.5cm), signed, inscribed and dated 2002 verso. Provenance: The Rubicon Gallery, Dublin where acquired by the present owner. Literature: Painting, Memory, Myth by James Hamilton, published by Merrall page 32 (Illustrated); Irish Arts Review, Summer 2003 Volume 20 No. 2 (illustrated front cover). The course of the diver series in 2002 was exhibited in Purdy Hicks Gallery, London, as well as Gallery Karl Pfefferle, Munich. For the many admirers of O'Donoghue’s work “The Course of the Diver Series” showed the artist at the height of his powers. In the catalogue entry to the Purdy Hicks Exhibition of O'Donoghue’s works entitled “Fiume” (2004) Sue Hubbard writes: “In Course of the Diver I and II, 2002, the figure transmutes into a swimmer. Amid black waters set against a backdrop of deep ochres and oranges, smudged with patches of dirty yellow suggestive of the glare and sulphurous smoke of some distant battle field, the figure swims half-submerged so that we can only guess at whether he is drowning or struggling to reach the far shore. It is these expressions of suffering, of struggle, of half-submerged memories that O’Donoghue weaves into his courageous paintings to form complex psychological maps. At once both gorgeous and lush – with their deep blues, ochres and oxblood reds, their dense blacks and their glazed surfaces – they are also, in the true Romantic sense of the word, awe inspiring. Images rise to the surface like his divers slipping through dark water, like ghosts, like photographs finding form in developing solution”.

prize pike Oil on canvas, 35½” x 24½” (90 x 62.5cm), signed & dated. Brian Fallon writes, in his book Irish Art 1880-1930, that Barrie Cooke: “has shown himself to be an exceptional colourist, both in his lush landscapes and his many female nudes. Cooke is fascinated by Irish lakes and waterways (he is a dedicated fisherman), and his passion runs through his output, from the lyrical directness of his early pictures to the large, gestural, quasi-abstract work of recent years’. ‘Prize Pike’, painted in 1959, belongs to the early paintings and is one of his finest expressions of the lyrical directness and naturalism of his early work, the subdued colours expressing the truthfulness to nature that inspired him.” Est. €5,000 – 7,000

Ballagh
b.1943
L’Origine du Langue Acrylic on canvas, 48” x 67” (112.5 x 171cm), signed with initials & dated 1990, inscribed verso. Apocryphal meetings between artistic personages recur in the work of Robert Ballagh and his friend Micheal Farrell. Ballagh, for example, had painted himself talking to Johannes Vermeer in The Conversation and painted himself into an Albrecht Dürer in his Homage to Durer. Prior to the opening of The Commons Restaurant in the early 1990s, Michael Fitzgerald commissioned a number of artists, including Ballagh, Farrell, Tony O’Malley and Louis le Brocquy to produce paintings to hang in the restaurant. They were given a theme: James Joyce and his masterpiece, Ulysses. The subject was right up Ballagh’s street in several respects. For one thing, he’d published an outstanding photographic book, Dublin, in 1981, that was not only a portrait of the city a la Ulysses, but also addressed Joyce’s Dublin, with many references to and quotations from the writer. Several years on, in 1988, he made a painting, In the Heart of the Hibernian Metropolis, in which he depicts himself strolling with Joyce in O’Connell St. He drew directly on the this work for The Commons commission, adopting the same technique of reproducing in paint the effect of a greatly enlarged vintage photograph. Rather than O’Connell St, he depicts the buildings to the east of St Stephen’s Green, with Joyce himself sitting overlooking the scene, in company not with Ballagh but with the Belgian surrealist painter René Magritte. Why Magritte? In his book of photographs, Ballagh wrote of Joyce: “…just as he transformed this Dublin into the world in microcosm, so too he charged the insignificant with significance. This ability to see something special in the simplest of things has also been my goal…” In his paintings, Magritte invests the language of everyday vision with significance, making us think about perception completely anew, just as Joyce did via the written word. In Ballagh’s painting, Magritte extends an orb – “the world in microcosm” - as a gift to the writer. Aidan Dunne, 2011 Est. €20,000 – 30,000

Man and Wife Bronze, 7” high (17.8cm), signed with initials, ed. 4/5 Provenance: Purchased May 1983, at the Paris Gallery 1900/2000, run at the time by Marcel Fleiss; Private Collection, Paris. Est. €10,000 – 15,000
McWilliam was born in Banbridge, Co. Down and went on to become Ireland’s foremost surrealist sculptor. He worked mainly in stone, wood and bronze. He studied at the Slade School of Art and his determination to become part of the international art scene brought him to London and Paris during the 1930s. He exhibited at the British Surrealists Exhibition in 1938 alongside Salvador Dali – who launched the exhibition with a lecture delivered while wearing a deep-sea diving suit. His style took much from Brancusi, Giacometti and Rodin. He was also a devotee of Picasso and Dali, who broke with the traditions of classical sculpture to produce fragmented forms in bronze and metal. 30

He received numerous important public commissions during his lifetime. A major retrospective exhibition of his work was held at the Tate Gallery in London in 1989 and in 1966 he was awarded a C.B.E in recognition of his work. In September 2008 Banbridge District Council opened a Gallery and studio dedicated to the work of McWilliam. His work is represented in many major national collections including The Tate Gallery, London and The museum of Modern Art, New York.

Rita Duffy was Born in Belfast in 1959 and received her BA at the Art and Design Centre and an MA in Fine Art at the University of Ulster. Her art is often autobiographical, including themes and images of Irish identity, history and politics. This particular work was commissioned for the exhibition "Interrogating Contested Spaces in Post-Conflict Society: Collaboration in Verbal and Visual" – Rita Duffy & Paul Muldoon. Gillespie b. 1953
IN AWE Bronze, 44” high (112cm), Ed. 6/9 Provenance: Acquired at the Rowan Gillespie Exhibition at Clonlea, held by the Solomon Gallery Rowan Gillespie was born in Dublin in 1953. His early years were spent in Cyprus, ‘The Island of Copper’ and it is here that Rowan was first introduced to the ‘lost wax’ process of bronze casting of which he has since become a master. After civil war broke out in Cyprus his family moved to England and in 1968 he attended the York School of Art. In 1970 he applied to the Kingston College of Art in London and it is here where he met and was inspired by Henry Moore. He spent a year in Oslo before completing his degree in Kingston. Rowan came to Ireland with his wife and children and settled at Clonlea in Blackrock where he was able to build his own studio, workshop and foundry. Rowan is almost unique among the bronze casting fraternity in that he works completely alone from inception to unveiling. Early commissions from the Bank of Ireland led to major international projects but perhaps his best known work is the award winning Famine Sculpture that runs along the Liffey at the Custom House (See biography by Roger Kohn 2009). Rowan has had a long association with Suzanne McDougald of the Solomon Gallery and his reputation has grown over the years to a point where he is perhaps Ireland’s most acclaimed artist of the present day. Le Brocquy HRHA
b.1916
Cherub (1953) Aubusson tapestry, 43½” x 52½” (110 x 133.5cm), signed label verso. Louis le Brocquy is perhaps best known for those works in which he engages in an internal exploration of his subject, probing the interior life of mind and body. Not surprisingly, the subtle colours and images he employs on such occasions tend to be appropriately muted. His tapestries, however, are drawn from the richer le Brocquy palette, associated with his depictions of the external world in his landscapes and still lives using the direct methods advocated by his friend and mentor, Jean Lurçat (1892-1966). Le Brocquy’s celebrated tapestries from the 1950s were woven in Aubusson by the preeminent lassier of the day, Tabard Frères & Soeurs.
(Extract from introduction to Louis Le Brocquy, Aubusson Tapestries, Taylor Galleries Dec 2000)
In 1948, Edinburgh Tapestry Weavers, an ancient industry under the patronage of the then Marquis of Bute, , invited a number of painters, working in London, to design tapestries. The artists included Stanley Spencer, Jankel Adler, Graham Sutherland and Louis le Brocquy, who later continued his work in this medium in collaboration with the Tabard workshop at Aubusson in France. His first tapestry, Travellers, was produced in 1948. In 1951, Mrs S.H Stead-Ellis, whose art collection already included leBrocquy Tapestries, commissioned three related tapestries, adaptable as screen, rug and fire screen, on the theme of the Garden of Eden, (The Eden Series) namely, “Adam & Eve in the Garden”, “Eden” and “Cherub”.

b.1927
Mother and Child Portuguese Limestone, 21” high (53.5cm), signed. Imogen Stuart was born in Berlin in 1927. She went to school in Germany, but following the outbreak of war she was evacuated and moved to Vienna and Bavaria. She first came to Ireland in 1949 on an exchange and settled here permanently in 1951, following her marriage to Irishman Ian Stuart, the grandson of Maud Gonne. “I originally designed this piece in the 1990s, carved in wood. It is based on a series I call ‘Zyklus’, which is a German word for ‘Cycle’. I have made four in this series, all in this size and all of a Mother and Child. The difference between them is the position of the young child. In this one it clings to the mother, in a tender embrace. This is carved in a Portuguese limestone and I have never in my life felt a finer stone, it feels like marble, so smooth and pure. I have the most wonderful stone carver, Phil O’Neill who carves the piece for me, under my guidance of course.” IMOGEN STUART, in conversation with Rory Guthrie

NICCOLO D’ARDIA CARACCIOLO RHA (1941-1989) The following 19 works come from the family of the artist.
Caracciolo was a landscape and portrait painter. He studied art in Florence, where he continued to live for most of his life, travelling between Italy and his home in Moate, Co Westmeath. He held numerous exhibitions in Ireland, Italy, London and America, as well as being a full member of The RHA. His last show was at The Solomon Gallery, Dublin, in 1989, a month before his tragic car accident in Tuscany, near Siena. His skill in draughtsmanship, which is so evident in the portrait studies offered here, is equally complemented by the soft warm tones of his Italian and Irish landscapes. These works are offered by his family, by descent. 200 CORNER OF THE FARMYARD, TUSCANY Watercolour, 11½” x 18” (29.5 x 46cm) Est. €600 – 900 201

Standard Conditions of Business 1. Definitions In these Conditions, de Veres Art Auctions, who act as auctioneers and agents for the vendor, are called ‘the auctioneers’ (which expression shall be deemed to include their servants and agents) and the representative of de Veres conducting the auction is called ‘The Auctioneer’. 2. Third Party Liability Every person at or on the ‘Auctioneers’ premises or at any premises being used by the Auctioneer at any time shall be deemed to be there entirely at his/her own risk and shall have no claim whatsoever against the Auctioneers or their servants or agents in respect of any accident or incident which may occur nor any injury, damage or loss howsoever arising and whether or not same is the subject of any allegation of negligence. 3. General Whilst the Auctioneers make every effort to ensure the accuracy of their catalogue and the description of any lot: (a) Each lot as set out in the catalogue or as divided or combined with any other lots or lots is sold by the vendor with all faults, imperfections and errors of description. (b) Any claim under any Statute must be received in writing by the Auctioneers within three months of the sale. (c) The Auctioneers shall not be liable for consequential or resultant loss or damage whether sustained by a Vendor or a Purchaser or the owner of any item or their respective servants and agents arising in any circumstances whatsoever and irrespective of any claim made by any party as to negligence or lack of care of the Auctioneers or any part acting on their behalf. 4. The Auction (a) The Auctioneer has absolute discretion to divide any lot, to combine any two or more lots or to withdraw any lot or lots from the sale, to refuse bids, regulate bidding or cancel the sale without in any case giving any reason or previous notice. He may bid on behalf of the vendor for all goods which are being offered subject to reserve or at the Auctioneer’s discretion. (b) The highest bidder shall be the buyer except in the case of a dispute. If during the auction the Auctioneer considers that a dispute had arisen. He has absolute discretion to settle it or to re-offer the lot. The Auctioneer may at his sole discretion determine the advance or bidding or refuse a bid. (c) Each lot is put up for sale subject to any reserve price placed by the vendor. Whether or not there is a reserve price the seller has the right to bid either personally or by any one person (who may be the Auctioneer). (d) All conditions, notices, descriptions, statements and other matters in the catalogue and elsewhere concerning any lot are subject to any statements modifying or affecting the same made by the Auctioneer from the rostrum prior to any bid being accepted for the lot. 5. Recession Notwithstanding any other terms of these Conditions, if within 12 months after the sale, the Auctioneers have received from the buyer any notice in writing that in his view the lot is a deliberate forgery and within twentyone days after such notification the buyer returns the same to the Auctioneers in the same condition as at the time of sale and by producing evidence, the burden of proof to be upon the buyer satisfies the Auctioneers that considered in the light of the entry in the catalogue the lot is a deliberate forgery, then the sale of the lot will be rescinded and the purchase price of the sale refunded. In the event of a dispute then the matter shall be settled by the President of the Institution of Chartered Surveyors in the Republic of Ireland. Both the buyer and the vendor agree to be bound by the decision . 6. Default The Auctioneers disclaim responsibility for default by - either the buyer or the vendor because they act as Agents for the vendor only and therefore do not pay out to the vendor until payment is received from the buyer. Instructions given by telephone are accepted at the sender’s risk and must be confirmed in writing forthwith. 7. In the event of a sale by private treaty both the vendor and the buyer agree to be found by these and any Special Conditions of Sale.
8. Retention of Title All goods remain the property of the vendor until paid for in full. The Auctioneers will not assume liability to discharge nett proceeds arising from the sale of goods until those goods have been paid for in full. VENDOR’S CONDITIONS 9. Instructions All goods delivered to the Auctioneers’ premises will be deemed to be delivered for sale by auction and will be catalogued and sold at the discretion of the Auctioneer and accepted by them subject to all the Sale Conditions. By delivering the goods to the Auctioneers for inclusion in their auction sales the vendor acknowledges that he or she has accepted and agreed to be bound by all these Conditions. 10. Collection and Deliveries The Auctioneers do not normally undertake the packing, collection or delivery of goods but will if requested use their best endeavors as Agent of the Owner to arrange for an independent contractor on the owner’s behalf to deal with packing, collection and/or delivery. The Auctioneer will not in any event arrange insurance of the goods and will accordingly not be liable for any loss or damage to goods howsoever arising including breakages or for any damage to premises, fixtures or fittings therein caused by such contractor or otherwise and the owner is responsive for all arrangements to verify that any such contractor and the goods is/are appropriately insured. Unless instructions are received to the contrary, charges (including VAT) for such services will be charged to the vendor’s account or discharged through the Auctioneers by the purchaser as the case may be. The Auctioneers’ liability (if any) will rise only where they themselves carry out packing and collection/delivery and only in the case of breakage or loss caused through deliberate negligence of their employees and in any event in one single contract and the Auctioneers’ liability will not exceed £500. Provided further than the Auctioneers will not be liable for consequential loss in any circumstances whatsoever. 11.
