“Fashion designer, fashion show organiser and full time work-a-holic”

By Courtney Stevens

Rita Roushdy is not a woman to be messed with, from a BTEC in Art and Design all the way through to a degree in Fashion Product an Promotion, from the University of Sunderland, this girl is going above and beyond. With her own clothing line gently progressing within the industry her first priority is ensuring her brand becomes an unforgettable domain, “My aim is to push boundaries and bend rules”, says the designer and it’s clear she’s on a mission to do so. Starting off this viral marketing sweep within her hometown of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, with intentions of branching out into the national and global markets, Rita has the largest Positive Mental Attitude I have ever encountered and it is definitive that she personifies drive and determination. “Hav-

ing stores in the UK is my starting goal for now, but I can see myself being an international fashion brand, for sure.” Not only is she penetrating the North East market but travelling back and forth to London is a sacrifice she is more than willing to make, to ensure she has sourced the best quality fabrics for her designs. Currently her Spring Summer 2013, Tulip-inspired collection, consists of three dresses and two skirts, which combine molded leather with soft lightweight fabric from China, mixing the edginess with a softer feminine aesthetic. All five of these pieces were handmade by Rita herself and so hold a very personable benefit for anyone who is presented with

the opportunity to wear one. Not only are these designs hand crafted but Rita also offers a Madeto-Order service for her Spring Summer 2013 line which has an impressive 24 hour turnaround, delivered to you within 48 hours of placing your order. Now that really is fast fashion. And where does she see the business going? “The designer dresses and skirts will be stocked in boutiques within London, and could also be purchased through high-end online stores as well as my website; which is under construction right now. I also plan on bringing out another part of the brand which will be a lot more affordable, this will consist of everyday-wear for example; T-shirts and skater summer dresses, which will be stocked in local boutiques as well as other parts of the country.” During the brands vital development period Rita has ensured that gaining exposure has been of fundamental importance and has showcased her designs at numerous fashion shows, including the AP Apparel 2013 show which was based around giving upcoming graduates and designers the platform they needed to launch themselves into the public eye. This show was essential to her brands’ success as crowds of people turned up to gain first hand views of the garments up close. Not only has she been the star of the show but also she is now in the process of launching a fashion show company, which she describes as, “an organisation that

will invite a lot of people to find out about new and upcoming designers from all over the world, and how to style the clothing showcased! I have the most talented designers in store for the upcoming fashion show in September/October time and it will showcase Spring/Summer ’14 collections. I have been searching for the perfect venue and the perfect set of team to create an unbelievable setting and atmosphere for You.” With the Spring Summer 2014 collection and fashion show is progress, this girl sure has a lot under her belt and a huge amount of potential to run with. Here at Deviant we are proud to show our support for the local, upcoming, womenswear designer. With her affordable creations continually becoming more recognizable around the streets of Newcastle, be sure to keep your eyes peeled for her designs in the areas near you. GRADUATE fashion week Did We See the Next Henry Holland?

By Fiona Catherine Whiting

DEVIANTFASHION&BEAUTY

From lifetime achievements awards to young creative minds sharing the stage at the recent gradate fashion week the talent was universally endless. Immense devotion came from all over the world when individuality and controlled creativity came together under one roof. When working on the inside of GFW the dedication the students showed and endless nights working on the collections I personally think paid off. But, did we see the next Henry Holland? As the final Gala show took place students and Industry guests combined took their positions. From observing Celebrities like Caggie Dunlop to well respected designers like Henry Holland just being in the room felt like an amazing honour. The pinnacle moment for any fashion graduate was to be decided within the hour. Even though I was only a work experience student at the event, being in the first year of fashion myself the doors that were opening for graduates were unreal. Inspirational and encouraging for a fresher like me. The prospect of working with major fashion companies and them having their own take on your debuting collection which could be sold all over the country for any graduate would be the climax of their educational success. Motivational speeches by Henry Holland and Georges Brand Director Fiona Lambert were aspirational yet grounded. The success by these two fashion icons in completely different areas from completely different backgrounds showed the graduates and students like me and other peers that anything is possible if you work for it. By looking at the 25 short listed selections from all over the UK and various countries most definitely mirrored this intention. Patterns, Textures and initiative textile creations saw that there was an infinite amount of talent coming through from British Universities as reflected by Fiona Lamberts speech when announcing the winner of the George Gold Award-‘ The calibre this year has been outstanding’. I cannot comprehend the amount of determination and imaginative thought process these students must have endured throughout their final years as

students, creating their personal path in the tough critical fashion industry that exists today. With guidance from the tutors peers and professionals the Gala evidently showed the best of the best. Seeing the amount of support the GFW team gave to all students whether it is work experience for freshers like me or the platform to showcase the students’ collections it was well appreciated by all. Although the hours of planning and organising were tiring and stressful GFW did have the extra few ‘perks’. I got to see and experience team work with experienced staff, got to see London and independently travel across the City every day. But the biggest ‘perk’ was opportunity! Opportunity to be a part of something I have dreamed of for so long. Model upon model countlessly walking by to check in made the work experience that more grounded. However, yes the models were beautiful, lean and handsome but they had nothing on the speech from model David Gandy who showed sophistication and professionalism in the way he spoke and presented himself making the ladies swoon… Standing waiting to see who I’d meet every day was exciting yet nerve wracking. The professionalism with which we were tasked in this fashion explosion meant that we dictated ourselves to the smooth running of front of house that especially meeting with industry guests, attending to their needs whoever they were. It was not only the collections you got to see every day but the variety of industry guests who walked through the GFW doors from all over the world was incredible to see. Graduate Fashion Week 2013 saw the next generation of talent which was enhanced spectacularly under much national and international media coverage which put GFW in the best light possible. Overall it was a delight and honour to work at GFW and gave me the biggest insight into a world that is inventive, explorational, and diverse. That is fashion!

Love

2013 is the Summer of By Kayleigh Armstrong

Glorious summer of 2013 is upon us and with these seasonal months of supposedly good weather and light nights comes ‘wedding fever’. June, July and August are notoriously known as the peak months for weddings – which is why for deviant’s July issue i am dedicating this to bridal beauty. Old wives were chattering saying 2013 is an unlucky year to get married but after speaking to lots of north east suppliers it appears brides have taken no notice and has been one of the biggest years for weddings yet! I will cover off how to prep the skin ready for the big day, how to DIY make up on the day and what 2013 beauty trends are sizzling for this year’s summer weddings.

12 weeks to go

Book in for your first facial; this should be the one that completely resurfaces your skin or a blemish specific facial to target problem areas.

10 weeks to go

Start using a face mask a couple times a week – again use one specific to resurfacing or exfoliating so it’s giving your skin a few weeks of renewing its cells and getting rid of the dead ones.

6 weeks to go

Another facial this time go for one that is used for balancing and moisturising – as the weeks of exfoliating can lead to dryness.

4 weeks to go

Invest in a good face cream. Ive been using Skin Doctors Gamma Hydroxy skin resurfacing face cream. It is one of the best creams i have used – and you see the difference within 3-5 days of using it. It retails about £25-£27 depending where you buy it.

2 weeks to go

Have one last facial – make this a collagen based one so it has a plumping effect and will give that baby face glow.

1 week to go

Exfoliate a couple times this week – but don’t overdo it! Try to stay clear of any new products as this is not the time of risking a reaction!

Day/Night before

Make sure you get plenty of sleep and relax – old fashioned advice but always the best – even try the old cucumbers on eye trick this will make sure you wake up sparkly eyed for your big day!

Much ‘I Do’ About Nothing So from having bought and read and studied £150.00 worth of bridal magazines for the past 12 months and having spent hours and hours of research over the internet – what has become clear is that getting a good skin care regime in place a few months before the wedding day is essential in ensuring your skin has a clear and natural glow. This is something that maybe half of brides will already have sorted and then the other half whose concern is more about the state of the table plan than the state of her skin! But please don’t under estimate the magnitude of how a fresh looking face will radiate across on the photographs. It’s pretty standard in day to day grooming rituals that you adapt a good routine but it’s never been as important than the run up to your big day. Your face is going to be the focus of everyone in the room and – with a million photos being taken and possibly getting videoed – having that flawless complexion is a must! When I talk about prepping I’m referring to setting a plan 3 months before your wedding date to schedule in possible facials or organise some homemade remedies. This way your skin is getting preened into tip top condition and also means that all the impurities will be drawn out so you won’t be getting any reaction just before your big day! This isn’t to say that you 100% won’t get a spot or two before the wedding, as stress will still play a big part, but it gives your skin the best chance possible of staying clear. As I said earlier on don’t under estimate this part of wedding prep – it may seem like nothing but will make a huge difference to your skin and to how you feel. This routine can be used and adapted for any big event you have – not just a wedding! Cut it down to 6 weeks if you’re starting later or to save money but definitely do something.

Wedding make up is about still being you but being a better version of you!

The

Princess Palette

A bride on her wedding day is like Cinderella marrying her prince. It’s a fairy tale kind of day that will live in the memory of years to come. So make up has to be fit for a princess and enough to make sleeping beauty green with envy! Speaking of green – this takes us nicely into our first colour......

Green the colour of royalty!

When you say make up, green is not the obvious colour that springs to mind – however this is a colour that is cropping up more and more this season. Pop’s of green are showing up on eyes and nails – and with Emerald being the colour of the season expect to see lots of green shadow in magazines. It may not be every bride’s cup of tea and would be more suited for the ‘ethereal’ look – it is definitely a shade that can be rocked for a hen party!

Pink is the new pink!

Soft pink lips and pale pink blush – 2013 is all about natural blush. This is the most common look for weddings – as can be updated for the evening with a darker lip or liner added to eyes.

Retro Red!

Deviant is all about deviating from the norm and if anything is out of the norm for a wedding it’s a retro rock and roll bridal look. I’m talking winged eyes with red statement lips and this is very ‘hot’ right now. Dramatic gel lined eyes and deep red lips is a one to be used with nude blush – and if rocking both keep one more subdued than the other as retro doesn’t mean clown!

Make-up to Make You Go

Ooh!

If you have read previous articles you will know that I’m a fan of MAC make up – it’s one of the best on the market and is used by makeup artists worldwide and on the high fashion cat walk shows. So it’s no surprise that it is my go to make up for bridal make up either – here are some of the products that I’d recommend if you fancy a DIY make up look.

DIY bridal has never been as popular as it has this year – could be due to money saving brides or the fact that we have more access to great products and tools than ever before. I would seriously recommend though seeking a tutorial at a beauty counter – Mac – Benefit – Estee Lauder, Dior – all of these offer them at around £30 and you can redeem the cost on some products as well! It’s not the easiest thing to be doing on the morning of one of the biggest days of your life – but if done right you will have saved a lot of money and still have the products to keep using!

DEVIANTFASHION&BEAUTY

Smash box oil-free primer and MAC strobe cream are both great primers and the MAC acts as highlighter whereas the smash box has the staying power to not let your make up budge. Foundation wise you can’t beat Estee Lauder double wear for a good coverage and MAC studio sculpt – even try mixing the two together and you get the best of both. I do this particularly if I’m trying to get a different shade. Touché Éclat by Yves Saint Laurent is a staple piece that I’ve been using since I could use make up – its not cheap but for coverage over the eyes and around the eyes it’s the best hands down! Highlighter most people go to Benefit’s high beam which is a good product but id use this mixed into your foundation and not over, as with it being liquid it can go over quite heavy and appear streaky. Instead go for a powder based high lighter like MACS’s mineralize skin finish in Lightscapade it’s soft and can be used over cheeks, brows, eyes anywhere! Blush – as mentioned previously keeping it light is really important. I’ve been using MAC Powder blush in Plum foolery – it’s a faint plum colour and can be swept sparely for nice subtle colour or built up for a more prominent cheek. Also MAC’s powder blush in Peachy Keen is another great colour for a nice natural flush. These retail at £18.00. I’ve also used Estee lauder Pure colour blush in peach passion – it has a shimmer to it so you wouldn’t need any highlighter on cheeks with this one. Urban Decay setting spray is a must to set your make up. They have different ones for skin types and spray a few times before you put make up – then a few times afterwards and it keeps your make up smudge free and on place – so banish that hairspray from your face (which I know most of you do!) and invest in this!

The Talk of the

Behind the Scenes at Miss Newcastle 2013 By Maggie Ibbeston

A beauty pageant is usually associated with bitching, fake tan and hoards of make-up but what I was faced with was quite the opposite. The reality was, in fact, naturally beautiful girls, with welcoming and infectious personalities all fighting for the chance to represent their hometown. But the biggest shock of all was how well the 20 girls got along with each other, making friendships instead of enemies. As a day of work experience, I helped set up the event and then assisted choreograph the Miss Newcastle contestants as well as organise the fashion show for an online boutique, ‘Pink’. The models themselves were fabulous, full of energy and extremely friendly, making me almost fit in- although my curvy bod did not! The theme of the show, ‘the fun of the fair’ was unique and consistent throughout- from the tables to the photo booth. The theme totally enhanced the

event; the girls were enjoying themselves which added to the overall enjoyment of the audience. Unusual to any event in this category that I have witnessed before, the girls danced, smiled and were full of enthusiasm instead of standing trying to look pretty- this made them look more attractive! The competition was fierce. All so similar yet so different, I myself would not have been able to choose a winner. The girls had to look up to last year’s winner, a breath taking beauty, Rachelle Graham, who totally stunned me when she first walked into rehearsals. She was to be soon taking part in Miss England and then if she won to progress to Miss World. But personally with a face, body and personality like hers I have no doubt at all that wherever she ends up she will be very successful. The two runners up for Miss Newcastle 2013 were Tamlyn Smith and Megan Brennan with Shannon Steinson winning

first place and she definitely deserved it. Although the choice for the judges must have been incredibly hard, Shannon has a quality that stands out from the crowd and looked so thrilled and shocked to win- she definitely does not know how beautiful she really is. Working behind the scenes at an event like this, you would expect the day to have been manic but I thoroughly enjoyed myself and hope that I could be more involved with the event and Tyne Tees Models itself in the future. This meant that when I saw the theme that has just been released for next year, I was very excited and hopefully I’ll be given the opportunity to help out again. So girls and boys, keep a look out for Miss Newcastle 2014 ‘The year of the Great Gatsby’ with lashings of class and an unusual edge I’m sure that the event will be bigger and better than this year… Watch this space!
