ENTICING TOURISM Durban has always been a great tourist destination with its beautiful year-round climate, endless stretches of pristine beaches and vibrant atmosphere. It’s no wonder that the New York Times listed Durban in the Top 10 places to visit in 2015. Despite already being a tourism hotspot, numbers still appear to be climbing, as 2015 saw an increase of 12.8% from 2013. 7.4 million visitors accrued a direct spend of R19.2 billion and created 95 396 jobs, which were sustained over the year. (Source: “Tourism Statistics Reflects Significant Growth for Durban”, February 2015)

This tourism trade is not only limited to the extended holiday periods, as even long weekends show high tourism numbers. Over the 2016 Easter Weekend in Durban, it was reported by the SABC that nearly 500 000 people were spending time in the Province. The article goes on to quote eThekwini’s City Manager, Sbu Sithole, as saying the “City’s tourism has generated over R500 million since the long weekend began”. Durban has significant international pull as a tourism destination, as shown by passenger volumes into King Shaka International Airport continuing to grow. A 6.1% increase in international passenger traffic was recorded for the year 2014/2015 when compared to 2013/2014. (Source: “South African Tourism Update”, March 2016)

A detailed analysis was done by Grant Thornton on behalf of the eThekwini Municipality. It reported that nearly half of its respondents were of the opinion that Durban is a favourable tourism destination, and more than one third (37.3%) feel that it is much better than other destinations. A collective 85.9% of respondents rate the overall service in Durban positively. The best things about Durban were said to be the beach, nature, weather, attractions such as uShaka Marine World, the people and the culture. KZN’s North Coast is teeming with beautiful wildlife and stunning wetlands. Only 2.5hrs outside Durban, the Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Game Reserve is Africa’s oldest national park and home to the largest population of white rhino in the world. Phinda Private Game Reserve shelters an abundance of wildlife, including the Big Five and many more rare species such as the cheetah and black rhino.
