Arts Education Reform By Devon Brown
STATISTICS: Low-income students who are highly engaged in the arts are
more than twice as likely to earn a bachelors degree Students who participate in the arts, both in school and after
school demonstrate improved academic performance and lower dropout rates Currently in the United States only 3% of elementary
schools offer dance and 4% offer theatre classes Federal funding for the arts is $250 million while funding
for sports programs is around $5 billion annually
Audience: Older (32-50) Educated Parents of school aged children Non-artists
Americans for the Arts ď‚— Non-profit that serves to advance, and lead the
network and organizations and individuals who cultivate, promote, sustain, and support the arts in America. ď‚— Mission is to ensure that every American has access
to the arts
Solutions: A day without art program
During the month of November each day participates will be asked to give up a specific form of art (music, books, television, etc)
The idea is to show people what it is like to live in a world without art, what life would be like if arts programs are continued to be pulled from schools
American for the arts will sponsor the program and offer discounted memberships to participates (Promo code:ARTDAY)
Solutions: A day with art
Participating schools will spend an entire day in arts related classes
Schools will offer a variety of art classes (painting, dance, acting, singing, creative writing, etc)
Available for students and parents
Americans for the arts will be on campuses, again offering discounted memberships and advocate sign ups
Summery: Arts programs are constantly being cut from schools all
across the country (art programs receive $250 million compared to sports programs $5 billion annually) Our goal is to increase awareness on the issue of arts
education and gain more advocates and members for Americans for the Arts Our audience is older (32-50) parents who are not
artists Success= increased number of members/advocates
